Part 1 of 3
Hello. I've been busy. But I'm once again reaching out to the dean sympathizers to finally see reason. Let's discuss climate change metaphors. Now, are we really gonna pretend that a show called "Supernatural" (as in 'above nature'), in which the main characters are literally hunters, isn't about destroying the environment? Because there are countless examples of this theme.
Who is at the helm of subjugating the planet? Everyone's favorite older brother, of course. It is dean's greatest desire to become the world's apex predator, supplanting other beings at the top of the food chain (those he deems as "monsters"), and inheriting the Earth as his own. Note: that is episode title of 15 x 20. Even the angels and G*d himself acknowledge the way dean disrupts the ecosystem or the 'natural order' as they say. In the world of Supernatural, hunters eliminate supposed threats, selfishly putting human power above the welfare of all. This parallels real-life hunters in America displacing wolves before efforts were made to restore them in Yosemite National Park. It's not a coincidence that he felt at home among other predators in Purgatory.
Part 2: Sam What is more intriguing and tolerable is the way Sam, and even cass react to dean’s megalomania. Although dean forces Sam and cass at his side into the life of hunting to achieve his goals, he narcissistically insists that Sam himself is a monster. He states this clearly a couple of times, but the brothers’ opposing food choices also exemplify that Sam is subhuman to a hunter like dean. Consider even the way his slobbish habits are contrasted to Sam in episodes such as Tall Tales, establishing Sam’s own relationship with food as clean”. Clean for the environment, I say. Sam, the show’s metaphorical climate warrior, does his best to eat a sustainable diet like other passive herbivores such as cows. The fact that dean calls it “rabbit food” is obvious proof that dean literally believes Sam is prey. It is no coincidence that the cattle industry largely contributes to greenhouse gasses, and dean loves eating burgers made of this beautiful herbivore. Part 3: cass In fact, the love of beef perfectly displays cass’ failure to emulate Sam’s environmentally friendly virtue, under dean’s grooming. Even though he states that it is the hunger of his vessel, Jimmy, this is a misleading detail in My Bloody Valentine. Because he is new to emotions, he is a vulnerable, blank canvas to dean as a corrupting influence. He infects cass with his desire to take the Earth as well as burgers. Conversely, dean’s gluttony is so large that it can’t be perceived and augmented by Famine. He is dead inside, and his rot will poison the Earth. Later, with a matching hunger, cass spirals in season six, eventually becoming the “new God”, literally consuming the souls of monsters to do so. This arc of cass eating the Leviathans in his hubris and exploding in the lake is yet another metaphor for overconsumption and pollution destroying the environment. Sam, his “monstrous” powers and autonomy stripped, and cass, mind and heart polluted, are powerless to stop dean’s terrorism on the world of Supernatural during the later seasons. It is only in the end when the Earth is free from dean and his brainwashed kitten cass, that Sam and the rest of world live on. This is why the finale is a clean, green victory! part 4: oops oh my god I totally forgot about cass being dismissed as "crazy" for taking a strong interest in animals and nature in season seven while processing his guilt for his actions in season six. the bees. arguing against animal testing for makeup on monkeys. etc. these references to the environmental destruction are really obvious in Supernatural sometimes.
Part 3 is my favorite.

Okay, the previous Star Trek poll wrapped up with a close but pretty obviously inevitable victory for the Uhura/Chapel kiss ... but while I'm in the TOS trash bin, another poll concept struck me. I'll add the full quotes/episode citations below, but I wanted the people's opinion:
1— "The Immunity Syndrome"
I've noticed that about your people, doctor. You find it easier to understand the death of one than the death of a million. You speak about the objective hardness of the Vulcan heart, yet how little room there seems to be in yours.
The context: in this episode, the Enterprise arrives in the area just in time to see, but not prevent, the deaths of 400 Vulcans on another Starfleet ship. Spock psychically experiences their deaths, and spends much of the episode quietly upset and grieving, while McCoy is just kind of a dick to him for 90% of the episode.
2— "The Galileo Seven"
MCCOY: Well, I can't say much for the circumstances, but at least it's your big chance. SPOCK: My big chance? For what, doctor? MCCOY: Command. Oh, I know you, Mr. Spock. You've never voiced it, but you've always thought that logic was the best basis on which to build command. Am I right? SPOCK: I am a logical man, doctor. MCCOY: It'll take more than logic to get us out of this. SPOCK: Perhaps, doctor, but I know of no better way to begin. I realize command does have its fascinations, even under circumstances such as these. But I neither enjoy the idea of command, nor am I frightened of it. It simply exists. And I will do whatever logically needs to be done. Excuse me.
The context: I've talked about how TOS is so often Spock vs. Microaggressions, but this episode is like... what if that were an entire episode and the bigots were really stressed, okay.
3— "The Naked Time"
My mother—I could never tell her I loved her.
An Earth woman, living on a planet where love, emotion, is bad taste.
I respected my father, our customs. I was ashamed of my Earth blood. Jim, when I feel friendship for you, I'm ashamed.
The context: a bunch of the crew contract a disease that causes their inhibitions to drop, bringing out repressed but strongly-felt emotions and/or desires. This means swashbuckling for Sulu, Riley fantasizing about ruling the ship as an Irish king, Kirk admitting to his feelings for Janice Rand that are eclipsed by his feelings for the Enterprise, etc. But Spock without inhibitions is just profoundly unhappy and, well, ashamed.
