Good Omens x Michael Sheen x Ancient Rome - a crossover made in heaven Italy
I'm crawling out of the rock I've been living under - just because I feel like this post I reblogged needs some context to be fully appreciated (and you all know how much I love deep diving into the most random shit). Quoting @thiswomanshouldbewriting :
No one is doing it like the Italian Good Omens fandom, making Michael Sheen trend on twitter because Alberto Angela used his footage as Nero in his documentary. Literally no one is like us.
The mentioned footage is, as you might have inferred if you're a Michael Sheen/GO fan, from the 2006 BBC docudrama "Ancient Rome: Rise and Fall of an Empire", which Sheen starred in as a very unhinged Nero. Imagine you're the average italian GO fan, channel-zapping while you do chores, or homework, or you're having dinner, and you suddenly see (on RAI1, aka the state-owned broadcasting *main* tv channel) THIS:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(and also the show somewhat restores Nero's reputation, *and* discusses at length the Romans' rampant bisexuality *and* mentions Nero's same-sex marriageS (plural) *and* the soundtrack SLAYS) (god I wish it was subtitled in English 'cause y'all would love it)
That's something to be excited about already. But wait... there's more!
If you're not Italian (hi 99,9% of tumblr) you might ask yourself: but what's all the fuss about? and who the fuck is Alberto Angela?
Glad you asked.
Alberto Angela, author and host of the documentary programme that included the aforementioned footage, is - simply put - an icon, a myth, a cornerstone of cultural divulgation in this country.
He's an accomplished paleontologist, archeologist, writer, and a very engaging communicator.
He's a son of art, since his late father Piero was an even greater public figure, an all-time favourite of the italian audience (think: the Mr. Rogers of science divulgation) -- which only adds to Alberto's fame and love by the masses.
He's been a staple on tv for a long time, a beloved chaperone to everything about science, culture and especially history, which he conveys with utmost passion.
He's also a very fine man.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It won't surprise you that, over time, he's become sort of a national sex-symbol: the charming nerd, the next-door Indiana Jones, the cultured, wholesome, handsome heartthrob.
...and a great source of memes:
Tumblr media
"I DIVULGE. HARD."
Tumblr media
"Deoxyribonucleic acid" *splash*
So... let's rewind for a moment: you're the average italian GO fan, channel-zapping while you do chores, or homework, or you're having dinner, and you suddenly see Michael Sheen as Nero featured on the most popular documentary programme in the country, by the most beloved & iconic tv host of recent times.
In conclusion: this is why the italian GO fandom is going positively feral on twitter. You're welcome. *crawls under her rock again*

Born on this day 70 years ago: actress, singer, sex kitten, perennial starlet, queen of terrible, terrible movies (like Santa Claus Conquers the Martians and Voyage of the Rock Aliens) and beloved kitsch icon turned credible and durable jazz chanteuse – Miss Pia Zadora (née Pia Alfreda Schipani, 4 May 1954)! For John Waters aficionados, Zadora will always be “Beatnik Girl” in Hairspray (1988): “I play my bongos, listen to Odetta, and then I iron my hair. Dig?” (As Waters raved in his 1987 volume of essays Crackpot,  “She’s shorter than Elizabeth Taylor, cuter than Alvin the Chipmunk, richer than Cher, more publicized than Zsa Zsa and has a better hairdo than Farrah.”). Every time I attend the Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekender, I endeavor to make a religious pilgrimage to see Pia’s one-woman cabaret revue in an Italian restaurant called Piero's, where she sings jazz standards in front of a giant Warhol portrait of herself. In April 2019, my friend Kevin and I even got to hang out with her, and she was a savvy, self-deprecating and adorable down to earth blast! I intend to commemorate the occasion by watching Zadora’s 1982 exploitation flick Fake-Out (aka Nevada Heat), which I just discovered is free to stream on both YouTube and Amazon Prime. It’s filmed on location in Vegas (in and around the long-defunct Riviera casino), co-stars Telly Savalas and Desi Arnaz Jr and is directed by Jayne Mansfield’s sexploitation filmmaker ex-husband Matt Cimber. How can I resist? And crank up “When the Rain Begins to Fall” and “The Clapping Song” LOUD! Pictured: Polaroid of Zadora by Andy Warhol, 1983.

pentiment monks but drag race
(with @boredom-reigns )
THE JUDGES PANEL:
Brother Piero - the main judge, encouraging and well crafted critiques
Mother Ceclila - the most motherly and encouraging of the judges, can be stern when needed
Brother Aedoc - the shadiest judge, questionable critiques but makes for great tv
THE QUEENS:
Brother Volkbert - the porkchop, fairly new queen, tries her best but too girlfail to succeed
Brother Lukas - second elim, baby queen, survives her first lipsync vs Volkbert but not against anyone else
Father Gernot - the mean queen who thinks she's being cunty but everyone (including the fandom) hates bcs shes elitist and selfish, everyone cheers when shes eliminated and she becomes notorious for being a mess on social media
Sister Amalie - early out queen bc of her lack of experience, beloved by the fans due to her tragic backstory, has a major glowup and becomes the dark horse frontrunner in an all stars season
Prior Ferenc - a seasoned queen whos reputation goes down during the show bcs he commits sabotage
Brother Sebhat - victim of the non-white snatch game curse :(((, fan favorite leading up to the elimination
Brother Wojslav - mostly safe, wins miss congeniality
Sister Margarette - the underdog of the season, does fine but has some really funny moments, sweet but also takes no shit and gives it to you straight, gains a sizeable fandom after her elimination
Brother Matheiu - forms an alliance with brother rüdeger, is mostly safe with some flop moments, is forced to lipsync against rüdeger which is deeply tragic but they kiss during the lipsync and its iconic
Brother Rüdeger - talent/variety show winner with a sapphira cristal level opera performance, timid queen but really shows off her stuff, spirals after Mathieu is eliminated and is eliminated next
Andreas Maler - narrator of the season and knows the tea abt everyone, production favorite, comes back for all stars but is an early out bcs of her act ii depression (music theater twink in his original season, depressed trade for all stars)
TOP FOUR:
Brother Florian - hidden talents queen, is super humble but turns out the most suprising looks and performances, isnt afraid to learn from critique, constantly references her deeplore but doesnt expound on it, driving redditors insane; trade of the season (im deeply biased shut up)
Brother Guy - the meanest hater in the most entertaining way possible, throws the most shade but cant take it back, gets into a fight with judge aedoc and the clip goes viral, production keeps her around bcs she makes good tv
Sister Zdena - THE SEXIEST, THE CUNTIEST, THE BADDEST; runway queen of the season and snatch game winner, throws the most legendary lines and is also the narrator alongside andreas, runner up on this season but wins all stars, fan favorite
MOTHER(!!!) Illuminata - cecilia's drag daughter, zdena's drag mother, shade sniper and reading (haha) challenge winner, only has to give you a stern look to make you piss ur pants, turns out interesting and insightful looks, wise and eloquent activist, long deserved winner, sasha colby vibes
BONUS:
Father Thomas - casted and filmed the season before being promptly edited out for his problematic behavior

Does anyone want to talk about ekbergs pretino style dress that piero gherardi designed based off the iconic sorelle fontana house designed for ava gardner bc fellini was like 😍😍 And how that in itself plays out a perfect representation of what the film is commenting on with the correlation between the film and fashion industries coming together as large powers and deciders of desire. Or is it just me.
