Baby MC: *learning to stand and walk*
Deuce: B-Be careful, Baby Rosehearts!
Trey: That's great. Keep going. One step at a time.
Riddle: *passes by to get something*
Baby MC: *went on all fours and crawls after their brother*
Trey: *sigh* Riddle, you've interrupted them.
Riddle: Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to.
Baby MC: *stands just to hug his leg*
Trey: Anyway, are you going to have a meeting again?
Riddle: Yes. Professor Crewel wants us to finalize some costume designs designated to each dorm.
Riddle: It's going to be a long discussion. Would you mind watching my baby sibling for me?
Baby MC: *starts whining*
Trey: *laughs* I think they want to go with you.
Riddle: *frowning a little* But Malleus-senpai will be there.
Deuce: Huh? Why? Is there a problem with Malleus-senpai?
Riddle: Last time, MC grabbed his horns and I was sure Malleus-senpai disliked that.
Trey and Deuce: Oh...
Deuce: Yeah... Babies have this herculean grip after all.
Riddle: So MC is staying here. And make sure they'll be entertained while I'm gone. Is that clear?
Trey and Deuce: Yes, housewarden!
Vil: You didn't bring the baby?
Riddle: Yes. I left them at the dorm.
Malleus: What a pity. I've brought some toys for them.
Riddle: ...
Azul: Excuse me, senpai... But that doesn't seem to be suited for kids...
Malleus: What do you mean?
Leona: They're all spikes, you damn idiot.
Malleus: Hm. But I used to play with these.
Kalim: Haha! I wonder what it's like playing with spikes!
Idia: Injured-max 100.
Azul: Anyway, Professor Crewel seems to be late.
Professor Crewel: *entering with Baby MC in his arms*
Baby MC: *starts bouncing after they see Riddle*
Professor Crewel: Behave. Riddle Rosehearts, were you not aware that your baby sibling tried following you here?
Riddle: ...
Riddle: I'm sure I had asked my vice-housewarden and the other Heartslabyul students to watch over them.
Professor Crewel: I see. Then your baby sibling is already a misbehaving puppy. *pokes their cheek*
Baby MC: *giggles*
Malleus: Crewel, were you late because you took time to dress up the little child of man?
Professor Crewel: I had to sew some fabric, of course.
Professor Crewel: *putting Baby MC down*
Baby MC: *about to crawl*
Professor Crewel: No, no. You walk. That fabric is expensive and you're not wiping the floor with it.
Baby MC: *giggles* *stands and toddles slowly to Riddle*
Riddle: *carries them up* *frowning* Did you escape from the dorm?
Baby MC: Heh~~
Idia and Kalim: Pffft!
Malleus: Hello, little child of man.
Baby MC: Yayo~! *holds and shakes his pinky finger*
Vil: Malleus, don't even think about giving those toys to them.
Malleus: *frowns* Who said I would?
Trey: I'm sorry, Riddle. I thought they've gone to sleep not until Deuce panicked, saying they were not in their room.
Deuce: It's okay if you don't accept our apology, sir!
Riddle: *sigh* No, it's fine. I called mother. She did say that it was one of her problems when it comes to MC.
Riddle: They'll find a way to go to you. It happened once with her and MC managed to locate where she was working at.
Trey: ...
Trey: That seems like a silly story, Riddle.
Riddle: *gets his phone and shows them a video*
*Baby MC being carried by random people while wearing the ID of their mother*
Trey and Deuce: ...
Riddle: I need some sort of tracking device for them.

