a loved one of mine sent me this post back in June, but i was immediately afraid of being a party-pooper so i didnt post my reply publicly but, now, ive had more than enough emotional distance from the knee-jerk anxiety of "oh no what if i correct people and everyone sends me hate and doxxes me" that im like "oh yeah i should post that" lmao (if i already did this: sorry, chronic memory loss stinks. i dont remember having done this before lmao)

if you dont like reading a long thing of text to get information btw, totally get it, here is a video link to Jessica Vill's video about the topic which will walk you through identical information if that is your preferred way to process/learn

also: you can easily google and wiki my sources, these arent hard things to verify once you know to look them up to begin with. but i did include screenshots below as my various sources; as well as evidence of "yeah, it would be super easy to fact-check me about this if you feel so inclined" [transcripts of images will be my reblog of this post under a read more, bc tumblr kept throwing a fit otherwise if i did it here] nonetheless, never blame people for not knowing what they didnt know. the misconception is absolutely the fault of PBS (for not fact-checking the author of that article pre-publication if nothing else) for publishing an article preying on the Black community's pre-existing attachment to Betty Boop for clicks. i wont be going into that article itself that had so terribly misreported, esp since PBS already apologized, im just reporting the information i know

i will add the following corrections to what i said in that DM:

i do not "blame" anyone above for the misinformation. if i "blame" anyone, it is PBS for claiming Fleischer consciously based Betty Boop's personality and design on Esther Jones, which you can see in the screenshot above; where BlackHistory.com cites and quotes that said misreported article. thats who i was groaning about in my DM, the PBS article; i was not nor was i ever attributing misinformation to come from @rikareena or @lveshae, but especially not @rikareena who fact-checked and was lied to by (a) said misinformation and (b) there not being an editorial within the snippet SAYING "oh btw sorry, our source we mentioned was bad actually. PBS apologized for the misinformation and not fact-checking it and we should too for spreading it without fact-checking our source ourselves". you should always google your facts and that is exactly what @rikareena did. it was not anybody in this post's fault that these sources were based on misinformation. do NOT blame or send negative attention to any tumblr-user/individual person within this post or outside of this post, istg, demand better of these website-sources instead (esp to have fact-checking teams themselves) and not individual people omfg

we do have few photos of Little Esther (you can see all of them in Jessica Vill's video), not just one. but they all are of her as a child. we have NO confirmed photos of her as an adult. also, to clarify, Little Esther was who i was talking about in regards to lost media, we have VERY little records of her performances (to which im glad people HAVE been looking into her and finding more about her that we can confirm is definitely her through this misreport. i love that she is re-gaining fans and her story is being shared, very big silver lining of this whole thing. if you're into uncovering lost media, please do look into her and help find more about her) also, she goes by "Baby Esther" and "Little Esther" as well as her name of Esther Jones/Esther Lee Jones

the photo i said was maybe her as an adult was incorrect. you'll see it below, it's the "Do Tell by James Van Der Zee, circa 1930" portrait that has oft been misattributed to Esther Jones. we do not know who this woman modeling for him had been

the cosplayer in question i mentioned was specifically Olya Gussy. she dressed up as Betty Boop and was photographed in 2008 by Retro Atelier. she is often misattributed as being an adult Esther Jones, which she is not

part of why i can never remember Betty Boop's primary "original" voice-actress is because Betty Boop has had SO MANY, even in just "classic Betty years". but i was specifically thinking of Mae Questel. the main three classic 1930s Betty Boop voices were Mae Questel, Mary Hines, and Bonnie Poe, but there were also several others in the 30s alone. but, yeah, when i was trying to talk about Betty Boop's voice-actress, it was Questel specifically who was in my head

i got my information wrong about the Betty Boop musical "Boop!". i got confused; i blame my chronic memory loss, but still my bad. anyway. it has so far ONLY been OFF-Broadway and is DUE to be ON Broadway in 2025 (get hyped!!! im so excited!!). off of Broadway, it has so far only been in Chicago according to the Wikipedia. and though it only had a had a short run in Chicago overall, the entire time it WAS in Chicago, Betty Boop was played by a Black musical actress: Jasmine Amy Rogers. love her, go support her!!

here are various screenshots with more information. feel free to look into them and/or the court-case on your own time. this is just "yep, shallow 2+2=4 levels of using google/wiki to fact-fact" on myself (which, to reiterate: is NOT a diss on anyone who didnt know what they didnt know, outside of this post or within it, idgaf, i do not tolerate trolls and dickheads being mean and utalizing me/my posts as a weapon to do that with) and show my sources in a more visual way

so yeah!! Betty Boop absolutely should be claimed by Black people since she has so many connections to Black American art within her performance, and Betty should 100% be drawn as a Black woman by any and everybody who wants to depict her that way

but also dont give Fleischer Studios credit for things they didnt do. they did not utalize Ether Jones in their initial conception of Betty in any purposeful or concious way; they did not design a Black animated female character in the 1930s. do not give them that credit that they have not earned. Fleischer Studios only utalized Esther Jones to get out of a court-case they had with Helen Kane. them accidentally creating a character whose performance is heavily in connection with Black American artists, like Esther Jones, is VERY DIFFERENT than them basing a character off of Esther Jones or being inspired by her in of by itself. do not give them flowers for making a Black female character star in her own shorts (and then rescind said flowers-that-they-didnt-earn for how she then "became white-washed" like that PBS article misreported) when they just?? didnt do any of that?

