this is a long video but it popped up on my feed and i thought it was quite interesting, (she shares some videos in the description too i want to link directly: a shorter video/tiktok summarizing the topic, and another tiktok stitched in response that digs in a little deeper) and is kinda relevant with some of the things i've been talking about with DA, though this discussion is specific to monster romance + "cozy" fantasy and how a lot of these stories use d&d or tolkien as the foundation of their worldbuilding with little thought and without understanding the harmful, racist stereotypes it perpetuates..... and of course these are just prevalent tropes across the fantasy genre as a whole, whether inspired by d&d and tolkien or otherwise (as we've seen in DA). i really like the quote from the substack article she links by Michael LaBron, i feel like it makes it very obvious how these depictions are directly connected: "In the same way that Orcs create a boogy man that justify the hero's violence, sexy Orcs create a monster that the damsel in distress doesn’t actually have to be afraid of."

the other article i shared previously really expanded the first half of that quote with the "civilization versus savages" binary that we see with a lot of fantasy races (orcs, goblins, drow, and qunari in dragon age) but i think this half of the discussion is important to have as well so i just wanted to share. here is the article by Michael LaBron:

i love fantasy, it's my favorite genre, it's what i personally write for myself, and i think learning about and discussing the flaws within the genre are an important and integral part of enjoying it, too, which is why i've been discussing it so much with veilguard, and i wanted to share more examples as this discussion has become relevant in a lot of spaces right now outside of just gaming/RPGs/TTRPGs.

Thinking about geto because I want to pour milk on him and throw him against the wall. Imo his beliefs are inconsistent and self serving (which makes sense because he developed said beliefs at age 16/17 while his mental health was at an all time low). Because while he seems to have the primary motive of "only sorcerers = no curses" taking into account how he treats Maki, who has no cursed energy, it shows that the "no curses" thing isnt the main focus- bc while he decided on tbe "forced evolution" thing, theoretically he should not be Opposed to ppl w heavenly restriction bc. They still fuckin. Don't contribute to curses from what I can tell. Also heavenly restriction is pretty obviously something that is punished by uh. Is it just the Zenin's who have it. Anyway they hated Maki and they Hated Toji so he clearly isn't standing for "oppressed sorcerers" bc if so Maki should be like. The kind of person he wants to help more, as someone who would be oppressed by ppl who aren't sorcerers as well as the powerful clans.

Anyway. While getting rid of curses is for sure part of his motivation, as well as helping sorcerers (see Nanako and Mimiko) id honestly argue that his main problem that lead to him spiraling was. How do I put this. Being knocked off a pedestal

Because he was one of 3 people given the ranking of "Special Grade", and he and satoru are grouped as "the strongest". And consider that satoru comes from a powerful clan and literally has some weird omniscience and invincibility shit going on so that's a whole fucking. That's gotta be a wild ego boost, especially for someone who comes from a family of ppl who aren't sorcerers. Like you spend all this time being a fuckin weirdo and then someone finds you and it turns out you're actually incredibly special and strong, given the same rank as a fucking God Child? You're gonna have some wild self perceptions after that

Anyway then you get to watch your invincible friend get stabbed, watch the girl you became friends with and feel shitty about kinda ruining the life of get shot, and get your whole shit rocked by some guy who can't even use the magic power bullshit you have. (Though he's got a whole physical thing going on because of the trade off)

Also writing all of this out actually makes me understand the Cult Leader progression more, like besides the fact they killed ur friend and you want em dead. You're probably struggling with your ego (especially since your weird God like friend got a whole power boost from the situation) so you create a fucking eugenicist cult where you can consistently prove your superiority to yourself (surrounding yourself with people who will agree with everything you say).

Anyway in a similar vein I wholely believe in "a loving father is not inherently a good father" Suguru + Nanako & Mimiko dynamic

Final thought is roughly I feel like looking at Suguru thru the lense of "this character had a level of privilege that they felt they truly deserved, and after experiencing events that are genuinely traumatic and horrific for any person, they develop reactionary beliefs to try and regain a sense of superiority and control" rather than "oppressed minority who killed oppressors and wants to do eugenics"

Unless you're a very specific kind of person, the kind of structures you find predicated on voluntarism will burn anyone out, sooner or later, because the work cycle consists of riding between waves of reactivity and then suffering a lot inbetween because there is no real unified or disciplined sense of organized political work. If you predicate action on purely defensive means, when there is nothing to defend against that will draw people in your whole organization falls apart at the seams. Like I'm sorry to say but if you're not in an actually defined structure with its own specific program that is able to work towards that with its own regular strength, you will burn out. Democratic centralism or similar enough structures are not burnout-proof of course, and they allow for their own specific ways to burn out, but it's not baked into the logic of the very structure

Trafalgar D. Water Law; Boy or Girl SO Preference?

