despite making a destiel meme on here that got incredibly popular, i have never seen a single full episode of supernatural. however, my best friend @res-spectans is a huge fan of the show, so she’s shown me the 15x18 scene™️ before (which is why i was able to make the meme LMAO). a couple of nights ago i was sleeping over and late into the night we were very delirious and decided to watch a compilation of deancas highlights on youtube. and holy fuck…

supernatural fans HOW DID YOU DO THIS FOR 11 SEASONS STRAIGHT. all it took was that one 20-minute compilation of their best moments and i was IMMEDIATELY convinced that they were in love. actually i didn’t even need the 20 minutes. even the very first clip from that video was actually some sick fuckery. the absolute journey i was taken on in those 20 minutes of homophobic queerness was just… wow. if i had adequate words to describe the buffoonery that must’ve been going through the creators of this show’s minds then i think i’d be on a hit list. HOW WERE THOSE TWO NOT TOGETHER??? ur telling me there was literally an episode with a wholeass plotline about dean refusing to let cas die a virgin? the show deadass acted like they didn’t explore each other’s bodies even ONCE?? and THERE WAS A WHOLE EPISODE WITH DESTIEL IN A FUCKING MUSICAL?!?!? like they FULLY ACKNOWLEDGED THE QUEERBAITING THEY WERE DOING AND STILL ACTIVELY CONTINUED TO DO IT?? i’m sorry but there is quite literally no way. not to even mention all of the romance tropes they fulfill. cas breaking out of the brainwashing (i’ve also been informed that dean was originally going to say “i love you” there like HUH)?! THE MIXTAPE? neither of them ever denying anyone who called the other one their boyfriend?? “dean and i share a more profound bond” WHAT. dean calling cas devastatingly handsome? maybe it was because i was sleep deprived but by the time we were done with the compilation my ribs were aching from how much i was CACKLING. i was just in absolute disbelief at the absurdity of it all. like,,, people dared to call this subtext? this was the gayest shit i have EVER SEEN. if you are actually a fan of this show then i am so fucking sorry. i cannot believe you all just sat through that for 11 seasons and then had it confirmed in the end by castiel being sent to SUPERHELL. you gays deserved so much better and SO DID DESTIEL.

Second of all, I did not join Tumblr with the intention of making a bunch of lists, but they’re fun to write and people seem to enjoy them, so here goes.

10. Justin x the Beetroots MC (headcanon)

Listen, I do NOT condone the whole “if they’re bullying you, that means they like you” bullshit. That being said, years and years later, after both of them have grown as people, I think they could have a really sweet relationship, at least after they work through everything.

9. André Beetroot x Xavier (canon, somehow)

I kind of ship this in a joking way, but also kind of not? They make sense together in a really weird, fucked-up way, and I’m so here for it. (I cannot believe that they’ve canonically hooked up. Multiple times. I love AJ so much for giving us this.)

It’s so toxic. It’s so toxic, and I know that, and it would never be okay in real life, but some dark part of me is really fascinated by the possibilities. (I cannot emphasise enough how much I am intrigued by this in FICTION ONLY.)

Complete turnaround from the last two, but these two are genuinely so sweet. I honestly don’t even have much to say about them, but I love them. So much.

They are so toxic. They’re horrible people, and they only make each other worse. And I love it. (You know, making this list did make me worry about my mental health slightly. Just slightly.)

5. Toby x the meth wife (canon)

First of all, this is the gayest straight-presenting relationship I’ve ever seen, and I love it. (I totally headcanon them both as bi/pan/queer/etc., but that’s not the point of this post.) And honestly, they’re so supportive of each other. They’re, like, genuinely a healthy couple (in a SFTH play? Can you imagine?). They have so much love for each other, and I could talk about them all day, but I’m fairly sure no one needs that, so I’ll stop.

4. Andrews x Betruva (headcanon)

Listen, I might be a little biased because they’re new, but they kind of have everything I look for in a ship. They have millennia of history, which is always a good start. They’re ancient nemeses. They founded a church named after them both???? Honestly how much more gay can you get?

3. Esmerelda x the vampire slayer (canon)

I like to imagine that Esmeralda survived, and they fall in love, and they have to work through the trauma of the slayer (I think I saw the fanon name Samantha? But I’m not sure) trying to kill Esmeralda. There’s just so much angst potential, and oh, now I want to write a fanfic.

2. Bubba x Jeramiah (canon)

They’re a fucking classic, okay, and they’re a classic for a reason. They are the best gay cowboys, and I love them so much. I know I should have more to say, but I feel like it would just be incoherent screaming.

Listen, who else could it be? They are so fundamentally amazing. It’s a classic case of “he fell first, he fell harder” (even if we don’t get to see a lot of the “he fell harder” part, I believe it with all my heart). I love Titch working though his issues and learning to open up, and I love Derek being so helplessly in love with him. I love them so much, and they deserve the top spot.

Harry Potter: I’m gonna be honest I project on this man far too unhealthily to NOT be biased (I’ve been going by the name Harry in IRLfor 3 and a half years now I think? Bc of this man /srs) but that man’s bi with a capital B 💕💜💙 personally I enjoy seeing trans man Harry as well but unfortunately I don’t see as many fanfics of him as such :,) shoutout to all the fanfic creators I see making Harry a trans woman tho!!! Hermione Granger: trans woman!!! 🏳️‍⚧️ *crowd cheers* as for sexuality wise? I’ve seen her depicted as straight, bisexual and lesbian- and honestly I think I can see her fitting all of these!!!

