this is all just my personal view ofc, and i have been known to be wrong about things but, looking for a merwaincelot fic that gets their dynamic right is like searching for a needle in a haystack 😭😭😭 why does no one get them like i do?? being so incredibly intelligent is lonely fr :/ gwaine and lance trying to seduce merlin to join their relationship or have a threesome with them is incorrect. i am deeply sorry. the positions are the wrong way around. gwaine and merlin are far more likely to be fwb or dating (in a way that involves sex) than gwaine and lance 😶 merlin is not a shy, oblivious little bby - he's an unhinged feral wilddeoren (rat) boy - but you know who is??? lance! they try their hardest to seduce him and he either doesn't notice or thinks there's no way they'd flirt with him and he must be mistaken so he ignores it. merlin and gwaine are dropping terribly unsubtle hints that they both like him romantically left and right, but the man manages to misread them somehow. lance is repressed and shy and has cripplingly low self-esteem and merlin and gwaine would eat him alive, sorry :/ he would be the shy one being backed into a corner unexpectedly by two men with nefarious motives, not merlin! he is utterly unaware of how attractive he is bc he hates himself. to be fair, merlin kinda hates himself too, as does gwaine, but not in the same way. they're a sad trio okay but lance is pathetic and a subby little bitch and would never initiate i don't make the rules

Gwaine has been rescuing Merlin since the first(like lance), and dropping everything to help Merlin help a man he personally holds no loyalty towards, visibly showing more loyalty to Merlin than the crown prince

Then, all the boys are back in town to help Arthur because MERLIN called on them, and we're just told a year passes behind the curtains

We're given a few cherry picked moments in the first episode where we see Merlin and Lance's sort of comfort with each other, and Merlin with Gwaine (and Percy) and their familiarity as well (awwww they like making Merlin smile) Even still, it's clear in the weak attempts at reminding the audience of Gwaine's presence that he felt inadequate to the unspoken-but-definitely-there trust between Merlin and Lance, fueling his desperate desire to be there for him after his death when Merlin is very obviously struggling with everything (including Gaius' disappearance and his and arthur's falling out)

Summary: Now safe in Camelot, Gwaine, Lancelot and Merlin struggle to forget the events of Fyrien. As they navigate open wounds and emotional scars, they try to rebuild themselves.

Opening:

Lancelot was the one who noticed that Gwaine had developed a fever. Gwaine had dismissed the sweating as a result of the nightmares that had returned after Fyrien, the shortness of breath as a consequence of reliving every moment that he’d been tied to a rock in the ocean. And he’d been trying to eat, trying to keep hydrated, since being moved from Merlin’s room into their shared chambers. He’d been trying so hard to recover, to lessen the strain on Merlin and Lancelot, but when Lancelot had refused to leave him for even a moment it had become apparent that Gwaine was not getting any better.

Merlin, after resting for two days, had returned to his duties and Lancelot, unable to train with his arm in a sling, had chosen to stay with Gwaine. He’d barely spoken since returning – had done little but sleep and curl up against Lancelot in the hours before dawn, his face streaked with tears – and both of his partners had been concerned about what thoughts would trickle into his mind if he was left alone. It was on the third day after their return that Lancelot realised Gwaine was significantly warmer than he ought to have been.
