Exactly, I 100% agree. He liked the name Amy came up with and besides, he just calls Aurora "Tiny" anyway.
If they'd left it up to him to come up with a name, he would've named her something like "Smallmee (Small Amy/Me)" or something 🤣
Who named Aurora? Sonic or Amy?
The name was Amy's idea :)

Rhythm and Blue - Sonamy Oneshot
Rated T - Alcohol use, mild language, suggestive language
Summary: Things were different on the dance floor. Out there among the pulsing beat and driving rhythm, certain barriers no longer existed. Hands could roam places that were otherwise off-limits. Touches could linger. Pounding hearts and flush cheeks could be blamed on the cardio without addressing the flames of desire that flickered just below the surface. It was a way to hold that special someone close without needing explanation. And Amy and Sonic would soon discover they'd become addicted to it. [A/N: I'm always drawing these two dancing, I figured I might as well write about it too! This story is also available to read on AO3]
Amy nodded her head to the driving beats that boomed throughout the nightclub. A tightly packed bar full of rowdy patrons and deafening speakers was not her preferred scene, but when her friends suggested a group night out, the bubbly hedgehog couldn't resist.
Of course, it would have been great if most of their friends had actually shown up.
Rouge regretfully declined, stating she was away on some top-secret mission. Knuckles immediately responded to the group chat with a firm: 'no. and take me off this stupid chat.' Big had originally agreed but, thanks to his ever-evasive amphibious friend, was now too busy looking for Froggy to attend. Apart from Amy, the only people who showed up tonight were Tangle, Whisper, Jewel and Vector.
It had taken a substantial amount of pleading from Tangle to get the wolf to come to the nightclub, and even then she only agreed under the condition that she could station herself in a corner booth to keep an eye on everyone from a quiet distance. Upon arriving, Tangle had spotted a mechanical bull in the club and immediately raced to give it a shot. Jewel had quickly trailed on her heels to make sure the lemur didn't injure herself. Amy had watched for a bit, but had quickly grown impatient. She didn't come out for mechanical-bull-riding, she came here to dance! She could likely convince Vector to dance with her, but the music-enthusiast was too busy admiring the sound system and had even talked the DJ into letting him run the booth for a couple of songs. Amy toyed with the idea of sitting with Whisper to keep her company, but the booth was so far away from the dance floor... Ultimately, the pink hedgehog resigned herself to leaning against the wall with her arms crossed.
Nightclubs were for dancing. And here she was. She should change her name to 'Amy Wallflower'.
Sure, she could dance by herself, she supposed, but that would be awkward... And sure, Amy was quite the social butterfly and could probably make plenty of new friends here that she could dance with... But she felt extra vulnerable being in an unfamiliar place and wearing an uncharacteristically petite outfit: A form-fitting, two-piece cocktail dress with some very high heels. Amy was now regretting wearing the ensemble instead of one of her usual outfits, but had chosen this look in the slim chance that Sonic might show up…
It was probably a hopeless wish. Sonic didn't even respond in the group chat. He was so notorious for showing up late to get-togethers, if he showed up at all, that he no longer RSVP'd to events so as not to 'break' a promise. Having him make an appearance at your party was like witnessing a shooting star: Something you were damn lucky to experience, but not something to be expected.
Just as she began to scold herself for being a sourpuss so early on in the night, Amy felt a subtle, almost magnetic pull drawing her attention towards the entrance of the club. When she turned her head, she gasped.
There he was.
Sonic was standing on the outskirts of the dance floor, scanning the crowd in search of something. Amy pushed herself off the wall and took a step forward to make sure she hadn't mistaken someone else for her best friend. However, when their gazes finally met, Sonic's face lit up with his signature grin and he waved enthusiastically. Amy's tail began to wag upon seeing that unmistakable smile. Sonic politely pushed his way through the crowd to make his way towards her and when he was within reach, Amy leapt at him with a tight embrace.
"Sonic!" She cheered and squeezed him just a bit tighter when she felt a chuckle rumbling from his chest and he patted her back. The gesture reminded her that he wasn't as enthusiastic about physical affection as she was, so she released him though her tail continued wagging even as they drew apart.
Sonic couldn't help but give her a once-over and before he could stop himself he shouted, "You look stellar!"
