I don't know if it counts but #hungarian art contains posts about pieces of famous Hungarian artists (e.x. József Rippl-Rónai, Victor Vasarely)
The "Americanization of the global internet" post and slow deterioration of local native culture gave me an idea: many users don't even know there is native language communities on this website, so if you know of a regional group/"subculture" on Tumblr, reblog/comment with the tags they use so people can find them and connect with other folks from their countries or speakers of a language they'd like to learn
I will try to update this post with every new addition to hopefully make a comprehensive list of Tumblr regional communities
Edit July 29th: the post has reached a point where Tumblr won't let me add any more links, so from now on all tags are plain text to make it fair

That TCU post…that is truly one of, if not the greatest thing I’ve ever seen come out of this fandom. I tried my own hand a while back at writing “the dsmp but taken seriously”; gave it a name and a playlist but didn’t really write much before I went back to my other projects. If you ever have the motivation to do more with that outline I’d be honored to be a co-writer or help out in any way, or if you want you could just use my title as a name for the series: A Ballad of Broken Dreams.
holy crap op this is so sweet. Thank you so much. I’m… wow ok. That. Wow. Thank you. That’s legitimately so kind and I’m so glad you enjoyed it XD. Id also Love to see your playlist and your thoughts behind the songs if you’re down?! That sounds awesome :D
funnily enough, I’ve had a drafted outline for this heccin thing running around in my head since the Butcher Army arc. Right around when SAD-ist dropped her animatic, I simultaneously realized ‘oh wow, I Adore this concept’ and ‘oh wow, I Highly doubt the CCs are gonna manage to do this the way I’d want to see it’ and lo and behold: I was correct. So painfully correct. (There were also People Involved whom I had Really Bad Feelings About from very early on that, sure enough, turned out to be exactly what i thought they were, rip) So the Emduo prequels, Icarus heccin Dying, and the end of Axe of Peace have been around for Ages.
I’d honestly love to do more with this concept, (i am designing movie posters as we speak) but due to Chronic Illness Pog I’m in a rather unstable financial situation? And don’t have a ton of free time for art. Any big projects are gonna take a While, or id need to find a way to use it or something adjacent to fund, y’know, Rent. That being said, I’m definitely writing the emduo prequels, both as movie scripts and as novels, as those are the films focused on, yknow, My Bois. I also think it’d be hilarious to release the novels and then the scripts and watch people Loose Their Minds over the ‘inaccurate adaptation >>:(‘
I’d absolutely love to work with other people in the fandom on this stuff, though I’ve never been the best at directly co-writing (my writing method and style is painfully specific (ie needlessly poetic) and I’m very autistic: I don’t like it when people touch that Specific Thing) but literally anything else? Im open ears. I love collabs.
and finally, I adore your name for the series, (excellent word choice there /srs, it fits perfectly with the symbolism of the whole story) and I think it works really Really well for the actual DSMP, but if I’m entirely honest… I’m not sure it fits the TCU? Like genuinely I’m so grateful for the suggestion, I love when people offer ideas and bounce things around like that. But one of the main things I tried to do with this concept was work out how the story could actually end Well. A deep-seated belief in the good-but-fallen nature of man, the importance of hope, and the inevitability of redemption kinda comes part and parcel with the whole Being-A-Christian Thing (if it doesn’t, you’re missing the Whole Point Of The Bible) and while the actual DSMP may have ended in broken dreams… this doesn’t. That was my first thought when writing that outline: This Is Going To End Well. Not for wish-fulfillment reasons, not because I’m naive or I don’t like bad endings, but because fundamentally, everything sad is a lie, and if the story has ended in tragedy, it hasn’t ended yet.
If I had to pick a series name now, I’m not sure what I’d pick. A part of me balks at referencing anything popularized by Our Local Redacted, but ‘unfinished symphony’ wasn’t his in the first place, it was from Hamilton. “The Finished Symphony” has a cool ring to it? I dunno. If anyone else has ideas please feel free to toss them in here aight, I’m not settling on anything for a While.
Anyways, thanks for Ted talking with me, drink water 💜

okay so I know I said I’d have a post for Monday but stuff happened (nothing bad don’t worry) so this is late and also not what I had planned. but it’s something at least while I’m working on drawing and trying to actually finish a drawing for once in my life
anyways without further ado: more Voltron dragon prince AU shenanigans because that is still very much a thing that I want to do and am going to at least have some “official” art done for at some point in the year.
I only have an idea for Shiro’s design right now, but I have so much more to talk about in this post.
Tumblr media
Shiro doesn’t really have a direct parallel to anyone in the dragon prince, but he’s still important (obviously) and he still goes missing. I can’t really say too much about him because of story and plot reasons but there is gonna be Cool Stuff happening. I decided to make him a moon shadow elf because it makes the most sense, and also I just thought he would look cool as one. He’s still engaged to Adam, and he still goes missing with Sam and Matt Holt.
That’s all I can say about Shiro for now, but I still have other characters to talk about.
Adam is going to be playing an active role in this because I want him to and also he won’t fucking die because I think he should live. As a treat.
In this AU, Adam is human. A huge part of his whole deal is that he will be looking for a Shiro and Keith alone because they’re the two most important people in his life and he wants to find them.
Also, Adam and Shiro’s relationship is secret, only Keith knows that they’re together and that’s a huge motivation as to why Adam goes searching for them alone since he’s kinda trapped since he can’t exactly go out and get help finding Shiro and Keith. Anyways, that’s enough about those two, let’s get on to everyone else I’m talking about today
I’m just going to make a quick bullet point list of characters I don’t have much to say on in this post but I still wanna say what their deal is in the AU:
Coran is going to be Opeli (the like, advisor in TDP). He’s the royal adviser, but he also helped raised Lance and Allura. I don’t really have much to say about him other than he will still very much be himself and I love him
Matt is a scholar or something of that type along with his father, and they meet Shiro while doing research and end up befriending him (thank you Aeon for this suggestion your brain is great)
Romelle is going to be the equivalent of Ellis (the kid with the wolf). Also trans Romelle because I am a trans Romelle truther
Veronica is going to be this AUs Amaya but not going to be exactly like her (also, please let me know if you guys think that I should make Veronica deaf like Amaya since I would like having a deaf character in this but idk if it should be her or another side character that would most likely be an OC)
Krolia is going to be missing/MIA
The BoM are going to be the moonshadow elf assassins, but without the whole knowledge or death deal since. I just don’t want them to have that and it’s my AU I get to do what I want
Honerva is dead lol
Zarkon will be Viren
Ezor, Zethrid, Narti and Axca are still Lotor’s Lesbians and I have Several Ideas for them
I still have a lot that I wanna do, like learn how to draw dragons because Whoops I made an AU that has dragons and a lot of them but I don’t know how to draw them, and I have a lot to talk about when it comes to certain decisions I made for this, like Zarkon and Honerva and some things I have in mind for them. This is probably going to be a project that will take a long time to even officially get started because I don’t know how to write but I so desperately want to tell the story I have in mind and have it be enjoyable.
I’ll make another post soon with more in-depth descriptions and ideas for Zarkon, along with something I like to call the “kill-die scale” and also some ideas I am still struggling with
Also as always, thank you to @deuxaeonn for the help, your brain is so good and ik this hasn’t been worked on for a while but still lmao

hi!! ive loved keeping up with your writing for the past few weeks, i always look forward to the email telling me something new ❤️ im not on tumblr as much, but I had another question! you don't have to answer if you don't wish to, but I was curious as to something; marco, actually. you write about him a lot, throughout your works and asks. I guess I wanted to know a few things, specifically why- is he your favorite one piece character, or just someone you enjoy writing? I love seeing how you characterize him, and honestly, since im only on marineford (a few episodes away from, well.. you know.), I haven't seen much of him. whenever he is onscreen, though, I see the man you write him as, haha! im having trouble separating the hannabarbera marco from canon, but im sure they're close with how excellently you characterize people. so, why Marco? what about him do you like, and is he your favorite character in one piece? or anything else you'd wanna explain about your opinions on him! im all ears!! 👂❤️
This was such a kind ask @celine-zzz!! Thank you for such wonderful compliments!! I really really appreciate it. There are a lot of amazing Marco writers in the OP fandom, I'm not sure I'm closer than anyone else. Don't worry about Marineford!! Come live in Delusion with me.
The funny thing is, Marco isn't my favorite OP character. He's up there, for sure, but he's not my #1 (Ace probably is, maybe Usopp). I would say he's in my top 5? I do really enjoy writing him though. I thought about this for a while, I think it's a few things.
I think I relate to him in the sense of being responsible for a circus when you're the one who has to keep things together. Marco's the Mom Friend, and I can relate to that. He's keeping Ace from jumping into the water on a dare, he's making sure Pops isn't drinking, he's watching to make sure the patients in the infirmary are OK, everyone depends on him, and he's trying to get all this shit done on three hours of sleep.
I like to annoy him. Just like his brothers, I think it's funny to annoy the calm, collected Marco. So I put him in situations I think he'd be irritated by, basically. Or situations he would normally avoid. I wanna wind him up and watch him snap like a rubber band.
There's something about his personality that lends itself to artistic interpretation. Marco is intensely loyal, strong (physically, emotionally), and smart. That combination can be interpreted in a lot of ways and I think it's fun to explore. How deep does his loyalty go? Would he cross personal boundaries for those he loves? Is he actually kind and selfless?
I actually like writing a lot of OP characters, but I've mostly published my WBP fics. If you ever have a suggestion / ask, please feel free! I can't promise I'll write them all, but I love seeing them. I'm writing some Doflamingo, Benn Beckman, Croc, Buggy, lots of stuff, it all just takes time.
Thank you so much for this ask, it really brightened my day.

RESIDENT EVIL 4 REMAKE ROLEPLAY CALLOUT: REWRITTEN!
Hi I copy and pasted my last rp callout for Resident Evil 4, if you noticed, no you didn’t
Hi there! My name is Mae, pleasure to meet anyone who happens to come across this post- I am a young artist, hopping right back into Resident Evil 4 after the hype died down- yes, I joined last minute, I know… but I may or may have not gotten attached to a certain someone and am down horribly for- Major Krauser - AHEM. BUT ANYWAYS, I am looking for some people to rp with for the drama, romance and ships alike! I am dying to find fellow people who share my interests and are willing to hear me out on the concept ideas I made for Resident Evil 4! But nonetheless, let’s get right into it, ladies and gentlemen! :DD and yes, I rewrote my shit, new rules!
Tumblr media
So here are the rules
Lets start off with requirements and rules!
Self-inserts are welcome!
Have a semiliterate writing style, proper grammar, and use quotations marks.
I roleplay on discord, I will not be role playing anywhere else.
Do not try and convince me to do anything that goes against what I have as my personal rules… if you are a decent human being, I humbly ask of you to please respect my boundaries, and I’ll respect yours!
