gwen and merlin have the same taste in men (merlin jokes about their abysmal taste and gwen shoots back that she used to have a crush on him and he’s just like “yeah. exactly. horrible taste”). they both liked lancelot but merlin got him first (they definitely slept together. at least once. tell me i’m wrong.) and gwen was happy for them but she also liked him but was mainly happy. then they broke it off and lancelot left and gwen was like “damn, i’m sorry…anyways how was he in bed?” and merlin goes from :( to >:) and tells her everything.

they both like arthur but arthur courts gwen first. merlin is happy for them but he also loves liked him but he’s mainly happy. then they don’t work out and merlin is APPALLED. gwen is just like “i really love lancelot and arthur really loves you so this works out” and then goes and makes out with lancelot. merlin doesn’t even get the chance to ask how arthur is in bed :( but then arthur comes to him and confesses and merlin is able to know first hand what he’s like in the sack sooo a win is a win

With none of this should they be so bold, only Merlin is treacherous in love. In broad midday, Lancelot hides them—badly—and kisses Merlin until he’s giddied with being known. He whispers,

The others don’t see; Lancelot slips the clasps of proper-reputation frequent as Merlin, defter than Gwaine. Forget secret courtship—for this alcove, Merlin would do magic worth a thousand pyres.

Lips on throat, thumb tracing cheek. Everything is tingling sweet like drinking fresh spring melt.

“I’ll be there,” Merlin snickers, and tips his head forward, muffling his joy and face-aching grin into Lancelot’s gambeson.

thinking about how it's almost worse that the true lancelot thanked merlin at the end of 4x09 because instead of having some comfort in thinking that the shade was only the image of lancelot, merlin has to live with the knowledge that his lancelot was there the entire time, locked away, and he did nothing to help him until it was too late

I’m making my friend watch Merlin so he can understand what I’m talking about when I’m rambling about it.

He got to “how long have you been training to be a pratt, my lord?” And was already complaining that Merlin and Arthur need to hurry up and get together.

We’re on the second episode and I’m realising i may have made a small error in judgement.

He doesn’t know Arthur dies at the end and I’m delusional enough about this show that he might possibly think merthur and mercelot are canon at different times.

He also thinks Morgwen is canon and I just headcanon it as a qpr, not that I headcanon the ship itself.

He’s gonna be so pissed.

Half of me wants to tell him so he doesn’t get the same shock I did when Arthur and Gwen get together, the other half doesn’t want him to have any spoilers and also thinks it’ll be funny to see how long it takes him to realise.

In my defence, the show was made in 2008 in the Uk, that should say enough about them having anything remotely gay in the show.

He’s still gonna be heartbroken when he gets to the finale.

Let me hit you with my Shade!Lancelot idea, keeping in mind I haven't seen that episode of Merlin yet. (This works for both established Arwen/established Merthur and Gwencelot/Mercelot in my mind so think of it whichever way you'd like but it does focus on Lancelot, Merlin, and Arthur.)

So! Morgana creates Shade!Lancelot using Lancelot's body and sends him back to Camelot to stir up trouble. Instead of trying to just break up Arthur and Gwen, he's meant to isolate Arthur and make him believe that he can't trust anyone except for Aggravaine.

So he flirts with Gwen, takes the knights out to have fun when they should be training/distracts them, and takes Merlin's attention away from Arthur as well, frustrating Arthur.

S!Lancelot and Aggravaine both place doubts in Arthur's mind directly as well and S!Lancelot realizes that Merlin betraying Arthur would be far worse than anyone else and sets his sights on Merlin instead.

So he keeps stealing Merlin away when Arthur needs him, makes comments about how he knows Merlin better than Arthur ever could and about how he knows Merlin sneaks away but he's loyal to Merlin over Camelot (which also upsets Arthur because that's one of his knights for god's sake!) and won't tell him where Merlin is going.

Arthur confronts Merlin about his sneaking away (magic things) and, when he refuses to tell the truth, Arthur thinks he can't trust him after all.