Amy's eyes widened and she felt a warmth blooming in her cheeks and ears. She clasped her hands behind her back and bashfully drew a circle in the floor with the toe of her high heels. "Thank you," she replied, now very glad she wore this outfit after all!
Sonic tittered and rubbed his nose, embarrassed at his own outburst. "Ya got me wonderin' if I'm a little underdressed," he joked.
The lady hedgehog shook her head with a shy smile. "You're perfect as always," she muttered.
Sonic leaned in and cocked his ear, unable to hear her over the loud music. "Wha'?"
"It's so good to see you!" Amy shouted with a hand cupped around her mouth. "I was just thinking about you!"
With a boyish grin, Sonic raised an eyebrow. "When aren't ya thinkin' about me?"
Amy giggled and shoved his shoulder playfully. "No, I'm serious! I wasn't sure you were going to come out tonight. I'm really glad you're here!"
"Yeah," Sonic motioned towards the atmosphere, circling a finger in the air as he shouted, "This place isn't quite as 'open-concept' as Casino Park, that's for sure." He noticed Amy squinting her eyes and her ears twitching as she struggled to differentiate his voice from all the ambient clamoring and overpowering music in the club. Sonic returned one of his hands to her back and pulled her in close. He leaned forward, his muzzle brushing against her temple so he could speak directly into her ear. "'Might be a little loud and tight compared to our usual hangs, but I'm always up for a new adventure. Especially with my 'bestie'." He punctuated the term of endearment with a playful poke to her spine.
Amy let out a nervous chuckle, trying to shake the goosebumps rising on her arms at the feel of Sonic's breath on her fur. She couldn't remember how or when that title came about. Honestly, the word sounded silly coming from his mouth, but she wore that designation like a badge of honor. It had taken years for Sonic to stop seeing her as some love-struck fan (admittedly, that was partially her own fault) and started considering her a member of the team. She still loved him just as much as she always had, but with time and maturity she learned to respect his boundaries and earned his trust. The girl he once ran away from was now the woman he considered his very best friend. Life was funny like that.
The loud pop track that had been blasting throughout the nightclub dissolved into the next song: a slower, softer R&B ballad. Now that the room was no longer overpowered with booming instrumentals, both hedgehogs realized just how close they were and each took a step backwards. They stood in silence for a moment, awkwardly looking around the room to avoid eye contact with one another.
Amy watched wistfully as couples began to partner up together on the dance floor. With lips pursed, she subconsciously began to sway to the slow melody.
Sonic risked a glance back her way and noted the quiet longing in her jade eyes that studied the other dancers. Despite the fluttering in his belly, he dared himself to break the tension and offered Amy his hand.
"Aren't ya gonna ask me to dance?" he asked with a playful lilt. Amy's mouth went agape, but she took his hand and followed him onto the dance floor without question. She noticed the carefully chosen words of his sentence—a guarded invitation that shirked responsibility from his shoulders onto hers. It was a tactic she noticed Sonic using more frequently on her throughout the years. It was almost comical how the deeper their friendship blossomed and the closer their connection grew, the more strategic he became when interacting with her. But, she had to admit, she didn't mind playing his games. What was Amy Rose good at if not keeping up with Sonic the Hedgehog?
"Didn't see the point. You don't normally stick around long enough for me to ask," she teased with a smirk. Sonic took her left hand, balling it into a fist within his own, and used it to make a stabbing motion at his chest.
"Yowch! Rosy's still got thorns, I see!" he joked and guided that same hand to rest on his shoulder before he slid his own down to her waist. His lime green eyes were practically sparking with excitement as he challenged her. "But are you as quick on your feet as you are with that wit?"
With swift yet coordinated steps, the two hedgehogs began waltzing across the dance floor.
It was no surprise that Sonic was a skilled dancer. Music seemed to naturally flow through him. So, just as easily as he was able to learn to play the guitar without any proper instruction, so too did he effortlessly move and step in perfect harmony with the rhythm. No matter the genre or tempo, he always found a way to put on a lively performance. Watching him dance was invigorating and made you want to join in on the fun.
Of course, dancing with Sonic was a completely different story. Most people would find it far too much of a challenge to keep up with his choreography. He had no patience for amateurs who might stumble from his swift movements and the multitude of steps he'd take even during a 'slow' dance. Experts would find his style to be too unrefined and improvisational, lacking the control and discipline from traditional structure.
Amy Rose was not most people.