Ronald Weasley: I always struggle to pinpoint what I headcanon Ron to be. I have seen a couple of people headcannoning him as a trans man 🏳️‍⚧️- referencing Molly continuing to have children until she had a girl creates perfect levels of angst for this- but I wouldn’t say it’s a permanent aspect of him inside my head. Now that I think about him a little more- I think I might headcanon him as unlabeled more than anything sexuality wise. I think he’s into women but he wouldn’t be opposed or too surprised if he developed a crush on a guy.

Luna Lovegood: She’s a lesbian 🏳️‍🌈💕 (I will occasionally accept fanfics where she is pan and is with Neville but her being a lesbian is the main headcanon) also a little gender queer in whichever way you choose 🏳️‍⚧️ sometimes I see her as genderfluid, bigender and just generally nonbinary

Ginny Weasley: bi- so so bi 💕💜💙

Draco Malfoy: Gayest motherfucker in town I’m sorry- Mr. Tells his father literally everything about Harry 💚🤍💙

Tonks: (She/they) Lesbian and Intersex 🏳️‍🌈💕💛🟣. I’m sorry but the age gap between Remus and her in the original books make me uncomfortable- as for being intersex, I think most ppl believe being a metamorphmagus means she is automatically genderfluid, while I like seeing genderfluid representation, I think ppl often fail to acknowledge the difference between sex and gender. As a metamorphmagus, she transforms her body, her gender doesn’t seem to change w it in the books. While I like the headcanons of them being genderfluid I wish more people explored that specific idea.

Severus Snape: queer? Queer. In every sense of the word. I think most people view him as bi 💕🟣💙 which I agree with (Lily and Mulciber, also absolutely headcanon him having a crush on both Lucius AND Narcissa) but also I think he’s a little bit gender funky- I mean just look at him- no one who stands like that isn’t just cis /ref. Sev absolutely painted his nails and did eyeliner, he absolutely wore a floor length black skirt and absolutely had days where mister hit wrong in all the right places and everyone in her group helped by doing tiny things like braiding her hair and putting bat clips in it for fun 🏳️‍⚧️

Queer books I haven’t seen anyone talk about (but are really good)

Teach the Torches to Burn by Caleb Roehrig

This book is the one I’ve read most recently. It is a queer retelling of the classic Romeo and Juliet set in the 1300s with a couple of twists that shape the story into something new and refreshing. While reading it, I could never guess what was going to happen next because I wasn’t sure where it would parallel the original tale of Romeo and Juliet and where it would split off into its own story. It has a gay main character, an mlm relationship, talks about the struggles of being queer in older times and unaccepting spaces, and has multiple queer characters. It also discusses freedom and liberty to live the life you want to live. I would highly recommend reading it if you enjoy queer themes and historical settings!

You Know Me Well by Nina LaCour and David Levithan

This book tells the story of two people who meet and form a deep bond with each other, where through all the trials of their day-to-day lives, they feel like they have someone who finally knows them well. It tells the story of friendship, communication, and having someone to talk to who understands you. To put it short, this book is probably the gayest book I’ve ever read (which is saying something—I read a lot, and mostly queer books). There are maybe one or two characters in the entire book who are straight, and they aren’t directly involved in the main plot. There is a lot of LGBTQ representation, and it’s fairly diverse, with multiple types of queer people and experiences. It’s a coming of age story of sorts, with the main characters figuring out who they are and what they want. I’d definitely recommend giving this book a read!

Candidly Cline by Kathryn Ormsbee

This is another coming-of-age book, with a girl discovering what it’s like to be queer in a town that isn’t particularly accepting. A main theme in the book is Cline, the main character, working hard to achieve what she wants to do in life—music—despite her mother’s wishes otherwise. It has sweet moments of young love, as well as some not-so-sweet moments of homophobia and hatred, but overall this is a book about hope, resilience, and how kindness can change someone’s life for the better.

So This Is Ever After by F.T. Lukens

So This Is Ever After is a fantasy rom-com that explores the unanswered question of what happens after the Chosen One saves the day. The characters are lovable and funny, their relationships with each other well-established, and the banter witty and hilarious. It includes childhood friends to lovers, the classic ‘Chosen One’ trope, and lots of miscommunication (so if you don’t like that trope, I’d suggest skipping this one because it is the main driver of the plot). The main character is probably somewhere under the bi umbrella (although we don’t get any confirmation on this because they don’t use labels) and there are diverse queer characters, including a character who uses they/them pronouns, a character who is suggested to be polyamorous, and numerous other unlabeled queer characters. There are so many moments between Arek and Matt (the main character and his best friend/love interest) that are full of pining and anticipation that it feels like a big sigh of relief when they finally get together. I personally love this book, and to any book lovers of magic and romance, I recommend giving this book a read.