If you want to have an rp… please send me a writing sample of yours so I can get an understanding of how you write, and see if I wanna work with it. It’s not required! But highly preferred and appreciated!
No…
No Mary Sues or Gary Sues, please, it is literally not any fun if your OC is too OP and has no weaknesses, just no, I will point it out in the RP if it Happens.
No Incest or Sexual Assault themes in role plays, a hard no.
No smut. If there is to be a smut scene in an rp, there will be a time skip to after the scene, no during it, no nada, only before and after scenes, I will NOT be writing two of our characters doing the nasty baby making ritual. 😭
No… but…
No Smut, definitely not… but suggestive and flirtatious dialogue is allowed! If there are to be any sexual scenes to happen, there will be time skips.
No controlling my OCs! but I can understand describing things like rain on their skin and certain pains they feel on their body.
No one sentence or very short replies… but I understand a small sentence or two, but don't do it the whole RP.
Do not keep the whole spotlight only to your character and their ship Partner, it is not Fair.
My writing style is Semi-literate, I prefer semi-literate writers over text talk writers unless it’s OCC.
Don’t what that is? Here!
Semi-Literate example:
The Moon goddess her lake from the bridge, sighing in contentment as she turned her attention to the moonlight reflecting the water’s surface with a soft gaze. "The best place to be for the silence is here..."
Text-talk example:
*Suijin looked at her confused* what do you mean? *She raised a brow*
Stuff I do and prefer!
I enjoy roleplaying fluff, romance, platonic relationships, action, and or comedic stuff!
I accept OC x Cannon, OC x OC and Cannon x Cannon ships! I also heavily encourage self-serts!
AUs are welcome! Though when I say AUs, I mean the fairly common ones like Yandere AU, Enemies to lovers AU, etc, etc. BUT! I’ll always be open to hearing out whatever you bring to the table!
Paragraphs? WHERE?!? Paragraphs are something I am absolutely down for, and I love them in roleplays! Especially when they are very detailed! I do em too and I would love it if someone else did as well!
If you know what Resident Evil 4 is all about… then you already know, violence and gore is definitely allowed, lol. Dark elements too, as long as they fit under the resident evil dark category.
Characters I’m able to play!
Leon S. Kennedy
Ashley Graham
Jack Krauser
Ramon Salazar
Luis Sierra
Bitores Mendez
Lord Saddler
Ada Wong
Ingrid Hunnigan
The Merchant
Characters I’d like you to play, if possible!
Jack Krauser (Top of my list because I’d very much would like to do an OC x Jack Krauser ship, lol)
Lord Saddler
Bitores Mendez
Ingrid Hunnigan
Ada Wong
The roles can be negotiated before an rp, we can switch stuff up depending n what you’d like to rp, I am flexible with who I play as! but I fear the only ship I will not be doing is Jack Krauser x Leon S Kennedy, I don’t know, it makes me uncomfortable as I see them with a Jim Hawkins and John Silver relationship, sorry! (I hope someone out there knows treasure planet to know what I mean.)
If you worry about getting responses back to me late- don’t get too worked up over it, we all have lives outside of the internet, and we just have to accept the fact that we can’t always be available! But do keep in mind that it’s good to let your friends online know that you may have to disappear for it bit, it also lets me know you’ll be busy for a bit! :D
If you want to RP with me, that’s great! I rp in Discord as it helps to organize everything, and if you’re interested and would like more questions- shoot me a dm, and I’ll answer when I can, thank you, and a have a wonderful day!

What's going on? 8/28/2023
Hey, Dofuwani Nation (and anyone else who has ended up here)!
So I'm done with dinner & diatribes, which is the first section of Black Iris. BI will have around 40 chapters-- I'm aiming to have the next part published sometime during October.
Here's what's happening now:
I'm going to be writing for the OP Big Bang and the OP Fight! OP BB will not be posted until Dec/Jan, but OP Fight will be ongoing until Oct 1! Some of the prompts may have to do with Dofuwani, but not all of them-- if you are subscribed to my account, and ONLY want to hear about Black Iris/Dofuwani stuff, I suggest you unsubscribe and subscribe specifically to the Black Iris series instead. (For those of you with social anxiety, don't worry-- I promise you won't upset me!)
Please feel free to interact with me here (or on my private) if you want!
Some brief and kind of irrelevant updates:
Thanks to everyone who voted in the OP shipping poll! We didn't win, but we got to 26% against NamVi, which isn't bad!!
I'm going to reblog a fic writer ask meme on here! If you want, you can send numbers in asks (anon is on), and I'll answer, and let you know how Black Iris is going! I'd love to keep interacting with you guys while I'm not working on that fic, but I totally understand if you don't want to! No pressure! ❤️
Just want to say thanks to everyone here-- I did a few people in the A/N, but it was just getting so long that I didn't have room for everyone. Thanks to rochiomaru, queenzoid07, marabout2772, soulessrobot, judas-had-a-crown, corazondrider, gay-nonbinary-axolotl, juliemckirk, theunluckyclover, nenehyuuchiha, inuchan3796, art-ismywilltolive and imasunhee for liking and/or reblogging chapter/master posts!
Thanks to spaceliquid, DarkSideOfTheSwamp, mousefly, Souless_Robot, kontol, 123_crowbar_solo, Orion_shi, RochiLee, Marabout_2772, moryofinwes, and Wenkeke for leaving comments on the fic! And thanks to everyone who left kudos there, too-- you've all made me very happy 💕
Thanks so much for all the kindness and support, everyone! I love sharing my work with you, and I hope I get to keep doing that in the future!

COSY CATASTROPHE: A 'slant' kind of cosiness, if cosy at all (?)
A sideways step here to look at B-movie Mister Right (2014).
Before we get into this at all, though: Trigger Warning - stop here if it's important to you to stay away from art where the creators are PROBLEMATIC because - this writer IS PROBLEMATIC.
So, yes, this is a movie, not a novel, and at first glance it's, what, some sort of eccentric crime caper slash romcom? Thing is, yes, it is that but/and with enough of a splash of urban fantasy to make it - something more. It's *almost* a very low-rent (anti) superhero flick.
I’m counting this one – it’s cosy for the MCs and catastrophic for almost anyone else. Morally ambivalent in a way that works for me.
An unconventional HEA that takes us into weird, unexpected, topsy-turvy but (to me) ruthlessly congruent with the characters’ moral positions and as such, deeply satisfying.
I was shocked but also really pleased. It felt like it played out towards an unconventional plot resolution that was true to the characters.
I've mentioned that the writer is problematic (e.g. Maddaus, 2019) and I know that this makes his work untouchable as well for many.
I've tried the George Saunders (2021) idea of looking at where the work is weakest, let's say because it reflects the writer's problematic attitudes - and then asking whether I could think of ways the work could be improved by improving the moral tone in those places.
Actually, I can, though, importantly:
I'm not saying that doing this would be enough to justify trying to persuade people who want nothing to do with the film to come back to it. That's their moral line and I understand and respect it.
I think the parts of the script where the women are alone together are noticeably weaker than the rest - not hard to imagine misogyny here.
Technically, arguably, these women *do* pass the Bechdel test, in that they talk on screen about things that are not The Guy (her time at college, the attack in the pet store by the crazy cat). BUT these conversations ARE really about The Guy – PLUS she’s horrible to her so-called friends – why would you stay friends w her?
IMO, this is blatantly a part of the writing that could be improved morally - and improved technically - and why not both at once? :)
By contrast, the shonky male MC is - IMO - really well-written all the way through and again it's not hard to imagine this character as an avatar for the writer himself, a "bad guy" who, as it turns out, "isn't".
I surmise that the male MC is well-written because at heart the writer believes that this character really is “NOT a bad guy”. Possibly he even thinks that the guy has an acceptable moral code?
Per the beats portrayed by the plot: i) he USED to be in CIA Black Ops (unacceptable actions but sanctioned by government direction), then ii) he just became a joe average hitman (i.e. serial killer i.e. BAD) but always somewhat compromised by guilt AND THEN iii) he walks away from the hitman business in general but carries on taking out the people who would like to hire him – vigilante justice. The stance is morally questionable but – we sort of get it. Finally, iv) it's suggested, if slightly under-examined, that now he’s trying to be a better person for the female MC and that he’s going to step down the killing to ONLY self-defence. (This continues since he’s still always on the run.)
The writing [with the significant exception of the female characters when they are not interacting with men] is pretty good to very good and the movie could be an example of where the art is better than the person who created it? The moral qu here of course is whether we are allowed to continue to enjoy the art regardless of who made it but/and also, perhaps more pertinently for Late Capitalism, whether we wish to advance our available $$ and attention to someone UGH.

Note
I have a surgeon character in a 25th century sci-fi setting (Star Trek), working on a spaceship, who is Cuban. She was born in Cuba and lived there until she was 7, then moved to California, and may or may not have moved back to Cuba before she became an adult.
Right now, she could be ""any other"" ethnicity/nationality, but she's supposed to be Cuban.
There's 400 years of fictional history (now - 2400s) that no one has come up with, and since history to some extent impacts culture, I feel like I'm at a loss. I found a specific city that has a yearly parade that's a big thing, but beyond that I don't have much.
She's also autistic, and most autistic characters are kids, white men, and sometimes white women. She doesn't fit the typical Hispanic/Latino stereotypes, but that "defaults" her to white in the common perception.
I hope this ask makes sense, thanks!
Original Cuban character in Star Trek fanfiction, Futurist Country
We don’t have active Cuban mods right now, so we are going to pass this along to Cuban and Cuban-diaspora followers, especially Cuban-American. Please respond in the notes.
How to write a country in the future
The good news is that you are writing science fiction, which is inherently speculative fiction -- so you get to speculate! Read some history and get some ideas.
Cuban/Cuban diaspora followers --
What are some things that would both make you happy or annoy you if a sci-fi writer had it happen in Cuban history over the next 400 years?
If someone didn’t really make up any future history and just had a character in space who grew up in Cuba without going into detail about what it was like, would that be all right with you or bug you?
(OP, hopefully you’ll get a multiplicity of answers because no group is a monolith.) History does impact culture -- for example, back in the early 2000’s my college roommate has suggested that Jean-Luc Picard (who is French) speaks with a British accent because England colonized France in the future -- but if the focus of your fanfiction is something else especially if it’s in space, personally I don’t think you have to make up an entire future history just to make her Cuban. Disclaimer that I am just one opinion and naturally I defer to Cuban/Cuban diaspora followers here.
Choice of backstory
Some information that you might find useful -- according to the 2010 census, around 1.26 million Cuban Americans live in Florida compared with 98,000 in California. That’s almost thirteen times as many. However, you can still write what you described, because 1. Those 98 thousand people exist and matter too and 2. Even if they didn’t, I understand that Starfleet Academy and other important Star Trek things are in California, so there’s always a way to write things that aren’t the most common combination in real life. (Anyone from anywhere has to go where Starfleet is; I understand that.) The lived experiences might be different for Cubans in California vs Florida because of the size of the community, so make sure you're specifically researching what it's like to be part of the Cuban disapora in California.
