running errands with nerdy boyfriend luigi???? 😭
YURRRRR
to be honest, i think it would be luigi’s favorite thing to do with you. i think he’d really like the simplicity and domesticity of it. he doesn’t care much for going on fancy dinner dates, or going on expensive couple vacations together. no, those superficial milestone-markers that other couples like to boast, they don't do much for him. never have. instead, he finds happiness on a simple saturday morning in spring, when the air is still a little brisk but it’s teasing the approaching summer’s warmth. and most importantly, he’s on his way to see you.
he’s got the biggest grin on his face as he’s walking up to your door. most nights you two spend together. whether he’s at your place or you’re at his place (i think he has a preference for spending the night at your place though. your home smells like you; lavender and vanilla. and he loves your cozy bedroom. he might criticize the excessive amount of pillows on your bed but he secretly loves flopping down onto them and napping). but last night you spent the night separated because you went to hang out with some friends and didn’t get back home until late, and he wanted to work on some program he’s been developing. safe to say, he missed you a lot. and it’s no secret you missed him either.
when you open the door for him, he casually strolls in.
“hi, gigi,” you hum and press a sweet kiss to his cheek, your hands full of the laundry that you’re about to throw into the washing machine. he grins sheepishly and blushes. no matter how much you kiss him, it always makes him a little flustered still. he shuts the door behind him, and then moves to the living room. he sets his backpack down, and then pulls out a little notepad in a very routine manner. you’re bumbling around the apartment, trying to tidy it up before you head out for the day.
he starts writing a list of everything you usually do on saturdays together:
1. take car to car wash 2. get groceries for the week 3. drop box off at post office that y/n has procrastinated sending for the last 3 weeks. do NOT let her say “we can just do it next week” this time.
mid writing his list, he looks over at you and raises his eyebrows. “is there anything else we have to do today? or just the usual stuff?” he hums.
you pause and put your hand on your hip as you think about it.
“hmm. i don’t think…- oh yeah! i need to go to cvs and pick up some stuff too. ran out of face cream,” you nod your head. with a double click of his pen, he jots it down.
“okay, what all do we have on the list?” you inquire, joining him by his side to look over his shoulder.
“i think i’m fine on groceries this week. can always get ‘em later if i need them. you can cross that off” you point at the second item on the list, your hands lightly resting on his shoulders.
luigi guffaws, out of disbelief. though, he doesn’t say anything at first. instead, he stands up from the couch and turns the corner to the kitchen. the distinct rattling of the fridge door opening, followed by the thudding of the cabinet doors closing and opening is your answer to the question you didn’t ask.
you see his hand poke out from the kitchen door, a graceful wave of his fingers beckons you forward. you already know the look on his face without having to see him. when you enter the modest kitchen, he has the refrigerator door propped open. a wrinkle in his forehead forms from his eyebrows being raised out of such skepticism.
“yeah, you don’t need to go to the grocery store, baby? there’s like, 5 cans of diet coke in here and some… nasty old bananas.” he frowns as his hand gestures to the mostly empty space in the fridge.
“okay, fine, lu. we’ll go grocery shopping.” you huff. it’s an argument you’ve had one too many times already. one that you have never won, too. and well, you might not know everything, but you certainly know it’s no use arguing with an engineer. at least not about this.
“i’m driving” luigi deadpans while you two make your way out of your apartment. it’s no surprise, considering the fact that the man has been in the car with you one too many times where you’ve nearly totaled your car. there was the time you were driving into town, and a little puppy on the sidewalk caught your attention and you veered into another lane. that caused a slew of cars honk at you… oh, and there was the other time when you backed into a pole while parallel parking, which luckily only left a small scratch- but gave luigi a heart attack all the same.
yeah, so long as luigi could help it, you were the designated passenger princess.
“okay, fine. can we at least go get coffee first?” you pout up at him as he opens the passenger side door of his car for you.
“well, yeah. thought that was a given,” he says as closes the door and gets in on his side.
luigi also likes driving because he likes to compute the most simple and efficient route possible. he thinks of it as an equation. and you really don’t mind him being your personal chauffeur. where all you have to worry about is what songs you want to play next on the stereo.
when you guys get to the post office after washing your car and getting coffee, luigi is the one who carries the box in for you. so all you have to do is tell the clerk the address you’re sending the package to. he does that often: carrying your things for you. when you go to bookstores, he carries around the pile of books you want to purchase on top of his own. and the same thing will probably happen later when you go to cvs; he’ll carry your little skincare products and bottles of vitamins for you too.
after you’ve finished up at the post office, luigi tugs out his little notebook. he checks off the post office, which is under the crossed out ‘1. go to car wash’.
the next stop is indeed the pharmacy. luigi is doddling along your side, his eyes wide with curiosity as he looks over the multitude of face lotions. though, that doesn’t distract him from the topic at hand. he’s been prattling on about some substack article he read discussing AI today, and also a podcast that he listened to last night while he was up coding. most of the jargon he uses flies right over your head, but he does his best to explain it to you. and even though you still struggle to understand why it’s so important, you just like hearing him talk about something he’s so passionate about. you get a little smug smile on your face, and luigi quirks up an eyebrow and goes, “what?”
all you can do in response is shake your head and look away, trying to suppress your coy grin with a small, “nothing.”
“no, seriously. what are you smiling about? i know AI doesn’t make you this happy, baby,”
“you’re right, it doesn’t. but i like hearing you talk about it. it’s cute,” you’d shrug.
and luigi— really!— no matter how long you two’ve known each other, still gets bashful sometimes when you compliment him out of the blue. he’s got that nerd in him, after all.
and after you’ve finished at the pharmacy, you make your last stop for the day: target. you convince luigi to go there instead of the boring grocery store. much to luigi’s protest too— he knows it’s an excuse to mingle through aisles of things you don’t really need. ‘going to target instead of the actual grocery store decreases our percentage of efficiency so much, y/n’ he usually groans. but for him, he knows that argument is the losing one. something he’ll never win on because you’re stubborn. and you’re cute when you’re pouting and begging him too with those big rounded out eyes of yours. plus, he thinks it’s endearing when you bumble through aisles and pick up random things and show them off to him as if its the most fascinating thing in the world. and anyways, if you two are really on a tight schedule, he’ll pull out the boyfriend move of jokingly placing his hand on the scruff of your neck while directing you towards where you’re supposed to go.
but you two have all the time in the world today, so he pushes the cart for you as you guide him down the candle aisle
“gigi, what do you think of this one?” you ask as you push the dark red jar towards his face. the overtly ‘chai latte’ candle overwhelms his senses. with a scrunch of his nose and exaggerated cough, he shakes his head.
“god no. too much. plus, i like your lavender and vanilla one more. smells more like you.”
you hum in acknowledgment as you pull back the candle to smell again. maybe, he did have a point.
“mm fine. guess you’re right.” you pout out your bottom lip before setting the candle back down on the shelf.
and then you’re finally shuffling off to the grocery aisles, luigi pushing the cart alongside you. strolling through the aisles of food, you’ve managed to pick up a few things. a box of flavored instant oatmeal, some pasta for easy dinners, and a bag of chocolate for morale sit in the cart.
luigi’s eyes glance down at the items. his jaw is tense, his cheekbone hollowed out while the weight of his tongue pushes against the inside of his cheek. he’s unamused, if his facial expression is anything to go by.
“so when are you going to pick up actual food?” his question almost cuts like a knife. it’s not that he tries to sound so brute, but sometimes he just comes across that way when he’s being so direct. it’s the italian in him.
“what are you talking about? this is plenty fine, luigi.” you roll your eyes at him.
“what am i talking about? even the comp sci geeks i know eat more regular meals than you do. you need some actual nutrients. you eat like a canary.” he tuts. he juts his chin forwards and to the side as an indication for you to step out of the way.
speechless, you do. luigi proceeds down the aisle towards the produce section. contempt with your efforts so far, he helps himself to grabbing a bushel of broccoli, a bag of baby carrots too, and a few apples, yogurts, and protein bars to boot.
you roll your eyes at him, “yeah, well now it looks like i eat like a rabbit” you point to the baby carrots and broccoli. luigi snorts at that, and then nods in agreement.
“well you do look like a bunny. so it’s kind of fitting,” he quips, but his tone is more lighthearted and soft now.
your foot stomps in protest at his joke, “do not!”
“yeah, see? you even stomp like one when you’re angry,” he laughs, his grin only growing.
with a sigh of defeat, you shake your head and give him a “fine, whatever”.
and once luigi is content with the amount of groceries in the cart, he finally directs you two to the checkout. he pulls out his own card to pay for them, because he has that kind of sense and need to take care of you. plus, it only seems fair because he almost always comes over and snacks on whatever is in your fridge himself.
when you two finally get home after the few hours spent out and about, it’s a relief. he puts your things away for you in the fridge and pantry. he has a very specific categorization of how he does it- each corner of the fridge has it’s own category. he makes a simple dinner for you two afterwards (probably some pasta with roasted veggies).
the rest of the evening is spent on your couch while he works on his code and you read a book. your feet draped over his lap. for your own amusement, you knock your feet against his hands just to pester him. he always quips back with a “stop that.” oh, and every once in awhile you take a pause and sit up to leer over his shoulder and look at whatever he’s working on. he probably tries to teach you a little bit of code too, which usually goes south pretty quickly and both of you end up bursting into giggles <3333

