Insurance in the US is *required* to cover all types of birth control including surgical (eg tubal ligation) *for now.* Absolutely try to get it and get the procedure done ASAP
https://www.healthcare.gov/coverage/birth-control-benefits/
thank u. i do need to sign up for that.
#asks#vergess#insurance#my worry is. even if they have to cover it. they will find stupid loopholes i will be too tired and stressed to pushback on#like when i had insurance through my other job and they stopped covering my daily asthma inhaler for a cheaper one instead#and if i wanted them to cover it id have to like. prove that the cheaper one wasnt effective or smth? but. i had enough extra for some#reason that i never got around to trying the cheaper one and now im not insured by them anymore cos i quit that job and had a cobra hiccup#so ive been rawdogging the healthcare system and getting by okay for now but liiiike. not a sustainable situation#id RATHER get a hysterectomy but that feels. far more unattainable. like i think id have to fight my parents on it and possibly doctors#without my parents backing me up. while living in their house. bc im 'young' and unmarried and childless so i could 'change my mind'#idk ill be 27 this year can i call myself an old hag yet? when do i finally get to be too old to change my mind cos i want the fucking#thing outttt. ugh. and id worry that insurance would pull some shit where theyre like well it WOULD be covered if it was NECESSARY but we#LOOKED INTO IT and you have no problems with the pill AND youre not even HAVING SEX theres NO REASON!#one of my coworkers was told her surgery for smth else was covered and now that its done and shes recovering theyre trying to be like uhm#actuallyyyyyyyyyyy its notttttt covered we changed our mind#idk#i have therapy today and shes been offering to help me navigate healthcare dot gov so maybe ill ask her. idk#i also hesitate to ask my pcp bc i know my mom has access to my medical info cos its Usually just more convenient#i need to get my shit together enough to be able to move out. and exist.#like theyre fine. unless they arent. sigh#anyway thanks for the info it is helpful

i'm kind of pedantic about the words normal and common just bc i think it really often leads to misconceptions about disabilities and chronic illnesses, bc like, in my experience, it is incredibly common to have problems with your body, in fact i think Not having any issues is more uncommon. as amazing as human bodies are, there is so much that can go wrong. and most of the time, for most people, they can still get by. and that's just life.
so like yes it is common to struggle. it should also be common to receive help for these struggles. and if this kind of help is more normalized and accessible, then hopefully people with higher support needs won't have to jump through hoops just to have their basic fucking needs met.
i think many people see it like you either are or are not disabled. and if you don't meet their arbitrary standard for what counts as disabled, then you need to just suck it up and deal with it. bc that is the attitude they apply in their own life. but like it obviously does not work that way. everything exists on a spectrum. getting help in life should be standard, some people will need more help, some people might not need much at all.
#personal#and to lessen the othering of disabled people as if they are inherently a distinct group#like no doubt there are many disabilities that make people's lives fundamentally different#but i think a lot of times people struggle with existing as a disabled person in society#like if people received proper accommodations and had affordable accessible healthcare they would be able to function just fine#idk i'm at work rn and i'm having thoughts

just had a thought that universal healthcare would be better for the environment because if there’s more people like me who want to live out in the countryside or who want to try homesteading or living off the grid but are tied to the city because of their job benefits, giving everyone free healthcare would free them up to live wherever they choose and something something less people in cities the better
#personally i think the two biggest things we could do that would benefit the most people and the environment would be universal healthcare &#and a widespread high speed rail system along all the highways and freeways#i know it’s logistically unlikely to be approved but i think we should take the middle two lanes out of every freeway/stroad and put#rails there#so that the people who would normally commute on those roads would be able to take the train instead#the roads are already there we have the arterial paths but nobody wants to shrink the roads#so every urban light rail project (at least here) has to go underground#i believe that since fast travel is required for most jobs and fast long distance travel is a necessity to visit relatives#it should be cheap and accessible to all#and we should ban private jets for everyone but maybe heads of state (because they need to stay alive for their whole term)#and also space travel shouldn’t be privately owned because of the enormous environmental impact#and its potential benefit to humankind in terms of scientific research#anyways travel#families live so spread out now compared to earlier generations and i think it’s necessary for us to be able to see each other regularly