4— "The Corbomite Maneuver"
BAILEY: It's blocking the way! SPOCK: Quite unnecessary to raise your voice, Mr. Bailey. All engines stop. Sound the alert. [a little bit later] SPOCK: And when the captain arrives, he will expect a full report on— BAILEY [sharply]: The cube's range and position. I'll have it by then. Raising my voice back there doesn't mean I was scared or couldn't do my job. It means I happen to have a human thing called an adrenaline gland. SPOCK: It does sound most inconvenient, however. Have you considered having it removed? BAILEY: Very funny. SULU: You try to cross brains with Spock, he'll cut you to pieces every time.
5— "The Conscience of the King"
SPOCK: Apparently, he [Kodos] had his own theories of eugenics. MCCOY: Unfortunately, he wasn't the first. SPOCK: But he was certainly among the most ruthless, to decide arbitrarily who would survive and who would not, using his own personal standards, and then to implement his decision without mercy. Children watching their parents die. Whole families destroyed. Over four thousand people. They died quickly, without pain, but they died.
The context: this is the "Kirk is a genocide survivor" episode, in which Spock notices enough unusual behavior from Kirk to go investigating. He's horrified by what he finds, and horrified about the harm and danger to Kirk specifically, and repeatedly tries to convince McCoy of how bad the situation really is. He is also firmly on team "your memory isn't deceiving you, this guy is totally Kodos and you should launch him out the airlock."
6— "The Enemy Within"
Being split in two halves is no theory with me, doctor. I have a human half, you see, as well as an alien half, submerged, constantly at war with each other. Personal experience, doctor. I survive it because my intelligence wins over both, makes them live together. [To Kirk] Your intelligence would enable you to survive as well.
7— "Shore Leave"
SPOCK: Very well, captain. Something I did come to discuss. KIRK: Yes, Mister Spock, what is it? SPOCK: I picked this up from Dr. McCoy's log. We have a crewmember aboard who's showing signs of stress and fatigue. Reaction time down nine to twelve percent, associational reading norm minus three. KIRK: That's much too low a rating. SPOCK: He's becoming irritable and quarrelsome, yet he refuses to take rest and rehabilitation. Now, he has that right, but we've found— KIRK: A crewman's right ends where the safety of the ship begins. That man will go ashore on my orders. What's his name? SPOCK: James Kirk. Enjoy yourself, captain.
The context: Kirk is obviously exhausted and refusing to take shore leave with everyone else, despite McCoy trying to badger him into it. Spock manipulates him into it far more effectively, and is clearly smug about his success.
8— "The Squire of Gothos"
TRELANE: You do realize, don't you, that it's in deference to the captain that I brought you here? SPOCK: Affirmative. TRELANE: I don't know if I like your tone. It's most challenging. That's what you're doing, challenging me? SPOCK: I object to you. I object to intellect without discipline. I object to power without constructive purpose.
9— "A Taste of Armageddon"
SPOCK: Then the attack by Vendikar was theoretical. ANAN: Oh, no, quite real. An attack is mathematically launched. I lost my wife in the last attack. Our civilization lives. The people die, but our culture goes on. KIRK: You mean to tell me your people just walk into a disintegration machine when they're told to? ANAN: We have a high consciousness of duty, Captain. SPOCK: There is a certain scientific logic about it. ANAN: I'm glad you approve. SPOCK: I do not approve. I understand.
10— "Operation: Annihilate!"
KIRK: Sam. It is my brother. Was my brother. MCCOY: I'm sorry, Jim. The boy's unconscious, but he's still alive. KIRK: Peter? MCCOY: I'd better get the boy and his mother back to the ship. I can't do much for them down here. KIRK: Get ready to beam up. MCCOY: McCoy to Enterprise. Prepare to beam up party of four. SPOCK: Captain, I understand how you must— KIRK: Yes. Yes, Mr. Spock. You heard my sister-in-law say something about they being here. Your guess. SPOCK: Notice the ventilator, Captain.
Spock's approach to comfort tends to be figuring out some concrete or pragmatic assistance, or loyally defending someone, rather than trying to reach out in such a direct emotional way. Kirk (like Spock himself tends to be) can't really handle it and Spock immediately shifts to making himself useful throughout the episode, enduring excruciating pain, high danger, and blindness.

Me talking a lot
Episode 1, School Day Dilemmas, introduces the roster of characters from the local high school and whether or not they should join a school club for nerds. Other members are called Rodney, Jaybird, Aaron and James. They decide against it and the club is shut down. We get introduced to bit characters like some genuinely affable cheerleaders, a toxic club about celebrity gossip, some nerds, some jocks, some teachers, artsy goths.
Episode 2, No Spoilers! is about Jane spoiling a comic issue for Jerry and how everyone accidentally spoils information to each other through increasingly convoluted means.
Episode 3, The "Thing" From Another Fandom, is about James trying to join the group and failing after having a one day trial. He is promptly kicked out.
Episode 4, Escape From Joe's Fantasy World, is about Bill, Josh and Pete breaking into Joe's Fantasy World to rob it and getting themselves trapped inside. Jane and her girl gang are outside and will only let them out if they do what the girls want. Pete sings the theme song to The Hair Bear Club. Jerry is babysitting his baby cousins and shows off his paternal insticts he shockingly has.
Episode 5, One Man's Trash Is Another Geek's Treasure is about Pete leading the group to go dumpster diving behind Burger Moat to get collectable Fantastic Four trading cards that they will never trade.
