Nanami single dad au
Fluff-ish, Nanami’s sweet as hell in this
Tumblr media
The blond man in the office always kept to himself. He was a hard worker and hardly talked to any of the other coworkers unless it was necessary. That's why, when you asked him out, he was in utter shock. Why would you want to go out with him out of all people? He asked himself.
He didn't say no though. His eyebrows raised and he asked you to clarify that you were actually asking him out.
"It's alright if you don't want to-" You began, but he cut you off quickly.
"No, no." His hands waved you down. "I'm..." He thought for a bit before speaking again. "I'm free Friday night. How does 7:30 sound?" He asked.
"I would like that." You responded, a slight smile tugging on your lips as you were excited he accepted. You were already picking out your clothes and looking for a new makeup look to impress him.
...
You'd been out with Kento for a couple of months already. It seemed like things were going well until he put on a serious face and cleared his throat.
"Miss y/n, I have to be honest with you on something." he began to say.
Your heart began to beat quickly from anticipation. You were worried it would be something bad. "Go ahead." You nod.
"I've enjoyed spending time with you, but it has been selfish of me to keep this going without telling you the truth." It seemed like he felt really guilty as he looked down at his clasped hands on the table. But if he enjoyed time with you, what could be wrong?
"I... I have a kid." He said as he looked up at you through his glasses.
Your eyes widened. You hadn't really expected him to be a father. "A... a kid?" You blink.
"I assume you wouldn't have known that before you even asked me out. I understand it's not a situation any woman would be willing to jump into. So, I wouldn't fault you for deciding to not go out with me again."
You begin to think, was there a sign you missed? Was it obvious? Wait... does he have a wife? You snap out of your thoughts. "And your wife?" you asked, not realizing how blunt you sounded.
His face shot up at the blunt question. "She... she passed away..." He looked away, now having a solemn look on his face. "Like I said, I understand if you don't want to continue-"
"Do you have pictures?" you asked leaning forward a bit. His eyebrows raised in the middle.
"Pictures?" He asked.
"O-Of the kid... how old are they?" His hand hesitantly pulled out his phone. He wasn't sure what this meant.
"His name's Yuji. He's 3 years old. He's a troublemaker but he's a good kid." He looked through his photo app for that album he had of Yuji. You could tell he was proud to have him as he showed you the pictures, telling you the backstory of each.
If you didn't already have a fat crush on this man, you definitely did now. The way he smiled at his kid was too cute.
When he finished showing you the pictures, he set his phone down and sighed. "I... appreciate you being this kind to me. But as I said, I don't expect you to want to jump into this situation. You're a young beautiful girl who I'm sure will find a man who doesn't have someone else's kid. It's a big burden-"
"Kento..." You cut him off. You didn't want to hear him be so somber on his "situation". Especially when you think about how proud he is of his kid and how hard he must work for him.
"I... I like you a lot. You having a kid isn't some kind of burden. We're both adults."
"I know that, I just don't want you to force yourself into a role you're not ready for just because you want to be with me."
"You're not forcing me to do anything." you grab his hand. "I'm deciding I still want to go out with you."
"You... you are?" He seemed touched but also in disbelief. You nod. You always knew how to surprise him. He wanted to believe it. That you were different, maybe that you were even the one that he was meant to be with. You were perfect. That's why he hadn't told you sooner, he wanted to hold on to that fantasy a bit longer. But he knew he still had to be realistic. After all, you could change your mind at any point.
Later that night, he drove you home. He opened the car door for you as you stepped out. He leaned onto the car slightly as he looked at you. "You're a very lovely lady, y/n..."
You smiled, getting closer to him as you adjusted his already neat tie. "And you're a very lovely gentleman, Kento." Your hand then flattened against his chest as your eyes made their way up to his. His head was tilted looking down at you.
Slowly, you came closer and his hand came up to rest on your waist. Your lips slowly join together with his. For a second, you pull back, just to join them again but with a bit more passion. Your hand made its way to the base of his neck as he pulled you closer. It was getting harder to leave it as just a kiss goodbye.
You wanted him. And you wanted him bad. Your breaths mingled together as your heads tilted every so often to deepen the kiss. Hid hand couldn't help but make it's way down your waist, close enough to grab your-
Beep, beep.
His phone rang and he pulled it out. He breathed heavily as he read the message. "That's... the babysitter." He explained before putting it away. "I'm sorry. I have to go." His eyebrows tilted up in the middle, feeling guilty once again for cutting things so short.
You breathe out. "It's... it's alright. Don't worry about it." You step back a bit to allow him to leave. He wasn't sure but he knew it could very well be the last time you both go out, regardless of what you said. You could've just been trying to be nice and just let him down easy later or decided to ghost him. And he didn't like that this was how the night had to end.
...
Things had gone normally for the next few weeks. You'd talk to him whenever you could at work, spend breaks together, and go out on the weekends. It seemed like things were going well.
Then, one day. He saw you at your desk while some guy leaned over it and spoke to you. He looked like he was closer to your age. And he had you laughing.
Kento wasn't a jealous person, but for some reason, he felt a pang in his heart. Like you could be taken from him at any moment and his fantasy would go down the drain. Especially when he though that's what you deserved. A guy your age who you could decide to have a family with.
Instead of walking over to say hi to you like usual, he just passed by to go to his own desk. You hadn't even noticed, since you'd been busy talking to the other guy.
Later in the day, Kento heard your voice call to him. He looked up from his computer to see you standing next to him. "Hey..." He said with a soft smile.
"Hey... I know we usually go out on Friday's but I'll have to cancel today." His heart had that same feeling again. Could it be that you realized you'd be better off without him? That the other guy was better? Maybe you'd decided to go out with him instead.
"Oh..." He said, his eyes looking away from you now. That's the one thing he always looked forward to after work.
"It's not anything serious, I just-" Then your watch began to ring. You had a meeting to go to, just sparing a minute to talk to Kento. "Sorry, I'll talk to you after the shift, okay?" You said as you left.
Kento wanted to tell you he was leaving early. The daycare only had a half day today. Of course, you wouldn't have known that. You don't have a kid, you wouldn't keep track of when schools are open. So he decided to text it to you, seeing as he won't see you that day at all. He'd have to wait until you texted him back, or until Monday to see you again.
But you never did. Not that day. Not the rest of the weekend. Was he right? You were ghosting him? Were you that type of girl?
...
On Sunday, he went to the grocery store with Yuji. It was raining, but they were in desperate need of food. So he just zipped up Yuji in a cute yellow jacket, carrying him in one arm as his other hand carried an umbrella over both of them.
It wasn't anything special as he walked around the store with Youji's hand holding his. Except, he couldn't stop thinking of you and what you were doing. Why you hadn't responded to any of his texts. He'd read a can and slowly get distracted by those thoughts until Yuji pulled on his hand because he got bored of that aisle.
After long enough, he picked up Yuji again, the other hand full of groceries and the umbrella. As he turned he saw... you.
He froze for a second, unsure if it was his imagination. You didn't live on this side of town, why would you be at the grocery store here?
"Papa, are you gonna move?" Yuji asked, poking Kento's face. "Y-Yeah, we'll go home."
When you heard that familiar voice, you looked up. His eyes widened as he realized it was truly you. You were wet, with nothing but a sweater on to protect you from the rain. No umbrella, no jacket. Just the awning of the store you stood under.
"Kento?" You called out. Yuji looked at you too, unsure of what was going on. Why was it so quiet? He just wanted to go home.
"Who's that?" He asked, pointing in your direction. "She's... a friend from work." You weren't fond of that response, but you knew how careful Kento had to be when the relationship hadn't even been established yet.
You were endeared by Yuji. He was even cuter in person. "Oh my God is that Yuji?" you got closer pinching his chubby cheeks gently. "Aren't you the most adorable thing ever?" Yuji definitely enjoyed the attention. He was giggling a lot.
"He likes you..." Kento said as he looked at his son's expression. "What are you doing on this side of town? You don't live near here." He couldn't help but feel curious.
"I left my phone at the office and the boss said I'd only be able to pick it up today. Halfway through walking here, it started to pour, can you believe that?" Your eyebrows furrowed as you frowned.
"Bad luck, huh?" he said, trying to keep it light although he was slightly upset with you.
"Don't get me started." You looked at him with a frustrated expression, but it also felt aimed at him for some reason? But he couldn't tell why you'd be upset with him.
You held your own arms to keep yourself warm again as you turned your body away from him. "My house isn't too far from here, we should get you out of this rain." He moved his umbrella so you'd be under it too.
"Fine." Although you were upset, you couldn't deny you were freezing, and the office was still a long walk from here.
The walk home was quiet and Yuji had fallen asleep in Kento's arm. As he grabbed his key and began to unlock the door, he began to say "I would've invited you here on better circumstances, but-"
"It's fine." You said, not bothering to sweeten up your tone.
He took that as a sign that you were upset and didn't push any further. He led you in. "I'll be back in a second, I'll just go put Yuji down."
You stood by the door, sopping wet. You didn't sit down, as to not wet his couch.
He came back with some clothes in his hand, presumably for you to change into. He chuckled lightly as he looked at your usually perfectly styled hair frizzing up into curls. "Curly hair?" he asked as his hand picked up a strand an grazed it. It was funny to him that you two had been seeing each other for a while and he didn't know until now.
You turn away, your hair falling from his grasp.
"Miss y/n, I can't help but feel you're upset with me."
"Why wouldn't I be upset?" You said as you looked up at him.
"I don't know. You haven't told me. If anything I'm the one who should be upset with you." His own eyebrows furrowed at your hostility.
"Upset with me? You blew me off on Friday." You defend.
"Blew you off? You said you were busy."
"I meant when I was going to explain why I was busy. I waited for you but you didn't show. Next thing I know, the boss tells me you left early and you didn't even bother telling me?"
"I did. I texted you. Several times actually, and you didn't respond to any of them. I understand I told you that you're not obligated to continue going out with me but I had at least expected you to tell me." His eyebrows tilted upward again. You could tell he was just upset but hurt too.
"That's not it at all! I was not ghosting you if that's what you think." You defend quickly.
"You... weren't? Then why didn't you send a text back?" He asked, his shoulders relaxing just a bit.
"My phone had broken at the office and I wanted to go get it fixed on Friday, that's why I said I couldn't go on the date with you." You explained.
"That's why... you didn't get my message..." He realized. His hand runs through his hair in relief. You hadn't changed your mind.
"Why would you think I'd ghost you?" You asked, crossing your arms. Just a bit shaky from the cold.
"You're freezing, miss y/n. You should go take a shower and change." He lightly guided you to the bathroom.
"Kento, wait. You have to say why you thought that." You turned around to face him when you got into the bathroom. You didn't want him to get away with that. Did he really think you'd do that to him? He thinks you're the type of person to do that after a while of dating?
He sighed putting the clothes on the counter and leaning on the doorframe. "We can discuss it after you shower, okay? I don't want you soaking wet and freezing, you'll catch a cold." His thumb came up to your cheek to lightly caress it. "Please?"
Your cheeks tinged pink and your heart raced. You were still a bit upset but you couldn't help but be touched by him caring for you like that. "Fine," you mumbled, slowly closing the door and starting the shower.
...
You come out of the bathroom, practically swimming in his big clothes. He waited for you on the couch, reading a book in his comfy clothes as well. He looked up at you. "Too big?" He asked, holding back a smile. It was a bit attractive seeing you in his clothes like that.
You scoff, also holding back a smile. "Only cause you're too big." You walked over to sit next to him, not too close. You bit your cheek as you continued to hold your grudge. "So?" You asked, glancing at him. Hinting for him to explain now.
He sighed. "It's not anything against you, y/n. I just... haven't had the best experience with these things. Usually, women run at the first hint of me having a kid. That's why I gave up dating for a while. And when I saw you with that guy, I thought you might've changed your mind..."
You raise an eyebrow. "That guy?" You had to recollect your memories to figure out what he was talking about.
"On Friday. He was by your desk and making you laugh and everything. I thought you realized you'd be better off with someone like him."
"You thought I ditched you for him?" You asked, a bit in disbelief. Sure, maybe a different girl would've but... you were head over heels in love with Kento. Some random guy wasn't gonna change that. "That guy... has nothing on you, Kento." You admit. Your hand reached for his. "I told you, I like you a whole lot..." your eyes move from your hand to his face. "Do I not say it enough?"
"Well..." his ears began to heat up. You said it more than enough. "I just thought since we haven't established anything yet, you'd still look for other options. After all that would be fair."
"Are you looking for other options?" you ask.
He shakes his head slowly.
"The only reason there isn't anything established is because you haven't asked for me to establish it." You explain.
"Would... you want that?" he asked, his hand tightening its grip on yours a bit. You nod in a way that says 'duh'. He was usually a smart man, hell, he was the best employee in the company, but for some reason, he always second-guessed himself with this relationship.
He got up, not saying a word as he left. You were left a bit confused, you weren't sure where he went or if he was coming back.
But he came back quickly. He had a bouquet of roses in his hand and a box. Your eyes were wide. "This was meant for last Friday. Unless you'd like me to wait until next Friday. We're not out or well dressed so maybe it's not the best-"
You cut him off again. "What's that for?" You asked, looking at the things in his hand. He sat down next to you. "I was going to ask if you wanted to... be my girlfriend?" He asked. He placed the flowers on the table and handed you the box. "It's a necklace."
You were in shock. You really missed out on a great proposal just cause your phone broke? "Kento, you're so sweet. Of course, I would."
You placed the necklace next to the flowers, kissing him immediately. "I'll... do it again on Friday..." He said between your kisses. You didn't care. All you cared about was him. "New flowers... dinner... I'll ask again... make it special..."
...
You were nestled into Kento's arm as you both watched a movie. Kento fell asleep first. So he didn't notice when Yuji came out of his room searching for him. He dragged his blanket on the floor as he rubbed his eye.
Without a word, he crawled into the space between you both, nuzzling into Kento as he placed his own blanket on himself. You couldn't help but feel this sweet moment was exactly how your life was meant to be.

Oh fun! Man this post is long haha, took some scrolling to get here. I have only just rolled out of bed, hopefully my answers are coherent.
Last song: Want to be Free, British Sea Power. Looks like I didn't quite get to the end of the album before I put a stop to it so I could focus on something. Let the Dancers Inherit the Party is a fun one. (ALSO SHIT I DIDN'T KNOW THERE WAS A NEW NARCISSIST COOKBOOK ALBUM OUT? HELL YEAH THANK YOU FOR MENTIONING THIS)
Favorite color: Blue, generally, but especially the darker blues toward indigo.
Last book: That I finished? Always Running by Luis Rodriguez. Honestly this is one of the books that should be on those lists of things kids need to read in high school except it keeps getting banned. Extremely influential, so glad I read it. Autobiography of a teen in the Lomas gang in east LA in the late 1960s-early 1970s, who becomes deeply involved in making his community better in the midst of the new Chicano rights movement.
And now I'm back on my usual beloved bullshit with Absolution by Jeff Vandemeer (so glad my held copy finally came in haha I had it on hold since October...)
Last film: Uh... hm. I don't watch a lot of movies. Might have been Late Night with the Devil? Which I recommend but with the caveat that you should pirate it because they used genAI in the movie a couple of times and that was fucking stupid of them and everyone noticed. It's a shame too because if they hadn't I'd be in the "throw money at these people" camp, it's a great little horror film otherwise.
Last show: My beloved PBS SpaceTime. I have a few videos to catch up on. Super excited about the next one about the news that came out recently about the shape of an electron.
Sweet/spicy/savory: They all go together. Gochujang rules. Why would I pick one of my precious best and favorite children?
Relationship status: lmao (always single and loving it)
Last thing I googled: Well now it's the new Narcissist Cookbook album. Because I just woke up and am braindead and googled instead of just going straight to bandcamp.
Current obsession: The World Enders. The Phantom Riders. The Redmayne boys. Just Lord Huron things.
