Sokka's Master (Season 3 episode 4) has got to be one of my favorite episodes.

It shows how even though everyone looks up to Sokka as the adult/big brother of the Gaang, Sokka is still a kid.

He tried very hard with every task he was giving to seem like he was mature, for example, when he had to sign his name.

He tried to do it normally, but he couldn't and wanted to be true to himself.

So he did it the more, I guess sillier way.

One part everyone talks about is the scen where he had to paint the scenery he saw.

He looks so proud of what he painted, and he saw it how he saw fit. He had to do it from memory.

Piandao looks very, how do I put it? Judgemental of Sokka putting a rainbow. So he asked "You put a rainbow?"

Sokka looks back at his painting and relises "Oh, a rainbow wasn't there"

So he asks, "Is that okay?"

You can tell from Sokka's eyes, that he values Piandao's opinion, he doesn't want to disappoint him.

That's why at the end, he (not word for word, I got a shit memory) says, "I haven't been telling the truth."

Every man in Sokka's village left when he was 13. Many can say "well, he had a father figure most of his life" and that, i say be quite.

Sokka may be the oldest of the group (at this point), but he's still a kid. He doesn't want to disappoint someone, who even though he just met, who he looks up to.

I'm taking personal experience here. I met a teacher and after a few days I really looked up to her and wanted to make her proud. She was like a mother to me and even though I had my actual mom with me, sometimes I felt my mom wasn't helping that much. So my teacher I wanted to make her proud.

That's what was going on with Sokka. He wanted to make Piandao proud, so even if that meant showing he was lying, he didn't want to lie.

This one was all over the fucking place, I might redo this one. I'm tired as hell.

I just found out about tulpas and my first thought was remembering how Sokka from atla loved his Boomerang and kept angering spirits, so what about Boomerang getting possessed?

If it's a benevolent spirit it can be canon compliant (very funny way of explaining how Boomerang always came back).

If malevolent, just imagine if Aang one day wakes up and is like "something is wrong" and then they have to exorcize Boomerang, to Sokka's heartbreak.

So we've established that Zuko just didn't know that Aang was trapped in an iceberg for 100 years and was understandably confused as to how the Avatar is a 12yr old little shit straight from the airtemples and also just never asked anyone bc he didn't want to be rude, right? Yea here's a follow up to that:

Zuko: hey so how long had aang even been hiding out at your village?

Sokka: pardon?

Zuko: before i came in and kinda destroyed the whole place, sorryaboutthatbytheway, how long was he there, like when did he come to you guys?

Sokka: oh he didn't come to us, and katara and i had only found him like a day earlier so

Zuko: you-? you found him?

Sokka: yea

Zuko: what do you mean you just found him?

Sokka: well we got lost on a hunting trip and katara got mad at me and yelled and y'know how when katara yells weird stuff happens like ice starts forming and breaking and stuff? Yea she kinda broke an iceberg and aang happened to be in there

Zuko: you're telling me that you found the avatar

Zuko: after 100 years of him disappearing and the most expert navigators and detectives trying to find him and failing

Zuko: after generations of firelords before hired every hitman they could get and all of them returning empty handed

Zuko: after 3 years of me searching every desolate corner of the world desperately trying to prove myself and losing sleep over it

Zuko: and you did it by accident???

Sokka: pretty much

sokkas character makes me laugh so much becuz, on obe hand, he’s “the plan guy”, and definitely smart. he invents things, and mostly keeps them all out of danger. but on the other hand…

he ends up in situations like this 😭

Some Zukka Canon Divergence Fic Recs !

I'm a little bit insane about zukka canon divergence so here are some that I really enjoyed! All of these are on ao3 :)

Boomerangs and Rainbows by Mindbending, Rated T, 67,555 words, Graphic Depictions of Violence, Major Character Death: One of my favorite Zukka canon divergence fics ever! Zuko dies at the North Pole and ends up haunting Sokka as a ghost. I am in love with how this author showed their developing relationship and trust in each other and it's just !! such a great plot, writing style, execution, and character writing.

Blue by bealeciphers, Rated T, 192,682 words, Graphic Depictions of Violence: Ba Sing Se + Blue Spirit zukka canon divergence 👀 A lot of crazy identity shenanigans with this one. This is Zuko pov so it has a lot of focus on Zuko's inner struggle, character arc, identity, and emotions and I think the author did really well! I really enjoyed reading this and seeing the,,,complicated identity concealment zukka going on here that led to some excellent conflict and complicated falling in love!

Operation Leverage by snowandfire, Rated T, 50,723 words, No Archive Warnings Apply: From Ba Sing Se onwards! Zukka fake dating au as Sokka forces Zuko to tell him stuff about fire nation culture :D I liked seeing them get closer! Enemies to friends to lovers my beloved

Leaving it All Behind by Sreeder, Rated M, 259,815 words, Implied/Referenced Rape/Non-Con, Past Child Abuse, Torture, Nudity, Panic Attacks, Implied/Referenced Sexual Assault: This one is for those of you who like reading the dark stuff. I am someone who mostly likes to read more lighthearted things but I read this fic on recommendation and wow is it well-written! Sokka is captured during the siege on the Northern Water Tribe and sent to Zhao's prison camp. He runs into Zuko, and they eventually start working to escape together and get closer in the process. Very slowburn, very intense and dark, graphic depictions of torture and death. This has a completed sequel that continues their journey as well as a third book currently in the works!

I'm Not Angry Anymore by team_avatars_eyebags, Rated T, 69,430 words, No Archive Warnings Apply: Alternate universe where Zuko and Iroh have been peacefully living on Kyoshi Island with secret identities for a good chunk of Zuko's banishment and then the gaang shows up and throw Zuko's entire semblance of peace and contentment out the window! This whole fic is technically pre-slash but I liked the concept and story too much to not include it here lol

boys are more trouble than they're worth by lesbianspikespiegel, Rated T, 11,128 words, No Archive Warnings Apply: Some nice pretty fluffy and humorous Ba Sing Se Zukka! Getting to know each other, getting together, and the struggle of scrambling to hide your secret relationship from your friend group. Overall a very light-hearted and funny fic :D