Episode 6, The Marathon Men, is an adaption of the comic The Marathon Men.
Episode 7, Unstable Molecules, is an episode about a school science project about molecules where people work in pairs. Josh and Pete work on stealing supplies for a model while Bill and Jerry examine an unstable molecule under a microscope and achieve nothing because they think they're irradiated and are either going to become superheroes or die.
Episode 8, Project 101, is about Bill and Jerry having to go to detention after school on Friday to work on their uncompleted assignment surrounded by normies. Josh and Pete try to host a club meeting at Josh's house and we learn all about Naomi Levy and her odd ways.
Episode 9, Slumber Party Blowout, is about three sleepovers at the Dickey household. The newly divorced mother of Bill and Jane is bringing a man home for dinner...and maybe more. Jane has her girl gang over for a sleepover. Bill has the club over for a marathon of the Creepshow movies (and the Tales From The Darkside movie at Pete's insistence) for his birthday that his mother forgot. It goes horribly wrong for all three parties.
Episode 10, Fatal Attractions, is about Jerry befriending and having the tiniest of crushes on a girl named Agnes. Pete tries to convince her Jerry's horrible, Josh threatens her and Bill spreads rumours about her. She stops talking to Jerry and he is upset.
Episode 11, Nerds vs Geeks, is about a group of nerdy backgrounds characters who've been around all season calling themselves geeks in the leadup to homecoming. Jerry is on bad terms with the three after Agnes still. Pete, Josh and Bill use underhanded tactics to make the nerds as unappealing as possible. They eventually confront the nerds who say they did this to get dates. The Midwest Comix Collective told them it would work.
Episode 12, Battle Of The Clubs. Homecoming night and Bill, Josh and Pete confront Aaron, James, Jaybird and Rodney. They argue and exchange side eyes. Jerry tries to talk to Agnes but she refuses to. He decides to just go home. A girl called Mandi offers to walk him home. They leave just before a massive fight breaks out between both clubs. Bodies are thrown, people are knocked over, lighting fixtures are damaged. Bill is trapped between bleachers and sets the building on fire with Pete's lighter. Zoom in on a cheerleader's mouth as she screams. Darkness. Eyes opening. We cut between POV shots of each of the seven being scolded for what they did. Bill ignores his mother to watch TV instead.
The end :)

ok now that i've had some time to think on it, i deeply wish circumstances were different and that the studio had the resources to make a third season bc while i do think s2 fucks i also understand when people say it had pacing issues. act 2 and 3 were dense and had so much going on it was hard to understand and keep up, like gun to my head rn i could not tell you what the arcane is or why it's so scary that they are/it is waking up
#arcane#arcane spoilers#vi and jinx's story faltered a bit at the end after isha's death#there are just some things here and there we were told happened but i wish we got to see it#like the direct aftermath of isha's death when jinx gave herself up or what ekko said to jinx to make her join him#at some point i completely lost the plot on viktor's motivations#if not another season then 1-3 more episodes

Throwing out there an idea for post-canon Dean jobs: physical therapist.
It's hands-on, but not necessarily straight forward. It uses problem solving skills too, plus creativity and pattern-recognition to connect different potential symptoms and treatments. Dean's great at this kind of stuff, and demonstrates it a lot when he hunts.
It requires people skills, and working with lots of different populations with different backgrounds. This is also a skill Dean is great at, but in this case it wouldnt be part of a lie for a case but a way to make genuine connections.
And, it's a way to make a noticeable difference in people's lives - and give people a way to move forward after injuries or accidents. He could help hunters too! It seems cathartic for Dean to be able to still feel like he's doing good for the world (and the hunting community) without having to go on hunts himself. It's not just surviving day-to-day anymore, but learning to live through things to see a future.
#based on his previous jobs#1. mechanic (very hands on)#2. when he was part of the film crew in that s2 episode and rlly enjoyed being part of a team and talking to people#3. hunting - making a difference. helping people.#idk i feel like it combines these aspects pretty well and i havent seen anyone mention it yet#and i like it :) he doesnt have to hunt but he doesnt have to give up helping people either.. which is the aspect of the job that really#motivates him..#and its more of a sign that hunters dont have to do the whole 'die at 30' thing anymore#they can have communities (like the wayward sisters and tfw 2.0) and grow old... breaking the cycles..#having to actually recover from injuries instead of either dying or being forced straight into another apocalypse..#dean winchester#spn#supernatural#spn meta#my posts#spn season 15#spn post canon

Was randomly suggested a miraculous season 6 criticism and I have been plagued for hours now with visions of a rewrite. I’m going insane please help.