Currently coexisting side by side with how fast my heart was pounding during The Big Final Loop in Outer Wilds, especially That Part With The Teeth but also the whole thing really. That last loop is going to be with me for a while.
tagging: uhhh feel free to ignore but I must pass it along! @long-lost-soul @spectromagic @leucrotta @yarrowace
Ten People I’d Like to Get to Know Better
tagged by: @orphiclovers
last song: It’s all been Christmas retail crap or if you count the radio on the drive home playing Avril Lavigne
fav color: this pale seafoam green for things or white for clothes
last book: Eclipse by Wilder (poetry)
last movie: Deadpool & Wolverine
last show: N/A
sweet/spicy/savory: sweet and savory
relationship status: 4 people proposed to me this year. 1 meant it fr 🥹 (engaged irl) otherwise I have a harem on AO3 going.
last thing i googled: how big is a wintermelon?
current obsession: cooking and Infinity Nikki
looking forward to: I’m planning a road trip with the girls later this week!!

loser!heeseung was never the first one to get chosen for anything. well, he did get chosen first for musicals and solos! he had a beautiful voice and there was no denying that. but, for anything else? nope. it wasn't until you transferred over to his high school that he got picked willingly (and not because you guys were the only two left). you approached him in gym class after your teacher said to partner up for conditioning. "hey! i'm y/n. do you think we could be partners today?"
heeseung just blinked at you and then turned to see if someone was behind him. when he verified you were talking to him, he turned back to see you with a bemused look, a slight crease forming right between your brows. "you are talking to me, right?" he asked nervously.
a wry smile formed on your lips as you nodded. "there’s no one else around."
heeseung couldn't believe it. someone who wasn't a part of the theatre department was talking to him! so, he agreed with only a moment's hesitation. by the time sit-ups came around, heeseung knew about your basic interests and one secret: you were big on anime. you explained to him, during his sad attempts at pushups, that you loved anime but remained closeted because the boys at your last school made it weird. heeseung was careful not to let his excitement show; he didn't wanna scare you off before he really got to know you. eventually, after all the hellish exercises your teacher put you through, heeseung shyly asked you why you wanted to be partners.
"you looked like the type that doesn't judge people for struggling," you replied after drinking your water. you wiped the droplets of water that trickled down your neck and then offered heeseung some. "i don't have cooties. promise."
he gave you a faint, unsure smile, his hand reaching out slowly, half expecting you to pull it back and say psych! but you didn’t. you just patiently waited for him to take it. honestly, he just looked like a spooked deer to you, and you couldn’t help but find it endearing. after class was over and it was time for lunch, heeseung deflated. it was nice talking to you while it lasted.
“heeseung! wait up!”
he turned to you with round eyes, watching you rush over, a backpack draped over your right shoulder. you were freshly showered, water still dripping off the ends of your hair. you looked... happy? you slowed to a stop right in front of him.
“do you mind if we eat together?”
you wanted to eat with him? a cool girl like you wants to eat with a certified loser like him?
“it’s okay if you already have plans! i think i can find somewhere else to sit.”
no! you jumped a little. heeseung retracted into himself, rubbing the back of his neck. he’s never had someone ask to eat with him. he just sort of sat with his theatre classmates—not even friends. they all thought he was weird. you gave him a puzzled look.
“are you sure? you don’t have to pity me just because i’m new,” you pouted. gosh, was it just him or did everyone find you adorable?
“i’m sure. i was just hesitant since i’m not known for being, you know, popular.”
rolling your eyes, you clapped a hand on his shoulder. “as if that actually matters.” you tugged him along, linking your arm with his. thank goodness you were busy looking for the cafeteria because heeseung was struggling to keep the blush off of his face. as much as heeseung didn’t want to get his hopes up, he hoped that you guys would become real friends.
loser!heeseung loved his hobbies. he could talk about them for hours; they were his passion. he loved playing maple story, league of legends, team fight tactics, going to the renaissance fair, studying the metrics of trot (this one was a little too niche to really talk about though). none of these passions were greater than his passion for you. this man was dedicated to learning everything there was to know about you now that you were friends. you teased him about how stalkerish he sounded. almost immediately, he apologized.
the way his shoulders shrunk and eyes drooped down, you were definitely the asshole. when he stopped talking, you panicked. so, you didn’t think. you kissed his cheek. you blinked. he blinked. you blinked at each other. you know that ouran high school host club scene where tamaki realized haruhi is a girl and she complimented him? you’d bet your whole house that’s how red you were because you could feel the heat radiating off your face.
heeseung’s mind was still white noise. any sounds that were supposed to reach his ears were muffled, like he was underwater. was he underwater? was he dragged down into the depths of the styx river only to be lost forever? was he dreaming to cope with the harsh reality of his death? was he—
“heeseung?” you meekly called. “i’m sorry. i shouldn’t have done that without your consent. that was—”
he must’ve called upon achilles’s guidance and invincibility because he didn’t know where he got this courage otherwise. what courage you may ask? well, the courage that planted heeseung’s lips on yours.
your lips were so soft. they tasted like strawberries. he wondered if strawberries were your favorite fruit. he could kiss you forever. oh crap, he was kissing you.
anxiety crept up his spine, invading his every nerve; it was telling him he had to pull away or else you’d leave him forever. except, when he started moving away, he noticed you followed, reluctant to end the kiss. your eyes were closed too. he could’ve sworn they were open from shock.
heeseung could feel his back creaking in protest at the odd angle; he would’ve fallen over if it weren’t for you clutching the front of his shirt. huh? oh! maybe, you liked the kiss! you liked the kiss, like he did! oh, but now he couldn’t breathe. what should he do? he didn’t want the kiss to end.
he pressed back, holding out until the last possible moment. but you pulled away first, gasping for air. a blush dusted your cheeks and heeseung could guess that he was red too—probably not as pretty of a shade as yours though.
“s-sorry,” he stammered as you caught your breath. “i don’t know why i—”
you shut him up with another kiss (but this one was too short for heeseung’s newfound thirst for kissing you). when you pulled away, his big eyes tugged at your heart. they looked so sad that you moved away. it made you giggle—this whole situation. for someone that was trying to learn everything about you, he sure did miss your huge crush on him.
loser!heeseung didn’t know how he got so fortunate. was he a luck domain cleric in real life? he felt like he was rolling nat 20s continuously. he managed to ask you out (though, he was stuttering the whole time and nearly tripped on top of you—it was a whole affair that he’d rather forget) and be dating you 3 years later? he was one lucky man. and, some might say even luckier as time went on.
you got more confident once you guys got to college and, thus, you got hotter. you found your sense of self and your fashion reflected it. heeseung wasn’t doing so bad either. he found people that he got along with and could proudly (read: shyly) call friends. he found beomgyu in the league discord server that the university had and jeongin in d&d club! he’d meet up with them every once in awhile whenever they all felt like they needed to touch grass. of course, his friends knew you came first. you were heeseung’s everything. what they couldn’t wrap around their heads was how heeseung was your everything.
“you’ve been dating for 3 years!? no way, man.” “are you secretly rich? the son of some big conglomerate?” “all offense, she’s hot and you’re… not.”
heeseung didn’t let that bother him. his friends were idiots that had never felt the touch of a woman. plus, you trained him better (you told him to stop talking about himself like he was your pet, but he refused). you loved him so much without any strings attached. you were patient with him and listened to him ramble about how league kept nerfing his favorite character with every update. you never tried to change him and you told him it’s because you fell in love with him for how he was. but, there came a day when he wished you did. he happened to overhear a conversation between you and your friends.
“girl, there’s no way you’ve been with heeseung for 3 years and he hasn’t picked up a single thing about fashion from you.” “the face cards are mismatched, ma. you’re up here and he’s not even on this plane.” “don’t you ever get embarrassed whenever you guys go out? i mean, he dresses like he’s stuck in his mom’s basement.” “i hope he compensates in other ways because he’s not doing it where i can see.” “how are you okay with someone that much skinnier than you? doesn’t your body dysmorphia get triggered?”
you stopped talking to those girls after that. however, it didn’t stop heeseung from getting hurt by it. it was true, in heeseung’s eyes. you deserved much better than what he was giving you. how is it that you loved him even though he looked the exact same as he did 3 years ago? there were so many hot guys around and you never so much as turned your head to glance. there was nothing to support his insecurity about being hot enough or being enough in general. nonetheless, that horrid conversation sparked something in heeseung.
“baby, i’m heading to the gym. i’ll be back later to cook us dinner, okay?” if your brows raised any further, they’d merge into your hairline. “the gym?” heeseung nodded firmly. “gotta start working out to combat all the ramen i eat.”
“hee, you haven’t gained weight since we started dating, despite you eating my leftovers and your food. you don’t need to combat anything,” you laughed. when you saw heeseung was still tying the laces on his shoes, you let it go, thinking nothing of it. you kissed him and reminded him to stay hydrated.
thus began heeseung’s gym journey. it was difficult. muscle barely stuck even though he was eating well over 3000 calories. but, he could see his body getting toned, more cut, so he was happy. maybe people would stop looking at the two of you like you were wrong.
his wishful thinking remained at that. despite getting noticeably more fit, people still talked. they talked about his fashion, his haircut, and his hygiene (he thought this one was unfair considering he always did skincare with you and loved doing your nightly routines).
so, on the day you told him you were going thrifting, he asked to tag along. you were taken aback. heeseung never came with you; he didn’t see the point when he had perfectly good clothes at home. but you let him come along. you thought he’d just peruse with you or be there to make sure you paid with the card he gave you (he made a lot of money from his internship and begged you to use it for anything you wanted), but he didn’t. he asked a lot of questions.
“do you think this would look good on me?” “do these go together?” “are these good quality?”
you were excited. going thrifting was one of your favorite hobbies and to see heeseung taking such an interest in it was thrilling. you gave your opinions, always with a disclaimer that fashion is up to preference. he nodded along, processing your words. by the end of your thrifting trip, heeseung went home with a bundle of clothes to wear. the next day, he’d wake up earlier than normal to try and piece his new clothes together. he knew he wasn’t good at it. his friends let him know without reservations. hell, your friends let him know with their skeptical looks. it wasn’t until he talked to sunghoon in the gym that he got some actual constructive criticism.
“you’re taking an interest in fashion?”
“nothing crazy,” heeseung muttered, kicking the dust on the floor. “i just hate the comments y/n gets whenever her friends think i’m not listening.”
sunghoon looked at his gym buddy in pity. “look, man. if everything you’ve told me about your relationship is true, i don’t think y/n cares what you wear. she hasn’t in 3 years. what makes you think it’ll change all of a sudden?”
nothing. he didn’t doubt you. he just got sick at the thought of you having to listen to all those criticisms. so, sunghoon helped him. he showed him his pinterest moodboard and made heeseung swear to never tell anyone that’s how he chooses what to wear. after that informative session, heeseung got to work. he used your instagram feed as a reference, wanting to match your aesthetic, and created a moodboard inspired by it. using his pinterest board, he went thrifting by himself. he recalled the countless videos he watched while sorting through the clothes. cotton, not polyester. depending on the stain, you can get it out. tailoring is always an option when you find something that is a little too big!
he was very serious about his transformation. he even digitally scrapbooked the pictures of him in different clothes so he could be like cher in clueless. since then, his fashion started improving. your morning routines together changed ever so slightly with you telling him to spin for you. his heart warmed with every compliment you gave him.
“who is this diva?” “i feel very underdressed. i’m changing.” “are you getting dressed by law roach?” “you’ve been taking dress to impress a little seriously these days.”
heeseung’s confidence soared. now, he wasn’t ashamed to go out with you. your friends weren’t ashamed to be seen with him either. they even went as far as to compliment him! score! he’d gotten brownie points with your friends.
“finally, he’s dressing like a boyfriend fit to be with you, y/n.”
oh, that made you pull the brakes real fast. it completely escaped your mind how much your friends dissed your boyfriend (because you brushed them off as stupid comments). come to think of it, heeseung always did manage to miss the moments where they talked about him, but only by a minute or two. what if… what if he did hear those comments?
curious and worried, you asked him during your nightly routines. “hee, did… did you start dressing up for any particular reason?”
uh oh. heeseung hated lying to you; it physically pained him. so, he confessed. “i heard what your friends think of me and i didn’t want you to have to keep hearing them say things like that.”
“oh, baby, i’m so sorry you heard that,” you cooed. “i didn’t tell you because not even an atom of me agrees with them. i love you as you are, uni tees, basketball shorts and all.”
heeseung put down the moisturizer and looked down. “i know… i just wanted people to stop thinking we’re wrong for each other.”
you frowned and pulled him into a hug. “well, we know we’re perfect for each other. i’ve known it from the moment you started talking about the metrics of trot. i remember just nodding along and thinking how beautiful you were.”
heeseung blushed at your words. you always knew how to make him feel better.
“you don’t have to dress up for anyone but yourself, okay?”
he shook his head with a small smile. “i like matching with you. it’s fun.”
“well, i guess we really gotta dress to impress then,” you grinned, kissing his cheek.
with that, heeseung was reassured. no more pressure. he could just dress however he wanted (which was however you were dressing). but, his glow up didn’t stop there. no, he thought about a haircut. he wanted something that would shut your friends up forever. so, after scrolling forever on tiktok, he found that he liked a mullet with some face-framing pieces. he went and got it done at sunghoon’s trusted barbershop and came out a new man. he immediately sent you a picture, to which you responded, “don’t go anywhere. no errands. no grabbing food. come home. now.”
safe to say, you loved his new haircut. he loved his new haircut. he loved it even more when his friends and your friends couldn’t manage words. good. stay that way.
loser!heeseung was still a loser but, at least, he was in a hot man’s body with his very very attractive girlfriend. he still played league. he still larped. he still took the renaissance fair very seriously. he still loved you more than anything in the world. he was still your loser.

hi Mark! i noticed in "#1202: Psychology" you didn't make any mention of the two aesthetic profiles Vorthos and Mel, and i was wondering whether any of the decisions being made specifically take them into consideration. like i ask this because one of the biggest changes to Magic this year (UB coming to standard) is something Vorthos care the most about but it seems like nothing has been done to directly address them as an audience
The aesthetic profiles aren't rooted in psychology like the psychographics, so that's why I didn't touch upon them in the psychology podcast. I'll probably do another aesthetics podcast one day (I did one as part of my "20 Lessons" series) and I'll talk about them there.
The concept of Vorthos, at its core, is about appreciating the creative elements of card design above all else. Many Vorthos adore Universes Beyond because we've done a very good job at capturing the various properties in Magic card design form.
But yes, there's a subgroup of Vorthoses that care specifically about Magic's creative world building, characters, and story. We're spending a lot of time and energy to make sure the products set in the Magic multiverse are doing a good job of representing it. 2024 had many successes (Bloomburrow, Duskmourn, and Foundations) in this area, but also some failures (Murders at Karlov Manor and Outlaws of Thunder Junction). The creative team is trying to learn from them and lean more towards the type of creative execution that make this group of Vorthoses happy.
As I've been saying a lot, Magic excels at being additive, but has issues with being subtractive. If you want cool Magic settings and characters and stories, we can and will continue to do that. If you want us to stop doing non-Magic settings, characters, and stories, I can't help you there. There's a big audience that enjoys that and so we're making it for them.
I do hear that there are players that are sad that non-Magic elements will mix in gameplay with Magic elements. There will be many limited formats, and a few constructed formats (like Cube or Premodern) where you can avoid that if it's important to you, but the number of players who will only play with in-Multiverse components is low enough that it's not something we're focusing on in the main sanctioned formats.
It's not that I'm not sympathetic. Go back ten years and I was one of you. I fought hard against non-Magic elements for many years. What finally swayed me was seeing how much I enjoyed it when a license that I truly loved got brought to Magic. There's something so exciting, so glee producing about combining two loves, that I became a convert. I want to make people as happy as I was made.
I know this isn't the answer you want to hear. I try to use this blog to be as honest with all of you as I can. Magic keeps changing and evolving because we try to do things that players will love, and there are a lot of players that truly love Universes Beyond.
That said, we're not abandoning in-Multiverse Magic. We're still making three sets a year (the standard for the majority of Magic's life), and we're truly taking to heart the lessons of 2024 (more worlds that are our carefully crafted take on the tropes and less just a place to show them off). Making the Magic multiverse the most compelling and exciting thing possible is still our goal, and there are a lot of people working really hard to continue to do that.
