What made you ship it?

It started as a joke-

Okay, but it actually did, though. I was watching The Darkest Nightmare with some friends (years ago now) and we got to the ferris wheel fight and suddenly Akai and Rei stop fighting because Conan's shouting for them and I'm just like "those are Conan's divorced dads" and it stuck with me for years.

So I jokingly shipped them for years (I wasn't really involved in the fandom at that point, and wasn't going out of my way to look for content). And then early last year, I got dragged back into DetCo and have since fully embraced this pair. They have my whole heart.

Even if not for what happened in M20, we still have everything in canon (the whole Scar Akai thing, Rei deciding that Akai definitely isn't dead because how could Kir of all people get the better of him, he's too good for that, Rei's entire obsession, the Scarlet arc confrontation with "Okiya" that is so ridiculous on so many levels, etc). And then there's M26 and wow. Taking "Conan's divorced dads" to a whole new level. (And Rei needing Kazami to call to him twice to get his attention after that phone call, I see you Rei. I know what you are.)

They have so much chemistry, and their past is messy and complicated, but completely intertwined with one another due to their time together in the organization and the tragedy of Scotch's death. At this point, I don't think you can fully separate them, not without destroying part of what makes them them in the process.

Akai not telling the FBI about Bourbon (and I still stand by the fact that Gosho could've easily had James be like "oh yeah, Bourbon, Akai mentioned him" if he wanted me to believe that Akai wasn't protecting Bourbon), or the truth about Scotch. Rei single-mindedly focused on finding (and, yes, killing) Akai, but then deciding to at least temporarily be civil after the tea party (give us the tea party, Gosho!). Not to mention, all the times he brings up or thinks about Akai unprompted in ZTT, and the literal photo he has of Rye, stacked with Sherry and Conan. How, even though he hates Akai with every fiber of his being, he acknowledges that Akai should've been good enough to save Scotch.

They drive me absolutely insane. I love them. There's probably points that I've missed here, but we're already gonna have a novel with this one, so.

What are your favorite things about the ship?

They get each other. They've both been in the organization. They understand what it's like to do the dirty work, to have blood on their hands. They know how it feels to constantly wear a mask that you can't remove without risk of death.

They're both deeply traumatized individuals, and while that makes things complicated on the communication front, it also means that they can better support each other, because they understand trauma.

Rei's family has gone completely unmentioned, and Akai's is Complicated™ so neither of them likely would really have any expectation of a normal family. They can be each other's family now (well, post-canon).

When Rei's not trying to rip Akai to shreds, they work well together. They'd be a pretty unstoppable team if Gosho let them.

And the fact that Akai can see through Rei's masks even easier than Rei clocked Okiya being Akai without having ever met the man (even if he was tricked into believing otherwise at first) just makes me love them more.

I don't think there's anyone else in the entire series that can fully understand either of them the way they can each other. And even when they're not getting along (read: Rei's starting shit again), they still have a lot of respect for each other's skills.

Also the fact that Akai rarely uses any honorifics for anyone, but he uses -kun for Rei even from the Scarlet arc always gets me.

And how could I not love the "confrontation" in the Kudous' entryway, with both of them pointing guns at each other and Akai's fucking smiling like the idiot he is. That can't be healthy. They deserve each other.

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

I've struggled so much to come up with something for this question, and I think I've finally landed on something. I think my unpopular opinion is that I really didn't care for Akai before Rei showed up and we got their possibly onesided enemies-to-whatever-the-fuck-they-have-going-on. He just was not interesting to me. He was just standard "Wow Cool Awesome Man" character, even after his tragic backstory with Akemi.

And then Rei shows up and we get all of the mess and now he's my second favorite character and they belong together. (At least partially because nobody else deserves to be stuck with either of these two disaster men.)

24.) How do their personalities affect their relationship? Do their characteristics compliment each other, or clash often?

I think their personalities are very complimentary! As well as their wants and desires and the way they see each other, though with the caveat that this only works once they like, learn to communicate lmfao. We've seen what happens when they don't (screams from the eclipse in the background). But once they understand that they care for and respect one another (crazy concept 🙄) I think they'd have an easier time of telling each other how they feel, and also solving problems between them.

It wouldn't be perfect because they're both fucked up dudes, but Guts is blunt and often says what he thinks, and Griffith really likes that about him. And once Guts gets over the whole "Griffith is Untouchable™" thing, I think he'd be more comfortable prodding him when he's clearly brooding over something.

