After being on Tumblr for I think nearly a year, and making a fuck ton of posts and gaining mild popularity on certain posts and gaining a whopping 21 followers, I've never made a Hinata Harem post. So yall are finally lucky enough to hear my takes on it ❤️❤️❤️

So first of all, I kinda love the hinata harem thing bc it's actually so funny, but strangely, in a way, it's realistic. Not very well written most of the time, but realistic as a concept.

Bc like he gets along with basically the entire cast, and he sometimes compliments characters who are not used to being complimented, and that character may blush of embarrassment, and then the fandom takes that as shipping material, like with Goshihina. And it makes sense! Imagine you're rarely complimented, and you strive for validation from your peers, especially upperclassmen, and then suddenly, the cutest boy you've ever seen compliments you like you're the only person on the planet. And so then you purposely try as hard as you possibly can to make said boy continue to compliment you. Take this, then multiply it by 100, because I think that's how the harem trope, in Hinata's case, works.

This isn't meant to be in the way that he can be shipped with every single character because truly, he can't. Shipping Hinata with 3rd years, in a typical high school setting, is, at least imo (and not bc of the age gap itself), weird bc of the maturity difference. You shouldn't date a senior as a freshman bc you're on two separate maturity levels. And regarding all of the many 3rd years (tendou, daichi, suga, bokuto, etc), it's really the same exact thing just platonically. Bokuto is literally Hinata's older brother!! He adopted him as a student *and* sibling, bc he felt the same things everybody does, just in a *different* way.

The hinata harem, to me, is the display of hinata's character in reference to every other character, yk? To me, these select few people are actually in love with him, and these people have a "crush," which is more so a platonic feeling, and these people find a true, deep *friendship* with him, one that they've probably never experienced before, and therefore may look like a crush or love to an outside viewer. And, in these different relationships between hinata and other characters, they all love him. They all feel a loving connection with him, like how people would think in a harem, but it's not quite so because all of the people who love hinata love him in different ways.

Now, with how this harem is portrayed in fanfiction actually scares me bc half the people there are much older and mature than him (gen question why do ppl ship him with 3rd years /in high school/, like, I love Brazil Oihina sooooo much but hs Oihina is 😧😧😧) , and tbh it just gets out of control.

And alot of times I see Hinata reciprocate?? With multiple people?? Which is fine to an extent, imo like I love poly ships, I've seen a lot of really cute ones and some more interesting ones, and it's totally normal to have a crush on a few people at once but istg some people make him a goddamn player,,,

I recently read a harem-ish fic, which was much more similar to how I personally find it to be like, it was essentially people having a crush on hinata, or realizing it, and it was cute, but at the same time, Hinata asked one of them on a date, cuddled with like two other guys (which, normalize cuddling platonically but in the context of the fic it wasn't suuuuper platonic but wasn't suuuuuper romantic either iykwim), and the part of that that kinda icked me was just that he was getting on with so many people at once (the fic took place in the span of like a week, and there were like 5 people i think??). And a lot of other fics that are post time skip are just Hinata hooking up with the entire cast at some point???

Idk tbh but I do really like fics where everybody LOVES hinata, but only a few people are IN love with him. Just the balance of like ~5 people having a crush on him, half of the rest of them have adopted him in one way or another, and the other half have just found their new bff.

This is more of a simple question, but which ones are your favorite characters and relationships on the show? Doesn't need to be romantic and it can be favorite in the sense of personality, acting, writing, how they move the story... Whatever reasoning, really. It's rly hard to pick a favorite tbh.

I think rn and maybe forever, examining Claudia's relationships and life could fill books. She's often overlooked and she's even more overlooked now for being black, but she's the most tragic figure of them all. If u add in the fandom's reactions to her (which reflect society's reactions) then it's worse. Her pain and strength is never given any real respect. She's sidelined for the adult men in her life all the time by ppl here too. Her character has always been doomed and tragic but the show rly added a lot to it and a lot of ppl dismiss it and don't care. That fucks me up. They'll applaud Madeleine or Lestat for "surviving," and I'm sure they'll be praising Gabrielle soon too. But what about Claudia? Everything she does is seen as some evil scheming now, but when she was a white girl, nobody was saying that shit. Anyway, let me not get into all this, u already know.