Usually I try to better clean up and color these... But I REALLY wanted to share 'em as soon as possible cuz I really like how they look already, sue me :')))
Some story time under the cut for those of you who want context >:000
((EDIT - Small TWs for some negative talk and mentions of grief. Also spoilers for the ending on Chapter 4 :00)
As mentioned in a previous post, Gabby and Doey's relationship is... Very strained after the events of the fourth chapter.
Doey joined the group (Gabby, Kissy and Ava) eventually while they were venturing as subtly as possible to avoid running into Huggy. It was a surprise, obviously - they all thought he was six feet underground since the aftermath of him crashing down. They were all relieved to know he was still alive, but something was different. He wasn't as jovial as his usual self was... He was just... Off. Quiet. Monotone.
(Which is understandable since the guy is literally GRIEVING the loss of the kids of the Safe Haven y'know- and he feels immense guilt for what happened)
At some point, they get separated - Kissy and Ava stick together, while Doey and Gabby venture on their own way, both groups hoping to join each other again eventually. Doey and Gabby still have that quiet dynamic going on, because the human guy doesn't want to make things any worse than they already are. So he tries to be the cheerful one. For both his and Doey's sakes. He tries as hard as he can. But it falls flat. And Gabby, despite himself, grows more and more irritated by Doey's unusual calmness. Something's obviously going on and he won't say anything about it.
Something happens that puts them in a dangerous situation, and everything spills out. Gabby wants to talk, he wants answers. Doey is trying to ignore it, but he's being pushed. And suddenly his anger blooms back out. And he lashes out on Gabby. Shouts all the words he hadn't gotten out. How he was never any good for the kids. How he could've done so much more. How if it wasn't for him, "they'd still be breathing and standing right now". How Gabby can't understand. And Gabby... Takes it. He stands there, listening to every single thing he says. Silently.
He's not afraid. And Doey notices. It's unnerving. It catches him completely off guard. It's like something is starting to break inside of him. Something he's not sure he wants to let shatter much more...
And then Gabby hugs him. And the thing in Doey's core is completely obliterated. And the crocodile tears are finally, finally let loose. And his shoulders finally relax to wrap themselves around the short man.
They talk after some VERY good comforting words from Gabby. They find Kissy and Ava after some searching, and they're back on track.
And from then on, their relationship changes back slowly to the small friendship they had formed in the past, plus more. They both understand and trust each other, and Doey feels relief from having someone he can confide in and let himself relax with. And just... Be a kid. Even if just for a bit. All three kids need that so badly, and Gabby tries his best to give that to them. To Doey. Because he, out of anyone, deserves a break the most.
#... oof. i uh. might come in and change some of all that because this is all one-shot and lots of it probably don't make any sense#I TRIED#I promise I can write sometimes. today just isn't the day I think whoops#ANYWAY- AU LOREEEE#Because I need Doey to be happy again damnit :((((#Immediate serotonin#+ gave a hug to the guy because GOODNESS GRACIOUS DOES HE NEED A THOUSAND#my art#doodle#writing#poppy playtime#poppy playtime chapter 4#poppy playtime spoilers#doey#doey the doughman#self insert#ppt#Big Bro & Kids Shenanigans AU#PS. also keep in mind I'm French so uh... if some stuff don't make sense that might also explain why lmao

So when I stay up too late I hear what sounds like a high pitched screeching whistle sound. And I’m up right now (it’s like 4:30am when im writing this, I plan on drafting it and posting it- at some fucking point idfk) and I just heard it, followed by what sounded like a giggle?
And I’m rewatching YJ rn, and I thought of Robin (Tim or Dick, pick you poison), and the way they just disappear with the sound of a giggle. It makes me wonder if that like in the comics, if they do that too, they’d definitely add like some kinda demonic creature sounds behind it too.
Right?
I mean were talking about:
Richard (Dick) ‘I’m as dramatic as my ass is iconic to the fandom, yet everyone ignores it’ Grayson- Wayne
Jason ‘theater kid’ Todd- Wayne
Timothy (Tim) ‘I acted like Robin and Tim were two completely separate people at all times- even to the point I dated a girl as Robin, then was also dating a girl as Tim at the same time’ Drake- Wayne
Stephanie (Steph) ‘Fuck Bruce. Fuck my dad. Fuck authority. I do what I want, and while I’m at it, let’s shake it up a bit’ Brown
And of course, Damian ‘I’m the bold son. I have and can kill you in 2,000 ways without anything in a five mile radius, all directions around. Plus, you piss me off, so I will in fact stab you so you bleed out and die a painful death- OH WAIT, I’ve decided I wanna be a doctor instead. Fuck Robin’ Al Ghul-Wayne
You’re telling me they WOULDNT,??.!?.
Also let’s not forget Maps. She’s like- the blueprint. She’s totally wild.
(No one say shit about this to me, she needs her time to shine I love her so much. I’ve read so many comics illegally just to get more about her).
Also- it just sounds funny to me.
-note: I just found this in my drafts from idk how many days go. So please enjoy this….?

