ok s4 finale thoughts because. i actually didn’t hate it. in general i don’t think this season was as bad as people are making it out to be. there were some issues but overall i enjoyed it.

carol’s storyline was the most egregious to me, and probably my least favorite part of the season, but there were a lot of other choices that i didn’t mind

imo this season was peak for baksbee. the poker scene where they’re close together is probably my favorite brad/david moment in the whole show, and villain’s feast was also great. i know a lot of people were hoping for more, but the tension and drama is part of what makes them interesting to me, and the fact that they clashed a bit this season was exciting to me

im surprised by how divisive the grimpop kiss has been, because i don’t really have any strong opinions about it. i know people either love or hate them as a pair and i do think i like them slightly better platonically, but i also understand the appeal of this ship. their dynamic was one of the best written parts of this season it was great to see ian finally have some character development. i’m surprised everyone’s talking about the kiss and not the airport scene, which felt way more compelling of a poppy/ian moment to me. personally i think i like them best when the lines between platonic and romantic are kind of blurry and it could be interpreted either way

i also didn’t hate the poppy pregnancy plotline. i could’ve done without it but it wasn’t a deal breaker for me, and im also not mad she decided to keep the baby

way back in like. march?? I took a stab at writing some kind of kabitserye type of story but it was a mess: it kept veering off into murder mystery drama territory because I was reading a lot of murder mystery novels around then and it Wasn't Good because I hadn't tried writing mysteries, let alone murder mysteries, before lmao

I did write a handful of short mystery stories since then, so next year I might take a stab at this idea again now that I'm no longer jumping head first into a genre pool I don't know how to swim in :)

i think 2025 is the year i finally write a longform same age obikin fic where they're both jedi knights (ish) cause that's one trope i am still missing from my ao3 catalogue lol there are two au options and i'm going back and forth on which one i'd want to write.

option a is the baby's last mission au (tag here), where anakin tells his pal and confidante obi-wan that he's going to leave the order to be with his wife and obi-wan convinces him to do one more mission with him where they go undercover pretending to be married (because obi-wan has been in love with him for forever and he just wants one imaginary, fake memory to hold onto if anakin is going to leave him forever) (but then things get complicated, especially when anakin gets the feeling that obi-wan may be telling more of the truth than their cover story demands) (also maybe obi-wan finds out anakin married his wife using a cover name, so he real marries them with their real names out of spite and also jealousy that he probably deeply regrets later)

and option b is healer anakin au (tag here), where the jedi healers all wear blindfolds around their eyes to represent their mandate to heal whoever needs it regardless of allegiance or appearance or clan, and anakin and obi-wan grew up in the creche together before anakin was picked to be a healer. they don't get along at all now but they do start hate-fucking during the war after they keep getting deployed together, and their emotions get to be pretty tangled up and complicated (mostly because obi-wan can't forgive anakin for becoming a healer when all he wants is to see his eyes again) (anakin breaks his healer's vow of nonviolence and kills maul when he grievously wounds obi-wan. very bloody and over the top too. none of my anakins would ever be able to actually keep a vow of nonviolence. lmao)

literally the easiest way to make someone care about a character and make them feel well-rounded beyond basic traits like personality, sexuality, ethnicity, etc, is to give them an actual character arc, and it’s shocking how many people do not seem to fully realize this

you cannot just cram a bunch of tropes. tropes are not the main event, they are tools to tell the story you wish to tell. emotional impact comes from the lead up, so you can’t just jump ahead and expect the payoff to work. “I want this character to just ___ already!” but they’re not there yet. that’s where the arc comes in - how do they get there?

and! most importantly, and this is something I really want people to think about when writing - the most important relationship your character should have, always, is with the world and society around them. defining your character purely through their interactions with other characters are, I find, how a lot of female characters end up feeling flat or not engaging with the themes as much as the male characters, and also how queer and non-white characters wind up as devices for other characters’ development instead of being more fleshed out

MAN I'm seriously so sad about season 2. Bc I wish act 2 had the same emotional impact on me as it appears to have on so many others. But rn I'm just somewhere between unable to care and actively annoyed by some of those writing decisions. Seriously the more I think about it the less I like it.

The problem is they both make sense.

John lacks any agency, and as his abilities start "failing" he loses more of what little he has. The only things he can do is perceive the world through Arthur's eyes and talk to him in his head. That's it. He has no material effect on the world around them. He is solely 100% reliant on Arthur for his continued existence and influence on the world. He can't ignore Arthur whatsoever (unlike Arthur who can ignore John easy peasy) he can't Do anything but talk and observe (and also experience the deaths of people Arthur touches but ultimately that does nothing). Of course he is going to be distrustful of other people and possessive over Arthur.

Arthur feels like suddenly he can't rely on this very reliable thing that has been keeping him alive this whole time. It would shake anyone up. Especially with the shit they have to deal with? If he can't rely on directions he will be sliced to ribbons or shot without a chance of fighting back. They may as well be dead already. And for all of John's lack of agency, it's Arthur who has to actually deal with the consequences. He's the one who's getting wounded and torn to bits and has to fight all that. Plus it's HIS body. If someone's existence relies on your body, you have the right to refuse, bodily autonomy is a human right.

The problem is they've gone through this cycle before (cycle of learning and forgetting and learning that they are One Unit and need to work Together vs The Problems and forgetting) but never has it shaken Arthur so much. Even when they've argued before he would still listen to John's directions. But now? Everything is in question (as is probably the intent behind John's "failing" abilities.) They DO need other people to help and they DO need to be careful and include John. They cannot truly trust someone else while keeping John a secret or without his input. Arthur has the most control over the situation and the onus is on him to make the compromises. Yeah it's his body but 1) countless times he promised to John that they were in this together and 2) at this point separating them would be so traumatic that they may as well be One.

All of this is to say, curious that Arthur is so willing to tell Oscar about literally everything EXCEPT John. What happens if he does? What if there's someone else to assert for John in a way Arthur can't ignore so easily? Would that legitimize the shared ownership of Arthur's body? What does it mean for John to gain agency by the loss of Arthur's autonomy?

A somewhat heavy question, but if Clover was the only one to come back how do they feel about that? More importantly how do they feel about Asgore? I'd imagine that they of all people want Asgore to answer for the others (especially given the likelihood that they... didn't give their SOULS willingly ( on that note how is Asgore not in prison))

survivors guilt baby!!!! of course they’re happy to be back (they didn’t really want to die in the first place, no matter how many times they said they wanted to) but they cant help but feel bad for the previous fallen kids. the whole reason they went down there was to save them, and clover was the only one that could come back. its not like it’s they’re fault, they didnt KNOW or ASK to come back, but they just cant help feeling guilty.

they’ll always feel a little bitter that asgore didnt get any repercussions for what he did. they could never interact with asgore without remembering. i think if they had a long, solid conversation, clover could understand asgore a bit more, but they would definitely think asgore a coward for everything.