I think the future is bright for the Vorthoses, but I truly understand why some of you are sad with Universes Beyond coming to Standard.

Defending @lil-liaa
I usually don’t post in this blog cause i have other ones but i don’t think this is being fair, me and Lia have been moots for a year and I have seen all her work over the years, I don't know a more creative person than her and I have been with her while she makes her moodboards by call and it is simply impressive the hours she invests in doing it, today I She wrote so devastated and we made a call talking, she has worked on this for so long, I remember how excited she was when she reached 1k, what I mean is that her community and her blog are very important to her, these people are accusing her because three Posts are similar to those of other blogs and that seems stupid to me since you have not even seen her other posts to know if she really makes an effort or not, Lia has made collages, dividers, banners, and a lot of other things, to she is really passionate about digital art and the only time she left her blog was because of the loss of a loved one and the truth is I don't care how many people are going to believe me after this post I just want them to leave her alone, here I am attaching some evidence...
Tumblr media
This doesn’t even have so much in common just a three pics, in case you don’t know how moodboards are made, 2 or more colors are taken as a base and the images that best match the tones are searched on Pinterest, not only what she "copied" are just two photos but she also made a divider and a collage
Tumblr media
Here’s just pinterest pics (proofs that are from pinterest in keep reading) and again i saw a lot of rude comments towards her that so unfair and hurt feelings cause considering how long Lia has been on her blog it's like invalidating all her hard work!!
Tumblr media
In this post she even clarify that the divider isn’t made by her but the collage it is, also it’s just 2 pics that are similar!
This pictures are from pinterest, everyone can use it!
Tumblr media
People bullying her
This doesn't just happen on the internet, but in real life, one of Lia's moots simply republished the post where they accused her of copying, she asked him/her why he/her did it so quickly, If they were supposed to be moots, if someone betrays you so quickly without questioning anything, they were never your friend and instead of responding privately she/him made a post just to make her/him moots laugh and the comments are gross, my god it's disgusting, this is directly bullying, if you are a thinking person and if you have ever had some kind of link you should try to talk something privately instead of calling the crazy girl and tagging all your moots so they can laugh, the worst thing is that you can tell that this girl only wants interaction because when she and Lia were chatting she threatened Lia with blocking her but then when Lia blocked her she made another post like "she blocked me" it's like, besides being a treacherous rat you can't have the decency to talk to her about it, Lia has been so nice to everyone but after all, this is where you can see who the ones who truly supported her are, and not the fake friends.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm not going to censor his/her username, he deserves it, tumblr is as much as real life, the importance of moots is like friends in real life, because if you want you can just harass someone and all your friends will laugh without question anything.
Also, Lia has a tutorial of a lot of things that she made! If she knows how to do it, why would she steal or copy from other blogs?
She has tutorials of gifs, texts, banners, etc, if she really stole and copy, why she knows how to do it by herself?, and if she knows how to do it by herself she doesn’t even need to stole!
Tumblr media
LIKE SHE DIDN’T CARE?! Sorry but this is so wrong, i can tell that, SHE CARES, all these people who are making posts mocking her and calling her crazy because according to them she "copied" three measly posts, when if I were in her place and all my years of work were at stake I would also act like a crazy person because it's worth it, here it is demonstrated clearly her hypocrisy, if Lia wants to defend all her hard work or defend herself from bullying by blocking you she is crazy but if she makes a post explaining everything it seems like she doesn't care, this frustrates me so much
Here more evidence of Lia’s drafts
youtube
Just a few of her drafts
And last but not least I want to give credit to Lia's great work these years, so you can see that there is a true artist behind all this nonsense controversy, here are some of her moodboards, my personal favorites that I can't imagine how much time it would have taken
Extra: “Lia we know it’s you” Don’t acuse me of being Lia, i’m just a real friend
Evidence: Contact of Lia and me
Tumblr media
Hi guys, it's come to my attention that someone in the moodboard community known as lil-liaa has been copying / taking heavy "inspo" from other creators like @y-unjins and @iluvrei view more for more info + evidence + my opinions on the whole situation
before i start, i'm not trying to run lil-liaa off the platform nor am i trying to stur up drama, this is just to bring light to the situation as not many people know and many people (including myself) defended her when this first happened, i also want liia to realize that what she's doing isn't right and that she shouldn't just brush off "accusations" like these when there is evidence.
proofs
Tumblr media Tumblr media
you can see the similarities as lil-liaa used 3 of the exact same pics as iluvrei's including one edited by the original creator without adding credits to the post.
2nd
Tumblr media Tumblr media
here you can instantly tell that the moodboard was copied (lil-liaas on the right being an exact replica of y-unjins), only changing 2 pics excluding the idol change and
3rd / last
Tumblr media Tumblr media
lastly, you can see how one lia used the exact same divider (+ didnt give creds), two she uses the same images not only in the moodboard but also in her gif (same pics from y-unjins moodboard including the png)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media
now, lil-liaa was sent multiple anonymous ask from last year and one recently accusing her of stealing moodboards, although a lot of people defended her last year including me due to the ask having no sorts of proof of moodboards being stolen and no one else speaking on it but now the recent ask she has received included proof and her response to it was very (in my opinion) rude and just sounded like she didn't care.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
in my opinion, i don't believe this was just a draft she had premade and i don't believe she somehow got the same exact photos from y-unjins moodboard recommended, i believe since this isnt the first accusation and now there's proof of this i believe she has been copying moodboards since last year when she was accused. i don't believe lil-liaa cares about this, the fact she's stealing from other creators and when she gets called out for it she pushes it off with the same excuses

Fanboy - Choi Seung Hyun/ T.O.P x reader part 1
Tumblr media
Summary: After rising as a k-pop star as the newest member of BigBang, your management team suggests taking on an acting role as well, where you meet one of your best friends old friend, Seung Hyun, who quickly charms you, all while neither of you knew you were both going to the same person to rant about each other.
Warnings: none, some really toothrotting fluffiness
Walking onto the squid game set you gasped in awe, yea you had played in sold out arenas, had thousands of people lining up to meet you, but this was your first time acting, but your PR team swore it'd help boost your image while waiting for your new single to drop. As you looked around in awe you failed to notice the eyes that immediately landed on you, or the two boys in the corner fanboying over the fact they worked with you.
Seung Hyun looked at his co-star in shock "Why are you so freaked out? Shouldn't it be the other way around?" His new friend asked, knowing the dynamic between you two, A few months after T.O.P had stepped down from bigbang, the agency was quick to bring in a replacement, again shaking the K-pop world whenever his replacement was a girl. "No, she's amazing, and she treats the boys amazing" Seung Hyun shrugged his friends comment off, it wasn't that he was a huge fan, but he did happen to follow you on social media and watched a few of your live performances on his phone, and seeing how you interacted with the boys he considered brothers warmed his heart.
Your eyes quickly met his as you rushed over excited "Oh my- You're- I'm-" You kept cutting yourself off with excitement, he couldn't hide his smile as you failed contain to your excitement, feeling happy to know you weren't one of the k-pop stars that chose to shun him for his past actions. "I'm Choi Seung Hyun" He smiled offering his palm to you, causing you to blush as you watched him press his lips to the back of your hand "I-It's an honor, Mr. Choi" You smiled, proud of yourself for remembering your manners even in your panicked fangirling state, Seung Hyun gasped holding a hand to his chest chuckling "Please! I'm not that old! Call me Seung Hyun" He laughed, returning your hand as he offered the way "They want us all ready to film soon, want to wait with us?" He offered, you smiled nodding softly, starting to talk about your characters.
Whenever filming started, you were upset to find out your character wouldn't interact with your new friend's until later on in the filming process. It went by rather quickly though, using your free time to read over your lines to try and get the best performance possible, I mean, acting for tv was just like acting for your shows right? You were good at acting, You and Ji-Yong had an entire fake relationship currently, per your managements request. As you read over you first scene though you frowned, why didn't you management tell you about the 'stunts' in the script? Walking onto the film set for red light green light you went to find your marker in the large group of people "Okay! Extras! You have timed blood packs! This scene we're gonna focus on Thanos's shove and the introduction to Y/n's character Yi-mon!" The director shouted into the speaker, you watched as the camera positioned close to Seung Hyun's face and yours and one at about knee length for you. "Action!" You heard, Standing up straighter you heard the doll recording play saying red light, Seung Hyun looked for his cue before shoving the line of stuntmen and women down "Tag" He smirked as the blood packs splattered, the blood landing on his cheek perfectly for the scene, You grunted as you landed on the ground with a thud, looking at Seung Hyun in fear, waiting for your characters pack to go off, the director motioning for you to stay down as Seung Hyun smirked "Tag, Senorita, you're it" He smirked, jumping over you as the doll called greenlight "Cut!" the director shouted "That was perfect! First try!" He cheered, Seung Hyun just turned around, quick to kneel at your side helping you to your feet, brushing the sand and dirt off of your knees and palms "Are you okay?" He asked softly, not wanting to hurt 'Korea's sweetheart', lord knows the backlash he'd face for that. "Aw, you're so sweet" You giggled, hugging him gently "I'm okay, nothing I haven't dealt with before, plus it's been awhile since I played some real tag" You joked, he just chuckled shaking his head helping you to the side set waiting for your next scene.
As it approached your last scene for the night, you marveled at the set, every bunk bed and tile had so much detail in the main room, it was amazing. As you moved to your marker Seung Hyun was quick on your tail, ready to finish up for the night and sleep, you on the other hand were ready to get out of here and call your best friend for not warning you how charming his best friend was. "Action!" Your director tiredly called "Thanos, get away from me" You snapped as Seung Hyun smirked walking closer to you "You owe me money- I'm sorry but do I need to call her a...B I T C H?" he asked, spelling out the word as he didn't even want to use it in the same sentence he used to speak about you. "Yes Seung Hyun! Start from the top!" Your director shouted, Your friend frowned at you before going back to his original marker.
"Thanos, get away from me" You snapped, Seung Hyun stepping closer to you as he glared at you "You owe me money, bitch" He spat, his hand going to your throat, squeezing gently "That money was mine and you know it" You argued, standing on your tippy toes to try and make it more believable "You're gonna get me my money, or I swear, I'll kill you before these walking pink fucking idiots get a chance to" He seethed, your breathing increasing as genuine fear flashed over your face "Cut!" You silently thanked your director for calling cut as you stepped back down on your feet looking at your friend "Are you okay? I wasn't too harsh on you was I?" He asked gently, you chuckled shaking your head "No, I'm okay Seung Hyun..I promise" You said sweetly, he was started to realize you weren't anything like how you acted on stage, on stage you seemed so confident and cocky, loud and outgoing, but in person you were so quiet and sweet, nothing like how you were from what he saw on videos and interviews. "Can I walk you back to your trailer?..." He asked, resting a hand on your shoulder causing you to blush "Of course, who knew you were such a gentleman" You giggled, you were under the same impression as Seung Hyun, other than what your friends told you, you only saw performances of Seung Hyun's, seeing him as a performer who was confident and cocky, like he knew everybody wanted to fuck him, and he loved it, but instead you were learning Seung Hyun was a huge softie, flirt, and gentlemen.
As you got into your trailer you wished Seung Hyun a good night before immediately facetiming Ji-Yong, not caring if you woke him up, you needed him, and as your fake boyfriend he had to answer. You watched as the screen changed, showing a dark room with your best friend's face being illuminated by his phone screen "Y/nnnn, I'm sleeeeping shhhh" He whispered into the phone before going to roll over before you stopped him by tsking him "No! You don't get to! You never told me about Seung Hyun!" You shouted, quickly covering your mouth realizing he could still be close to your trailer "Awww does baby y/n have a crush" Ji-Yong teased, you groaned dropping your head into your pillows "No! He just- So!" You continued ranting to your friend for another two hours before eventually falling asleep, not waking up again until you heard three soft knocks on your door "Come in!" You shouted still half asleep, already being used to the boys always coming into your room for some reason while you slept, it became easy for you to shout come in in your sleep, which is how Seung Hyun ended up standing in your trailer while you slept peacefully.
It took Seung Hyun fifteen minutes to successfully get you awake, it only taking him two whining fits and being called Ji-yong and a bitch four times to do it. You sat on the bed tiredly rubbing your eyes as you slowly became aware of everything, including your makeup and costume ladies standing in your trailer now instead of your co-star.
As you walked onto set you were exhausted, filming for a show was a lot more draining than performing you felt as you approached your chair. You ignored everything as you curled up into your chair tiredly laying your head on your knees watching the others film their scenes. As you started to doze you heard two familiar voices approach you "Jagi, what time did you go to bed?" Seung Hyun asked teasingly, you just glared at him as you yawned "My friend and I were talking most of the night" You explained before closing your eyes to rest them, totally not falling asleep. You woke up as your director shouted your name "Y/n! We need you for Six legs!" He shouted, you quickly scrambled over to your mark, trying to rub the tired from your eyes "S-Sorry!" You shouted, trying to avoid everybody's gaze as you stood on your mark watching your co-stars stand on theirs. "Action!" Your director called out loudly, Seung Hyun smiled at you crossing his eyes "Excuse me, senorita, would you like to join my team" He asked, raising his eyebrows towards you "Depends...Have you collected the infinity stones?" You asked seductively, tilting your head "Of course! I'll destroy anybody who stands in the way of my greatness!" He shouted moving his hands around to show his nail polish to the camera "As long as you idiots don't get me killed" You sighed before walking to your next mark "Dude do we really need a chick on our team?" Your friend asked Seung Hyun, Seung Hyun smacking his chest in reply "Shut up, don't ever question Thanos's decisions" He snapped before following behind you biting his lip "Cut!" You director called, you stood out of frame smiling as you hugged Seung Hyun tightly "That was awesome! I swear you're amazing as Thanos" You giggled as he just shook his head laughing, holding you tightly. "Hey..After filming..Do you want to maybe come by my trailer? I've got some wine that I've been wanting to try" Seung asked softly, instinctively holding your hips in one hand while placing his other hand on your lower back. You blushed brightly trying to suppress your giggles "S-Sure!" You smiled nervous, desperate to get the film day over now.

hiii I’m curious : what’s your process for creating your stories? like character development, plotting, creating arcs, etc?
thank you for asking !!! i'm going to get way longer and more thorough about this than necessary I feel it in my bones so I'm going to read more this now (I included a few tidbits from my miro board for carry the blade :) )
it's such a mixed bag ! part of this is my adhd lmao, and part of it is because, genuinely, I think each story needs something different.
almost ALWAYS (with one rare exception of a sci/fi fantasy world I've been building for years) I start with character, especially in original work. Because character is everything it's who we're following it's what the audience/readership will grab onto. Usually I have a basic premise and setting already there, but I don't build on it until I get to know who we're dealing with in the story. And then after building up the premise, setting, and plot I do even more character work after.
sometimes.... sometimes I get really impatient to start and start writing half way through the planning process. But anyways.
so I come up with character. do the basics. think about what their deal is. What is the journey they need to have, the lesson they need to learn, what themes and emotions do I want to explore with this character? Why is she important to me? Why will she be important to others?
I also think a lot about relationships
i just wrote a coming of age dramatic comedy for instance, and for that one, I broke up the story into my protagonists relationships. Wrote out the arc/story of each relationship and then combined each of these arcs into the key points that made up the film. Each relationship I wanted to be relevant to her grieving process, as she had just lost her mother. IDK if that makes sense. I wish I could show you but unfortunately I cannot.
for fic its honestly similar, but we already know character, so I usually ask what about this character/these characters am I most excited to explore.
that being said, coming home came to me in the idea for what they'd be like in modern day, and then a single idea for a single scene - their first kiss in the lab. I wrote that first, then asked myself what the context I wanted to give it was. Of course, I changed it a little once I actually got to writing and fleshing out chapter eight.
but this fantasy fic i'm writing is a fun example. I'm building out a lot. I'm building out characters, the world, the themes. - using visuals to help me kind of guide myself.
but because I have adhd and get impatient. I am outlining throughout this process to keep myself entertained. perhaps ideally you'd figure out everything first then outline then write but my brain just doesn't work that way.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
in fics, especially, the relationship is so important that I really like to see how the obstacles they face, both due to their own psychology and internal pressures, can reflect the themes, create tension, etc.
but i also like to reflect on side characters too - their motivations and desires. So they don't just become like - flat little reflections of the central love story.