(also this is mostly unrelated but bc it is tangentially related to "dont give Fleischer Studios credit for things they didnt do" thing: if you know me, youll see me specifically crack jokes about Betty Boop being wlw and/or about her "he/him butch girlfriend, Freddie". im talking about her canon boyfriend, Fred or Fearless Fred, who is a human (unlike her also once-canon boyfriend of Bimbo, the anthropomorphic dog). do not take me making jokes about headcanons and how "Fred's design is too sapphic to be a cis man" as legitimate fact. youll see the internet jokes of a similar vein sometimes, im definitely not the originator of that joke)

Betty Boop is for everybody in the same way as youve likely seen that Hatsune Miku trend where everyone is making a cultural Miku re-design to their specific ethnicity or way of life; we've seen Betty Boop be flexibly "for everyone" tons of times, even outside of her being a nostalgic tribute to the flapper girl era (a cultural niche in which women of ALL backgrounds took part). in classic Betty Boop cartoons alone, we've seen:

Betty Boop as white/white-passing (especially any time they copied Helen Kane which Fleischer Studios did OFTEN and didn't even HIDE until it became a legal issue; but also Helen Kane wasn't even being that original. baby voices like Betty Boop's was a common gimmick of actresses then and Helen Kane's catch-phrase wasn't even her own. i still personally think Fleischer was copying Kane, but also it makes 100% sense why she lost that lawsuit),

we have had Betty Boop be Jewish (the most obvious being parents in some shorts speaking with thick Yiddish accents, implying she is the daughter of immigrant parents, most famously in the "Minnie the Moocher" short as part of the set-up before any music even began to play),

we've had her be rotoscoped dancing using Indigenous Hawaiian dancers, in their regalia, and given a tan (multiple times but my favorite is "Bamboo Isle" for sure),

we've had her collab with Cab Calloway (a famous Black jazz musician for anyone who doesn' recognize the name) along with others and had Betty Boop's catchphrase ultimately come from Baby Esther's scatting, along with other instances of Betty Boop's performances having connection to Black American performance-art

and, hell, you could even make arguments about Betty Boop as a cowgirl in her "Nan McGrew" parodies. cowgirls and cowboys were a largely queer and/or POC group, paid very little but allowed a lot of freedom of expression and welcomed isolation, until America cinema and the like white-washed cowboys to hell and back. you could see Betty Boop as anyone of any identity, really, but especially as being of the marginalized in that vein

Fleischer Studios did definitely (accidentally popularize infantalization in animated women woah who said that, who brought up my special-interest) only announce that they used an alagamation of flapper women in their design to better shoot down Helen Kane, but that doesn't mean it wasn't true. Betty Boop IS the 1930s tribute to the flapper era of the 20s and all the women from there, of all skin-colors and ways of life. anybody can cosplay or draw Betty Boop. but Black people especially do have a special connection to Betty Boop that cannot be denied and is v beautiful

(i could talk for a few hours about Betty Boop, and i will be the first to admit this isn't even her first "well, originally..." debate concerning her as a character, much less the breadth of her impact OR all aspects of her history. there's all the ways she did steal/borrow from Helen Kane, at least in my opinion; her impact of infantalization in animated women's designs; her hyper-sexualization and how theater at the time functioned (in a sexual way*) and her specific "gags in the margins"(*×2) animators would make; her almost movie about her and her father that a lot of Betty Boop fans have dug up and shared the conceptual work of around; and even the debate of her age as that is constantly in flux depending on where you look and at what time of history (*×3). all of which i mention in an "if you liked learning about Betty, there is a lot more to look into learning about her" way rather than an "ask me, ask me, ask me" way)

luffy trying to free himself even if it meant ripping his own hands, from the book prison on the whole cake island - really gave off the same energy as zoro trying to cut his legs off to free himself from being made into a candle statue on the little garden island, all those arcs before

(and fortunately, both times they were saved before they managed to actually cut the limbs)

(the zoro on little garden when luffy asks about the danger and he asnwers "no, no problem here." is kind of similar to the thriller bark's "nothing happened." ;-; something something strength for luffy, no weaknesses shown huh.. i wonder if there will ever be a follow up or consequences about this type of behavior sometime maybe even more later.. )

this part about both luffy and zoro acting in such similar way when captured that they would rather sever their limbs than to stay in that place - even if they were nowhere near each other at the moment, but have this type of same thinking woven into their being -

it reminded me of the time on fishman island when nami was also the only one present both times when luffy and zoro (separately) talked about how they didn't want to be heroes, because heroes had to share food/booze:

they really share the same braincell!!

