what if a yeerk didn't know/realize it was a yeerk? What if it thought it was a human kid?

I'm trying to figure out how this would happen, and imagination is failing me. There is some evidence we've successfully convinced nonhumans that they're humans — Nim Chimpsky would sort photos of himself among photos of humans, putting photos of chimps in a different pile. But Nim was a chimpanzee, sharing 99% of humans' genes. And he was taken from his mother when he was 10 days old to be raised exclusively by humans: sleeping in a bed, wearing clothes, eating with utensils, peeing in a toilet. He'd never met another chimp at the time of that study.

By our best guess, dogs don't think they're human, nor do most pets. Dogs easily learn to prefer humans (or sheep, cows, etc.) over other dogs, but the way they act around fellow dogs is completely different from how they act around other mammals of similar size/shape. This is both because dogs mostly spend their first weeks among their parents and siblings (if not they tend to die, so even shitty breeders rarely take bottle babies), and because dogs have obvious physical differences from humans. Being dogs, they probably care less that we lack fur or use language than that we smell like omnivores who rub themselves with soap, and that we move very differently from quadrupeds. Cats are harder to pin down, but they famously don't meow at each other, only at the dumb apes whose affection or tuna sandwiches they want to demand. I don't think anyone's investigated hamsters or goldfish, but I'm guessing the odds are against one mistaking a giant hand that comes from the sky to dispense pellets for being one's sibling.

So the issue with this hypothetical yeerk is threefold: 1) yeerks don't resemble humans, 2) yeerks need to see each other to feed, and 3) yeerks can't interact with humans without using a human host. Let's suppose that the yeerk is taken into a human home immediately after spawning, that the yeerk shows infantile amnesia (who knows), and that the yeerk grows up only feeding from a private pool that contains no other yeerks. Let's even suppose that we give the yeerk a Stephenie Meyer—style human host who is completely brain dead. Even under those circumstances, would the yeerk think "I'm human"? or would the yeerk think "all so-called humans are greenish slugs operating ape bodies like mech suits; we just don't mention this fact out loud"? And is that the same thing as thinking oneself human?

For that matter, did Nim Chimpsky really think he was human, or do his two piles of pictures simply mean "apes who wear clothes" and "apes who don't"? If he assumed all apes have a life stage of being hairy and good at climbing before metamorphosing into a hairless form good at running, is that the same thing as thinking himself human? Was there a different categorization in his head, and if so was it comparable to the boundaries that humans draw around the concept "human" — e.g. "like-mes" and "beasts"? He never actually learned a human language, because evidence would suggests apes cannot, so we'll never know his exact thought process.

“wait, shota, don’t move” you whined, a pout forming on your lips.

the boy sitting underneath you just stuck his tongue out in a playful manner, not caring one bit. you peeked at the switch in his hands – he was clearly too busy with mining.

you sighed softly and leaned to grab another sheet of stickers. you eyed them, humming in thought which one to choose.

then, you glanced at your boyfriend’s face. he already had some stickers on. a small cat one on his cheek, some flowers and butterflies. there were a couple on his forehead and a fries one on his chin.

“okay, i found more iron” he announced and you glanced at the screen of his switch again.

“nice” you smiled and suddenly an idea bloomed in your mind.

you started humming a random tiktok sound that has been stuck in your head and chose the sticker. then, you gently grabbed shota’s chin.

he followed, finally looking up from his game. his lips parted slightly, his gaze hard to crack.

you took the sticker and gently placed it on his nose, letting go of his chin to press it a bit to make sure it won’t fall off.

you admired your artwork with a proud grin. but you weren’t the only one – shota was also adoring you right now. you just looked so happy, so pretty.

you started to get a little cramped up from sitting for so long in his lap so you decided to take a picture and get off.

“let me show you” you grinned and reached for your phone, opening your camera.

you two giggled at the silly faces he made (and also one or two normal ones, when he was still to busy staring at you to notice the phone). once done, you tossed your phone to the side and was about to get up, when shota pulled you back.

“huh? what is it?” you asked, eyes wide.

he put away his switch and guided your hands to his cheeks. his own hands wrapped around your waist, thumbs drawing circles on your hoodie.

you traced the stickers carefully, not wanting them to fall off.

the small alien face you put on his nose was so goofy you just couldn’t help but snort with laughter.

“will you kiss me or do i have to put a sticker on my lips too…?” shota asked suddenly and you looked him in the eye, a flustered blush forming on your face.

“hmph, i don’t think that’s necessary” you teased and cupped his face gently before shortening the distance.

his lips were soft but oh, so starved for you. shota welcomed your lips on his with a happy hum, the hands on your waist pulling you even closer.

before you could deepen the sweet kiss, he shook his head and pulled away. you didn’t even have time to ask him what’s wrong when suddenly, he flipped you over so you were now laying on the couch with your head against the pillow.

flustered and flabbergasted, you had no words to stutter as he hovered over you with a devilish smirk.