I also am still not over 2x5. I luv when relationships are explored in contained spaces and everything feels claustrophobic. Watching Louis, Daniel, and Armand move around each other and all their histories....I have not recovered. That was incredible. Armand and Louis shouting their pasts to each other in mocking ways while Daniel is slumped against the wall, jfc. Daniel in Dubai in current day, trying to drown out their arguments.

I am also interested in seeing how Lestat is going to be portrayed and where they're going with him and Louis, how they might explore their mutual grief over Claudia and work out their issues. Where Armand will fit in here too. A lot of everyone hurting each other and we've barely scratched the surface of them on the other side of that yet. I know 2x8 is about to get explosive on some of it. I'm ready but not ready lol.

And I really liked the way the anime portrayed Giyuu and Sabito's relationship personally. I think it did a good job of showing how close they were and how much they meant to each other, even with such limited screen time, as well as why Sabito's death had such a lasting and profound effect on Giyuu (esp when compounded with his sister's death)

As far as romance or friendship, canonically, it was a very close friendship. Not that I am big on "um, they didn't have feelings in canon so it's not valid to ship them" (obviously haha), just that I definitely don't think there was any hinted or implied romantic feelings on purpose in canon. I'm only specifying that because based on your phrasing I assume you mean how I feel about them canonically? Unless I'm misinterpreting

That being said, I do "ship" them! My personal headcanon for them is them being queerplatonic, so not friendship or romance. So yeah, I ship them in a qpr, which I have a lot of thoughts on, but I won't get into too much detail here (always down to share more complex thoughts or headcanons about that though if anyone wants them). So I guess to answer your question, I don't see it as romantic, nor a very close friendship between them, but something else entirely

As far as the last part of your question, yeah, I do see a lot of difference between sabigyuu and sane//giyuu personally. I see Sabito get compared to Sanemi a lot which I... don't really get to be quite honest. We don't see a ton of Sabito, but imo he doesn't have a similar personality to Sanemi at all, nor really even similar convictions. I also see a lot of people compare them in looks, and while they both have purple eyes and Sabito does have a face scar, that's about... all the similarities I see? Which, to me, doesn't feel like nearly enough for all the "comparisons" I see at the volume I see, and how hard some people try to stress them. Tbh it honestly just feels like a fanon thing of people trying to shoehorn that Giyuu has a "type" that Sabito and Sanemi fall into, but to me that kinda just ends up as feeling like a shallow viewing of both Sabito and Sanemi's characters, as well as Giyuu's relationship to both of them. Feels like a case of sanding away the interesting aspects of characters to push a "ship dynamic" ppl want rather than what actually makes sense for the characters. Very much an aspect of fandom and shipping culture I'm not a super big fan of

Beyond that.... I'm just not really a sane//giyuu shipper in general. I get why people ship them, it's just not my thing. The dynamic between Giyuu and Sanemi just really isn't one I'm a fan of personally, so I like to avoid it. The whole "we're on the same side but are hostile towards one another and need to learn to get over" or "rivals" thing is just... ah... a bit boring to me, to put it lightly, and people tend to get so obsessive with that dynamic and the tropes surrounding it that most fan content is far too ooc for me to enjoy

That being said, I can find sane/giyuu kinda interesting in a canon compliant, post-canon sense, wherein with them being the two survivors with very little to live for in their eyes end up developing an almost unhealthy attachment to each other because of a "no one else will understand what we went through" mindset. However, even then I'm not quite too sure how I feel about that being in a romantic sense or not, and is rarely what I see explored in fics with them