(one more comparison- there's something similar about the cutting their own limb to protect something precious to them, to free themselves, just like kyros did in dressrosa flashbacks when he went up against doflamingo, ch 742, 776,. when even though he sacrificed the leg- it allowed him to fight even without it later on.)

(and last point - there's also something about this theme of losing limbs to protect something - when sanji had the handcuffs threatening to explode if he left the whole cake island, but i'm not at the end of that arc yet, so I'm not sure if it comes up again except his sister telling him they were fake, but still even before - he was trully terrified to risk it - both for his hands bc they cook for luffy(!!his captain) and for strawhats, but all the other threats he had to think about! truly what an intense and complicated arc!)

remembering the most memorable mc's (with canon appearences) from the otomes i played

all of them are phone games btw. and looong rambling about the games after the cut!

Mystic messenger has been in my radar since i was in elementary school but i played it for the first time after the spanish traslation came out (2017 i think?) Seven shaped my type in such a specific way that im not really sure why loved him so much (it was the whole "he loves you in every route" stuff). I like a lot the default mc, most of the fandom did and that was enough to won me over

Rosa is top tier protagonist tbh, Tears of Themis has really good story and characters (as far i played, not a lot but i enjoyed it) The reason i'm not that much of a fan is bc the game is expensive asf and not very free to play friendly. You're either lucky or have a big wallet with the gacha

Ephemeral has to be one of the best free to play otomes i've played tbh (if my memories aren't tricking me, it's been years) Good artwork, good storyline, good characters and as far i remember you can unlock one chapter of the character route per day (mabye two days, idk) and the mc's background has an important role in every route (she's a zombie! she's pretty now but eventually will fall apart, aaaaand her story gets expanded in one of the routes!) ((shes also adorable)) There's also a sequel, if you wanted more of the boys! never finished it but i'd recommend it

Honorable mentions! Huellitas Mágicas is a great game! has a really good cast with well fleshed arcs for all the characters, even the scondary ones! The game shines more for the development of *all* the characters rather than just the protagonist/ml. The main theme is overcoming insecurities! Each love interest has a different way of helping our (very insecure) protagonist and helping different characters with their own struggles :DD

10/10 i recommend this game if you want something cute and can be finished in a few hours, if i remember right. It also has a sequel! with like- 12 new love interests, also never finished it bc i didnt found a guide that worked for me but ñek

A3! is my canon event as a gacha player. Discovered the english/global server, tried it and got bored, left it for a few months, tried it again and fell in love, noticed the game was going to shut down bc low sales -HAHA :(-. This is not a otome btw, this is here bc Izumi has to be one of my favorite protagonists in gacha games ever

last but not least! Obey me! Shall we date? oh dear, what have they done to you :(. The original had intense powercreep to force you to pull cards -multiple times bc that makes them stronger- and even now, the company showed a lot of favoritism to some characters, leaving others to dust bc they don't make the same money. Not to say, they released a new game with the same cast and new main story (ignoring all what happend before). And let me say: THEY LITERALLY WANTED TO KILL THE ORIGINAL GAME.

Nightbringer might be a decent game but i don't trust the devs anymore, i still remember what happend with Asmo's birthday right after the release, and honestly i don't want to sit there watching how they disrespect my favorite characters again and again and again. Loved the characters hated the devs. 5/10 you can play it if you want but i don't recommend spending money on it, it's not worth it, just search #obey me here in tumblr and enjoy the amazing fanworks that i can assure you have a lot more love than the game itself

okay here is the theory/headcanon i mentioned in this post

both han sooyoung and kim dokja decide that the best way to get yoo joonghyuk's trust is by saying they're prophets, even knowing his anna croft history. they both refer to the 46th scenerio in their 'make me your companion' speeches (implied to be what 41!shin yoosung told him to make him trust her during the 2nd round) so clearly this is a tried and true method, and they expect it to work.

and yeah, anna croft betrayed him in the 2nd round, but this doesn't seem to make him distrust all people with future knowledge, just her? He also still tries to seek out The Disaster of Floods help in his next round (and when that fails he turns to kim dokja). He very much still wants a prophet to tell him what to do, anna croft just wasn't the one

i don't know if he has no faith in his own decision making skills but the second someone other than him proves capable of making a plan, he follows that one instead. (and the only thing yjh sees as making you capable is knowing the future - so usually its only him unless he meets another prophet)

he doesnt even need to know what the plan is! he will follow it even when it actively makes things worse for him and against his better judgement, just because a prophet says so. (even 1863, who has literally more knowledge than any other round, still decides to follow hsy's plan over his own)

and im not kidding about the 'against his better judgment'. he lets hsy let his sister die. he doesnt kill anna croft because kim dokja said so. WHYYYYY SUCH TRUST YJH DIDNT WE LEARN FROM ANNA??? i kind of get kim dokja, but there is no love lost between him and 1863!hsy. yet he still follows her plan to a T.

my theory is that yoo joonghyuk's blind faith in prophets makes sense if theres some remnants of the 0th round in his subconsoious memory.

the round where he got carried through the scenerios and reached the end bc dkos was giving him future knowledge. and he doesnt remember this, but what if subconsciously, he knows that he reached the end with future knowledge once? so it should be possible once more?

do you think yoo joonghyuk looks at prophets in hopes one of them might be the the one he doesnt even know hes searching for?

