Book Review: The Witch's Art of Incantation, 2nd ed. by Roger J. Horne

10/10, I'd buy again for what it is: but you should know what it is before you buy it

This is a review of the second edition, which is about 100 pages longer than the original and contains 55 additional incantations.

What's it about?

This is a book of translated and edited historical and folk incantations to be used in syncretic folk witchcraft or any form of witchcraft. These incantations are grouped into 9 categories:

Seeking the Old Ones

Calling to the Green World

Love and Spurned Love

Coinage and Prosperity

Curses and Maledictions

Spirit Flight and Second Sight

Blessings and Benedictions

Heretical Psalmistry

Miscellaneous latinate charms

Besides a brief introduction, the book is just incantations.

It's not a spellbook. It doesn't tell you to collect candles or herbs, or what day of the week to work them on, or the moon phase, or whatever. Just as it says on the tin, it's a book of incantations.

However, Horne does have a very handy section at the beginning called Approaches to the Art of Incantation.

Here he describes methods and techniques to help empower incantations (I recommend not skipping it), a framework for understanding the power of words, and folk magic actions that may be combined with incantations, such as the burning of candles with pins stuck in, or speaking over poppets.

If you've skipped Folk Witchcraft, definitely check out this section.

(As Horne explains in the introduction, the first ed. of this book was a companion book to his other text, Folk Witchcraft. Apparently, Folk Witchcraft provided a great deal of context and lore surrounding the use of the incantations themselves.

The second ed. has been developed into a standalone text, but Horne still recommends looking to Folk Witchcraft if you want more context.)

Where do these incantations come from?

Horne makes it clear that he primarily sourced incantations from Europe and America (primarily Appalachia) not because they're particularly better in any way, but because these are the areas his ancestors and practice stem from. He makes an outspoken statement against any perceived Eurocentric authority, and warns people to not take his area of focus to mean there is more power within those cultures than within others.

That being given, these incantations are sourced historically from at least the first century onward, from a wide variety of sources, including Greco-Roman, Irish, Scottish, Cornish, Welsh, French, German, Appalachian, Icelandic, and more.

When possible, Horne notes where the incantation originated from, and in what manner he edited it.

All of these incantations have been edited for use by the modern reader; they are Horne's original adaptations. This is not a historical reference.

An example?

To give you an idea of the contents, this is one of the shorter incantations in the book, "A Call to Fire."

A Call to Fire Fire untamed, lustrous, and bright, power behind the sun, moon and every star. Aetherial fire, source of life, most splendid flower, heat-bringer, light-bringer, hear me, radiant fire. [Origin: 3 BC - 1 AD. Greco-Roman. Adapted and rearranged with poetic license after The Hymns of Orpheus. pg. 100.]

This incantation may be used to charm offering candles, to consecrate sacred fires, to call forth salamanders or fire elementals, to honor a god or spirit of fire, and so forth - the application is up to you.

Is the variety solid? Are they versatile enough for use even if you don't consider yourself to be a folk witch?

A big reason I recommend this book so highly isn't just because it's handy for me, but because I think it is very versatile.

The variety of what's presented is exceptional; there are charms to hail the seasons and the moons, the Old Ones and plant allies, to cure grief and wrath, to call a lover, to steal wealth, to conjure all varieties of helpful spirits, to reveal a thief, to hag-ride, to skin-change, to induce second-sight, to charm your cards for better readings, and I could go on and on.

In addition, because Horne sources everything where he can, it's a wealth to look not only at his adaptations but compare the charms to the historical originals, and thereby gain inspiration for developing your own incantations.

The best part for me is that they're all usable. It's not a spellbook where you can't get some ingredients so you can't use some spells. They're incantations that you pair with whatever spell elements you want to include, including just using them on their own.

But are they sexy? Will I feel like I'm living deliciously?

Yes. You will feel like you are living deliciously. You will feel like ye olde wytche who feeds blood and honey to their familiar, and steals the potency of men at night as you roam in your second skin; you will believe you may only be harmed with a silver bullet when you take the form of a hare to rob milk from cows.

Real quick, what's up with those 'heretical psalms' and latinate charms?

The last (and smallest) portion of the book more heavily leans into syncreticism. Horne's attitude in the book is that folk witchcraft is by practicality and oftentimes necessity a syncretic one, and that witches use what's on hand in order to get the job done. He references the importance of the influence of the Church on modern cunning traditions, including both the adoption of psalms and also of latinate language.

Twenty-three psalms are printed in the book along with recommended magical uses, along with a list of the magical uses of psalms (which you'd have to look up yourself).

Finally, Horne has a fifteen incantations in Latin. Or, latinate, as he keeps clarifying. He hasn't taken charms and translated them into Latin, rather he's edited historical folk charms that were recited in liturgical Latin by the people who used them - again emphasizing syncreticism in folk magic.

If you're not into Christian syncreticism, I doubt this section would be of use to you. This section constitutes 80 total pages out of 319, or about a quarter of the book. Personally I'd still get it for the more pagan incantations even if I didn't want the more syncretic ones, but it's certainly not to everyone's tastes.