Im an aspiring punk here ive wanting to start making my own stuff maby start a batle jacket or patch pants or somthing but those projects sound a bit intimidating. Do you have any recmondations on a good place to start?
hey ey!
to begin sorry for the late reply, i got a lot going on currently
to begin id advise collecting inspo for what kinda jackets/pants you want first. i use pinterest, tumblr and etsy to find inspo for my diy stuff. i like to sketch out different designs for my projects before making them, so i can try out what fits and what doesnt.
to practice id say starting by making patches and sewing them (use dental floss, its cheap and incredibly strong and durable) on for example a bag is the simplest way to introduce urself to patchmaking and sewing. i advise using the whip stitch to sew them on. when youre a bit more confident in ur skill level one of the easiest projects to start is a battlevest, since its mostly flat and straight fabric its easy to sew on and modify. most people find denim more difficult to sew on cause of its sturdiness but i prefer it for exactly that quality, it prevents the fabric from moving/stretching too much
you dont need expensive supplies, even stuff that might be seen as trash is very useful for punk diys, some old cloths and acrylic/fabric paint will already be enough for patches. i got a tutorial on my blog for stenciling them (let me know if you want me to link it). soda tabs can be used to make buttons/pins, chainmail, chains, and so much more. bottlecaps can also be made into different types of buttons/pins and chains (and more stuff i cant think of rn). you can get chains for cheap from hardware stores, id also keep an eye out for those chain dog collars in yardsales and such, theyre often very good quality (i got 3 all secondhand).
on that note, where can you find ur stuff for projects?? i get almost all my stuff secondhand. ive got at least 4 thriftstores nearby, and there are often fleamarkets around my area, which i always try to go to when i have the chance. fleamarkets are often announced in local newspapers or on posters around town. you might also find em by googling ur towns name and then "fleamarket" or "yardsale". if you live in a remote area where these things just dont exist i advise asking family/friends if they got old stuff they wanna get rid off. or to use online secondhand stores like vinted or depop (altho depop sellers often overprice, keep an eye out for cheap deals) for stuff you really cant get secondhand like spikes etc. i advise etsy. also if youre US based studsandspikes.com has tons of different spikes for cheap.
an important thing to remember is that your stuff wont and doesnt have to look perfect. your stuff will be messy and sometimes a project totally doesnt end up how you want and thats okay. fuck around and find out!

〚 Allotted Time 〛 MDNI (Part 1)
• An inspired Gyutaro x OC (Rasshu) NSFW Fic + SFW Pic
• Based off of the complete fanfiction "The Last Breath of Bravery”
• NSFW: Consenting, tender, light taunting, graphic visualization, gore, dismembering.
• Both featured characters are 20+
Tumblr media
〚 Setting & Feel 〛
Way back in the Meiji Period where Rasshu kept Gyutaro and his nefarious actions at bay, she would do small things for the low maintenance demon to keep him content his confinement.
〚 Allotted Time 〛
The evening sun is beginning to set as the bronzed skinned Hashira watches the pink clouds shift into the beautiful sunset sky. Unusually, she wears a red dress instead of her iconic slaying uniform that shes always seen in. Her short hair seems perky as a fresh scent emits from it. This hashira must be off from duty it seems.
As she stands, enjoying the remaining sun rays and then she finally goes back inside her house. Walking past the living room, she spots her messenger crow ruffled snuggly into a scarf on the floor resting. With a gentle nod, she kneels down and sits on a wooden ledge in her home as she pulls a freshly cleaned dark res fabric. Padding it out on her lap, she picks up a near by needle and finishes what she started early on.
-
As the woman finishes up sewing, a low grumble emits from under the floor boards as gentle but heavy footsteps vibrate the foundation slightly. With a smile, the hashira looks at the basement door creak open as a large ugly demon creeps out into the soft shade. His hair is messier than usual and he’s nearly naked as a lousy pair of pants hang from his hips. He grunts as he rubs his bare neck, looking at the fabric the woman has. Then with a raspy grunting voice, the unsettling demon speaks;
Gyutaro: Evenin… Gnah… Rasshu, are ye really fixing my crap… i dont need you to waste your time doing that.