“now my turn!” he announced happily, waving the sticker sheets in front of your face. oh.

you let out a small sigh but couldn’t help to smile wildly.

“we’re gonna match” shota said, a small focused frown forming on his face as he searched for the perfect stickers to put on your face.

when he found the first one, he gently grabbed it on the top of his pointer finger and leaned his face close to yours. you could feel his breath fanning on your cheeks and you subconsciously turned your head a bit to hide your flustered state.

“see, now you know how hard it was to stay still” he giggled and eventually placed the small heart sticker under your eye.

yeah, you’re just now realizing what a torture it’s gonna be.

shota, however, seemed to enjoy this a little too much.

I’ve always headcanoned that Amy had a crush on both Sonic and Sally.

I don’t know its ever specified what Amy’s reading was that led her to Christmas Island, but from what I read it’s something like a “great hero”, right? There are some fan media that tack on “a great hero with a name that starts with an ‘S’” which would be incredibly funny since it could go so many ways.

Anyway, Post-Genesis Archie did Amy dirty, but I’ve always liked Amy and Sally’s friendship and evolution in that era. Would it be so out of the ballpark that Amy’s admiration might lead her to glance Sally’s way once or twice? I imagine the feeling is so confusing and kind of hard to digest because she’s technically supposed to be her rival.

I’m not saying that’s the only reason that she treats Sally warmly, but I love the idea one day she sees the regular SonSal antics and feels jealousy towards Sonic rather than for him.

And then Shadow comes along, and she’s completely thrown in the loop.

She’s already struggling with juggling her affection between two different people and now this alien thing who’s kinda like Sonic but not really, shows up and makes her feel seen and shares her sentiment of protection and authenticity. She’s so confused because this isn’t supposed to happen, she has one love and she’ll only ever have one love.

((I haven’t read nearly enough Archie to judge that, sadly. I do love Sally and I ship her with Sonic, but that’s because I watched SatAM as a kid. All I know is that I like it when she and Amy are good friends, so I always write them that way :)

The Japanese Sonic CD manual said her cards predicted a “destined encounter.” I like to point out that “destiny” doesn’t necessarily equal “marriage,” and it could just as easily mean their meeting was destined because it led to her helping to save the world so many times, though I suppose that’s beside the point. Sonic Origins has a cutscene that showed the exact reading:

These appear in Amy Rose’s official fortune card deck, where they’re given the following descriptions:

Time: Change is on the horizon. Be prepared for it, whether you saw the change coming or not.

Travel: You’re about to start something new and exciting; be prepared for anything!

Doom: A major event is going to happen! It may not be comfortable but needs to happen. Make the most of the situation.

…and then she cheats and tosses Doom aside to draws the Hero card instead, whose description reads: “The strength you need is inside you! Be brave, and forge ahead with your decisions and goals.”

Her actual reading of disaster was correct, as she was immediately kidnapped by Metal. Even if you count the card she cheated to get, I’d argue that due to how the reading works, the Hero would refer to herself. She’s the one who forged ahead, right?

Anyway, Amy’s gaze does occasionally fall on women. On October 7th, 2016, Sonic Channel released a mini comic in a series for Sonic’s 25th anniversary where Blaze helps out their friends. I don’t know all the details, but I do know Amy looks at her like this:

And my limited Archie knowledge includes issue 268 where she fawns over Honey the cat:

This also supports my headcanon that Amy’s pansexual; I’d argue it’s just canon that she’s bi or pan. It makes sense thematically that The Love Character doesn’t have entire genders locked off to her. That said, I don’t see her mini-crushes rivaling her main one, regardless of who the main target is. This goes for her little feelings for Shadow, too. I can’t see Amy being properly polyamorous. She doesn’t share, even as recently as 2023…

…and her romantic feelings are too all-encompassing for her to look elsewhere for too long. I do have a headcanon about the awkward transition in between the Sonic crush and the Shadow crush, though.

I think it’s a little amusing that Amy’s the most jealous character in the franchise (imo) while Sonic is the least. From that same exact issue where Amy’s fawning over Honey:

Sitcom kinda story about Russian immigrants in USA , theirs friends and their misadventures taking place in 1990-2010s; The only difference between their and our universe is that they're cat people; all these characters also died from COVID-19

Derik meets with parts of his personality that he would prefer not to see and usually actively suppressed; Derik in black symbolizes something like a shadow side, suppressed emotions, all kinds of cringe shit a person is capable of; Derik in white symbolizes something like the unconscious, trauma and so on; All this isn't supposed to make a lot of sense, it feels like an absurd dream-like phantasmagoria, takes place in 2010s

"Young Americans"

No plot

Mostly takes place in 2007-2012; Their only purpose is to look cool and be easy to draw, I use them to have a rest