(Be advised that there is a lot of Scottish folk magic in this book, plenty of which calls on Mary as divine authority. Obviously you can change the incantations as you please, but if you're allergic to these things, be aware they are peppered throughout the text.)

Chicken, who would you personally recommend this book to?

I would recommend this book to a practitioner who is:

Ready to start seriously investing in their personal repertoire of spells

Confident enough to experiment with spellcrafting

Sick and tired of spellbooks that recommend inaccessible ingredients, and just want building blocks to make their own full-format spells

Wanting a resource that helps with getting practical magic done within their current paradigm, without having to adopt a lot of new ritual aspects or theories

Looking for inspiration to expand their current practice without having to restart their practice

Looking for resources on Christian or heretical witchcraft

Anyone seeking resources on the power of words in practical sorcery

I'm a pagan, not a witch, and I love hymns and incantations. Would I like it?

To be honest, I doubt it.

Yes, the book starts with incantations to the Old Ones, who are ostensibly gods; but anyone with an eye to see can tell that the incantations all either relate to the Devil or the Queen of Witches. Also, one for Fenris ("darkling wolf") and one for the Sun.

Like 5 of the incantations may clearly be associated with Greek gods, but those gods are not named and the association appears to be selected based on their relevance to witchcraft.

A vast majority of all incantations in the book are related to spellwork and conjuring nature spirits. These incantations were designed for use in magic, which includes calling spirits and compelling action; not so much veneration or worship.

Readability and Accessibility

The physical quality of the book is disappointing. And that's not the author's fault and has no bearing on the actual contents, but right out of the box I was afraid the poor thing was going to fall apart. However it was cheap as hell so I have nothing to complain about, this thing was like $15 for a paperback. It has the quality you would expect from such a cheap purchase.

The text is sort of an artsy one? It's a serif font that's not too out there, but it's smaller than I was expecting, and my eyes don't love it. You will have to find your reading glasses for this one. All his books I bought are published in this typeface so I assume it's a choice.

Horne loves big paragraphs and long sentences. I find his writing style to be clear and easy to follow, but it's not a lower grade reading level. You may expect a maximum of two paragraphs per page in the prose portions.

The incantations themselves are broken up into much more manageable parts, always containing no more than 2 lines per paragraph break.

I believe Horne did this on purpose to compel the reader to find their own cadence in the incantations. But, it has the added effect of contributing to readability. The way each incantation is split up makes it very easy to follow and not lose your place.

6/10 for physical manufacture; I really wish the typeface was less artsy and more standard, but I could still read it through, especially once I got used to it.

long ramble, progress update, & potential release timeframe below:

hii! i got a lot of coding done and i think im finally satisfied with how the game looks (for now…)

here are some screenshots of what some of it will look like on mobile!

the friendship and romance levels shown in the relationship menu are just random as is the blurb for Aesop’s thoughts, they’re just for the example! (also characters thoughts are hidden by default, you click to reveal, then hide, them)

the stat bars were giving me hell but i finally figured them out with the the help of some forums and tumblr posts

i liked how in when twilight strikes by evertidings, the menu buttons (i.e. profile, stats, relationships) are listed at the top of the page so i took inspiration from that! and the many IFs that have a splash (?) screen at the beginning with the title

compared to when i started using twine (i think august 2023 was the first time i gave it a try), i’ve learned so much and there’s still so much to learn as well, i think coding has become my favorite part (making things looks pretty hehe)(with the help of amazing templates & ppl smarter than me, they do the heavy lifting fr)

with all the coding done (appearance wise) it’s lock in time for the revised prologue and chapter 1

the prologue has undergone a fair bit of change with the help of feedback & i’ve (hopefully) better established the setting and story.

some things that have changed besides wording and sentence structure, etc.: being able to choose what you did as a job (ex. working at the family inn) and meeting a new character (more like an old friend?)(no spoilers:))

some things i’ve been considering (SLIGHT SPOILER FOR CH.1 MAYBE): merging the revised prologue and chapter 1 into just the prologue bc chapter 1 differs a bit from the other chapters, but then the prologue would maybe be too strange timeframe wise? it’s a time skip after the events of the prologue (is that considered a spoiler, i don’t think so but???) that connects to the next chapters so maybe it’d just be better as its own chapter? or dropping the revised prologue by itself along with the updated ui/appearance then chapter 1 sometime after, or dropping the revised prologue and chapter 1 together, idk these are all just ideas i’ve been thinking about maybe i’ll do a poll

if you have anything you’d like to see, for example a specific job your MC worked, certain personality traits, or something like that, feel free to let me know & i’ll take them into consideration! i think now is the best time to add things bc it’s early development days & it’ll be easier to do so now than later

i’ve also decided to lean a little more into the supernatural aspect which i’m excited for (one specific thing really, i can’t wait to get to it🤭) the story’s world itself is fairly grounded in reality (as in the supernatural is unknown to most) but i’m looking forward to exploring it more

what you’re probably reading this for: depending on how i end up going about the prologue-chapter 1 merge decision & whether anything is added from requests/feedback, i’m aiming for a june release, july at the latest (fingers crossed). now that the appearance and function coding is complete (besides stat/choice tracking & other story related things), finishing the writing and coding it in is all that’s left

my schedule has done a 180 & some things are less than ideal at moment but it should all (hopefully) go smoothly from here! should anything change, i’ll let you all know

i love the idea of dick and a bunch of his friends getting a house together with the intent of being Normal for the first time in a while, which means being absolute menaces as most 20 smth yr old guys are

very much known for being a party house bordering a frat but all the guys r so nice that it’s rlly hard to think of them like that. it’s a space where he can let go, feel like himself and with the encouragement of his friends, dick puts the brakes on like relationship hunting and just has fun..