Finally, and this i learned from acting theory mostly - but I love it - is in each scene I like to think of what each character wants, what they are going to do to try and get that, and why they want it. In this fic, wants are something I also look at from a chapter by chapter basis.
side note - and i'm only saying this this far down so hopefully not too may people will see it - but I do have a secret subplot going on throughout the first half of this story that the audience doesn't know about.
in order to make this work I've been mapping out everything going on behind the scenes, and making sure they pair up well with events that people reading will see. it helps me plant little hints and seeds while hopefully not giving too much away (secret subplot in blue, actual story in red)
Tumblr media
sorry i know this is such a ramble I just took my meds and had a double shot of expresso so I am buzzing right now lmao! Obviously I'm not the expert and there's not only one way. And also it really is so different for me every time. It's important to think about what the story actually calls for !

Ok, here it is...
。・:*˚:✧。The cheeky survivor。・:*˚:✧。
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Warning: shameless smut ahead. G!p. Mommy kink. Serial killer! Bada. Ghostface mask.
. . • ☆ . ° .• °:. *₊ ° . ☆.  . • ☆ . ° .• °:. *₊ ° . ☆. .
You just broke up with your boyfriend since you caught him with another girl in the club today. You came home, irritated and annoyed with everything. You change into comfortable clothes and you hear your doorbell ring.
You were already annoyed and now someone's at your door? Great, just great. You walk and open the door, with your annoyed expression evident.
You see a tall, probably a woman? Wearing a ghost face mask with a hoodie covering her hair. She smiles eerily from behind the ghost mask "Hey there, sugar. I heard someone's had a rough day. Mind if I come in?" her deep, raspy voice hints at dark intentions "Maybe I can help you get your mind off things?"
You scoff "It's not Halloween and even if it was I'm not giving any treats so get lost" you slam the door on her face
She catches the door before it closes completely "Awww... is that anyway to treat a lady who's just trying to help? Besides, I don't need tricks or treats." She says leaning against the doorframe, her muscular frame filling the entrance.
You cross your arms, super annoyed with whoever this is "Then what the fuck do you need?"
She chuckles darkly, pushing the door open wider and stepping inside without invitation and pulls out a knife.
You were in a really bad mood, so you don't really care about anything, and just snatch the knife from her, push her against the wall, and put it on her neck "you...why the hell are you annoying me?"
She laughs, clearly not threatened but impressed by your anger "Feisty one, aren't you? I like it." She keeps perfectly still, though her muscles are tense, ready to react if needed "You know, all that anger... it's such a waste. I was gonna relieve your stress..."
"What do you mean?" You keep the knife still against her neck
She smirks, eyes gleaming with excitement "You're hurt, angry... betrayed. That's a powerful mix. And you just took a knife to a stranger without hesitation. You've got potential, sweetheart. I could show you how to channel that anger... in more... satisfying ways."
You wrap your fingers around her neck, choking her, with knife still in your hand "I swear, drop that stupid deep voice first..."
She laughs, clearly amused by your rough handling. "Okay, okay... " she says in a normal, feminine voice, "I'll drop it. But just for you, sugar." her normal voice is high-pitched and sweet, a stark contrast to her deep, menacing voice "Can I breathe now?"
You let her throat go, as you play with the knife in your hand, arms crossed "now tell me, why are you here, did that bastard send you here to annoy me because i dumped him?"
She smirks, rubbing her neck where you choked her "No, he didn't send me. I'm here because I heard about you. About your little... situation. And I thought, 'oh, what a waste.' So, I decided to pay you a little visit."
"with a knife?"
She grins mischievously. "Maybe.... Besides, I wanted to test your reflexes..." her eyes follow the way you handle the knife. "You've got quite an... intense way of greeting people." She reaches up slowly, deliberately
You hold the knife to her face that had the ghost mask "tell me the truth"
She doesn't flinch, doesn't try to move away from the knife "The truth is, I thought you'd be more pathetic. Crying, drinking, moping around, thought I'd enjoy the pathetic sight. Not... this." She gestures to the knife at her face "This is interesting."
"I like interesting. So, I'll ask you again, sugar... what are you going to do with that knife?" her voice is calm, almost teasing, as if she's daring you to use it "Are you going to try and hurt me?"
"actually..." you grab her by the collar of her hoodie and pull her inside and push her onto the bed, holding the knife still in your hand.
She laughs as you push her onto the bed, though she makes no move to resist "Well, well... isn't this cozy?" she lets you maintain control, watching your every move with curious eyes "Still planning on using that knife?"
You straddle her lap.
She looks up at you, the ghost mask hiding her expression, but her voice remains calm and steady "You know, for someone who's supposed to be so broken, you're really quite... intense." she reaches up, her hand brushing against your arm as she tries to grab the knife.
You grab her throat pinning her on the bed.
She gags slightly as you pin her down, but she doesn't struggle or try to escape "Mmm... I like a girl who knows how to take control." she speaks around the pressure on her throat, her eyes never leaving yours behind the mask "You gonna... choke me out, sweetheart?"
You bite her shoulder, through the hoodie
She lets out a surprised groan."Mmm... aggressive one, aren't we?" her voice comes out huskier, breath catching slightly "Tell me, sugar...where did you learn to play so rough?" her hand moves to your thigh, stroking it.
You grind down on her lap only to find out, something was poking your bottom.
She chuckles lowly, her presence clearly feminine, but there's something off about her, something that doesn't quite fit "Surprised?"
as you grind down on her lap, you can feel something solid underneath the thin fabric of her pants, something that definitely shouldn't be there if she were a biological woman "You feeling that, sugar?"
She grabs your hips, pulling you harder against the bulge in her pants, her breath hitching slightly. "Hmm...you like it? I've got everything you want down there"
"You what?"
She leans in close, her breath hot against your ear, through the mask as she whispers "I said, I've got everything you need. A nice thick cock, just waiting to fill you up." her hand moves back to your hip, pulling you even closer as she nuzzles into your neck.
"You know what, fuck it" you throw the knife away as you pin her down on her mattress and kiss her neck
She tilts her head to give you more access, her strong arms wrapping around your waist as she pulls you closer on top of her. She growls "Clothes off, now." her hands start pushing at your shirt, trying to remove it.
She helps you remove your shirt, tossing it aside before attacking your pants. As she does, she kicks off her own pants and hoodie, revealing a pair of boxers that clearly outline a large bulge.
You quickly straddle her back, sitting right on her bulge.
She moans lowly as she feels your weight settle on her lap, the bulge in her boxers becoming even more prominent. She wraps her strong arms around your waist, pulling you closer as she nuzzles her face between your breasts through your bra "Damn, you're killing me sitting there..."
You cup her breast through her bra, squeezing it.
She moans deeper, head tilting slightly to give you better access "Mmm... very greedy, aren't we? Should've known a girl who snatches a knife from me couldn't be all soft and innocent" her hand moves to slide up your thigh "Tell me, what else do you want?"
You wrap your hand back on her throat, tilting her head up. "Hmm, tell me, do you go around wearing that stupid mask with a knife to what, kill them?"
She grins dangerously at your grip on her throat, enjoying the sensation "Sometimes..." she purrs softly "It's fun..." her hand moves to squeeze your ass, her jaw pulses under your grip.
"Sometimes, I just like to see the fear in their eyes as they realize they're about to die..." her voice is low, almost a hiss, her free hand slowly reaching out as if to mimic slowly stabbing someone "But you know what's really fun?"
She pauses, tightening her grip slightly on your thigh "When they don't show fear..... when they get excited instead" she leans in closer, her breath hot against your ear "Like you right now, sitting on my cock, hand around my throat..."
"You're not scared..." she whispers, her hand sliding up to your stomach possessively "You're not begging for your life... You're just sitting there, looking at me like you're trying to figure out if you should kill me..." She chuckles
"Maybe I should call the police...?" You mock her as you lean down and bite her shoulder while still holding her throat, sitting there on her cock.
She lets out a pained groan as you bite her shoulder, her hips bucking slightly beneath you. She laughs darkly, not struggling against your grip on her throat "And say what, exactly?" she challenges, her hand sliding up to grip your hair.
"That miss ma'am goes around killing people...?" You lick her bitten skin.
She shivers at your lick, then lets out a deep, rumbling laugh "Please do try calling the cops while straddling my cock, gorgeous..." she flexes underneath you, making sure you feel every inch of her thick length against your panties
"cocky, aren't you?" You grind on it as you leave small marks on her neck.
She moans deeply, one hand gripping your hip to encourage the delicious friction "Mmm... cocky AND packed..." her voice is husky with desire "And you're making quite a mess on my neck, aren't you? Those pretty teeth of yours..."
"Keep doing that and you'll make me want to tear those panties off and show you exactly who's in control here..." her voice takes on a dangerous, teasing tone "Though I'd advise against testing me further..."
"And what If I did?" You ask daringly.
Her eyes narrow, a hungry glint appearing in them "Then I'll fuck you so hard you'll be walking funny for a week." she growls, her hand squeezing your breast roughly
"Then fuck me."
She snarls, her masked face contorting with anger and desire. She sits up suddenly, wrapping her arms around you to flip you onto your back. She tears your panties off in one swift motion, your thighs wrapped around her waist "You asked for it..."
She grabs your wrists, pinning them above your head. "Now I'm going to make you regret those cocky words..." her masked face lowers to hover inches above yours. "Going to fuck you senseless until you're begging me to stop..."
"Go ahead, baby" you tease her like earlier she did you.
She growls deep in her throat at your teasing tone "Call me 'baby' one more time while I'm fucking you" she thrusts hard against you through her boxers, showing exactly what she's capable of "I dare you." her eyes flash dangerously.
You bite your lip as you get more turned on, "Then do you prefer "mommy" instead~?"
She freezes mid-thrust, a look of shock and intrigue on her masked face "What the fuck did you just say to me?" she releases your wrists and grips your jaw instead, forcing you to look up at her "Say it again, you little brat."
"ngh...mommy..."
She let's out a choked groan, her entire body tensing up at the word "Fuck..." one hand still gripping your jaw while the other slides down to pinch your nipple through your bra.
You gasp and moan, your legs around her waist tightening as you grind up.
She sees where you're grinding against her. "Fuck, you little slut..." She reaches between your legs and presses her finger on your clit. "Gonna call me mommy and rub your dirty cunt on me? You're fucking mine now, understand?"
"yes....mommy..."
"Good girl..." she praises, flexing her muscles beneath you to encourage your movements "You like rubbing yourself on mommy's boxers?" she purrs, her hand sliding down to hook your leg over her shoulder, opening you up more to her.
She rubs your clit in circular motions, her fingers pressing against your sensitive button as you grind against her boxers "That's it, baby girl... Rub your little pussy on mommy's boxers while I play with your clit... You're so fucking cute like this..."
Your head thrown back as you are breathless beneath her.
She continues rubbing your clit, her fingers moving faster as she feels your juices starting to soak through her boxers "Look at you, so desperate to fuck yourself on mommy's boxers... You're gonna make a mess, aren't you? Soak mommy's boxers with your fucking juices?"
"ngh...mommy....your cock please..."
She smirks darkly, reaching between you both to palm her clearly hard cock through her boxers "You want this big girl? Think you can take it?" she continues stroking herself through the fabric, pressing against your entrance.
"Yes please.."
She takes your bra off and flicks your nipple sharply "That's 'Yes, Mommy'... or do I need to punish you before I give you what you want?" her voice drops to a whisper
"ngh....mommy....please"
She shudders at your pleading tone, quickly pushing her boxers down just enough to free her throbbing cock "Good girl... Begging properly now..." she lines herself up against your entrance, just the tip pressing in slightly.
"Look at mommy..." she growls, slowly pushing herself inside you, stretching you open "You're taking mommy's big girl so well... You're so tiny, my poor baby girl..." she murmurs, slowly pushing deeper, her hands spreading your legs wider.
She bottoms out inside you, her hips flush against yours "Fuck... you're so tight.... " she starts to move, her thick length dragging along your inner walls "You're gonna be screaming for mommy...."
She starts to pound into you mercilessly, her large hands gripping your hips tightly "Take it, you little whore... Take mommy's big fucking dick like a good girl..."
You were panting and moaning and crying in pleasure.
She snarls, her fingers digging into your hips painfully as she snaps her hips hard, hitting your cervix over and over. "Mommy's gonna break you in half, you tiny thing..."
You moan loudly as your walls clench around her.
"Fuck... that's it... squeeze mommy's cock with that tight little pussy..." she moves one hand up to twist a nipple while continuing her punishing rhythm "Come for mommy... I want to feel you milk my dick..."
You grip her cock tightly inside you as cum convulsing on her cock.
She roars as your walls clamp down, forcing her to cum with you, filling you up with her hot seed "Take it all, you little slut! Mommy's filling her up with her cum!" she continues to thrust shallowly as she cums, making sure you take every last drop.
She rolls you over and collapses back with you in her lap, still lodged deep within you as her chest heaves "Good girl... You took mommy's cock like such a good little whore..." she runs a possessive hand through your hair.
You were breathless as you look at her face still with the ghostmask.
She smirks and reaches up to remove her mask, tossing it aside "There, that's better. I want you to see who's giving you this dick, sweetheart."
Your jaw drops as you see that beautiful face behind her mask, the one with juicy lips, pretty eyes and long hair. You actually blush for the first time that night.
She smirks wider at your blush, running a thumb across your cheek "Why so shy now, darling? Was the anonymity making it easier to be such a dirty little girl with mommy?" she rocks her hips slightly, keeping herself firmly planted inside you
You clench around her.
She lets out a low groan, hands tightening on your waist "Mmm... you're milking mommy's dick so nicely... Does seeing my face make you creamier, baby?" she leans down, voice dropping to a husky whisper
"mommy never told me her name..." you say curiously.
She tilts her head, an amused glint in her eyes "You really want my name now after you just took my cock so perfectly? Interesting..." she strokes your hair gently "I'm Bada lee. And you..." she studies your face intently.
"Bada...I'm Y/n"
Bada smiles, leaning in to press a soft kiss to your lips "Y/n... I like the sound of that. But I didn't come here to tell you my name or to be your friend. I came here to kill you."
"Whatever. can I get your number?" You were too in the clouds to care. You reach for your phone and give her.
She raises an eyebrow, chuckling softly as she takes your phone and enters her number in it "You're asking for my number after you pinned me and stole my knife and after i said I'm here to kill you? You have some nerve, Y/n." she was amused and also gave up on the idea of killing you, since you seem interesting...
Then you got off her cock as she stood up and wore her clothes. You got under the sheets covering yourself, "I'll call you when I'm craving for that dick" you say as you bite your lip.
She laughs amusedly, but nods and says "You're really something else..." Before she leaves.

The T.I.C.K.L.E. Bomb (@squealing-santa 2024)
Panda’s Notes: Happy late holidays to @gingerlee-holds, my favorite Tumblr sibling. >w< I'm sorry about this being so late, but between two different sicknesses and trying to get into college again, I have not been having a fun winter. I was really excited about writing this the whole time though, and I'm kind of proud of it, so I hope you like it too.
[Ao3] || [Cookies Found: 0] || [Commissions] || [Ko-fi]
Izuku Midoriya knows a lot of things. Probably too many things, to be honest. Probably too many things that he shouldn’t know. Things that can get a stupid, overthinking, adorable, unfiltered wiseass in trouble if he isn’t careful with the information or what he does with said information.
Information like, say…
How to build a bomb?
Why the fuck would he even need to know something like that?
Better question: do you want to know too?
-TRIGGER
Important to know about things that explode: There’s always a TRIGGER. Like a button; if it gets pressed, explosion happens. Usually, it’s something as simple as an actual button of sorts, or maybe a timer ticking down, or a clock. Sometimes it’s as complicated as a remote signal or a light pattern, or the position of Jupiter in relation to the Dog Star or some shit. Now, some people might think of the trigger as the final piece, but for methodical overthinkers Midoriya, it’s a key place to start. You want to make sure you have your keys before you lock a door, and you want to make sure your trigger is stable before you build the rest of the bomb.