Rasshu: Calm down, geez… its no sweat off my back you know? I dont mind doing this for you regardless, i know it’s something you keep close afterall…
Gyutaro: *grunt* It just baffles me that you waste your time doing something that i couldn’t even notice to begin with. If it broke, id just get a new one or something
Rasshu: Well well, i hope that if i break, i hope you wouldn’t get a new one of me. I am pretty rare to begin with
Gyutaro: Well if you didnt go slaying my KIND each damned day i would have to worry about replacing your ass so soon would I. One day i wont-
Rasshu: “One day i wont be there to protect and save your ass” I know, I know… its my job sweety, im grateful that I can spare and sustain you… that being said, todays the day to feee you right?
Gyutaro: Yeah but demons like me can last years without eating as much as you feed me. I know this meat gets expensive, i can hold off for longer than you think-
Rasshu: Gyutaro, i can afford to keep you content; not just to keep you alive.
After an unsettling silence, Rasshu stands up and kisses Gyutaro on his grimy forehead. Leaving the demon watching the sleeping crow on the ground. Departing into a room with a heavy door, Rasshu puts on an apron and dawns a dull look as she closes the door behind her. Its time to prepare Gyutaro’s food for this month.
Opening an old box, an assortment of dried meat and herbs decorated the interior as a nearly new beheaded human body was wrapped in large leaves. The body had a large bruise around its neck, presumably being killed in an accident. Rasshu’s eyes drift over the body as she gets a firm grasp on it and drags it onto a table. The hashira seems unbothered by the sight of such a fragile body as she brings down a mallet onto the knees and legs! Cracking the bones enough for her to cut through the flesh and bone without a hitch. Slicing the body up into manageable parts, the blood seeps into the towel under the body.
After some hard work, the body was finally without limbs and now it was just a chest and torso of a stranger. Carefully splitting the skin down the middle of the abdomen , the woman was able to take out the main organs without rupturing anything too major. This was what a demon really needed to eat to keep their power and energy in check, or at least thats what Rasshu could observe throughout the years. But finally, she was done as she wrung the blood soaked towel out into the bowl.
-
The sound of a door closing made the demon perk up as he patiently sat on the ledge watching the bird that was in a deep sleep by now. His yellow red eyes let off a feint a glow as he watched the hashira come out of the room holding a bowl and a sack of limbs. It was something of a routine by now but Rasshu could never get used to how Gyutaro would react to the smell of fresh blood when hungry; as the demon would hunch down more as he walked with restraint. Drips of drool pattered on the floor as he stood over the hashira, dipping his hand into the bowl and taking out a firm kidney. Biting into the blood filled organ, he groaned with some sort of satisfaction as he began to eat feverishly! Taking no signs to show manners as blood tricked down his neck as he ate his fill. During this time, Rasshu would hold his food to prevent him from going full on savage, as he wouldn’t dare attack her in this state either. And eventually, after he crunched down on the thick raw bones; ingesting the last of the bodies nutrients, he calmed down.

weird fact, prized possession, aesthetic, and outfit!
!!!! ty <3
🙃 What’s a weird fact that you know?
oh GOD im terrible with these- and i feel like its a cop out to say something about sewing for me!
have you heard of stereoscopes? they were essentially our first 3d image devices! you they were designed to show each eye a slightly different image to create a very basic 3d effect! the victorians were Super into these and made a TON of pictures you can still find out there today :)
💎 What’s your most prized possession?
oooh so many options depending on how you wanna quantify it!! my childhood teddy bear who i couldnt live without, my beloved plant child whos been alive long enough to completely take over my windowsill, my very fancy expensive fabric shears <3 theyre all irreplaceable to me in their own ways, so very important! (ive got a lot of other things that are important to me but ! these stand out in a way)
🐸 Describe your aesthetic.