he’s been in pretty committed relationships since he was old enough to be and has always struggled with casual dating let alone sleeping with people he barely know. but when dick learns there r ppl out there looking for the same thing and not everyone wants to b the next future ex mr/mrs. grayson it makes it a lil easier to be his charming self with no bounds <33

and then he mets you and it’s the usual routine, flirting you to his bedroom which is in the basement—of course—well alllllmost doing so until you vanish out of his grasp for reasons dick cannot discern (you weren’t here for him silly)

and while he’s not like one of those oh i wanted to hit and couldn’t so im gonna chase you types, dick does have to reconcile with the fact your friends with roy and spend a lot of time at the house now

which also means he learns how cool you r and how goofy he feels for just tryna sleep with you

and despite his friends vouching for him you really only see (and have heard the numerous rumours) dick as a rich playboy and that’s not for you. plus he’s def a business or poli sci major……….but with a psych minor bc it feels the most practical despite how boring dick finds most of his classes

though when he realizes your both in a psych elective together he’s all toothy grins and obnoxious air which isn’t helping his case but of course he’s a decent student and when you mentioned hating statistics—you were stuck with the worse prof outta the two—dick jumped at the chance to help

you were sooooooo skeptical and even though agreed you kept brushing him off until dick just started helping you when you were over to hang out. he drops a textbook in your lap while sitting in roy’s bed or starts reviewing your notes and adding examples while your hanging out on the living room floor building lego sets with everyone else.

and dick did that a lot—sure it was his house and roy was his best friend along with all of his other housemates but dick never hesitated to insert himself into whatever you were doing when you came over. and it shouldn’t surprised you but everyone being so..unbothered by it had you confused. like maybe that’s how dick is but it spoke bounds to their closeness and was the First time you actually saw a little more to dick than just some campus hottie douchebag who threw parties to get laid

and while you weren’t about to tell dick that, you did start coming over with the intent of working on stats together. it usually meant dick having to re-lecture whatever your prof barely managed to explain and helping you with the page long equations needed for assignments

and dick keeps it as platonic as possible, on a mission to prove he’s not the person you think he is and not only because he wanted to be with you—well yeah he does—but because dick cares what you think about him. he knows his friends care about you and value what you have to say and he wants you to know it’s the same for him

and maaaybe you see that too but dick needs to suffer a little more

bonus: you talk to dick abt ppl you’re interested in at some point (either genuinely or to mess with him) when he insists on always hanging out with you and roy. and while he gives advice with a smile, still trying to prove his capacity for mature, platonic relationships, dick screams into his pillow later that night when he goes over the convo again and again and agai—

i have quite a few bsd ocs but haven't gotten around to making blogs for them so ig ill just talk abt Yashima (whose blog is @the-crows-said-hi if you wanna check it out)

ummmm where do i start?? ig i can yap abt how Yashima as a character connects to the namesake of their ability, Crow Boy. Crow Boy is a children's picture book written by Atsushi Iwamatsu, more known by his pen name, Taro Yashima.

On the first page, we are told that on the first day of school, a missing boy was found under the schoolhouse floor. Nobody knew or recognized the kid, so they gave him a nickname. Chibi, because 'he was very small', as the book says.

As I described in Yashima's intro post, Mori found them hiding after their small group was massacred, I imagine he found them in a similar fashion. Also, Yashima suffered from malnourishment in his most developing years, which made him shorter than most of the cast (not chuuya lmao). It's not set in stone but they're anywhere from 5'4 to 5'6.

The next few pages describe that the boy was afraid of everyone, so he did not interact with others and was left alone at all times and found other, more mundane things to entertain himself. Yashima was in a similar situation when first joining the PM.

For these reasons, many kids picked on Chibi, both younger and older. Calling him names like 'stupid' and 'slowpoke'. In the PM and possibly in their hometown they were teased for their size or that they don't have a decent education.

But, this is only if I decide to add it bc at this moment it's just an idea, namely Dazai since Yashima was his subordinate. And all know how Dazai treated Akutagawa during training, so it would go beyond a few mean words. However, I am hesitant about adding this to Yashima's backstory because I don't know if other rp-ers would go with it. Like, if other Dazais would treat Yashima like that trauma happened.