I Think I Love You by Auriane Desombre

This book is a sweet story of two girls who fall in love despite themselves. The main characters are bi and lesbian, and each one talks about their experiences being out of the closet (or not), being queer, and how it causes others to perceive them differently and have expectations about who they’re interested in. They are both a part of a friend group, and the book explores the dynamics of the group together, both with and without the main characters there. It also includes themes of honesty and being yourself, along with knowing who to give your trust to. The main characters have their ups and downs in their relationship, but ultimately it is a story of queer love and pride. I’d recommend this book if you’re looking for a short but sweet story about friendship and love.

Loveless by Alice Oseman (or anything by Alice Oseman, really)

The only people I see talking about this book are people who are aspec, so I’m counting it (also because it’s my favourite book ever). The plot of the book is Georgia, the main character, going on a journey and figuring out she’s aroace (aromantic and asexual—look them up if you need to). It has multiple queer characters and great diversity—the main character is aroace, obviously, and there’s also a lesbian character, a pansexual character, a gay alloace character, and a bisexual aroallo character. The process of Georgia discovering she’s aroace is long and bumpy, but it’s relatable and captures many of the feelings I and many other aroaces have perfectly. It shows how friends are as important as romance, and even more important for someone like Georgia (of course, it isn’t essential for everyone, but it’s an important part of Georgia’s life). All the characters are fleshed out and lovable in their own ways, and their dynamics are easy to adore. I’d DEFINITELY recommend Loveless for any aspecs who haven’t read it yet, and I’d also recommend it to anyone who wants to explore more hidden queer identities such as asexuality and aromanticism.

Never Ever Getting Back Together by Sophie Gonzales

I love this book because it explores the duality of love and hate, and how they aren’t that different in the grand scheme of things. The main characters are both mspec and end up falling in love, and it’s a wlw rivals to lovers situation where they both have opposing perspectives on the same situation. The buildup of their relationship with the struggles it has makes it very satisfying at the end when they get together and work out their issues. It also portrays manipulation in a very realistic way. Overall, I highly recommend this book!

(In no particular order.)

* They live together and co-parent a child.

* Actually say aloud they want more kids. Together.

* Fostered a second child, for a brief period of time. Likely would have adopted him if the law permitted it. (Ooh, now I’m sad.)

* They call each other “babe.” Constantly.

* Michael’s whole speech to his mother defending his relationship with Joey as parents. Even bringing up that she’d be happier if he was married to a woman. It was treated deadly serious. No laugh track.

* Joey calls Michael’s mom his “mother-in-law.” And she calls him her “son-in-law.” Again, no laugh track for these comments.

* Mrs. Taylor being the almost stereotypical neurotic mother of a gay man. Think Mrs. Bates. (Sorry, Michael.)

* Joey’s father struggling to understand his son’s choices in life mirroring conversations parents have with their queer offspring.

* Nicole walking in on them “pillow fighting” in the “Joey’s MIL” episode. Joey was trying to suffocate Michael in anger, but the implication that they were having “adult time” was still obvious.

* Michael dressing up in drag as Joey’s pregnant wife (Felicia) with whom he has 10 children.

* They frequently touch each other. Clothes adjustments, face grabbing, friendly punches, pats on the back, etc.

* Constant winking comments like “does this mean we’re dating again?” “whatever happened to ‘honey, I’m home’?” and “how come you never send me roses?”

* Alludes to their separation as a “divorce” in “Pop, The Question.” Played almost completely straight.

* They go to a marriage counselor in the same episode.

* “We’re nothing like a married couple!”

“How would you describe your relationship?”

“We live together, we raise a kid, we fight like hell. So, what, every Thursday?”

* Are somewhat hesitant in their responses to the “are you gay?” question she poses. (Michael STILL calls Joey “babe” in their answers.)

The Gallavich Disney Saga

Not done, but here are some Disney World bits from part 3 of my fic Soft Bitch. Thank you to all my lovelies who helped with the ideas. Almost every bit was used, or will be used. :)

Some notes: Franny goes by Finn. Idk what the fuck happened to Lip and Tami's other kid. Carl is chaos.

It takes a quick minute, but with Finn’s hair tied back into the usual ponytail, she beams, putting on a matching Hawaiian shirt, just like Mickey’s.

Ian comes out of the shower, q-tip in his ear. “God, there’s two of them.” He’s joking, but it still makes him laugh. Finn had insisted on wearing a matching one with Mickey, and Ian swears if she were to ever dye her hair black, she’d be a mini-Mick. Not so much in looks, but in personality.

“We’re here to wreck things up,” Finn says, grinning. She knows not to swear around the twins, especially with Ally being pretty repetitive. Around Ian and Mickey, she’s allowed, but not as much as they do.

Carl comes back from the bathrooms, staring straight at Finn and Mickey. “Shit,” he says, turning to Ian. “Aren’t gays supposed to be good at fashion and shit?”

Lip snorts, hiding his smirk.

Out of what felt like nowhere, Carl emerges with Liam. Liam shakes his head. “I think driving with Carl is a deathwish.”

“Shit,” Mickeys says, adjusting his hat. “I think Finn’s got a knack for runaway cars.”

Lip gets out of line and shakes his head. “Drive with Fred. Won’t go above what, two miles?”

“Okay,” Ian says. He’s smirking. “C’mon, Lip,” Ian says, dragging his brother’s hand. “We’re going to go on the teacups until we puke.”

“Ian, are you fucking serious?”