Science favors the consistent, after all.
“Deku!” Bakugou snarled under his breath, glancing over his shoulder to find Midoriya spinning a pen casually between his fingers.
Midoriya blinked curiously, innocently. What was Bakugou upset about? They could usually get through class without him making a scene, at least.
Bakugou glared at him pointedly—a warning—before he looked back at his own worksheet.
Midoriya smirked a bit to himself, catching the “pen” in his palm and clicking it. The tip of the pen extended into a short pointing stick, just barely the length of Midoriya's forearm, and he tried to keep quiet as he leaned just enough to drag the tip down Bakugou's spine.
He flinched sharply, his breath catching on a stifled giggle as his shoes squeaked against the floor.
The room was suddenly tense as Aizawa stopped talking, and a few of their classmates held back their own laughter as he glanced over his shoulder with glowing eyes.
Midoriya had clicked the button as quietly as he could, stashing the fake pen up his sleeve and folding his hands on his desk as he bit his lip.
And the second Aizawa huffed and looked away, Bakugou was glaring a hole straight though his head.
Yep. Trigger’s good.
~~~~~~~~~
-INCINDIARY
More often than not, the bulk of an explosion’s destruction comes from the fire that happens afterward. While not every bomb results in a fire, those that do require a spark to ignite them. Now, it’d be easy to mistake this spark for a TRIGGER, but it’s more of a second step. Like so: The trigger is activated, and the INCINDIARY starts the reaction.
Midoriya combed his fingers through Bakugou’s hair, smiling softly at the way he leaned back into the touch. Bakugou rested his head against Midoriya’s knee, sighing through his nose as he tapped the controller in his hands.
“You do realize you need to bring the iron back to base at some point, right?” Bakugou huffed.
“Mhm…” Midoriya nodded, scratching gingerly at Bakugou’s scalp. “I already said I will. Just like you said you’d help me build the mob spawner.”
Bakugou rolled his eyes and groaned. “I’m gonna build your fuckin’ mob spawner after I bring back these damn mangrove saplings or whatever they’re called.”
“Aw, you’re thinking about the colors already?”
Bakugou huffed, shrugging his shoulder slightly as Midoriya’s fingers started to crawl over his ears. “Shut up…”
Midoriya snickered, leaning to bury his face in the blond hair before he glanced back at the screen they were sharing. As he spotted Bakugou’s character sprinting back into the compound they’d built, Midoriya leaned to grab his controller. He opened the door to their iron farm, hardly taking a step outside before he threw a single snowball.
“Why do you have your dogs wander—” Bakugou had started to ask, only to flinch as the snowball hit his character. “Wait, did you just—No!”
In an instant, four of the dogs that Midoriya had gathered were attacking him all at once. Bakugou stammered, torn between wanting to avoid damage and not wanting to hurt Midoriya’s pets. Unfortunately, this left him a few blocks short of his house when his character dropped over dead. As his side of the screen glowed red, he watched Midoriya’s dogs nose around his fallen items, apparently picking them all up.
“I told you this mod pack was great.” Midoriya giggled tauntingly, reaching to play with his hair again.
Bakugou grabbed his hand, taking a breath as he spoke slowly. “I didn’t get to reset my fucking spawn. Do you know how many levels I had?”
Midoriya was unfazed, smirking playfully and leaning to look over his shoulder. “And that’s why I built the emergency base at spawn. And the levels can be sorted with the five clerics that you said were a waste of time to level up.”
Bakugou pouted heavily, grabbing Midoriya by his shirt and angrily kissing his cheek.
Definitely a simmer. For now, at least.
~~~~~~~~~
-CASING
Funny enough, this can swing from the least important to possibly the most crucial. The CASING, naturally, contains every essential part of the device, and it can range from a simple clear housing to an intricately designed piece of hardware meant to camouflage into its hiding place.
“If you have even half the brain you had literally an hour ago, you will fucking untie me.”
Midoriya pulled a shocked face, not that Bakugou threatening him was surprising or even offensive anymore.
What will always be shocking and offensive, however, is betrayal, which is the only word that can describe tying your partner’s hoodie sleeves together while he’s half asleep during a cuddle session.
“Deku, for fuck’s sake, can you not go one day without being a little—?”
Midoriya had stolen a soft kiss on his lips to shut Bakugou up, his hands starting to crawl along the hem of his shirt before scribbling playfully up his sides. Bakugou huffed and cringed, biting back a smile and trying to writhe under him.
“Y-You—C-Cut it out!” He growled through snickers as his squirming made them sink deeper into the beanbag chair.
“Why~?” Midoriya asked playfully. “Is something bothering you?” He pressed his thumbs along his sides before squeezing at his hipbones.
“Fuck off!” Bakugou snorted, finally attempting to pull his arms free of his sleeves.
Midoriya quickly shifted his hands instead, wrapping his arms around Bakugou’s ribs and nuzzling into his neck.
Bakugou blinked warily before giving a half-amused huff and returning the tight squeeze.
“Dammit, Deku…” He chuckled, rolling his wide-awake eyes at Midoriya pretending to sleep against him.
Casing secured.
~~~~~~~~~
-KINDLING
Unlike everything else, KINDLING is the only truly optional piece of a device. Consider it an extra enhancement to the INCINDIARY. When the fire starts, it might need a little fuel to keep it burning, just in case.
Midoriya stretched his hands as he yawned, groaning tiredly as he pulled one back to run his palm over his face.
The other hand, however, was caught before he could pull it back. A calloused touch ran up his palm before fingers laced with his and squeezed softly. Or not, actually; that kind of hurt. Midoriya snickered and opened one eye, finding Bakugou sitting beside him on the bed and apparently debating whether or not to crush his hand.
Bakugou glanced down at Midoriya’s face before pressing a chaste kiss on his knuckles. “’Sup, fucker?” He greeted with a slight smirk.
Midoriya pouted, squeezing Bakugou’s hand in return as he glanced toward his bedside table. “It is barely eight in the morning; why are you already like this?”
Bakugou shrugged, letting Midoriya’s hand fall as he moved to lie down beside him. “You seen my blue hoodie?” He asked casually, resting his chin on his arms.
Midoriya hummed as he rolled over to look at him. “Not lately. Why?”
The blonde huffed curiously, glancing to meet Midoriya’s eyes. “You positive? Because I asked Chipmunk the other day. She seemed pretty certain the last place she saw it was with you.”
Midoriya might have hesitated to answer, and Bakugou might have noticed his quick little flail for words. “You think I would lie to you?” He tried to sound sweet and innocent.
“You don’t want me to answer that.” Bakugou sneered slightly at the way Midoriya pouted and turned away from him, reaching to scratch gently along Midoriya’s spine. “But, I suppose I’ll let it slide for now. …Y’know, assuming you are telling the truth.”
Bakugou gingerly traced a few shapes on Midoriya’s back. “If I find out you’re lying…” He whispered playfully, grinning as the other boy squirmed. He shifted to pull Midoriya into his arms, nuzzling softly into the crook of his neck before pushing himself away. There was a soft pat on his leg and a sneaky tickle on his foot before Bakugou walked out of Midoriya’s room, and Midoriya stretched as the door shut quietly.
And as soon as it did, Midoriya rolled over and reached into the sliver of space between his bed and the corner of his walls, pulling up a soft blue hoodie with a bright yellow belly and four red circles on its back. He couldn’t help giggling as he hugged it to his chest for a moment before hiding it again.
It’s almost time~
~~~~~~~~~
-LOCATION
There’s a dumb little saying in real estate: ‘Location, location, location’. And while real estate, as a concept, is stupid, there is truth in such a saying. The final LOCATION for a device determines everything: from the speed of the TRIGGER; to the shape of the casing; to the type of incendiary. Now, something to consider: when planning something so meticulous as a bomb, one occasionally needs to be much more hands-on. For example, certain locations need to be carefully prepared before the big event.
“I still think you’re going to die.” Uraraka teased gently, resting her hands on her hips as she watched Midoriya work.
Midoriya acknowledged her comment with a casual sort of noise, kicking at the side of the pile of pillows he’d built up around one of the beanbag chairs in the corner of the commons. “You’re probably right.” He shrugged. “But I still say it’ll be worth it~!”
He shouldered past her playfully, scooping a quilt off of the couch and dropping it with a slight flair of his arms. She giggled and followed along, stacking up a few of the stuffed animals she had brought for him.
Less than an hour now…
Midoriya’s hands might have been shaking. Every breath made his chest fill up with butterflies. As he walked through the hallways in the stolen hoodie, he almost wished he could make use of its fake flame vents just to drain some heat from his face. At the same time, the weight of the round, chubby beanbag critters he had were practically burning a hole in his pocket, as if they were begging to escape. He almost told himself he could hear their whiny little pleas, but he knew it was his own inner voice just egging him on.
When he finally pulled the trigger, he almost felt like he wasn’t in control. But he felt his weight pressing his shoulder into the barely-opened door, and he felt the weight of the three blue—and one brown—toys as he threw them like grenades.
Bakugou had barely looked up when his door opened, and his hands had just reached his headphones when he was hit with four little beanbags that squeaked out their names on impact with his head and torso.
Time stood still. Bakugou stared in slight disbelief at both Midoriya and his choice of weaponry. There was the slightest hint of a grin on his face as he picked up one of the critters and cradled it in his hands. Frankly, that alone was almost worth it; Midoriya smiled brightly as he watched him…Right up until Bakugou’s gaze fell on him again.
His soft smile shifted, his entire face twisting into a vicious sneer. And Midoriya felt chills run up and down his spine.
Game on.
~~~~~~~~~
-EXPLOSION
…I suppose I have to paint a picture, because I want you to really understand. Every bit of preparation; every piece—material and conceptual—involved; it all culminates in one glorious moment. A single instant. A dazzling EXPLOSION. In the proper hands, the event is masterful. It’s exhilarating; it’s chaotic; poetic, even.
And it’s so damn fun.
Midoriya shrieked excitedly as he sprinted through the halls back toward the stairs, already laughing through panic at the knowledge that he wasn’t getting out of the proverbial blast radius anytime soon.
“You scheming little shit!” Bakugou barked after him, grinning like a fiend and struggling not to laugh himself. “Get back here so I can kill you!”
“You’re not catching me that easily, Kacchan~!” Midoriya taunted, sparks of black and pink energies zapping through his hair. He reached his hands out, a pair of Blackwhips lashing from his wrists to grab the closest stair railing and catapult himself down.
“Oh, you fucking cheater!” Bakugou called, and explosions crackled as he boosted himself down the stairs after his fleeing partner.
Midoriya had just barely gotten out of Bakugou’s sight as they left the stairwell, rushing as best he could toward the commons when he was suddenly tackled off of his feet.
The common area was quickly a mess of scattered pillows and stuffed animals as the pair wrestled, and Bakugou didn’t bother trying to grab his hands when it was much easier to just grab his hips. Instantly, Midoriya was squealing with helpless laughter, his own hands grabbing at Bakugou’s wrists as he sank into the pile and tried to kick.
Bakugou couldn’t help smirking at him, letting his fingers scribble under the hem of his hoodie to squeeze around his stomach. “You’re such a damn menace, y’know?” He snickered, leaning to press a kiss to Midoriya’s neck and relishing in the squeaky giggles it got.
Meanwhile, Uraraka and Iida peeked over from the stairwell, with Iida holding a stopwatch in one hand.
“Bakugou definitely goes easier on you two.” He teased, chuckling as Bakugou whacked Midoriya with a pillow before pulling him into a hug. “Took him almost two minutes to catch him this time.”
“Look, not all of us can run at the speed of sound, Emergency Exit.” Uraraka taunted back before nudging Iida playfully with her elbow. “Bet you I can beat my record before you beat yours though.”
Of course, Midoriya didn’t the whole “making a bomb” process a secret.
this is such a sweet quote and Lando's said exactly the same as well <3<3
Tumblr media Tumblr media
but askfgsalfg why is this proving what I've kinda been suspecting and Zak doesn't rly fit in with landoscar and has largely not had as much to do w the driver partnership as he used to
Tumblr media
we already knew from Andrea that Lando and Oscar do their own little separate debriefs and they were so excited about getting their own door separating them from everyone where it used to be in a shared hallway (including Zak)
but the golf, the dinners and the marketing stuff is all referring to Carlos' and Daniel's eras. Oscar couldn't even be bribed to play golf, is literally famous for not wanting to do marketing/contrived PR content and not being good at it, and the only "dinner" situation after Hungary was Lando and Oscar eating fast food with other drivers and then playing board games with Alex on the flight home ?? we also know that these debrief dinners don't happen otherwise bc Oscar usually goes home to sleep or out with Lily and Lando goes out being a very single guy or gaming w Max and BanKai etc. that post race debrief finishes and those two peace OUT. and tbh the amount that they've chosen to fly together to and from things now Oscar lives in Monaco, they've taken even more of that debriefing into their own hands!
like I just get the vibe that Zak doesn't rly have the boys club anymore and Andrea being Dad to his two kids is how things are rly being managed. even down to him sometimes wanting to be the bad guy that the two kids bond over hating sometimes even tho they love Dad really. that's just not a dynamic I see Zak fitting into. (and ngl probably some of the Daniel era in particular those tensions needed to be managed between him and Zak but aaaaaanyway)
I say this as someone who fully expects Lando and Oscar to have normal teammate fights at some point where there's the strong words to the media and angry radios etc etc - the fact that they decided so early on in their relationship to do a teammate version of 'private but not secret' couple thing of keeping fans and media out of their business, both good and bad, means they're absolutely discussing and strategizing about this (bc especially after alpinegate and taking Daniel's seat, it would've been very handy and easy for them to go a bromance angle!). which as a charlos veteran and also someone who knew the Max and Lando fight would blow over faster than anyone thought it would, I'm never going to be fazed by a fight between Lando and Oscar - but I'm also just not sold on it ever getting as out of control as so many people want/expect it to. and I feel that way partly at least bc I think there's been sort of a gen z gender neutralling happened to McLaren bc of this partnership (not as much of the usual of masculine/boys being boys energy*)
but also bc there's only one big personality/celebrity instead of two. off the track, Lando and Oscar perfectly compliment each other's personalities including how their friendship is a quiet thing rather than a big media-beloved bromance so they don't have the burden of managing fan expectations and reactions about it. you can kind of parallel it with the Lando and Max fight last season bc those two are genuinely involved in each other's lives as friends and spend the most time with each other than any other driver, including Lando being a regular fixture in Max's little family - but Max doesn't do PR at all so a lot of people still don't know how close they are. so the assumption was that their fight was this massive thing and the end of their relationship but a lot of us were like pfffff this'll blow over and Penelope's uncle will be back before she could even notice.
in the same way, Lando and Oscar doing all their bonding time out of the public eye and being the only two people who truly know how they feel about each other at any time means they are the only authority anyone should listen to! when they say 'fight over' they mean fight over! when they giggle and laugh waiting for a plane together after Monza or smile in relief at each other immediately after getting out of the cars in Hungary, then that's the truth! they're choosing not to let fans and the media in on this so that fans or the media can't feel they know better and contradict them!
and that's where I think Zak is more on the outside of things too. when even Andrea is like yea these boys are talking about things before speaking to their own teams then it feels like that's a real shift away from the explosive teammate dynamics everyone keeps referring to.
*which I'm not saying is inherently bad or toxic! esp since the dynamic of it with Lando and Carlos and Daniel was of scrungly little brother and adoring loud big brother <3
I can’t help but feel that the people who are complaining about the people criticizing this campaign are the types that are going to be pissed if BH does just kill Predathos and lets the gods live, especially if that comes at the cost of some supposed deserved happy ending for their faves. And what’s maybe ironic is that I feel that an ending in which BH choses to save the gods, the campaign does rise a bit in my esteem, and might in the eyes of some other critics as well, as it would, i dunno, maybe play into these themes of forgiveness and love and overcoming resentment that keep being used as a defense of this campaign and these characters?