Why c!endersmile were actually friends

ALTERNATIVELY TITLED: my crazy thesis on two bad bitches with not a single moment of screentime fueled purely by my own insanity

ALTERNATIVELY alternatively titled: to all loreheads please be nice i dont usually lorepost. feel free to engage though

So my return is courtesy of litchi, who mentioned c!endersmile like once a month ago, and got me thinking about them so hard I couldn't just walk away.

Namely, litchi reminded me of a few theories I have concerning c!endersmiles relationship, that I developed back when i was watching the SMP live. This might make my recollection of some events a little fuzzy, but everything should be canon compliant cause I was thinking about all this as I watched.

I was already watching ranboo pretty regularly at the point the prison arc started, I cant resist a really weird guy with horrible debilitating anxiety. I already thought the whole hearing dreams voice in his head was really interesting, but as the prison arc evolved it became clear that ranboos relationship with dream wasnt just some hallucination inside ranboos head and actually had some substance.

My theory really started to develop into what it is now with the explosions on the prison roof which led to the lockdown and tommys death; these were confirmed to be set by ranboo in his enderwalk state. He was one of the only people online at the time, ranboo found tnt in his inventory afterwards, and I think dream also told sam he knew ranboo did it at some point, although I can't find the exact stream.

At that point it was obvious that enderwalking ranboo held a different set of beliefs, alliances, and likely more memories than the "awake" ranboo we saw most of the time on streams, and was acting against amnesiac ranboos wishes. The explosions above the prison along with the reveal that ranboo had been regularly visiting dream in prison confirmed that dream and ender!ranboo were some sort of allies.

At the time, my assumption was that ranboo had simply made an attempted prison break. It wouldnt be a stretch to assume, if ranboo had visited regularly, that he would have noticed the poor conditions and tried to break his ally out. However, after the confirmation of the staged finale, and a better look at cdreams motivations(wanting to provide protection for punz, separating himself very publicly from his only known ally to keep them safe) the idea that enderwalk ranboo, an ally of dreams, would go against dreams explicit wishes to stay locked in that prison began making less sense.

It would only make sense if either:

enderwalk never knew about the plan or

enderwalk knew about the plan but went against it anyway

1 is a very tempting explanation. c!dream rarely lets anyone close. even punz, who knew the plan intimately, wasn't aware of dreams true motivations to bring the server back to a peaceful time before conflict. but..... it didnt sit right with me.

Two reasons for this: I know some people may have stopped watching/never watched ranboo lore, but towards the end of the prison arc, ranboo began seeing flashes of "lessons" appear on screen. These lessons all had that utilitarian and paranoid feel a lot of dreams actions/reasoning have, like "dont trust anybody"(paraphrasing, thats just what i remember the core of that message being) or "never hesitate to gain a favor from someone, you can use it to get something from them later". anyone remember technos favor to dream? It was heavily implied these lessons were meant to be from dream, directed at c!enderwalk. This would mean the two spent a significant amount of time together. not only that, dream was sharing his *life philosophy* with ender!ranboo. thats not just something dream would share with anyone, and implies a close allyship at the least. its almost like he was teaching a pupil. yeah, sure, some of his lessons were a little fucked up and weird in that dream sort of way, but he was looking out for the kid. and it seems that enderwalk wasnt hesitant to act on those lessons either. he promised to keep a shulker safe for foolish, gaining a favor, and didnt sign a single one of those prison visitation waivers, on top of sam discovering they were corrupted into enderian when he checked LMAO.

This alone would be enough to persuade me enderwalk HAD to have been let in on the plan, at least so he wouldnt cause any problems (such as trying to get his ally out of prison).

but the other reason is... ranboos stated philosophy against conflict. he doesnt like sides, he wishes they wouldn't exist. I remember watching a stream and nearly jumping out of my seat when he told chat he just wished the server could just be one big happy family! because that is nearly word for word what a bunch of loreheads were saying about dreams motivations at the time(and now obviously lmao). if we keep in mind their contact for those "lessons", ranboos visits to dream in prison, AND the fact that dreams and ranboos motivations coincide on a level even Above dream and punzs(punz seemed to have been unaware of and also not particularly motivated by dreams wish for peace) i cant really imagine dream not letting this guy in on the plan.

which leaves us with 2) ranboo tried to break dream out against dreams wishes.

Maybe ranboo was just an ally and chickened out after he saw dreams mistreatment in prison and went against the plan, but... dream missed him after sam barred him from visiting. he asked sapnap to deliver a note to ranboo(just a smiley face, likely with the hopes of triggering an enderwalk) despite fearing for his ally punz enough to lock himself in prison. it feels reminicent to how dream sounds when he comments on george not visiting him once. like he missed a friend despite trying so hard to separate himself from the ones he'd had.

Maybe ranboo tried to break in because he saw a friend being mistreated, and couldn't leave the plan stand.

