I often don't make things for poc because I'm scared of whitewashing them. Can you link to the tutorials that show how to go about this or could you explain it yourself? I'm always too scared of making things with poc in them and I don't want to whitewash anyone so advice would be amazing!

hi! i guess i could share the things i know about it but i do want to clarify that i’m not an expert at editing! so, if you want really indepth help, it would probably be best to ask someone else!

as for tutorials, these are the ones that have personally helped me! this one by @fadenet (specifically pale/pastel gifs including characters with dark skin), this one by @blueshelp (specifically about east asian and southeast asian celebs), and this one by @kispesan (specifically about edits). this is a post with a ton of resources for gif making, including things about coloring and other anti-whitewashing tutorials (highly recommend!).

when it comes to what i do, it really depends on what i’m making! i’ve made a couple of edits specifically about unwhitewashing characters of color which you can find here for examples, but overall what i do really depends on the kind of edit i’m working with.

i’d also like to quickly say that i use photoshop! while the basic coloring will cross into other programs, some of the tools/names might be different.

lets use an edit of the character aisha from winx club as an example! in season 8 of winx club, the characters aisha and flora (both having dark skin) were whitewashed. the following pictures are a screenshot from the series, showing the whitewashing, and the same sc but edited to reflect her original skin tone and hair color.

in this edit, i actually went in and recolored her skin using the brush tool (yes, it takes a hot minute to do, but you get faster the more you do it). the reason i do this for picture edits, is purely a personal preference. i like having the control of only editing the parts i want to edit and keeping the rest of the picture the same as before. personally, i don’t love using the selection tools so when i don’t need to,, well, i don’t.

if you have the time, patience, and ability to physically recolor still pictures, i’d definitely recommend it! it allows you to use the eyedropper tool on the original skin tone which makes for a much more accurate edit. taking advantage of the selection tools and paint bucket tool can make the process a lot quicker too!

now, lets use a different method, one that i personally use for things like videos and gifs (basically, anything moving)!

these gifs come from the same season as the above example and as you can see, aisha is heavily whitewashed in the first one. now, this is where coloring becomes your best friend!

so, you have your gif ready for coloring, maybe you used a psd/filter or you did your own thing, regardless, the person in the gif is whitewashed and you want to fix it. so, what do you do? (now, obviously this is just one example. there are many others ways to do this!). what i do, is almost exclusively use the hue/saturation and the color selection layers (i will occasionally use the brightness and curves layers depending on the scene)!

^^this little “guide” or whatever shows what you need to find for this tutorial.

the first thing you should do, is figure out which colors primarily make up the person’s skin tone. a good way to figure this out is by using a hue/saturation layer. click the hue/saturation, which will show a menu similar to the one in the picture, and go through each color and turn the saturation all the way down, so it says -100. don’t mess with the hue or lightness levels yet, just the saturation. this will show which colors make up the person’s skin tone! as an extreme example, if someone’s skin was green and you turned the saturation of greens all the way down, that person’s skin wouldn’t look green anymore, it’d look like someone put on a black and white filter specifically for the color green. just keep a close eye on what changes! now, this saturation change is just temporary! after you know which colors are in that person’s skin tone, you can just delete the hue/saturation layer. (you really only need to do this if you aren't used to coloring darker skin. once you get used to it, you likely won't need to, but it can still be a good reference point if you're lost on what to do)

so, after figuring out what colors you need to focus on, go to the selective colors layers, so you can edit just those colors! for our example here, aisha’s skin tone is mostly made up of reds and yellows while her hair is mostly reds and magentas. when i’m editing her skin tone and hair color, i only focus on those colors. in the selective color layer menu, you have four other colors to control; cyan, magenta, yellow, and black. although it would help, you don’t need to know everything about colors or color theory for this! just mess around with the colors sliders until you get something close to their original skin tone. you may need multiple layers of selective colors to get this right! don’t panic if it doesn’t happen right away, just keep going.

something i think is incredibly important during this step, is having a picture of that person/character open! that way you can actually go back and forth to see if what you’re doing is close. another tip, having another file open with a completely white background with a colored circle of that person’s base skin tone on it really helps. this way you can use the eyedropper and brush tools to see how close what you have in the edit is to the original (basically, use the eyedropper tool to select the skin tone in the edit and then use the brush tool to color it next to the circle of the original skin tone. this helps you see up close how similar they are!). here's an example!

the first example is from the gif and the second is from the still picture edit! you'll notice that the gif example doesn't match up exactly because in that specific scene aisha was directly in sunlight, making her skin slightly brighter than usual, while the photo i used for reference has normal lighting. remember to pay attention to things like lighting and shadows!

now, at this point you might be thinking, “this tutorial only shows what to do for animated characters and i make edits with real people :(”. don’t worry! the second method still works! here’s an example using a real person, kim taehyung from the group bts.

obviously, this isn’t perfect because i spent like. two minutes on it. so the skin is blotchy, the lips are too red, and the background changed. but the way i edited it is mostly the same as the gif example i used! the only difference being that i also used a color balance level to darken up the whole picture. however, besides that i did the exact same things as i did with the gifs of aisha above. if you're making edits with real people, then just do whatever you usually do to make sure it looks more realistic.

i hope all of this made sense? i’ve never done a tutorial before and basically all of what i’ve said has already been said! but here are some more tips for the road:

-when editing black people/characters, don’t make their skin red

-when editing indigenous people/characters, don’t make their skin red

-when editing east asian and southeast asian people/characters, don’t make their skin yellow

-pay attention to lighting! if a scene has darker lighting, skin will look darker than it is!

-on the flip side, if a character is right in front of a very bright light, their skin will look lighter

-don’t avoid the colors red and yellow, especially for people with tan/darker skin. those colors are always essential. they won’t look bad in your pastel edit.

-don’t be afraid to ask for help! if you have mutuals who make edits you can try asking them. or even making a separate post asking for help from any followers that edit! basically, if you truly don’t know what to do, either look it up or ask for help.

-do not just post the whitewashed edit/gif/art with the excuse that it’s, “just the filter” or “just the psd”. take responsibility for what you’ve created.

-if you’re using a filter/psd and you really can’t figure out how to unwhitewash someone.. use a different filter! ik you might really like the one you picked, but that doesn’t excuse racism. there are lots of filters/psds out there that don’t whitewash. use one.

i’m gonna be honest, unwhitewashing is really easy as long as you know how to work whatever program you’re using. and even if you just started, it’s still pretty simple! if you’re scared of making edits with poc because of whitewashing, learn how to not whitewash.

anyway i hope this helps? let me know if something doesn't make sense or needs more explaining! but i'd really recommend looking at the tutorials i linked as they're more in-depth and offer a lot of insight!

TPN S02E06 - Initial Thoughts (anime-only)

hhh everything went wrong with my reaction video this time - the video is lagging (so i replaced the screenrecording with the actual episode), also facecam broken so my friends won’t get to see me tearing up and the wrong mic input was recorded so I’m sorry for the shitty quality. I’m so upset :(

I don’t even know what to really talk about because I liked everything?? it was such a good episode and I just... AHHH. I wish we had so much more of THIS. please give them more seasons.... ik its already too late for that but pleaseee fidusdj- they just... do so well when they adapt imo. the whole comparison panels I’ve seen of the interactions with Norman, I just... genuinely think it’s such a highpoint and they did so friggin well.