She stepped in perfect synchrony with him, their combined musicality making them glide effortlessly along the dance floor. Though Sonic was unpredictable, being in his arms was as familiar to her as breathing. She could easily detect the minute changes in his grip and noticed how his smile would flicker with a hint of mischief, all of which helped her anticipate when he might change direction or twirl her around. One would think with how well they danced together that the two had been rehearsing. In a way, it was true. Amy had dedicated years of her life training to stay on Sonic's heels. Wherever he would lead, she would follow.
Sonic guided her into an inside turn, this time pulling her in so her back was to his chest in a cradle position. "Hmm, I was right," she heard him muse over her shoulder.
Amy gulped, hoping he couldn't feel her pulse accelerating. "Right about what?"
He shifted his weight to dip her back just enough so he could look her in the eyes. "You're a great dancer," he said proudly. When he righted her and returned to their usual position, Amy wore an offended expression and gasped theatrically.
"You doubted me?!" She shoved his shoulder and they both used the momentum to spin individually. She demonstrated some dramatic arm styling to further show off her skills.
Sonic scooped her back into his arms, laughing heartily. Even with their back and forth play-bickering, neither missed a step. "You're normally the one hostin' the parties," he continued. "You're too busy runnin' around making sure everybody else is happy and havin' a good time. It's nice to see you let loose."
Amy's features softened. She might have felt a little disheartened that, indeed, she was usually too focused on others to enjoy parties to the fullest. However, right now all she felt was delight that Sonic had picked up on that, and even more so that he was making such an effort to correct it.
"If you like this, you ought to try Quickstepping with me sometime," Amy winked with a new surge of confidence. "Of course it'd have to be somewhere less crowded. We'd need plenty of room to move."
"You had me at 'quick'!" Sonic exclaimed. The two laughed as they continued their dance.
Much to Amy's dismay, the slow tune eventually drew to a close and the DJ transitioned back to the fast, upbeat tracks expected from a nightclub. She loosened her hold and began to pull away, yet Sonic's hand still lingered on her. He started nodding his head and marching in time with the faster rhythm. "This remix is sick!"
Amy beamed, "It's Vector!"
Sonic slipped his arm around the small of her back and pulled her close. "What?!"
Amy rolled her eyes in defeat; it was impossible to have a conversation over the blaring electropop synths. She twisted around in his arms so he was against her back again. She reached over her shoulder, taking his chin into her hand and directed his gaze towards the DJ booth. When he spotted their crocodile friend across the way, he shouted, "Oh hey! It's Vector!" She tilted her head enough to give him an affirming grin, which he returned. Their smiles faltered slightly as they realized once again how precariously they were positioned. Amy fought the instinct to bashfully pull away; they were already here, and his hands were still on her waist. Instead, she remained still and left it up to Sonic to create distance between them. Yet, he didn't. She exhaled the breath she had been unknowingly holding once she felt him guide her hips to side-step and sway with him and she followed his lead.
It took a second for the two to get over their initial clumsiness, but they quickly let their musicality take over and found themselves more comfortably in sync once again. Amy had to admit, dancing with Sonic was exhilarating. He moved so carefree and stylistically that it instigated her competitive side and willed her to try more daring and bold moves just to keep up with him. His touch was electrifying. They'd never been so close for so long before—outside of escaping from a horde of evil robots, of course—and the feel of his body willingly pressed up against hers caused more of an adrenaline rush than any of their world-saving missions ever had. And his hands were so… curious! It may have started as a means of directing her which ways to turn or to make sure they kept in-line with each other, but it was impossible not to notice how his fingertips would trail down her thigh or how he'd trace the curves of her waist with his palms. The sensations were enough to make her head spin.
Luckily, the tension was also interspersed with their playful repertoire, a staple in their unique friendship. Even though it was difficult to speak over the music, any time one of them would perform a particularly impressive move, the other would cheer or find other goofy ways to encourage more: Amy theatrically fanning herself when Sonic executed a body roll; Sonic comically falling to his knees and clutching his heart when Amy swizzled her hips in a figure-eight shape.
It was silly. It was sexy. It was so… uniquely them. Amy was having a blast, and she hoped tonight would never end.
---
After a couple of songs, the hedgehogs decided to catch up with the rest of the crew. Amy navigated their way to the booth Whisper had secured earlier. The wolf was the first to spot them and waved politely. Tangle and Jewel jumped up from their seats, shouting enthusiastically when the pair made their way over.