Wanted to make my own post as reference and explain my own reasoning over why I think this section is interpreted incorrectly by mainstream fandom, because jc stans applying it as a blanket statement for all of Jiang Cheng's parenting, past and present, pisses me off. Let's go!
Above is the scene in the raws, with the green highlight as my focus. For those who cannot read Chinese, this is the scene:
Jin Ling slowly woke up after a while. Putting his hand to his neck, some pain could still be felt. He was so angry that he jumped up and unsheathed his sword at once, “How dare you hit me! My uncle hadn’t even hit me before!” Wei WuXian exclaimed, “Really? Doesn’t he say that he’ll break your legs all the time?” Jin Ling fumed, “He’s only saying that! You damn cut- sleeve, what on Earth do you want? I...” Wei WuXian covered his face and shouted toward behind Jin Ling, “Ah! HanGuang-Jun!”
—Chapt. 24: Malice, exr
Now, this may come as a shocker since exr is my least favorite translation, but I am actually going to be defending how they translated the “你竟敢打我,我舅 舅都没打过我!” line as the most accurate translation compared to the other translations:
“You actually hit me! Not even my uncle has hit me before!”
—Vol. 1, Chapt. 6: The Malevolent, 7seas
“How dare you hit me! Even my uncle has never hit me before!”
—Chapt. 24: Malevolent Pt. 2: Escape, taming wangxian
“How dare you hit me! Even my uncle’s never hit me!”
—Chapt. 24, fanyiyi
The tricky part about translating this particular section is that the "过" is being used how "have/has/had" is used in English, and both have two separate, unique uses that depend on context to parse. Here are two examples:
Example 1:
A parent comes downstairs to find their child at home before school has let out. Parent: Have you been to school, today? Child: I haven't.
Example 2:
Two friends are contemplating which city to go to for a vacation, basing their criteria on which places no one has been to. Friend A: Have you been to Paris before? Friend B: I haven't.
Both examples use "have" (or "haven't," cause contractions), but it is clear through context that example 1 is applying "have" solely to that current situation—the child is not saying that they have never been to school in their life, just that they have not been to school on that day—while example 2's "have" extends into the full past of Friend B—the friend is saying that they have never been to Paris at any point in their life. The only reason why the distinct usage of the same phrasing isn't easily confused to English speakers is because of the context in which the phrase is being deployed (and even then, there are moments of miscommunication over lack of clear context, even when speaking face-to-face). And the character "过" is used in the exact same way in Chinese, which is why some of these translations say "hadn't/hasn't before" and others say "never before." But as I've hopefully successfully pointed out, just like "haven't" isn't always synonymous with "never," neither is "过". So which one is Jin Ling using in the excerpt? Let's look at the context:
Right before the above excerpt, Jin Ling has just saved Wei Wuxian's life from Jiang Cheng. After the escape, Wei Wuxian apologizes to Jin Ling about his words at Dafan Mountain. Jin Ling, uncomfortable at the first genuine apology he's received in his life, awkwardly brushes off the apology and is knocked out by Wei Wuxian after being distracted. He wakes up, obviously angered at the mini betrayal. Cue the line.
Based on this context, I would argue that exr is actually the most accurate translation, because Jin Ling isn't applying his complaints to Jiang Cheng's treatment of him in the general past. He is comparing Wei Wuxian's actions in that moment to how Jiang Cheng responded to him in the immediate previous moment. He's essentially saying: "You (Wei Wuxian) who I just helped despite your cruel words dare to hit me, but my uncle who had ample reason to hit me because I betrayed him hadn't before (he left the previous moment)." To which Wei Wuxian replies that Jiang Cheng is constantly threatening to break Jin Ling's legs, the implication of his words being that "your uncle may not have hit you before he left, but based on his behavior, he can always choose to hit you after he comes back."
Jin Ling then says that he considers Jiang Cheng all talk, but the next time we see him, we find that he has run back to Koi Tower because he is afraid to meet Jiang Cheng again without a safety buffer (Jin Guangyao). Even if we were to ignore Jiang Cheng canonically repeatedly physically assaulting Jin Ling in the latter half of the main text as well as verbally abusing the child from their first appearance together and fantasizing about assaulting him, Jin Ling's choice to seek protection with his paternal uncle should be enough to show that even though Jin Ling talks shit about Jiang Cheng's "disciplining" behind the man's back, he certainly takes it seriously in front of the man's face. Therefore, translating this scene as Jin Ling saying he has "never been hit before" by Jiang Cheng isn't accurate, as it overextends the "过" passed the situation that is being discussed: Wei Wuxian having unexpectedly hit Jin Ling at a moment where Jiang Cheng had unexpectantly not done the same, a reversal of their behaviors in Jin Ling's mind.
I don’t mind being challenged on this as 1) I am new to the language, 2) Chinese is not a language that can be translated 1:1 into English so there’s lots of room for translation choices that may not entirely be wrong (even my examples aren’t 1:1 on how "过" would be directly translated because there is no direct translation that wouldn’t sound clunky or weird in English), and 3) I love talking through translation logics. Just, if you wanna discuss or disagree, remember to keep it cute and keep it respectful 😊
#mdzs#human compares translations#can y'all believe i couldn't read this in november? wild#now mind you i will never do my own complete translation#because the way my brain works when i'm reading another language#is that i understand what i'm reading *as* that language#and being able to understand one language as *another* language is itself a skill#also my chinese may now be good enough to read this scene#but i do not know pinyin or cultural stuff well enough#so that's not happening