(i took this to mean a fashion aesthetic, but other options exist too!)
i like to refer to it as the unholy offspring of a 50's housewife and a gothic vampire '''':D basically, a lotta full skirts and 50s/lolita silhouettes going on, but always in black with maybe a bit of red & gold, and most importantly. lace and ruffles and a general elegance around it. to me. im trying to branch out a bit and wear other things too but i always come back to my general weird bitch look
🌿 Describe your favorite outfit.
it varies between a few pieces but at the moment id sayyyy the black tiered skirt i made with some kind of puffy ruffly blouse and probably a cropped cardigan thrown over! a corset on underneath and opaque black tights and ofc. the lesbian lace docs. a staple of any outfit for me

Late 1890s Corset Part 4 - Flossing and Wrap Up
July 22, 2021
Tumblr media
[Image ID: a neck-to-hips photo of Alex wearing a blue and ivory corset over a muslin shift.]
Part 1 - Research
Part 2 - Mockups
Part 3 - Construction
My 1890s corset is finally constructed and wearable, but it's not quite complete yet. It's time for some finishing touches!
Flossing
For the flossing, I used a silk buttonhole twist from B&T in a cream color that matches the lacing in the back and the lace I'll use to decorate the top edge of the corset later.
I started along the top edge of the boning with a simple crossed pattern, like these instructions from Sidney Eileen, but only doing two threads in each direction and... not going in the correct order. It turned out the same, so whatever I guess. My flossing here isn't perfect, but I wanted to get a feel for it in a place where I could cover my mistakes.
Should I have just done a test on some scrap fabric? Yes! Did I just jump in with no practice instead? Also yes!
While I do like the simplicity of the flossing design I used along the top, I wanted something a bit prettier for the bottom edge, since it'll be exposed.
I found this flossing design from 'Bridges on the Body,' a corset-sewing blog, and fell in love with it. (Seen on the far right in the photo at the end of the post.) I was afraid the design would be difficult, but it's really deceptively easy. I even followed the directions this time! It took a few attempts to get it perfect - figuring out the spacing and whathaveyou - but I had really nailed it by bone #5. (I have to say that it also looks really nice with fewer crisscrosses, too.)
I used a slightly altered version for the bones on either side of the lacing, and yet another variation on the busk. (The left two and second-to-right designs in the photo at the bottom.)
Lace
With the flossing done, I could attach some lace! In my stash I had a cream-colored, two-layered lace that had holes for ribbon along the top. I attached it using small, spaced-out stitches, with the more solid part of the lace (under the lacing holes) lined up right under the edge of the binding.
I found quarter-inch grosgrain ribbon in a similar shade of blue to the corset and threaded it through the lace. I secured the end to the binding at the lacing panels, and tacked the ribbon at a few more points to keep it upright. I left ribbon tails at the busk so I can tie a bow at the center front when I'm wearing the corset.
And then I was done! Completely, finally, 100% done.
Final Thoughts
I thought sewing a corset would be really difficult and take me all year to do, but it didn't. I started back in January and finished in June, and that includes long periods of inactivity. It's not perfect by a long shot, but I'm proud of my work and I've learned a lot.
This project was kind of expensive, though (at least by my standards). All told, I spent about $77 on this project. I could have saved a few dollars if I didn't buy way too much fabric (3 yards when I could have gotten 1.5 yards and still had extra) and an extra spool of thread, or if I opted for cotton embroidery floss instead of silk buttonhole thread. But I also could have spent a lot more if I had splurged on coutil instead of canvas. I'm doing a lot of stash-bushing this year, so I had room in my sewing budget.
So, what's next? While I do have some more late-Victorian projects planned (like combinations, a corset cover, padding/"enhancers", etc...), I'm headed back into the Regency for a while to do some stash busting and expand my wardrobe a bit. I also have a few small one-off, non-historical projects that need my attention too.
Stay warm. Stay safe. Stay healthy.
Tumblr media
[Image ID: a detail photo of four flossed areas of the corset, done in ivory silk thread on dusty blue canvas. The two on the right are on either side of the lacing, the third one is the bottom of the busk, and the last one on the left is an example of the flossing at the bottom of most bones.]