I just... I’m so sad this will likely be the last season. I hope we’ll get more, in whatever form. I know there’s the manga and unless we get an announcement about more anime content at light speed, I do plan on reading it! I just... I love the anime. And it’s art. The manga’s art is unique but the style isn’t my jam and some stuff just looks a bit too stylized for my liking hhhh-

That won’t stop me but... it does make me emotional, I guess.

Let’s hope they stay on this path now that they’ve joined back in with the manga, somewhat (still, you couldnt even give them 12 episodes??).

. the reunion

It gave me flutters!! it’s so nice and intimate and sweet and dusdhj- THE NORMAN SQUISH. And him noticing Emma’s ear is gone TvT Her sweet, kinda embarrassed “I left it back at home” efiojsd

also the clothing line here separates the two groups, alluding to the conflict between them later in the episode. They’re strangers on two sides, and Norman is the only connecting piece.

I didn’t really dislike anything aside from Ray being left out. I just wanted them both to run for him I guess :( though it makes sense to be more distant, he also was at the shipment itself but idk, it just makes Norman seem so,,, rude that he doesn’t acknowledge Ray at all until Emma is like “hey btw I brought him too” :”D

Slap kinda deserved, on multiple fronts haha-

Though the mutual “baka” calling between Norman and Ray was adorable duihdasjdas

. Emma’s arc

a few days ago, I made that whole “anime emma’s arc” post about her feeling useless and how that might come into play - and I do hope they address it and I think they kind of are? Because GF arc Emma was always ready to have her way, even if it seemed impossible.

Either way, I feel like part of why she didn’t speak up is kind of as alluded to, that she doesn’t feel like she has the right to when she doesn’t know any other way right now. And I hope that in the next few episode we will see her headstrong and do things and be pro-active and kind of challenge that and Norman.

. Norman (+ his crew)

It was kind of on the nose when Norman held that whole speech about what she had said before, a small hint to it would have been enough I feel like, for the audience -- because I think realizing that part of his motivation in all of this was just her words and that he wanted to do that for her (I think that’s the implication) is really sweet. He is kind of the carrier here and I hope that will change because it feels like we haven’t earned this bio weapon at all - which is okay, because it probably won’t be the solution, so it’s more of a plot-moving element than an actual solution. And I hope that whatever the solution really does entail will feel less like an ass-pull and more deserved.

I feel it may have been interesting to have a pov switch somewhere in ep4 or ep5 to Norman and what he’s been up to. The reveal was kind of “...? okay?” anyway so I feel like that would have made things a little interesting, but I also really enjoy getting to know his squad now.

I’m also HIGHKEY SUS (all alarm bells are ringing) at Norman being like “Oh I just did tests” like.... BABY. PRECIOUS SON, ARE YOU PRETENDING EVERYTHING’S FINE AGAIN?

The fact that Norman didn’t bother explaining further just solidifies (to me, anyway) that he’s avoiding talking about it somewhat. He spoke about it very distantly and from an objective viewpoint.

Alone getting that tattoo on his chest must have hurt a lot. So. Please, give me a lot of angst, CW.

I hope both him and his crew will get some flashbacks or trauma moments to really solidify how badly they’ve been treated (and deliver some juicy angst).

I really loved the close-up on the meat Barbara was eating in that scene too. I felt like it didn't even have to spell it out for us that they're eating demon meat but. Oh well - it was well conveyed but I guess the characters had to confirm.

I also love that whole part about how he’s always cold to them auidhjhs - I really do feel like making a gif out of that haha.

Lambda person: “Boss?” Norman: “What? :/” Emma/Ray: “Norman!” Norman: “Yes? :)”

Also only vaguely related but what’s with people who are made to be eaten, in a state of “dead??? who knows” and then coming back as a “boss” :D Yes I’m talking about beastars.

. Mujika

Norman called her the “evil-blooded girl” and the old guy called the temple “evil-blooded” too. And he said it wasn’t a place for kids to be --- and he likely assumed that they were demon kids.

Also some nice clue before we even know to connect Mujika with the temple.

A demon temple that’s “evil-blooded” and too dangerous for demon kids?

It could just be because it’s a ruin, but he IS praying for the world to change there. Mujika seems to be able to maintain her form without eating humans, so maybe that’s what this is all aiming towards.

I guess it also means that the statue with the violet veil is Mujika??? She does have purple hair I suppose.

At first, I was surprised that Norman recognized her just by the description - there’s more than one demon girl :D but I guess only one demon girl who doesn’t need to eat humans? - and I thought he may have crossed paths with her.

But for that to be the case AND for him to assume she’s alive because Emma and Ray have met her, it can’t mean he actually MET her. Because well, RayEm met her like 2 months after his shipment. Assuming he didn’t break out immediately, he couldn’t have met AND tried to do something to her (likely kill). So my guess is that she’s some sort of legend or diety or just like, commonly known and she’s supposedly dead and he’s shocked because she isn’t.

He also first asked “where did you hear about that?” assuming he also only heard about it. Norman's reaction to them having met them also isn't "when?" (so he could confirm if it was after or before his supposed encounter with her), it's shock that they met her AT ALL. Which to me, implies that she's supposedly dead (which lines up with the temple in ruin, so something happened to her line, or whatever she's a part of). And since Norman couldn't have met her before their escape (Mujika hasn't seen a human when they meet the GF escapees), that's my conclusion.

Assuming she’s dead also makes sense since her (religion’s) temples seem to be in ruin. maybe that’s why no other demons seem to have that ability (that we know of), because it was lost when her presence was destroyed (therefore the ruins) or something of the sort.

She’s never seen a human before apparantly though, so I’m not sure what exactly that means. She doesn’t seem to have wanted freedom for humans prior to meeting them either (she only seemed hesitant about eating them after all that), so I’m not sure what her own motivation in having that sort of religion would even be.

There’s of course also sonju, so maybe it is after all a religion-thing? Who knows-

As I’ve talked about before, I think it makes a lot of sense if the demons are part of the solution, I’m just really curious what that solution actually entails for the demons / what exactly Mujika is. I still think it’s plausible that another promise between Mujika and Emma will happen, considering the narrative mirroring TPN does a lot.

. other random stuff

there’s mass production farms! I shouldn’t be surprised, but I hope we get to know more about those (likely not since yknow 5 episodes left and all that)

I also liked how they showed the different plants while talking about it, mirroring how we too mutated plants and some animals to further benefit our needs and exploitation...

The pep talk from Ray was good and the sunrise was SO BEAUTIFUL, TAKE ME NOW ANIMATORS

generally the animation, especially in the trio scene and the lambda squad hideout scenes, was so BEAUTIFUL

I liked that I kept joking about how the WM system was rly insecure if a random guy just dropped the pen for Krone to find, but NOW WE HAVE CONFIRMATION IT WAS INTENTIONAL and Smee is truly the MVP / big brain puppet master of this series.