so this post was on my dash last night and i woke up still thinking about it. bc i really do feel like we get a lot of internalized homophobia!Wilson, due to the very comphet of it all, but i think there's some really interesting angles you can play with from this perspective, too. & of course end up with some major angst lol.
so. i kind of ended up going on a long ass ramble here. i've stuck it under a readmore for those who're just scrolling. thanks for putting up with me lol
the main thing i'm thinking about is like...the huge, Stacy-left-me-shaped chip on his shoulder. because how many straight guys do you know who have made their breakup this massive personality trait/let it take the blame for their behavior for years afterwards? i know so many! "wife left me, i joined the NRA" type shit.
in this situation you're describing, i think the breakup is a huge part of how this plays out. because: 1. any feelings he has for men after that are just because she fucked him up so bad. and 2. yes, he's upset she left, why wouldn't he be? he certainly wasn't relieved, secretly, that she pulled the trigger, that she gave him an excuse to push her away. he certainly wasn't tired of pretending, especially given his new condition, which makes it harder to mask. that would be crazy.
so he latches on to this post-breakup, miss-her-but-resent-her pattern of behavior because it's an easy cover for whatever else he's feeling, on two separate fronts. and then she comes back. he finds out Wilson is trying to keep them apart and for a split second, he hopes it's because Wilson's jealous, and he hates that he feels that so much that he throws himself back into manic Stacy-mode again, to the point of being party to her marriage nearly breaking up. a guy who breaks up his ex's marriage is definitely straight! right??
i think a lot of the time we get House being portrayed as the one who's settled with himself because he has this air of hedonism about him, and he enjoys being the contrarian/making people uncomfortable, and doesn't appear to care what other people think. but of course, we see that's especially untrue where his father is concerned. in a world where nothing was off limits to House, we'd expect to see him weaponizing the abuse as part of the way he makes people uncomfortable, right? instead, he's so quiet about it that even Wilson doesn't know well enough to not make him go to the funeral. it's a product of a time when certain things belonged behind closed doors. so there are some things that are off limits to House. joking about being gay is one thing, it gets a rise out of people, but he doesn't allow himself the real thing because 1. he's not gay and 2. it's so bound up in the complexity of the first few decades of his life. which he doesn't talk about, not even to make people squirm. most young people start to contend with their sexuality while still living at home...on base housing, where it felt like there were eyes everywhere, and with a father like John House. then, like you said, came the AIDS crisis, and how many tirades do you think John probably went off on? with his son, the doctor, on the phone with him? the voice that told him how to be a man is asking if he's really gonna treat those fags or not. what do you do?
i'll end this by saying, as a kid who grew up with base brats of several types, i've always found it really interesting + sorely underexplored that House is referred to so often just by surname. i know it's a thing among medical folk, too, but undoubtedly, when his father's buddies came around, they were calling him House. hell, i knew kids whose mothers called their fathers by surname. i've always found this interesting because if House didn't choose it, if it's something that just happened organically during med school, did it hurt at first? and if he did choose it, in this case, would it be because it felt like being a man? his father, the model he had for "real" masculinity growing up--would taking up his name in his early adulthood feel like a shortcut to a male ideal that he was so desperately struggling to align with?
thinking about internalised homophobia House. I normally headcanon him as openly bi (but maybe repressed or in denial about being in love with Wilson), but I like the idea of his suggestive gay comments being a cover because he's so far in denial and gay jokes are a way of being like "haha isn't it so ridiculous and subversive to suggest I'm gay? I'm doing this for the shock value because I'm obviously straight", in the same way straight guys think gay jokes are the funniest thing in the world
his homophobic military dad and becoming independent and coming of age in the 1980s and only hearing about gay people during the AIDS crisis left him with some fucked up ideas and attitudes about gay people (and himself. and what it means to be a man)
if Wilson ever tries to confess feelings for House (or if they fall into each other on a drunken night), House would absolutely withdraw, run away, push Wilson away because House isn't gay
House then dating a woman to prove to Wilson (and everyone. and himself) that he's normal and straight
eventually, if he and Wilson start seeing each other, House would rationalise it as "technically homosexual, but not like those other gays". maybe he'd also withdraw in public where anyone could see them, and try to suppress the emotional side of things ("this is just physical, don't be a fag about it")
meanwhile, Wilson is desperately trying to be okay with the scraps of affection he gets from House, but it's killing him. he's not doing well. after pining over House for so long (knowingly? unknowingly? you decide), he didn't think it would feel like this. but maybe this is the best he deserves
#hilson#though i didn't end up going much into that angle lol#house's brand of repression really scares me sometimes when im writing him#house md#i actually have a wip that never went anywhere where house is using his surname intentionally because he finds it funny#to have gay sex where the guys call him by his fathers name#but it needs a lot of work lmao#accursed mutterings

I was re-watching The Search For Spock for reasons and damn, I'm kind of fascinated by the brief interactions between Kirk and Sarek.
Sarek does not even consider that Spock might have mind-melded with anyone but Kirk before dying; he just assumes Kirk is carting around Spock's katra but making some baffling choices around it, and when he realizes Kirk doesn't have it, he assumes there was no mind-meld at all. (This is partly because Kirk was the last person who interacted with Spock, but even once Sarek knows Kirk wasn't there at the right time, he doesn't consider that Spock might have passed his katra to someone who was there.)
Kirk responds to the assumption that of course it was him by saying, "Sir, your son meant more to me than you can know" (I feel like Sarek does know, in fact). Kirk adds that he'd have died if it meant Spock would live, he just doesn't know wtf Sarek is talking about.
The sole explanation for why Spock didn't meld with Kirk before dying is that Kirk didn't happen to be in the same room at the time. There's this awful soft anguish to Kirk's explanation: "We were separated...he couldn't touch me..."
The mind-meld with Sarek is weird and uncomfortable (which I actually like them to be—let Vulcans be weird!). The camera continually focusing on Sarek's mouth doesn't help, though.
However, this meld doesn't seem as ... encompassing as the Kirk-Spock ones (I mean, one would hope not, but still). Sarek just summarizes Kirk's memories and repeats some specific statements of Spock's as he's rifling through Kirk's memories, rather than speaking Kirk's own thoughts as Spock did; Kirk's independent confirmations that Sarek is correctly seeing his memories come from Kirk's own mouth, not Sarek's.
Unusually, Kirk opens his eyes halfway through the meld as he gets to relive this latest trauma, and he's obviously on the verge of tears but holds back. The way the camera focuses on his eyes specifically is fantastic, actually—the lighting mingles with the hazel of his eyes in a kind of unsettling way and you just see the stunned grief in them.
At one point, Kirk just longingly/miserably murmurs "Spock..." as he's reliving their last moments together. Via Spock's father.
Presumably(????) they didn't literally mean Sarek to be Kirk's father-in-law, and yet their dynamic just feels so much like tense in-laws who previously didn't talk much or approve of each other dealing awkwardly with shared loss, and then teaming up against any threats to the welfare of the person they both love.
Once Kirk understands what the hell Sarek is even talking about, he's the one who is absolutely certain Spock would have passed on his katra when Sarek gives up hope. Sarek promptly realizes that Kirk's understanding of Spock is correct, though he didn't see it himself until Kirk points it out, and still has no idea how this would have worked out. It's Kirk, again, who comes up with the most obvious explanation.
Instead of going through the camera recordings himself, Kirk asks Sarek to please wait so they can go through them together.
One of the snippets from the recording that shows up as Kirk is rewinding to the right spot is past!Kirk screaming and being held back as Spock is dying. Sarek isn't even judgmental about it. (ngl I ... suspect the Sarek-Kirk relationship is going to be a lot better once things settle down later.)
Kirk acknowledges that carrying this out will be difficult and Sarek says, "you will find a way." Kirk just responds, "I will. I swear."
Then towards the end of the film, as the Klingon ship approaches Vulcan, Sarek responds to the announcement of their arrival with "Tell them ... tell Kirk we'll be ready." Again, Sarek seems to believe that Spock's relationship to Kirk specifically is exceptional and unlike his other friendships. Sarek is the one who tells post-ritual Spock about his closeness to Kirk in particular and that Kirk went back for him. (This is also reinforced by Spock recognizing Kirk's face alone, and recalling his name specifically.)
By the time the ritual is over, Sarek knows that Kirk's own son died in the process of recovering Spock. When Kirk says he did what he had to do, Sarek asks, "But at what cost?" Kirk just says he'd have lost his soul if he hadn't tried and Sarek accepts this.
#honestly i feel like kirk is the only person spock knows who is remotely bizarre enough to fit in his family. i just imagine it's like#sarek and amanda puzzled at spock choosing a stable normal human man as a life partner until they really get to know kirk far later#and then they're like 'ah. neither stable nor normal. now we see'#anghraine babbles#long post#the search for spock#star peace#james t kirk#sarek#c: who do i have to be#otp: the premise#anghraine's meta