i will say that an imperfect garment is better than one u never started. honestly most of my garments are still not hemmed bc i tend to make oversized/loose clothing in thicker fabrics (lots of corduroy) that can handle some mild fraying.
I also work almost exclusively with second-hand fabric that has already been washed and warped as much as it will, plus if it is ruined at any point in the process I've not sunk as much money into it. It does mean that often I don't know the fibre content though (u can always perform a burn test to see if there's any polyester. cut a little section off and hold it over a flame, if it melts and looks like plastic it contains polyester/synthetic fibre).
u can always make adjustments after you've finished a garment. u can unpick or take it in or hem it at any point! even weeks, months, years later!
tailors chalk is id say the easiest to mark with, but if Ur in a pinch a bar of soap also works, u just need to sharpen it to draw a clean line.
starting simple is always a good idea but also if there's something u feel excited to make u can always go for it (maybe with cheaper fabrics though). My first proper project was a stage accurate Wicked cosplay of Elphaba's act 3 dress. If u know it u know that that was. Ambitious lol. It was wearable after a couple months work, but i wouldn't have called it finished for like 4 years, and I still haven't hemmed it djdjjdjdjd
Invest in a slightly more expensive (still only like $10) seam ripper with a proper handle, not one of the very small fiddly ones. Sewing will test Ur hands at every step so treat them nicely.
Linen is really expensive for me (in Australia) so if u can't afford it, go to thrift store and get a cheap sheet or curtain. They might be more likely to fray, but they're large and generally cheap fabric.
Collars are going to suck.
Sewing machines are designed to be used by regular people, they have many safety precautions in built. But it's always smart to thread the needle with the machine off, and to go slowly if Ur sewing over pins.
Invest in sewing clips for holding thicker fabrics together, it's so much easier than fighting with pins bc it's never going to sit flat.
pay attention to Ur iron settings and always test with an offcut of ur fabric. A piece of baking paper between the fabric and iron will stop a lot of ironing accidents.
A tailors ham is Ur best friend for ironing seams and curves and sleeves! It's maybe a little above beginner but I find them quite whimsical and they smell like sawdust
Things I wish I had read in "beginner" sewing tutorials/people had told me before I started getting into sewing
You have to hem *everything* eventually. Hemming isn't optional. (If you don't hem your cloth, it will start to fray. There are exceptions to this, like felt, but most cloth will.)
The type of cloth you choose for your project matters very much. Your clothing won't "fall right" if it's not the kind of stretchy/heavy/stiff as the one the tutorial assumes you will use.
Some types of cloth are very chill about fraying, some are very much not. Linen doesn't really give a fuck as long as you don't, like, throw it into the washing machine unhemmed (see below), whereas brocade yearns for entropy so, so much.
On that note: if you get new cloth: 1. hem its borders (or use a ripple stitch) 2. throw it in the washing machine on the setting that you plan to wash it going forward 3. iron it. You'll regret it, if you don't do it. If you don't hem, it'll thread. If you don't wash beforehand, the finished piece might warp in the first wash. If you don't iron it, it won't be nice and flat and all of your measuring and sewing will be off.
Sewing's first virtue is diligence, followed closely by patience. Measure three times before cutting. Check the symmetry every once in a while. If you can't concentrate anymore, stop. Yes, even if you're almost done.
The order in which you sew your garment's parts matters very much. Stick to the plan, but think ahead.
You'll probably be fine if you sew something on wrong - you can undo it with a seam ripper (get a seam ripper, they're cheap!)
You can use chalk to draw and write on the cloth.
Pick something made out of rectangles for your first project.
I recommend making something out of linen as a beginner project. It's nearly indestructible, barely threads and folds very neatly.
Collars are going to suck.