29.) Describe their nighttime routine.

Hmmmm depends on their living situation I guess! If this is still when Griffith and Guts are living in the castle/barracks, then they'd have to be a lot more careful about like, sleeping in the same bed. I imagine eventually Griffith would be given his own land by the king, and Guts would have his own house nearby (except they basically just live together anyway lol).

But if we're talking general nightime routines, Guts would get out of his day clothes and put on whatever he sleeps in (probably undergarments and no shirt lol) and splashes some water in his face, and that'd be about it lol. Griffith would have a whole routine with his hair-- he wouldn't bathe every day just because that requires a lot of labor, but he'd comb his hair and apply whever haircare concoction he's come up with through trial and error, and then he'd probably braid it for sleep. I like to think Guts likes helping out with that bit lol.

He'd also wash his face and then apply some sort of oil, then offer some for Guts like he does every night. Whether or not Guts accepts depends entirely on his mood (and how dry it is that night lol), though Griffith doesn't push either way. Sometimes Griffith might stay up a little later to do some paperwork or read, sometimes he might read to Guts (Guts can read at this point but still prefers being read to lol, I doubt he'd ever become a big reader on his own), and then they cuddle up and go to sleep <3

31.) Do they often go out on dates? What are these like?

I think they'd go on outings together, and they might do spontaneous romantic gestures for one another, but I don't think they'd really like, frame it as Romantic Dates™ in a modern sense. Like they don't really go out for picnics-- they might go out riding just the two of them for a hunt, or to spar, or some other physical activity that they enjoy (didn't intend to imply anything there lol, but that too 😏), and then they'd eat the food they brought along because of course they'd get hungry. And if during all that they steal kisses or Guts picks some flowers for Griffith or whatever, then so be it.

33.) How do they flirt? Who’s the worse flirt?

I think they'd be incredibly obvious flirters, even if they don't think they're being obvious lol. If they're in public it'd all have to be implicit of course, and I think Griffith would be the one who verbally flirts more. I think Guts would like, send him looks™ and then get back at him by grabbing his ass when no one's looking or something lmfao.

Favorite canon moment (Drarry):

The identity (non) reveal scene at Malfoy Manor is my favourite scene from the movies. I love Tom Felton’s nuanced facial expressions as he recognizes Harry, it felt like a really charged moment. As for the books, I’ll have to go with their first meeting at Madam Malkin’s. I love Harry’s immediate dislike of spoiled Draco, that bit of dialogue did a great job establishing both characters and their future dynamics. I also love how that pivotal brief encounter made Harry choose not to join Slytherin, which pretty much shaped his path and relationship with Draco at Hogwarts.

Why don’t you ship it?

This is probably going to come as a huge shock, but I have literally never thought about this pairing until like ten minutes ago. There is no world in which I think Rei and Takagi would or could end up together. So I don't ship it.

But it would be funny, though. Even if it means breaking up the one singular good het pairing in the series. Sorry, Satou, your man's been snapped up by the local waiter/undercover cop.

What would have made you like it?

I think I'd need Takagi to be a little less... uh. Takagi. He's way too nice, it would never work out. And Rei would scare him death. They wouldn't last. Maybe they'd just have a brief, hot fling or something.

Knowing me, I could have a whole au cooked up for them in a few days with the right motivation.

Despite not shipping it, do you have anything positive to say about it?

I think if they could work on any fundamental level, then Takagi would make a great househusband for him.... eventually. He's kind of a work in progress.

They are certainly not the worst Rei pairing to ever exist.

Hilary, obviously. She is the planner, and Tyson is the guy who will show up to have a good time regardless.

I think they’d both have their specialties but maybe Hilary would occasionally be pretend to be bad at something just to see Tyson get all exited over trying to win stuff for her.

Who drags the other(s) onto a rollercoaster?

Tyson, and he always tells her that it won’t be as bad as the last time and she always reluctantly agrees, only to regret it later when he’s showing their friends all the crazy selfies he took with her where she’s screaming her head off.

I think this would equally be divided between the two because Hilary is anal like that, but she would want to take charge of the cleaning related chores since she knows no one can match her standard of “clean”.

These weren't answered in order, so sorry if it doesn't read too coherently from top to bottom or if there's some repetition...