I've been thinking about the fandom's attitude toward trauma, and I find it deeply problematic. I'm going to ramble a bit about it.
Here's the thing, either people completely dismiss the element of trauma in the story, or they turn it into a free-pass that can excuse any future shitty behavior from the character.
Specifically, when it comes to Wei Wuxian, I see that his childhood trauma from losing his parents and being left to beg on the streets, and from being made a scapegoat by Yu Ziyuan - who was extremely abusive towards him, both physically and emotionally - to the war, the trauma of being thrown into the burial mounds, and everything that happened from the moment he created the ghost path of cultivation until the first siege of the burial mounds and his death, can all be minimized or all together dismissed by certain parts of the fandom when analyzing his actions in the first life. That's part of why I hate takes that portray Wei Wuxian as oblivious to Lan Wangji's feelings or too emotionally unintelligent to understand the romance, when, actually, there was a ton of shit going on in his life and he absolutely had no energy left to think about romance, of all things. The trauma also becomes progressively more relevant when we look at Wei Wuxian's actions towards the end of his first life - because traumatic experiences kept piling up - and when we get to the battle of Nightless City and later the first siege of the Burial Mounds, it's basically impossible to separate Wei Wuxian's actions and reactions from the trauma he'd endured up until that point.
On the other hand, the certain parts of the fandom really emphasize Jiang Cheng's trauma way beyond the point where it would be relevant to do so.
Yes, Jiang Cheng had an awful childhood because his mother was abusive towards everyone around her. And I can excuse his poor temper when he was a child based on that.
And it's true that losing his parents and sect was traumatic. However, the problem is that in Jiang Cheng's case, his trauma has frequently been used to justify and, in fact, to excuse, all the atrocities he went on to commit in his adult life.
Wei Wuxian, despite his trauma, never became the abuser. In every instance where he used violence, it was either during the war, or he was provoked first. He never took the initiative to be violent or to hurt others otherwise.
Jiang Cheng was completely different. He lashed out because of jealousy and a desire to satisfy his own ego, he betrayed Wei Wuxian and the Wen Siblings, knowing that he owed them his life. And yet, his stans will insist that his past trauma is enough to excuse this behavior. I'm not going to go into how Jiang Cheng's actions were entirely voluntary in this post. Suffice to say that the book makes it quite clear that he turned against Wei Wuxian not because Wei Wuxian's prominence hurt his ego, and the other sect leaders exploited that. But the Jiang sect wouldn't have been in danger had Jiang Cheng chosen not to turn against Wei Wuxian.
I suppose my point is that at some point, trauma can no longer excuse bad behavior. And in this case, when a sane adult chooses to commit genocide, that choice cannot be excused by anything, not even by a traumatic past. When his stans say that he was a victim, they forget about his victims. Sometimes, a victim goes on to become the perpetrator.
In the novel, several characters have extremely traumatic pasts. Wei Wuxian, Jiang Cheng, Jin Guangyao. Most characters, really.
MXTX draws very clear parallels between Wei Wuxian and several of those characters. Wei Wuxian and Jin Guangyao both have a lower background in a world that bases a person's value on their birth. Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian both lived with Yu Ziyuan for several years, they both watched Lotus Pier fall, they both lost Jiang Yanli. Wei Wuxian and Xue Yang both came from a lower social background, they were both street kids at one point, they were both victims of societal injustice.
And yet, Wei Wuxian chose to break the cycle of abuse. No matter how much abuse he endured, how traumatic his past, he didn't go on to become the next monster, the next abuser. On the contrary, he actively chose to be kind and just and nurturing. He was only ever violent when he was forced to be so - when he had to defend himself or others. Even in Nightless City, after he'd just lost Wen Ning and Wen Qing, he wasn't the first to attack.
On the other hand, Jiang Cheng, Jin Guangyao, Xue Yang, and many others chose to continue the cycle of violence and abuse. And at some point, the trauma in their pasts can no longer excuse their later choices. Those three characters, for instance - I know there are others but I'm not going to list every single MDZS character with a traumatic past who went on to become shitty people themselves, otherwise I'd be here all day - ruined many lives themselves, often those of people who were completely unrelated to their own traumatic pasts.
And if their actions are excused because of trauma, then what about their victims? What about the Wen remnants, who were old, disabled people, and a toddler, all innocent of Wen Rouhan's crimes? What about the people Jiang Cheng captured and murdered under the suspicion of the being demonic cultivators, on the off chance of them being Wei Wuxian? And the book doesn't even confirm that those people were actually demonic cultivators, they were taken because they were suspected of being such. And nowhere in the book does it say that any of those people did anything wrong at all. And what about Qin Su and her child? What about the entire clan Jin Guangyao framed for murdering his son and exterminated under such an excuse? What about the people of Yi city? What about Xiao Xingchen, Song Lan and a-Qing? What about the nameless, innocent victims who didn't get justice?
A traumatic past can never excuse the trail of victims they left behind.

I saw that you added Agent Stone to your AU and I wanted to ask about it—the EVay AU itself. I noticed that some parts of Sonic Boom are in it as well as parts from the games, and, correct me if I’m wrong, but I think at some point you said that the Boom!Baby comic isn’t canon in the official universe? I got a little confused about what was canon for your AU and what wasn’t, so I wanted to ask if you could maybe provide a little guide on the EVay AU lore if it’s not too much trouble?
One thing you have to keep in mind is that I've been posting illustrations of my "AU" for over 11 years (and if you count just me creating "Aurora" herself, we're talking closer to 25 years) so there's going to be discrepancies from when I first started posting.
Back then, I didn't understand how AUs worked and so I thought I had to separate the game universe and the boom universe, so on my older posts you might see me say something like that. But having been doing this for awhile now, I realized that when it comes to fan-stuff it's really just whatever you want. There are no rules, you can mash things up and you can change things as you see fit.
I made a guide to my AU and I update it as things about my stories get added and changed. I also have a link to it saved in my pinned post. It's safe to say that if it's in the guide, it's canon to my AU.
I am sorry for any confusion I give any of you guys. I'm not one of the official writers/artists, I'm just a fan of Sonic like all of you are, so though I try to make my stories clear and consistent, I didn't hold myself up to the same standards as the official writers to keep my lore rigid and unchanging. I never expected my content to blow up the way it did, so it never occurred to me that I should have everything about my AU figured out before I started posting about it.
But again I think that's the beauty of fan content: it's not permanent, so it can be an ever-evolving thing without needing a 'reboot' like in official media.