Hello everyone, I have another campaign to share.
Asmaa and her family are fighting to survive in Ghazza. Her home and her brother's home were both bombed by the occupation, leaving all of them displaced.
They live in horrible conditions without access to clean water, food, or healthcare. The closest medical setup is usually miles away. They are surrounded by disease and their tents hardly protect them from the elements. Their beloved kitten Timur starved to death due to the lack of food and water.
Without any sources of income, they cannot evacuate on their own.
In order to evacuate, Asmaa and her family need to raise €45,000. Since beginning their campaign, they've only raised €21,459.
Everyone, please help Asmaa and her family survive. If you're able, donate to them. Even if you can't donate, sharing their campaign will also make a world of difference. Anything you can do will help shave their lives.
VETTED HERE (43)
(content warning for the campaign page; there is an image of the dead kitten. It is not overly graphic but if you would like to avoid it simply don't scroll down)

I first posted this in a thread over on BlueSky, but I decided to port (a slightly edited version of) it over here, too.
Entirely aside from the absurd and deeply incorrect idea [NaNoWriMo has posited] that machine-generated text and images are somehow "leveling the playing field" for marginalized groups, I think we need to interrogate the base assumption that acknowledging how people have different abilities is ableist/discriminatory. Everyone SHOULD have access to an equal playing field when it comes to housing, healthcare, the ability to exist in public spaces, participating in general public life, employment, etc.
That doesn't mean every person gets to achieve every dream no matter what.
I am 39 years old and I have scoliosis and genetically tight hamstrings, both of which deeply impact my mobility. I will never be a professional contortionist. If I found a robot made out of tentacles and made it do contortion and then demanded everyone call me a contortionist, I would be rightly laughed out of any contortion community. Also, to make it equivalent, the tentacle robot would be provided for "free" by a huge corporation based on stolen unpaid routines from actual contortionists, and using it would boil drinking water in the Southwest into nothingness every time I asked it to do anything, and the whole point would be to avoid paying actual contortionists.
If you cannot - fully CAN NOT - do something, even with accommodations, that does not make you worth less as a person, and it doesn't mean the accommodations shouldn't exist, but it does mean that maybe that thing is not for you.
But who CAN NOT do things are not who uses "AI." It's people who WILL NOT do things.
"AI art means disabled people can be artists who wouldn't be able to otherwise!" There are armless artists drawing with their feet. There are paralyzed artists drawing with their mouths, or with special tracking software that translates their eye movements into lines. There are deeply dyslexic authors writing via text-to-speech. There are deaf musicians. If you actually want to do a thing and care about doing the thing, you can almost always find a way to do the thing.
Telling a machine to do it for you isn't equalizing access for the marginalized. It's cheating. It's anti-labor. It makes it easier for corporations not to pay creative workers, AND THAT'S IS WHY THEY'RE PUSHING IT EVERYWHERE.
I can't wait for the bubble to burst on machine-generated everything, just like it did for NFTs. When it does some people are going to discover they didn't actually learn anything or develop any transferable skills or make anything they can be proud of.
I hope a few of those people pick up a pencil.
It's never too late to start creating. It's never too late to actually learn something. It's never too late to realize that the work is the point.
#AI#writing#just fucking do it#if you want to be a writer then write#literally no one can do it for you#especially not machine-generated text machines#the work is the point