“You promised.”

“I—“ Lip then starts laughing. “That fucking promise I made when I was what, seven? Eight?”

“So you do remember.”

Ian does not throw up, but Lip almost does. Laughing, Ian gives his brother a light nudge. “Worth it.”

Lip’s eyes soften just a bit. “Okay, yeah. It wasn’t as shit as I thought.” But in reality, seeing his little brother laugh like that was something Lip hadn’t seen in what felt like years. It probably was years, looking back on everything. Back before girls, and boys, and when they were LipandIan. Lip stands up on his toes to kiss his brother’s forehead.

yay i’ve been wanting to talk about these silly guys :D (also adding Sawyer in cuz he’s Dew’s best friend, just not his roomate)

i’ll start with personalities:

so Layla is just overall very silly but also extremely smart and a genuinely nice and caring person. she’s the embodiment of quirky weird girls but doesn’t let people’s negative opinions of her affect her life. she loves animals and nature, especially insects and plants (also frogs and cats). she also really likes astrology but idk what her star sign is cuz i haven’t figured out their birthdays yet. she likes watching cartoons and anime with Dew and Sir Bonkles. she’s also a programmer and video game developer i think, her and Hayden wanna make a game together :3

Layla’s pronouns are she/her, she’s 23, autistic (because i can’t write a neurotypical character for the life of me), shes trans, bi, and 5’4 (one inch taller than Dew HAHAHA)

Hayden is my blorbo i love him. he’s a super nice and playful person, often goofing around and trying to make his friends laugh and have fun. he’s very hyper a lot and def has golden retriever energy. he loves reptiles and will not stop talking about them to anyone who would listen (same) and spends lots of time with his snake Mars. he loves to play video games but also likes being active outside and plays some sports. he and layla are definitely the two extroverts of the group lols

Hayden’s pronouns are he/they, he’s 23, he’s also autistic and has a special interest in reptiles, he’s got ADHD, he’s asexual, pan, and he’s 5’6 (my height)

Sawyer’s a mystery. he’s very closed off and reserved, doesn’t like talking to people much and doesn’t have much friends. but he’s really really nice when you get to know him, it just takes him a while to open up to people because of his social anxiety. he loves to play video games (his special interest) and is overall very introverted. but he loves his dog Rufus more than anything and spends a lot of time taking him on walks outside. he’s also kinda punk rock and has some piercings and tattoos, and he likes playing guitar and making music with Dew :)

Sawyer’s pronouns are he/she and she’s bigender, he’s 22, autistic, has OCD, she’s pansexual, and is 6’1 (the youngest AND tallest of the group)

alright so now their dynamics with each other and Dew:

Sawyer is Dew’s childhood best friend, they’ve been through everything together. Sawyer also has a crush on Dew, but has been too scared to tell him for years. after Dew’s parents died and he moved in with Layla and Hayden, he and Sawyer kinda started drifting further apart. this is because Sawyer didn’t know the other two that well, and she’s just a really socially awkward person and is scared talking to new people. also some other secret spoiler stuff i can’t say, but yeah.

EVERYONE AT RINK O MANIA IS GAY

watching Youtube reaction videos of TFATWS is such a weird experience because most of the folks doing them NEVER mention Sam/Bucky as a pairing. and when they do it's almost always as a side comment or as a joke. even with the batshit insane field roll scene and the couples' therapy, two of the gayest scenes I've ever witnessed in the MCU, people are still just glossing over it, while I'm over here losing my mind over their chemistry and the tropes they're using and how domestic they are like???

Thoughts on Thomas and Alastair reading red white and Royal blue together in modern AU.

Imagine them in bed right after dinner cause they're one of those couples who ditch their friends to read

Thomas coming back home with this book Matthew and Cordelia have been ranting about for the past weeks

And Alastair is weirded out by the fact that he has two copies, "Why would you buy two?"

Thomas just shrugs, "I didn't. Cordelia gave me hers, cause she told me you'd spoil anything the second you read it."

They settle in bed and Alastair waits until Thomas is ten pages in to start his, cause Cordelia wasn't wrong about him spoiling everything

Thomas is a calm reader, only crying when you're supposed to cry and reading a book without having to talk about it for the rest of your life

Alastair is the complete opposite

He frowns and screams at the books and always goes to Thomas to make him read single sentences before starting to rant about what fucked up shit the characters are doing

Thomas usually doesn't understand anything of what he says, but he also stops doing whatever he's doing, focusing all his attention on Alastair until he just storms out of the room to continue reading the book

Alastair is also a ugly crier when it comes to books

He once hit Thomas by mistake and it was because of a character's death. Imagine his guilt just adding to his grief and picture a very distraught Alastair while he's being coddled by his boyfriend

Alastair has laughed and chuckled way too many times in Thomas' opinion, but hasn't commented on anything yet

"What?"

"ALEX IS SAYING HENRY'S SKIN IS SOFT."

Thomas is enjoying the book just as much, but he can't wait for the moment when they both realise they like each other, so he just keeps reading

"Alex was fAST starting to see Henry as a human being and not some kind of monster."

After a few minutes of silence, Alastair gasps, bringing his book higher and buring his face between the pages before screeching again.

"WHAT'S GOING OOON?"