Merlin talks about having magic in front of S!Lancelot and, when he doesn't know what Merlin's talking about, Merlin becomes suspicious. He references something that didn't happen and S!Lancelot acts like he remembers that which confirms his suspicions but when he tries to sidle away out of the room to tell someone, S!Lancelot attacks him, attempting to choke him out.

Arthur finds them like this and S!Lancelot says that Merlin was sending information to Morgana so he had to subdue him which Arthur doesn't believe for ONE SINGLE MINUTE. Thus, they begin to duel as Merlin tries to recover his breathing and stop from passing out in the corner.

S!Lancelot attempts to kill Arthur and knocks him out, Arthur fading out with the last thing he sees being Merlin trying to push S!Lancelot's killing blow away as his servant stands.

Somehow (I'm thinking earlier in the ep Merlin finds a magical crystal that can hold souls released from the afterlife that Gaius is researching and Lancelot's real soul gets released during the ep and the crystal glows and maybe gets broken in the scuffle) Merlin pushes the Shade from Lancelot's body and his real soul is able to return to his body.

The Shade's form changes into a kind of Shadow Monster Lancelot and duels the real Lancelot now (who is very shaken and weak because he was just revived!) and, when he stabs the Shade, it does no damage. The Shade laughs and says that he can't be killed without magic and Lancelot says that then he'll just have to kill it like he killed the Griffin.

"You're a knight of Camelot and you're saying that you used magic to kill a Griffin?"

"No. I did." Merlin says, casting the same spell he did all those years ago on Lancelot's blade as he stabs through the Shade, killing it.

There's a beat where Merlin still isn't sure if it's the real Lancelot and asks him something only the real Lancelot would know, which he answers and they have a tearful/huggy reunion.

Arthur wakes up and they explain that it was a creature sent by Morgana and Lancelot is actually back with them now.

Later, when Merlin is getting Arthur ready for bed, Arthur tells him that he doesn't need to know where he goes off to because he trusts him. Merlin goes to tell him the truth but stops and thanks him instead, snuffing out the candles and shutting the door as he leaves.

(I want to hopefully write this one day but I will need to actually catch up and watch the episode first to get the vibes. Everything I know about it rn is from clips and gifs and such)

what’s your favorite merlin ep from each season?

Ooh yay, good question! I don't have these already picked out so I will be giving it a think!

Season 1: I'm gonna have to go with the Moment of Truth. Thought I was gonna go with the Poisoned Chalice, but then I saw MoT on the list and realized it had to be that. There's just so much good in it. It does such a wonderful job of establishing how at home Merlin has become in Camelot, all his friends come to help him, Gwen and Morgana are awesome 😍 And of course all the Merthur stuff. When Arthur asks if Merlin has found a place where he fits in? 😭 Hunith absolutely shipping them? But what really tips this one over the edge for me is Will. I love him so much. He's such a good character, even though he's only in one episode. He's Merlin's best friend!!!! I have put a lot of thought and fanfic into what they must have been like together in Ealdor. Merlin being in the middle of the conflict between Arthur and Will.......... Ugh I could go on but this is already long 😅 And Dr. Bashir as Kanen is always fun 🤣

Season 2: The Last Dragonlord. My favorite episode of the whole series. I love Balinor sooooooooo much. He is just so. How do I put this into words? He's so harsh when we first meet him, but he is willing to help. There's a gentleness to him that has been hardened by years of intense persecution and grief. He's the last of his kind, just like Kilgharrah 😭 He's so lonely and expects nothing from Merlin, but then..........KASJDFIHALKSJAJD;LJAKJSDASJFDSK. Him and Merlin! All their scenes are so good!!!!! When Merlin says "We could be happy," my heart is destroyed. They got no time with each other!!!!! He would have been so good for Merlin!!!! And the little dragon he whittles for Merlin?? 😭😭😭 I am not okay. AND DON'T EVEN GET ME STARTED ON HUNITH AND BALINOR. ROMANCE OF ALL TIME. Tolkien level love story. But so tragic. Again, I have spent a lot of time and fanfic thinking about what could have been.

