Dick kept his name because he loved his parents. He was born a Grayson, he was their son, after all. His parents taught him how to fly, taught him how to fall. When he was younger, he was afraid of the distance between him and his parents that grew with every moment that passed since their deaths, fear the day where he had lived longer without them than he had with them. But he knows now that there is no distance at all. He was born a Grayson, and that is who he is.

Jason has always been Todd. He keeps it to remember. The woman who tried, sure, who made the best out of their circumstances, but also to remember those circumstances. He was never going to be a bougie Bristol kid, he was a street rat with a temper and an axe to grind. It reminds him of where he came from and of why he does this, and simply of himself. It isn’t that his mom or dad were Todd, but he is, always has been, Jason Todd. That’s the kid who fended for himself, that’s the kid who taught battle after battle to drag himself to where he is today. And he is never letting that go.

For Tim? It’s simple. Drake is power. He doesn’t keep it for the sake of his parents, because coming to terms with the knowledge that they tried is coming to terms with the knowledge that they failed. They loved him, they never hated him, but they weren’t really meant to be parents. But Drake has been at the top of a lot of important papers, a lot of checks, a lot of buildings. Drake reminds everyone else of where he came from, reminds every person who sees him when he steps into the gala that he has sole control of Jack Drake’s legacy, that he was raised and taught by Janet Drake. Drake is a knife he wields, against the press and the elites and everyone who comes at his family, and he wields it very well.

Cass doesn’t need a reminder of were she came from, of who raised her. She’ll never forget. But the tabloids don’t know. The public who know exactly where Dick and Jason and Tim came from have no idea what Cain means. They speculate an affair, a foreign trade, witness protection. It’s an inside joke for Cass, genuinely. It makes her laugh. Knowing that if anyone ever knew where Cain came from, they would be far too afraid to speculate or gossip.

Duke combines a lot of Dick and Jason. He will never let go of the name that belongs to his parents, who raised him and loved him and who he will always love. But the Thomas family helped Batman himself, when they were just a couple with a kid living in a two-bedroom apartment. And the Thomas kid joined the Robin movement, changed the game, saved lives and protected his city. Duke Thomas became a hero all on his own, before he got roped into the vigilante family that presides over Gotham.

Damian doesn’t hyphenate his name. Because Al Ghul is not his mother, who did try, who did want what was best for him, it is his grandfather. It is Ra’s Al Ghul, who tortured his mother in some ways and his father in others, who still targets their family, who tried to destroy his family. Al Ghul is a killer, an assassin, who lives and breathes and is blood, is death. And that’s not what Damian is, not anymore. Maybe he never was. After all, who the hell is who they are when they’re ten? Damian is a Wayne. Because of his father who is a hero. Because his siblings, Dick, Jason, Tim, Cass, and Duke, are Waynes. Because this is is family and this is who he wants to be.

Alex: What is the most rewarding aspect of this work for you? Which helps the grief of seeing this mass destruction.

Alyssa: Obviously it's really cool to work with wildlife, I've got to be honest, but, I also have to be honest that that's what I thought would be the most rewarding, but in reality it is working with the people.

It's working with researchers and managers and homeowners that have bats in their attic. It's working with people that actually care.

I literally will get a phone call from someone who says, "I have bats in my attic, I can't stand them, they're ugly and disgusting and I'm terrified, I'm sleeping in a hotel and I want to sell my house!" People have said all these things to me... And then there's this pause. And they say, "But, I know they're in trouble, and I don't wanna hurt them."

at a bar with friends, a man puts his hand on my wrist. got a boyfriend? and yes, i do have a boyfriend, she's amazing. i am texting her while i wander around a gas station named after geese. i am visiting a swing state for a wedding. in the candy aisle i overhear: she's actually like a lesbian it's disgusting. two teenage girls with packaged sandwiches in their hands, giggling. no literally, like. i'm not, like. okay with her being there while we're all, like, naked and changing.

my girlfriend and i tailgate, drink gin and cider out of cups. from the frat group beside us, a man corrects himself with one of his friends: bro, i mean, nonbinary entity, and it makes everyone around him laugh, myself included. he razzes his friend the same way i would have killed for at 19 years old - like nothing happened, he continues: you apply sunscreen like an alien. he does a little sassy (and fairly accurate) dance interpretation of the motion. his friend is laughing so hard they're crying.

i am lucky, i live in a safe neighborhood in a safe state. my masc passenger princess comes up from DC. i drive her for an hour to where all the leaves are a violent arrangement of color. we walk along the trails, letting autumn into our blood. in this part of the state, there's a lot of pickup trucks and trump signs. when we chastely kiss before getting into the car, i accidentally make eye contact with a woman holding her child's wrist. she looks disgusted. she looks fucking pissed.

two hours later my girl and i are eating dinner on a patio, soaking in the last warmth of new england sun before the chill of winter sets in. we are giggling and trying to talk through plastic vampire teeth. at another table, i see a young woman sit up straighter. i watch her watch us. she blushes and takes her partner's hand from across the table. shy, like the taste of evening has just become something deeper.

it's worth it for this moment, i think. my lover is still humming the same song she's been singing for four days straight and i don't want to kill her for it. her guitar is beside my bed. her toothbrush is in my bathroom. in a few moments i will make us lunch. we are lucky enough to have found each other. it is lucky enough to be in love.

Batman gives each of his Robins a different code to use when they’re in trouble and need immediate extraction. He promises that when they call, he’ll drop everything just to get to them, come hell or high water.

Jason, during his time with the League, shares his code with Damian, to be used “only in the direst of circumstances, when you have exhausted all other options.” He doesn’t know if Bruce will answer, given how fractured their relationship was before he died, but it is better than nothing. Every tool counts when they live such dangerous lives.

Damian uses it exactly once, and Bruce, who still feels the loss of his son like a yawning chasm in his chest, responds to it even though he knows it can’t be Jason because Jason’s dead. What he finds, instead of Jason, is a boy in League garbs, drenched in blood from the tips of his midnight-black hair to his too-small feet, with a face that Bruce sees himself and Talia in, requesting asylum from a grandfather who wishes to possess his body. Bruce doesn’t question how this boy who is so clearly his son knew the code. Talia al Ghul is resourceful and places family above all; the code is not beyond her abilities to discover, and she is not above using Bruce’s desperate love for his dead son to ensure that hers does not meet the same fate.

Bruce takes Damian in, because of course he does, and since Jason is dead he allows Damian to keep using the code. After all, it’s not like Jason is alive to use it, right? If someone uses the code, there’s no one it could be but Damian, right?

The next time the code is used, Bruce traces the location to Gotham even though Damian was supposed to be in Bludhaven visiting Dick. But whatever happened that resulted in Damian being in Gotham can wait, because he has already failed one son and he will not fail another, his son is in trouble and he needs to get to him, he needs to—

What he finds, instead of Damian, is a boy (just eighteen, too young, but also too old, but also he will always be a boy to him) in League garbs, drenched in blood from the tips of his midnight-black hair to his too-large feet (when had he gotten so big), wearing the face of his dead son.

(Who, maybe, just maybe, may no longer be so dead.)