Anyway, godspeed on the quest to find good faith arguments on why this campaign is excellent. would genuinely like to see one.
Oh definitely. Like...look. I hope I conveyed the point of "I don't particularly think either of us are approaching this with a deep respect for the other, but we can at least make a polite fiction of good faith that, if you actually can come up with an argument that assumes that, I will accept in genuine good faith" and so in that interest I'm trying to scale back on attacking people. But also...I've been down this road before. When people complained about how bad Campaign 2 was, firstly, it specifically took hold either right after a ship competing with theirs became canon or at least was strongly hinted towards; or was in response to Molly not coming back; and secondly a lot of this happened after they'd been effusive in their praise for the campaign up until that point. Whereas for Campaign 3 you can, if you actually wished to do the research, go to my blog or most of my mutuals' blogs and do an archive dig and trace the optimism and excitement turning into skepticism turning into "yeah, this ain't it chief" with fairly consistent complaints (poor pacing, plot-character mismatches, indecision, failure of the characters to ever really challenge each other meaningfully in a way that leads to growth) throughout, coupled with, if I am being honest, a massive deal of grace and patience and "maybe this is the course correction" that was not always earned. Dorym becoming canon did not shift this among the many people who like Dorym and also think the campaign isn't very good, myself included, so I don't really think it's shipping wank that's the problem. I'm not inclined to respect arguments that either, 118 episodes into a campaign that's very close to its end, demand I consider its ~potential~. I have. It has, for the most part, failed to deliver over the course of those 118 episodes.
If a common complaint within the fandom of people who have watched hundreds of hours of this story is "it's unclear what story it is telling and the party is aimless" and small pockets and echo chambers are like NO YOU DON'T GET IT...I don't want to say its impossible for this to happen and that the majority is automatically correct, but were I an outside observer I know where I'd place money in a bet.
And yes, I agree. I think a lot of of the people defending it are either, to be very blunt, in a sunk cost fallacy situation/dedicated to a certain level of contrarianism more so than having their own opinions that exist independent of the fandom; or believe it will give them a happy ending for their faves or validate their belief the gods should die or they just want Exandria to burn at this point for whatever reason. I don't feel it's actually something that follows from the narrative, which, as this post so aptly puts, is just kind of sailing towards the rocks while the crew sort of bickers and doesn't do anything. It feels like the most satisfying endings possible are either achieving what the gods couldn't and destroying this existential threat for once and for all (in which case the gods survive, and hey, they actually did take a third option that no one was really talking about, the indecision was still boring as fuck but at least there's a scrap of payoff), or tragedy befalling them (loss of party members, killing a large swath of Exandria) as a consequence. And neither of those are what they want, which is like. the abstract concept of change and the less abstract and deeply unflattering concept of killing everyone who didn't give you what you wanted.
It is in fact unsurprising that the arguments in the fandom are the way they are. Wow I wonder why people who think "I asked this person for something and they didn't answer so I think letting loose an endless hunger entity to eat them" is a good and noble thing to do can't handle the idea that existing in the world means you and things you like will receive criticism, and other people won't just do what you want if you whine loudly enough.
Experiences in the Alterhuman Community (and Beyond) as a Fictive
It's a weird experience being a fictional character, especially dealing with fandom, the fact that your source is fictional, and interactions with people based on that--including some of the dehumanisation that's so common toward fictionfolk. I'm gonna go into that here because I need somwhere to collect my thoughts, so this might get long. I'll be talking about my experiences as a fictive, but this could very well apply to anyone who identifies as a fictional being--fictionkin, fictionlinkers, etc.
So, I see the version of me on the screen as an AU version of me, in short. I mean, I'm me, and I don't think I even looked exactly 1:1 with my canon self--so naturally, even though events line up pretty closely, I see my source as... Almost like a fanfic of my life? Like sure, that's decidedly me, and decidedly a lot of the things that happened to me and my friends, but also not me. I'm not that guy on the screen, he's what represents me.
Even though I fully believe I got here by dying in a literal past life, my source media here is absolutely fictional to me and I just... Don't look at it in really any other way. Which I guess makes sense if you put it into my perspective--what else would it be? It really is like reading a fanfic based on your life though, or reading an article about yourself in the news. A bit of a shock, a bit of "why did they include THAT?" sprinkled in here and there, a bit awkward sometimes, and it does tend to resurface bad feelings. But overall, it's not that personal to me. I'm largely fine with it existing.
On the other hand, what is shocking is that people see me as fictional. I'm a fictional introject, from a fictional source, from the perspectives of a lot of people here. But I look at my source and I go well... Yeah, that's fiction of course, but my life is an actual thing that happened to me. Realistically I know that not everyone has spiritual beliefs and not everyone even accepts fictional identities as something "real", but man is it weird to just... Have it be spun in such a way?
I'm used to being in the media, I'm used to having cameras on me and being in the public eye. I'm used to articles and stories and posts on the internet. I'm used to fans even! But this isn't your regular, run-of-the-mill experience of people wanting to know you because you're a hero. This is people who see your life and experiences as a fun story they saw in a book or on TV, coming up to you with the idea that you're their favourite character, and not... A whole entire person. It's so damn weird.
There's still that level of disrespect that comes from people who are a little parasocial with you, but it almost hits deeper here because a lot of the time, you know they're not seeing a hero or the things you've literally done in your memories. They're seeing that guy on the screen they think is cool, and while he represents you, he's not you. And they're treating you like a celebrity because of that weird fanfic version of you on the TV or in that book.
There's usually little acknowledgement of your life or experiences as "real". When you're presenting as your fictional identity around others, you tend to get put into one of a few camps:
Cool Character from Media who I love and adore and want to talk to (and will probably get fanperson excited about it). I will probably get dispraportionally upset if Character tells me to back off a bit because I don't want my blorbo to be mad at me.
Character from Media I'm in love with and will immediately start asking invasive questions to or outright flirting with. Could get real gross real quick.
Problematic Character or Guy From Problematic Media that I instantly dislike because that's so Problematic how dare you show your face. I'm reporting you for being Character, you should change your identity if you want to exist so bad.
Character from Media who is disabled/queer/mentally ill/has any soft personality trait ever and I will now be treating you like a sweet little babyboy cinnamon roll who could not hurt a fly.
Person who identifies as Character? How interesting! I'm going to really pry and question everything from your actions in-source (to get unique perspectives from Character) and question literally everything else. Because this is Science and I'll get mad if you don't tell me everything, you need to tell me everything or you're rude.
Of course there's nuance and there's absolutely times where you'll be treated as a normal person, but the above are... So damn common. I've been here for a few months and I've already had some weird stuff happen to me simply because I'm Kirishima and people feel entitled to give me cutesy nicknames or whatever. Even without knowing me or my system at all beforehand. It's just.. So different from anything I've experienced before? Being treated like a celebrity is dehumanising enough, but being treated like a character.ai bot or just generally a form of free entertainment and not a person is so perplexing to me.
There's also that if you're from a popular source, you see stuff about yourself everywhere. Posters, plushies, advertisements, posts on social media--all of it. Some of that I'm used to already, but it's kind of weird when you're mentally aware that this is all for that twisted-mirror version of yourself and not you. And if you get a little uncomfortable at some fanart showing up out of the blue, or someone making a source related joke... You're kind of just expected to brush it off. Which yeah, I get it! It's about the source, not me, but it's still just... A weird feeling. A feeling of not being allowed to be upset because it's about the source and not literal you.
I think there needs to be a line, maybe. Not saying that fictives should be putting a stop to any media or fandom ever, just.. That maybe respect toward us for being uncomfortable with fan content due to being a fictive or fictionkin should be more normalised. It should be more okay to say "hey, I'm Character, please don't joke like that" to a friend, or "don't send me fanart of this thing, I'm Character and that's weird"--which it normally is! But there does tend to be a sort of layer of "Oh, it's because you're Character. You know that's not you, right? You shouldn't be upset, you need to source separate more."--when if most other people were to set a boundary like that, it would usually be respected. Source separation can be great, but if someone hasn't separated or doesn't want to, why is it okay to still send them material they're uncomfortable with--or at least, why do people tend to argue that the fictive should "just separate from source" instead? It... Just boils down to alterhumisia toward fictionfolk, honestly. It sucks.
There's a lot of problems with basic respect toward fictionfolk of all kinds--hell, even in the alterhuman community where it's meant to be safe. I don't know if this rant is entirely coherent or not, I don't know if there's anything noteworthy to take from it--but if you do take something from it, let it be that fictionfolk want to be treated like people. Source separated, not source separated, canon divergent or compliant, hearted, linker, 'kin or 'tive--we're people. Don't let our identities change the way you instinctually treat us. Let us be openly us, and treat us as you would anyone else.
Hi Pia
Sorry is this ask is bothersome but I need some advice.
I while ago I was going through a really bad time mentally but found solace in a fandom. I became friends with a person that I met in a particular fandom and they encouraged me to get into fanfiction and it really helped my mental health as a form of escapism.
After about a year I took the plunge into writing my own fanfics for the fandom and at first they were well received. But then a gender swapped the characters.
For context- in this fandom most of the characters are male and almost all the fanfics available are canon compliant in this regard and I so I wanted to explore an au where all the characters were women instead. I posted a few chapters and was excited for feedback but then my friend from the fandom saw my new fic and messaged me telling me to take it down because it was problematic.
I asked them to explain why and they said that changing canon like that just for the "fun" of it wasn't ok and that if I'm going to "mess around with the characters identities" then I should make them trans instead.
I told her I wasn't comfortable making the characters trans because I myself am not trans and don't feel like I am educated enough to write about gender identities/experiences that I haven't gone through and I don't want to accidentally write something disrespectful.
My friend got back to me and said that take was even more problematic. I asked her to explain further because I was really confused by this point but she didn't get back to me.
A few days later I found out she had told all the people in the discord we were in together that I was being problematic regarding canon and I'm guessing she also went to my bookmarks and sent screenshots to everyone of the "problematic" ships and fics I like??
And now I'm getting hateful messages from people who used to be my friends in the fandom and I don't know what to do.
Should I make the characters male again like they are in canon? Or take the fic down altogether?
Hi anon,
So the short answer is:
You can write genderbending. Every fic is problematic somehow to different people and audiences. Trans people don't all agree on genderbending so you're not going to get a single "correct" answer. Don't take down the fic unless you want to. Don't change the fic unless you want to. Get some better friends. It's worth educating yourself further about this subject.
The longer answer is behind the Read More:
Genderbending is complicated and nuanced and there's a ton of discussion about it. I highly recommend you go somewhere like FanLore to check that out. Especially the further reading section, to see multiple sides of the discussion to then decide how you feel.
There are trans people who love cis genderbends. There are trans people who hate them. There are trans people who don't think they should exist. There are trans people who don't give a shit. There are trans people who want more to exist. There are trans people who think only trans people should be allowed to write any kind of genderbend. There are trans people who think no trans person should ever want to write cis genderbend.
My perspective (as a trans person) is closest to this archived Tumblr post linked here.
With this quote from mercurialmalcontent:
Changing a character to the ‘opposite’ cis gender is a very different thing than making them trans or nonbinary. Insisting that people only change characters to trans is also really damn invalidating, because it implies that being trans is interchangable with being cis. Whoopsie doodle!
And then the entire response from roachpatrol, especially:
so like. people now reducing the issue to ‘cis people are gross and hate trans people’ is pretty ridiculous. it ignores basically twenty years of women questioning, confronting and then dismantling the de-facto heteronormative, exploitative male gaze in order to create the radically progressive fandom atmosphere as we know it today on tumblr.
And then also this from curriebelle:
there’s nothing inherently transphobic about art that explores gender - quite the opposite, I think - and that’s what genderbends are about. It can be hugelybeneficial to imagine male characters as female in order to explore roles that aren’t traditionally given to women
~
I think the main thing is that in fandom, many trans people have been forced to confront how they feel about genderbends (or cis swaps), whereas many cis people never have to think about it due to cis privilege. That doesn't mean writing it is bad by default, it doesn't mean fics that feature it shouldn't exist, and it doesn't mean problematic fanfiction is bad either. Like I said, everything is problematic to someone.
What actually bothers me the most is that people who you think of as "friends" are trying to police you in this way. Obviously I don't know the full story or the content of the fic, so maybe there's greater context going on that I'm missing. But on the surface, genderbends aren't inherently transphobic, even if some trans people don't like them, or feel dysphoria over them existing.
Ultimately genderbends aren't also often about the trans experience. It's really weird for your friends to assume that writing a story about a bunch of cis women, and a bunch of trans women is going to be exactly the same, or that one is inherently "better" than the other. Trans women experience some different issues (depending on the world), and the stories are likely to have different elements to them. And you're right, not feeling comfortable telling a trans story when you're a cis person wanting to write about cis women does actually make a lot of sense. That doesn't mean you can't do it, but it does make it clear why you didn't do it.
Anon, a friend who is quick to tell a whole bunch of people on a Discord server that you're writing a fic with content they don't like is not a friend, let alone a good friend. They might have once been very caring, but their response here indicates they're putting up a chance to seem righteous and 'moral' above actually caring about you or what you have to say. Especially in a situation where honestly a lot of trans people don't agree with each other, but we all mostly agree not to be dicks to people who write this stuff and to just live and let live.
(Also, trans people can write trans fic that other trans folk feel is transphobic! Something that heals and helps one person, hurts another, that's why the rule in fiction for things like this is very much: "don't like, don't read" and also: learn about it, do some research into it, but you don't have to morally justify what you like in fiction and fiction is the place to write this stuff - it is literally pure fantasy. Heck, some trans people love cis swaps precisely because it's a cis swap instead of a specifically trans narrative, the same reason some trans people hate them. We're not all a monolith with one opinion. Thank god).
Going into your bookmarks to reveal the 'problematic' things you like to a bunch of randos screams of anti-nonsense, people who judge other people's morals based off the fiction they enjoy. Folks like this think it's okay to humiliate, degrade and abuse people over what they enjoy in fiction.
Honestly, if it were me, I'd block these people. Trans people aren't magically free from being abusive shitheads, just like everyone else.
Your friend may have been a friend once, but what they're doing now is just shitty. Ironically, it's also pretty transphobic to the trans people who love and write cis swap and also the trans people who love and read it.
@brummiereader Ahhhh Brummie! You've started! I'm so excited to hear your thoughts on this part! It's gonna be a wild one!
I love that first scene too! Even though it makes no sense for a phone booth to be in the middle of the country like that, the symbolism and general feeling around the whole scene was so well done in the show, and I really wanted to capture that same feeling here.
Lizzie's chilled out a little. She still has her occasional temper tantrums, and the events at the end of this chapter have absolutely triggered another one 🙄. No comment on the property scene sakjhfdjskgh 🤐.
Lucy and Charlie's relationship breaking down was one of the hardest things for me to write. She loves that little boy so much, but she understands why he's come to see Lizzie as more of his mom than her.
Part of me believes they do because they're the same person, that deals with thing in the same way. And another part of me believes it's because they couldn't possibly do it without the other. Like the saying "a problem shared is a problem halved".
You are absolutely right about this! Part of it is that they think and react to things very similarly, and also because they help to lighten the load that the other deals with.
They're so codependent on each other, and where some people might think that's not a healthy trait to have in a relationship, for Tommy and Lucy it's the only way for them to survive 😭❤️.
Absolutely, this! I am so glad that you think this! They are codependent, and maybe from an outsider's view it looks unhealthy, but to them, it isn't. They're happy and it's how they survive.
Ada jumps around a little in who she agrees with 😅. She agrees with Lizzie here in regards to Finn, but don't worry! She'll never agree with the abuse Lizzie's put Lucy through.
Agreed! I always felt like Lizzie was still an outsider. She was rarely kept in the loop on things.
Thank you so much for reading and commenting, Brummie! I really can't tell you enough how excited I am that you started this series! No rush to get caught up or anything--I know I'm posting these updates really fast--but I hope you enjoy the rest of it! 🥰
Part 26: Do You Love Me
Summary: Devastating news from Michael in America leads Tommy and Lucy to congregate with ghosts.