Season 3: The Coming of Arthur, part 2 if I have to pick. One word: Mercelot. Merlin with the sword and Lancelot there and Merlin showing off 😭😭😭 THEM. lakjdlkajlkdjskfasjlkdslkjsalkja. It's also a really good episode and so cool to see the round table and everybody becoming knights. One of the episodes of all time. Honorary mention to The Sorcerer's Shadow. Merlin and Gilli have such an interesting dynamic.

Season 4: Some personal favorites in this season, but I gotta go with The Secret Sharer. Everybody is WORKING in this episode. Agravaine has finally gone too far and it almost breaks Merlin and Arthur 😭 Ugh that scene in the council chambers. "He would not have left without saying goodbye to me." Just kill me now. And then way Gwen is there to check on Merlin 😭 And then Gwaine! GWAINE!!!! A great Merwaine episode. He got bored of playing soldiers! He's really just here for Merlin!! The way Merlin is so dismissive of him at first! But then he helps him and the deleted scene!! And then of course all the Emrys stuff with the Catha is so cool. I'm a bit of a Gaius hater, but I love his relationship with Merlin and it's so strong and good in this one. And then what Gaius says to Arthur at the end 🥲 I'm fine.

Season 5: The Diamond of the Day, part 2. I feel like I don't really need to explain this one? You get it.

The scene he had just witnessed made Gwaine happy for his friends, but he would have preferred it if snogging was the only reason for Merlin and Lancelot sneaking off together.

Hello! We do intend to run this event again this year, though I (mod rainbowvamp) am a little out of touch with the goings on in the Merlin world atm, currently encompassed in another hyper-fixation as I am.

But! The mercelot brain worms will never leave me, and I would love to add to some of my mercelot WIPs and see some fun new content from other lovely people. No dates are set, and we may need to add another mod, but the plan is in place.

saw your mergwaincelot event and it sounds so fun but I'm so new to the pairing that I'm really afraid of how to characterise them all and make sure it's not ooc :( do you have any advice? Any key components you think make up each character to keep in mind?

hello anon!! My first piece advice would be not to let the fear of writing them ooc prevent you from writing them at all -- the more you write them, the more familiar you'll likely become with their characters. And, if you're still unconvinced, slapping an au tag on it can do wonders for the crippling doubts of not fitting with canon.

My second piece of advice would be to read the content that's already out there. With Merwaincelot, that's not a great deal, but the beauty of the poly ship is having the separate branches (Merwaine, Mercelot, Gwaincelot) that will work for this too. When you read them, chances are that you'll have a very visceral reaction if you feel like they're ooc, plus more exposure never hurts.

In terms of key components, though, I'd probably say the following (and if anyone else has any other points, please jump on and this is by no means exhaustive):

Gwaine and his abandonment issues. Canonically convinced people get sick of him, some things definitely went down with his sister, finds it difficult to believe that he can be loved so dearly. A bit of a hothead and will launch himself into a fight without needing much convincing. Can use humour to deflect his true feelings. Also fiercely loyal to those he loves and values them more than his own life.

Lancelot and HIDING INJURIES like come on. Doesn't want to inconvenience anyone ever and that really can cause problems further down the line. Definitely more chaotic than he gets credit for (man saw Merlin smile and committed identity fraud) and always sees the best in people and always wants to help. Will not instigate the fight but will gladly support if needed. Also fiercely loyal to those he loves and values them more than his own life.

Merlin very much depends on where in canon you're writing. Personally, I tend to ignore the last season when writing for this ship so Merlin is usually brimming with kindness. Can be a little shit and will weaponise his magic to achieve such ends. Will try and help in any way he can if someone asks for it or if he can tell they need it. He's generally not afraid to say what he thinks, particularly if he gets asked for his opinion on something (as an example, his 'I think you're mad, I think you're all mad' speech to Arthur when he's asked about what he thinks to the marriage between Arthur and Elena -- though the speech does come after Merlin initially said it wasn't his place to say). Dry wit. Also fiercely loyal to those he loves and values them more than his own life.