It did seem kind of weird that Norman just left like "yeah this will probably be discovered soon. anyway, I'm leaving you here to go to my base, see ya" - LIKE BRO TAKE THEM WITH YOU SO YOU CAN PROTECT THEM IF THEY SHOW UP LIKE, TONIGHT

Things We Can Do to Support Fiona and #BlackLivesMatter

Hey, so I decided to make a post on things we can do to deal with racism and support #BlackLivesMatter within the fandom 💜 A lot may be obvious but it's just a simple guide to things to help. Also be noted, I am not black but I am a person of colour. (ik it's a long post, I'm on mobile so I'll stick a keep reading in when I can, sorry!)

1. Check Yourself

The thing to remember that we are not infallible. We are human, we can mistakes and say things that are hurtful without meaning to. Acknowledge this. If someone calls you out, thank them and try not to make the same mistake in the future. Depending on your upbringing, your experiences, the people around you, you may support BLM wholeheartedly but pick up microaggressions, say words that you shouldn’t, think ‘jokes’ are funny when they’re not. But as long as you learn, it means you are trying.

2. Friends Shouldn’t Be Defensive

The second place we look is at the people we surround ourselves in in fandom. If you see someone doing something racist; be it through art, fanfiction, how they refer to people, shoot them a message explaining why you think what they're doing is wrong. Most people would unaware and would be glad to know. However, if they get defensive and insist they're not racist, perhaps stop and think about how important this person is to you. And if you find yourself getting defensive, please look again and try see it from their perspective!

3. YouTube

Ah, the big one. As AH's content is based off YouTube this is where we can do the most! Fiona has already mentioned that she knows videos with her in them get less views, get more dislikes, get more hate comments. So things we can do include:

1. Watching videos

See Fiona in a vid that you weren't going to watch? Maybe put it playing in the background, or put headphones in if it's distracting. Your view counts! All of ours do!

2. Reporting hate comments

Hate Speech is illegal on YouTube. If you see any comments, report them with either hate speech or harassment/bullying (although, I'm not sure how well YouTube handles this but it's better than nothing). I won't encourage you to engage with these commenters but if you do, be aware that people who openly hate are usually quite set in their opinions.

3. Overwhelm the hate with love

We know that AH doesn't read all the comments because how could they? However, if they were to read them, they'd see the top comments first. This is why it's important to comment nice things, like other positive comments and dislike negative ones. Also like the video! Trevor has said many times that with the new algorithm, likes impact how a video is recommended and viewed.

There is also roosterteeth.com. I personally don't use the site but I assume much is the same!

4. Social Media

Both our own and theirs! Let your voice be heard! Leave supportive comments on their Twitter and Instagram. Also, some AH members have been doing personal fund raisers so check them out if you see them.

Social media also includes the content we as fans create! Be it fanart, moodboards, fanfiction, show your support to Fiona and the others 💜 I've seen people talk of a Fiona Week (like a ship week but for celebrating what a wonderful person she is) but nothing has come of that as of yet. (If no one picks it up 👀 I'll see how busy I am). In general be supportive!

5. Fanmail

This one would have been easier if they were in their office and we all know how AH are with packages. But better late than never! If you can, send letters or gifts in to let Fiona know she's loved from the community. Also, from the AHWUs, they've mentioned that Fiona is usually the one to drop by the office to collect packages for everyone so if it's addressed to her, she'll probably get it.

6. Also!

Here's a link to a petition micooll made to let Fiona know how much the community loves her. You can sign or leave a comment, I just thought it was a cute idea!

And that's what I could think of 👉👈 of course, there are probably other ways so feel free to add on.

As always, sign petitions, donate, spread posrs, educate yourself. This was for internal fandom stuff but there's other things we can do to support #BlackLivesMatter

Hiya! We've never talked before, but I love ur blog all the bnha posts you rb! :) And SINCE I saw recently that you've gotten into Banana Fish too, brace urself for these asks :D 1 Fandom : Banana Fish 2 Ship : Asheiji 3 Character : Eiji Okumura Hope you're having a lovely day! 💕

Aww, you’re so sweet! I actually watched Banana Fish a few months ago, but I recently re-watched it with my sister (and ripped my heart out again in the process), so that’s why I’ve been posting more about it lately!. Anyway, thank you for sending me the ask! :) Here are my answers:

001 | Fandom: Banana Fish

Favorite character: Honestly, as much as I love Eiji, it’s gotta be Ash. I will never stop grieving for him, and I appreciate the complexity of his character.

Least Favorite character: Yikes, there’s so many assholes in this show. I’m gonna go with Abraham for creating Banana Fish and then being a weak little bitch about it when shit hits the fan, and for hurting Shorter. Eduardo is also SCUM.

5 Favorite ships (canon or non-canon): I’m not sure if I could come up with 5 ships for this show…Asheiji for sure. Also Max + Jessica.

Character I find most attractive: Ash

Character I would marry: Blanca (hahaha, he’s well-read, attractive, mature, and cares for Ash despite the circumstances they’re both in)

Character I would be best friends with: I wanna be friends with Cain!

A random thought: Cain is such an underrated character! At least, I don’t hear much about him within the fandom. Sing is also a precious bby.

An unpopular opinion: Ash’s full name sounds kinda ugly? Like I love the meaning behind it, but Aslan Jade Callenreese is a bit much.

My Canon OTP: Asheiji

My Non-canon OTP: Don’t really have any.

Most Badass Character: It’s pretty much a tie between Ash and Blanca, but I guess I’d have to pick Blanca since he taught Ash.

Most Epic Villain: Dino. I wouldn’t call him “epic,” but his evil is an evil that’s not so in-your-face, but that still permeates the entire series (Please read @softasheijis‘s analysis of this, it’s great! Linked here: https://kirisunshine-ejirou.tumblr.com/post/183846304436/softasheijis-takes-a-long-sip-of-hot-tea-dino)

Pairing I am not a fan of: Hm. I don’t know of many pairings in the fandom, but Ash + anyone other than Eiji just isn’t right, hahaha. Also Blanca + Yut-Lung is gross b/c of the age thing.

Character I feel the writers screwed up (in one way or another): Some characters may be screwed up in the head, but other than that, no one.

Favourite Friendship: Shorter + Ash!

Character I most identify with: Ash. I have never experienced any kind of trauma to that comes anywhere near to what Ash had to endure, but I identify with the difficulty he had with believing he’s someone worthy to be loved. I’ve got low self-esteem and it can really get to me at times :/ I also don’t tend to trust people very easily.

Character I wish I could be: Hmm, well, I don’t think I’d want the tragic life that comes with being any of the characters…but if I had to choose I guess it would be Yut-Lung so I could have his wardrobe, lol.

002 | Ship: Asheiji

When I started shipping them: Honestly - the pole vaulting scene - I knew they were a ship from what I heard about the show before watching it, so my love of their connection was instantaneous. More realistically - that tender moment in Ep. 11 when Eiji promises Ash that he’ll stay by his side, even if the rest of the world turns on him. (God, I’m almost crying just writing this).

My thoughts: This is one of my all-time favorite ships because the dynamic between the characters and what could have been between them sticks out for me. They deserved better.

What makes me happy about them: Their trust. They would give their lives for each other, and even though this turns out to get them both in a lot of trouble, it comforts me to think that Ash found someone he could rely on after 17 years of hell. Also, the fact that they can both be themselves in the relationship; as Max said, Ash found someone he can finally act his age around, unguarded.

