o i wanted to make a post that im honestly not smart enough to actually sit down and think out but i like the way meryls trauma doesnt completely woobify her character but does still affect her, it just feels nice to see a female charcater not be completely reduced to a wet soggy mess bc of trauma but also not to (very unrealistically) just Get Over It i think trigun has a nice balance and its refreshing
#also not saying its a secret feminist masterpiece or anything (coz ive seen ppl say that and. come on) but i still think it does well-#enough to be given an appreciative nod#i mean its clear nightow didnt know what to do w milly n meryl after a certain point bc there was just. So much goin on w vash and knives#so he just has the girls do some nomad stuff offscreen until he was ready to bring them back in and yknow what i dont hate that#i think its important to note the women in trigun are fucking amazing tho like. rem meryl luida elendira even lina#and yeah millys underdeveloped but still shes so good#so im not gnna sit here and criticise nightow for being just as misogynistic as some other male mangaka bc i think he does very well#and thats not even to say the bar is on the floor like i truly believe that. i love meryl for a reason#but. ppl can we maybe stop w the 'trigun is so feminist' praise bc lets be real nightow probably just has a thing for strong women#98 anime is a little different tho i was pullin some faces while rewatching some clips.#im obvs talking abt the manga#and stampede is still not done so i wont comment too much on that besides the fact i like where its going (girlwise)#i dont usually like viewing manga thru this lense bc its not the same culture and feminism looks different in japan than it does over here#but i saw a chart. it made me twist up my face and go hrrrrnnnmmmmmnnnnmmnnm..... nnhhnnhhjnnn... mmmmmmmm#jesus i didnt mean to go off in these tags i just wanted to make another 'meryl good' post for the pile#ig im still thinkin abt that chart idk i guess it stuck w me (regretfully)#anyway point is i love meryl for a reason trigun women are great thanks nightow but im not gnna praise him for bein a feminist icon

Hi! As someone who now kinda wants to check out Trigun because of the hype, do you recommend that I can start with Stampede? Or do I really need to watch the OG anime first to better understand/enjoy it? Thank you! 🙋🏻‍♀️
you can start with stampede! i'd say knowing the context of the original enhances the experience but isn't necessary to enjoy the show. I would consider stampede more viewer-friendly, especially for those of us who are used to modern storytelling conventions (the original suffers the consequences of general writing trends in anime at the time it was produced and of the fact that it was produced long before the manga was finished, so the story is somewhat disjointed and has a lot of filler which makes it REALLY hard to get into.) if you do end up liking stampede, however, I'd suggest trying out watching at least SOME of the original because it adds a lot of cool nuance and context to the story that stampede tells!
#your only REAL handicap is that you're missing out on references that clue you into the context of the story early on#and quite a few references in the finale. but none of those references are hugely necessary to understand the plot so you should be fine!#i didn't DISLIKE the origial and like i said im glad i watched it first but it was. REALLY hard to get into.#even as someone who understands writing trends & enjoys a lot of older anime trigun is. a product of its time.#there's almost no context given for the story you're witnessing until a good 20 episodes in.#the main villain isn't named at all until halfway through the runtime#and even TWO EPISODES BEFORE THE FINALE i still did not have enough information to fully understand what the hell was going on#vash was going into the final fucking battle and i still didn't know what knives WAS let alone what the fuck he WANTED#not to mention nick was FULLY DEAD and i still didnt know what his deal was. like ok go off king have ur moment bleeding out in the church#but can you EXPLAIN WHATS GOING ON BEFORE YOU SUCCUMB TO THE BLOOD LOSS PLEASEEEEEEEE GOD#stampede does that whole thing WAY better imo. it sprinkles the backstory more naturally throughout the show#again. part of this is 90s writing conventions. but there's only so much i can take fr#it was like comparable to evangelion in terms of LACK OF CONTEXT#anyways. this isnt supposed to be me complaining about the original. it had its moments. i watched 24 episodes of it like it was not BAD#but like. i think the story really benefits from the way that stampede chooses to lay everything out. is what im saying.#tldr watch them in whatever order but if you like stampede try the original#you might not like it more than stampede but you WILL feel cool when you realize how it all relates to stampede#asks#vash is also WAAAAAY sexier in stampede. HOWEVER. the women of the show are like 10 times sexier in the original. so. pick your poison ig

More female protagonists should have bow and arrow's, Allison from Teen Wolf, Katniss from the Hunger Games, Susan from The Chronicles of Narnia, they do it so well! We just need to give all females protagonists bow and arrow's!

I just saw scott pilgrim fanart and anytime anything makes me remember Scott Pilgrim my brain goes into overdrive about how bad the movie was for the story, actually.
Great movie it deserved to be successful but hooooooooly shit they just removed like, every actual part of Scott figuring out his problems and confronting them and trying to be a better person. Scott Pilgrim is one of those top-tier "shitty dudes idolize him for entirely wrong reasons" but unlike Tyler Durden or Tony Montana or whatever it's not that the deconstruction fundamentally fails to target the object of deconstruction, it's literally just what the movie shows.

