Kabaneri theories by two biology nerds

Ok, I am rewatching Koutetsujou no Kabaneri and my friend is watching it for the first time with me, and we are both biology nerds, so we are trying to work out how exactly the kabane, and therefor kabaneri, work. I will be posting our thoughts and theories one episode at a time, so please keep reading these. And if you haven't watched this anime, it's great, so watch it as the fandom is too small.

Right, so in episode one we basically were just trying to work out if it is a virus/bacteria, or a parasite. We don't think it would be a virus or bacteria, as those tend to kill the hosts pretty quickly, and some of the kabane have been alive for decades. They also often make the host physically weaker, and that is clearly not the case.

So we are onto parasites. Firstly, we needed to determine if it was a parasite or parasitoid (parasitoids kill the host and parasites don't). Despite what you may think, we actually think that it would be some type of parasite, as although kabane are basically zombies, parasitoids don't stay in their hosts, and don't control them. As far as parasites go, there are many instances of parasites, animal and fungal, latching onto the hosts brain and controlling them, like the cordyceps fungus, or the tarantula hawk wasp.

So, we've determined that it's a parasite, now what? Well, how is it transmitted. Obviously, through bites, but how does it do that. We decided that depending on if it is animal or fungus based, it probably lays eggs/spores in the saliva glands in the hosts mouth, which then get into the victims bloodstream when bitten. This also means that the parasite is unlikely to be in the kabane's blood, which makes sense, as steamsmiths don't seem too worried about cleaning blood off the trains.

When a victim is bitten, the eggs/spores are released into the bloodstream, causing the infection. This then explains the slow infections, as the smaller the wound, the fewer eggs and the slower the infection. The parasite then targets the brain in order to control the new host, as well as protecting the heart. This makes sense, as the parasite would more than likely be secreting chemicals into the hosts bloodstream in order to keep it running, and give it the superhuman strength, and in order to do that, it needs the heat to work.

This also explains why they are so hard to kill (we haven't tried to work out the heart cage yet). If the parasite keeps the body running off of its own chemicals, the host doesn't need to eat, so its organs can shut down, meaning that shouting it anywhere other that the head or heart will have no effect, as the kabane doesn't need anything else to function.

The parasite theory also helps explain why Ikoma succeed in turning himself into a kabaneri. If it was a virus, as soon as he stopped cutting off the blood supply to his head, it would have continued to infect him. But with a parasite travelling through his blood, if it can't find his brain, then it might assume that it is in the wrong place, and either shut down and hibernate, or die.

Ikoma still would have gone through some physical changes, as the parasite likely releases chemicals as soon as it hatches in the bloodstream, which would permanently alter his body, sending him through the initial changes that a kabane goes through. But without the right place to live, the parasite shuts down and stops releasing chemicals, meaning that not only does he keep his mind, changes such as skin colour would likely be reversed, as he no longer has the foreign chemicals in him.

That's all we have for now, but I will keep posting our theories as we watch it, so keep an eye out if you're interested.

𝐈𝐊𝐎𝐌𝐀, ever so loving ikoma who is past oblivious but also observant—cannot help his adoration towards you. the mere presence of you alleviate all his worries at the same time heightens them to a degree where he just feels the need to dote on you and your safety.

he fusses over you more than you think but discreetly-not-discreet, like when you were walking off the train, ikoma cannot help but look after you by asking about you on his every way to those he encounter that has seen you while he completes his errand.

“did you have fun on the market?” he asks you while embracing your waist, pulling you towards his—though his hug is firm, it is also loose enough for you to wiggle out whenever you feel uncomfortable. ikoma listens to you tell your tale on how you made your merry way through the town. “mmh, i did hear that kurusu saw you by a store looking at their products.” he'd casually brought up on your conversations while smiling at you, because you knew that it was his own way of looking after you.

ikoma who gets flustered when you initiate romantic things with him. he can't help it! despite being so cool whenever he does it, he can't seem to keep that same cool when you reciprocate said gestures.