What progress at home has biden enacted? What policies of his show that he is making progress that prove he is actually different than trump?
I like to pretend I have faith in humanity, so I'll answer as if you're asking this in good faith.
Biden's DEA has lifted restrictions on telehealth prescriptions to make appointments and assistance more accessible.
He put a funding package into place to help unhoused people get access to mental and physical healthcare, as well as short-term and long-term housing.
He has attempted and is still attempting to get student debt relief through - this was blocked by Republican judges appointed by Trump, but he's still working on it.
Infrastructure repair - his administration has budgeted funds to actually fix some severely-damaged and frequently-traveled bridges.
Trying to expand access to healthcare to include undocumented immigrants who came to the USA as children (Dreamers) under the Affordable Care Act. Support for Navigator programs and outreach has also been increased.
He has vetoed Republican-led bills that were attempting to overturn environmental protections - one that would have forbidden investment fund managers to consider climate change in their portfolios (I have two degrees in accounting and this is actually huge), and another that would have overturned restrictions on agricultural runoff into our waterways.
He and his administration worked for ages to get rail workers paid sick days.
This is just some of what he's been doing. Meanwhile, Trump and other Republicans want to criminalize the lives of LGBT people like you and me. They want to eliminate no-fault divorce and force births that will kill parents or devastate them financially. They have stated flat out that they want to install a military dictatorship in the USA. They attempted to put that in motion on January 6th, 2021. They failed once. They will do better next time.
One party wants to house the homeless and expand social safety nets, while the other one wants to criminalize homelessness. One of them wants a future in which I might be able to vote to change how much of a war machine my country is, while the other one wants to eliminate my ability to vote entirely. Those are not the same. Those literally are opposites.
At the end of the day, all you and I can do is choose to do the least amount of harm possible. You and I cannot choose to do no harm. This is the USA, we sell war, you and I cannot choose to do no harm. I wish we could, my god do I wish we could, but that is not an option. So we grieve for the harm we couldn't eliminate and work to minimize the harm that is done. Despite all the crap they support, Democrats are the minimum amount of harm right now. Acting like they aren't is exactly what brought us to an election where our options are a future where we are either wading in blood or drowning in it.
Not voting for Biden will not help Palestine. Not voting for Biden will guarantee a Republican president who will make the situation in Palestine WORSE. AND it'll hurt a lot of other places as well, both at home and abroad, because Republicans are about business and the USA is in the business of war! And I would very much like that to change someday! I would very much like to someday be able to choose to do no harm! And I know what I have to do to try for that future, so what are YOU going to do? There is no standing off to the side in this. If you aren't helping pull, you're the dead weight we're pulling. Are you going to dig your feet into the mud and blood and drown us there? Or are you going to get the fuck off your ass, grit your teeth, and help us pull free?
#askbasket#iam-the-wild#us politics#israel#palestine#if you do not vote blue you do not get to call yourself an antifascist#i HATE that that's the case; don't mistake me#but that is the reality we're working with#there isn't any other#do nothing and kill five people or act and kill one.#so what are you gonna do? i can't choose for you. but i know what my choice is.#i'm part of this world. and as much as i hate it...turning away is not one of the options.#we fight on ALL fronts#we protest we donate we write we call#AND WE ALSO FUCKING VOTE FOR THE LEAST OF THE EVILS. BECAUSE NO EVIL IS NOT AN OPTION.

one of those masterposts for Sudan 🇸🇩
Disclaimer: I am not Sudanese, and am in no way an expert on the ongoing crisis. Corrections, if any, are welcome.
LAST UPDATED: 8th October 2024 [Please try to reblog the original post as much as possible]
~
So what's going on in Sudan? Sudan was under the rule of the military dictator Omar Al-Bashir for thirty years. He came to power through a military coup in June 1989. His rule saw extreme economic decline, repression, and conflict. In the December of 2018, a democratic revolution began that eventually overthrew the dictatorship on April 11, 2019, and saw the beginning of a military rule by militant parties SAF (Sudanese Armed Forces) and RSF (Rapid Support Forces). This unrest is, of course, funded by western governments.
On the 15th of April, 2023, fighting broke out in Khartoum between the SAF and RSF. Clashes spread across the nation of Sudan, and the civilian populace is still caught in the middle. According to UN officials, Sudan is in “one of the worst humanitarian nightmares in recent history."
There is an ongoing war in Sudan, and it's getting worse. There is a health crisis along with the humanitarian crisis as well: around 2/3rds of the population do not have access to healthcare services. Around 15-20 millions suffer from hunger. There are 70 non-operational healthcare facilities in conflict zones. Thousands killed, millions displaced, and a dramatic increase in sexual violence and rape cases.