The sewing machine can't hurt you (probably). There is a guard for a reason and while the needle is very scary at first, if you do it right, your hands will be away from it at least 5 cm at any given time. Also the spoils of learning machine sewing are not to be underestimated. You will be SO fast.
I believe that's all - feel free to add unto it.

Fabric research
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After creating my spec, i needed to start looking into different fabrics i can use to my garment as close to the spec as possible.
I already knew the colour scheme which made things slightly easier for me.
The under skirt - White
The panels - Black
The top skirt - Red
The corset - Red
The top - Red
Apart from the colour scheme, i also knew i needed the fabric for the top to be quite think and sturdy so the pin tucks would hold in place. The underskirt needed to be quite light and floaty, and the fabric for the waistband on the top skirt needed to be thicker and sturdier.
Fabric Research
Cotton Drill - Cotton Drill is a mid-weight cotton fabric with a crisp white base. The fabric is strong in construction without being heavy or rigid, making it extremely versatile for range of apparel and interiors applications.
Cotton drill is a really good option for me especially for the top of my garment. Being a stronger lightweight fabric means it would hold really well with the pin tucks but its not heavy or thick enough for it to fall down under its own weight.
Tumblr media
Shirtings - Shirting fabric is a soft, plain fabric which is known to be quite easy to sew. It responds well to a variety of sewing techniques and isn't too expensive.
I think this would work nicely for my underskirt because it'll flow nicely and its super light making it easier to move about. The only thing id be worried about with this fabric is if it'll be see through or if it'll be able to hold all the panels because i'm not sure how strong it is as a fabric.
Velvet - Velvet is a type of woven fabric with a dense, even pile that gives it a distinctive soft feel. By extension, the word velvety means "smooth like velvet". Velvet was typically made from silk but today, velvet can be made from silk, linen, cotton, wool, synthetic fibers, silk-cotton blends, or synthetic-natural fiber blends.
Tumblr media
Silk - Silt is known as one of the most luxurious fabrics of all time. Its cool for the summer but warm for the winter. Its a really durable, strong fabric but is lightweight and soft. While this would work perfectly for the underskirt of my garment, Silk is quite expensive so I will be trying to find some other fabric that would work well before buying anything expensive.

#id study how this is due to fast fashion and the quickening pace of clothing trends lifted up then torn down by popular figures#as well as the inherent greed of companies abusing people who cannot afford higher quality clothing by selling them pure sludge to make#prices more desirable in this age of economic struggle but im not the right person to do that#still forever angry tho like WHY are modern clothes so Useless
Fast fashion is a symptom of the same problem (the more often they can get you to update your wardrobe, the better), but the cause is very simple -- shitty fabric is cheaper. Thinner fabric is cheaper, fabric with shorter fibre lengths is cheaper, the more plastic you can get in the fabric the cheaper it is, and paying the workers less per garment or increasing their quotas (thus forcing them to rush, skip double stitching, and overlook small defects) is cheaper. Getting as many clothing pieces out of as little fabric as possible, even if it means the warp and weft are at a weird angle, is cheaper. Not putting linings in clothing or reinforcing stress points is cheaper, so nothing has a lining or is properly reinforced any more. The company must get more profitable every year, so the goods must either be cheaper to acquire or more expensive to sell every year. It's just shrinkflation.
To a free market proponent this shouldn't be a problem, because if the clothes are too shitty then the customers will just buy from somewhere with better clothing and the problem will self-correct, right? Except that doesn't work when everyone is doing it. When every affordable chain store is putting out shittier, flimsier clothing for the same price every year, and when the fabric stores are selling equally shitty fabric (and only a minority of the customers would have time to sew anyway), and the op shops are full of shitty clothes abandoned by frustrated customers from the affordable chain stores, who else can the customer buy from? If the good quality clothing even exists in their area any more, if they can even save up to buy it, how are they to know where to find it? Expensive stuff is very often made of shitty bullshit that falls apart in two years too now. Reliable brands are constantly changing hands and becoming unreliable, four fifths of artisans out there carefully making high quality clothes are just dropshippers selling you the stuff that even kmart wouldn't take. It's not technically a monopoly but it has the same effect as one -- if you take away the customer's other options, you can exploit them as much as you want.