Then, in the story, we get a time skip five years later to sixth grade, the last grade of their school, with the sentence '...slowpokes or not, day after day Chibi came trudging to school.' The sixth-grade class was taught by a man named Mr. Isobe.

Mr. Isobe is described as 'a friendly man with a kind smile.' The next pages discuss how impressed Mr. Isobe was with Chibi and generally how this teacher had taken a liking to the lonely boy.

This Mr. Isobe figure in Yashima's life was maybe a person in their old group or a kind PM member, but more likely the old group itself represented this one kind man. Since Yashima was so young (eleven to fourteen) it proved the 'it takes a village to raise a baby' saying true.

Everyone is shocked to see that Chibi is on the stage for that year's school talent show, supposedly about to mimic the voices of crows. And then he does, the entire life cycle of crows and how different emotions affect the bird's cries.

This ties into Yashima's ability. In which he can communicate with crows by mimicking their caws, this is also how they summon crows within a 100-mile radius to their side.

In the book, everyone attending is impressed and goes as far as to start crying. Not because of the crow impression, but because of the story it told and the reminder that in all of those six long years, even while being bullied, Chibi hadn't missed a single day of class.

This is where Yashima differs from Chibi.

Yashima never received this level of praise, the closest being in that group of theirs back on the streets. Which is what their chasing. The praise, the feeling of belonging that Chibi (kind of) achieved in the end.

The story ends with the boy's life after sixth grade. He would occasionally come to the village to sell things, but no longer was he nicknamed Chibi. Instead, he was titled 'Crow Boy', a name he seemed to wear with the faintest sense of pride.

you don't have to answer this, but I just wanted to know how you write longform fics or just long pieces in general. it's one of the things I've struggled with as a writer, and I'm having a hard time trying to figure out how I could go about it or do it.

I'd be so grateful if you could provide some advice or suggestions 🥹🥹

i want u to know that i saw this ask when u sent it, but i had a 5hr drive today and wanted to make sure i had time to answer this!! it's under the cut bc i yapped a bit <33

so one thing that i feel the need to say up top is that i never go into pieces with a "goal" length/word count (often times my fics end up being longer than i expected/intended). because i never really write with the goal of a specific length in mind, these are things that i think have helped me write more cohesive and narratively fulfilling pieces in general, which tends to make my fics longer

my first thing is planning/outlining!! i used to just write my fics start to finish in one go with little to no planning, and since i've started slowing down and taking my time outlining/planning beforehand (and even during the drafting process i continue adding to my outline), i've seen the average lengths of my fics go up a lot. you don't have to have every single scene, moment, and piece of dialogue planned out before start writing (lord knows i never do), but you should have a pretty good idea of the major story beats, character dynamics, and any important conflicts, and make sure it's written down in a way that's easy for you to refer back to while you write. never think you're gonna keep it all in your head

build out your characters' lives!! i love introducing a good b-plot involving the main character's friends (see: strawberry sunday) that doesn't take too much attention away from the main plot that it seems out of place, but instead complements the main plot and allows there to be space in between those major plot beats for the readers and the characters to breathe. it also helps make your characters feel more well-rounded and real to the readers if you throw in a scene of their daily life at school or work or with their friends/family both to add texture to them but also to your world. it can also be good to use an establishing scene towards the beginning of their daily life, then a similar one towards to the end that shows any character development, or some other impactful change that happened during your story. instead of just telling us that everything in your character's life changed, show us how it did (or didn't! or maybe it only changed a little, but the little change was important, too)

in a similar vein, build out your world!! im not saying to spend ten pages describing an intricate magic system to us that has little bearing on the plot itself, but feel free to weave in extra details about where/when we are and how the characters interact (or dont!) with the world around them (even if its our normal old world in the modern day)

and i mean i guess my last thing that's really helped me is just sort of getting out my head when it comes to writing? like, not forcing myself to write everyday, not having any sort of word count goals, no posting schedule, etc. just letting myself sit with my ideas for a while and really play around and have fun with them. it's made writing fic something that i look forward to doing when i come from work, or when the weekend is approaching, and i genuinely am making probably my favorite things that i've ever made right now. and they happen to be pretty long!!

i am a Dark Daenerys believer. no, i don’t hate her - in fact, i really love her, although i do hate her show counterpart - I just think her arc is heading towards a dark path and being a villain protagonist is the more interesting route for her character.

I JUST FINISHED A REREAD and i Have started a rewatch of the tv series as a form of torture.

i first read this series when i was 16 in like 2012-2013. i love to bitch about the takes i’ve seen. i sometimes reblog really old ass graphics bc they deserve new life even tho the creators are long since deactivated. i sometimes make graphics that look like they’re from 2014 bc we should bring that style back dammit i hate the typography movement going on rn.

big on tagging triggers so lmk (i’ll tag for all characters & major triggers but i’m fine with adding a specific one if asked and don't worry about it being a "weird" trigger - if sean bean's face or knives or wolves or whatever trigger you, i'm happy to tag for that!). my spoiler policy is that i’ll tag everything from this season as “hotd spoilers” and any of the Big Events with “episode title spoilers” but i can’t guarantee I can be consistent longer than like 2 days though i will try!! i Will be talking about any book canon events tho, the books have been out for years either you know how to avoid them or you know everything, i’m not tagging that.