"SONIC!"
"YOU MADE IT!"
Amy slid into the booth alongside Whisper and was surprised to find that Sonic sat next to her instead of joining Vector on the opposite side of the table.
"Well yeah, the party doesn't start 'til I show up, after all," Sonic joked, reaching across to bump fists with the lemur.
Jewel's cheeks were flush from the drink she was currently sipping. "Sonic, this place is SOOOO fun! It's even more fun than color-coding my day planner!"
Sonic nodded encouragingly, eyebrows tented, trying not to laugh at the beetle's overenthusiasm. "Oh yeah? That's quite the review!" He looked over at Vector, the only member of the group yet to acknowledge him. The crocodile's arms were crossed and he wore an unamused scowl. Sonic knocked on the table with his knuckle to get his attention. "Hey Big Guy, why the long face?"
"Well I was the coolest guy here until you showed up," Vector rolled his eyes. "Everybody thought I was some big-shot V.I.P. walking in with all these ladies on my arm."
"Aw, don't be like that," Sonic chuckled, feigning an apologetic tone. He wrapped an arm around Amy's shoulder. "Surely me takin' just one of 'em off your hands won't diminish your 'cool' status, right?"
Amy could hardly make out the rest of the conversation over the sound of her own heartbeat flooding her ears. Did she hear that correctly? If she wasn't mistaken, it sounded like he just claimed her as his.
"That's right, Vector! You're SO cool!" Tangle shouted, stretching her tail passed Jewel to poke at his bicep adamantly.
"And chivalrous!" Jewel piped in. "You were the only guy willing to come out with us even when everybody else bailed!"
"Yeah, and who else could walk into a club and schmooze the DJ into letting him run the booth?!" Tangle continued. "And your whole getup, you look like you were born for the club!"
Whisper nodded, hoping that was enough to back her friends' sentiments.
Vector slammed his fist on the table. "YOU'RE ALL JUST SAYIN' THAT SO I'LL BUY YOU ANOTHER ROUND!" he barked, but in truth he was amused by the shower of compliments.
"And your sleuthing skills remain TOP-NOTCH!" Tangle raised her glass, with the other two women following suit. Tangle and Jewel began to chant along with Whisper murmuring: "Vec-tor! Vec-tor! VEC-TOR!"
The crocodile couldn't hold in his laughter any longer and he raised his hands in defeat. "AHAHAHA! Alright, alright! Another round for you she-devils." Lemur, beetle, and wolf all high-fived and congratulated each other on their clever victory.
"I could go for a drink, too," Sonic sat up from the booth. He gently tapped Amy's shoulder again, waking her from her shell-shocked stupor. "What can I get you?"
"Oh! Uh," she hadn't had a chance to look at a menu and she didn't go out enough to have many cocktails memorized. She blurted out the first one she could remember, "Sex on the BᴇᴬCᴴ - !"
The last word ended in a shrill squeak and she clasped her hands over her mouth. Of all the drinks, why did she think of that one?!
Sonic's eyes were wide, equally as startled. But seeing how flustered she was, he quickly got over his own surprise and couldn't resist teasing her. He leaned in with a devilish smile. "Sure, but what do you want to drink?"
"Forget I said that!" Amy tried swatting him away. She was embarrassed enough as it was. Enduring his torture was making her face more scarlet than her dress. "I'll have a strawberry mojito!"
"A mojito? But I thought you wanted Se-"
Amy covered his mouth with her hand, panic in her eyes. If she heard that word come from his lips, she might actually burst into flames right then and there. "Strawberry. Mojito." Even with his muzzle masked, she could tell by the crinkling of his eyes that he was grinning. "Please," she added politely, hesitantly removing her hand.
Sonic laughed and gave her a thumbs up, "One strawberry mojito, comin' up!" He turned to Vector and clapped him on the back. "Alright Mr. V.I.P., you clear a path through the crowd and I'll help ya carry drinks back to the table."
Amy watched the two men make their way towards the bar, her thoughts racing. Sonic was acting so strange tonight! Or… was he? She had this image in her mind that he took to physical affection like oil to water, but come to think of it, that was more the case when they were younger. In recent years not only did he allow her hugs, he reciprocated them. And if she recalled correctly, he was often the one placing his arm around her shoulder without her having to initiate it. The flirty talk… was it really all that new either? In the beginning, she was the only one who teased him and did everything she could to make him blush. Nowadays he dished it right back at her and couldn't be more amused when he'd gotten a rise out of her. When had that started? She couldn't even pinpoint it. They had been playing this game for so long with the rules shifting so gradually that she'd never even noticed the change.
