Day 6: Iaso
Interpretation notes and trivia under the cut!
Okay the first thing I'm going to say is I know she has a criminal lack of jewellry but I really didn't want to draw all the little baubles đ She's also missing her headscarf but like,,, shh, it's fine. Actually her design her is very very loose - for example the back of her two scarves should be tucked into her belt, and they should be tied off in front before flaring out again beneath her belt. Also her belt should be clip on with a silver clasp instead of a tied off sash like the greek women HOWEVER, what if I just drew her barely clothed and completely a mess? Okay? Okay mwah mwah mwah. Me committing liberal fashion faux pas aside, I think Iaso is the first true "what the hell does she have to do with the story of Hyacinthus and Apollo" character I've introduced and that makes me very happy, get used to that it will happen again. As the second child of Asclepius, Iaso has spent her life supporting her mother and chasing her father's shadow. Machaon, her older brother, has never disliked the nomadic life their family leads, travelling from place to place, lending their aid where they can and healing whatever sick and afflicted they find but Iaso has only ever wanted to fix her family - to keep her mother happy and to make her father stay with them. When the opportunity comes for her to fix it all, of course she springs for it and rushes off on her own adventure, still that little girl chasing after her father's shadow. Determined, upbeat and kind of precocious, Iaso's the sort of girl to take her fate into her own hands, for better or for worse.
Some assorted trivia:
Has never met her grandfather and doesn't actually care much about being the granddaughter of the Radiant. The only members of her paternal family that she's familiar with are Artemis and Orpheus. Artemis because she frequented Asclepius' home when dealing with The Hippolytus Incident and Orpheus because all of the children, even the twins, know Uncle Orpheus.
Despite her skill with healing and ingenuity when it comes to administering and refining medicinal receipes, she doesn't want to be a doctor and very much wishes she had the freedom to be something else. Hasn't had time to have a hobby but she thinks she'd like horseback riding.
Extremely good runner and fantastic at concocting poisons. Surprisingly hardy and due to handling home affairs for so long as Epione was usually busy for long hours in the healing tent, can haggle and cook with the best of them.
Routinely pilfers a lot of the jewellry Machaon inherited from their father and is especially fond of the bronze snake anklet Asclepius wore on his wedding day. It was originally given to Machaon in the hopes that it would help him find a bride but considering Machaon hasn't yet told his father that he has no interest in such a pursuit, the boy passed the bronze snake to Iaso who wears it religiously. She even says a charm spell each day just in case she finds her special someone while on the road!
Thinks the current world without the Radiant is beautiful enough and that people will ultimately perservere even if the god of light never returns. She hopes her father can understand that divine matters should be left to the gods and that his priority should be the family he built with his own two hands and not his paternal family who can never seem to agree on anything.
Favourite colour is the greenish-yellow of olive oil, favourite season is the lingering fall. Her favourite food is her mother's menemen (without onion).
#ginger draws#pursuing daybreak posting#OUUGH Man Iaso is also tied up a lot in the actual like Apocalyptic World stuff considering how young she is so I'm being as vague#as possible with her stats lol#she's probably one of my most unlikely heroes but I think she adds a great deal of depth to the generational themes of everything#because of the apollonian focus of the main conflict it's a bit of a sausage fest I admit so Iaso gives that very necessary female pov#both in terms of conflict and events and in terms of characters and their motivations#anyway if I had to describe her in a single word it'd be âUnsungâ#Her journey is certainly less flashy than her male counterparts (and even Psyche's!)#but she is no less important and no less vital to making all of these little moving parts meaningful#greek myth art#iaso#october art challenge