In other words: why California? Is it because of Starfleet? That’s fine. Is it because Cuban is a form of Latin and California has a large Latin population? That’s still okay, just be aware that the Cuban diaspora population isn’t what it is in Florida.
Defaulting to white because of not fitting stereotype
“She doesn't fit the typical Hispanic/Latino stereotypes, but that "defaults" her to white in the common perception.“
I am uncomfortable with this line. So you’re saying other characters perceive her as white because she doesn’t fit present-day, 21st century stereotypes of what it means to be a Latina? I’d change this detail if this were my story. Also this is Star Trek; far away in space they don’t seem to treat individual human ethnicities as crucial as the fact that we’re from Earth anyway. Why would they just not take her at face value as an Earth person who says she’s Latina?
If you are using Trek fanfic as a way to write out your own experiences of being hurtfully defaulted to white by others, by the way, that is obviously fine.

I LOVE your meta on how essek was the perfect asset and want to ask the follow-up question in your tags: how do you think it went down? The agreement between Essek and the Assembly? And I think the fandom was convinced Essek would be disposed of after the peace talks — how do you see his future if there was no intervention by the Mighty Nein in 97?
ruvi-muffin asked:
What are your specific thoughts abt how ludinus recruited essek??👀👀 oh Person who knows a surprising amount of spy stuff 🙏🙏🙏👀👀👀
Anonymous asked:
PLEASE share your specific thoughts about how Essek was recruited, I'm so intrigued!
Anonymous asked:
Hello yes i am very interested in these very specific thoughts about how Essek got recruited? All these things about how actual intelligence works/uses their assets/how that ties to Essek and the M9 is really interesting :D
Thank you all so much for asking me the specific question I wanted someone to ask. I had to write and rewrite this post a half-dozen times because I kept going off on tangents about other Cold War spy stories so trust me there’s plenty more where this came from.
For reference, my original post on what made Essek an ideal recruitment target and why the M9 were the ideal counter to it.
First off, this is all based on real-world intelligence ops and is only as relevant to the campaign as Matt Mercer cares to make it. Having said that *slams notebook on table* BUCKLE UP, KIDDOS.
There are two ways Essek may have been recruited: he approached the Assembly or the Assembly approached him. I think the Assembly approached him. Not to be too hard on the guy, but Essek said it himself: he’s kind of a coward. I can’t see him mustering up the nerve to take that first step. Plus his espionage seems to have focused specifically on the beacons rather than dunamancy as a whole; that sounds like the Assembly to me. The beacons specifically offer the prospect of immortality and the Cerberus mages are arrogant enough to assume they can figure out dunamancy themselves if they have a beacon in hand. There’s no way the Assembly haven’t been trying to beg, borrow, or steal those beacons for centuries. Essek may not have even been their first try - just the first that worked.
Chronologically, Essek would have popped up on either the Assembly or the Augen Trust’s radar quite early as I assume they keep tabs on all powerful Dynasty mages. As they followed his career, the Assembly would have ID’d Essek as a perfect target for recruitment as a spy, and then further for ego-based recruitment. Recruitment for espionage is a slow process - even slower in a fantasy world where some races reasonably expect to live 500+ years. Many intelligence agencies will do a sort of light meet-and-greet just to start a file on various people who might years later be of interest. The Assembly would have cultivated Essek as an intelligence asset with the same degree of time and care - and using some of the same methods - that Trent used to turn the Blumenthal trio into assassins.
If they followed a modern playbook, they would have made contact with Essek anywhere from 2 to 10 years before the theft - nothing underhanded. A Cerberus mage approaches him at a negotiation or conference and strikes up a conversation. Then it’s increasing “chance” encounters to get Essek familiar with the handler, play the “we’re both mages, really we’re on the same side” angle to earn enough sympathy & trust to start talking regularly. Once the channel’s open, the handler and asset meet and/or talk routinely while the handler assesses the target’s motives, weaknesses, and the possibility that they’re a double agent.
Espionage proper then starts with small favors, acts Essek can rationalize as victimless or even helpful to the Dynasty. In this stage the handler is getting the asset comfortable with engaging in espionage. They reward the asset for what feels like minimal moral trespass. For Essek that would have been praising his research, encouraging avenues of investigation they knew the Dynasty had shut down. Having meetings with Ludinus plays right into the ego trip - the Head of the Assembly himself is taking the time to meet with him! The Assembly gets how important this work is! That keeps Essek isolated from Dynasty members who might convince him to take a step back and builds loyalty to the Assembly over the Dynasty.
Once an asset settles in, espionage becomes easier. Routines get established. Moral hurdles have been overcome. Now the asks get bigger and the rewards get sparser. The handler will suggest larger acts just to get the asset thinking about them, since the more they consider “just hypothetically” how to pull it off, the more likely it is they’ll do it. This is where the idea of stealing the beacons would get introduced (though of course it’s been the goal all along.) I’ll bet the Assembly hinted at all the study that could be done if they could just get to the beacons in person, constantly bemoaning the lack of access. By now Essek sees the Assembly as colleagues in arcane pursuits, kindred minds, unlike the boring, stuffy old mages of the Dynasty. Of course he could outwit the Dynasty’s security and get the beacons to the Assembly - he’s a prodigy, a genius, everyone says so. And it’s not like he was stealing all of them. The consecuted would be fine. Everyone would be fine.
None of this is intended to absolve Essek of personal responsibility. But it provides a context for his actions, and for why he might regret them so much even though he apparently did them willingly. Asset handlers are very, very good at drawing someone willing to commit minor transgressions into far greater crimes. Look at how Trent shaped Caleb, Astrid, and Eadwulf. He didn’t order them to execute their own parents on day one. He spent years coaxing, tempting, and coercing them into darker and darker crimes, letting them rationalize their own actions at each step, preying on the same vulnerabilities as Essek: isolation (separating the three from other students, telling them their work was secret), ambition (the promise of great arcane power, of shaping the Empire’s destiny), and ego (”we were going to keep the empire safe,” telling them they were gifted, they were chosen).
So how do IRL spies rationalize their actions? Those who spy for reasons of conscience or ideology have done the rationalizing ahead of time, but everyone else has to get there somehow. Some who spy for revenge tell themselves it’s what their superiors deserve, while others tell themselves everyone’s doing it. Some just need a lie to get started (most commonly about who they’re spying for), while others have to keep up the charade all along. Let’s look at a few cases similar to Essek’s that demonstrate just how slippery the slope can be.
Aldrich Ames, a long-term CIA officer slash double agent for the KGB, got suckered in by thinking he could control the situation and wasn’t really hurting anyone. Ames had chronic financial trouble related to excessive drinking & his wife’s lavish lifestyle and in 1985 came up with a plan: he would essentially con the KGB by selling them a minor amount of classified info that he deemed “virtually worthless.” In April he set up the exchange and the KGB paid him $50,000, enough to satisfy his immediate debts. But after actually doing it Ames said he felt he’d now crossed a line he couldn’t step back from, and continued to sell information to the Soviets. By the time he was caught he had, by his own admission, compromised “virtually all Soviet agents of the CIA.”
While some assets just need a lie to get started, others require a delicate dance of self-delusion. Col. George Trofimoff was an Army officer who ran the center where would-be Soviet defectors were assessed & questioned. Trofimoff, a Russian émigré at a young age, was chronically in debt. In 1969 he renewed his acquaintance with his stepbrother back in Russia, now a bishop in the Russian Orthodox Church, and began to pass secrets in return for money - but he and his stepbrother never framed the transactions as such. Trofimoff described their meetings as, “very informal. ... First, it was just a conversation between the two of us. He would ask my opinion on this and that--then, he would maybe ask me, 'Well, what does your unit think about it?' Or, 'What does the American government think about it?’” His compensation was similarly informal: “I said I needed money. ... And he says, 'I tell you what, I'll loan it to you.' So he gave me, I think, 5,000 marks and then, it wasn't enough, because I needed more. ... Then he says, 'Well, you know, I'll tell you what. You don't owe me any money. And if you need some more, I can give you some more. Don't worry about it. You're going to have to have a few things, this and that.' And this is how it started.” Trofimoff could pretend to himself that he wasn’t really spying - just having a chat with his stepbrother - and wasn’t really getting paid for it - just borrowing a little money.
This got longer than I intended it to be and there’s still plenty to talk about, so I’ll save the rest for a second post. Next time: what happens long-term to espionage assets? And what happens if an asset regrets their actions and/or attempts to cut off contact with their handlers?
(This accidentally turned into a series on Essek & IRL espionage: Parts 1, 2, 3, 4)

i regret looking at the notes on this post because i am in tears. "my hypothesis is that--" babes please remember how you learned to make a hypothesis back in third grade. you can LOOK UP what the gene is! you don't have to just MAKE UP FACTS to show off how smart you are! PLEASE actually click through links before speculating or just making claims, jfc
the paper OP links is a review on the evolution & genetics of mammilian coat pigmentation by Eizirik and Trindade. Using control+f for "placenta" easily gets you the passage in question:
Using domestic cat pedigrees, Eizirik et al. (108) identified two genomic regions associated with variation in coat patterning and proposed a two-step model for mammalian pattern formation. The first step involves the establishment of a prepattern in the skin early in embryonic development, and the second is the differential pigmentation of coat areas delimited by the prepattern. Kaelin & Barsh (109) further developed and discussed this model, which served as a basis for the discovery and characterization of the first genes involved in this process (56). One of them was TAQPEP (or LVRN), an aminopeptidase that was until then known only as an important player in human placentation. When this gene is mutated in domestic cats and cheetahs, coat patterns become less organized (i.e., decrease their periodicity), indicating that it acts in the first step of pattern formation (prepattern establishment) (56). However, how an aminopeptidase that is essential to maternal–fetal interaction in humans acts in the establishment of coat markings in felids is still unknown.
So basically, Eizirik et al. suggest that in their model for cat coat development, there's some sort of establishment of what the pattern will look like during embryonic skin development, which they call "prepatterning." That "56" citation leads to a paper that found that two genes (Taqpep and Edn3) contributing to tabby pattern variation.