tossing the tech issue out in case anyone might have an idea I haven't already tried:

Issue is that as of the last weekish? or so? on some sites and on a few of the vids I've recorded via my laptop, videos won't play correctly. By that, I mean they go all old school green pixelated as they play and will lag a fuck ton. Reloading the page sometimes fixes it, sometimes pausing and starting again does, other and frankly most times I can't get it to work as normal at all. There are a few videos on each affected site that I'm going back to as testing to see if they keep giving this issue whenever I play them; thus far it's been seemingly random as to when and why (at least to me, very likely the issue is obvious to someone more familiar with current tech)

I've run the built in and downloadable troubleshooters (including system diagnostics and all that jazz where I get to open the commands and type in whatever they advise and hope it works. It hasn't.) All have said that both software and tech are in working order. I've tried to update drivers, via Dell and Microsoft, but again both say all drivers are up to date. Intel driver search also said I have the most current driver for my graphics card in particular.

I've tried a few of the extra troubleshooting options provided in a help thread on Microsoft's site that was from this year, so clearly others are having this issue. The guy in the thread dealing with it said none of this worked for him either, and the thread closed without him stating he ever found out how to resolve it unfortunately. None of the suggested options have fixed it for me though.

I should note, no issue w/video games!! everything there is working as normal, no real issue w/frame rate or anything graphics related (aside from GTA online forgetting to load a sidewalk or road or two, but that's been happening for ages on every device I've ever played it on lmao.)

I feel so stupid. I used to be better at fixing things like this but I feel like I'm missing something obvious to clear this up. It's affecting my ability to upload my vids to P H and I literally just hit the bronze tier in their tier program so I HAVE to keep uploading more regularly to keep it (it means slightly more ad money; I need one hundred earned to cash out and I'm only at like. thirty one bucks rn so the ad money really does add up over time, a little more would be awesome.)

If any of y'all have the slightest idea on how to fix this, please reach out. I can give more detail abt what I've already tried to do to fix it, and even if I've already tried whatever you might suggest I'm more than ready to try it again and hope it works the second go! I'm really hoping this isn't an actual graphics card issue bc A. I'm not confident enough to get into my laptop to muck with it like I was with my old one in college (she had an actual CD drive and easy to get into back panel to check on fans and such), B. idk how much those are rn but I'm gonna guess Too Much, and C. every trouble shooter that involved checking the graphics card said it was coming up golden, working exactly as it should. I'm at a loss and like I said, probably missing something obvious; if any of you can see it let my dumb ass know please!

Headcanons I often think about when it comes to Hippolyta and her time in the JSA:

We do know canonically:

Poker Night is on Tuesdays, every Tuesday. She’s won several times, enough for banter about it at her funeral.

She lived with Jay and Joan (implied on a couch- which moved to a room). This caused a lot of side eye from Joan… that and the Themyscira trips. Which are also canon?? Jay Garrick hung out on Themyscira… that’s the tweet.

Now of course you have to have an imagination when you’re given 10 comics of this subject, and half of them she’s a background character… or worst dead.

Ted and her are booty calls. That’s it, according to everything besides him being sad about her death.

Noncanonically:

She hated Ted… from the first meeting to their first mission together (orchestrated by Alan because he was tired of their bickering). He always liked her.

I don’t think it was just booty calls / heat of the moment thing between them. She just knew she had to return home eventually. They were basically counting down to their breakup (aka when the JSA did)

It’s messy asf when Hippolyta actually returns home from WWII and her reasonings because it’s basically skipped and she’s home but I know there were goodbyes, and I’d like to think she got to see the end of them.

Alan is her favorite. She started the “Big Guy” thing with Alan, though she knew how powerful he really was. Jay’s a close second, Ted falls third.

There’s a headcanon on blanddcheadcanons about her shipping Jay and Alan, and it’s true. She also fully believes Molly is a coverup for Alan. Her gaydar is crazy, and it went crazy in the 40’s.

I think the Amazons love Jay Garrick 🤷 who doesn’t

Starman #69 (yes literally) showed us Polly saving the boys by recruiting their wives/girlfriends and Johnny Thunder’s niece. I think she’s their favorite woman on the team.

“Aunt Polly” 100%, Sylvester, Sandy (especially), Dinah Lance, Courtney- all of em. SHES A MOMMA, OF COURSE SHES TAKING KIDS IN.

Speaking of Dinah: Polly was around for her childhood, makes her hella old- don’t talk about it. But super cute idea to think of Ted and her being Aunt and Uncle. Ted telling Dinah about Wonder Woman.

Her and the women on the team:

Libby and her bickered, never saw eye to eye- but saved each other countless of times. (this is kinda canon bc of The Way of the Amazon short comic in the 80 page giant, same issue for sandra*)

Sandra was Hippolyta’s secret, she admired Sandra in more ways than one. Of course it’s the 40’s- so they never acted on it but it was definitely present in their everyday interactions. The team took notice…

Libby definitely didn’t like lesbians. You can just tell she’s like that. Jesse really has a shitty momma.

