the CONCEPT of henry cheng observing gansey from afar for a LITERAL YEAR trying to best decide how to become lifelong friends with him and then deciding that the BEST and ONLY MOVE was to bring gansey into a convenient & historical PIT on school grounds, give him exposure therapy via robotic bee, and THEN exchange life-ruining secrets while standing in the dark close enough 2 kiss remains the funniest and gayest sequence of events in literary history and only improves in quality every time i read it

god I love Gansey. Weirdgirl cosplaying as a normie. Put all his stats into hierarchical / authority social interactions and fumbles even the most basic of peer to peer interactions. Obsessed with and in love with the weird little town he lives in. The most out of touch person you’ve ever met in your life. Would fall on his sword before asking anyone to venmo him for pizza. Haunted by death. Is the glue holding the most eclectic group of friends you’ve ever seen together. Keeps only one type of houseplant. Knows the importance of having a white whale to follow. Occasionally slips into truly archaic language but only when there’s no better word for it. Cannot learn Latin to save his life. All of his friends are cooler than him.

Sometimes I just remember Gansey didn’t die and him and Blue get to be boyfriend and girlfriend and get to go on silly little adventures together and live and like yeah :((((

most female main characters in ya fantasy usually don't have their parents around/are orphans/ran away from home (e.g. the mortal instruments, lockwood & co, a deadly education, ...), which is why there are often no adult figures around to manage the (magical) chaos the teenage characters have to untangle standalone.

but the raven cycle is different — the adults work together with the teen characters, actually listen to them, and try to help them with their quest. blue doesn't have only her friends around to help her out, she also has a giant home with different, female rolemodels. calla, persephone, maura, and all the other aunts and friends — they give blue something most ya characters don't have.

and as the series continues, she also meets the grey man, who becomes a familiar figure for her, too.

instead of having not enough help and support from adults, which is a thing most ya protagonists struggle with, blue has so many people constantly trying to protect, guide, and help her, and i think that's awesome.

she has a family, and they're actually a part of the story.

You know what I like about Blue and Gansey’s relationship?

Is that it isnt made out to be this huge thing. It doesn’t take up the space of the entire book/plot.

Their relationship is made up of small, fleeting moments in a larger narrative, and something about that is just so… peaceful? Beautiful? Natural, I think would be the right word.

Small moments like Blue giving Gansey the rest of her yoghurt cup,

them calling each other in the middle of the night to just talk, because they need someone to talk to, and it could be about anything, but it helps,

to Gansey reaching his hand to back seat to hold Blue’s hand, even if it is just a quick moment, a squeeze of her fingers and then gone as though it never happens,

driving to the mountains and watching the stars, holding each other even though they can’t kiss, even though they want to.

This comfort that they have in each other that’s created through these moments is just so nice to read, and refreshing as well after reading books where the romance is a strong part of the narrative.

just realised that noah czerny had, in fact, "come back wrong" he had been different from his alive self in almost every aspect of his outer personality but we just never knew, we never processed it as wrong because the unseeming, quiet kid is who we thought he always was