Thomas snorts with wide eyes

"HE'S CHECKING FOR HENRY'S TEXTS!!!"

After a while, Alastair turns to Thomas, brushing his arm, "Are you liking it?"

He nods, "I like the fact that Henry uses capitals at the beginning of his texts while Alex doesn't, it's the little things."

During The Turkey Scene™️ Alastair just loses it and Thomas has to stop reading to calm him down

"Oh god Tom fucking finally-" he turns to Thomas, "Henry looks fucking rested for once."

Thomas nods again, "And Alex noticed."

That makes a wide grin spread over Alastair's face

Thomas understands he's reached the New Year's Eve when all he can hear from Alastair are gasps and curses

"NO. NONONO. NOO!" Alastair hits Thomas on the arm, "Alex just kissed Nora and Henry ran away."

Thomas smirks, "Just keep reading."

"THEY'RE KISSING. GOD YES. THEY'RE KISSING."

"Thomas I'm breaking up with you if you don't tell me now this is gonna be fixed somehow in the next three pages."

Thomas turns when he hears the hesitancy in his boyfriend's voice. Alastair's face is red and he's biting his lower lip

"You okay? What part are you reading?"

"No, uhm," Alastair scratches his head, "can we -" he clears his voice, "Can we make out?"

Thomas blinks a couple of times, "Sure."

A heavy make out session ensues before they both can start reading again

"We need to buy cupcakes tomorrow." Alastair mutters at some point, chewing on his lip

"Thomas this fucking book is the best thing I've ever read. I'm loving it so much."

Alastair closes the book around midnight, but Thomas knows he's not finished. He doesn't look his way thinking he's just gonna go to the bathroom

When Thomas senses him move around on the sheets and lay his head on hip lap, he closes the book too and look down at his boyfriend

"What's going on? We just made out."

Alastair grunts in his legs and looks up at him, "You're my match."

Thomas doesn't understand, but he smiles and leans down to kiss him

He resumes reading and realises Alastair had read more than him when he reaches Alex's and Ellen's conversation about matches. Thomas looks at Alastair once again and pesters him with kisses

It's around 3am when Alastair starts yawning

"Alas, you should go to bed."

He shakes his head, "No, I'm not tired, I wanna finish the book."

"The book will be here tomorrow."

"I don't care."

He drops the fight, knowing perfectly fine that he'll never win this

Alastair can be quite impressive when he finds something he likes - especially when it's books

"Fucking homophobes."

"I'm gonna riot if somebody doesn't let Alex call Henry right the fuck now."

The end of the book is read so fast that Thomas can't keep up with him and is now more than 20 pages back

Alastair is a crying and screaming mess by the end of it and Thomas has never seen him so upset in their time together

He's just spoiled the whole book for him, but he doesn't care. He doesn't care that it's now 5am and they have work in a couple of hours, cause Alastair just looks his way with wide eyes and his mouth open as if he's just realized something shocking

“David! I’m getting a divorce!”

That is decidedly not what David had expected to hear at 7:45 on a Thursday morning, but at least Katherine seems happy about it. It takes a few moments for him to fully process the gravity of the situation, but David is quick to adapt, raising a brow and staring at her with a confused smile. “Uh- huh, that… Wow? Good? Oh no? How- How do I respond to that?”

“Good! It’s good!” Katherine squeals as she sits down, on top of one of the spare desks stored in David’s room. She already looks different, more carefree; she’s wearing her hair up, has on bolder makeup than usual, and is wearing a pair of fitted slacks, heels, a blush colored blouse and a blazer rather than her typical dress. “I’m checking in at the motel for a while until I can find myself somewhere to stay, but we talked it out and he agreed with me and everything is fine, so, yeah! Last night was the last time we’re ever going to sleep together, so it was a special occasion and I’m a little hungover, but don’t tell anyone,” Katherine chirps quickly, looking at David with a wide grin.

That is a lot to take in. He looks at her as he leans back against his desk, crossing his arms in front of him. “I’m sorry, did you say you slept with Jack after agreeing to divorce? Like, slept in the same bed?”

“Nope. We fucked.”

“I-- Wow, okay. Kath, that’s not a mental picture I needed to see.”

“Unless you think about Jack alone, right?”

David nods before he can stop himself. As soon as he does so, his eyes widen and he immediately shakes his head, staring at Katherine as his jaw drops. “Wait, no! No, no, I don’t-- What? No, that isn’t-- I’m not-- No!”

Katherine doesn’t look convinced.

David hesitates for a moment before giving in and sighing, hiding his face in his hands. “Look, Kath, I am so sorry… It’s just- It’s a stupid little crush. Nothing substantial, and nothing happened, I promise. He doesn't even know, and--"

“Wait, you think I’m upset?” She asks with an amused tone. “David, this is the best thing that’s ever happened to us! I think you two would be really good for each other.”

“Shouldn’t you be the one to know that your husband is straight?” David asks with a raised brow, then blinks. “Unless-- No, no, I don’t want to hear any more. If something is going to happen, then I want to hear it from him first. I don’t want to speculate.” He runs a hand through his hair and sighs, then looks at Katherine. “What… What are you trying to say?”