#okay so rewrite plot is essentially that season 1 is like the original in that it’s getting the characters and watcher/reader used to the#formula and the world. but it’s going to have a lot more focus on characters and relationships than the orignal and will also be setting up#future plot points. the finale tho would be a two-parter with a big confrontation with Hawkmoth at the end akin to origns episode 2 (worth#mentioning that Hawkmoth is going to be much more of a mystery bc I want him to be scarier so most of season 1 people only know of this#Hawkmoth who’s turning everyone into villains)#anyway yeah it’s going to have a scene at the end where Fu is watching the battle & its ending through a tv and he turns to Wayz (the kwami)#& is like “I think they’ve proved themselves by now don’t you?”. & then season 2 starts with what appears to be just a normal day when Fu#pulls ladybug aside & reveals all & she is now burdened w/knowledge. She asks if Chat Noir knows & Fu says he’s been trying but Chat Noir is#evasive & difficult to get in contact with. he implores ladybug to not talk to Chat Noir about this before he can speak to him#the Collector episode happens about midseason & it goes differently leading to Gabriel being more lenient about Adrien’s free time. this#gives Fu the opportunity to pull Adrien aside and give him a rundown so him and Mari are on an equal level in knowledge but they’re still#learning separately. then finale is a whole emotional argument between Char Noir & Ladybug that I won’t get into but it gets resolved even#if there’s still residual issues. season 3 things get big. Fu is trying to figure out who Hawkmoth is. Mari is stressed. Adrien’s happy-ish#plot happens & it ends up in Hawkmoth finding out that there’s another miraculous holder who’s on his case. the finale is an epic battle#the group (bee. fox. cat. bug) manage to corner hawkmoth into position for turtle to get the jump on him and then Mayura gets involved#but ya know no one knows about Mayura yet. so the group split w/bug and co. going to battle new enemy and cat stays behind with turtle to#watch Hawkmoth. except Mayura tackles Fu from behind & knocks him out stealing the miraculous. Cat tries to fight but the shield on Hawkmoth#it vanishes & Cat is now completely outmatched w/2 adults against 1. he’s getting the crap beaten out of him and Hawkmoth is kinda enjoying#it. Cat is running trying to get away using cataclysm but it doesn’t help much and Hawkmoth catches up & is about to deal a killing blow but#Mayura stops it with the turtle miraculous. she says that she didn’t decide to help him so he could kill teens & he either needs to stop now#or forget her as an ally. he chooses to retreat & Mayura leaves the turtle miraculous w/Cat who’s passed out. Bug finds him about to#transform back & instructs Bee & Fox to leave with their miraculouses to avoid identity reveals except Cat transforms back while Bug is#trying to carry him away. then angst ensues as season 4 starts & Adrien + Chat Noir has been missing for a while now & Bug has been so aggro#at Hawkmoth & co. & is kind of on a revenge thing. but also Fu got brain damage from the attack & can’t be guardian anymore & bc Cat is#still injured he can only pass it on to Bug who is now so insanely stressed that she feels like she’s gonna explode.#mlb rewrite#miraculous#mlb#miraculous rewrite#miraculous ladybug

WHY DID NOBODY TELL ME BURROWS END WASNT FREE
#I DIDNT TALK TO ANYONE ABOUT IT BUT STILL. SOMEONE SHOULDVE WARNED ME BEFORE I GOT COMPLETELY INVESTED#I know next to nothing abt dimension 20 I’m pretty sure I just saw a post abt burrows end specifically MONTHS ago and was like 👀👀👀#opened a tab with the first episode to watch later and promptly forgot about it#until last night! having a bad night and was like hrm what if I just watch smth#and I’ve been reading watership down recently!! finally got my own copy bc it was my favourite book when I was like NINE#so I am fully primed to fall in love with a story abt little animals rn and man#I am OBSESSED with this and also realising yeah I’m at a point where I could get very into tabletop rpgs now#what if. what if I just get dropout. what if I just do that. would that not be fun. I would like to see the stoats do stuff#i am so in love with Ava and her player and I understand so much more about brennan lee mulligan now. and VIOLA#viola may be my favourite character I’m obsessed with how she interacts with other characters.m#i NEED to know what’s up with thorn’s cult thing. and also thorn. what is going on there#hrrgrhehh the thing that’s holding me back is I’m allergic to subscriptions#impermanence. even though I know it’s fairly unlikely I’ll wanna watch it again any time soon I don’t like the idea that I’d have to like#in a couple years pay for it again or not be able to bc I can’t afford it even though I already paid for it once#I’m a books + cartridge games guy and it shows.#okay. I will chew on this. the price is not unreasonable and I have coincidentally also been looking at make some noise clips#it does not help that I basically never watch things but my favourite podcast is also ending within the next month (2 episodes left)#and this IS primarily audio so I could cook + watch mayhaps. and I’ve heard good things abt all other d20.#they have a 20% off first year deal on. annual would make me less stressed long term if I end up liking this bc cheaper + choice premade#and would also mean I can do it now and not feel bad abt wasting the first month bc I won’t be able to watch much for a few weeks#fuck it I’m allowed to make frivolous purchases sometimes I will simply swallow the subscription distaste#more stoats >:)#that aside all the players are incredible I’m pretty sure when this is done I’ll wanna watch other seasons just to see what else they do#okay go do the thing I believe in you you can spend money sometimes#luke.txt#update I downloaded the app. I am putting off the decision for another day now bc it’s 1:21am and I have not been thinking clearly <3

Pfff Jaskier, you don't believe it yourself that your relationship with Geralt is only platonic. Stop fooling yourself.
Nice abs btw. Joey Batey you are amazing!
Poor fake Ciri…
Visenna is death? Geralt is crying? His childhood story made me cry 😭
Also, Giancardi and Fabio Sachs. Another scene straight from the books!
Good boy Jaskier, telling Geralt that Redania wants Ciri. And he knows something about Radovid is fishy…
If I was Ciri I would have fled as well. Gods those mages are snobbish and arrogant.
So… Istredd is working for Nilfgaard? Why a, I not surprised?