What makes me sad about them: Ash will never get to go to Japan with Eiji :’(

Things done in fanfic that annoys me: Making them suffer any more than they already have.

Things I look for in fanfic: More fluff/hugs/domestic content

My wishlist: I don’t really understand this question? I wish for them to be happy. That is all.

Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: There’s just no other non-platonic pairing for either of them that I can think of.

My happily ever after for them: Ash goes to the library after being stabbed, but calls himself an ambulance, or Max, or anyone who could get him to the hospital, recovers, then meets up with Eiji in Japan where they live a happy, simple life together (as much as possible, ik Ash still has a ton of shit he needs to sort through.)

003 | Character: Eiji

How I feel about this character: His pureness always makes me smile, but he’s also got some spunk! Lol, as in, he teases Ash and isn’t afraid of him (the pumpkin thing, being able to wake Ash up when everyone else is terrified, throwing Ash in the shower, etc.) and he also becomes more able to defend himself as the show progresses; first he goes to Chinatown to find Shorter wearing that ridiculous outfit, then he holds Yut-lung hostage (kinda) and (tries) to shoot Dino. Bless him.

Any/all the people I ship romantically with this character: Ash

My favorite non-romantic relationship for this character: I love his interactions with Bones and Kong!

My unpopular opinion about this character: Not sure if this is “unpopular,” but I’ve heard some stuff about Eiji being more “edgy” (haha, see what I did there) in the manga, so I’d like to see more of that play out in the anime, to give him a little more nuanced character.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: I wish we could’ve got more background info on him. Like we know that he’s a former pole-vaulter and that he has a little sister, but not much more than that. I think one of the side stories of the manga has this content though!

Favorite friendship for this character: Eiji & Shorter! Shorter was so protective of Eiji during their limited time together, and I would have loved to see more Ash - Eiji - Shorter friendship interactions.

My crossover ship: Hm, can’t think of any at the moment!

Sorry some of my answers aren’t the most straightforward, haha. Also, @silverquillsideas I just wanted to say, your blog theme is gorgeous, and even though I follow you, I don’t think I’ve seen any of your Banana Fish art/fics until now (I just reblogged an asheiji work of yours!), but I’ll be sure to look out for more :) Hope your day has been great; see you around!

I feel like shit today

I'm lethargic, slow, crying, and insecure. So yep ~depression~ has come to rear its ugly head once again.

But since I'm not into the whole anti-recovery thing, I'll give you some useful tips on how to maybe help YOUR depression that doesn't seem like a generic twitter self help thread. (Though I'll mention some things I found helpful and give explainations as to why.)

Talk to your therapist/counselor/mental health expert if available. Not everyone has the luxury of seeking professional help, but if you have the opportunity, PLEASE go to a professional. However be noted that it's often an experience to go through many different experts to find the one that matches your specific needs/ you like the most. Also keep in mind there are also online therapists ready to help if you're not big on one-on-one contact like myself, though often insurance is tricky. I put this one first because it might be the most beneficial for some, though not readily available for others.

If you have the strength, shower. Showering/cleaning yourself is a blessing in itself as it gives you a sense of detox. Though if you don’t have the strength or motivation, try some of this instead-

Utilize facewash and lotion. Particularly facewash that makes your face feel all chill and tingly, it makes you feel more refreshed. Lotions and cream will help you keep skin smooth.

Simply get wet with water, a quick 5 minute rinse in hot water is less of a chore than a full shower.

Dry shampoo will help with hair oiliness. Though if you don't have access just brush your hair and pull it/part it so it's out of your face.

Baby wipes. Baby wipes will cure yo soul. But seriously use baby wipes and rub them on your face, underarms, and genitals. A good rub down will help prevent you from feeling gross.

Splashing your face with cold water, it makes your pores tighten up and as a bonus it'll wake you up.

Utilize deodorant and vaseline. I haven't tried it out for myself, though if you put down deodorant and then vaseline on top it should trap the nice fragrant smell. And while you're at it you can put on cologne / perfume if you think you're getting a lil ripe, but if you want to smell like a fresh shower use ones that are labeled "shower fresh" or "baby powder."

If your lips are chapped, put on some balm shisters. (I don't trust the brand chapstick, I'm a conspiracy theorist okay I'm soRRy)

Change into some cleaner clothes. They don't have to be normal everyday clothes but at least change into new clothes, especially underwear.

Clean your fingernails/toenails. Clean under them, since random junk can get stuck up in there. Also clip them if they're too long for your liking.

Brush your teeth. But if you can't, use mints, gum, mouthwash, mouthspray, etc, or a combination of those. Anything minty will make your mouth tingle and feel fresh and clean.

Clean yo ears! Since probably nobody uses an ear vacuum (like you're supposedly supposed to idk I'm too broke for that shit anyways) just be careful using Q-tips.

If you don’t have any deodorant, try hand sanitizer! I'm not kidding. Put a dollop under each underarm, and let dry. Smells are caused by bacteria, so if you get hand sanitizer, it should greatly reduce smell.

Try to get some sun. Using the natural sunlight will help you absorb vitamin D. So open up the blinds and photosynthesize binches. Though it also helps to open up the window if you can, a breeze/fresh air blowing in with the smell of outside might even raise your mood. Though if it's currently shitty weather outside, try turning on your lights to match your circadian rhythm, so keep lights on during the day and dim it at night so it'll help with letting you be on a decent sleep schedule.

Feeling like there's no hope or that your future is going to be shit? Highkey me too, but here's what I do to combat that feeling.

It's corny, but I write a whole idealized future for myself. I write about my dream job, I write about my dream s/o, I even imagine the type of house I want to live in, the kids I'll have, what kind of pets I want to own. Etc. Although the economy is shit and no future is guaranteed, it's nice to put some positivity into light and show what I really want in life. I don't want to be some millionaire, I just want to be comfortably well off with a family and people that love me. And in all honesty a future like that isn't hard to obtain.

Even if you can't imagine a good future for yourself, imagine being a part of your friends or loved one's futures. For example, you know your friend who's dating this really cute person that you totally ship them with? Imagine being a part of the bridesmaids/groomsmen for their wedding when they tie the knot! Imagine your really smart friend finally graduating from college and you're at their graduation party giving them a speech! For me this really helps since I aspire to be drinking buddies with my best friend's future husband. (I'm rlly goofy ik lmao)

Feeling stressed about not doing anything? We've all been there. Try:

Doing work if you're due for assignments, though don't do it alone, if you can, arrange a group text/tutoring session/Skype call. If everyone is focused on getting something done then you'll be motivated to do it with them.

Though if you don’t absolutely have to do anything but want to do ~s o m e t h i n g~ I also got your back on this too.

Organize your inbox for your email. (Ik I'm lame)

Tidy/clean your room/any room if that gives you something to do.

Make your bed.

Cuddle someone/something.

Rearranging your stuff in your room, makes it feel like a whole remodel tbh.

Burn candles/incense. Don't ask just...trust me on this it can change the aura.

If you're religious, practice!

Take aesthetic photos of things in your room. Download VSCO and experiment with it. I also recommend Huji Cam and Afterlight. All are available for IOS and Android.