Word Count: 6,213
Warnings: Drug use, polyamory, animal death, and references to pregnancy.
Notes: This chapter is a little heavy on exposition, so sorry in advance for that. But there's a bit of a time jump between this and the previous part, so I wanted to make sure everyone was caught up on the dynamics between the characters before we really hit the ground running.
Chapter 1: Gathering Storm
The wind howled over the barren hills, pushing white wisps of mist across the landscape. There was hardly a tree in sight, and what little browned or yellowed grass there was trembled against the cold breeze. The phone booth that stood before them looked terribly out of place, red and man-made and screaming from within as the phone tucked inside its guts rang out.
Wraith’s hooves clomped against the hard ground, snorts and quiet whinnies sounding from his nose. His sides flexed against Lucy’s legs with each movement, betraying the powerful muscle encased under his deep black pelt.
Tommy eased him to a stop beside the phone booth and dismounted, handing her the reins. Lucy turned her head to look out at the wasteland of dirt and rolling hills around them as he ducked into the booth to pick up the still shrieking phone. Wind tugged lightly at her red curls and kissed icily at her freckled cheeks. Wraith snorted, shifting from foot to foot, dipping his enormous head, black mane twisting in the breeze. Lucy gave him a gentle pat to quell his impatience, watching the dark silhouette of Tommy’s body through the glass panes of the phone booth. Condensation beaded on the transparent material, leaving it blurry.
They had been out living on the land for a few days. Sleeping in vardos, eating what they were able to catch or forage, and languishing in the fresh air that was free from the smoke and soot of the city. Lizzie and the kids were with them, as was Johnny Dogs and some of his kin. All of whom were lingering back at the camp while she and Tommy went to take the prearranged phone call. It was nice. A much needed break of the usual insanity of their lives.
Well, it had been nice. All the way up until that business with Dangerous.
Lucy swallowed hard, adjusting her grip on Wraith’s reins. Poor, sweet, wild horse. Tommy had been nearly despondent when it became clear they would have to put him down. He had insisted on doing the deed alone, and when he came to her after it was done, there was a shakiness in his hands that only she knew him well enough to notice, and his eyes were unsteady and clouded over with grief and something dark and despairing.
The wind picked up a little, and the walls of the phone booth creaked and rattled. A foreboding death whistle sounded across the hills. Lucy shifted uncomfortably, adjusting the lay of her peaked cap on her head, trying to pull it down to protect her ears from the cold.
Tommy emerged from the booth a moment later, eyes sweeping across the muddied hills, taking in the gray clouds gathering in the sky. He looked tired, the face under the shadow of his cap drawn in and layered with stress.
“Everything alright?” she asked when he approached, scooting back in the saddle so that he could climb into the space in front of her on the stallion.
“Yeah. Arthur got a letter from the Angels of Retribution. They said that they hadn’t even heard of us, so I told Finn to send Aberama and Isiah to introduce themselves. But to stay out of it himself.”
“Good.” Isiah and Aberama were two of their soldiers that she trusted the most. Aberama had proven himself to be an invaluable asset. Shaped by experience, calculation, and ruthlessness. And Isiah…well, Isiah had been trained by her personally. “Ready to head back?”
Tommy took hold of the reins, sighing and looking out at the vast landscape around them. They could disappear out here, if they wanted to. Never to be seen again. “Yeah,” he said, in a voice that indicated the exact opposite. Lucy wrapped both arms around his waist, pressing her front to his back, holding onto him for both stability and comfort. He lowered one of his big palms to rest on top of hers where they clasped against his stomach, thumb rubbing her knuckles before taking hold of the reins. He snapped them once and drove his heels into Wraith’s sides, and the massive black stallion took off in a ferocious, booming gallop across the field.
They rode back the long way, neither of them saying anything as the wind whipped at their clothes. Lucy didn’t mind; she could sense that Tommy needed the time to think.
By the time they picked their way to the ridge overlooking where they had made camp, the wind had died down somewhat. Good thing, too. The cold was making her shoulders begin to ache with the pains that so often plagued them.
Looking down, she could see the little figures of Johnny and his boys moving amongst the wagons. They had dug a huge hole in the time that they’d been gone, a small mountain of dirt piled up next to it. The little lake shimmered in the sunlight. A dog barked.
Tommy brought Wraith to a stop, staring with his eyes fixed not on the hole Johnny and his men had dug, but the body wrapped in canvas next to it. Lucy gave him a small squeeze around the middle. Near the wagons, by where a table and chairs had been erected, she could see the tall, elegantly dressed figure of Lizzie looking up at them. Beside her, a smaller figure, hard to make out at this distance, but probably Ruby, turned her head to stare at the ridge.
In front of her, Tommy shifted, reaching into his pocket and procuring a small brown bottle, uncorking it.
“Can I have some?” she asked, after he took a small swig. He passed it back to her silently. The drug burned slightly as it entered her mouth and coated her throat. She was mindful not to drink too much; she was small, and it wouldn’t take a lot to have her flying high as a kite if she wasn’t careful. Handing back the vial to Tommy, he slid the cork back into place and pocketed it.
More and more often, they found themselves swigging from that little bottle.
Tommy nudged Wraith into moving again, and they started to follow the path descending the ridge, heading into the camp.
Once they arrived, Tommy dismounted first to be immediately greeted by Ruby running to him. He stooped, beckoning her to him and scooping her into his arms. Lizzie was right behind her daughter, moving to walk by Tommy’s side as he carried Ruby over to where the wagons were stationed. She gave a thin, barely perceptual smile to Lucy as she passed by the horse.
That was how things were these days, for the most part. Lizzie may have begrudgingly given her blessing for Tommy to remain seeing Lucy behind closed doors despite his marriage to her, but that did not mean she was particularly happy about it.
It was no secret that Tommy and Lizzie had problems. Lucy lived at Arrow House with them; she had a front row seat to all the shouting matches and bitter resentment that had plagued their marriage.
She had done her best not to get involved. Tommy and Lizzie’s relationship was their business, and she doubted that Lizzie would respond well to her meddling in it. But it was hard, with her proclivity to want to fix things for people, to not try to repair their strained union.
Things between her and Lizzie were…tumultuous. They’d had their share of rough patches here and there in the years since she and Tommy got married. Incidents like Lizzie asking Lucy to move rooms. It had been shortly after Lizzie and Ruby moved into Arrow House. Lizzie had wanted Ruby to have the room closest to the master bedroom should she need her in the middle of the night. Lucy hadn’t minded. Of course, she had assumed that Lizzie would have her moved to one of the unoccupied rooms further down the hall, not to the opposite end of the house. In a drafty, overlooked room. The drafts went unfixed for nearly a month, despite her bringing them up to Lizzie multiple times. It was only after Tommy took notice of them that they were finally dealt with.
Over time she’d grown used to Lizzie’s bursts of jealousy-induced passive aggression, even though it still always stung. Despite her attempts to not let it bother her. In the end, she really felt quite sorry for her, and massively guilty for the role she had undeniably played in amplifying her misery.
She should have put a stop to it all earlier, back when Lizzie was still a prostitute that she and Tommy frequented when looking for a bit of variety in their sex life. And especially after he had made Lizzie his secretary. And yet they still continued to intermediately sleep with her. That had been a mistake, and not just because of the pregnancy. It had led Lizzie on, and that hadn’t been fair.
And then they’d gone and made things even worse when Tommy married Lizzie.
They had not been dishonest about the arrangement that would come with the marriage. Tommy had not married Lizzie for love, but for convenience. Having an illegitimate child could hurt his image as a politician. And he needed a wife. Someone to run the house and care for the children while he was gone. And to help project the image of a traditional family to his constituents. Marrying her was the right, respectable thing for him to do. Lizzie would enjoy all the benefits of being Mrs. Shelby, but Tommy and Lucy would be continuing their relationship. They had all been clear on that. Lizzie had said that she was okay with that.
But Lizzie had always been in love with Tommy. Lucy had seen it in her eyes, years ago. And their current actions had done nothing but fan the flames of hope that Lizzie carried in her heart that someday, Tommy would love her the way that she wanted him to. Lucy sometimes wondered if Lizzie thought that if she wanted it badly enough, she’d be able to change him into the man that she wanted him to be.
Tommy had tried. Sort of. Lucy had seen it during the first year of his marriage to Lizzie. He had tried so hard to play the role of if not a loving and attentive husband, than at the very least a present and dutiful one. But as time went on and the mask slipped, he had ultimately given up the charade, resigning himself to a life with a wife who he didn’t love.
And then the bitterness and resentment came. There were days where things were better. Lucy could sit by the fire, giggling and playing cards or chess with Lizzie after the kids had gone to bed. But then there were days where even the smallest thing set Lizzie off, spewing cruel words at her or Tommy who, true to his nature, gave just as good as he got.
In all honesty, Arrow House was no longer the refuge that it had once been. She and Tommy were now relegated to quick and brief touches and kisses in the darkest corners of the house or else they risked Lizzie’s ire. Not that work was much different, as anything outside of strictly professional behavior could risk blowing up everything they had worked so hard to build these past few years. There was the apartment they had in London for when they worked too late to justify driving back to Birmingham, but often when they went there they were both too exhausted to do much more than sleep. It was with a bit of a startle that Lucy realized that she could not remember the last time they had done anything even remotely romantic outside of quick, almost mindless fucks.
One of Johnny’s boys came over to lead Wraith away by the reins, and Lucy remained securely seated in the saddle, resting a hand on the back of the irritable horse’s neck. Even after so many years, he didn’t take too kindly to strangers, and there was always a risk when someone unfamiliar tried to approach him that he would try to bite or kick. But with her still astride him, he behaved himself, letting Johnny’s boy guide him towards one of the wagons.
“I’ll do that,” she said to the man, dismounting with ease and taking the rope he was about to use to tie Wraith to the side of the vardo. He nodded respectfully, handing it over and walking around her to go help Johnny and his men haul the carcass of Dangerous into the grave they’d dug.
She’d just finished looping the rope into place, giving Wraith a companionable pat on the flank when she heard Charlie’s voice raise in an angry cry from where he, Tommy, Lizzie, and Ruby were all gathered at a nearby wagon,
“No! It’s what you do! Shoot horses, shoot people. Everybody says!” He stood, turned, and disappeared back into the wagon, stomping his little feet in a way that was eerily similar to his father.
Tommy winced, shoulders drawing in, expression locking down in a way that Lucy recognized as him working very hard not to let the hurt he was feeling show too obviously on his face. Straightening, he fetched a cigarette from his case and went to the hole where Dangerous’s body lay. After a moment’s hesitation, Ruby followed him.
“What happened?” Lucy asked in a quiet voice, going to stand by Lizzie, slipping off her gloves to tuck them away in her pocket.
“Charlie heard Johnny say in Rokka that Tommy shot the horse.”
“Oh.”
“He doesn’t understand that it was out of mercy. And he won’t listen to anyone who tries to explain it to him.”
Lucy sighed, pulling out and lighting a cigarette. “Well, at least we know he’s been paying attention when learning his languages.”
“Maybe you could try talking to him…”
She flicked ash down onto the grass. “He doesn’t really listen to me all that much these days.”
Lizzie looked down and away. Lucy thought she might’ve seen a flicker of guilt in her eyes.
There was a time when she and Charlie were close. She had known him since before he was born. And even prior to Grace’s death, she had been a second mother to him. Something both Tommy and Grace encouraged. Her lovers had wanted their son to see her as another parent, and so that was the position she had taken up in his life. Or at least tried to.
But things had shifted in the past few years. Some of it could be chalked up to just the boy growing up and that typical Shelby willfulness finally making itself known. She didn’t think, for all her faults and all the strife between them, that Lizzie had purposefully driven a wedge between her and Charlie. But working with Tommy in London meant that she wasn’t home as much, and with Lizzie always at Arrow House and functioning more often as his mother than Lucy was, things had changed. Slowly, they drifted apart. And now he hardly spoke to her. He called Lizzie Mum, but not her. Never her.
Lucy could not fault him for growing more partial to Lizzie. After all, she was the one who was always there, to help him with his schoolwork, attend his extracurriculars, mind that he ate his vegetables at dinner, and kiss his scraped knees when he fell playing in the garden. It made sense that he would grow closer to her, and that he would side with her when he saw just how much distress the arrangement between his three parents brought her. In his eyes, Lucy had to figure that she appeared to be the primary source of his mother’s pain.
Maybe she was.
Perhaps that was why she gave up so easily without a fight, letting him drift away from her with no protest. A way to try to atone for the agony she had caused Lizzie. She may have Lizzie’s husband, but Lizzie had her child.
She loved Charlie. She only ever wanted what was best for him, and right now, that was Lizzie. She would take care of him, offer him the closest thing to a normal, stable life that was possible for him to have.
It was better for him, this way. He deserved a better mother than the broken fragments that was all Lucy had to offer.
Despite her understanding of her boy’s–no, not hers, not anymore–changed emotions towards her, it hurt like a knife to the chest. She had loved him from the moment she first held him, had rocked him to sleep hundreds of times when he was a baby, had watched him grow up into the precocious little boy he was now. He was her baby. Or at least the closest she would ever have to one.
Of Tommy’s two children, Ruby was surprisingly the one who was warmer towards her these days. But then again, Ruby was sweet with everyone.
Turning her gaze back over to where Tommy stood by the unfilled grave with his daughter, she examined the lines of sorrow standing out starkly on his face as he gazed at the dead horse in the hole. She dropped her cigarette to the ground, grinding it under her heel, about to go to him when the growl of an approaching engine caught her attention. Her head turned, hand half raising to dip inside her coat to where her revolver sat in its holster tucked securely against her ribs, before she recognized it as Arthur’s car.
By the grave, Tommy had also noticed the car, ushering Ruby over towards Lizzie and moving to meet Arthur when he shut off the engine and jumped out of the driver’s seat. He had a newspaper in his hand.
Lucy moved to stand at Tommy’s side, craning her head around his shoulder to peer at the newspaper’s headline when Arthur handed it over.
BILLIONS LOST IN WALL STREET CRASH, it read, in huge black letters. Behind them, she could hear the scrape of shovels and the dull thud of dirt being dumped back into the hole.
Despite the headline, her stomach did not drop with horror. They had known that this was coming. Tommy had already instructed Michael to sell before the numbers of the stocks and shares collapsed, so they would be–generally speaking–unaffected.
It wasn’t until Arthur started speaking, explaining how Michael had ignored their advice in favor of that of a broker and held on, that her guts began to turn with outrage and dismay. Michael had held on. And taken them all down with him.
She exhaled roughly, taking a step back, slowly shaking her head. Oh, no. Oh, fucking no.
How much had they lost? Just trying to do the calculations in her head for a ballpark number made her temples start to hurt.
Oh, she was going to disembowel Michael fucking Gray.
Incompetent, arrogant, backstabbing fool. They should never have forgiven him for that shit he pulled during the vendetta. Banishment had been too kind a punishment for him.
“That idiot,” she seethed, looking to Tommy. “I’m going to kill him.”
The expression on his face said that he may very well let her. He started to tread back and forth, rubbing at his eyes, mumbling in a way she knew was more to himself than to any of them. His teeth were grinding together, jaw jumping under his skin. It did not take long before he was shouting, pacing the ground like an angry jaguar and raging.
“What do I have to do to make people fucking listen to me!?” he screamed into the wind, a hand going to clasp over his mouth as he paced a few more times then stilled, eyes staring with his mind spinning behind them.
And then he was jumping into action, sounding off orders to both Lizzie and Arthur with a snap of his fingers. He did not need to give Lucy her directions, she already knew them, reaching into her pocket to procure her leather gloves and slide them over her hands, gesturing to one of Johnny’s men to get Wraith where he was tied up.
“I need to do some thinking,” Tommy announced as he headed towards the horse with Arthur on his heels.
“Oh. Oh, you do that best on your own, don’t you, eh?” Arthur challenged, agitated.