6. How do they make up/apologize after an argument?

They... don't? You see, apologising would imply acknowledging that something is wrong, that they did something wrong, and that's just not their style.

Agon never apologises for betraying Hiruma in middle school, doesn't really explain why he did it, so they don't get to the root of the problem until much, much later, and their relationship recovers slower for it.

They will get better at communicating with time and maturity (I hope). For the time being, when the guilty party is tired of the cold shoulder, they'll tease and insult the other like normal, maaaybe a few inconspicuous acts of service...

18. How do they care for each other when one of them is wounded/sick?/20. How do they comfort each other when one of them is upset? Is this method of comfort effective?

They are both quite allergic to vulnerability and sentiment, so I think their go-to comfort method would be to treat the other as they always do, mainly heckling. I think both the upset/sick/wounded one and the one offering comfort would find this reassuring: pretending that everything is normal and as it should be. Not particularly healthy, but it kinda works for them?

That's if it's something serious. If one of them gets a cold, he's made fun of mercilessly.

40. Do they have any regrets in their relationship?

SHINRYUUJI lmaooo they both can get quite edgy about it too

Hiruma regrets letting his guard down and thinking he could anticipate Agon, regrets "letting him in" and showing enough of his soft belly that Agon knew right where to stab. At the internationals they are shown working together seamlessly, as if they hadn't spent the previous 2+ years feuding, but it's gonna take them a while to learn to truly trust each other again. Or at all, I'm not certain they ever reached that trust in middle school tbh

Agon won't ever admit he regrets anything, ever, in his life, but don't let him fool you. Right before he chose to steal Kurita's scholarship, I think he regretted hanging around Hiruma enough to feel things. And since he has the emotional maturity of a premature baby, instead of processing his frustration and jealousy like a normal person, he did that instead. And I don't think he regrets it per se but even if he tried to push him away and hurt him, Hiruma was the only thing he had close to a friendship , so I don't think he was fond of the consequences. It also leads more or less directly, with the creation of the Devil Bats and Sena's recruitment in particular, to his downfall as an unbeatable player. Which is ultimately a good thing for him, both as a player and a person, but I'm sure there's some regret there.

46. Do they consider their relationship casual or serious? Is the answer different depending on who you ask? Why?

I mean, they've never been casual or normal about each other (I think it's pretty clear Shinryuuji happened because of Agon's possessiveness and jealousy, but I don't think that's what the question is going for...)

They both like to pretend it's not, but their relationship has always been serious: partners-in-crime, teammates, friends... Their romantic relationship, however, is another thing. Agon has 0 experience with meaningful relationships and starts off both with internalised homophobia and in denial, and Hiruma is ace and his main love is American football, so just getting them to realise and admit to romantic feelings is A Journey. After everything that's happened between them, they need to learn to trust each other, so I don't think they'd get it together until uni at the very least. When they do eventually get together, I think it'd still take them a bit of time to be on the same page about what the want and expect of their relationship, but they do eventually get there.

48. Do they talk about their future together? Why or why not?

Oh boy, this is quite the point of contention between them. The times they talk about it, it's... tense.

Hiruma loves American football and his goal is the NFL, even though his chances of actually getting in are quite low, he'll try his hardest and try any means to make it possible.

Agon learns to like amefuto with time, but he started playing because of Hiruma (directly or indirectly, we don't get confirmation in canon), and at least part of his enjoyment of it seems to be playing with Hiruma (the only time we see Agon laugh because he's enjoying himself is during his play with Hiruma against USA!! He himself acknowledges that!!). He doesn't seem to have any further ambition for himself, in amefuto or in life in general, so he'll probably keep playing as long as Hiruma does, wherever Hiruma is. If Hiruma doesn't get into the NFL, I don't think Agon would aim for it for himself, even though he probably has a good chance of getting in.

That would be SO frustrating for Hiruma, who's never been shown to be jealous of other people's talents, but he'd probably think Agon was wasting his genius. He definitely wouldn't appreciate Agon using him as a compass for his own life and goals, either. And furthermore, where does that leave them? There's no professional amefuto league in Japan, as far as I know. Would they be content playing on the semi-professional league? They are both geniuses who bore easily, they could do anything they wanted, but will anything be able to hold their interest if amefuto as a full-time occupation is not a possibility?

They both get frustrated whenever the subject is brought up, but they do need to talk about it eventually.