Sorry, I don't really mean to slam the ship, and that's not my intention. I've just had a few interactions where people have assumed I really like the ship because I really like Sanemi and it's the most popular ship involving him, so I like to clearly explain why it's not to my taste. Obviously this isn't to say no one else can like it, I'm very much a ship and let ship person, but it's not one I enjoy interacting with, and quite honestly try to avoid

So yeah. I personally don't see a whole lot of similarities between sane//giyuu and sabigiyuu haha

I think what has always bugged me deep down abt Electra and Greaseball as a ship is that when people put them together romantically they more often than not play up GB's masculinity and then play up Electra’s femininity. Now ofc Electra can be feminine and should be portrayed so at times seeing as he is genderfluid, but when ppl pair him with Greaseball who is already a very stereotypically masculine character, they tend to usually play more into Electra’s feminine traits in a way that it doesn't feel like genuine portrayal.

so if youve been around on my blog long, its probably p obvious that deathstar / kidstar is my fav SE ship gjsjflsj i just have. so many feelings about it,,,,,, like they are foils for one another. they hold so much respect for each other (kid sees blackstar's drive and determination and feels inspired by his passion, while blackstar recognizes kid being a god and appreciates his powers and abilities) and while i agree to some extent that they would have a "you idiot" "but im your idiot" type of relationship, i dont think kid would be quite as annoyed / irritated with him as some people portray them. there would absolutely be things about blackstar that gets under kid's skin, but it would be a lot more silly or trivial than people believe. and blackstar is a lot more compassionate and thoughtful than people realize i think, too; if he thought he was genuinely upsetting kid (or anyone really) i think he'd chill.

there are times when he goes too far (like while he was arguing with maka when they were trying to resonate souls) but he's more perceptive than ppl give him credit for imo. uhm but as for struggles when becoming a couple, ive seen a lot of different takes on this and i like p much all of them and i think it could go a number of ways, but i really like the idea of blackstar being adamant to make it work and kid having deep reservations (being immortal while blackstar will age, all of kid's responsibilities, feeling that blackstar could and should be with someone else, etc.) but blackstar would be like "kid. you like me, and i like you. isn't that enough?" for domestic cuteness, i love the idea of kid showing off (intentionally or not, be it fighting, training, skateboarding, playing music, or surprising star with a random skill he has from being lord death's son and growing up virtually alone as a demigod) and blackstar hanging slack jawed in awe and going from "i have to kill this guy he's too cool" to "im blushing so hard i have to kiss him right now only the most awesome dude can date the biggest star". they are both enraptured by the other and soulmates and in love and and and i rambled a lot but i could ramble more they make me so normal.

y'all already know how feral i am over dtk so this goes out to him, too. i think this boy can also play the piano (something he and soul have bonded over) and he can also waltz and slow dance. his father had him taught at a young age since he’s probably attended galas and such (once yk ppl were allowed to know he existed or w/e). in terms of music, soul can play just abt anything; brass instruments, the clarinet, guitar. i think blackstar would kill on the drums. maka can play the guitar too, i think. tsubaki can play the flute.

This again made me realise how sometimes shippers just don't have the bigger picture in their mind you know. if i have to take jkk's example then we see them mostly with members so we usually just can compare how they behave with e/o to other members but there's soo many ppl outside that which we don't see so we don't have any idea how they treat other ppl. E.g. when those pictures of jk with mijoo were leaked it again caused havoc in Fandom cause ppl thought him back hugging is too much for friendship or what not. Armys for yrs has portrayed as jk hates woman when reality says otherwise.

We think jm treats jk in a certain way or vice versa when off cam there might be other people whom they treat more differently than that. I always think jungkook treats jm as his close frnds and jm does the same. When ppl were making big deal out of that jk bucking up at jm over sausage many said alot of things about jk when it's actually very normal in friends. I still don't think that's something jk would do to his actual partner but that's just my thoughts. People said jk not knowing jm's schedules nd not even going to any of jm's music shows despite being free ain't a big deal it happens in couples when i feel jk would be the first person to support when he's partner doing some projects as solo(if we assume jk is dating another artist).