“I’m trying to say that this is something I give you permission to pursue. Not that you need it, of course; you’re a grown man. You can do what you want,” She says simply, before standing and taking a few strides toward David. “But if you like Jack, then I want you to go for it. I won’t mind. I don’t know how he’ll feel, I don't know if he'll feel the same way, but… it’s worth a shot.”

David looks down at her with a hesitant look, before giving a sharp nod. “Noted. Thank you… I just-- If and only if he feels the same. I... don’t want to be a rebound? I’ve been in that situation. It’s never, ever good for my mental health.”

“Then take things slow and see where it leads," Katherine says gently, then bites her lip. "But I’ve known Jack since sophomore year, Davey, and he isn’t the kind of guy to do something like that. I promise,” She murmurs  sincerely, gently squeezing David’s shoulder. “Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to go do some paperwork.”

David watches as she walks toward the classroom door. He thinks for just a moment, and opens his mouth before he can stop himself. “Hey, Kat?”

“Hm?”

“Stay with me until you find a place,” David says simply, looking at her with a grin. “Don’t waste your money on a motel. I have a spare bedroom you can take, so… Stay with me. It’s the least I could do, since you’ve helped me so much these last few weeks. I-- My sister is coming into town this weekend, so I’ll be sleeping on the couch, but the spare room is yours.”

Katherine considers it, then smirks. “I hope you’re ready for all night Gossip Girl marathons.”

“As long as we throw a few episodes of Glee in, I’m down.”

“Trashy reality TV?”

“A must have, obviously. Sappy romcoms?”

“I have a whole box of DVDs,” Katherine grins, then gives David a wave and walks toward the door. “I’m staying with Hannah tonight- she's a friend of mine. Works with Jack," She explains with a broad sweep of her hand. "But I’ll see you tomorrow! Get ready for some Blake Lively action!” With that, she leaves the room, giggling down the hall.

David shakes his head as she walks away, letting out a content sigh. For once, he feels... Good. Excited. He’s looking forward to Katherine staying over, for as long as she needs to, of course. It would be good. He has… a friend.

That’s the first time it really hits him that he has a friend. Katherine and Jack are his friends, his real friends, and David is so glad to have them in his life.

But he needs to check up on Jack.

That afternoon, David says goodbye to Katherine in the office before heading outside the front doors. He walks down the sidewalk for a few moments, but stops in his tracks when he sees a familiar deep blue truck in the parking lot, and hears a familiar deep voice softly singing along to an old Johnny Cash song.

David grins to himself and walks toward the truck. His smile only grows wider when Jack notices him and rolls the driver’s side window down, waving. “Davey! Hi!”

David shakes his head, hurrying toward the truck. “What are you doing here, cowboy?”

“Well, ya see, I was gonna pick up my ex, but she told me she was workin’ late while I was already here, so I decided to stay and pick up the only adult I know who doesn’t own a car,” Jack says with a smirk, hanging one arm out of the window. He’s still in his professional "I'm A College Professor, Respect Me" clothes- navy slacks, a white button up with the sleeves rolled to his forearms, and a navy vest. He seems to have already taken off his tie, but he’s wearing glasses and oh, God, David is weak at the knees.

“See, I knew not owning a car would come in handy,” David teases back, leaning up against the door of the truck. “I am the responsible and economically-friendly adult who doesn’t own a truck that emits tons of carbon emissions into the atmosphere each year that you’re talking about, right?”

“That’s the gayest thing I’ve ever heard you say. Get in the truck before I leave you here, dumbass.”

“Yes, sir,” David replies with a chuckle, walking around the vehicle to climb in. He sighs as he sits down and leans back, buckling up as Jack pulls out of the parking spot. “Hey, so, I... I know that the whole Katherine thing didn’t work out. How’re you holding up?”

“I think I’m doin’ good,” Jack replies with a sigh, looking straight ahead at the road in front of them. “It’s… It’s a good thing. Right? I mean, it’s an amicable split. We aren’t fighting over the house, ‘cause it belonged to my family, and we already figured out who gets to keep what last night after... yeah. Plus, this’ll be good for… me. Give me the chance to, uh, figure some things out. Self exploration, that’s what Kath said.”

That sounds promising, but David refuses to get his hopes up. “Well, if you need anything, let me know. I'm here for you, Jackie,” David offers with a soft elbow nudge, grinning. “So, the house belongs to your family?”

“Belonged. Past tense. They’re all, uh, gone.”

“Oh, shit, I'm sorry. I didn't realize."

“No, hey, it’s chill. I kinda figured Kath would tell you about it, but I guess not,” Jack says with a shrug and a glance toward David, offering him a sad smile. “My mamá, her family owned it. They moved to America in the ‘30s. Stayed in Texas for a while, but they came up this way for work. My great grandfather worked here in Tarrytown, and actually helped build the house, plus a few others around town. There were some… family issues regarding ownership of the house, so it was sold to a different couple when I, uh… moved, but Kath and I bought it after we got out of college. It’s been renovated, but it’s a piece of history.”

“I figured that you were hispanic, but I didn’t want to assume,” David says softly. It feels really nice to learn a little bit more about Jack in such an intimate way. "That-- Sorry, I just... yeah. The house is really cool."