Me and my wife need help getting back on our feet since after she almost died from pulmonary embolisms and deep vein thrombosis last year and subsequently was denied access to transitional healthcare because of the health complications that nearly killed her.
We need money to buy hormones online for my wife to be able to continue her transition after getting cut off due to arbitrary risks involving her V-Leiden (even though she is on Eliquis every day and monitored for new clots yearly) and the lack of informed consent laws. The amount of refills I get through my prescription is not enough to support both of us when they're incredibly stringent about how much they're prescribing you at a time.
My wife also desperately needs to see a dentist. Her dental decay has been getting much worse lately due to us not having the financial means for her to have them fixed. She recently had a horizontal crack in her front incisor which has made it impossible for her to eat, something that was already incredibly difficult with her only being able to chew with one side of her mouth due to multiple broken teeth and an impacted wisdom tooth causing the cap from her root canal to fall out.
We're drowning and can't afford to pay for emergency expenses with rent for our mold-infested apartment and rising costs of living eating up practically our entire income every month, it seems almost impossible to move on and get better being stuck in our current situation.
If anyone is capable of helping out it would mean the world to us.
our paypals: queensizeddonger & loserbigsis
$0 / $????
(we have no way to assess the actual costs yet since just seeing a dentist to get an estimate would cost around $100)
Photos below the cut (trigger warning: broken teeth & dental decay)

Help Wafaa, Mohi, and Fidaa!
This is Mohi: the brother of @wafaaresh. Both of their gofundme's are hosted by a friend in Baltimore, and both accounts have been vetted. Mohi is only 23 and is currently suffering from malnutrition and hepatitis due to the current bombardment of Gaza. Their mother suffers from chronic illnesses that they cannot find treatment or urgently needed surgery for. They lack access to food and clean, drinkable water.
As I write this, not even a third of his goal of 31,000 dollars has been reached, and Wafaa's goal of 100,000 has a mere tenth raised. They both lost their home, a good chunk of their family, and have been displaced over 10 times.
The high in Gaza is nearly 90 Fahrenheit for the next week, with 70% humidity. There is no shade. There is no drinkable water. Aid is being blocked from entering.
This is Wafa's new gofundme.
Note: She had to make a new campaign after issues with the old one. There are barely any donations at the moment.
Wafa is 29 and reached out to me to ask me to boost her campaign, and since I cannot donate, I am making this post to promote both her and her brother's fundraisers.
They are both young adults who had so many ambitions and hopes before the attacks began. And there is still hope for them to escape live freely, like every human deserves to live.
If you are able to spare a few bucks, even a donation of 5 or 10 dollars helps. I hope this post finds people who are able to donate. Nobody deserves to live like this.
(I recently learned of their sister, Fidaa. I will continue editing this post if I find gofundme's for other family members, so people don't have to wade through a million different reblogs to find them.)
This is Fidaa @fidaa-family2 , she is Wafaa and Mohi's sister. She is 29 and a mother of 2: Sila, her 2 year old, and Muhammed Amr, who is only 2 months old. Imagine going through this trauma at 2 years old, imagine going through this at 2 months old. Imagine giving birth in these conditions, where the healthcare system has been so destroyed they cannot even count the dead. It's unimaginable for many of us, but for them, it is their daily life.
They live in Mawasi Khan Younis, South of Gaza. She and her children are malnourished and have little to no access to medicine, especially what is necessary post-partum, let alone necessary for a malnourished baby!
She has raised a little over a third of her 10,000 dollar goal.
If this post reaches enough people who can and do donate, their family can live freely. No bombs, no disease, no thirst, no hunger. Their children can grow up happily, the way all children should. And I do believe that it is possible.
Again, please donate if it is at all possible. No donation is too small, nor too big. Everything counts.
**I'd like to add a note here not about the family, but about Palestine and Israel. I am not versed enough to decide whether there should be a two state solution, one state and which one, whatever. I'm 15, my opinions do not do jack shit. All I will say is innocent people are dying just for being palestinian and I'm against that.
I also know the current pro palestine movement has a major problem with antisemitism, which I previously engaged with due to ignorance and ignoring dogwhistles. I have since learned and am working to avoid doing so again, as I know I shared harmful content in an attempt to uplift a separate group, and that was wrong of me.
For now, all I can really say is Palestinians don't deserve to die, the IDF has committed war crimes, and that is not the fault of Jewish people. It's the fault of the Israeli government and military, not the citizens or people of the same ethnicity or religion. I won't tolerate bigotry towards either group on my page.**