Do i think jkk are close? Yes. Do i think they're more than friends? Yes. Do i think they flirt? Yes. Do i think they feel attraction towards one another? Maybe. Do i think they're dating? No. There are some rs that go beyond just friendship but it stops right before crossing the line between friends and romantic rs. I feel jkk's rs is there somewhere.

I’m not exactly 100% on what you’re comparing, because Mile and Apo were shipped, but not because of how much time they actually spent together. They were shipped for the same reasons as many BL actors, which is because they starred in a production together, and have major chemistry.

What added to the shipping is them having history outside the show, seeing as they went to the same college and crossed paths enough times, but weren’t friends. Then Mile talked about how he always thought Apo was good looking, back when Apo came up as an actor. And Apo thought Mile was handsome from when he saw him in their college gym working out. On top of that, Mike basically created the production company Kinnporsche was released under, because he wanted Apo to have the opportunity to shine. So they are or were really good friends, and Apo teased Mile a lot about being his sugar daddy because Mile is really rich, as he grew up in a wealthy business family. But outside of extremely specific lines, shipping them wasn’t because of how they acted around each other, because they spent a lot of time together, or because they appeared to want to be together.

So all that said, while people obviously shipped and still ship them, they aren’t really comparable to JM and JK, because Jimin and Jungkook aren’t being shipped just for being friends and coworkers during one project. They have a decade of history and are very questionable together, and as AYS shows, they were intentional about making time to spend together. Mile and Apo flirt and have fun, and are also private about their friendship for the most part, but anyone shipping them beyond the “I think they’d look good together.” we’re doing so knowing they likely weren’t a couple. Their chemistry is real, and I definitely thought they would remain visibly close as friends, but things change. Also, Mile is apparently dating a woman he has been rumored to have gotten with like two years ago, when he and Apo were still visibly close. So again, people were shipping knowing they weren’t together.

Yes, Jimin and Jungkook’s friendship might change after enlistment as well, we don’t know, but the context and circumstances are very different.

Yes, I was also intrigued when I saw how op was working on a ShouheixYata fic! Like I know some bits and pieces of how they’d interact as friends, but as romantic partners? I’ve seen some EricxYata and and ChitosexYata, but never a ShouheixYata. I’m sooo curious cause Yata is terribly shy when it comes to romance, while Shouhei is charismatic and nicer than the other abc boys. Like is Shouhei going to be all flirty and try to charm him?? Does Yata develop a crush on Shouhei which he tries to hide but miserably fails at it??

And I do!! So to start off, I’ll be honest and say that I’m not really fond of romantic!banshou. Its weird cause i have other ships with similar dynamics, and i also adore both characters individually, but im not the biggest fan of them as a ship. I think its probably bc i dont like how its portrayed by the very few fans they have, and how a lot of things about shouhei, end up revolving around bandou’s inferiority complex towards him (which really sucks as a shouhei’s girl who wants to learn more about him).

But despite being in my y/n feels for shouhei, i do have a few ships for him! I don’t think it’s as obvious as it was when i first created this blog, but shouhei/eric is the closest to an otp i have for this fandom. Its probably bc theyre my top two faves, but i do think they have strong potential to be a sweet and interesting ship, and the few interactions they have are so cute 🥺 the fact that shouhei is the only person Eric refers to by their first name other than Anna 🥹🥹 (although i do think its probably cause everyone refers to shouhei by his first name lol. If im not wrong, i think eric refers to fuji by his last name despite being very close). I also do think they’d look really good together! Despite Eric being unkempt and not into fashion, he is objectively very good looking and i think his sharp and cool features are a good contrast against shouhei’s softer and warm features. I genuinely do think shouhei is the second person eric is comfortable with, after fujishima. I also ship shouhei with chitose and akiyama! I think i started shipping shouhei with chitose sometime last year and honestly? I think they’d be a fun and hot pair. I can’t really see them being them in a serious and committed relationship, but i do think they would probably hook up here and there (or even just be really good friends, since theyre pretty similar to each other except for some differences). Akiyama/Shouhei is always going to be that one opposites attract/enemies to lovers ship for me lol. I wish their fight scenes from s1 were longer, im so curious on what the dialogue would have been like.