Hippolyta hates that Libby was a shitty mom.

Firebrand and her were actually really friendly, they worked a lot together putting the meetings together as secretary and the first point of contact for the president. (I’m 88% sure she met Justin by guarding Roosevelt so like take that with a grain of salt)

Polly was in charge of the meetings, not coffee. She’s an important secretary, not Bruce Waynes.

HOT TAKE: I think Irene from Wildcat’s past (Jake’s Mother) should’ve just been Hippolyta, she finally gets a biological kid and the kid gets taken 🤷 would’ve been a goat storyline adding an amazonian touch in it.

Anyways: posting this because I always start a fanfiction with these tropes in mind, but never put it all together. Figured somebody here would enjoy it even if it’s just as wildcat plot points 😅

im so ugly was a semi existing way too old clintbucky WIP that went nowhere and i could not figure out what to do with it and then i watched the movie self reliance and thought. well. what if i turned that into a clintbucky AU using some of what i already have? bc i think the main character could very easily be clint. and here we are.

Bucky drags on the smoke, standing huddled from the rain under the awning of the building he lives in, scrolling idly on his phone through personal ads on Craigslist. He hasn't got a clue when he picked up this habit, maybe to feel more like a real person, like the faceless people of the internet desperately reaching out for some small connection will spark something in him. Not that any of them have ever given him cause to reply. Maybe it's only because they're good for a laugh, though. His eyes catch on a truly sideways attempt to roleplay an exciting dating experienced, and whoever this guy is he's insanely committed to the role he's chosen. The ad is written from the desperate point of view of a man being hunted for sport as part of a game he's playing, the chance to win a ton of money if he makes it through a week while unknown assailants are after him. Asking the anonymous people of the internet if someone could stay by his side for the remaining time to ensure he won't get killed. Having to admit he's reluctantly amused, Bucky replies. After all, might be a good thing to actually try to make a human connection here instead of endlessly scrolling through other people's problems without doing a thing about it. At least this promises to be some type of entertaining.

Max sighed and poured from the bottle she was still holding into the forgotten cup. “I was just told ‘zhat will not help’,” he snarked, even as he gratefully accepted the drink. “It is certainly not a long-term solution,” Max agreed, now pouring a cup for herself, “I fail to see what can be done immediately, so until we can piece together who you are having visions about and how we can best take care of it…” She trailed off, raising the cup to her mouth, her eyes lifting to the second landing and softening in the way they only ever did for Anne. Jack turned his head to see her exiting their room, shirt billowing where she hadn’t bothered to tuck it in.

twin tag is a whole 23 pages of notes i have comparing max and silver's journey through season one of black sails that i intend to continue and do for the rest of the show as well. because i truly needed to take the time and compare each and every action the both of them take in each and every episode and point at them and scream. idk. distorted reflections of each other. the same character in wildly different circumstances.

So, when Silver sees the page on the cook, puts together that it’s valuable and he might take advantage of that, he works independently to do so, haphazardly piecing his plan together as he goes to fall in with the Walrus crew. Max has to warm herself and work cooperatively with Silver, gaining his trust and proving her usefulness to be allowed into this plan. Neither method is lesser than the others, they are both borne of necessity required by their positions and grabbing an opportunity where you see it, when you see it. Where Silver standing over the dead body of the cook on the merchant ship is undoubtedly suspicious, that suspicion is put on hold for more pressing matters, after all there was just a bloody battle between the two ships and who can say what the truth really is? If Max were to have killed Silver for the page, she could not have claimed the same and likely would have been punished by her superiors as well as the Walrus crew for doing so, her survival would likely be put into question. They are both very aware of the consequences of both the actions they do take as well as the ones they avoid.

[Magi reread] Night 71: Alibaba

Alibaba looks so smol next to Sinbad, it's a serious situation but I'm just laughing

Judar's awkward teenage crush. I feel like he could've bonded about it with Alibaba if not for the fact that he'd rather choke on his stupid staff than admit there was a time he was into the guy.

Even though literally everybody knew.

I cannot explain this, but I really like this panel. Idk, might be because I'm a sucker for Judar & Alibaba, mostly platonic (but potentially one-sided on Judar's side, bc it's just hilarious). They just have the potential to be the funniest bitches alive (or somewhat alive), and I can respect that. Like, it's such a refreshing friendship in Magi, where they're just fucking assholes towards each other. I just love the idea of them being so fucking petty, and absolutely dragging out some old shit any chances they get, but also being super ride-or-die for each other, as long as Judar doesn't cross some lines, in which case Alibaba knocks him down.

But also you can always read it as Judar's way of flirting, and I think that a very funny idea, too.

I love Alibaba. I know you know. There's no way to miss it, given how much I talk about him. But, just, the fact that this is such a horrible situation, and he's still willing to fight.