They're selling us shittier and shittier clothes every year... because they can.
I'm so pissed right now. I know that fabric has been declining in quality for a while but I just bought new pajamas from kmart and they are literally see through. Not just through one layer of fabric either; I can see through the leg, that is, through 2 layers of fabric. These aren't clothes. I am not exaggerating when I say that I have strained soup through cheesecloth thicker than these pants. These are men's flannel pajamas, the kind people wear in winter, and they are made if shittier thinner fabric than even the most bargain bin bullshit halloween costumes. This "flannel" feels like plastic and is thinner than a chux wipe. Why is this even for sale.

Sam signs up.

It's three minutes after midnight and there is blood on Sam’s hands.
It glimmers red under the neon shine of the streetlamps Sam hastes past.  His face is damp with tears and sweat. Tears that won’t dry even in the oppressive summer heat, they are falling too fast, too numerous. A well of pain flowing over.
I can’t do this anymore.
Sam’s hand throbs. Sam’s head throbs
His heart throbs.
I CAN’T DO THIS ANYMORE!
Somewhere in the distance a car alarm goes off.
He stumbles on the crossing into the nice part of town. The great hall of the central station is enclosed in thick steel beams and looms over Sam like the industrial carcass of a whale. It’s silvery bones illuminated by floodlights. Behind it, the fashion shops and restaurants of the city's shopping district tower high into the sky. Technicolored neon lights sparkle in their glass facades.
At the end of the currently deserted strip lies Sam’s goal. WRU.
Old sneakers against pavement. His footsteps echo between the empty buildings, growing faster, faster, in his haunted desperation.
If he slows down enough for the oxygen to catch up with his brain, long enough to think about this, to doubt this-
No!
He can’t chicken out. Not now. The blood on his hand has almost dried, color shifting from red to brown. It's too late to stop. All his dreams and aspirations, he smashed them up alongside his sewing machine. Ripped them apart as he shredded his midterm project to tiny pieces of golden fabric. Even if he had the money to re-buy the materials, replace his machine, there wasn’t enough time to re-do that dress from scratch.
Good! I don’t want this shit anyway. I just want out! Let me get out!
He bursts into Wru’s reception hall, its glass doors opening with a quiet ‘ding’.
The receptionist startles awake from where she’d dozed off behind the counter. Perfectly rose painted lips curve into an apologetic smile. She brushes a lock of honey blond hair back behind her ear.
“”How can I help you?”
Sam’s ragged breathing fills the silence between them as he just stares, for a moment. Suddenly remembering where he is, Sam straightens, fumbles with his shirt to make himself look half decent, not sweaty and flushed with his old cat shirt stuck to his back.
“Good-” he gulps down a breath. “Good evening. I, uhm, I wanna sign up.”
“Oh.” The receptionist musters him, eyes scanning him top to bottom. Sam’s face is burning from more than exertion now.
“Am I wrong here?”
“Oh, no no. It’s only- Are you of age?”
“Twentyone.” Sam mumbles, deflating with every second he stands in the shining emptiness of this fake marble hall. It had to be fake, right?
The woman smiles, pleasant but empty. "Alright. I do need your ID information for our records nonetheless and-” she put a clipboard and pen on the pristine counter, “These are some additional information we need for your check in.”
Check in.
As if signing your very life away was as easy as simply checking into a hotel. Three nights as a pet please. Yes, with breakfast and room service, thank you.
Suppressing a snort Sam fumbles his wallet out of his pocket and plugs his ID from it with shaking fingers. He holds it out to her, arm straining over the counter and on his tiptoes.
“Here.” He says, short but polite, before snatching the clipboard and pen from the counter.