“Ya don't gotta be sorry for wonderin', Davey. I'm Mexican,” Jack clarifies with a grin. “If ya can’t tell by me bein’, y’know, brown. My great grandpa, Francisco- he and his wife, Dorotea, brought their three kids over. My abuela met my abuelo here in Tarrytown and had my ma. My mother’s maiden name was Maria Velásquez, but she married a guy named Daniel Kelly, so that’s where I come in,” Jack explains with a deep chuckle, shaking his head. His smile soon fades, though. “She passed when I was ten, and my dad… He’s gone. My adoptive mom lives in Connecticut now, too, so now it’s just… me.”

“Shit, Jack…” David bites his lip, looking over at him with a concerned expression. He rubs the back of his neck, gulping hard. “If it’s any consolation, I’m glad you were able to get the house. To, y’know, have something of your family. I'm sorry you had it so rough, though.”

“Thanks, Dave,” Jack says with a grin, then shrugs. “And don’t get all down on me now. It’s been eighteen years since that shit went down, so I’m good. Really,” He nods, and there are a few moments of silence that pass before Jack turns to look him in the eyes. “Hey, are you free for a little bit?”

David really should have said no. He really should have avoided being anywhere alone with Jack for a prolonged amount of time, because this was only going to end in heartbreak.

But, then again, David has been through worse.

hollywood stars and truck tires: dorothea, tis the damn season, & tim mcgraw

Alright, y’all, here we go again. (Alexa, play Mamma Mia by ABBA.) We’re back with another one of Ria’s unhinged gay lyric analyses, only I don’t think this one is very unhinged after all (at least not until we get to the “Tim McGraw” side of things). “dorothea” is undoubtedly the gayest song on evermore, so it’s only right that this is how I kick things off. And of course, we’ll be tackling “tis the damn season” because it’s the sister song to “dorothea.” This analysis isn’t going to focus on any gaylor ships because I’m inclined to believe Taylor when she says this one is fictional—“dorothea” might be based on real emotions, but I don’t think she represents a real person in Taylor’s life. (Feel free to disagree, though!)

So, without further ado: “dorothea” is gay, and here’s why. 

To begin with the obvious, this is yet another song in which Taylor (regardless of whether she is writing from someone else’s perspective) explicitly sings a love song to a woman. Here are lyrics I think make this a love song rather than a song about platonic friendship:

honey, making a lark of the misery

it’s never too late to come back to my side

the stars in your eyes shined brighter in Tupelo

but are you still the same soul I met under the bleachers?

“Honey,” while not exclusively used in a romantic context, is a term of endearment often used by lovers. Combined with the “stars in your eyes” part, I think the relationship between Dorothea and the speaker is a romantic one. Meanwhile, “back to my side” could imply a previous romantic relationship. It could also refer to the idea of “picking a side” with regard to being gay or straight (yes, this saying is flawed because it ignores bisexuality, but it is something I have heard people say before). In this context, the line could be interpreted as the speaker telling Dorothea that it doesn’t matter if she’s gone off to Hollywood and dated men, she is still free to return home to her (female) high school sweetheart.

And finally… if Dorothea and the speaker were just platonic besties, what, pray tell, were they doing under the bleachers?!

Paired with the following lyrics from “tis the damn season,” which seems to be from Dorothea’s view, it’s fairly obvious that these two had a romantic relationship in the past:

the road not taken looks real good now/and it always leads to you and my hometown

you could call me “babe” for the weekend

the heart I know I’m breakin’ is my own/to leave the warmest bed I’ve ever known

Notably, there are no male pronouns describing the love interest in “tis the damn season.”

If you’re still not convinced that “dorothea” is a love song, see Taylor’s own words in the album notes: “Dorothea, the girl who left her small town to chase down Hollywood dreams—and what happens when she comes back for the holidays and rediscovers an old flame.”

Safe to say, I think “an old flame” solidifies the relationship between Dorothea and the speaker as a romantic one.

And finally, proving that the speaker of Dorothea is a woman and the song is, in fact, very gay:

ooh, you’rе a queen sellin’ dreams, sellin’ makeup and magazines/ooh, from you I’d buy anything

skipping the prom just to piss off your mom

Now, I’m not saying that men can’t or shouldn’t wear makeup, but makeup is generally a female-coded thing… so if the speaker of “dorothea” is willing to buy the makeup Dorothea is selling, she is most likely a woman herself. And, of course, the skipping prom line. While any couple can skip prom, gay couples usually have a much better reason for doing so—in some high schools, students have been prevented from bringing same-sex partners. So. If “dorothea” is a love song about a woman… sung by a speaker who is also a woman… “dorothea” is gay. Case closed!

Now if you want to stick around for clownery, here comes “Tim McGraw.” I think that the “dorothea”/“tis the damn season” couplet is a grown-up version of “Tim McGraw” because the songs have several parallels. Both “dorothea” and “Tim McGraw” are named after people; all three songs focus on the wistful feelings that happen after high school romances come to an end; both relationships ended when one person left town for some reason.