And that kind of makes sense doesn't it? that dream, someone whos paranoid about how peoples connection to him puts them in danger, would choose an amnesiac who spends most of their time terrified of dream, and wouldnt remember any of his plans or their friendship to use against either of them in the first place?

A/N - writer’s block has hands y’all im ngl💀 but i do have a couple things drafted up🤭 (spy!yeji but you didnt hear it from me)

“Stop making that face.”

“What face?”

“You keep scrunching your cheeks everytime I put one on, it messes it all up.”

“Oh because it’s supposed to be structured?” You asked, feeling the mess on your face.

Several stickers, all pink and white following the Barbie color theme she loved so much. You thought they were pimple patches, and you were foolish enough to ask about them, believing her when she told you they were.

You trusted her, as one would their girlfriend, so you let her on your lap, her makeup half-done as she took a break to cover your two pimples that had popped out overnight.

You found out they were regular stickers about two minutes later, when she couldn’t contain her laughter anymore. By then it was too late to get her to stop, she’d tasted how fun it was.

Her giggles kept leaving the sweetest smile on her face. If it weren’t for it, you’d have whined her out of your lap far long ago.

She seemed happy. The way her eyes never failed to smile along with her lips, you swore it was the most beautiful sight this world had to offer. What an honor to be the cause behind it.

So long as it was harmless, you were okay with whatever could bring her joy. Even getting stickers on your face that would definitely make you break out more.

The things you’d do for that woman.

“Yes it is structured.” She said as she focused on another sticker. “I’m trying not to overbear your cheeks.”

You couldn’t help but laugh at the way her lips mindlessly parted. You’d think she was dealing with something with much higher stakes.

She was so effortlessly endearing. Was she even aware of how easily she could make you weak?

“Why not? That should be the point. It’s like blush, no?” You argued, making her chuckle.

“That’s ridiculous. No, it’s not.”

“Why not?”

“It’s just stickers.” She answered, focused on yet another one she applied to your chin this time.

“Are you gonna be done any time soon?” You wondered.

As much as you loved Momo, your muscles were starting to strain from trying to hold still for so long.

“I am actually. Do you want to see?” She grinned, reaching for the pocket mirror in your hand.

You nodded, smiling back at her before the sight was replaced with your own self.

“What do you think?” She asked, and you couldn’t help but laugh in response.

“Momo, why?”

“What?” She whined despite joining in on your laughter.

“Just—Why?”

“I don’t know, you asked and then I saw you looked pretty so I just continued. You told me I could!”

“Oh, so I’m not pretty without them? Do I have to live with these on my face forever? Look at me!”

“I am! You look nice, I wanna kiss your cheeks so bad, but it’s going to mess it all up.” She pouted, running her thumb over the stickers ever so gently.

“I’d rather kiss your lips anyway.” You shrugged.

“Just say cheese.” She rolled her eyes, grabbing her phone to capture the memory she’d just half-forced on you.

You simply laughed, following her orders as you looked into the camera. She took a few pictures, different angles catching the love you shared and gave each other so happily.

The two of you looked awfully wholesome in all of them. Looking at them, you were almost jealous of yourself before remembering you’re the one she loves.

What an honor. Hopefully you’ll stick around each other for a long, long while.

okay so its going to be impossible for me to write a full post about isat until after my 2nd playthrough and i have a bunch of notes, but i WILL be insane about how the senses are depicted, especially things siffrin smells, tastes and sees.

(spoilers for the whole game but when i get to act 4/5 ill put it under a cut)

because it starts off normal. everything that's experienced for the first couple of loops is alright, and that's because siffrin's mental state is still mostly the same as when they went into the house for the first time with the squad.

until the text starts commenting on little things, like how the cookies are getting old to the malanga fritters not being exactly the same as how sif is trying to remember, to how whenever they get to the end and talk to the head housemaiden how they smell burnt sugar just before looping back to the start.

the most jarring is the sight. slowly, throughout all the loops you start seeing an image of siffrin standing somewhere, such as in a hallway, before vanishing, and it gets a bit more common the more loops you've been through. it becomes more obvious the more things taste less like anything (and the more the game comments on how siffrin's stomach feels) and how easy it is to miss something new someone says (because you and siffrin are speeding through everything you hear), how quickly his mental state is declining.

(now spoilers for acts 4 and 5 because thats when it gets Real)

during act 4 it's possible (for some ungodly reason), when talking to bonnie at least for the first time in a loop, for the music to cut off and their sprite suddenly be half covered in black. because. why not. (this happened the second time in act 4 i talked to bonnie in dormont and i jumped badly)

the most probable explanation for seeing this is because of how the last moments in act 3 are of bonnie literally being crushed by the king's hand. probably siffrin remembering what happened and it starting to overlay in his vision.

it's probably also why you see other sifs throughout the castle, especially the further along you go. either he's seeing vestiges of past loops, or hallucinating. probably both. their mental state is getting more and more worse.

act 5 shows this even more, with blacked out sprites of the other characters and visions of them in places such as the break rooms, or getting their dialogue when interacting with objects despite siffrin being completely alone in their rampage throughout the castle. most notable is the mirror room dialogue.

how the initial picture you see during act 5 is with the whole family, until you view it and siffrin is completely alone. how the memories of the past loops are overlaying with the current one to the point where his senses are starting to become more unreliable.

during act 5 as well if you interact with any candles they smell sweet. before siffrin either didnt smell anything or it was something he didnt really know.

anyway. siffrin's own senses becoming unreliable reflecting his own deteriorating mental state is a brilliant touch to add to the horror in the story. (even without talking about how his relationship with touch is).

postgame our man absolutely would not be able to trust his sense with how the past looping affected his perception of everything around them.