A Look At The "Nothing Character" Who Broke Our Hearts: Isha
**Spoilers For Arcane**
I must say, there was a time not so long ago that if someone were to tell me there was a whole tag devoted to the hatred of a cute, tenacious, brave little girl character who died tragically trying to emulate her hero, I would have found the idea completely insane. However, since becoming a part of our little community....
Before we get into this a bit let me say, I am not formally educated in writing/literature/creative story telling or any of that. So what I discuss and list will as usual be the research I could find on my own with sources provided. I know for a fact through some of my interactions on here there are some very educated people in this area, so if any of you see this and care enough, please chime in! I'd love to learn more.
What Is The Complaint?:
"Isha isn't a real character!"
"Isha did nothing except get blown up!"
"Why was this kid even in the show?"
"Isha's only purpose was to give Jinx a reason to be happy then take it away!"
You get the idea. Overall people seem to hate the character because they feel she really wasn't one. They see her as being more of a singular plot device with no real information or depth given and not having any real purpose. While it is true we don't learn a ton about her, I completely disagree as to the worth and impact of her character on the story. In doing some digging, I came across the following term:
Catalyst Character-
Per Reference.com: "A catalyst character, also known as a catalytic character, is the character in a story who causes the protagonist, or main character, to move toward some kind of action or transformation. This character is usually the person that spends the most quality and influential time with the protagonist."
Okay, rather or not you agree or think it matters I'd hope at the least that that explanation is fairly clear. So moving forward, why do I think this applied to Isha? Because she is in all aspects a MASSIVE agent of change in the narrative. I understand not liking her. That is totally individual. But to imply she didn't matter is complete and utter nonsense.
The Ventilation Chamber Battle:
The brawl between Vi and Jinx has come to a head. Vi sits atop Jinx with one gauntlet around Jinx's throat and the other poised to kill her. Jinx is telling her to do it... she's glad that Vi is the one who is going to end her. When out of nowhere Isha leaps between them pointing a gun at Vi. '
Concrete Impact:
Stops the fight cold
Jinx immediately screams no betraying her actual fear for Vi's safety
Snaps Vi out of the fight where it appears she was quite possibly pulling back her hand to finish the fight
Isha's presence is what makes Vi get in front of Caitlyn's rifle leading to their separation and what occurs for them afterward.
Jinx clearly is "seeing" Vi again for the first time when Vi leaps to stop Caitlyn
2. Life With Jinx:
We return to Jinx after the time skip. It turns she has been living quietly in hiding with Isha since the battle. She is staying out of the bloodshed, focusing on her relationship caring for the young girl. She seems more at peace than we have seen her the entire series, even declaring "Jinx is dead" when Sevika comes to demand she get involved.
Concrete Impact:
It's strange to say for something I list under concrete but just the obvious and clear effect she has on Jinx herself. We see it expressed in many ways, such as Jinx saying Isha reminds her of Powder, Jinx saying she doesn't want to screw up what she has with Isha when in Silco's office, and so on. I feel like we could do an entire analysis post on Isha's effect on Jinx mental/emotional state but that is for another time.
The fact that Isha is masquerading as Jinx during the occupation is HUGE. We have to remember, Jinx is not actually getting involved at all before the events of the rally. The people of Zaun have made her their symbol because of what she did, and because Piltover has made Jinx their symbol of why they are doing what they are doing.
It is only because Isha went to the rally and got arrested that Jinx rejoins the fight.
3. Jinx Comes To Stillwater:
Isha has been arrested along with a large group of Zaunites during the rally. Sevika limps back to the hideout and tells Jinx who is immediately extremely upset. We see her seriously glitching in full for the first time since the time skip. She and Sevika mount a rescue mission, and because of Isha. Jinx rejoins the game since the occupation began.
Concrete Impact:
Without Isha being taken Jinx doesn't get involved which quite literally changes the trajectory of the entire story. Meeting Vander again and everything that stems from that would be impacted which quite literally could effect every character in the story. It is too much to list or "what if".
4. Reuniting The Family:
In the wake of meeting Vander and rescuing Isha, Jinx goes and finds Vi in the fighting pits, telling her what she has found and together with Isha they set off on a journey to find him. Leading to the all-too-short reunification of their family, with their newest member of course.
Concrete Impact:
Of course to state the obvious, they wouldn't be here if it were not for any of the things we have already been over.
When Jinx and Vi start to fighting, once again it is Isha's involvement that stops it cold.
Seeing Jinx's care for Isha is what helps Vi start to see her sister in a new light.
It is Isha's bleeding from getting whacked that draws Vander to them. Vi immediately leaps to save her life and Jinx can see the Vi she knows is still there as well. Also being thrown into Vander's path like that leads to his regaining control and the scene we see above.
5. The Commune:
After their family is reunited Vi, Jinx and Isha take Vander to the commune to meet with Viktor. Hoping his healing gifts can save their father. Of course, it all ends in soul rending tragedy with Vander losing control and Isha sacrificing herself to save her new family during a Noxian attack.
Concrete Impact:
Isha brings Jinx's gun. Without the gun the plan to save Vander could have gone a hundred different ways.
Isha pocketed those stones. If she hadn't done so once again it is impossible to list all the ways that incident could have changed in the end.
The impact on the story from Isha's sacrifice is so far beyond "making Jinx sad" it is mind-boggling. It stops the attack in its tracks. Without Vi getting injured saving Jinx from the explosion, Caitlyn and Jinx may have never found even that microscopic bit of common ground between them we see. There is so much more and that is to say nothing of the impact on Jinx mentally/emotionally
Conclusion:
So again this is not a true deep dive or anything. And I do understand the complaint that we really don't ever learn a ton about her. But I absolutely do not understand or agree with the complaint that she is meaningless/unimportant/inconsequential to the story. Her actions and presence drive a massive amount of change in the course of season two, and without her it very likely could have all ended quite differently. To close, below is an English translation of Isha's farewell posted to reddit for you to enjoy. (I have no way of knowing if it is accurate so if not forgive me).
Child, don’t fear the thorns; walk barefoot, And you’ll find something precious. Look at this darkened sky; see how beautiful the fireworks are. There’s no need for so much sorrow. People flourish and wither, But even stubborn rocks and debris will bloom.
Part the mountains, Let her see me. Tell the stars, Hurry and shine on me. Blow away the dark clouds, With a stroke of blue. Even if the world is full of desolation, We can look up and see the moon.
While we still have the hearts of children, Even as lone blossoms among millions, we must bloom. Don’t be troubled or sad. Don’t forget: Even if tears fall, we must keep running, Run to where even time can’t find us. Be the birds that soar at the edge of the sky.

Don’t keep searching; Just give me a hug. Let’s quietly forget, For this is good enough for me.

I was recently alerted to this post, and it surprised me so much that I am logging back into my tumblr after years of inactivity to make a response.
If you are interested in mori fashion, please DO NOT use this post a reference on mori or its origins. I'll address the issues here point by point.
Mori DOES NOT come from Lolita. Such a claim is incredibly incorrect. Mori was created independently by a group of people who wore a similar style and wanted to put a name to it. They had a mixi group (like facebook in Japan) and one person in the group, Choco, named the style. (One could say that mori was influenced by Lolita, in the same way many modern j-fashions are somewhat influenced by Lolita, but it was absolutely not created from it.)
Mori Lolita does exist, but was created internationally and was not a term used in Japan at all. Instead, a term called Natural Lolita was used. So again, this is blatantly wrong.
Mori gyaru does also exist, but was a spinoff FROM mori fashion directly. The term is complex, and the style had many, many names. And it never actually took off in Japan, although it was mentioned in a few magazines. It was a short-lived microstyle based on mori's popularity, and gyaru's popularity, at the time. Mori DID NOT come from mori gyaru.
Additionally, gyaru is it's own style with separate roots from Lolita. To say the two are connected in the way this article implies is also wrong.
The subtypes mentioned here are not accurate at all. Although people have independently categorized their outfits as "white," "dark," "classic," and so on, these are not official terms. And they have never been used in Japan. I believe this author may be super-imposing Lolita terms onto mori? Or some other j-fashion's terms? I've been in the mori community for over 10 years now, and I have never heard those terms either in international or Japanese communities. Either way, mori is mori. You can wear whatever version you like and call it whatever you want for fun, but there are no "official" substyles.
If someone were to categorize mori "substyles" however, the most common related terms internationally are Yama Kei, Hama Kei, and Dark Mori. (Each of these has its own unique history I won't get into here.) None of these are mentioned.
Additionally, Mori Kei is a term that is mainly internationally. Mori in Japan is almost always referred to as 森ガール. By the time it took off internationally and more inclusive terms were being used, mori was basically dead in Japan. This is why if you search for 森ケイ・森系 in Japanese you will basically only find articles and information from recent years, as this was not a term originally widespread in the actual community.
The one thing this article does do correctly is it's description of mori, alongside the images. Those are accurate to the fashion. However, that description is incredibly brief.
If you are looking for some more accurate information on the history of Mori, here are a few places you can look.
For a straight from the source account in Japanese, check out Choco's Book! She describes where mori came from and about the mixi group as well.
I made a detailed post a while back on my blog that also goes over mori's history.
You can also check out the Mori Wiki for more information on mori's history in Japan and abroad.
I have no hate for this creator, so please do not go and harass them. I'm sure they're just someone trying to enjoy j-fashion. But I post this because it is so easy to spread mis-information. And I want as many people to know of and enjoy mori as possible.
『「森系」というのは?』 What is 'Mori-kei'?