Amy was pulled from her thoughts when she considered how eerily silent the rest of her party was. She turned to the three women smiling at her with a knowing look.
"What?" she guffawed. When the only response she received were giggles, she asked more adamantly. "What?!"
Whisper held a finger to her lips.
"You tell us," Tangle snickered.
Amy bit her cheek but it didn't stop her growing smile. "There's nothing to tell! We were just dancing!"
Jewel and Tangle exchanged looks, nodding sarcastically. "Just dancing," they echoed. Whisper let her bangs fall over her face to hide her quiet laughter. Amy huffed in resignation. Her friends just didn't get it.
Things were different on the dance floor.
---
After the guys returned, the group laughed over stories and drinks. Throughout their socializing, Sonic and Amy took turns pulling one another from the booth to dance whenever a song in particular caught their attention. At one point, the rest of the gang joked about getting 'ditched' by the hedgehogs so many times that the whole crew left the table to form a large dance circle. Even Whisper, the most reserved of the bunch, allowed herself to shimmy her shoulders a bit when Tangle relentlessly danced around her. Amy noted how even as her different friends took turns dancing with Sonic, he never danced with them the same way he would with her. He would instead default to Shuffling beside them, trying (and failing) to teach them how to T-step or perform a Heel-Toe-Hop.
The group eventually reconvened at the booth, exhausted from trying to keep up with the energetic hedgehogs' antics. Jewel groaned how she hadn't used her wings this much in ages, and Vector offered his signature noise-cancelling headphones to Whisper to give her sensitive ears a break from the loud music. Amy was sipping her third mojito when she recognized the melody of the upcoming track.
"OHMYGOD!" She shouted, a little tipsy. "I LOVE THIS SONG!"
"Then let's go!" Sonic motioned to the dance floor with his thumb. Amy held up a finger, taking several large gulps from her drink, determined to finish it before leaving the table. Sonic tapped his foot rapidly, growing impatient. Eventually, he yanked the glass out from Amy's hand and shot down the rest of her beverage himself.
"Hey!" Amy glared but smiled wide as she swatted at him for stealing her booze.
He swallowed and let out a satisfied sigh. "You were takin' too long!" He wiped his mouth and slammed the empty glass down onto the table.
"Is that right?" Amy asked mischievously. "Well if you can't wait, then I'll just-" Without warning, she hooked her arm around his waist and slung him over her shoulder to carry him out to the dance floor. Sonic yelped in shock. "What're you doing?!"
As Amy escorted him away from the table, he stretched his arms out to the rest of the friend group, pretending like he was in need of rescuing.
"Buhh-byyyeeee~!!!" They all cheered and laughed, Tangle using her tail to make a patronizing 'wave-goodbye' motion.
The two hedgehogs continued to dance one song after another. Amy rested her chin on Sonic's shoulder and moved with exaggerated sways as the alcohol caused just enough of a buzz for a pleasant tingle in her brain. Suddenly a thought crossed her mind, and she lifted her head just enough to shout into his ear. "Hey, have you teamed up with Ariem* again?"
Sonic's brows furrowed and he cocked his head at the mention of the ancient Dreamweaver. It had been ages since he and his friends had thwarted Eggman's plans to steal The Reverie for world domination, and frankly, they'd been on so many adventures that he hadn't thought much about it since.
"Whaddya mean?" he asked.
"Because you're making my dream come true!" Amy shouted enthusiastically.
Sonic's head drooped and he groaned with a pained smile. "Criminy, Ames! I know you're corny, but that's gotta be your cheesiest pickup line yet!"
Amy looped both arms around his neck and gently bonked their foreheads together. "Noooo. I know how that sounded, but that's not what I meant!" Their laughs intermingled. "What I mean is, all I wanted to do tonight was dance," She shifted her weight so she could look him in the eyes. She glowed brighter than any spotlight in the club. "Ever since you showed up, you've made my wish a reality. You're always my hero, even when you don't know it!"
Sonic was speechless for a moment, only managing a light chuckle in the form of an exhale. His eyes studied hers, jade orbs sparkling with joy and gratitude. His gaze then traced her lips that formed the most dazzling, genuine smile.
