The flashbacks look like our world, people talk like they talk in real life, there are no weird foodless dinner parties, everything feels familiar and normal. And now we know everything we've seen and heard up to now, the cold, liminal, claustrophobic vibe of the show, all the weird stilted ways people talk to each other and the emptiness of not just the severed floor but also the town, the way everything feels like some alternate version of reality, it's all colored by grief. The whole show, everything we've seen so far. It's about a world suffocating in grief and that's why it is the way that it is.