It’s been a long time since I’ve written a style introduction post, but I thought now would be the perfect time to write one as I’m really getting into a new style this season. This time I’ll be taking you out of the high fashion world and deep down into the woods.

AND ANOTHER THING
i do not support the use of AI in creative pursuits (or in much of anything, personally), but i also recognize that there is a desperate undercurrent that exists for people who may feel so inclined to use it or support it to be part of the community, to participate in the community through any means necessary. ofc there are those who feel this is not true for them nor do they believe that their use of AI has nothing to do with community participation, acknowledgment, or integration at all. instead, doing so is simply that they just want to bypass the emotional commitment, labor, and the otherwise community-based cost of entry into fandom and get what they're looking for: content that indulges them and personalizes to their own specifications without the cost of work involved. but the reality is that if they didn't want some level of engagement or some acknowledgment, recognition, and integration, then i'd argue that they would never have posted it in any public space where other people will see it. certainly not tag it for everyone to see. if you decide to use AI for your own personal use and keep it to yourself then that's one thing. but the minute you step foot into the public sandbox where everyone is, then that's a whole matter altogether, i think.
the larger point that i'm trying to not make here is that we have been socially conditioned to avoid friction, to completely separate ourselves from conflict, to bypass hardship and go straight to convenience, access, and instant gratification. and if you do that, you get rewarded. but the cold hard truth is that you just can't really shortcut your way through art like that not without any real blowback from the people you're trying to share it with. you just honestly don't order catering for a potluck. it defeats the purpose.
ongoing random topics of interests that i would love to write an essay about but probably won't touch for a long while, if ever, because of various reasons i won't disclose here but
far be it for me to support queerbait in any form without, idk, being a class traitor, but old school queerbait, terrible as it was, was also weirdly inclusive so that they get the queerbaiting right lmao
parasocial relationships with famous people (any famous person, they don't even have to be anyone of real skill or note) have rotted brains and critical thinking and, most notably, critical analysis of fictional characters. interchanging the interaction with one for the other is what i imagine is the reason why people push for fictional characters' independence and autonomy because real people's independence and autonomy are threatened all the time within parasocial relationships so this concept of vigilant protection of these people are being conflated with the needless protection of fictional characters
media literacy is not necessarily dead despite my grumbling, but i also know that being literate and fluent in media and communications at this point also relies on being information literate, being digitally literate, and being values literate and that's a lot and few of those things are being supported, especially in conjunction with each other

Brakul participating in the khaitwrestling tournament in the city of Wardin’s annual games. He is grappling with his beloathed rival, a Titen youth with a cooler beard named Gijo Sihgawe.
Brakul is using a technique where he attempts to gain a solid hold of his opponent's body and will then spur his khait into a run, using the animal’s momentum to drag the opponent off his mount. This can be a risky endeavor (as one attempting this maneuver might be wrenched off their OWN khait if their foe has a stronger grip) but is considered rather impressive and crowd pleasing when performed successfully.
Khait wrestling is a sport that was brought to broader Imperial Wardi culture via the Hill Tribes, and is very popular in the west and south of the region. The Wardi brand of khait wrestling is similar in basic form and structure to its progenitor traditions, but has developed into its own unique variant. The goal of the sport is to force the other rider to dismount (via pulling or shoving them off) and to lead both khait out of the ring.
Wardi khait wrestling is performed in a wide, circular ring. Combatants begin with their khait standing parallel, and attempt to shove or pull opponents off of their mount. Fighting halts if the riders step out of the ring, and both must reposition themselves at the center before the match can resume.
Combatants are only permitted to fight via grappling. Punches, kicks, intentional twisting of extremities, attacks with the spur, jabs at the eyes, intentional trampling, etc are prohibited (and called by referees. Their calls can be incredibly controversial). Notably, the pulling of hair is generally Not outright prohibited, so longhaired riders usually wear their hair tight to the scalp or under a cap, and many devoted wrestlers keep their heads shaved.
A match ends when one combatant has forced their opponent to the ground AND successfully leads their khait out of the ring while remaining mounted. If a dismounted rider manages to regain control of their khait before it is led away, the match continues. Bouts between equally matched opponents can be very lengthy. Official competitions held in annual games tend to have time limits, at which point the match is scored by referees based on a point system (usually tallying number of falls and scoring points per certain types of grapples).
Khait wrestling requires strong, calm, well trained and exceptionally even-tempered khait that can remain unpanicked as their riders fight atop them. Most are mares or geldings, though occasional intact bulls with particularly gentle temperaments make appearances. Hornless or blunt-horned khait are preferred (some local games only accept hornless) as even the most placid khait's horns can become dangerous to their wrestling riders. A khait that intentionally injures another rider or khait (through biting or kicking) will be banned from official events, and often become fodder for sacrifice (khait are rare as animal sacrifices, and also considered among the best for the same reason- their high value).
Saddles are made especially for this sport, and are designed specifically to Not provide significant security to the rider (they are flat and lack stirrups), making riders entirely reliant on strength and balance. Riders wear loose trousers (quite uncommon in the region, where robes or skirts are generally worn), belted at the waist to avoid being yanked off during a bout. They wear high laced riding boots with small spurs.
This and other mounted events are usually accessible only to wealthy athletes (or athletes with wealthy sponsors), as there is a significant cost barrier to khait ownership to begin with in the cities, and animals suitable for this sport are particularly expensive. These matches are functionally a showcase of wealth and power for their participants. Though riders must wear simple clothing and are provided basic saddles, their mounts may be lavishly groomed and ornamented. The costuming shown here is actually on the less ostentatious end of the spectrum for a typical city tournament.
Additional notes:
Brakul's khait here is one of his favorites (he has twelve), a huge, shaggy mare named Emense, a Wardi word that translates close to 'beloved'.
Brakul has participated in nine of Wardin's annual games, and placed first in khait wrestling three times. He enjoys modest local fame for this and has used most of his winnings to buy more khait and khait accessories.
Goji is a relative newcomer and won first in the last two annual tournaments. This drawing depicts moments before his second win, where Brakul does, in fact, fail at his awesome maneuver and get wrenched off his khait.
Goji rides an intact bull, a relative rarity. He is an exceptionally placid and gentle creature, named 'Moose' after a strange and exotic beast from the north.
Khait wrestling among the Hill Tribes has dozens of local variants, but commonalities that distinguish these from the adopted Wardi tradition is that the goal is specifically to knock off the other rider AND mount their khait AND THEN lead both from the ring, and that it's done with actual saddles.
#Goji has lore but he doesn't show up in The White Calf he just gets background mentions as a guy that Brakul (who is actually quite#unaggressive and relatively chill 90% of the time) fucking HATES so much like just foaming at the mouth pissed off that this guy exists#brakul red dog#gijo sihgawe#the white calf#I'll have to make a separate post about the annual games at some point. I was going to here but it got too long