Yata was my first ever fave character/crush when i first got into K back in 2012, but unfortunately that died out. But i do think ericxyata is such a cute and funny pair! I remember reading this really old fic on them in which yata learns english just so he can finally respond to eric’s taunts, only to have the story end with eric kissing him on the cheek 💞 i don’t remember being sold that quick on a ship like i did with that fic lmaoo. They’re like my second favorite pair, but theres sooooo little content on them :/ thats what i hate about k. Most content are on the popular/designated ships, you barely see anything on different pairings/dynamics. Yata and Kamamoto are seen as platonic for the most part, but i can see some potential for it to turn romantic! Kamamoto is a ride and die for yata. Like if theres ever a rare chance that yata decides to leave homra (unlikely, i know), i do feel like kamamoto would probably join him idk. the loyalty there is really strong. I think yata and chitose would be interesting since chitose is a playboy while yata is a virgin, but its probably gonna end with a nasty heartbreak on both sides 😬

Confession time; i kinda hate the st writers. They are the reason why the pride was ruined during the vol2 waiting, the reason why we face constant homophobia from mlvns and the ga for shipping byler and all bc they refused to break up mlvn and also included that shit ass monologue. Now we have to wait years to see the conclusion meanwhile ppl gradualy start lose their interest. They ruined Nick's career and reputation for no reason when his site was there for years. The way they say nothing against the apparent fandom homophobia even though it is not even a secret since ppl sharw homophobic comments left and right. The way they use Will's car scene as a memeable moment even though many queer fans were devastated when the scene came out. The way they write these characters. The way they treate Will. The way they treated Robin. I have so much spite and hatred bottled in me and i am only starting to realize it after a year. If byler doesnt become canon i hope all st writers and the duffers lose their jobs and never manage to write ever again. I would even support Netlix going full bankrupt. My respect for the writers all depend on whether or not byler becomes canon and i dont care if it makes me stuck with byler or whatever. After everything the writers pulled, yes, my respect all depend on this choice for S5.

Honestly I see where you're coming from, so your feelings are completely valid. I do believe that the monologue and saving byler for the last season makes narrative sense because of the way they've written the story and how best friends to lovers stories usually work (they normally won't get together until the end of a movie, and you have to think of ST as a 5 season long movie).

I think most of those things you pointed out are more of a fandom problem, like Will crying in the van becoming a meme- I believe it was portrayed very seriously in the show and it was a certain sector of the audience who decided to memefy it. Also, the homophobia would happen even if byler became canon in season 4, sadly homophobes are everywhere in every fandom. I also believe a lot of those things you pointed out are more of Netflix's fault, because using Wills scene as a meme was something accounts like Netflix, Netflix geeked, Netflix UK and other did, but I don't recall strangerwriters doing that (but I may be wrong so please if I am let me know). Their executives were probably the ones who decided to split the season as well, and having vol 2 come out right after pride month (being a terrible coincidence because of the byler-Milkvan storyline and the homophobia that subsequently came from maloobans). If I remember correctly, the writers account has stated a couple times that everyone should be allowed to ship whoever they want. But as you pointed out, sometimes I feel like they could do a little bit more. They tanked Nick's reputation (which I can understand up to a certain point if they are trying to protect the show they are working on from getting spoiled, but maybe they should have made a less vague and incriminating statement), and they definitely could address the rampant homophobia in the fandom more frequently.