“I won’t be on my own. I’m never on my own.” Tommy pulled himself into the saddle. “Lucy,” he said, and she was already there, reaching up to take his outstretched hand, the strength in his arm helping to leverage her up onto Wraith’s back behind him. He gave one last set of instructions to Lizzie, and a final parting word to Arthur, and then he was driving Wraith into a gallop deeper into the hills. This time, they did not head up to the top of the ridge, but instead towards the trees, Wraith’s canter slowing as they entered the dense thicket of foliage, the wilderness seemingly opening up, and swallowing them whole.
∗ ∗ ∗
“Do you want me to kill him?”
They were seated on a log in front of the dancing flames of the fire Tommy had ignited shortly after darkness fell over the forest. Lucy had her head on his shoulder, leaning against his side to soak in the warmth that radiated from his body.
“Hm,” Tommy hummed, fingertips stroking where they rested on her upper arm, cheek turning against the top of her head. She had to bite back a smile at the clear consideration in his voice. “Not yet. Not until we know what really happened.”
“He’s a snake.”
“He’s an idiot. But that doesn’t mean this was a purposeful betrayal.”
“Yeah,” she agreed with a sigh, adjusting her head on him. Tommy picked at a sprig of mint held in his gloved hands, pulling off a few of the green leaves and popping them into his mouth. Wraith snorted from where he was tied to a nearby tree. “I still don’t trust him.”
Tommy tossed the remainder of the sprig away. “Me neither.”
Before them, the fire popped and crackled. Lucy grabbed a few bits of kindling that they’d collected to feed into the flames.
“I hate to add more onto your plate, but I got a message from Ada’s doctor earlier.” Every day since they’d been out in the country, she went to the red phone booth to take messages from Frances, Isiah, and their other various informants. “She’s pregnant.”
Tommy sighed deeply, but didn’t appear surprised. “Younger’s?”
“The doctor didn’t know, but I would assume so. Who else could it be? Not that it affects things all that much. I just thought you should know. So you don’t get blindsided by it later.”
“Thank you.”
They fell into companionable silence again. He had been quiet since they took off into the woods, busy in his head working on all the new problems Michael had just created for them. Lucy offered suggestions and insights when prompted, but otherwise just let him be, knowing after so many years together that her presence at his side was all he needed while he strategized.
He shifted, reaching into his pocket to once more procure the little bottle of dope he kept tucked away there. Uncorking it, he handed it over to her first. Lucy took it gratefully, the glass cold against her fingers as she brought it to her lips and tilted her head back to take a swig. Almost immediately, she felt her mind begin to loosen, the corners of her eyesight growing fuzzy.
She handed the bottle back to Tommy. There wasn’t much left; and he downed the remainder of the drug, tossing the empty bottle into the fire uncaringly. His arm went around her once more, the solid strength of it holding her to his side. Lucy snuggled in close, grateful for the comfort and heat, hoping that she could offer the same to him.
Her eyes closed, and together, they waited for the ghost.
She did not need to open her eyes to know once she had arrived. She could sense the way that the air around them seemed to shift, the weight of another presence appearing across the fire from them heavy despite her lack of a corporeal body.
Tommy spoke to her a little, and she responded in her gentle Irish lilt. Lucy could hear the smile on her face. The love in her voice.
Quick as she appeared in front of them, she was suddenly behind them, her arms encircling them. Solid and real, though they shouldn’t have been. Her body was nothing but ash, spreading into the wind, and yet she was there, holding them as though she had never left.
“All this time…” Tommy murmured, reaching to hold onto the ghost tighter.
“I know. Our love still remains,” Grace said. Lucy felt tears squeeze from her eyes to roll down her cheeks. Grace’s hand petted the back of her head.
She had been coming to them both more and more often lately. They had each seen her on rare occasions before, but now it was a regular occurrence. Probably because of the dope.
Shared hallucinations, or real? It didn’t really matter. She was there. She was speaking to them and holding them. Things were as they once were, before she and their only real chance at happiness was ripped away from them.
She was gone as quickly as she arrived, leaving nothing but cold air where she once stood over them. Lucy snatched at the empty space where her hand had been settled on her dead lover’s waist, lips trembling. Instead she latched onto Tommy, feeling him maneuver her so that her head was in his lap. He hugged her tighter, face bowing to bury in her hair, and there in the dark, she felt through their bond the true heavy weight of his despair crashing down onto them both, and the dampness of his salty tears dripping onto her scalp to seep into her skin.
∗ ∗ ∗
By morning, they had a plan mapped out. Not a particularly desirable or moralistic one, but then again, few of their strategies ever really were.
It would sustain them until the current financial crisis was over, at the very least.
The first meeting on the subject was held at the Shelbys’ office in Birmingham. The long table in the conference room was already occupied by Polly, Ada, Arthur, Linda, Lizzie, and Leon Greene when Lucy and Tommy arrived. Lucy raised an eyebrow at the tension she felt already crackling in the air and shared a look with Tommy as she sat down in the chair to the right of his.
The meeting went over well enough, despite Linda’s snobbish remarks and attempts to undercut Tommy at every turn. She’d been getting worse, ever since Arthur became chairman of the board. Like she thought that it was her husband who ought to be king, instead of Tommy.
The idea made Lucy want to roll her eyes so hard in her head that they were at risk of popping out. She loved Arthur to pieces, she really did. But he was not suited to the position of leading the empire Tommy had built.
Lucy did not speak much during the meeting, though she almost jumped across the conference table to throttle Linda at multiple points. Instead, she relegated herself to the sidelines, watching and listening quietly, as she so often did. Examining the faces of those seated around the table as Tommy explained their current financial situation, and his proposal for what they were to do to try to mitigate it.
At the end of the meeting, all of them–except for Linda who had already stormed out–voted unanimously to go forward with Tommy’s plan.
Not that there had ever been any doubt that they would.
The next meeting was for family only. They left Mr. Greene back at the office while the rest of them stepped out into the smoky air of Small Heath, heading for the Garrison. They entered the pub to rapturous cheers and applause, people immediately swarming around Tommy, eager to shake his hand and thank him for the work he’d been doing.
Lucy watched him work the room, effortlessly charming each person who approached him. By the time he raised his voice to address the entire population residing in the pub, he had them all in the palm of his hand. He probably could have told them all to walk into the canal and they would have done so without question.
His request that they move into the saloon bar attached to the pub, albeit with the incentive of a promise of free drinks, was met with more cheers, the patrons hurrying towards the doors. Ada, Polly, and Lizzie all went to convene in one of the booths while Tommy leaned his shoulder against a nearby pillar, and Arthur went to sit in a chair at a table next to the booth. Lucy moved to close the doors leading into the saloon bar once all the patrons were packed inside, flicking the lock into place. Then she pulled up a chair between Arthur and Tommy, shedding her coat to lay over the back of it before sitting.
The meeting started off with Ada drawing a bullet from the depths of her handbag and setting it down on the table in front of her. Followed by an announcement that not only had Finn disobeyed them about staying out of the hit they’d ordered in Chinatown, and as a result ended up on Ada’s couch with a bullet in his arm, but he’d also completely spilled his guts to her as far as the details of what he’d been doing there.
Fucking kid needed a lesson in how to keep his damn mouth shut.
But the damage had been done, and Ada and Lizzie were both well and truly furious about the whole thing.
“Oh, Tommy, sweetheart,” Lizzie shook her head. Lucy raised her eyebrows at the term of endearment. “I listen to you. I listen to you when you tell me no more sport for anyone named Shelby. I listen to you when you make me promises.”
Lucy looked down at her hands, unconsciously playing with the plain golden rings that encircled several of her fingers. Guilt twisted inside her like a snake, writhing and squirming. How many of those promises had Tommy broken, in the years since they’d been married?
How many times had it been her fault when he did?
He tried to explain why he’d sent their boys into Chinatown, but that only seemed to fan the flames of Lizzie and Ada’s mounting anger.
“Jesus Christ, Tommy!” Lizzie snarled, slamming her hand down on the leather material lining the bench of the booth.
“I think that you both are overreacting a little here,” Lucy decided to finally speak. “It’s not that big of a deal. And it’s not that different from the type of thing we used to do all the bloody time. Finn’s fine, an asshole pimp is dead, and we’re about to make a hefty hunk of cash for carrying out the hit.”
“It was a particular opportunity.” Lucy started a little when, of all people, Polly chimed in. Polly, who hated her. Who had never accepted her. And yet, who had just spoken up in agreement with her.
Lizzie’s eyes darted between her, Lucy, and Tommy. Something dawned on her face, and then her features hardened into a deadly expression that Lucy had become all too familiar with.
“But you told Polly and Lucy,” was all she said in response to the additional explanation that Tommy tried to give her, her voice cold as ice. And despite Polly, Arthur, and Tommy all starting to speak with further details and justifications for the whole thing, all it took was one look at Lizzie’s face and Lucy knew not a single word was actually getting through to her. She was too focused on that one detail: that her husband had told his lover and his aunt information that she believed herself to be entitled to know instead.
She would be chewing on that for the remainder of the week. Probably even longer.
“Lizzie, you need to understand–” Tommy started, but didn’t get very far.
“That you tell Lucy and Polly, but not me.” Her jaw was clenched in a way that Lucy knew meant she was fighting very hard to keep the venom she wanted to spit at them from spewing out. Probably the only reason why it hadn’t already was because they were amongst others. If they’d been in private, she’d have told them both exactly what she thought of them.
As if they didn’t know already.
Tommy’s further attempts to smooth things over went about as well as Lucy expected. Once Lizzie got into one of her moods, she could be impossible to reason with. It was better to just leave her alone until it passed.
“Lizzie, if Finn had listened to me, you wouldn’t have known. When we go home, I’ll explain,” Tommy tried. Lucy cringed, already knowing that was the wrong thing to say even before Lizzie scoffed and started to gather up her things.
She stood, muttering, “I can’t be bothered with this shit,” loud enough for everyone to hear, before storming out the door. Lucy rolled her eyes. All this whining and complaining about not being kept in the loop on things, and yet every time she did have the opportunity to be involved, she acted as if it was the last thing she was actually interested in doing.
Fuck, she was not looking forward to dealing with her and the earful she was sure they were due to get when they got home. Maybe it would be better for them to stay away for a few days to let Lizzie cool off. They could sleep over at their apartment in London instead of going home to Arrow House.
It didn’t take long for Ada to follow Lizzie in storming out. Lucy watched her go, rubbing at one of her temples to try to stave off the headache she felt coming on. Jesus Christ, what was with all the cunty attitude today?
Tommy came to sit down in the vacant chair next to Lucy, leaning forward as Polly urged him to go easy on Ada on account of her pregnancy. It wasn’t all that surprising that Polly knew. Even if Ada hadn’t told her yet, Polly always knew when someone was pregnant.
In fact, the only one left at that table who didn’t know was Arthur, who almost choked on his whiskey at the revelation.
Polly left not long after that, though not before all but confirming to them that Ben Younger was the father of Ada’s baby. Lucy shared another knowing look with Tommy as he stood and slid into the booth, occupying the spot near the window where Polly had been a moment ago. Lucy shimmied in next to him, the red leather creaking a little under her as she got situated at his side. Arthur poured three glasses of whiskey, passing two of them across the table to her and Tommy.
Lucy sipped quietly at her drink while the brothers examined and discussed the bullet that had been ripped out of Finn’s arm.
“Let me see,” she held out her hand for the bullet when Arthur asked about the writing on it. She squinted at the tiny characters carved into the metal. “Hm. My Chinese isn’t fantastic, but I think this one just says ‘death.’” She handed it back to Arthur.
“Angels of Retribution?” he asked Tommy.
“Yeah,” he kept turning his gaze out the window. Outside, Lucy could hear the sounds of horse’s hooves clomping against the cobbles and children chattering. She inched a little closer to him, until their sides just barely brushed. It was only them and Arthur; no need to try too hard to hide their relationship.
“No one fucking listens to me,” Tommy lamented softly, leaning back with his head tilted towards the ceiling. Lucy nudged him companionably.
“I do.”
He shot her a soft look, hand smoothing down the back of her head, leaning forward to kiss her hairline. His unspoken gratitude hummed between them warmly. He gave her a gentle tap on the back to let her know it was time to go after taking the bullet from Arthur and pocketing it. Lucy slipped out of the booth, going to grab her coat and tug it back on, wincing at a slight twinge in her shoulders as she did.
“See you later, Arthur,” she said in goodbye to the eldest Shelby brother where he was still sat in the booth. Tommy gave him a pat on the shoulder, telling him to let the patrons in the saloon bar come back in if they wanted, and then led the way outside, into the smoke and soot of Small Heath.
hey gamers. for a lot of people, i'm the dragon quest mutual.
this november 14th, Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake releases on pc, ps5, xbox series x|s and switch.
dragon quest is considered to be the first jrpg and having defined the genre. the first one is not that great though as i'm sure you can imagine for a first game of its kind from 1986. in 1987, dragon quest ii was released and greatly improved on the first game and even later that year, the first final fantasy released, really helping to pull everything together.
then, in 1988, dragon quest iii released for the famicom and this is was a real defining moment for every jrpg since. i'm not a game historian but i understand it was largely influential to rpgs as a whole.
while most dragon quest games are unrelated to the previous games plotwise and none of the previous dq games need to be played, the first 3 are all related and involve a legendary hero known as Erdrick (Roto in japan) and are thus known as the erdrick/roto trilogy. however, for reasons i won't explain in case anyone doesn't know and doesn't want to be spoiled, dragon quest iii can be played first of this trilogy/
now, the dragon quest series has not had a great history with localisation before the publishers, enix, merged with square to form square enix as we know them today. prior to this, the dragon quest series was known as dragon warrior in the west due to unavailability of the name dragon quest in the US. these localisations also lacked the goofy charm and only one spin-off made it to europe.
the release history of this trilogy is notable, i'll provide screenshots from my spreadsheet detailing releases across 3 major regions:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
now see, the snes versions were considered the best versions but as you can see, they were never localised. and even if they had been, that was during the dragon warrior era. the first time modern localisations released in the west and just any version in europe was with the versions for android and ios in 2014. most people don't wanna play a game originally designed for home consoles on their phone though. in which case they had to wait till 2019 for the switch versions (which had yet to be anounced when i played them myself).
it should be noted that, i think most western dq fans are unaware but, the 2019 switch versions are ports of the 2017 versions released simultaneously for ps4 and 3ds which are all similar to the android and ios versions. these are all... just... alright versions. very lame compared to others but okay and decent (they're at least reasonably priced for what they are).
the point is, it SUCKS that its taken so long for these iconic pieces of rpg history to get quality versions and localised with modern localised versions. dq3 hd-2d remake was even originally revealed in 2021 and we've had to wait 3 years to get an update on them.
BUT these are INSANELY GOOD versions holy FUCK i have been following this closely for a while.
if you want to play an iconic piece of rpg history, if you played dq11 as the newest and most welcoming to newcomers and wanted to play the trilogy it calls back to most (if you played to the true ending, you know), if you want to start on this series in release order... well dragon quest i & ii hd-2d remake releases next year i guess you can always come back to this, if you played some of the inferior versions and want to see this game done justice, if you just want to play a pretty game, THE TIME IS NEARLY UPON US.
let me set the scene: EHEM.
the world is threatened by the archfiend, Baramos. your father, Ortega, a revered hero, left on a quest to slay the archfiend and never returned. it's your 16th birthday. you're now old enough to pick up your father's quest. set out, explore the world, find out what happened to Ortega, and SLAY BARAMOS. そして伝説へ… (soshite densetsu e...) AND THUS INTO LEGEND...
youtube
note: dragon quest iii differs from most dragon quest games in that you make your own custom party members. previously these characters have an appearance for their current vocation and then had 2 possible looks, as with the hero, for their gender. although most dragon quest games don't feature gender options, those that do like dragon quest iii, have switched of an ungendered type A and type B in new releases (since 2021 i believe). the custom party members from dragon quest iii also have received a type C and type D for more customisation. plus there's a new vocation now! the monster wrangler was not in previous versions of dq3. see the overview trailer:
youtube
some people aren't happy with dragon quest's "censorship," ungendering the appearance options and removing the exaggerated lips from the trolls that resembled racist caricatures. this is not the first dragon quest game to receive either of these changes but every official post about this one is getting some stupid comments from these people.