So what is this Taqpep? According to 56 (Kaelin et al), it's "a type II membrane-spanning protein of the M1 aminopeptidase family, whose members are characterized by the presence of GAMEN exopeptidase (SAMEN in Taqpep) and HEXXHX18E zinc-binding motifs in their extracellular domains," which is a ton of jargon that's way outside my area of knowledge. But, long story short: it's a guy that hangs out on membranes and does stuff to proteins. There's lots of different aminopeptidases, but this specific one was previous only found in human embryos (x). given humans and cats have a common ancestor, it's not weird we have some of the same genes. it is always pretty interesting when our same genes seem to do different things!
also, BTW, here's the Kaelin et al proposal for what role Taqpep plays in skin development:
Tumblr media
i wanted to see if anyone else was publishing on this, and i found a write up by the same guy as the review (Eizirik) on a study on Taqpep's role in tiger stripes:
In addition, this finding can be used to investigate convergent evolution among the cat species for which phenotype-altering Taqpep mutations have been described (Fig. 1). [...] Now, Sagar et al. (8) report an additional mutation in this [Taqpep] gene, in a third felid species, which is implicated in a similar phenotype (Fig. 1). Interestingly, these species belong to different evolutionary lineages within the family Felidae, with the Panthera genus (to which the tiger belongs) being the most divergent among present-day cat clades. This supports the hypothesis that the mechanism underlying the shape of felid markings is conserved among cat species, and that it was already present in the common ancestor of all present-day lineages of the Felidae, over 10 million years ago. An additional aspect is that these felid coat pattern-altering mutations all seem to induce loss of function of the Taqpep protein, with no apparent effect on other systems. This is intriguing, since this gene (aka Laeverin) has been reported to be a key player in human placentation (14), posing the questions of whether it has completely different functions in cats and humans, and what its functions may be in other groups of mammals. Additional studies, exploring other mammalian systems, are required to address this problem.
so, it appears to me that the link between the human function of Taqpep and the cat function is just something Eizirik is really intrigued by, rather than something the researchers in the cited studies are actually interested.
as several people in the notes have pointed out, it is a common pattern for the same genes to have different functions in different species, simply because they've had millions of years to change and repurpose all sorts of things. Taqpep isn't a magic "make pigments appear" gene and it's not a magic "make a placenta" gene-- it's a tiny membrane protein that slots into how a huge number of different genes work together to make more obvious phenotypes. perhaps cats simply do not need it for placentation, or they have another gene that now serves the same function. maybe millions upon millions of years ago, it did something completely different in the human-cat common ancestor. my point is, we don't know, and none of the publications i've cited speculate because apparently no one has looked into it (or if they have, Eizirik is not citing them and i didn't see them when I looked to see who was citing the pigmentation papers). there's multiple comments in the notes like "oh, it's probably this" based on literally nothing and apparently this is a huge pet peeve of mine!!!! did you know you can click the link and view what the gene is and what it codes for!!!!!!!!!
also people keep bringing up lines of blaschko/the human stripes post, which i also did a write up on because there's a ton of misinfo out there on it
was browsing thru papers about animal coloration and learned that a gene that helps make the placenta in humans (the thing that keeps you alive when you're a fetus in the womb) also exists in cheetahs, but in the cheetahs, it just controls the placement of their spots
How does THAT happen?!

Random consideration: there is an online legend about Oda can change story events if someone on the web/fans guess the thing. So... what do you think about this topic? It can be really valid? If yes, even for whatever eventual not-canon ships? I don't know, because ships are just a very side element in the story, and not like main events of the storyline. (And for my opinion, for Jin:be father topic, I could agree with who said is for the age, maybe. Anyway, I will ship FroBin forever).
Hey anon! Thank you for your question!
Maybe Oda really made Jinbe the dad because of age. right now Oda and Jinbe have the same age (46). He has two children who are (if the internet and my math are correct) 15 and 12 years old. So may it’s not unlikely? If he connects with Jinbe he would rather see him as a dad than a grandparent or a weird uncle.
-
Now, to the rest... I have to say sorry for answering so late but as of right now I’m writing parts of my answer and I literally pulling my hair because I really try to make sense of the whole situation and trying to understand the intention of a 46 year old japanese man. And this is long again so sorry about that. Anyway...
I have heard about that. I remembered something about Oda not reading Fan Theories and now I googled once more. Apparently this is the newest Information:
Tumblr media
"Oda once said he will change OP story if it coincides with fan theories. But according to TV show today, Oda will never change his plan about "final chapter" even if a fan theory hits the nail on the head. Oda said in 1999 that he had already decided final panel and chapter."
https://twitter.com/sandman_AP/status/1352851201478418432?s=20
I don’t think Oda is actively browsing the web for OP content ( how would he have time to) but he gets fanmail with questions and suggestions. And considering that over 4 million people are One Piece fans... one of them has to get it correct eventually. Trying to avoid any similarity with any fan-theory is IMPOSSIBLE.
And I do believe that Oda knows how he wants One Piece to end and won’t change that, no matter what.
As for the details in-between........ I wouldn’t say Oda is not prone to be a Troll and sometimes downright an ass towards his fans. XD Never out of malice but because he thinks it’s funny.
I’m also sure he will never focus on romance in the manga, but since love is an important part of life it will come into play now and then. Classic romance (?) more with side-characters  (Roger/Rouge, Sai/Baby5, Bege/Chiffon) than with main (Strawhats) but still possible.
He may very well edit less-important plot lines if they don't change the ending.
That also includes, that I absolutely think it’s possible that the Strawhats will have romantic involvement at the end of the story. At the moment it is never in the focus, except for plot reason (Whole Cake Island for example, though that is an entirely different topic) but absolutely possible.
Because the Strawhats boning each other or maybe someone outside of the crew will not change the story. It has no influence to anything, except if it’s on a higher scale, like if Luffy really suddenly married Boa Hancock. That would influence the political outline of the world.
Meanwhile Pauli/Iceburg or Noland/Cagara or Bartolomeo/Cavendish have literally no influence to the story (anymore). And I don’t think I have to start on things like other rare pairs or even OC-ships.
That being said, and having more stuff in mind, I wouldn’t put it past Oda to actually focus more on Jin/Bin.
Why? Well...
we had so many interactions between Robin and Franky after the time skip that it was almost ridiculous. In every single arc we see them fight alongside each other. We had strong romantic tropes portrayed with them:
Their meeting after the timeskip (Sabaody Archipelago)
Franky having his head in Robins lap (Punk Hazard)
Wearing the same shirt (Dressrosa)
Finishing each others sentence (Zou)
Franky offering Robin a ride and her answering with a heart (Wano)
And the moment the internet exploded when Robin was holding Frankys face. Which yeah, only a Colorspread and not canon yadda yadda
For now let’s gloss over all the other moments that showed that they cared for each other.
... so many.
Anyway what I want to say is that Oda had declared “All the Strawhats are in love with adventure.” and “I won’t focus on romance.”  but is seemingly showing a connection between Franky and Robin, that made one think that he might actually be aboard the ship even if the fandom itself is rather silent and small.
Meanwhile when Jinbe appeared (in the timeskip) he was instantly a hit. His popularity then rose thanks to Fishmen Island Arc. And again I can’t blame anyone. On the other hand Franky always had a hard stance. This was recently shown again because is the lowest ranked Strawhat in the popularity poll.
One (Oda) might come to a conclusion here:
Maybe people don’t like Franky and so would dislike FRobin. But since Oda also seems to enjoy grown up relationships (?) maybe he thinks Jinbe is the only reasonable replacement?  -> It could be a tactial decision.
Maybe he really changed his opinion and personally likes one more than the other. He was a FRobin supporter but now likes JinBin more? It wouldn't change anything for the story and there wouldn't be any harm -> It could be a personal decision.
Maybe he fears that he put too many hints in the manga and now has to paddle back? Because let’s be honest, until the colourspread with Robin putting her hand on Frankys face... the FRobin fandom was on the backburner. And so he wants to throw out some Red Herrings.  -> Again a tactial decision
Maybe he never inteded to make it  romantic and it is actually all just friendship. Subtext is something many authors use without being aware of it. (Just ask anyone who is a lesbian!Nami fan. They have good points.) -> A mistake from the very beginning.
And you can use these same thoughts for every other non-canon ship.
Please take everything of this with a grain of salt because I try to understand the intention of a man who is more than 10 years my senior and from a culture I can’t even start to try to comprehend (sometimes I don’t even get my own culture), who is the head figure of a money-making machine. So it’s hard to tell what else influences his decisions.
My interpretations are influenced by my own experiences and knowledge which is big and vast but also stretched very thin.
Last but not least I want to make clear that any speculation is really the same as asking a crystal ball. In the western fandom we have only few people who can even slightly try to give an insight to the whole thing and they (smart enough) keep out of any shipping discourse.
tl;dr: I don’t think Oda will change the ending. But I do think that he is willing to change minor plotlines  and so yes I think Oda might change couples for any possible reason, as long as it does not change the ending, and he does not even has to choose a good reason because in the end they are his characters and he is free to do whatever he wants with them.

So getting to read @thejakeformerlyknownasprince 's FMA AU reminded me of my own ideas for a FMA/Animorphs fic. A crossover, in this case, a Megamorphs of sorts (complete with rotating narration) because I really want an excuse to have the Animorphs interact with the characters of the FMA universe. I don't have enough ideas worked out to confidently write a whole fanfic yet, so I think I'll just share some of my ideas so that at least they don't stay inside my head forever like the vast majority of ideas that I either never finish enough to post it or just never get around to at all, especially when my brain is always generating new plot bunnies instead of focusing on developing the ones I already have, it's so distracting lol
(Also maybe y'all could give some suggestions if you wanna, I'd definitely appreciate it lol)
Anyway, here it is:
First off, the answer as to how exactly the Animorphs end up in the FMA universe: I was kicking around a few ideas for this, and was originally thinking something along the lines of like, a freak accident that somehow results in them ending up in front of the Gate of Truth, but I think a better idea would be for an alchemist (or perhaps even several alchemists) to end up in the Aniverse, get Yeerkified, and the Yeerk (or Yeerks, as it may be), intrigued by the memories and knowledge of an alternate Earth where you can manipulate matter and shape it according to your will with nothing more than a well drawn chalk circle (or even less than that if you've been through the Gate, as the Yeerk(s) will eventually discover), lured in by the idea of a legendary object that supposedly can be used to circumvent a pesky little law known as Equivalent Exchange, decides to pull something of a "Tom's Yeerk and his Yeerk buddies a la book 52" deciding to start their own colony in the FMAverse where they won't have to answer to the Council of Thirteen or the Visserarchy (well, at least the ones higher ranked than the Yeerk in charge, who, I imagine, would have to be a Sub-Visser at the very least to have the power to arrange all this) in addition to being able to use alchemy, which, much like the morphing power, can be used for a massive variety of things, ranging from merely convenient to pretty damn useful in a pinch to OP as fuck to even just downright terrifying.
It takes a lot of time and meticulous planning, of course, as they have to find a way to transport the Yeerks, their ship, and all the other stuff they'll need to thrive over there through the Gate and into the FMAverse-- all while in a universe where alchemy flat out doesn't work. The Yeerks have to figure out how to get around that issue, and it takes at least a year of research and using their new hosts' alchemical knowledge to work out a solution, but they work it out, and soon enough they get everything set up and ready to go. At some point, the Chee find out about this secret unknown project going on, inform the Animorphs about it, and Jake decides that they should at least check it out on the off chance that it's something big.