“You can sit in our waiting area to fill this out.” She gestures to the right without looking up, already typing away one handed, eyes scanning his ID.
The area reminds Sam of a doctor's waiting room, only far more luxurious. Three leather couches stand around a low wooden table, dark and polished. Pet magazines are neatly laid atop it. The tv in the corner plays wru ads on mute. In the corner stands a water dispenser that looks more expensive than all of Sam’s possessions combined. If he would try to drink from it now, Sam knows he would throw up.
He sits down with a soft squeak of leather. The pen scratches over the paper with every word.
Known allergies: None.
Known  pre-existing illnesses: None.
He is halfway through the first sheet, medical history,  when the dialing of a phone number catches his attention.
“Yes. We have a new acquisition, yes. I need a handler to pick him up, finish the check in. Quickly. Yes.”
Why quickly? Sam finishes the first sheet in a scribbled hurry.
“Samantha Higgens?” Sam cringes at his deadname. Whatever, soon it’ll be gone for good right? “Have you informed family or friends about your decision?”
Sam bristles. “How’s that your business?”
She smiles, very patiently. “We offer a service to inform your bereaved about your choices and answer any questions they might have. Most people find it reassuring to know that no open questions remain for the people- that might have them.”
The people that might- worry about him. Miss him.
There is no oxygen left in Sam’s lungs, all of a sudden. The room is way too big and his hands are shrinking, skin too tight over his bones. His brain sloshes around inside his skull.
“No.” He hears himself say, voice high and tight. “I- I’ll text her myself.”
The elevator door dings and boots clip over the marble floor with each approaching step. Sam fumbles his phone out of his pocket, hands shaking so bad he nearly drops it.
Warm fingers steady his own.  When Sam looks up he finds himself face to face with a man near his forties, smiling down at him. He grips his phone tighter.
“There we go.” The man flops down next to him, eyes crinkling. “The last message, hm? I can’t imagine how brave you have to be to write those.”
“Huh?” Sam’s face crumbles in confusion, his impending panic attack stopped dead in its tracks. “Who, who are you?”
The man's brown eyes grow serious without losing their warmth. He is handsome in a way Sam rarely finds in a middle aged man. Dependable looking. Save. “I’m your primary handler. Call me Mister Wilson.”
Sam shakes his outstretched hand on instinct. “I’m- well that won’t really matter once this whole pet thing starts, right?”
Mister Wilson hums, pleased. “A quick learner I see. I think we will have a great time together. The smart ones are my favorite.”
Heat floods Sam’s face and he drops his gaze, pressing the start button on his phone repeatedly to do something with his hands.
Mister Wilson lets him fumble until his nervousness morphes back into despondency. He opens his messenger app, closes it again. Opens it. Closes it. Sam stalls for time and they both know it.
“Little one,” Mister Willsons begins softly, “you’ve gotta be brave one last time now. And after that, I promise you, you won’t have to worry about a thing.”
With a big sigh and his heart beating against his throat so violently he wonders if Mr Wislon can see it, Sam pulls up his aunt's chat. There are at least five voicemails she must have sent after Sam stormed out the door, after their fight. And after demolishing the room, she never stopped complaining about giving up for him.
Whatever is on there he won’t listen to it. They’re just gonna be a continuation of her never ending accusations anyway. Telling him what a burden he is. How he should give up his dreams of becoming a designer and get a proper job. Whenever she hits a bad mental health spot she turns into a broken record player of soul crushing bitchery!
But when she has a good streak she-
Sam shakes his head so abruptly Mister Wilson startles beside him.
Fingers shaking with anger punch in the first word.
Delete it.
Type a new one.
Delete it.
Try a third.
His fingers aren’t shaking from anger when he finally hits send. His phone screen is slippery with tears.
I’m sorry.
I can’t do this anymore.
I’m becoming a pet.
I love you.
Forgive me.