It sucks that we need to wait so many years to prove we were right, but think about how satisfying it will be once the season comes out and you watch all of those people have a breakdown, and hopefully you see interviews from the duffers explaining how that was the intention all along. If that's the case, then I'll be happy, but as you said, if all of these was for nothing and byler isn't endgame, I'll definitely consider it queerbaiting, because they have built up romantic feelings for Will on Mike's side, even if some people want to deny it. So yeah, queerbaiting in 2023 sucks, and it's totally valid for you to feel like you won't respect them anymore if they go that route. I think more people need to realize this is not a matter of whether the couple I like ends up together over the couple other people like, it's a matter of whether queer people get a respectful and deserved treatment or not. And if they don't, then they're terrible writers, because if the way they fucked up that storyline, and terrible people too.

But hopefully not. Right now, I'm really convinced byler is endgame and they know what they're doing. We have to deal with crazy Melvin stans meanwhile, but the wait will be over before you notice and they'll get really quiet and embarrassed once they realize how wrong they were. But I'd like for them to address some of the homophobic comments online a little bit more often.

Those last ask, I want to give my two cents on the subject. (It got way longer than I expected)

I know this is true to every fandom, but I notice that your favorite character and ships tend to colors your perception of a show and how much you (dis)like certain characters.

And what I’ve seen in the fandom only solidifies that:

The way Ron gets portrayed in most Kigo stories (I even read Kigo stories where he was portrayed as abusive for the heck of it)

Whatever happened to the wiki, where shippers edited it to paint Ron in such an unfavorable light

i agree with basically everything you said. i think you put it best when you said Shego is a victim of "draco in leather pants" syndrome. and what does it all stem from, ultimately?

she's hot. that's...that's it. she's disney's answer to harley quinn. curvaceous villain with just enough good qualities that you can apply redemption tales if you want to, but can also keep her fully evil if that is your preference. and of course, a villain who is complex like that is gonna be more appealing. a villain who is too....cut and dry evil, notice those ones don't get written about in fanfic very much...

i think you're also correct in that fandom applies the tragic backstory unnecessarily at times and reads too much into the "good qualities" she may display, or interprets them differently.

can we view Shego that way? yes, the writers made it so. and most folk who go the very tropey route do seem to always pair her with Kim romantically. and it frequently ends up feeling out of character... and those fic writers who acknowledge rather than ignore the age gap? it always ends up feeling like a big sisterly relationship that then turns romantic and feels wrong.

it kind of reaches a point where a lot of the fic feels copy-paste, you know? when they follow all the tropes.

and you're right, Shego is essentially the 'main character' in fandom, far and above Kim and Ron. just look at the reddit, for example... the actual KP subreddit has folks asking questions and discussing the show. the Shego subreddit has people posting hot cosplay and hot fanart. it all comes back to, ppl are focused on a hot babe. Kim is treated much the same by a huge chunk of fandom, but another huge chunk (hopefully the majority) recognize she's a minor.

(lol...yet another indication of Shego's age, that no one has any qualms at all about sexualizing her, but Kim thankfully doesn't get as heavy a treatment by fandom in that regard. still, happens a lot...)

in any case... you can't change what is. the majority of the world is always gonna be interested in a hot chick. doesn't matter the form of media. there will always be a crowd who mis-characterize whoever gets in the way of their ship, so Ron is always gonna get the short end of the stick in that regard. (except, take note... there is a large portion of fandom that is "Ron harem" - ppl who identify with Ron as the nerd he is and pair him with the hot chick; self-insert type stuff often as not.)

so....yeah. and overall, there IS more potential complexity to be had on the surface in writing "bad girl goes good" and then gets sexualized. rather than just "sexualize the good girl." Kim and Ron as the heroes, and Kim as the one portrayed seemingly without flaws, will always be portrayed at a different standard in fandom. there's just...less to do with them, on the surface.

some of this of course boils down to KP being mostly a monster of the week type show, and not intended for too much character development. Ron is indeed the most developed character with the strongest arc, and some could even argue the only arc. but he gets in the way of hot chick being with the other hot chick, sooooooooo... the overwhelming internet population isn't into fandom deeply the way we are. the overwhelming internet population is into hot chicks.