That's where the story officially starts: with our team of traumatized teenage shapeshifters at the location where this thing is being set up (haven't figured out the where yet). They've spent the past several days spying on these Yeerks, but still aren't sure what exactly is going on-- they keep talking about opening a gate-- and aren't sure if it's worth it. Marco's convinced the whole thing is ridiculous, especially after overhearing a human Controller mention something about a "Philosopher's Stone" ("What is this, Harry Potter? Are they gonna wave wooden sticks around and yell in Latin?") . Rachel is bored at this point, and just wants to kick ass and call it a day-- they were probably up to no good anyway. Cassie isn't particularly keen on the asskicking part, but she's been having a bad feeling about all this that she can't shake, and Tobias agrees that something fishy is going on and says they should wait a few days-- after all, from what they've gleaned, whatever plans these Yeerks had would be set in motion very soon. Ax, being Ax, declares as usual that he'll just go along with whatever Prince Jake orders, though when Jake presses him about his opinion, he just says he isn't sure what to make of it. In the end, they keep it up for a couple more days, and sure enough, the time comes for the Yeerks to "open the gate", whatever that means.
After all the time they'd spent spying on the Yeerks, it is conveniently now, when the Yeerks are about to do their thing, that they're discovered. It quickly turns into a fight, and the Animorphs attempt to bail as they're soon overwhelmed-- and then the Gate is opened.
None of them had any idea what to expect next. They certainly weren't expecting the blue lightning that erupted around them in a massive circle, seeming to originate from the curving lines that had been so painstakingly carved into the floor. They aren't expecting the atmosphere to turn dark and purple and creepy, or for a giant grey eye to suddenly appear beneath them, or for wavy black tentacle arms to come out of that eye. And they definitely were NOT expecting to abruptly find themselves in the white void of Zerospace.
Only they aren't in Z-space, exactly. Surrounded by it, sure, but somehow they stand there, as if on solid ground, surrounded by the eerie blankness that had once nearly suffocated them to death.
Each Animorph is utterly alone, with nothing and no one else in sight. That is, until they hear a voice, one that sounds like several voices speaking in unison, and suddenly they see a figure-- or, more accurately, an outline of a figure, with only shadows to mark where the figure ended and the void began. The figure is shaped like a human in all but Ax and Tobias's case: the figure Ax sees is shaped like an Andalite, and Tobias's version takes the form of a bird.
Truth gives the whole "I am God, I am the world, and I am also you" speech, then informs them they can't pass through the Gate without payment. Suddenly, there's a huge gateway where previously there was nothing. Truth is unconcerned with the fact that these "A-ni-morphs" have zero clue what's going on-- it simply takes the required toll and sends them on their way.
Except the toll is literal body parts-- which, even then, isn't usually a big deal for an Animorph, but in this case it absolutely is a big deal, because, as they'll soon discover, there's no way they're going to just replace their lost limbs through morphing. It's expressly forbidden for one to simply have nice things in this universe; in other words, Truth isn't letting them off the hook that easily.
The discovery that they're not able to replace their lost body parts through morphing is especially horrifying to Ax, because, well, y'know... book 40. The one that every Ax fan, and really anyone who otherwise genuinely enjoys Ax's character, would like to pretend never fucking happened.
In fact, given Truth's precedent for irony when extracting payment from people who've opened/been through the Gate in the series, I have no doubt in my mind that Ax would end up suffering the exact same fate as Mertil. Andalites, after all, place high value on their tail blades, especially the warriors; it's their number one go-to weapon when shit hits the fan. Ax himself is such a warrior, in fact it's a huge part of who he is as a person. Needless to say I think yeeting Ax's tail blade would be the exact kind of twisted irony that Truth would employ.
He gets over himself eventually-- well, sort of. However, it takes him a long time to truly come to terms with it-- instead of accepting that the attitudes he'd been taught his whole life regarding those who aren't fully able-bodied are actually shit, I feel like he'd be more likely to double down on them, internalizing them, and actually go into full-on self loathing as a result.
He holds his metaphorical tongue, though, upon seeing that Tobias has suffered a payment that is arguably far more cruelly ironic-- given that Tobias is a bird, given that his initial attraction to the morph that eventually became his default body came from the sense of freedom and escapism only provided through flying, I think it's fairly obvious what Truth would take: his wings.
As for the others: Rachel has lost her arm (for basically the same reason Ed did), Cassie loses her hands (which she uses to, you know, help injured animals and stuff), and as for Jake... well, it was a bit of a struggle, the best I could come up with is the idea of him going blind much like Mustang did after being forced to open the Gate (though maybe not for the same reason, though... idk. If anyone has any better suggestions, please let me know lol, I couldn't think of any solid ideas for what body part would be ironic for Jake to lose). Marco is the only one who doesn't lose any outwardly visible body parts-- what he loses is his voice.
At some point, they are discovered, taken into custody by the Amestrian military, and eventually they end up in Colonel Mustang's office. Mustang listens to their story with a massive dose of skepticism. He isn't sure what to make of these bizarre barefoot children, nor their claims of fighting bodysnatching slugs from outer space by turning into animals, nor their wingless pet hawk, nor... well, he could only assume the other creature was some sort of chimera, although he had zero clue what animals could have possibly been used to make something with blue fur and extra eyes.
At this point, they're about to do a morphing demonstration to prove to the Colonel that they aren't completely batshit, when suddenly the door is slammed open, and a teenage boy with blond hair and sharp golden eyes comes sauntering in, accompanied by a hulking giant covered head to toe in a suit of armor.
The boy immediately starts shouting at Mustang, calling him a bastard and accusing him of wasting his time, to which Mustang responds by merely rolling his eyes and sighing, as if this sort of thing happens all the time (spoiler alert: it does). After a moment, the kid stops as he takes notice of the other kids standing in the room.
"So," he says, calmly, as if he wasn't yelling at his superior just a moment ago, "what's the deal with these fuckers?"
The casual use of the kind of language that would have surely landed them in hot water back home was quite shocking, but they don't comment on it. Instead, Rachel says, in a voice sweet as honey, "Oh, look, Marco. He's just as short as you are."
Before Marco could turn to glare daggers at her (come on, it wasn't like he could argue back in that moment), the boy goes absolutely ballistic, and the armored guy has to physically restrain him as he screams obscenities at Rachel ("The fuck did you just call me, you freakishly oversized bitch? I'll show you too-fucking-short-to-fucking-sit-at-the-fucking-table-without-a-fucking-booster-seat! Call me short one more fucking time, I fucking dare you to! You think I give a shit that you're a girl? I'll fuck that pretty face of yours right up, just you fucking wait--")
"Brother!" The armored guy cries. "Calm down!" Then, to the Animorphs: "I'm sorry about my brother's behavior. He's, um, a bit sensitive about his height."
"A bit sensitive" is the understatement of the century, but none of the Animorphs call him out on it. They're too dumbfounded by the sound of his voice, which sounds sweet, innocent, and, despite his size, sounds like it belonged to a boy no more than nine or ten years old.
And that's where I'm going to leave it for now, since I've spent way too long on this post already. I have a few other ideas, but mostly in bits and pieces, not really any more comprehensive plot points beyond this point. Please do let me know what you think!

Shadows House
Tumblr media
I have a lot of thoughts surrounding this particular show, both good & bad.
Allow me to give a quick summary for anyone who hasn't seen/read it!
Shadows House is about 'a faceless family of nobles who all live within this giant manor, the Shadows House.
When a Shadow comes of age they receive a 'Living Doll' to both serve as their face and to clean the soot they emit from their bodies.
The most important rule of the living dolls is "don't fret over trivial matters"
A task which is difficult for the ever curious doll Emiliko.
Watch this tale unfold as Emiliko & her mistress Kate navigate this ever mysterious Manor together.'
For a fan of slow burn thrillers, horror, slice of life, supernatural & mystery series' this has been an absolute blast!
It's not quite the combination of genres you'd expect from a show, but it works really well here!
In fact I was so into the anime that this is actually the first show where I broke down and read the manga!
Unfortunately there's no official English release, but at least there are some people translating the series!
As much as I'd like to go on about the manga, this post is meant to be more so about the anime so I'll (try to) leave it at that.
Though i feel obligated to warn anime onlys I'll likely refer the manga a lot in a spoiler section latter in this post I'll try to be vague but I can't guarantee anything. For anyone worried about that I'll lable it do you can read on until then.
Everything from the animation to the music was amazing & completely fit the mood of the story! I remember a couple scenes where I actually teared up because of this!
The Ending theme is an absolute banger! I've listened to that on repeat ever since I first heard it! And the Opening is also great! It's cool for it to be an instrumental, stuff like that is pretty rare! I also heard the song in the op as a motif in the music throughout the show! It really sets the right mood in each scene it's in! It's amazing for getting into each episode!
In terms of adaptation almost everything from the beginning to the end of the Debut arc was done amazingly well!
Even with the stuff they cut it still holds true to the spirit of its source.
The main important part that was cut is something that could easily be introduced latter if they decide to go for a second season, so I'm not too mad about that.
However! Everything after the debut is a bit of a different story.
There was a lot I liked about the last couple episodes but there were some parts that were immersion breaking for me.
I've been being vague up until this point l, but I'm planning on going into spoiler territory for both the anime and manga after this. So I'll make a quick spoiler free summary of my thoughts before moving onto that.
I really really loved this show but in my opinion the last 3 episodes were the weakest of them all. They went anime only for the ending. I don't mind that on it's own, but it was rushed and the writing was sloppy at times.
Now I'm not telling you to not watch the show! Most of It's really really good, and I can still see people enjoying the parts I'm talking about if they want to give the anime a try. Overall I've fallen in love with this series and I could never recommend it enough.
If what I'm saying is giving you bad vibes the manga is available and doesn't have the issues I've mentioned. You can look for a translation online, it didn't take me long to find one so don't worry too much about that.
Also! if you're an anime only who's finished the series and want to know where to pick up the Manga I'd recommend at least skiming through the beginning. I know it might not be what you're looking for but there were a bunch of small scenes that either got cut or were merged for adaptation purposes that I think are super cute & give more context to different aspects of the setting. However! Pay close attention during the "night watchers part" something important got cut .
~~~Now for spoilers!!!!~~~
I don't want to make it sound like I'm some manga purist who hates the very thought of the slightest change from the source. I'm anime only for a lot of different shows and I've always despised it when that type of manga reader reared it's ugly head.
While I'll admit some changes did bother me I won't make a fuss about the smaller stuff.
With that said!
I hinted earlier in this post that I didn't have a big problem with Robe-same being cut. That was because without them there it does make for a more complete story if they only get one season to work with.