the reality that being chronically ill makes me feel lonelier and more hopeless than anything else in the world is really hitting today
#i want to scream-cry but my body won't let me 😍#it's like. i've spent so like being sad about this and now the only thing i can really fully feel is anger#because it doesn't have to be this way!!!!#imagine if we had universal healthcare! imagine if people gave a single shit about chronically ill/disabled people!#imagine if people widely acknowledged my condition exists and imagine if insurance would fucking cover the testing and treatments i need#i'm too sick to work ''normal'' hours anymore which means i don't have money to get better or go back to school to try to find a better job#i know this isn't like. news to most people. it's not news to me either. but idk. it's really hitting me today.#at least when i was a kid struggling a lot with my mental health i knew there was shit i could do about it even if it was really hard#not to say being mentally ill isn't also terrible i was just privileged enough to have access to therapy and medication at the time#but i can't change the way things are done in this country and i can't force able-bodied people to give a shit about these issues#idk. what is the point of any of this?

Please don't skip 🇵🇸🚨🚨
Hello my friend
My name is Shatha, and I am reaching out to you from Gaza. I am a 24-year-old mother, married with two young children, Karam and Kareem. Today, I am compelled to share our story with you, in the hopes of finding the support we desperately need.😥🙏🙏🙏
My youngest son, Kareem, just one year old, has been facing significant health challenges since birth. He suffers from growth and muscular development weakness, a result of oxygen deficiency during his delivery. Prior to the outbreak of conflict in Gaza, Kareem received vital therapy sessions at our local hospital, under the careful guidance of specialized doctors. However, with the devastating impact of the current conflict, most hospitals in Gaza are now out of service, and access to essential healthcare has become nearly impossible😥😥😥
Each passing day brings a new level of urgency as Kareem's health deteriorates. He requires immediate evacuation from Gaza to access the specialized medical care he urgently needs, care that simply cannot be provided within our war-torn region.😭
The situation for my family has become increasingly dire. Our home was severely damaged by shelling, and my husband lost his job due to the ongoing conflict. Forced to flee our northern Gaza residence, we now find ourselves residing in Deir al-Balah city, living in a small tent that offers little protection and lacks even the most basic amenities. This challenging environment, compounded by Kareem's fragile health, the prevalence of infectious diseases, and widespread food shortages, has only exacerbated our struggles.💔💔
As a mother, my heart aches to see my son suffer. My priority is Kareem's health and the safety of my family amidst the chaos of war. Yet, the financial burden and logistical challenges of leaving Gaza are overwhelming.😥😭
It is with humility and hope that I reach out to you, appealing to your generosity and compassion. Your support can help Kareem access the life-saving medical treatment he so urgently needs by assisting us in evacuating Gaza. Your kindness would not only bring relief to our family but also restore hope for Kareem's future.🙏🙏❤️❤️❤️
Thank you, from the depths of our hearts, for considering our plea and for any support you may be able to provide. Your contribution, no matter the size, would mean the world to us.🙏❤️🌹🌹🇵🇸
With sincere gratitude,
Shatha

The Australian Federal Government is considering adding gender affirming surgeries for transgender adults to the medicare benefits scheme thanks to an application made by the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons.
the president of the ASPA, Dr Nicola Dean, chatted with me about the need for improved access to gender affirming healthcare, and I was also able to speak to some trans people in the community who would benefit from this change.