I have been losing my shit over this damn panel for the past THREE DAYS (more or less) and I need to yell somewhere so it's gonna go here.

It all began when I was writing my fic (I think this was for My Immortal), and I needed to recap significant hakukai moments. And I remembered "hey, I should include this one thing saguru said during sunset manor that was stupidly super gay for no fucking reason" bc like, yea hakukai not canon, but if canon was gonna give me a whole ass confession then I might as well use it. So, like always, I head to mangadex to look for this panel... Except... It's not there... The line... The line's not there... But I remember... I remember something about "the only one to disrupt/disturb my thinking/mind"... Where... I didn't imagine that right? I mean I read a lot of google translated Chinese fanfics but... I REMEMBERED reading that line... In a manga... In English... ON mangadex...

This is where I should mentioned, that if you weren't around for the Great Collapse of Mangadex. Then... Well, so there was this period of time where mangadex just DIDNT EXIST. Bc there was some cyber?? Attack??? On the site??? I can't fully remember. But it like wiped out most of the site. The mangas r just, gone. So mangadex fixed it. It took a while bc they figured "might as well revamp our site and system". And they did. And it's great. And it looks beautiful now, even more than before.

But see. The line I remembered? Yea... Yea that was from before The Collapse. And mangadex let multiple translation groups submit their translations. So u can read diff translations of diff group, see how things are interpreted differently... And... I remembered this one, that I posted here up top, but I remembered there was another. One that had The Line.

And it was driving crazy so, like usual, I asked my cn friend. But my cn friend (why am I still saying that, it's @beingvv , that's the friend) has A Life, and isn't always online, and we love that for ppl. So. I'm still crazy. I can't trust my own damn mind and memory bc why tf do I remember something that isn't there (happened before btw, but that has nothing to do with this).

Luckily, I have a friend who knows jp. UNLUCKILY, I don't have the jp raws and it's from chapter 300 and we are in the thousands. So, I went back to losing my mind. Until I found it again, and realized. Heyyyyyyy there's a whole ass ANIME. So like the baggage my dear friend had the misfortune to be saddled with, I went to find the ep, timestamped it, yelled begged them for help.

This is where I lose my damn mind the first time in the recent weeks.

I don't know if this was a mistranslation or a misunderstanding or something, but the English translation was lacking. And I love and have always been thankful and grateful to the ppl who worked hard to translate mangas in their free time, and do it all for free, bc I haven't had any real way to rent/borrow mangas from renting shops/libraries in years. So this was one of the only ways I can read mangas. But, even as I checked the raw panel with Google lens just now, even google translate it as "the only one to make my thoughts go round." No where was there any mention of "case" and "solving." So that's just, multiple accounts of ppl who knows jp, including native jp speakers, all saying that this panel is Saguru saying "the only one to drive me crazy". And man I rly hope this doesn't make me come off as ungrateful or like shitting on the translation team, I'm rly not. But yea. Uh. The translation was wrong. And I remembered that there used to be a diff eng translation. And it led me to go to all this trouble and journey to find out what was actually said. And here we are, at the end.

The only one who could disrupt Saguru's thinking.

The only one who could disturb Saguru's mind.

The one whose sole existence drives him mad.

The only one to make his mind obsess over till he's driven to madness.

LAST NAME - what started this all and what i hope others picked up on was gojo calling geto by his last name, not his first: geto. even after everything geto did during jjk v0, gojo still calls geto 'suguru.' he's still 'suguru' to him. i wanted a scenario in which gojo would reject his first name - reject their past and their relationship. this whole comic idea sprung out of being unsatisfied with geto and gojo's canon relationship. personally, im not the happiest with how things were written in the story and feel like the author could've done some things differently. this isn't to say i don't like or enjoy what the author has written either. i just have mixed feelings.