"Amy…" He could've blamed the help of liquid courage, but truly, it was seeing how positively happy she was in this moment that encouraged him to offer a small confession. "I'm not as selfless as you think I am."
Amy buried her face into his neck, clicking her tongue in disagreement. "You're crazy."
"No, I'm serious," Sonic tittered nervously. He took a deep breath, thankful that she had nestled into him so that he didn't have to look directly at her as he continued. "I wasn't plannin' on comin' out tonight. But then I saw that photo you got tagged in of y'all on you're way here…" his fingers lazily traced the space between her two-piece along her back, where fabric met velvety fur. "…And I saw you in this dress… And suddenly all I could think about was how everyone here was gonna be fightin' each other to dance with you if I didn't get to you first."
Amy felt his heartbeat pounding against her chest. He began to laugh, but she could tell it was to try and mask his anxiety from having shared so much. "I don't think I've ever run so fast!"
She hugged him tightly. "I'm glad you did," she admitted with a tender warmth that soothed his nerves. She was thankful for both his companionship and his honesty. "And for the record," she straightened herself upright to give him a wink, "I'd beat everyone in this club away with my hammer if it meant I got to dance with you."
---
"Last call, everyone, last call," The DJ spoke into the microphone. "While you're at it, don't forget to tip those lovely bartenders who've been keepin' you refreshed all night. I've got a few more tracks to end your evenin' on a high note."
"Damn it," Amy hissed, seated and folded over on herself to futz with one of her shoes. "I knew I shouldn't have bet Vector that we were going to make it 'til closing time." Their friends had headed home hours ago, but Amy wasn't going to lie just to win a bet. She sighed, "And I was so hoping for that 'last dance', too…"
Sonic slid a glass of water over to her side of the table while he sipped from his own. He tutted with mock disapproval. "Tsk, tsk. Callin' it quits so soon? I can't believe you're tired already." He shook his head and took another sip.
Amy sat upright and placed her hands on her hips, glaring at him with a daring smile. "Oh no, trust me," she leaned across the table and with a sultry tone she insisted, "I have endless stamina."
Sonic sputtered on his water from the double entendre. Amy continued back in her usual voice, "What I don't have is titanium feet!"
Hoping she didn't catch his awkward fumble, he pursued with teasing the pink hedgehog. "You've always been able to chase after me for miles without any issue. Why's dancing any different?"
"I'm not normally running in stilettos!" Amy challenged, lifting one of her legs to demonstrate her high heels that had a significantly taller arch than her casual boots. Sonic blushed. Those heels may have been a pain, but damn was he grateful for how well they accentuated her long, toned legs. He realized a little too late that he had been gawking, and quickly shifted his focus to finishing his glass of water.
"O-okay, that's fair," he conceded. He dropped the finished cup on the table and stood up, beckoning with his hands. "If they're hurtin' ya so bad, take 'em off and I'll carry you home."
"Really?" Amy asked.
Sonic casually shifted his weight to one side with his wrist against his hip. "Yeah. Really. I'm the one who made you dance all night, after all. I owe ya."
That wasn't exactly true. Amy had dragged him out onto the dance floor just as much as he had her. But she'd never turn down an offer to be carried by him.
---
Sonic jogged just fast enough to make it a smooth ride back to her house, but not anywhere close to his usual speed. He claimed it was so she wouldn't get sick on him—despite both having sobered up by now—but Amy had the sneaking suspicion it was because he wanted to stretch this evening out for as long as possible. Their constant laughter and bantering filled the otherwise quiet night air.
They worked together to unlock her door and opted for only switching on the side table lamp so as not to hurt their eyes from spending most of the evening in the dark. When Sonic set her down onto the couch, she practically melted into the cushions. She buried her toes into the rug, purring from how soothing the plush fibers felt against her paws. "Ughhhh that's heaven!"
"Heh, glad to hear it," he said softly. He could tell she was beat. Her quills were disheveled and her makeup was a bit smudged from having danced and sweated all night. However, even now, he found her breathtaking. While her eyes were closed, he reached out to brush her bangs from her face, but hesitated at the last second. Instead, he massaged the back of his neck and turned away. "And uh… I'm glad you had fun tonight. I had a lotta fun too."