If there is another season they can easily be introduced latter on. Like maybe Emiliko & Shaun can meet them when the Debutant class reunion is going on before they talk on the roof (or right after that) I actually think that would be the perfect time to introduce them (other than the time they were supposed to appear, but I digress)
Louise teaming up & being friendly with Kate can be explained with some dialogue changes at the first Debutant Class Reunion. Louise can say she was just trying to show off or that she just wanted to get back at Edward and that she isn't interested in helping Kate with her problems. Things can then go on as they did in the manga.
Kates being reckless & telling everything to John can be explained by her being extremely panicked when Emiliko went missing, as long as there are some lines of dialogue adressing this it's fine. Though I do wish she tried to keep some stuff a secret but couldn't because Shaun tries to interfer because he's still brainwashed, or something along those lines. It felt a bit weird after she just told Emiliko to keep that stuff between them. Still that could be explained by how panicked she was.
There are other things, but I don't want to drag the post on too long. Most of the issues can be fixed with little changes here & there.
I never had a problem with the idea of them going in an anime only direction. I just want to have a good time with the show.
Unfortunately I can't 100% vouche for the direction the show went in. There were elements that I can't excuse, even viewing it as it's own entity instead of an adaptation.
My main complaint with it is how they handled the brainwashing of Ricky & Lou. They didn't say a word when the Debutants were talking badly about Edward & even went along with a plan to go against him. It makes absolutely no sense!
Shaun freaked out when John only suggested that he didn't have to be loyal to the house. These guys were flat out rebelling against an adult! It felt like Ricky & Lou didn't have a purpose & were just there to be there.
The whole point of the coffee is to influence shadows against doing stuff like this. It makes the coffee seem pointless and the adults seem dumb for relying on it to control the kids.
I haven't even brought up the fact that both of their brainwashings were broken by something as simple as a few kind words. It straight up contradicts the rules established by both the Anime and Manga.
This becomes very apparent when you consider all the trouble John & Kate went through to free Shaun & Emiliko.
This was my biggest complaint, but I have some other issues as well.
The next big one is how they handled Edward.
1. Why on earth would he even consider kidnapping Emiliko when he had complete control of the childrens wing? Before this point he was depicted as being a lot more crafty than this. He could easily have Kate monitored or something.
2. Why didn't he use his powers to stop them like what he did to Maryrose & Rosemary when they fought back being taken to the adults wing? He's already shown off his power at this point, why not?
3. Why did he reveal his soot powers at all!? Especially while using his face in front of the kids! The whole unification thing is one of the biggest secrets of the house for good reason! There's no way he wouldn't get in huge trouble for exposing it to children!
Here are some other related questions.
Why didn't Kate, Emiliko, & John react to Edward using soot powers? They shouldn't know about unification yet so why didn't they act shocked, or say anything about it?
Is Edward being banished even an option in the Shadows House? Wouldn't the third floor lords just dispose of him rather than risk letting him leave?
How did John even get a veiled dolls outfit? Louise had to use her powers to get Kate one & she left a long time ago.
I can't think of much else at the moment, but I think you get my point.
Please don't take this as me saying that I hate the show because of these episodes. Even if I consider them the weakest of the series I still found a lot of parts to be very enjoyable!
Like I thought it was adorable When Edward was attempting to interrogate Emiliko & she kept being her sunshine self pretending to eat & falling asleep.
Barbara getting to tell off Edward for breaking the rules was great!
I loved seeing Shaun hatch the plan to get Kate into the adults wing to save Emiliko.
Seeing John (attempt to) sneak around the adults wing had me rolling!
The ending scene of Shaun, Ricky, & Lou singing gave me the chills.
(Though I wonder how they'd handle Shaun & Emiliko being brainwashed again since they already used the scenes where they're freed)
Kate & Emilico being propelled by John back to the children's wing was absolutely amazing! I found Shaun & Ricky running over to catch them to be super sweet! (Not to mention the way that scene was animated was absolutely gorgeous!)
Getting hints to what was supposed to come after the debut was nice, at least the groundwork is there in case this gets a season 2!
To (try to) wrap this all up while there were a lot of things I loved and disliked about this show I still had a really fun time watching it!
I kinda hope there's a season two just to see if they can tidy up the mess that the last few episodes created.
Regardless of whether that happens or not I came out of this with a series I absolutely adore.
Heck I could make a whole other post about the manga. (Hopefully one that's less ranty)
Anyway! I won't take any more of your time.
I hope you all have a wonderful day/night! And I hope to see you in my next post!
(Sorry if this one was a bit of a mess!)
Interesting post I happened upon after I published this, so saved it for the weekend reblog:
…lending credence to the "Imu's inspiration is Nero" angle.
Nero was apparently a pretty popular dude and his current reputation as a megalomaniac madman was the work of his enemies after death.
For a thrilling bonus point, there was a –wait for it– rumour that Nero didn't actually die, but would one day return to Rome.
It will be interesting when (if) Oda shows a Void Century flashback, but based on what we know so far, I think Imu is immortal. I also think they started out good.
I saw a theory somewhere (if anyone knows what I'm talking about, please drop me a link so I can attribute things properly!) that Imu started out with the best intentions. There must have been some reason for the Void Century after all; who knows what we'll uncover in the coming months! Oda does like his scales of grey, both in art and in morals and in history: no-one is purely good or evil, so why would the WG be the one exception?
However, power corrupts and never-ending power corrupts endlessly, and during 800 years Imu has warped their view of the world, moving from benevolent (hidden) dictator° to a despotic tyrant°, levelling countries (Lulusia) and friends (Egghead) alike in their… quest for power? Efforts to keep the world in balance?
What we know…
There's been a huge war – why, we don't know. We do know that the Ancient Kingdom created and dispersed –somehow together with Nefertari D. Vivi– the Poneglyphs and scattered them around the world. Through an awakened Ope Ope No Mi, perhaps, as theorists have suggested? They also included directions to Laugh Tale.
Moreover, no-one could read the Ponegplyphs, except the Kozuki clan on Wano who apparently made them, which seems like an oversight if the Ancient Kingdom wanted the knowledge spread.
And somehow Roger seems to be the first who could read the stones (Voice of all things) – why couldn't (or didn't) anyone else do that for over eight centuries? That's a hell of a long time. But I digress.
(However, I have a hunch that the current difficulty of getting the four Lode Poneglyphs in one place may be a result of the Great Pirate Era, started by Roger:)
Tumblr media
As he says in chapter 966, the stones have apparently been viewed as merely 'cultural relics', so probably in a similar way we today view old hierogplyhs or kuneiform writing. Nice thing about the past, but who really cares, except for history's sake? (I do. I care so so much. But I digress once more.)
No-one before this seems to have had a reason to gather the stones. Maybe the red lode stones were merely a curiosity and a bragging piece for centuries, like some rare work of art or animal from a distant land: "you know those weird stones scattered about? Well, I have a special one."
Until Roger, with his Voice of all things came along and started listening to the stones and went "…wait a minute…"
Who knows! But it's interesting to speculate :)
Food for thought and theorising for the upcoming month!
° going with the Oxford English Dictionary definition of:
dictator: "A person exercising absolute authority of any kind or in any sphere; a person who authoritatively prescribes a course of action or dictates what is to be done", and
tyrant: "one who seizes upon the sovereign power in a state without legal right; an absolute ruler; a usurper"
…since in my view Imu has moved from the more neutral 'exercising absolute authority' to the more negative 'despotic usurper'. It's also interesting to think about the legal basis for their power since they technically lack legal right to rule as far as we know – the wording so far suggests a common understanding of the equality of the original 20 families†. So what legitimises Imu's powers?
†How many are the Celestial Dragon families today? Are they merely the original 20, in which case we know quite a few of their names already, or can you become a CD, as York wants to? Have especially prominent people –or people the WG needs to coerce into silence– been elevated during the 800 year history?
Chapter 1086 — The Five Elder Planets
What a great chapter to leave off on a break for! The theorizing will go wild…
First, Igaram's concern for Vivi is touching:
Tumblr media
…while Pell and Chaka are looking out for their king, as the guardian deities of Arabasta should.
Something is in the air, if the faces of the other royals are anything to go by. They don't look like a happy bunch; rumours from the last leg of the Reverie?
Second, have I already said how much I love the WE HQ? It's a flying kettle! That shoots out News Coos!
I love it.
Tumblr media
I wonder at what point Wapol caved and told Vivi what had happened to her dad. They said she'd been crying when they arrived at the WE HQ, so before current day events, but here he's still trying to deflect her questions. Maybe she figured it out from his denial? Maybe he just told her? Who knows (I want to know).
And then, totally unnecessary fandom speculation!
About a ship!
Tumblr media
(Poor lil' Bonney. I'm sure being pint-sized helped her get aboard the ship easier, but it also underlines her quest: she is literally a child on her way to save her father.)
(By the way: in our universe, Tajine is a North African dish, also known as maraq or marqa.)
The drawing order and perspectives makes it look like Sabo is lying in the stem/front. Normally the sides mainly bulge outward from the keel, but here the planks curve distinctly up. However, when looking at traditional sailing ships, the shape doesn't work that way there:
Tumblr media
(Link)
It can look like that in the aft:
Tumblr media
(Link)
The other explanation might be an assistant's perspective mistake when drawing the bilge, or Lulusia's ship has a quite rare inward-bulging bow.
One of the few examples I found is the dhow, an Arabic ship:
Tumblr media
(Link), although the 3D model can give a better view of the keel and curvature:
Tumblr media
(Link)
So either Lulusia has a really, really cool royal ship, or there's some perspective shenanigans going on.
And now, back to our regularly scheduled analysis.
So.
Tumblr media
…the floor is so horribly at odds with the rest of the room. Just sayin'.
Presenting: the SECOND tangent of the post.
During the 15th to 17th centuries, so covering reneissance, baroque and rococo, intricate decorations were the thing to have. The exact style and execution varied, of course, but you still were supposed to have so much detailing all over the place, both due to structural reasons (hiding those load-bearing columns and beams and servants and such) and style (look at all the money I have to put on this stuff).
Pangea Castle looks quite a bit like the Château de Chambord, so smack dab French reneissance architecture. Normally, you'd do parquet floors in the fancier parts of the castle, which means geometric and rectangular, like so:
Tumblr media
(Link)
Of course, you could do circular, but then it'd probably be inspired by Roman mosaics, and thus geometric and repetitive, like so:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Link 1, Link 2)
The floor in Pangea Castle is… just weird. I know there's probably art-related reasons for it (looks interesting, not as boring as a grid, etc), but the polka dot pattern really sticks out.
End of second tangent, s'il vous plaît.
Tumblr media
Oda truly is a master storyteller.
The readers have been going bonkers for a few months now, trying to figure out what Devil Fruit powers Imu has based on the complete eradication of Lulusia. Is it star power? Is it nuclear? Is it pure light? Is it something completely different?
And then it turns out to be the One Piece-version of nuclear weapons, completing the parallells between Vegapunk and Einstein: both brilliant scientists who wanted to work for peace and the good of humanity, but whose insights were quickly weaponised.