people are always gonna do what they want, which is their freedom to do... which makes the gems of fanfic and other fanworks out there where the characters are portrayed in a more canonical way (Shego as a lazy, evil by choice woman who has little to no interest in redemption) all the more appreciated.

all that said, could a good writer convince me in regards to a Shego redemption tale? certainly. it's all in how the story is told.

oh god yes i get to talk about tates ex >:) so heres the thing: despite the fact that tate still thinks of her often and the trauma of their relationship is still very heavily with him, we will never hear of her in the comic itself. remember that psy is mostly in control of the narrative and which thoughts we get to see from everyone. there are soooo many thoughts that simply dont get portrayed in the comic because psy considers them irrelevant or tonally inappropriate. so ppl who keep up with the blog actually get a lot more context and interesting tidbits that add to analyzing the characters and maybe see them more sympathetically, especially tate lol

while tate obviously wasn't perfect in the relationship i think he was very much the victim in most instances. like. he did get cheated on. it was rough. the worst part is all of his friends at the time were his girlfriend's friends, and when they broke up, they all took her side and he was alone.

since their break up, he hasn't been in any other serious relationships. lots and lots of one night stands, a few dates here and there, but he's not interested in monogamy anymore, period. and he's convinced himself that he doesn't really want a serious, romantic relationship, and is happy just sleeping around and doing whatever, but he really really yearns for someone who cares about him and loves him fully and genuinely... so like, the result of his ex is that he is very wary of trusting someone so fully with his heart like he once did, despite so desperately wanting to... I don’t get how some ppl don’t see Portia’s behaviors as problematic. So parents of ADULT children who don’t like their ADULT child’s partner have every right to run interference bcuz they have concerns or don’t like that partner? Are we serious rn? Portia can have all the concerns she wants, no matter how extreme they are, but YES the line has to be drawn on her thinking she can actively do something to change it. That’s the problem. How are ppl defending this? How are her biased, closed minded views of Spencer not a problem? She’s trying to maintain control over her daughter. This is more about Portia then Trina. That’s what’s naturally supposed to happen when kids get older, become adults. Parents have to let go. They have to adjust to losing that control they once had over their children’s lives once they become adults, trust that the foundation they provided will guide them, be there for support/advice when asked and allow them to make their own choices, for better or for worse. This is so unhealthy. Trina is a grown woman who’s in love, not 12 experiencing her first crush. I’m just stunned that some don’t see a problem with this. I bet these same ppl would have a problem if their parents tried to do that shit to them as an adult

I feel like the vast majority definitely see Portia as a problematic and the narrative is definitely portraying her thought process as problematic. I have seen some of the cultural conversations about the "meddling black mom" which I get but I think Portia's situation is a lot deeper than that. Stella is more the type to fit that sort of cultural archetype of the meddling matriarch.

I think people who are sympathetic to Portia are coming from the perspective of Spencer being a hot mess. Spencer, on paper, is pretty much every parent's worst nightmare lol. But like you said, there comes a time when you have to "let go" and the issue with Portia is that she thinks that day is never.

I really loved what someone here said about Portia coming to define herself as Trina's mother and not really knowing who she was outside of that. I do think there's a part of Portia that's afraid to be alone with herself. Even when she lost Curtis and Taggert romantically, she could pour everything into being a working mother. Trina was the thing in her life that she could control and count on while everything else was chaotic. I think Trina growing up and figuring out who she is, away from Portia, scares her because then it forces Portia to figure out who she is beyond being Trina's mother. Taggert called her out on basically using Trina as a crutch to avoid the the problems in her own life that she doesn't want to deal with.