A warm squeeze to his left hand brought his attention back to the woman on the couch, now sitting upright. Her voice was quiet, hopeful. "I'm still bummed we didn't make it to the last song… Can we have just one more dance?"
Sonic raised an eyebrow at her. "…But your paws?"
"I feel better now," she quickly insisted. "They felt better as soon as I took my shoes off, honest."
He narrowed his eyes at her with some scrutiny. After a beat, he shook his head incredulously but his lips curved into a smile as he pulled out his phone. "So what you're sayin' is…" He scrolled through his media player thoughtfully. "I gave you a free ride for nothin'?"
Amy stood up excitedly, any previous signs of exhaustion immediately disappeared. "I couldn't walk home barefoot, could I?"
"Mmhmm," he teased with a tone full of mirth. He could hear the swish, swish, swish of her tail wagging against the skirt of her dress. When he found the right track, he set the phone down on the coffee table and hit play.
Amy wasn't expecting to hear a slow, soft piano ballad. Sonic offered his hand and as she took it, his other arm slipped around her lower back and pulled her in close until they were cheek-to-cheek. Her eyes widened and it took her a moment to gather the wherewithal to slide her hand from his bicep to drape it across his shoulders. Once secure in each other's arms, Sonic began to slowly shift his weight from side to side until they each delicately swayed with the music.
This was nothing like the last several hours they spent in the nightclub. In her empty living room, warmed only by the dim light of a lamp and the closeness of their bodies, the atmosphere was reticent yet electric. The melody playing from Sonic's phone sounded muted and tinny compared to the booming speakers at the venue. Yet, Amy preferred this. While in the club, her senses were completely overloaded. Now, her ears could hyperfocus on the collective sounds of their heartbeats. No longer masked by various colognes and perfumes of partygoers, she could fully appreciate the scent of his fur, warm and earthy with a dash of salt and alcohol. Without the bone-rattling bass, here she could savor every shift in his muscles that pressed against her, how his broad chest rose and fell with his breath, and revel in his fingertips making feather-light strokes to her pelt. Sonic rested his temple to hers and without any further space between them they swayed with the music as if they were one entity.
Since neither of them were speaking, Amy decided to tune into the lyrics. It was a tender serenade about friendship and fear of unrequited feelings. Did Sonic know what the song was about? He sought it out specifically; was it special to him? Did it make him think about her? About them? How many times had he listened to it and, when he had, had he ever imagined they'd one day be listening to it together… like this? Thoughts swirled through her mind, giving her a rush more dizzying than any spirits could.
Neither knew who initiated it, but at some point their handhold was released and now Amy had both arms wrapped around Sonic's neck while both of his framed the small of her back in an intimate embrace. As they held one another, time and the outside world melted away.
The song was over. Yet, they remained, swaying in the silence. Neither wanted to be the first to pull away. Perhaps if they didn't part, eventually the warm glow from the lamp would envelope them like amber and preserve them right here in this moment for eternity.
Amy felt Sonic's breath tickle the nape of her neck as he whispered, "Aren't ya gonna ask me to kiss you?"
Amy leaned back just enough to look him in the eyes. Her hands dragged from the back of his neck to frame his face so she could properly read his expression, confirm this wasn't some kind of sick prank. Heat radiated from his muzzle and warmed her fingertips. His half-lidded eyes were honest. Yearning. Shifting her gaze to his lips…
Oh, how desperately she wanted to give in. But she couldn't, not just yet. She'd played by his rules enough for one evening.
She shook her head, her eyes searching his. "Do you want to kiss me?"
He scoffed, amused that she left the ball in his court. Well played, Amy Rose. He'd backed himself into this corner. There was no denying it now.
He dipped his head. "Yes."
Their lips met. It was a gentle, chaste kiss, soft and quiet but full of a thousand unspoken words. It broke sooner than Amy would have liked and it took all her willpower to not immediately steal a second kiss from him. They rested their foreheads together, silently basking in the rush of butterflies that filled their stomachs.
With a nervous inhale, Amy gathered her courage to ask just one more question. Two simple words that held the weight of the world and the rest of her fate in their humble syllables: "What now?"
Sonic combed his fingers through her quills. With a lopsided grin, he replied, "You lead, I'll follow."

On that note, Eggman is still holding strong up there after almost an entire year! 😂

If I come in tomorrow and he's no longer up there, it won't be because he failed me lol It'll be because of The Man™