Endiness made a beautiful long post with all his quotes on that topic that I think is very informative and worth looking at, so here’s a link to that. And with that already discussed, I thought I’d make a thread of all his changes that we are aware of, because when you look into them, you find that none of his “book accurate” changes are actually book accurate.
His decision to make Geralt grunt and cut his lines.
HC: "All the grunts, I either added or I didn't say anything and just grunted instead. It was often up to the other actors to go, 'I think he's not gonna say anything now.'"
JB: "Henry likes to cut his lines, 'cause he's lazy. No, he literally just likes to cut them. He likes to do more up here [frames his face with his hands] and just with face and hmms and grunts. There's a lot of hmms, and so I often have to take a lot of his lines and turn it into a lot of my stuff so that the plot happens."
So, as everyone who has read the books knows that Geralt is and always has been a yapper. Gerakt often talks or thinks in monologues, and definitely not in short grunts.
Of course when the audience started making fun of Geralt for not being able to speak in full sentences Henry promptly went back on admitting the blame and instead said that the big bad writers were the ones who didn't give him lines, and now it was his life’s mission to fight for a book accurate Geralt who speaks.
Roach’s death scene
After S2 came out, Lauren received a lot of backlash for Roach’s death scene, with multiple sources citing that she wanted the moment to be more “comedic” before the brave Henry Cavill stepped in and refused to participate in such horrible anti source material activities.
LH: "Henry was so unhappy with the line. Finally I said, 'You know what, you come up with something. I trust you, you know this material so well, you know the book so well, you don't even have to pitch it to me.' And he came back the next day with a beautiful speech that's at the end of 'Sword of Destiny' when Geralt is facing death.”
This is the line he ended up using:
“Enjoy your last walk across the meadow and through the mist. Be not afraid of her for she is your friend."
This was Lauren’s response AND the original line.
LH: “Here's what was scripted, in homage of the fact that a previous Roach had existed, and another one will exist soon. It's hardly a joke. Henry wanted a longer, more emotional moment, which I was more than happy to give him. Don't create drama where none exists.”

So in S2 Geralt ends up quoting a part of his monologue from ‘Sword of Destiny’ when he’s at his lowest after thinking that Yennefer had died at the battle of Sodden Hill, and he has nothing left to live for. Which to me doesn't work that well with Roach at all. That line was a response to Geralt thinking he's lost the love of his life, not his horse. In my opinion, the original line Lauren penned out is more heartfelt and actually more emotional and more book accurate as well.
The absolute removal of any Triss and Geralt “romance”
This one we don’t have that much information on in comparison to others. But there were multiple reports that at the beginning of S2 Triss and Geralt were supposed to have some kind of a romantic scene with each other which then was cut during production, and it was largely speculated that it was due to Henry Cavill.
“Several months ago we reported on a sex scene happening between Geralt and Triss, sometime in the first half of Season 2. That didn’t happen, as we all saw, but here’s what we know about the original plan for that: Geralt and Triss are in a room together, they seem friendly at first. They are playing some kind of weird game. Whoever wins a round, gets to ask a question. We’re not privy to the exact flow of the conversation, but it eventually leads to both of them ending up in bed. We can only guess why this was cut, but perhaps it was thanks to Henry Cavill.”
Now, irrelevantly on your feelings on book Triss and Geralt you have to admit that that short-lived “romance” is indeed a part of the books and therefor book accurate. So the removal of it would go against Mr I’m fighting to make this show as much book accurate as possible.
The removal of the Yen and Geralt sex scene in S2
"We just wanted to be very careful that it was true and real, and it didn't turn into something that we, as actors, didn't believe it should be," Cavill stated. When Yennefer and Geralt unite, they embrace, but it doesn't go further than that. He continued: "We wanted it to be emotional rather than sexual. It was really, really important, and we had to lean away from what was originally on the page." Initially, Geralt and Yennefer were written to have a more passionate night. Henry Cavill and Anya Chalotra went to "The Witcher" producers and explained why they thought a steamy evening was not the way to go. "These are people who believe one thing about the fate of another and then find out something else is true," Cavill said about Geralt believing Yennefer was dead. "That's not how they behave," the actor added. "How they behave is they just want to be with the person and emotionally recognize their existence again in that shared space.”
This one is a bit tricky because I am willing to get behind an actor who doesn't want to do a sex scene out of comfort reasons or whatnot, but Henry saying that "That's not how [Yennefer and Geralt] behave”, is quite absurd in my opinion. Because that is very much how Geralt and Yennefer behave, especially in the short stories and ToC. They are inherently a very sexual couple who come crashing in and out of each other’s lives while having very passionate sex. But I can understand wanting this scene to be more “emotional” (as if sex isn't emotional), so this one I am willing to give him a bit more leeway on. (But then again looking at the blinds saying that he refused any sex scenes because oh his “ideals” and was allegedly really nasty to Anya about it, well..)
Geralt being the perfect father figure to Ciri with no flaws and no struggles (which inevitably snowballed into the Yen Betrayal Arc)
This one I don’t see talked that much at all, and to me this one is his most detrimental one.
@LHissrich: “In interviews, Henry explains how he felt strongly that Geralt NOT be bumbling, nor a struggling father figure. In fact, a lot of S2 is about how Geralt does come from a loving (albeit unconventional) family. Henry was passionate about this shift, and we discussed it a lot, and ultimately thought it was wonderful for his character development. But it also had the domino effect of changing what Ciri needed from Yen when she entered the picture. Thus, introducing the idea of balance.”
So I don’t know about you, but I love when characters have flaws and naturally progress be it for good or bad, some would say that that's what story telling is about, well that someone wouldn't be Henry Cavil. Geralt being a struggling father figure at first, someone who makes mistakes and learns from them and tries is very much a prominent theme in Blood of Elves and is actually very real, people make mistakes! Especially in huge shifts such as “becoming a father overnight’ but we didn't get that because Henry refused to play it that way. What we got is Geralt who already basically knows exactly how to parent, he always knows what to say, what pep talk to give and also doesn't hold any resentment and any negative feelings towards Vesemir at all. It's all one dimensional happy family here! Which goes against not only the books but what he preached about fighting tooth and nail to make the “forgotten” male characters three-dimensional as well because the horrible feminist Lauren only thinks about female characters.
Lauren then goes on saying that “it also had the domino effect of changing what Ciri needed from Yen when she entered the picture. Thus, introducing the idea of balance” So, it is fair to speculate that Henry’s refusal to showcase Geralt having any flaws at all and act book accurate snowballed into The Controversial Yennefer Betrayal Arc.
These are the ones that I can remember off the top off my head, so there might be more, there’s probably more that we aren’t even aware of. I think putting them all together showcase a very interesting picture. One of Henry Cavill never actually understanding who Geralt fundamentally is as a character, and of him not being a team player at all. I just hope that more and more people are aware of the insane PR his team did for him when it came to this show, and that more people are able to see through it.
#anti henry cavill#the witcher#long post#i do believe that i have an interesting vintage point because ive been in this fandom since the show premiered so some people might not be#even aware of these things when ive lived them and have an archive of them in my head lmaoo#i don't like the formatting of asks when you reblog them so im making this a separate text post