If you appreciate music- use YouTube and find some Playlists, or if you can, spotify premium will save yo mortal soul.

Like video games? Play some! Or if you're a brokeass like me, let's plays and walk throughs work well too.

If you got pets, pet them. Do it. Snuggle. Or if you love animals in general go and watch some vids on YouTube.

Build a fort.

If you're an artist or appreciate art- draw! Or you can watch animatics, animation memes, art channels, or follow artists on here or on Instagram and Twitter if you want to be inspired, or just observe.

Have a certain series you keep putting off? Watch! It! Netflix/Hulu that shit. Or cable TV works too.

Go on Wikipedia and just go on an adventure. Click from link to link and see where it takes you. Learn some weird new facts!

Read a new book.

Read the news/watch the news.

Write about a certain topic that you're absolutely fascinated about.

Watch movies!

Join a club/interest group. You can do this online too and it'll help meet people with similar interests as you. You can make new friends this way.

Give your friends a call/text. Having conversations will keep you occupied.

Self love aka masturbate. Or have (safe) sex with someone you trust!

Workout

Do some makeup/skincare routine. Even if you think you look bad just commit to practicing.

Sometimes it's just funny to go through and read some Reddit threads so be safe when surfing on there.

Stretch and move around! Dance if you wanna!

Do your hair/experiment in some new styles, maybe even dye it if you feel daring.

Have an icon you stan? Stan HARDER.

Watch iconic vine/rare vine compilations until you can memorize them.

Clean out your phone contacts of people that are irrelevant/toxic!! Out of sight out of mind! Don't hang on to them if they did you wrong. All the text conversations will just make you feel worse!

Actually cook your favorite food, cooking it will make you more dedicated to eating it and give you more of an appreciation for it.

Organize your closet.

Organize anything in your room/closet. Throw away things that you don't need or are too old to use.

Start collecting things, stuffed animals, pins, snowglobes, you name it.

Pinterest is addictive lowkey so try that if you're into that kind of stuff.

Write! Write a new story, write poetry, write about your feelings, write a letter, write fanfiction, express yourself.

Use Duolingo to try and study a new language to learn. (The owl will harass tf outta your email though but as long as you do like 5 minutes a day he won't bother.)

That's about all I can think of but feel free to add more for activities to dedicate your time to.

If you need to, because of your self image, don't go and stand in front of mirrors. If I stand in front of a mirror too long I'll end up scrutinizing myself and find a flaw after flaw. If you are specifically insecure about something with your body, look up models who have the same thing! Like if you're insecure about having vitiligo, look up Winnie Harlow! She's gorgeous! If you're insecure about being chubby, look up plus sized models! If you have a tooth gap, there's plenty of people like you! You don't have to feel ugly because of that when you have these awesome models rocking what they got.

Vent. You can vent to your friends, family, or even online. There are apps that allow you to vent anonymously to others without the fear of judgement. But if you can't do that, take a pen/pencil and write something down in your notebook. Though don't reread it to keep drowning in the negativity, once you write it, shut it. You can do the same on Google Docs online, once you write down everything, delete it. Don't keep trying to fuel your negative thoughts and bitterness, get your rant over with and be done. It's like a fresh start. (Plus on my Instagram spam account I always feel really silly looking at my old rant posts, so I usually delete stuff afterwards when I'm not feeling so in my feelings).

Don't expect recovery to be in a straight line. You'll have amazing days and also have extremely shitty days. Recovery isn't hoping to never experience shitty days, recovery is being able to feel the strength on those shitty days and know that they'll pass, and with each storm you'll be stronger than before. Don't push yourself to be flawless, because shit happens. But you'll make it through. And that's what matters.

And last but not least, seek emergency help if you feel like you're dangerously close to ending your life due to pain. Call the suicide hotline for support, because the pain can ease soon if you ask for the help that you need and deserve.

Not everyone that reads this is going to be like "wow this really helped me cope with my depression/mental illness!" But my goal was to at least try. It may not work for everyone unfortunately, but I hope that anyone dealing with a mental illness is on the road to recovering. Because I know how it feels. It feels sucky as fuck. But if this helps even just one person, then that's enough. I hope everyone has at least a decent day, and I hope that everyone's pain eases soon.

This is my first time making a fic (and posting it), I don't normally make fics (cause I don't rlly like my writing) and this is more of an art blog, but I fail at that too so... This is about deh sky high au (ik it's not rlly popular) and it’s based on this post. Oh and this is tree bros

Evan woke up that morning in a pool of sweat and flowers in his bed. The first day of senior year. He wanted to make a good impression on his teachers but thought about it also the night before and now it just makes his head hurt. The more he thought about it, the roots, vines, and flowers would feel as if they were tightening around him.

“Morning sunshine,” Heidi poked into his room with a basket of laundry. “First day of senior year, hm?” Evan sat up but didn’t look directly at her.

“Yea, I guess...” He said tugging on the hum of his shirt. Heidi set the basket down by the door and sat on Evan’s bed.

“It’s going to be alright. Because,” The roots around Evan grew tighter, “Because life will find a way to turn out. it’s going to be okay.” She stood up and walked into the hall. “Breakfast is downstairs for you, don’t forget to eat.”

Evan decided on a light blue shirt with strips, a nice simple color, nothing too noticeable so he can blend in the hallways easily. He looked at his cast. A reminder that he...

... wasn’t going to change much this year it seems.

It felt like only a minute had gone by and he was out the door walking to school. It was misty out, Evan liked the rain. He decided that walking was peaceful and he would try to focus on something other than the people around him. Where-are they staring? Why would they- maybe because his plants around him are too obvious or maybe they looked weird or maybe because he had a cast showing that he was weak. Or maybe it was the fact that every step he took a flower would sprout from underneath him, and the more he thought about it the quicker they grew-

“is it weird to be the first person in history break their arm from-”

“P-please don’t finish that sentence, Jared.” The flowers stopped growing. It was then Evan realized that he was standing in front of the school.

“So then how did you break your arm?” Jared said taking a step closer. What do you say? You cant just say that you climbed a tree because you-

“I um... I fell out of a tree...” Evan felt vines grow up his back.

“What are you? An acorn?!” And at that moment Evan felt little acorns grow around him, falling from his head. He desperately tried to brush them off, but they kept growing which only made Jared laugh harder.

Once he stopped laughing, they walked into the school. They were in the hall where out of nowhere it seemed, Connor Murphy appeared which gave Evan a mini shock. Evan had him in a few classes from earlier years but never talked to him. He sorta liked his sister, Zoe, but decided that he doesn't even have a chance with her, so why even try?

Evan tried to keep walking, but he noticed Connors’ new hair length. To be honest, he kinda liked it-not that he didn't like it the way it was before, he just never thought of a haircut like that on another boy to be... attractive? Evan didn’t know what to think and couldn't help but wish that Jared won't comment on it. How he was wrong.

“Hey Connor, loving the new hair length. Very troubled teen chic.” Evan froze. It was quiet for what felt like forever until Jared broke the silence. “I’m kidding. It was a joke.” Jared said slowly. Evan could feel the flowers around him bloom, a deep purple, god-he did not mean for this to happen. They always turned a darkish-red shade when he was embarrassed, blue when he’s anxious, (which is a lot) pink when he’s flustered, yellow when he’s happy, and black when he is... on the ground waiting for someone to find him.