A MYTHOPOEIC CAREGIVE PAEAN*
#ArtLoveInTheTimeofPalliative
ââââââââđŞˇââââââââ
Hail Paean, Asclepius, most famous divinity, hail Paean
From him descend Aceso and Iaso, hail Paean - and fair-eyed Aegle and Panacea, children of Epione, along with shining Hygieia, the all-famous - hail Sophia, hail Thanatos - hail Paean, Asclepius, most famous divinity, hail Paean
To the divinities of curing, healing, the radiance of the all-cure, and to the sweetness and shining of health - and to the mother wisdom and to the inescapable final rest - hail Paean
ââââââââđ¨ ââââââââ
Utilizing readily available and simple personal and intimate objects found at home, like purple medical gloves, wilted flowers from a dried-up bouquet, a plastic doll, and a religious effigy bottle; and reworking them thus as resonant and visual sacred poetry and hymns; and fragile votive offerings; to the Asclepius family of Greco-Roman gods and goddesses; divine healers and carers who could be both compassionate and entropic in their ways.

In a Sea of Stars
James Kirk, lately captain of the USS Enterprise, stood alone on the Bridge of his first and finest command. His bags were packed, his cabin empty, and his heart was heavy.
The day that heâd been dreading for monthsâhad been refusing even to think about, in factâhad finally arrived. Plenty of the members of his crew were thrilled and relieved to be home again, and he understood that. Most of them had enjoyed their five year adventure well enough, those of them who had survived, despite (or perhaps because of) its perils and unpredictability. Now, however, they were eager to get on with their lives and careers. They had friends and family to see after what felt like a lot longer than five years away. Some of them couldnât get off the ship fast enough.
But the captain wasnât among them. Except for his nephew Peter, orphaned in Deneva early into their mission, Kirk had no family waiting for him down on Earth. There were people he would enjoy visitingâlongtime friends, former classmates, even old flames. And sure, it would be wonderful to walk in the warm sunlight and the fresh air safe in the knowledge that nothing alien and potentially deadly lurked behind every rock. Yes, he would happily have taken a few weeks of Terran shore leave.
If only it was shore leave!
When theyâd entered spacedock the day before, a chipper voice had come over the intercom and said, âWelcome home, Enterprise!â Some of the Bridge crew had cheered. Kirk, though, had felt more like crying. Trading his ship for a return to Earth wasnât a homecoming for him, because over the last five years, the Enterprise had become his home. His officers, especially his Bridge crew, had likewise become a surrogate for his lost family. And now, their five years togetherâship, crew, and captainâwere finally at an end.
They had faced torture and death and every kind of unknown alongside one another; had worked and eaten, laughed and cried, cheek by jowl. Kirk had lost Sam, the brother heâd idolized since childhood, but heâd gained a brother in Spock, whom he trusted above anyone else in the galaxy, and his friendship with Leonard McCoy had deepened into something fraternal as well. The thought of continuing his career without either of them by his side made him feel disoriented and even a little bit helpless. He wanted to reach for their hands, Spockâs and Bonesâ and Scottyâs and the rest, and say Donât let go! Donât leave me!
Kirk sank into his chair (only itâs not mine anymore, is it?) without even meaning to and put his face in his hands. Without the people heâd grown to love, the ship he also loved meant nothing. But the idea of a new ship and a new crew was even less appealing. His future hadnât seemed this nebulous since the deaths of his parents.

The fact that I have art and writeups for my challenge done up to day 15 but just haven't posted anything past Orpheus is interesting because like - this always happens. I'll be going along with a project just fine and then I'll get sick and after getting over that period of sickness I'll lose the little confidence I'd scrounged up and let whatever I was previously working on fall into obscurity and incompleteness. I can't even really pinpoint why - posting just feels unappetising to me in the aftermath, like food gone sour or a party that's suddenly gotten overstimulating to the extreme.
For the first time though, I want to keep posting. I want to talk about my ideas and share my interests and just generally speak about what I'm doing and what I love so I'm going to try to work up my courage again and continue on. I'll try to worry less about adhering to a timeline too.
#just ginger things#my intense and ever present wish to disappear the minute I feel like there are eyes on me#I want to work past this block even if it's just by posting my sillies though#iaso medea and ganymede#ugh I love y'all#shoutout to my pages of Jason/Medea doodles cause I drew Medea once (1) and immediately fell in love with her again#personal stuff