There's also something about him being so... calm. Well, maybe that's not the right word. It's more like he's not overthinking the way he usually it. It's a cool contrast, given how often he panics (for good reasons). But I think that it just manages to show how bad the situation is. It gives you the sense that at this point, it literally cannot get any worse, so panicking won't help.

But that doesn't mean he's alright with anything, actually. He's determined to keep others safe, and accepts that "at all costs" might be truly ALL costs.

There it is. No panic, just pure determination. Ugh, I love to see it.

And also Morgiana's reaction to everything, very understandable. I think it's kind of interesting when you look at it that way - they switch places. It's Alibaba who keeps his head clear, while it's Morgiana who is the horrified one. For the most of this arc it was the other way around. It was Morgiana who wanted to act, and even tried to convince Alibaba to act, while he was too overwhelmed to do anything. But here? It's Alibaba who pleads to her to help him do something.

Also bonus, even the guards are horrified.

And, obviously, for a good reason. Alibaba's putting his life on the line, fully aware that he's doing it, and even accepting that yeah, I might die here. But they have to do this, anyway.

It's one of the reasons why I fucking love him so much. Alibaba feels responsibility very strongly, very personally, even when things really have nothing to do with him. That's just how he is. No, it's not healthy, obviously, but there's something about the fact that in spite of all his insecurities, all the ways the world and even his loved ones made him doubt himself, he's still willing to take an action when there's a need for it. He might struggle, he might get overwhelmed, but he WILL do everything in his power to help.

Too Many Drawing Ideas!!!

Istg every time I sit down and open Procreate with the intention to start refining one of my endless wips, I add a new one instead. Sketched out another 10-page comic now I'm... someone has to stop me, or tell me to sit down and work on one of the many other ideas first XD

Currently, what I've lined up, are some illustrations, some a bit more elaborate than others (almost all are V & Kerry, who would have guessed it):

"Morning Routine", V & Kerry basically just getting ready together in the morning xD

One with the working title "bed pizza", set quite a while after the Sun Ending - a little bit more angsty, but overall hopeful, basically just a small headcanon idea I had

"Phillipines Vacation" - maybe self-explainatory XD

Another small headcanon thing with just V, regarding how the subtitles and instant translator in-game work; basically just an "I would actually like this technology in the real world for reasons xyz" idea

Then a few that are currently just sketches for illustrations, but which I'm tempted to turn into comics:

The only one without Kerry, but instead V and Jackie, a little intermediate scene set right after the ending of the Corpo lifepath intro and before V moves in with Jackie, just adding some personal flavour to it all

Working title "You should have brought bigger towels", set right after Boat Drinks xD would honestly like this just as a single drawing with a little ficlet added, too, but would also love to do it as a short comic bc aaahhh

Aaaand a bunch of longer and shorter comics:

"Charter Hill" - about how V grew up in view of the Dark Matter rooftop lounge and how Kerry reacts when he learns this

"Bandana" - V and Kerry clean out some old stuff and Kerry finds something interesting

"Earring exchange" - a short and simple one that I'd probably do in gif format even, but also a beloved headcanon XD

And another short untitled one that I'm still thinking of changing up a bit in which V deals with some unexpected dysphoria

This is far from all the ideas on my mind atm, but the ones I have sketches for at least... Not sure why I'm posting this, maybe in the hopes that one of these will strike a nerve with someone and you'll help me make a decision on what to get started with XD before I sketch out even more stuff... (for example, a design for V's top surgery "scars" - in quotation marks, bc I have something extremely specific in mind and sth I'd love to make as a mod for him some day xD and so much more stuff it's aaargh öakdöfsdfkdkff)

Secret Admirers Are For The Subtle (A FrankenWolf Fic)

*sitting on the wall like Spider-Man* so basically this idea spawned bc one, I'm obsessed with the idea that Victor draws a lot, even though he only sketched in like one episode lol, and two, I was having a convo with @stardreamer28 about how Victor is the least subtle person in the universe, so why not combine the two into one fic? The gist is that he sent Ruby flowers anonymously so he could drop by the diner and "notice" them and stick around to sketch them, but Ruby is totally onto him and knows he's the one who sent the flowers. Also, the stuff Victor eats/drinks is absolutely just what I was craving when I wrote the fic lol, there's no significance in it. Read on and enjoy!

Victor closed the door to the diner behind him and hung his jacket on the coat rack next to it. He had found in it Gold’s shop, and although it had belonged to him in his old land, had paid the promise of extra attentive medical care in the future, should Gold need it. It was his favorite jacket, or he wouldn’t have bothered: dark brown, made of a thick material for lab work (or cold), and the buttons were all round gold ones.

He noticed a large bouquet of flowers sitting on the counter, the vase conveniently close to his usual stool. He went over and sat down, pulling his sketchbook and a pencil out of his crossbody bag.

“New flowers, huh?” he said conversationally. Ruby, handing another customer a plate of fries, turned towards him and smiled.

“Yeah. Funny thing, but they didn’t come with a note or anything,” she said. “And the delivery girl only knew that they were for me, not who sent them. But they’re beautiful,” Ruby added, smiling wider and brushing her fingertips across the yellow center of a daisy.