Portia is sort of obsessed with "controlling the narrative" and the narrative of her daughter is probably the one who she values the most. Trina was on a clear track pre-Spencer and while I'd still argue that she's on that track, Portia is always gonna view Spencer as chaos and derailment for her daughter's future success, a perpetual threat.

lonely but surrounded is SUCH a good way to put it. i genuinely do think lumine is close with a LOT of the others, i think she has a lot of trust and care for them, but its not the same. its not the same depth, not the same commitment, you're SO right comparing it to like. idk !!! idk. lumine once had aether who understood everything so easily and xiao had the other yakshas they both had a family, once, they both had people who understood, once, and now no matter who they love and trust in that matter they are alone. and that's something i love so much about the dynamic i envision for them, the fact that they're able to share such a unique loneliness, the fact that in not being understood by anyone around them they're able to understand each other. there's a level of distance and disconnect between them and those around them that doesn't exist with the other. its SO fucking important to me.

xiao is SO often depicted as being either a) very protective, strong, unbreakable etc or b) very vulnerable and fragile and i fairly often see fics of like. one of them protecting the other, almost? or less that but fics where the dynamic is Skewed, where one of them has the Role of protector and the other the Role of protected, where those roles are set in stone. and i think them being on the same wavelength, capable of protecting each other at any point, equally capable of either- that's so fucking important to me. it's not just that one of them is vulnerable, its that they're vulnerable with each other. it's not just that one of them will fight, it's that they'll fight for each other and fight together. it's equal. it's shared. so much between them is shared. their loneliness, their otherness, the unique way they feel about each other, their grief.

ok ik this is just a dream but this is actually something I kinda think about a lot: the duality of lotr audience. It might just be me, but it seems more politically diverse than most other audiences. Like, someone saying theyre really into lotr can be met with "lol yeah that makes sense" even in two wildly different contexts. Oh you're catholic homeschooler? yeah I could've guessed you're a lotr nerd. Oh youre a raging homosexual? yep go figure you love lotr.

And I just find that contrast really interesting bc you cant say the same for other fandoms like star wars or marvel. And sure, you could say a lot of leftists and conservatives like those too bc, well, does everyone does. Just like lotr. But no, I don't mean it like that. For marvel and star wars its not a well known thing, like a almost stereotype, that gay people especially like them or that conservatives especially like them, whereas with lotr, at least in my experience, it is like that. As someone who was raised conservative and took a sharp left turn (lol), I feel like I notice it a bit more

a LOT of right, religious, and/or conservative people adore lotr bc it’s a cool fantasy piece that’s also clean and wholesome and—here’s the main attraction for the religious people I mentioned—written by a devout Catholic who ingrained many Christian elements and themes into it. Plus, as Tolkien fought in WWI, it also has a lot of wartime, brothers-in-arms themes, which we all know conservatives are all about. This all makes sense for why it attracts the audience I mentioned. Being a hardcore lotr fan is almost a given in those circles. Ive spent a lot of time in such circles and believe me when I'm talking mega fans

Interestingly enough, I’ve noticed that it also heavily attracts the opposite political spectrum, like leftists and the lgbtq community. Their appeal is a little less clear for me to explain, which is ironic as it’s just as familiar to me as the former but I’ll try my hand at it. It seems like queer ppl like the fantasy genre more than straight ppl (not to get deep but I reckon it has something to do with escaping the unkind realities of this world </3), and lotr is THE fantasy series. Then it unashamedly portrays soft affection between men--and also badass powerful women--which not only is appreciated by ppl who are tired of societal restraints and expectations of gender norms, but it allows ppl to read said affection as romantic if they so wish. Lotr is a story about hanging onto hope and love in the face of darkness, and that's something a lot of queer people resonate with.

and then theres the crossover of these two worlds that may play a part in lotr having two wildly different categories of fans: the individuals that started in the first and hopped over into the second. I fall into this one as do several friends of mine. We grew up in the religious culture where lotr/tolkien was praised by both authority figures and peers, but even after we left that life behind we still clung to the magical land of middle-earth.

idk. i might just be more aware of this duality bc I've experienced both sides--and thus, the power of frequency illusion--but its just an odd experience to witness this shared intense passion for a franchise between two groups of very different people