“Yea, no it was funny,” Connor then looked directly at Evan. He could feel the roots tighten. “I’m laughing. Can’t you tell? Am I not laughing hard enough for you?” Evan wanted to run. Just get out of the are and just forget everything that is happening right now.

“You’re such a freak.” Jared left, but Evan didn’t. He couldn’t. Physically actually. Vines, flowers, and roots were clinging to his legs. Why did Jared leave him there?!

“Stop fucking laughing at me!” Connor took a step closer. The roots tightened.

“I-i’m not-”

“Is that why there are fucking flowers everywhere?! You think I’m the freak?” God stop. Just stop these flowers, just let him control the plants around him for once just let him breathe just let him-

“N-no, sorry, I”

“You’re the fucking freak!” Connor shoved Evan to the ground and fell onto a bed of flowers. The hate in Connors’ eyes when he did that- it just took Evan by surprise. The roots broke off, Evan sat up and turned around and saw Connor vanish. He must have invisibility in his power.

Evan stood up slowly. He then noticed that roots were completely covering his left arm like he was trying to hide it. He was trying to hide it. Evan brushed the roots off, walking to the bathroom to relax. He found a pink flower fall from his hair.

After school Evan found himself finishing his therapy letter to himself in the computer lab. He could have sworn that he was the last one there, but once again by surprise, Connor appeared out of nowhere.

“Um- Dear Evan Hansen, is this yours?” Connor was standing near the printer and had the paper in his hands.

“U-um yes.” Evan somehow manages to say.

“What happened to your arm?” Evan looked down at his cast, little fines growing around it.

“I-I um, I fell out of a tree..”

“You fell out of a tree? Well, that’s the saddest fucking thing I’ve heard. Evan saw pink petals fall from his head. “What’s with the...”

“Oh, sorry, I just do that s-sometimes, sorry it’s linked to my emotions. Like y-yellow when I'm happy, blue when I'm anxious... so...” Evan looked at his cast, which is now covered in pink flowers.

“What does pink mean?” Connor cocked an eyebrow. Evan felt his face turn red and stomach drop.

“Oh-um,” He hesitated. “um... embarrassment.” He lied. Well, it was kinda true, he was embarrassed. But there was no way Evan could say he liked Connor. God dammit. He had a crush on him.

“Why are you embarrassed?” Connor furrowed his eyebrows a bit, not in a mean way, more of a curious way.

“O-oh, um sorry I, um,” By this point some of the flowers where reaching Connor, who was three meters away. Connor decided to cut him off.

“Nobody signed your cast.” Connor took a step closer.

“O-oh well um, you see, I don’t have t-that many friends-You d-don’t have to-”

“-Oh, right, sorry,” Evan said as he brushed off the flowers and vines and tried his best to control his powers. Connor finished writing his name in big bold letters and picked off a flower off of Evan’s wrist. “Ow.”

“Oh, sorry does that hurt you?”

“Oh- no, not really it’s j-just that you a-are pressing on my cast-” Connor didn't realize that he was still holding Evan’s arm.

“Oops.” He let go and he vanished for a split second. “I fucking do that too much. Anyways, here’s your paper,” Evan reached out for it but Connor then started to read it. Evan put his hand on the paper desperately trying to stop him. “..because there is... pink flower petals in the way?” Connor looked at Evan and cocked an eyebrow. Evan took this chance of his powers going out of control to take the paper.

“S-sorry it’s just a dumb project I have to do- um,” please don’t read the rest of it.

Everything Wrong With Everything Wrong With Across the 2nd Dimension

…Well, this is different. Over on Deviant Art, I’ve started doing Sins post for Sins video/posts because why not. Also, it’s fun and I got the idea from CinemaSinsSins and others.

And since I’m the most sinful person I know, I figured I’d sin one of my posts. I did myself in general, but it’s time to attack a full post. I picked the movie since it’s longer and thus has more problems. Time to see how wrong I am!

1.I messed up the formatting and instead of taking the time to fix it, I just linked to someplace else I put this up on. Fixing it turned out to be easy so why didn’t I do here?

2.”Wasn’t a Goozim a lot smaller in Doof’s flashback, or are they just bigger in this dimmension?” Likely the latter. Either way, it doesn’t matter.

3.”That’s the most abrasive alarm clock ever” Not really, it seems like more of a light prodding. Besides, I’d love an alarm clock that does that, to be honest.

4.”Candace just forgot she put a picture on a beloved stuff animal?” A Flaky teenager forgot something? I’m so surprised.

9.Also, you forgot the quote you’re replying to, anyone who hasn’t seen the movie or doesn’t remember the line won’t know what you’re talking about.

10.”This whole thing starts because Doof wants a couch” Besides that being the joke,not really. I imagine he would have stepped into the portal to see what is on the other side even if the couch wasn’t there.

When did they ever say that? We just know things went better for Doof-2 and he lost the train, but they never state that this exact thing didn’t happen. There’s plenty of reasons he could have better Balloon-y in this world.

12.”“Just in case, vending machines become the dominant race!” You know some nut out there actually thinks this, thanks to thism ovie” Funny joke but not a sin.

13.”I see they save the “charecter finds out the big secret” plot for this movie.” I get how the use of the cliche is a sin but how is saving it for the movie a sin?

14.“You could have been cleaning your litter box this whole time?” That’s one of your biggest concerns about this?” Joke, that’s the.

15.”I’m with Doof, something as simple as that caused all this?” Sigh.

16.”This bit with Phineas-2 and Perry is so sad it’s sin because shut up.” Translation: It’s been more than a minute without a sin so I listed a random thing as a sin because reasons.

17.”Don’t think you can outlaw a season. You can outlaw Summer vacation though. Choose your words carefully, guys.” Oh shut up, you’re just being pedantic.

18.”Perry could find a way to explain to Phineas why he’s doing this, but whatever, this works too.” Phineas didn't exactly give him much of a chance to do. That should have been the sin here.

19.”Once again, good thing a Tv was here so they could see the news update.” In this case, it’s the TV Turning on that was convenient, no the TV itself. Yes that’s pedantic, shut up.

20.”It’s convincent that time works the exact same way in the 2nd dimension, not a second off.” Spongey is fine with a parallel dimension, but when that parallel dimension’s time works the same, that’s crossing the line Dammit!

21.”Candace-2 is a dick to the first dimmension people.” That’s the point

22.”The first scene is repeated, but with dialogue that clearly wasn’t there before.” Do you get points and jokes at all?

23.”How do half of these dimensions even work?” Doesn’t matter, these are just quick gags.

24.”These Citizens see crazy crap all the time but a bunch of robots has them running?” Robots coming out a portal is more alarming than anything P&F have done.

25.”I’m not sure how to word this but I’m sure this whole bit where someone planned out all this crazy stuff in adance that will now help the heroes get ready for the climax is a cliché. It’s also convenient.” Yes, but given how they set it up by establishing they clone Doof’s inventions, it at least makes sense.

26.“But it was obvious in Retrospect” “Buford is now smarter than most of the other kids. Huh.” He’s shown to be slightly smart before and after, how is this a sin?