And there are a number of lyrical parallels:

the stars in your eyes shined brighter in Tupelo (dorothea)

he said the way my blue eyes shined/put those Georgia stars to shame that night (Tim McGraw)

Apart from the obvious stars/eyes shining parallel, both songs reference specific locations in the American south.

hey, Dorothea, do you ever stop and think about me? (dorothea)

when you think Tim McGraw/I hope you think of me (Tim McGraw)

And finally:

time flies, messy as the mud on your truck tires (tis the damn season)

just a boy in a Chevy truck/that had a tendency of getting’ stuck/on backroads at night (Tim McGraw)

This is not to say that the love interest in Dorothea’s story is a boy, or that the love interest in “Tim McGraw” is actually a woman (although I have seen the faded blue jeans/little black dress discourse). But I like these parallels because I feel like evermore has given Taylor the opportunity to apply new maturity to some old concepts, and she’s done it beautifully. These three songs tell different versions of the same story—a breaking up and falling back together of high school sweethearts.

My Top 10 Favorite Episodes of “My Two Dads”

(Some spoilers ahead for a show from 1987.)

1. Joey’s Mother-in-Law

(Stefan’s Voice) This episode has EVERYTHING! It’s funny, it’s heartfelt, it tackles serious topics. And it’s the episode that cemented in my head that Joey and Michael are meant to be seen as a domestic couple. And this is not just with the title, but with the interactions and plot of this episode. Michael’s mother is a great character. She’s neurotic and initially dismissive of Joey and Michael “playing at being parents,” sure, but she doesn’t mean anything in malice as much as genuine concern. And she comes around by the end of the episode and even, 100% serious, calls Joey her “son-in-law.”

2. Pop, The Question

A sad but necessary episode where Joey and Michael are about to “divorce” and finally decide to take a blood test to find out which one of them is Nicole’s biological father. This decision is made against Nicole’s will, who firmly does not want to have to pick between Michael and Joey. Despite an initial fake-out, the episode actually ends with the audience/characters never knowing the truth, which I think was very big of the writers.

3. Kind of a Drag

Not the best episode, but absolutely the funniest episode. All the humor is pooled into the last 15 minutes, and features Michael dressing in drag as Joey’s pregnant “wife” named Felicia. With whom he has 10 children. All in the attempt to scare a toxic woman away from dating Joey (“Fellas, is it gay if-“). And Nicole is accidentally privy to this moment of Michael crossdressing, and her reaction had me in stitches. I’m completely confident that when Joey is laughing at “Felicia’s” script and behavior, it’s Evigan breaking character.

4. The Artful Dodger

The ending made me cry. Nicole puts off an art class assignment for an unknown reason, only for her dads and the audience to realize at the very end that she doesn’t have any artistic talent, and sees that as proof that she is not Joey’s daughter. Seeing Nicole standing there in the apartment, crying and saying “Joey, I can’t draw!” broke me. Of course they end the episode with the message that certain talents are not genetic, and Nicole’s lack of talent is not proof of anything. And of course, that Joey loves her no matter what.

5. A Story in Development

Possibly the best Judge/Nicole episode. Nicole wants to be as “developed” in breast growth as a girl in her class, who seems to be getting all the attention from the boys. After several failed attempts from her dads trying to counsel her on this (and a HILARIOUS scene where she and Shelby stuff their bras with tissue and the dads are trying so hard not to laugh) Judge finally steps in and explains that being the first girl to get breasts isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

6. In Her Dreams

On the night of her 14th birthday, Nicole dreams what her life might have been like if her mom married either Michael or Joey. This was the only appearance of Marcy Bradford in the series (TBH, I didn’t love the actress they picked. She looks nothing like Nicole and it’s very distracting.) and this is generally a very sweet and cute episode, with a lot of dream logic jokes I enjoyed. It also sneaks in a hilarious but somewhat dirty joke about an implied threesome between Marcy, Michael, and Joey.

7. Nicole’s Big Adventure

This was my episode where I was really and truly like “they don’t just love Nicole, they ADORE her.” Nicole sets out on a weeklong field-trip with her class to go camping, leaving Michael and Joey anxious wrecks. Though they try to have a “guys night” (playing poker with the gayest group of “straight” men I’ve ever seen), they end up getting a call from the camp that Nicole has broken her foot, and they drop everything to bring her home.

8. Sweet Sixteen, See Appendix

This episode flashes back and forth between Nicole in the hospital with appendicitis, and a few days prior where she’s trying to plead her case to spend her 16th birthday skiing with her friends instead of with her dads. The story is, overall, focused on the dads learning to let go and let Nicole be more independent. But, unlike “Nicole’s Big Adventure,” the episode also emphasizes how much Nicole still needs them. On top of that, it’s a genuinely cute episode of Michael and Joey fretting over their kid.

9. Say Goodnight, Gracie

Joey offers to babysit his girlfriend’s infant daughter, an offer which Michael staunchly disagrees with. Gracie, the baby, ends up crying all night and Michael gets stuck as the sole babysitter after Joey gets sick. Purely a self-indulgent love for this episode. I imagine that Gracie is Baby Nicole. And Michael is just adorable for how he fawns over her. The episode also makes a great argument in support of single-parents and is one of the slightly more feminist episodes of the series.

10. The Pilot/Soho’s By You

The first two episodes of the series really feel like one big episode, as they set up the dynamic for this unusual family. In the first episode, Joey and Michael “inherit” Nicole during the will reading of Marcy Bradford, then argue over who will raise her, and in the second episode they attempt to live separately as co-parents before Nicole literally guilt-trips them into living together. It’s a great start to a wonderful show.