“I guess you have a secret admirer,” Victor said, trying to keep himself from turning pink. She liked the flowers.

Ruby laughed, leaning in to sniff an orange flower with lots of small petals that Victor didn’t know the name of. “There’s a first time for everything,” she said. “What do you want to eat?”

He didn’t need a menu; he had been to Granny’s more times than he could count during the Dark Curse, and several times afterwards, too. “Grilled chicken with a side of—”

“Mashed potatoes and gravy?” Apparently Ruby didn’t need him to even finish his order anymore. “And to drink?”

While Victor liked the same foods at Granny’s that Whale had, he didn’t like iced tea, which Whale had ordered with most of his meals. Victor had tried several other beverages since the curse broke, and hadn’t been too enthused with any of them.

“Surprise me,” he said. Ruby grinned, and he was definitely blushing this time. Flustered, he opened his sketchbook and began to outline the prominent yellow rose in the floral arrangement. Those were the easiest.

As the afternoon passed, Victor painstakingly absorbed himself in his drawing. After bringing back Regina’s fiancé with no more success than he’d had with Gerhardt, Victor wanted to do something truly creative, that couldn’t hurt anybody; only sit there on the page and be beautiful. And he’d found himself wanting to be near Ruby since…well, forever, really—even during the curse, there was a certain spark between them—but especially since she had stepped up as Prince Charming’s right hand. She was feisty and strong, and she cared about the town, and Victor dared to hope maybe one day she would care for him.

He downed four glasses of Ruby’s mystery beverage (after all, he had to do something to justify taking up a seat in the diner) before remembering to ask what it was. He had just finished filling in the petals of a small, sort of scrawny-looking daffodil, one of the last flowers he had to color in.

“Hey, Ruby, what is this?” he asked, gesturing towards his empty glass. She had been sitting next to him for a while, since the dinner rush was still a couple of hours away. While he sketched, she read a book of fairytales from the Storybrooke Library—“To see what they got wrong,” as she had explained.

She looked up from the story about Sleeping Beauty. “Canada Dry.”

Victor stared at her. Not just because the light coming through the windows was reflecting off her eyes like gems, but because he was somewhat surprised. “You’re kidding me. This is ginger ale? I should’ve tried this twenty-eight years sooner.” Whale had never been much of a soda drinker; he was too enthused with his iced tea, and ginger ale’s reputation as a beverage of choice for the elderly had made it sound dull. “I should have you pick all my drinks,” he teased.

Ruby laughed. “If it means you come to the diner for your meals, then alright. It’s a deal.” She had been sitting with a stool between them—now, she moved over onto the one directly next to Victor’s. “Can I see what you’ve been so busy with?”

He wasn’t about to show her the small portraits of her that he had been working on; it might come off as creepy, he wasn’t sure. (But she did have the perfect profile for sketching, and he loved capturing her smile when she wasn’t looking.)

The flowers, however, had turned out rather nicely, and there was nothing creepy about those…unless maybe it was that he had sent them as an excuse to spend time with her and she had no idea—but he had been a lot less bold since the Curse ended, and he was nervous about actually asking her out.

“You’re very talented, Victor,” Ruby said softly. The way her eyes lit up looking at the sketches made something in Victor’s core absolutely melt. His fingers itched to pick up the pencil again and draw that ephemeral expression before it faded away.

“Thank you,” he said, impressed with himself for keeping his voice from shaking. She was right there, after all, leaning over his shoulder, the fabric scent of her flannel shirt all he could smell.

Ruby smiled again, brushing her dark hair behind one ear, and hopped off the stool. She went back around the counter as a couple of customers entered the diner, lightly tracing the petals of that bright yellow rose on her way.

Victor checked his watch and began hastily packing away his pencils and his pastel crayons. His shift at the hospital started in twenty minutes.

As his hand was on the doorknob, Ruby called after him. “Hey, Victor?”

He turned around, his heart pounding. “Next time you send flowers, add a note,” she said. Victor couldn't get the grin off his face all the way back to the hospital.

I'm mobile sometimes but I've worked out how to get Xkit Rewritten to work on mobile, so I can cut posts, but I prefer using the app sometimes bc of the minimalism of it (I'll scroll and write posts in the app, save to draft, then cut in the browser, I'll make my own little tut eventually), but I can't be bothered to queue from mobile app so sometimes I might spam post a little. if it gets to like 4-5 posts in a minute I'll just switch over to browser though

I'm here for fun and fun only! I do love a bit of angst but if you wanna go down that route we'll need to do some OOC communication first bc if I'm in the wrong headspace it can bring me down and no one wants that unsolicited (unless that's what your muse is about, then I'll be expecting it you're all good)

IC =/= OOC... most of my muses are not human and sometimes are immortal. the base media (eg Homestuck) is also problematic in ways that I can't avoid. I like to explore the thought processes of things like being on a planet you didn't grow up on, or being immortal when you previously weren't. this is completely fictional, although I do actively try to avoid anything that could be problematic, unless it's realistic, which I will tag OOC