Remember r last post when I was saying I ship Cahir and Gallatin? Well it sunk before it even started… rip.
Redania is madness but I like it…
Woah the Wild Hunt!!!
I repeat: Henry Cavill deserves an oscar. Liam ah s worth will never master Geralt as he did.

the entirety of BFDI so far is 16:10:39 (hours, minutes, seconds). assuming the average sleep time is 8 hours, then that's a little more than typical waking hours
#wheucto#wheucto speaks#binging the entirety of BFDI in one sitting (from BFDI 1a to TPOT 6) is. possible. but barely#unless you like. stay up a long time_ later on this is just. going to be impossible#that is if you want to stay healthy sleep schedule-wise#and so far we only have 6 TPOT episodes. considering we have 35 (i think) contestants_ 2 contestants eliminated#if that stays true until. uhhhh. let's say an avg of 3 members per team for merge (or first merge)#3 * 6 = 18#that's almost half of 35. so it would take 17 or 18 episodes to get there if. i'm right which is unlikely#now if 1 contestant is eliminated after 1st merge that would take 15 for final three 16 for final two#if the same stays true (until final four/two) then it'd be 7ish for final four/three or 8 for final two#17 + 7 + 1 for the smallest estimate. that's 25.#each episode is about 25 minutes (assuming trends stay the same) so it'd be 625 minutes more (or 10 hours 25 minutes)#that is_ assuming that 1. tpot doesn't get canceled 2. 1st merge will happen when teams have 3 contestants avg#we'll need to wait about... 3 to 5 years (if the show gets completed) to see how many episodes (and how long they are) there'll be#(since assuming each episode comes in a month + half times that by 25 for a little over 3 years as the lower estimate and 5 as just. a vibe#- based guess)#if 625 mins is correct then it'd be over 26 hours long also known as more than a day. so. binge-watching all of bfdi is probably impossible#- when it all gets completed (assuming there isnt ANOTHER season after tpot. and who knows?)

Demon Slayer dedicating an entire arc to have half a dozen main characters collectively trying to defeat an Upper Rank Six demon in one of the most hype and epic fights of all time in anime then following that by having one monotone kid casually defeating an Upper Rank Five demon by himself in just one episode by casually slicing his head in underwhelming scene is sure a choice, isn’t it?
#not to sound like a hater but Muichiro kinda ruined this season for me#and its not just because he wasted a potentially epic fight#but his character is just so meh and he took so many screen time#so far Genya and all the village people were more entertaining than him#Idk if this season will only have 11/12 episodes and I hope not#because I don't want Upper rank 4 to also be defeated in underwhelming manners#since we only have 3 eps left and one of them will undoubtedly be a flashback ep for the love Hashira#and one will be the epilogue#so we will only have 1 episode for the Demon#I hope he escapes and comes back another day lol#kmy

Ok so i saw a post mentioning how Spindlehorse was hiring animators again, and i thought "huh yknow im really curious what the turnover rate of animators is in this studio" because i mean its a genuine question considering how i swear theyre hiring new animators every other week
So then i checked IMDB...
Before i go on i wanna put some context because its kinda needed for what im about to say:
On IMDB there's a section of the cast and crew page labeled "Series Animation Department". This is the section meant primarily for animators and storyboarders among other jobs in the same vein.
Now. Can you guess how many animators/storyboarders Helluva Boss has gone through in less than 2 seasons?
444.
That is four hundred and forty-four individual credits, a majority of whom didn't stay for any longer than a few episodes. I have never in my life seen an animator turnover rate this skewed.
But i saw this and i went "well it cant be that bad right, what about other shows?" because admittedly i didnt know a lot about animation so for all i knew this was normal. So i went to the IMDB pages of other animated shows
RWBY: 164 credited animators over 9 seasons
Murder Drones: 11 Animators over 7 episodes
The Owl House: 88 Animators over 3 seasons
Amphibia: 73 over 3 seasons
Steven Universe: 44 over 5 seasons
And just to be fair let's include Hazbin Hotel, which had 62 in 1 season
This means that for one reason or another Helluva Boss has gone through more animators in less than 2 seasons than shows that ran for SIGNIFICANTLY longer go through in their entire lifespan by several times and that astounds me

*deep breath* Okay. Here we go.
I don't think the Netflix Avatar show likes women very much. It's a great show for fans of Aang, Sokka, Zuko, and Iroh specifically. All four of those characters get a ton of great material. In fact, it's super great for Sokka stans, because the show takes him ultra-seriously and can't go five minutes without one character or another (usually a woman) praising him.
But the way it handles its female cast is troublesome.
Katara
So, all three of the main trio got some changes made to their stories. They changed Aang's story so that he wasn't running away from his responsibilities; He was just clearing his head and somehow accidentallied himself into a tsunami. Whoopsy-dooodle. Aang did nothing wrong.
They changed Sokka's story so that him being a leader of his people and a great guardian warrior is treated with complete seriousness. Multiple times, characters stop to talk about how brave and noble Sokka is for taking on such an intense responsibility, and tell him to his face what a great warrior and a wonderful leader he is. Also his misogyny is erased.
And they changed Katara's story so that she directly got her mom killed because she sucks at waterbending.
Katara tries to waterbend to attack the Fire Nation soldier but couldn't manage it, provoking the soldier to start actively searching for her and forcing her mom to fake a waterbending attack and draw his fire. They changed Katara's story so that her bad decision making fucking got her mom killed.