“a-ah.. no—i'm not blushing..” he pauses “okay maybe i am but because you did that!” poor man cannot get enough of it though, secretly wants you to do romantic gestures over and over again.

makes you trinkets and inventions that may help you in your daily needs but there are times when he just creates what he deem can make you smile.

“here,” ikoma closes your hands that's clasped beneath him, a soft smile on his face as he leans forward to brush his lips on your forehead, “a gift.” his cupped hands opening your at the same time only for a melody to hum all around you, you welcome the lull the same time when ikoma presses his forehead against yours, for now, this shall be something shared between the two of you. a sentimental moment that shall not be forgotten.

i can feel it in my bones that he's someone who drops compliments like it's an everyday word then becomes pleased whenever your expression drops into something other than a nonchalant one.

knuckles brushing your cheek all of a sudden, you bare your eyes only to see ikoma grinning boyishly, tilting his head to admire you. “beautiful.”

ikoma who also becomes intrigued on pinky promises with you and only you, fluff + angst but it's his way to cope that you'll be alright, sure he can fight for you but a promise as such can calm his erratic heart whenever the kabane finds their way

he twists your pinkies together, a call for you that safety is priority. a silent vow to keep yourself safe and that whenever you're in danger, he'll come and find you no matter where. ikoma then untwist them, throwing you a soft smile before running with to the frontier to take down the kabane that dare to intrude.

you still vividly remember when you showed him what intertwining pinkies mean, “a promise. ” he whispers, replaying what you've said, “then, can you promise me this?” he murmurs as he gazes at you “my heart is yours as long as it beats, that's why, whenever you are in trouble I'll find you and save you no matter what and no matter where.” ikoma spreads your hands, his palm on yours like he's comparing your hand sizes, “i won't lose you. i cannot afford to. so please, just this once, promise me this.”

Anyway! Explanations go:

1 - Bloodborne - Lady Maria of the Astral Clocktower - largely self-explanatory. I would have exchanged her for Genshin's Raiden Shogun for the more accurate "draws swords from own body" visual, BUT the fun part is I actually didn't know she did that. So the Baal sword and Mael's solid shadow weapons are a complete coincidence 💀

Furthermore, Lady Maria's general aesthetic influenced my own design a good deal. Sadly, necromancers can't wear medium armor.

2 - Hollow Knight - God of Gods/Shade Lord - just the vibes for his Shroud... or is it something more? :P I guess we shall see once I iron out some plot points. Some people might know because I rant in DMs. Devouring darkness my beloved. Inspiration for a potential "corrupted form" for a fractal where the story went really wrong.

3 - Norse Mythology - Fenrir - core inspiration. Chain/binding motif, being something dangerous, even to gods. Power that needs suppressing. Everlasting hunger, being the doomed being with the potential to doom others in return. A... specific relationship with the sun. A certain someone losing a hand within the mouth of the beast.

His swords are named Dromi and Lædingr after the first two chains that bound Fenrir. He's currently looking for a way to devise a "perfect spell" to allow complete control over his volatile magic and stop the demon essence from further warping his body and affecting his mind - that spell, or perhaps item, being Gleipnir.

4 - Tower of God - Khun Aguero Agnes - personality and mannerisms inspiration, particularly post-The Departing. "The Commander when he locks the fuck in." Devilishly intelligent and not afraid to utilize underhanded methods, but ultimately a good person. A true silver tongue. Moderately to severely grumpy at times. Dramatic flair. Gay boy rizz.

5 - Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress - Ikoma - the survivor. Undead but won't take the L and keeps on going no matter what. Self-engineered restraints to keep his affliction under control, dog motif, being willing to do terrible things to his own body simply to stop himself becoming a monster. A heart replaced by a core.

6 - Legend of Vox Machina - Percy de Rolo - I have actually not watched this show yet (I really damn need to) the visuals, the gunplay, the demonic possession and those deep black eyes with yellow irises? Checks out. I made Mael in 2014, so, again, coincidence, but it's a really good-looking coincidence :-)