27.”Quickest Villain Reformation ever.” You know the drill.

28.”How did Monogram and Carl get here so dang fast without anyone noticing?” The first part is fine but the 2nd part doesn’t matter.

29.”. I’d iked to hear Doof’s thoughts on all this. Guess he doesn’t agree cuz he’s locked in that Hannib Lector thing” You just pointed out why this is not a sin.

30.”Both this and the other Vanessa scene feel like those kind of deleted scenes that wouldn’t affected the film all that much if they were left in. The nature of them makes me think they were made FOR this DVD, almost.” But that would have made Wannessa’s absence later on even more of a sin.

31.”If this was in the movie, it would be the first sign something is up as Doof-1 is pretty okay with her boyfriends usually, while Doof-2 is the “Boyfriend hating Dad” cliché” Yes. You’re point is…

how tall are you: 5′6 ? i think ? (i converted it but i don’t really get how it works so i’m not sure if it’s right or not !! but 171cm)

what colour are your eyes: I have boring brown eyes.... I wish i had black eyes they’re awesome or blue they are beautiful

do you wear contacts and/or glasses: glasses ... I suck at putting contacts so I only use them when going out for free and spontaneous peer pressure

do you wear braces: nope, never had to... but I still have a milk-tooth that I had to cover

what is your fashion style: i don’t have money enough to buy nice things style + my mom is very controlling and will vet things and if you buy it anyway she will throw it out of the window style - but I normally dress like: I don’t like to show skin, I don’t fell comfortable in dresses or skirts and I don’t use bright colors or patterns or anything that draws attention to me... so you’ll find mostly in black jeans and plain or simple stamp dark shirt (probably black) bonus points if it’s long enough to end under my butt and something over it (like a sweater or jacket or something ....probably has something to do with my need of not showing skin) and my favorite short boots. There isn’t much for my mom complain and it doesn’t show skin and mostly is comfortable (when it isn’t too hot... i suffer a little when it’s) so it’s what I normally go with

how old are you: old !! how i say since i was little kid(and i’m talking about my five years old self) i was born a 60 years old person and i’m just growing older from there (I don’t only was a kid who had an easier time communicating with adults, but I never wanted to play with the other kids, I have back problems, I would take everything serious and be responsible, I nagged even the adults about wrong and right and so on... I was born old)

what school/ college do you go went to: interior design

what kind of student are you: I have always been a good student, but I talked a lot in class... but now that I think about it I had to teach myself everything because I couldn’t concentrate enough, but I was always an overachiever and the teacher’s favorite, but never the best student (I made a conscious effort to not be the best - second is always better than first as it’s be the second in command in any group, never the leader... you’re good enough to be heard but the attention is not on you... I can’t handle attention).... I was always the one to assemble the power points and group’s essays, because that way I would know that it would be done(I’m always freaking out so I couldn’t handle not know if the others weren’t doing their part or if it wasn’t going to be finished) and I would always research everyone’s part so I knew that it wouldn’t lack one part if that person didn’t do its part, but I would always include the information they researched in the essay, but in that way I at least would know that I wasn’t writing nonsense on the essay when they gave me their part and it would be a tool to help the ones that had a hard time finding their part (I liked to be prepared and I liked to be able to help who needed and I liked to know all the subject being researched, normally a lot more profoundly than needed to do the essay ... as I said overachiever)

what are your favorite subjects: arts, math, statistics and I do love history, but not the school subject (I had a mix of bad and not interested teachers in this one)

what are your favorite movies: i have no idea !! you ask my favorite movie and all movies that I ever watched just vanishes from my mind. I can try to think in a few that I like (but probably not my favorite) I guess...

I listen to music, a lot, while doing everything (I shouldn’t be let alone with my thoughts... ever); I read as much as my concentration and motivation let me; I watch stuff (like tv shows, dramas, movies and not so often: youtube videos); I draw sometimes when my motivation let me(... can I still say that after all this time? there is probably more than a year that I don’t draw anything), I blog and scroll down in the blue hell a lot; I look through and save pins on my Pinterest; I do some diy projects, i really like it but it’s linked to my motivation too so I do less and less stuff as the time passes; there were a time where I would play on my phone but it’s memory it’s too small and I can’t have games anymore; I used to play videogame too but I kind of linked it to my father so I don’t do that anymore; I create stupid stories or scenarios in my head; I really like to play around with photoshop; and I like to learn new things or tricks in things that I already know how to use/do

so you have any regrets: I have only regrets

what is your dream job: i dunno... you have to want to have a future for want to do something in the future i guess

would you like to get married: nope

do you want kids? how many if so: nope... i love kids but nope. Pregnancy is a terrifying thing and everyone painting it as a beautiful full of flowers and rainbows experience is lying. But even if it (pregnancy) wasn’t a problem put another person in this world would not only hypocrite of me, but a really mean thing to do. The world sucks every day more and bring an innocent life to this hell would be mean. Well, if I ever find any will to live I could adopt I guess... the kid is already here and I could at least love her/him, protect and give them the best I can, i guess.... No, I’m too afraid to become my mom, I don’t think I can do that. :(

how many countries have you visited: i can’t even say that i have visited mine... i know like three cities of it. I wish I had ever went to another country.

what was your scariest dream: i dunno... maybe the one where i was in this big ass house that i don’t know and i was running away and i could feel something hunting me and keep entering in different rooms or not being able to open doors and never finding a way out, and i started to run slower and i was terrified and then a very graphic version of the hunter of the left 4 dead that my brain created jumped in front of me and then in my face. Maybe not the worse since I have had several nightmares through my life but pretty terrifying and I remember it know..... and what kind of question is that?! who wants to think about that D:

I am sorry I said something that made you feel like I thought this. I did not intend that at all, and if I could I would go back in time and not say it, because none of the things I’ve said here have been more important to me than you not feeling like I thought this.

Here are some reasons I do not think this:

No one deserves to be raped.

I don’t even think that not liking a particular kind of art is something you can be wrong about. Whitman is (in my opinion) objectively an excellent poet, and I cannot stand his work, I can consistently identify poems by Whitman because I can tell they’re well-written but I loathe them.

No one deserves to be raped.

I have never in my life thought someone deserved to be raped.

People’s opinions on art are not a morally relevant thing. If someone thinks that all abstract art is completely terrible and worthless and not artistic and has zero merit, I think they’re mistaken, but I do not think they are committing the slightest wrongdoing.

Even if someone did something very terrible (something completely unlike not liking abstract art), they would not deserve to be raped.

Because NO ONE DESERVES TO BE RAPED.

I like art but people are so much more important. Even if you had personally and gleefully hunted down and burned every piece of abstract art in the world and danced on the ashes, I would not want you to be hurt as a result. I definitely would not think you deserved to be raped.

Being raped is not a thing someone can deserve.

Your blog is cute and makes me smile every time I see it on my dash and I wish you nothing but good and happiness and definitely not being raped I really want to be super clear on that.

This is not just me having an Abstract Principle that people don’t deserve that, while suppressing some kind of primal belief or something! There are people who have hurt me really badly (in ways that are not even in the same reference class as not liking abstract art) and when I think about them I have an instinctive sort of feeling that they deserve to be punched in the face, which I suppress in favor of my actual belief which is that they do not deserve to be hurt. But this is not like that I have never had it cross my mind for a moment that anyone might deserve even the smallest harm for not liking abstract art, let alone being raped! Please please please believe me on this.