It i also interesting to see how quick the Five Elders are to accept that Imu wants to eradicate a whole kingdom who is part of the World Government. I figure this might lead to more rebellion. After all, what is it worth to be a member of the WG if you're still not protected against horrible acts of violence? The only reason shown so far for people want to join the WG is based on pirates and the navy: they get protection and pay for the Celestial Dragons upkeep. I can't see this continuing much longer when the news about Lulusia get out – because at least Vegapunk will put two and two together. It was his invention being used, after all.
Tumblr media
We have names!
Which might change when the official translation comes out!
But still. Interesting selections. Finance might comprise all financial activity, but why is then agriculture (food production) separate from environment (nature itself)? Mercantile activity is quite far from macroeconomic theories, which makes the lumping of all economic stuff under one heading quite interesting.
Tumblr media
THERE IS A S-FLAMINGO!
My life is now complete.
I wonder why S-Croc looks so sad, though. S-Gecko and S-Flamingo looks like they're having the time of their lives, after all.
Also: what powers do they have? All the possibilities!
Tumblr media
I wonder what Dragon is wondering about. He has a lot of ellipses this chapter and few words to spare. Does he agree with Sabo's decision to keep silent and live the lie? Does he disapprove? What does Iva-chan think about it all?
Tumblr media
Ancient weapon, my old friend? The Arc Maxim 2.0? Something Completely Different?
(Also: traditional European-style ship depicted here as Lulucia's vessel. Yet the dream for a dhow still lives on!)
Jumping a bit, but Iva puts all our thoughts into words here so neatly:
Tumblr media
In Egghead, Vegapunk says it's his dream to create the ultimate energy source. However, he doesn't say he's managed to do so yet: he's still working towards it. Therefore the thing Sabo saw probably wasn't an ancient weapon – or if it was, it wasn't at full power. Or then it was a "fire once and find another mother flame"-solution.
Whatever it was, it was horrible news for the people of Lulusia.
And then: the identity of Imu.
Tumblr media
There's so many theories going on, tying Imu to the Roman emperor Nero or the city of Verona or the small coastal village of Nerano , also in Italy. From where we get to another Roman emperor, who is actually called Nerona: Tiberio Nerone, also known as Tiberius, an able politician who spent his last years on the island of Capri.
I'm sure we'll see where Oda draws his inspiration from sooner or later.
And the other big reveal of the chapter: the Figarland family.
Tumblr media
(I don't think Oda will kill off Mjosgard. He is sentenced, he is not dead yet. Will the solution be banishment, a figurative death? We'll see, I'm sure.)
(I like the moon hair!)
(Edit: The cake line had me wheezing. Seriously. Scared the cat.)
I haven't seen Film Red yet, but as I gather from others, it's revealed that Shanks is a Figarland. He was also found on God Valley by Roger, so putting two and two together, we get a family connection.
However, what I'm interested in is the rankings of Celestial Dragons.
a) Saint Figarland Garling was a king
b) He is a Celestial Dragon
c) He has the power to be both judge, jury and probably executioner
How does it all fit together?
CDs are hitherto shown to just laze around in Mary Geoise and sometimes descend into the plebeian world for their own amusement. None of them is shown to be involved in the world as kings – that's the thing they specifically abdicated from 800 years ago. So why was Figarland a king? What was his role on God Valley – and what was God Valley?
So interesting! Much to think about.
I give the chapter thumbs up for lore drops and the chance for a well-deserved rest.
F#$%ing uh Calm After the Storm cuz the Storm Thing
guys this is 10k words already ripppp
chapter 1, chapter 2
Chapter 3
The emergency lantern was still on, dimly illuminating the room. That's when you spotted the alcohol from last night or perhaps lack thereof. The bottle was completely empty. Luckily it was not that large or both of you would have died from alcohol poisoning. (Drink responsibly!) The terrible hangover symptoms make a lot more sense now, normally you barely suffer from a night out.
You snuggle into the bed as much as your constraints would allow, the warmth and comfort easing your headache. As you move, you feel something crumble on your neck. You use your burnt arm to lightly touch what it was, only to find it to be dried snot. Ew. You were going to need a shower later. 2D lightly snores his head by your shoulder like how it was last night, not that you remembered. A trail of dried snot fell from his nose, and the thought that he sobbed on you tore you up. At least he looked at peace while he slept. With the soft light from the lamp, his eyebags were barely visible. His worry lines disappeared completely. His big, lost eyes were closed. He looked innocent and untroubled, how you imagined him to be were it not for Murdoc. You appreciated the rest of his face too. His button nose twitched while he slept. The clean line of his jaw. His thick eyebrows, surprisingly, do not make him look angry but adorable. It was about time that you admitted, to yourself at least, that you found all of him adorable, not just his eyebrows. His smile, his clumsy movements, his accent, his habit of being so attentive, it was all adorable. You liked adorable. You liked drawing adorable, you liked watching movies with adorable, you liked holding hands with adorable, you liked getting drunk with adorable. Hell, you even liked having hangovers with adorable, so long as you got to wake up captured in adorable's embrace.
Adorable, adorable, adorable.
His whimpers and flinching snapped you out of your trance. He frowned, "No...no..." he whispered, sounding in pain. "Lemme out! I'm in 'ere!" He started to shout and thrash around, messing up the covers, and even hitting you a couple times (only slightly less adorable than normal). None of which helped your hangover.
"2D, wake up. You're having a nightmare." You gently pushed him. That did nothing to change his behaviour. "D!" you said more forcefully. He calms down and then opens his eyes.
He sits up and rubs his eyes. "What's, What's goin on?"
"You were having a nightmare. How are you doing?" It was awkward. You didn't know if he was aware of how you two were sleeping before his nightmare. Would touching him be inappropriate right now? You refrained from doing so.
"From one nightmare to anofer, this 'angover will be the deaf of me." he grumbled.
"At least only one is real." You stand and go over to where he took out the ibuprofen yesterday. You open the drawer and find it filled to the bring with drugs. Thankfully, most of the bottles were empty, but 2D had enough pills here to turn quite a profit. Most had unpronounceable names and were completely foreign to you. Why does he have so many painkillers?
"Bof were real for me. I was relivin me coma." He said nonchalantly. He saw you shuffling through his pills. "Jus bring the lot of 'em ofer, I take make me mornin mix."
You grabbed as many as you could and brought them over. You wanted to ask about his experience, but if it bad enough to give him nightmares, then perhaps it's best left alone. "I guess it was a good thing I woke you up then?"
"It's always good to wake up to yew." He dumped around six pills into his hand and dry swallowed them like a professional. You were concerned about his drug habits and confused by his forwardness.
"Yeah, thanks for letting me crash here."
2D's grin slightly fell as he looked at you. He reached out and touched your neck with his finger, brushing away some of the dried goop on there. "Sorry for cryin on yew last night."
You lightly chuckled and you could still feel his ghosting over your skin. "I thought that might have been you."
"Yew don remember what 'appened?" He pulled his hand away.
"Should I?" Did something important happen last night? You worried that you were forgetting a pivotal moment.
"No, it's fine. I'll take yew to the showers to wash up." He got up and stretched, the shirt rising to expose his stomach, causing you to flush and turn away. You hoped you would remember if you made any advancements in that department. He leaves his outfit from last night on the floor, adding to the piles of clothes already there, as he walks to his closet. "Do yew need somefin to wear after your shower?"
You flush even deeper. You had forgotten about that. "Yes, please. Sorry."
"Don apologize! I 'ave enough for the bof of us." He pulled out a white tee and some loose black shorts. "These are the cleanest clothes I 'ave. I'll throw yours in the wash."
You grab them from him. "Thanks, D."
He leads you to the showers. "I'll be waitin in the kitchen for yew. See if I can grab us some breakfast."
You thank him and step inside. You set the clothes down and lock the door, stripping down now that Murdoc won't accidentally enter. 2D insisted that Murdoc doesn't even shower in the first place, but you still felt apprehensive. You nearly screamed when you turned on the water and it was ice cold. You fiddle with the knobs a bit. Burning hot, freezing cold. You start to understand Murdoc's position better. You finally managed to get it slightly not cold and reached for the soaps, finding 2D's cedarwood and vanilla scent.
It was so intimate. You felt like you were violating his privacy like you were borrowing a piece of his identity, his scent, at least until it wears off. You were secretly thrilled by it, smelling like him. Would he care? Would he notice? Would others notice? And, as Russel had before, suggest something that you desperately wanted? The smell washed over you like it did the first night you were with him. Only two days ago, you wanted nothing more than the interview to be over, to be finished. But now, you had made a great friend, and, you selfishly hope, something more.
After you finished rubbing your neck raw, you step out and put on the clothes 2D gave you. You took off the bandage he wrapped, and the edges of the burn had started to scar. He forgot a towel, so you were soaking wet. You left a trail of droplets as you navigated the halls you have memorized by now.
You were shivering by the time you reached the kitchen, your soaked through clothes doing little to help with the heat. 2D saw you enter and turned slightly red at the sight of you in his clothes. He wouldn't tell you, but it was the first time since Paula that someone else was wearing his clothes. He then noticed that you were shivering. "Yew cold again? Russ managed to get the stove on wifout anyone burnin so I'll bring you a cuppa."
"When you and 2D disappeared halfway through yesterday, Noodle got worried and thought y'all were kidnapped. She'll be glad to see that I was right about what really happened to you." Russel said, sitting on the couch, smirking again.
You blush furiously, getting his implication, and join him on the couch. "Russel! We didn't do anything!" You say in hushed tones, hoping 2D in the other room doesn't pick up on anything.
"Who said I said about you to doing anything?" He raised his eyebrow and grinned. Checkmate. You groaned and shield your blushing face from Russel, causing him to chuckle. "You know, I haven't seen 2D this open since-" He stopped himself.
"Paula?"
He nodded. "I'm surprised he told you about that. Look, you two are very close, hell you're wearing one of his favourite shirts and you smell like him. You seem to bring out a new version of 2D, he isn't even that worried about Murdoc anymore. I like this 2D. But, I gotta warn ya, other people may not. A broken person is easier to control than a happy one." Russel looked at you knowingly. "That being said, if you make him broken again. I will break you. Understood?"
You nod vigorously. "Crystal clear!"
"What are yew talkin about?" 2D comes over with a tray of food and two steaming mugs.
"Weather!" You blurt out as Russel says "Politics!"
2D looked confused as he set the food down. "Right. I brought us some oatmeal and I 'ope yew like peppermint tea."
"What? Come on, why does she get some, but when I want to use just one teabag, you smack it outta my hands!" Russel complained, throwing his hands into the air.
"It was the last one in the box!"
"You and I both know that you keep three boxes in Kong" he grumbled.
"Some pretty special tea then?" You ask.
"I drink it whenefer I need a pick-me-up!"
"Explains why you drink it so much," Russel said.