Apparently the way to make me write about my OCs is to get me distracted while writing explanations for my choices on a survey in the tags.
#Sekhmet kills people#Alesa is unbelievably manipulative#Until recently I probably would have picked 0 bitches for Sekhmet#Because I didn’t actually have plans to give her a girlfriend at any point in the story#Her story isn’t really about that#it’s about trauma and healing and self-love despite a lifetime of pain and adversity#which turns you into a person who you never wanted to be and now you don’t know if you can ever become a person who you wanted to be again#all of which is to say despite the fact that it’s very important that she is attracted to women#and this fact about her is exploited by those around her to make her do things she doesn’t want to do#because she’s desperate for affection and approval#people would naturally deny that she’s lgbt at all because she doesn’t get a girlfriend#and would also say that she’s bad representation because her queerness gets exploited and functions as a character flaw in the narrative#which in the minds of gatekeepers means that she’s obviously straight actually#but I recently realized that a particular plot beat at one point in the story would actually best be resolved with a romance arc for her#so she does get exactly 1 bitch#unfortunately she loses said bitch to the inexorable strings of fate and family which conspire to pull them slowly apart#through no fault of either on their own and simply because in life many things we wish could last are brief#and our first loves are rarely the ones we carry the rest of our lives#but they do kiss before parting ways forever so that’s nice#Later in life Sekhmet gets another long term partner and starts giving free discreet abortions to anyone who needs them#because it turns out human fetal tissue is a powerful spell component but is usually unavailable#because the traditional ways of getting it usually involve ritual sacrifices to dark gods and extremely unsanitary knives#Sekhmet meanwhile completely breaks this limitation by just getting it ethically and consensually#through a simple and safe minimally invasive procedure#offered for free and with no questions asked#except for the normal safety questions of ‘did you tell anyone where you were going’#and ‘do you have any magic items on your person’#and ‘are you secretly carrying a troupe of assassins in a bag of holding to kill me while I’m unawares’#y’know normal witch stuff#what was this post about again?

okay if you're really cool about things, i can be honest with you. before you read further, decide if you're a girl's girl. if you're cool and actually cool or like not cool.
men don't talk in my book because i was fuckken tired of the way they're the center of every fucking story. i was tired of how every story takes a moment to let them talk. men can shut up for literally one fucking book.
unfortunately not everyone is cool. professionally what i usually say is i didn't want to add violence to the world. the only men in my book are abusers, so they don't get to talk. they don't get to take up space. they ruined my life, they don't get to have their words echo anymore.
because like, yeah! you find practically any story about a person surviving trauma and... there's a man at the center. men are often rescuing us from these things. a "good man" is always standing around, being a good man, proving to the victim that good men are the real men. that her experience was unique rather than universal.
the redacted text has not been taken well by all of my early readers. there is this weird, crouching growl that keeps occurring with men-of-a-certain-age. why don't we hear his side of the story?
when i sat down to write everything that happened to me, i couldn't look at the frank brutality of my abuser's words on a page and think to myself: i actually let him speak like that. i had to redact his words from the manuscript. i then left it redacted. no victim is going to read this book and hear the person who hurt them. it is a book for the victims to speak. abusers shut up challenge, forever. for eternity.
my father once told me, chuckling, i should just have a page of redaction where i let the man just finally talk. it is funny to joke about how we should make a whole page in my book about a man that hurt me. this was not the only time someone commented - it feels like you're hiding things. how do i know you're actually a victim if he doesn't get to speak?
there are books where women aren't even present. i even genuinely like some of those books. like, who doesn't like the hobbit?
i keep running into people defending this imaginary man. the default narrative is so true to some people that they will defend any man, just by virtue of the assumption - "if he's acting like that, you had to push him." certain people need definitive proof that you didn't accidentally make your partner into an abuser. they need to decide if you deserved it, because they want to be able to judge you.
which makes sense, i guess, from a hind brain perspective. if you can figure out "why" someone was cruel, you can protect yourself against it. if you defend the bully, the bully might side with you. i don't really know their explanation for feeling this about a character in a book. trust me, i wrote the guy. he is not going to protect you.
i guess i just - there was a time in my life where i desperately wanted anyone to defend me. where i could have really used someone saying holy shit are you okay instead of what did you say to make him act like that to you.
instead, over dinner, a friend-of-a-friend i just met is pouring herself wine. i heard you wrote a book, she says. she gives me the kind of chilly smile i associate with knives. i heard it's unfair to men.

Evil undead being with a mansion full of servants, most of which didn't want to be there. But he's got some kind of power over death and has bound them there, so they can't leave his employ even if they die. They'd just come back.
Naturally this has resulted in an environment where the chores get done, but the servants keep murdering each other. And then doing it again the next day. He's fine with it so long as they clean up the mess.
And he's still not sure if the maids really, really hate each other or if this is some kind of sex thing. They seem to be having a lot of fun, even if they them have to do more work to get the blood out of the carpets.
One day they ask him to perform their wedding. They want to both wear white so it'll show the blood better. Instead of rings, they're giving each other knives. And his last line in officiating their wedding is "you may now kill the bride". (he set it up so that instead of the usual place, they'll resurrect in the honeymoon suite at the local village's best inn.
He's a little unsettled by this. I mean, he may be a necromancer who is more familiar with death than most, but they're taking it a little far. He considers death a business partner, they're jumping into death's arms, and only braking the French kiss to ask for a threesome.
He's decimated nations, raized villages, and torn life from the body of men, women, and children alike... But those maids are doing something they manages to disturb even him. They're just having too much fun with it. Death isn't supposed to be fun, damn it! He's a cackling skull on a vampiric body whose every touch brings the cold silence of the grave, and even he doesn't have THAT much fun with death!
He sips his coffee and shakes his head. The living!