This is treated with the same level of severity as "Sokka was bullied by mean kids and also his dad doesn't think he's good enough to be a leader."
"I hoped Sokka would do better but not everyone is meant to have people's lives in their hands," Sokka's dad says of him.
Yeah, you're right, that's totally comparable to watching your mom get barbecued because you tried to waterbend in a situation you shouldn't have and then failed.
In fact, they give Sokka's greatest trauma more weight because it gets examined again with Yue next episode, while Katara actively getting her mom killed isn't brought up again at all. We get traumatized glimpses of it throughout the season leading up to the reveal, but after this scene in episode 5, it never comes up again.
But to be fair, Katara was a child. An event this significant would surely have motivated her, driving her to become the great waterbender she is now, right?
No! Katara sucks at waterbending and needs men who aren't even waterbenders to teach her how to waterbend. She requires instruction from Aang in episode 1 to learn how to waterbend, then from Jet in episode 3 to learn how to waterbend better.
And unlike the show, her relationship with Aang isn't a give-and-take; Katara doesn't teach Aang a single goddamn thing. He never learns to waterbend. She is a strictly a pupil throughout the whole season. Though she at least gets officially labeled a master in episode 8, so there's that.
In any case, the whole traumatic memory thing isn't even the only time she's directly compared with Sokka. Episodes 3 and 4 see Katara and Sokka bicker over whose morally dubious side character is better. Sokka likes the Mechanist and Katara likes Jet.
Ultimately, Katara is forced to eat crow when Jet turns out to be the worst, while Sokka is vindicated when the Mechanist sees the error of his ways and reforms. But not before two separate arguments where Sokka calls Katara childish and accuses her of acting like a little girl.
Arguments ultimately resolved when Katara apologizes to Sokka for not adequately respecting his very serious and ultra important role as village protector and leader. Gives him a whole speech about how great and glorious he is. And Sokka... appreciates Katara learning to respect him properly, I guess, because he never offers any similar sentiments back to her.
The show just... They need you to know how important Sokka is, okay? It's very important that you respect Sokka.
Suki
Suki suffers tremendously from that whole "Sokka's misogyny was removed" thing. Y'know, because they need something else to do with that episode. The show is deeply aware that Suki is Sokka's love interest, so they just do that right off the bat. Suki falls madly in love with him from the moment they meet, and spends the entire episode making goo-goo eyes and trying to get him to Notice Me Senpai.
They still do the "Suki Trains Sokka" stuff. But Sokka is a serious, dignified manly man worthy of the deepest respect now, so of course they don't make him wear the Kyoshi uniform. Instead, the main purpose of his training is to allow them to flirt some more. It's less martial arts training and more an excuse to grope each other and near-kiss.
Suki's just a waifu now. She still fights real good, but all of the stuff that made her relationship with Sokka interesting has been erased.
Yue
Yue, similarly, leaps straight to shipping from the word go. They write out her fiance, Hahn, by having Yue briefly meet Sokka earlier in the season. She spends one minute talking to him in the Spirit World about Spirit World lore; In that time, she falls so desperately, madly, unfathomably in love with him that she breaks off her marriage to Hahn and devotes herself to waiting for him to one day come to her.
"Never have I known such joys as that time you let me explain the spirit bear Hei Bei to you. Truly, we are destined to be together for life."
Like with Suki, they go out of their way to have Yue and Sokka already be a ship from the word 'go' so they don't have to spend time developing any kind of meaningful attraction.
They just. They really want you to know that Sokka is the manliest and most desirable man ever to walk this earth. It is very important that you understand how great he is. Women hurl themselves into his arms with zero effort whatsoever, because he's just so goddamn irresistible.
Fortunately, Hahn is super okay with this turn of events. He's the most chill guy ever, he gets along perfectly well with Sokka, and he completely supports Yue's right to dump him! In the famously misogynistic Northern Water Tribe, no less! What a swell guy. Aren't men swell?
June
June gets hit with that "rewritten as hollow waifu" stick too, but her eyes are set on Iroh. They rewrote June to be super attracted and flirty towards the man who was her unwanted sexual harasser in the source material. So that's fun.
Also, she barely does anything. Zuko hires her to find Aang, she succeeds, and then she fucks right off out of the show - But she manages to find time to express how unbelievably sexy Iroh is twice during that time.
She seriously just dropped into the show to flirt with Iroh and leave. She is unbelievably inconsequential.
Kyoshi
And then there's Kyoshi. They really want you to hate Kyoshi. She's constantly shot from below, as if looking down on Aang and the audience. Her voice takes on a demonic echoing reverb at one point as she's screaming at Aang that "THE AVATAR MUST BE A MERCILESS WARRIOR!!!"
She despises Aang, calling him a coward for running away from his responsibilities - Which, I remind you, is no longer a plot point because they unwrote that flaw from his character. So she's just a complete and utter asshole, shot from the asshole angle, yelling violently at him with asshole sound effects. They want you to despise this woman.
Azula
Awkwardly, they do not seem to want you to despise Azula.
There's a lot to be said for how Ozai treats Azula in the original show. The way the favoritism he shows her is every bit as cruel and manipulative as the unfavoritism that he shows Zuko. Ozai does not love Azula. He loves the reflection of himself he sees in her eyes, and his encouragement urges her to polish herself to ensure his reflection always shines through.