Here are some things, by way of contrast, that I do think you deserve:

marshmallows in your hot chocolate

an extension on your homework

a surprise letter from someone you love who lives far away and you haven’t talked to in a while

ice cream for breakfast

a bird picture on your dash that is so cute that it makes you curl up into a ball and stare at it grinning until your face almost hurts, but not quite, because you should not hurt

a $10 bill in the pocket of your winter coat that you’d forgotten was there when you put it away for the year and find when you take it out again and spend on something you’ve been wanting but couldn’t quite justify getting for yourself

your hair doing the cute thing you like when you brush it this morning without you even having to try

a hug from someone you like giving you hugs, if you like hugs

I hope you get to have at least one of those things today. Please consider arranging one of them for yourself, if none of them happen just by chance. I recommend ice cream for breakfast if it’s warm where you live, or marshmallows in your hot chocolate if it’s cold.

(I am going to tag this post “depression cw”, not because I know if you’re depressed or not, but because I think people who want to avoid seeing posts about depression might want to avoid seeing this one. On the other hand, if you think you might be depressed, you might want to consider that possibility a little further. I know that when I am depressed, I often start feeling like people want awful things to happen to me because of things I have done that are not bad at all. Feeling like that is really unpleasant, and knowing that it’s because of depression is useful for me, because it helps me know what sort of things I can do to stop feeling that way.)

Penzeys Email

Penzeys doesn’t believe in fascism and I love them; this is a wonderful email!

A comment of hope from our last post: “I was a Republican from the time my dad pinned an ‘I like Ike’ button on my chest until Trump. I had to man up and make the change. Not easy but they changed first.” At Penzeys, we believe cooking set our humanity in motion. Our nearly one million years gathered together around the fire taught us true strength does not come from driving others away, but from welcoming others in.

The kindness of tens of thousands of generations of Cooks created our humanity, but racism, sexism, and homophobia can all too easily undermine the goodness Cooks work so selflessly to create in the world. As a business of Cooks, we have decided, for better or worse, we won’t sit idly by while this happens.

Yesterday I was forwarded an email that stated that I had called all Republicans racists and anarchists. I also received another email that said, “Your comments echo those of the desperate left who have no message for the nation other than that of 'All Trump Supporters Are Racist!'”

First off, I don’t believe any human is truly an anarchist. How is anarchy something you can believe in? Not to say that people haven’t posed as anarchists to create a reason to justify crackdowns, or possibly simply to get dates, but no, I’ve never called Republicans anarchists. And on the charge that I’m somehow echoing others calling all supporters of the President racists, I don’t think I was echoing anyone on that notion, I’m pretty sure I was right there at the very beginning hitching the horses to that bandwagon.

One week after the 2016 election I wrote in an email: "The open embrace of racism by the Republican Party in this election is now unleashing a wave of ugliness unseen in this country for decades. The American people are taking notice. Let's commit to giving the people a better choice. Our kindness really is our strength."

In sifting through the replies to that email it was clear that, though not intended, a good number of people seemed to sincerely believe in my statement I was calling all Republicans racists. In the replies from those Republicans who did not vote for the party's nominee, I sensed genuine pain at having the strength of character to not go along with what was happening, but nonetheless be grouped in with those who did. I apologized and said “You are your party's future, and you deserve my admiration and respect, and your country's as well.”

I did go on: “For the rest of you, you just voted for an openly racist candidate for the presidency of the United States of America. In your defense, most of you did so without thinking of the consequences of your candidate's racism because, for most of you, the heartbreaking destruction racism causes has never been anything you or your loved ones have had to experience. But the thing is, elections have their consequences. This is no longer sixty years ago.

“Whether any of us like it or not, for the next four years the 80% of this country who did not just vote for an openly racist candidate are going to treat you like you are the kind of person who would vote for an openly racist candidate. You can get angry at everyone else for treating you like you just did the thing you just did, or you can take responsibility for your actions and begin to make amends.”

Two years and tens of thousands of emails trying to convince me otherwise, haven’t. Voting in the 21st century for what House Speaker Paul Ryan labeled before the election “textbook” racism is indeed an act of racism. The impact on all Americans, whatever their skin tone, of saying you are fine with open racism, or at least don’t see how it should disqualify a candidate for the presidency of the “United” States of America, is a very real and very racist impact caused by your vote.

Does committing a racist act make you a racist? I think the answer to that comes in your response to what you have done and in what you do going forward. Where my thinking has changed in these past two years is that I no longer believe you have to go out of your way to make amends for who you voted for in the past election. All you have to do to make amends for helping to put this president into the White House is to stop supporting him and those who enable him.

For reasons I still have not quite figured out, our last Facebook post really took off and now has over 25,000 comments. In those comments are many much like the one this email starts with that speak to the difficulty of choosing the values the writer was raised with over loyalty to the party they were raised to believe in. That’s not an easy step—more of a leap really. It takes strength. As another customer put it: “Don’t let the label you have slapped on yourself not reflect the truth of what you believe. I grew up in a Republican family, and heck, even my mom isn’t Republican anymore.”

Right now the President is going to great lengths to distance himself from the language of hate that he uses towards immigrants, the press, his previous opponents, and pretty much any American that lives outside the narrow demographic of his support. Instead of taking responsibility for his words, he’s pushing the false notion that those who oppose him are the ones driven by hate and anger. This simply isn’t true. Hate doesn’t drive people to work for racial equality, transgender rights or the welcoming of asylum seekers. What drives us to care about others is our humanity, something Cooks have in abundance.

On that Facebook post, from the likes and warm, positive comments received by those coming to grips with the reality that holding onto their beliefs means letting go of their party, I can tell you that you won’t find any hate on the other side, just kind decent people looking to support you for your courage. With the election less than a week away, now really is the time to choose who you want to be and what you want to stand for. And my thanks to all the Penzeys supporters for the kindness, strength, and compassion found in your comments. Your spirit makes what we do possible.

The Turkish Oregano is great, and great Oregano makes for a good life. The Turkish people do a good job with so much, including Oregano and investigating the murder of journalists. Was a reporter for an American newspaper killed because, with America’s reduced standing in the world these past two years, they thought they could get away with it? Or did they do this to win favor with a President that, time and again, has encouraged his supporters to commit violence against those that report on his actions? Either way, this is not good. Our thanks to the quality investigative work of the Turkish government for exposing this in a way where our president has to deal with it.

And Bavarian Seasoning, too. I love how so many Americans have tried to figure out how to respond to what is happening and how to use their skill set to make a difference. Maybe it’s just coincidence that has Mr. Steves addressing so very effectively the rise of fascism in Europe at just this time, but I’m guessing it’s not. One of the points he makes is our belief that it can’t happen here, it can only happen in places like Germany, is simply wrong. Germany had great art, they cared enough to create a great food culture, they invented kindergarten. The reality is, if it could happen there, it could happen anywhere. Watch this if you have the chance and pass it along to others. This is amazing work. Thanks for the recommendation.