If you look at Flevance, they resemble a typical small Christian community, even if it isn’t explicitly stated. There were religious crosses, nuns, churches. There was most definitely a theme in Flevance’s religion about hope and the good in others, as the nun that Law sees says smth like, “There’s always a hand to help you.”

Flevance also had a high status of wealth (the whole diamond scheme) and the average cost of living/luxury of the average person was reasonably high. There vastly majority of the couple in Flevance were also probably traditionally monogamous, with one man and one woman.

I think if Law had grown up in Flevance his romantic interests would solely be focused on a female partner bc that would be the socially acceptable way and he wouldn’t view males in the perspective of a potential suitor. (Idk if this is recent interpretations of the Bible or not but it’s realistic to say that there would be stigmatism surrounding same sex couples in Flevance as most traditional believers of Christianity view same sex romantic relationships as ‘wrong ish’. At least where I live..)

However, the destruction of Flevance brought change to Law’s character and perception of love. Because of this and his loss of faith from this experience, I think adult pirate Law would be more willing to engage in a same sex relationship. (Would actually be a good writing moment made by Oda if it did happen imo but I digress)

I don’t ship LawLu, but I think Luffy is a real example of the type of person that could help Law heal and has aspects of what Law would need in a relationship. LawLu is good on a companionship/spiritual level imo but sexually/potentially romantically I do not see it at all being reciprocated by either Law or Luffy.

Just the fact someone like Luffy exists that had met Law is a good argument for Law being with a male, just not Luffy specifically.

Law’s significant other to me represents stability, safety, and humanity. This can manifest in people differently though so I don’t see him looking for something based on physicality.

Because of that I don’t see Law in canon having a preference between boy or girl for a partner. Perhaps a leaning towards female because that’s the traditional way of his hometown and in the One Piece world it seems like.

He’d need someone emotionally before he’d need them sexually imo, so if he found someone that worked for him and he was ready, that’s it no matter the gender.

Sexually he would probably be more attracted to females, and a lot of times sexual tension is mistaken for romantic tension but I don’t see Law acting upon either.

Hate to leave this discussion without giving u a definite answer anon but I just don’t think there is a definite answer yk.

My personal preference tho is him with a female because I see him falling for someone with a strong maternal presence. Yk little instincts and gestures they do towards him and the crew that sometimes make them sigh ‘okay mom’ while drawing out the ‘o’ in mom. Someone that reminds him of the feeling of safety and peace he felt as a kid in Flevance where his body wasn’t so tense all the time.

🧡: What is a popular (serious) theory you disagree with? ok, so i don't really know if these count as theories or just general opinions, but- firstly, this is mentioned a lot, but i also don't think the prank was all that big of a deal. not glorifying it, but there was definitely a power dynamic among the marauders, and i frankly don't think remus had the option to be upset. obviously the 3 of them literally underwent an illegal, dangerous and extremely difficult transformation for him, and then continued to endanger themselves monthly for his sake, but also they knew a secret of his that would likely ruin any prospect of a future for him if out, and even though we know they would never use that against him, and he probably knew too, i just don't think that he would show his anger even if he held any. and, also he was a pushover and generally subservient to them, so. and moreover, i DEFINITELY don't think james would've been upset with sirius for this. not even a little. and i do think sirius would've held some guilt over it, but more about the fact that james had had to endanger himself to rectify the mistake. plus it's mentioned a bit off handedly in canon and uhh yeah

then secondly, i have. a lot of doubts abt the whole slytherin skittle or whatever gang fanon. firstly, not. making dorcas and pandora engage with them positively. i don't oppose the idea that pandora could've been evan rosier's sister, coming from a dark family could make her even more interesting as a character, even though i don't know where the hc came from, but if so the dynamic would NOT have been how people portray it. she would've despised him pls. from the depths of her being she would've wanted him to die.

i really think a lot of people don't understand the political atmosphere during the marauders era. it wasn't even just tension like portrayed during or leading upto the 2nd war, they were actively engaged in a state of war! people couldn't be friends if they had different political opinions! they wanted eachother dead! school students who were DEs were involved in racially discriminative murders, or condoning them, + were canonically torturing muggleborns. so i don't subscribe to this idea that the marauders and the 'skittles' just had a funny amount of animosity between them. they were not interacting in any way unless it was with wands drawn.