KENJAKU - in case it wasn't clear, the door closing on page 14 depicts geto with stitches on his forehead - aka kenjaku. what that page is trying to convey is that the moment geto killed yuuta, the future where geto's body is used to box gojo ceased to exist. in this au, kenjaku's plan that we see in the canon timeline would never and will never work. by killing yuuta, geto crossed a line and permanently severed his relationship with gojo. if gojo wins here, gojo will dispose of the body properly. the panel after shows a closed door with the memory of who suguru was. the person who suguru used to be and the best years of gojo's life etc etc. but "broken" bc it's gojo truly realizing that's not who geto is anymore + the whole "severing relationship" thing. does this make sense.

what happens after the comic ends is up to interpretation though

GETO'S PLAN - i didnt focus a lot on the specifics of how this could've happened considering geto's plan changed in this au. how it happened isnt really important, you can come up with whatever you want. what i wanted to focus on, and what i hope people managed to pick up on is the situation itself - geto killing yuuta. sorry yuuta. i'll make it up to you.

i ended it here because it felt the best place, but here's some scrapped dialogue of a few seconds after: GETO: "… It was a necessary sacrifice, Sato-" GOJO: "don't you dare call me that" basically to emphasize the first name vs last name situation

GOJO N GETO - ive always felt uhhh. nitpicky, i guess. about the specifics of everything regarding gojo and geto. ive felt unsatisfied for a variety of reasons, and this was basically an idea that sprung out (a looong time ago) of a want for gojo to be angry at and feel more.. negative emotions, i guess, toward geto. i still do genuinely enjoy their canon relationship a lot tho. i enjoy the way they’re written together and individually, i just have different/multiple feelings about the same thing :)

RIKO AND YUUTA - erm there was a scrapped panel... you can find it on my blog if you're really curious but there was a panel of geto 'remembering' riko's dead body (a distorted memory, because the blood reflects yuuta's injuries). it's not necessarily that riko and yuuta are similar, it's that geto becomes a bit like toji in the end. just like toji, geto tries to kill a young teenager for the sake of his own goals. while toji's was selfish and geto's, in his own eyes, was for the greater good, there's still the similarity of killing a child. of stealing their future for their own goals. plus the fact that gojo killed both of them in a similar way.

TRUST - yeah i know the quote is in the context of the 2nd years fighting geto. still. gojo trusted geto to a large degree, despite everything he did. so. it's going here.

PG 4-6 - geto values and cares about sorcerers so so much. again, he was fine with trying to kill yuuta for his vision and all but i dont think he wouldn't feel some level of. conflicting emotions i guess. (i am very against the idea that geto wasn't... trying to kill yuuta? i don't really get that perspective at all. it'd make all of that meaningless imo. but this isn’t about that.) ok im done.

You had to remind yourself you were doing this for him. Not for you. You couldn’t be selfish. That’s all that you said to yourself as you boarded Tony’s private jet to Wakanda.

But he needed you and you waited 70 years, 19 days, 3 hours and roughly 26 minutes to find him and bring him home to you. Not that you were counting. As Steve continuously reminded you every time he said we might not find him.

Steve was frozen for 70 years and I was grieving them. When Bucky had first been drafted he told me if he died in battle he wanted me to move on, to find some nice guy and live a normal life. I agreed to appease him. I knew it would never happen.

Soon after, Bucky’s division was declared officially missing. It nearly tore my soul in half. I wasn’t eating, sleeping, or drinking for days. I couldn’t stop thinking he wasn’t dead, he couldn’t be. But at the same time I almost would rather him be dead than be a prisoner of war. At least he wouldn’t be tortured then.

And then Steve, ever the hero, our night in shining armor, brought them home. He brought HIM home. He was never the same. I don’t know what they did but it was bad. And it was in that moment I decided that I would be like Steve, invincible, and he would never hurt again. Bucky would be safe. We would protect him. I would protect him.

“It’s not too late to change your mind.”

Steve’s words threw me out of my memories. My nightmares. All of my worst thoughts of probabilities that may or may not happen.

“No. No, I have to do this. I can’t show him I loved him and trusted him if I don’t.”

Steve gave me an understanding look but it was almost concerned.

“Past tense?” He asked.

“No!” I shot back.

I looked at my feet.

“I’m afraid I love him and he’s already gone. It’s too late for him. He won’t remember. Not me. Not you. Nothing.”

I looked at Steve. I promised myself I wouldn’t cry. That I would be strong. If Steve couldn’t be, since he tends to be an emotional mess, I would be for the both of us. But this is something I don’t know if I can be strong for.

I looked out the window. We had left the city and somehow during the exchange and during my existential struggle we were quickly approaching Wakanda. And when I say quickly I mean already past the barrier.

You didn’t think much more could break you. Not after hearing Bucky not even knowing his own name, and not recognizing you or Steve and then finding out that the Russians have brainwashed him and completely destroyed him.

You didnt know what to expect but you sure as hell weren’t expecting to be led to a small hut. A prison type thing sure. He was dangerous. But not something as civil and simple and…weak…as a hut. You almost laughed. If they trusted him this much so could you.

A bunch of children suddenly ran out of the hut. It made you nervous considering it happened to be the hut that Bucky was staying in and you were about to go on the defensive for them but then you noticed they were smiling. Happy. It was odd...considering.

Shuri glanced back at you.

"It's alright." But then she paused. And it felt too long. Especially with all the children chanting, "White Wolf!" In the background. What the hell a white wolf was in their culture you had no clue.

She continued with almost a grimace.

"I'm aware of your history. He needs rest and we've given him a new socket for an arm. He's not quite ready for...certain...things."

You didn't think he would be anywhere near ready for "certain things" as Shuri had put it. You would just be happy if he remembered you shared a history and wanted to know more.

