honestly op I love this and I love thinking about this.

I feel like, even in the case of the latter, sokka would probably keep the malevolent spirit in his boomerang,, the gaang (sans toph, because toph would probably love an evil boomerang) would probably try to convince him, and even then, he's still keeping the damn thing.

like its one of three reasons:

1) scientific study

some part of Sokka's brain is going to want to analyze this evil boomerang. he loves inventions and weapons and the like, and while he hates spirits, he's a science guy through and through. science involves observation. hed probably run a few tests, because seriously, what other chances will he have to experiment on a haunted boomerang. If it's haunting him, he's going to know everything about it.

2) spite

sokka is like. unbelievably stubborn at times. (honestly, the entirety of the gaang is. they're children, and children are the most stubborn beings on the planet.) boomerang is his most beloved weapon. he's not going to let some evil spirit have its way! this probably ends with a lot of one-sided screaming matches with said spirit.

and finally,

3) sheer denial

"no," sokka says, "spirits cannot haunt you with a boomerang." besides, why would an evil spirit have a grudge on handsome, smart, amazing funny guy sokka? everyone loves him. even evil spirits. so there is no possible way he's being haunted via boomerang (he thinks, as his boomerang hits him in the back of the head during training). though honestly, the denial route somehow has the highest chance of him befriending the evil boomerang, as sokka is shockingly likable once he gets past being and an ignorant dumbass about any given topic.

I just found out about tulpas and my first thought was remembering how Sokka from atla loved his Boomerang and kept angering spirits, so what about Boomerang getting possessed?

If it's a benevolent spirit it can be canon compliant (very funny way of explaining how Boomerang always came back).

If malevolent, just imagine if Aang one day wakes up and is like "something is wrong" and then they have to exorcize Boomerang, to Sokka's heartbreak.