"To fink I was gonna give yew a cup too!" 2D feigns hurt as Russel vehemently apologizes. 2D eventually concedes and leaves to make a cup.
"See," Russel turns back to you, "two weeks ago he slapped me. Now, I get the tea. Not much has changed here other than you."
You blush. "I really didn't think I was doing anything."
"You help remind him of the outside world. That is doesn't always have to be how it is in Kong. This place can really suck the life out of you. You should stay in contact, even after you leave."
"Are you doing okay, Russel?"
He avoided your gaze. "Not really. But it helps to have a new face here. Somethin to shake things up a little."
You saw 2D approaching again. "Well, then I hope his tea is as good as he promises."
"What are yew talkin about dis time?" 2D said again, as if on repeat.
"Politics." you say as Russel goes "Weather." You look at each other and start laughing.
"We really need to get that down." You insist. 2D sets down Russel's matching mug and sits by you. "Always loved tea. It reminds me of Austen's writing."
"Friendship is certainly the finest balm for the pangs of disappointed love." 2D recites in a posh accent. You all chuckle at his poor imitation of it.
"I didn't know you could read!" Russel jests.
The conversation then shifts towards literature and you learned how well-read your companions are. It goes unspoken that 2D remembered the quote because of Paula's disappointed love.
The impromptu book club breaks up when Noodle and then Murdoc enter the kitchen. Noodle grabs a box of cereal and starts eating from it. "Ohayo!"
"Good morning!" You call back. Russel and 2D both look surprised. "You're telling me that you've been living with someone who exclusively speaks Japanese and you haven't tried to learn any?"
They both grumble. "We... make do." Russel finally manages.
"Hello, pet." Murdoc gently whispers, suddenly appearing by your ear, causing you to yelp. His presence scared off 2D who went to the kitchen to refill the tea. He breathes in. "You smell like the Face Ache." He growled. "I know what you're trying to do. You can't take my singer away from me."
He then stepped away from you and walked to the windows, saying loudly: "Would you look at that, the storm's slowing down."
You got his hint. "Right. Then I best pack my things."
2D looked crestfallen. "What? Yew's leavin already?"
"Yeah, sorry D, but I think I may have overstayed my welcome."
"I'll 'elp yew pack up then." He sighed and led you to where your clothes were.
It was a rather anticlimactic packing up. You kept trying to drop hints ("Your bed was so comfy, I'd love to sleep over again." "Your hair was so soft last night, I'm sure I dreamt it up") which he kept avoiding ("Yeah, it's a nice bed, innit." "Nah, it's normally pretty soft."), so you decided to stop altogether.
When you reached the front door, the rest of the band was waiting. Noodle acted first, giving you a hug "Sayonara!" You wished her farewell in return.
Russel was next and gave you a bear hug. "Don't forget our agreement." He whispered into your ear. "Wouldn't dream of it." You whisper back.
You hold out your hand for Murdoc to shake, but he just scoffs, so you move on to 2D.
"I'm going to miss you."
"I'll miss yew more, love!" He gave you a tight squeeze. You two were slow to pull away, but when you did, you caught sight of tears in his eyes that matched your own. He hands you something. "'ere's me number so yew can call."
"This won't be the last you hear from me, D." And with that, you got back into your rusty company car and left Kong Studios, but couldn't leave behind the thought of a blue-haired singer.
Does Virgil from Weightless ever find his skin? It’s one of my favourite fics from you and I’d love to read what happens after!
Oof, okay so in Weightless, Virgil does find his skin! I won’t write it, purely because I don’t have the time :/// but I can give you some run downs of what would happen!!
((This is still longer than I meant it to be oh my god))
First order of business is Patton uses some of his djinn magic to locate a magic shop which is run by a pixie who calls himself Deceit and whom absolutely abhors Patton. He’s sympathetic to Virgil’s cause but he runs a business so in exchange for an actual locating spell that works on people from memory he needs something just as powerful in return.
Logan steps up and offers a bit of his blood-- him being part gorgon gives him potent blood that is definitely is rare. Deceit eyes him warily but accepts it and he gives Virgil the spell.
((Deceit also reveals the secret that Patton’s been hiding while they’re there: as a Djinn he can’t disobey any order. Which is why he’s always being so helpful and when the others ask him to do basic things he drops whatever he’s doing to complete the task. It also includes things such as “Don’t listen to this conversation until I snap my fingers” while Deceit does just because he’s petty and can.))
While they were out though, their house got broken into and its no longer safe at home, so Roman cashes in a favor with his brother in order for them to have a place to crash. Logan and Patton go over the spell with Virgil which requires the user of it to fall to sleep before its activated. Remus and Roman have a heart to heart which turns into Roman coughing up blood and his own secret being revealed: the reason why Roman acts so scattered brained and often has a hard time thinking about the others is because he quite literally can’t stop thinking about having sex, and if he goes too long without engaging in it his body starts breaking down. He was cursed as a young adult by a vengeful witch who thought they were dating when he thought they were just friends....who sometimes slept together.
((He knows its not an excuse for him acting like that, which is why he never mentioned it to anyone, but also why he’s always seeking out partners and even though he’s an incubus, he thinks if he never had sex again he’d be okay. ))
Virgil sleeps and the spell works and when he wakes up Logan hands him a map and in a trance-like state marks with a pen where his attackers are.
Remus is really excited to see an opportunity to beat up people so he comes with them to confront the guys. The attackers turn out to be a from a low level gang so there are a lot of them and turns out there were people watching them when they left Deceit’s place, the gang over powered him and dragged him out to their warehouse where they were were in the process of ripping out his wings.
And Remus completely ignores any “don’t kill” suggestions and goes right to ripping out some throats the second he sees any magical creature being tortured like that. Roman isn’t far behind them and Patton uses his magic to help free Deceit and try to heal the places where his wings were damaged. Virgil breaks the water pipes and use his water manipulating ability to defend Patton and Deceit.
((Patton reveals here that the reason why Deceit hates him so much is because he knows Deceit’s true name, which gives him absolutely control over the pixie, but Patton uses it to make Deceit stay awake through the pain, as he lost a lot of blood and if he fell unconscious now he probably wouldn’t wake back up))
Logan curbs enough of Roman and Remus’s rage to save one of the gang in order to ask him what happened to the selkie skin they stole, (and the gang member looks around at all his dead friends and asks “a skin was worth all this?” and Logan asks him, “Did you not think you were ruining lives by taking things that weren’t yours? Did you truly think no one was hurt by your actions?”)
The gang member admits they don’t have the skin, but that they sold it to these collectors: the Ackroyds, who paid them really well for it, you see? They had all sort of freaky things in their collection and he’d take a skin but he wouldn’t like kill the things and put them on display like those humans do.
And Logan freezes up at the name, noticeably, but the man is hysterical with trying to prove that he’s not really that bad, and before anyone can do anything, Logan takes off his glasses and turns the man to stone.
He puts them back on immediately but steps away from the group and refuses to look at them. He tells them that the skin is a lost cause and that they should give up.
To which Virgil is audibly horrified and angry because they got this far!! And Logan promised him--!! and Logan whips around and tells him that he never made any such promises and that if Virgil doesn’t let it go he’ll turn Virgil to stone as well, because he won’t like Virgil drag all his friends to their dooms.
At which, Deceit laughs brokenly, and asks if Logan go to attempt to make his own collection just like his parents--
And Logan’s secret comes to light: he wasn’t always part gorgon. He was actually human and his parents are mythical creature collectors but they collected creatures like butterflies: killing and pinning them in glass cases. But they often found that some creatures were immune to dying in ways that didn’t desecrate their bodies. Their solution? Find a way to make them ever lasting statues, using their son and a very expensive, unrepeatable experiment.
Logan admits that he remembers the faces of every person that his parents forced him to kill, of everyone who meets his eyes. Its his curse, and he’s always been afraid of it, because one day...he always knew that he’d join their collection too. He ran away as soon as he could, but his parents had people track him down and he was dragged back to them and they began to lock him in his room, and he was not allow out of the house at all anymore. Logan managed to escape by chance just before his sixteenth birthday.
By the time he’s finished talking he’s shaking and his knees give out but Remus is there to catch him and no one knows what to say about anything.
“I can’t...” Logan whispers, “I can’t let you go there. I can’t... please... anyone who goes there doesn’t.....get out...”
And surprisingly its Roman who speaks up, strangely blithely about it all, “Well, they were always alone, weren’t they? Hey, Specs, don’t you know you aren’t alone, anymore?”
And it turns into a rallying thing where the six of them agree that they have each other, and that they can work together to take down Logan’s parents and keep any more mythical creatures from dying at their hands. I don’t have the actual final battle thing planned out so the rest of this is really but scratched out notes and concepts that if i were actually writing this, would be subject to change according to where the plot goes.
They infiltrate first by using Virgil’s selkie rareness to draw the attention of the Ackroyds.
Unfortunately the Ackroyds are expecting them so they kinda all stumble into a trap and Logan is taken back by his parents for-- and what great timing this is! They have a new rare species!! An archangel who would look magnificent next to the Avians!
((The archangel is like eight. His name is Thomas and he’s sobbing because he doesn’t know how to use his powers yet.))
But first, its a good thing to take care of the meddling monsters that Logan had first become friends with. Starting with that selkie! And because they want him to look picture perfect even as stone they get his skin and tell him that if he cooperates they’ll let the djinn and the incubi go free (the pixie has to stay though. Its another rarity).
And well.
Virgil has been holding on to a secret too.
He’s actually the goddamn Prince of the entire fucking sea and his power is linked to his skin.
Which means that when they put the skin back on him, his abilities increase about 100fold. We stan OP Virgil in this house. Remind me how much of humans is water again? Yeah. Virgil drowns them in their own bodies and frees everyone else.
The Ackroyds have like a lot of people working for them though, so theres a battle that happens and in the middle of it Logan’s glasses get knocked off and broken and Thomas throws himself in front of Logan. Which, because Logan’s gorgon eyes are the same as staring into someone’s soul, leads to Logan staring into Thomas’s divine soul and it literally burns and blinds him.
((Thomas is really sorry, but Logan just starts sobbing thank yous to this eight year old, because now he’s never going to be forced to kill someone else.))
Our heroes win!! The Ackroyds are finished. Patton and Deceit put aside their differences in order to take joint custody of babey archangel Thomas and they, along with Roman and Logan end up living in a beach house together while researching how to remove the curse that’s on Roman. Remus comes and goes, bringing back exotic podcasts for Logan to listen too and bringing news from other locations about monster hunting.
Logan broke into his family vault and took all the money that his parents made off of selling and exploiting creatures and used it all to finance mythical creatures safehouses all across the globe. He trusts Remus and Roman to help watch over them.
Virgil returns to the ocean, just like Logan said he would at the very beginning of the story, although its because he has prince duties to adhere too. And he still sneaks up every once in a while to have dinner with all of them because I’m weak and soft for found family.