You saw his shadow in the hut entrance and you weren't sure which you were anticipating more. Actually seeing him again or speaking to an almost stranger.

He looked so different in his Wakandan clothes. SO different. And you couldn't help but practically gape at him. Drooling over the long hair and beard now that you had time to appreciate it while not trying to be killed.

He walked to you slowly. Uncertainly. He looked just as nervous as you. Which was strange you thought because wasn't he the one who was never afraid of anything? He always just dove in head first. Stubborn ass. You smirked to yourself.

You were soon inches from him. If it were the 40's again it would have been considered indecent.

He looked at you like he was staring into your soul. It was uncomfortable. But his eyes looked familiar. Not dark and cold.

You were about to break the tension with a smart ass comment about cutting through the tension with a knife but he spoke first and what he said gave you a dash of hope.

me: OKAY, so , in arcaea, its like an afterlife created by hikari (who is a god but is unaware that she is of that fact) unknowingly. its like her own world, dedicated to her one wish to just be happy. she knew she wasnt a normal kid, anf she didnt know how to be. so she wanted to escape to a place where she could feel something. now, arcaea, like i said, is meant for the dead. however, hikari decidedly isnt dead. so how did the arcaea solve this problem? they created a copy of the creator, and that copy travels the land of arcaea in her place. thats also how the other souls are transported. once their body dies, their soul is sent to a higher place and theyre copied into the world of arcaea, made out of glass and not needing basic necessities like food or drink. im not sure why they're selected, but my idea is that its based on having an unfulfilled life, like being a w anderkng soul. the arcaea takes these souls, and tries to help them find what they were looking for in their living time. if theyre successful in finding what they needed, they no longer need to be in arcaea, so they freeze. once they found their reason, their wish, they go catatonic. now, why is tairitsu different? well, her body was also copied, but her soul was never sent away. the original version of her watches over her in the void , stuck there. im not sure why, though. i think her entire existence is an anomaly. now, how do hikari and tairitsu meet? well, let me explain what happened with them. hikari , is a girl who can see and attract light memories. she only sees the happiness. tairitsu however, only sees the bad, the conflict shards. hikari is delighted , while tairitsu is disgusted. tairitsu was upset by these fragments, showing awful things to her and sticking with her. so she vowed to collect every last one and destroy them, to get rid of the bad. how heroic, yeah? no lol. you cant have good without bad, and you cant have bad without good. now, as i said before, once your wish has been fulfilled, you no longer need to be in arcaea. this happened to hikari . once she felt happy, she grew numb to the constant sensory overload of joy. pure bliss and ecstasy was just a normal tuesday. so , her existence lost meaning. she got what she wanted, right? to br happy... so. she almost became mindless, catatonic. but an anomaly shard saved her. it showed her a time where SHE was the one who was happy, smiling, instead of numb and braindead . so , it made her think. keep in mind , it has been months, maybe, since she came to. she honestly couldnt remember the last time she was genuinely happy at that point. that realization broke her. how foolish she was, to completely suck yourself into nothing but happiness to the point where you leave nothing else. to the point where nothing else truly matters, and to the point where you get poisoned and truly stop living. so, she cries. for the first time ever, she sobs out, lamenting over how stupid she truly was to just blindly trust everything around her, ask no questions, and just disappear like she never even mattered. so, with her newfound purpose, she vowed to find someone, anyone, and find a way out of arcaea .

okay i watched the premiere on call like Four times over and there's so many things to talk about but im running out of JUICE!!

teruko sort of panicking and backing down after she slips up during the trial, partly out of fear of being piled on again but ALSO because i think she really does shoulder more responsibility than she cares to admit. she actively tries to get these idiots out of their messes, she's still trying to save them, even after she's said she'd never trust them again -- sure, you could argue she just doesn't want to die either, but i have a feeling that's not the case, especially given the way she reacted during being piled on in ch1

okay are we going to casually just DROP THE BOMB THAT DAVID MAY REMEMBER/DOES REMEMBER XANDER BEFORE THE MEMORY ERASURE, MEANING HE COULD RECALL HIS PART IN THE HPA OPERATION AS WELL AS WHATEVER TERUKO COULD'VE DONE? there's so much room to guess what exactly he remembers and i really hope we get to corner and question him later on BECAUSE I NEED ANSWERS BRO

also the teruko and david confrontation. ooo i've been waiting for this baby, we've been knowing they're narrative foils, but the way teruko bares her teeth at the thought of xander being a good person in david's eyes? david's still clinging to his own idolization, while teruko's dealing with the aftermath of being betrayed and taking it HORRIBLY, and they're at opposite ends of the unhealthy coping spectrum and this is another thing i need to be continued later in ch3 interactions

david actually having a solid plan on why he 'gives up' instead of actually sabotaging for the sake of sui is so GOOD like no he should not just kill everyone and assume that's what xander would've wanted when xander was pretty much doing the opposite in trying to kill teruko to SAVE everyone else, but it's not like david knows that, now does he? or so it seems... (also david's reasoning reminds me of goro not accepting the false reality but that's p5r not drdt)