This is not that. The show instead erases the favoritism entirely. Ozai doesn't really care one way or another about either of his kids. He plays them against each other, bragging openly to Azula about how great Zuko is and unpleasably writing Azula off as weak and useless.
They've rewritten the dynamic between abusive father and his two abused kids in order to take Azula's pride away. Reimagining her from a gifted prodigy who excels at imitating the toxic behaviors of a father who doesn't truly care for her, to a put-upon overachiever tearing herself in knots to live up to the standards of her unpleasable father.
This results in a truly wild portrayal of Azula as insecure and jealous of Ozai's seemingly love for Zuko. Here, she is simply a browbeaten child constantly complaining to her friends about how mean her father is and conspiring to get one up over Daddy's Golden Child Zuko.
Which she fails at, because she backs Zhao. Zuko deftly defeats her without even realizing they're in competition.
Conclusion
The season ends well for some of these women. It ends promising that maybe we'll see Katara teaching Aang some day. It ends with Zhao bragging that Ozai just used Zuko to train Azula so maybe we'll see the more confident and misguidedly proud Azula some day. Yue becomes the moon like she's supposed to. June's still out there so maybe she'll get to do something again some day.
Katara gets to fight Pakku and lose, but she looks pretty cool. She gets to fight Zuko and lose, but she looks pretty cool. Azula learns to lightningbend because she's just so mad about Ozai's contempt for her and favoritism for Zuko, which isn't how you lightningbend.
But promises of future content fall flat when the content that exists is so underwhelming. This season made its feelings on these characters pretty evident, and it's unwise to expect better material from creators who've disappointed you with the material they already made.
The women of Netflix Avatar simply do not get to shine, outside of superficial moments like the "Women of Northern Water Tribe demand the right to fight and then fuck off and don't do anything for the entire rest of the episode" bit.
"In the midst of battle, we demand that you stop being sexist and give us permission to fight! This is a way better idea than convincing you to teach us to fight before the battle begins."
The characters of this show feel as if they've been reimagined to glorify the boys at the expense of the girls. The boys are treated with a great amount of care. They're dignified and made important movers of the plot, with their rough edges sanded off. While the girls are molded around them.

Okay, but all of this.
I ran out of room in the tags 😅, so I’m putting this here: One thing I wanted to touch on is the Ahsoka thing. The treatment of Ahsoka’s “death” at the end of season two of Rebels didn’t strike me as odd when I was watching through the first time as that show was coming out, because I wasn’t super attached to Ahsoka at the time, but, looking back, it’s weird. Ahsoka goes out in this huge self-sacrifice, we don’t see her die but they sure imply she dies off screen, there’s a little thing you see at the end that may or may not be her or her ghost, Ezra’s devastated, we get sad looks from Rex, a sort of funeral march version of her theme, the season ends, and then…nothing.
Ahsoka doesn’t get a funeral. The only person who gets close to saying she died is Tarkin (“Now that Vader has eliminated the Rebel’s Jedi leadership”). She hardly ever comes up, and when she does it’s usually in a, “We could have asked Ahsoka about this Jedi thing,” capacity. Rex, her oldest friend, doesn’t talk about her. Her death doesn’t motivate anyone—in fact, almost all of the conflict in the front half of the season is driven by the other things that happened in the season two finale, Kanan’s blinding and Ezra falling in with Maul—except maybe as subtext. We don’t even know for sure that everyone believes Ahsoka is dead; there’s even one moment that kind of indicates Ezra’s holding out hope that she’s not.
The show basically ignores the big Ahsoka-death shaped elephant in the room until two seconds before Ezra is pulling a very alive Ahsoka into the world between worlds. And contrasting that with the other important deaths in the series, mainly Kanan, and then Mira and Ephraim Bridger, where they actually go out of their way to hammer home how dead they are, make the deaths integral pieces of the plot, include entire episodes of processing, and do the work necessary to allow the audience and the characters to move on, it ends up being obvious that Ahsoka was never actually meant to be dead at all. She’s MIA until she comes back and the show treats her like she’s MIA, not like she’s dead.
And the reason I keep coming back to Ahsoka on this is that despite being the implausible resurrection franchise, the list of main Star Wars characters with planned fake out deaths which fake out the audience in addition to the characters is pretty short, and they all kind of fit this pattern. (For a truncated example, check out KB in Skeleton Crew. We get Captain Wrong dead certain she’s going to die before she even crashes, KB doing her best to fix things and find a way out while her moms and her friends say she can do it, horrified reactions when she crashes, aaaaand then twenty seconds later the story completely forgets about KB and how she just “died” until about ten minutes later when the kids are like, “Oh! KB!” and they rush off to find her alive).
To me one of the biggest pieces of evidence that Tech is alive and planned to come back in a future installment is that, were I to be trying to write a fake out death, I cannot think of anything else I could add short of literally showing him alive (at which point it's no longer a fake out.)
Give extensive development to his ability to rapidly think his way out of anything and stay calm in stressful situations? Check, we have Faster showing that he can make these plans in seconds while in the middle of driving and he actually says outright that the second one is a skill of his.
Give survival foreshadowing? Check, just check out the extremely blatant hold on him after Romar's "I'm a survivor" line. And again in Faster - it'd actually be an excellent place to put some foreshadowing of his possible death, have him win but in a way that causes a crash or something of that nature, making it so that his gamble worked but was a close call, rather than an easy survival for him. Instead we get others doubting Tech could survive but he not only does, but he does it easily. We have lines from Phee implying that there's more to come - her first line, better late than dead, is one that is an odd intro to her as a character but works perfectly if taken as foreshadowing for later. And her oddly specific 'don't go running off with any pirates or smugglers' in their last scene together is another one where it just feels primed for a comeback later on. His final conversation with Saw also is an interesting aspect here - Saw is the one that is leaning hard on 'sacrifice is necessary for the greater good' while Tech tells him to work smarter and take your enemy down from within. If you're going to have a character sacrifice himself, why put him at odds with the concept of sacrifice immediately before? There are just a lot of pieces that make the most sense if they're foreshadowing something to come with him.
Open plots that aren't yet resolved? Check on multiple angles. He has Phee of course - and they could have resolved that by either giving more closure in their last talk together or by having more of Phee in season 3, allowing her even one scene to talk with Omega about moving past something that she will never get closure on. This leaves their dynamic hanging wide open, but not in a way that uses the lack of closure for plot development. They also introduce a theme of culture and memory with him, which isn't allowed to go anywhere prior to him dropping into the mists and isn't developed in season 3 in his absence, where nothing is done in his memory and his goggles being placed in the Archium isn't even about remembering him it's about Omega not wanting to leave Pabu behind. AND, going back to Faster yet again, Cid drops that she owes him one, which hasn't come back. Cid is still out there, and that favor could still be called in if Tech comes back, otherwise it's an empty line that doesn't connect to anything. All of these were opened in season 2, so they're not just leftovers from changed plots.
Ambiguous method of death? VERY Check. Falls are one of the classic fakeout death methods because as long as we don't see the results anything could have happened between the moment we lose sight of Tech and when he would have impacted the ground. Did he manage to get on top of the rail car and use it to break his fall? Did he manage to find an alternate landing place and use wind resistance to angle himself towards a softer landing? Is the armor protecting his head and torso shock resistant enough to allow for survival? Could be any of those or more, we don't know because we don't see it. TBB also puts a lot of effort into making sure you know falls aren't that fatal. Here's a great post from @heyclickadee going into the WIDE variety of falls that would have logically been fatal but that are wriggled out of through the series. They could have given him some kind of injury that makes it less likely he'd survive, but nope despite being blown off the railing he's totally fine and able to maneuver out of it. He even flips into the skydiver's position before we lose track of him, which is the first thing you're supposed to do if you find yourself in freefall.
No body? VERY check. They picked a method of death that lets them not show a body, and then they go out of their way to make sure no one can look for a body. Omega's hurt so they can't go back and look for him. She passes out in front of a body but it's not his. Hemlock claims all he found is goggles in a moment where he has every reason to lie to them. They could have had Hemlock recover the body and show it under a sheet in his lab. Omega passes out in front of a body, that could easily have been made to be Tech to drive home that he's gone. There's a lot of options there! They took none of them.
Nobody ever gives him a funeral or has a mourning scene outside of the initial shock moment? Check. And, in fact, the only time he's even referred to as dead by anyone it comes from the mouth of Crosshair, the guy that's in this show primarily to be wrong about things. Every other time he's brought up, it's a moment of sadness and moving on. This is an easy fake out trope, because it allows the grief to linger without taking up a ton of screentime for something you're ultimately going to reverse. (See: Ahsoka in Rebels)
If I wanted to add to this, if I wanted to make it MORE clear that he was coming back without just saying so in words or literally showing him alive, I don't know what could be added. Front to back it's fully loaded with everything that goes into a fake death. And nothing that typically signals a real death. You can't rely on real life statistics for long falls because it's not real life, it's fiction. And by all fictional standards, Tech never died and it's just a matter of when and where they'll reveal him. (I'm still putting tentative money on it being sometime between the ending shot of the tree and the epilogue, to justify why they pulled his goggles out of the Archium rather than leaving them there as a memorial.)
#the bad batch#tech lives#tech actually lives#aaaaaaallllll of this#and the thing is#I don’t think this is a situation where they were planning on bringing him back#and then either fumbled or ditched it at the last second#I really think that we just ended up with a story being split across two shows#maybe three is you consider TCW season seven the start of the bad batch’s story#for one reason or another (well probably never know)#and that a Tech return wasn’t abandoned it just didn’t happen yet#because okay let’s say that hypothetically you find out you’re losing a season partway through writing the one#that’s going to end up being your last#you don’t keep the buildup and scrap the ending you were going for and replace it with Rampart’s comedy hour and the unmarketable force kid#you cut everything you can to get to that ending no matter how rushed it has to be#you don’t STALL FOR TIME#which is frankly what most of the season is doing#and if you change your mind on how you want to end things you cut the buildup from earlier in the season and rework the end#to resolve more than one thing#but if you’re just not done telling the story?#then you keep the build up because it will eventually pay off#you fill in time#you don’t resolve anything connected to the stuff you’re not done with yet#like I genuinely think that what we’re looking at here is TBB being stuck in the same position as the ESB#an absolutely fantastic piece of work which also fundamentally can’t stand on its own#not because of MCU style crossover issues but instead because it’s one chapter in a continuous narrative#and needs the ending and/or beginning chapters to prop it up#like if they actually dropped a Tech return easiest thing to do would have been to stick a body in episode 1 of season 3#delete the scene at the end of extraction where CX-2 crawls out alive and make the next guy CX-3#and bring in DBB for half an hour to record generic lines for the Pabu invasion
