Now that Ghibli's new movie is coming out soon, I've been thinking about anime films and wanna talk about my favorite animated movie ever, Tokyo Godfathers.
Tumblr media
TG is a 2003 tragicomedy by Satoshi Kon, following three unhoused peopleā€“ā€“an alcoholic, a runaway girl, an a trans womanā€“ā€“who find a baby in a dumpster and set off across Tokyo to reunite her with her parents.
If you like the sound of that, go watch it because the rest of this post is spoilers and I have FEELINGS about this movie.
URGHH, the fact that only two moments of true kindness, generosity, and care given to the three protagonists without any expectation of reciprocity are given by a Latin-American immigrant couple and a drag club full of queens and trans women. The fact that, despite her loud and dramatic personality, Hana is the glue that holds the team together and the heart of the whole movie. The fact that this movie pulls no punches at showing the violence and inhumanity committed by "civilized Japanese society" against the unhoused. The fact that Miyuki craves to be loved by her parents and ends up seeing Hana as her true mother. The fact that Miyuki starts off accidentally using transphobic language against Hana, but slowly begins calling her "Miss Hana" out of respect. The fact that, according to Kon, Hana's role in the story is as a mythological trickster god and "disturb the morality and order of society, but also play a role in revitalizing culture." The fact that Hana so desperately wants to be part of a true family, yet is willing to sacrifice her found family so they can be with their own, and is rewarded for her good deeds in the end by becoming a godmother. The fact that, throughout the movie, wind and light have been used to signify the presence of god's hand/influence (this movie's about nondenominational faithā€“ā€“faith in yourself, faith in others, faith in a higher power. Lots of religious are referenced, such as Buddhism/Hinduism, Christianity, and Shintoism), and in the climax of the film, as Hana jumps off a building to save a baby that isn't hers, a gust of wind and a shower of light save her from death. The fact that god saves a trans woman's life because she proved herself a mother, and that shit makes me CRY.

My piece for the @trafficzine 5th edition! It was such an honor to have my piece alongside so many other amazing artists in this fandom, and it's especially special since Secret Life was the first life series I watched!
I'm so proud of this piece, the mounders have my whole heart... See if you can name all the little mounders moments I put in the panels :]
Alternate versions and sketches below the cut!
Top two are sketches from when I was laying out how I wanted the final thing to look like, bottom left was the first draft of the piece until I decided I wanted more little references to other Mounder's moments across the piece, I still love it; and bottom right is the lined version of it when I was still struggling with color and figuring out how the sparkly parts were meant to look.

I feel like something that should have been explored more in Arcane is that despite the dangers and pretty much horrific conditions, Zaun children seemingly grow up a lot more caring and have a larger understanding of family in comparison to Piltover children. And if such a reflection of the real world in a sense.
The kids of Zaun seemingly grow up with a lot more adult support. Ekko is easily welcomed under Benzoā€™s wings. Vander adopts 4 kids (two of which we learn he knew of before their parents death, two of which we canā€™t be sure of). Silco, despite all what happened, and his ulterior motives, shows no problem adopting Powder/Jinx. In the alternate universe it seems as though heā€™s still played a part in the kids lives. Jinx adopts Isha easily and Sevika cares for her as well. Hell, even Mr. War Crimes Against Humanity does well with little Viktor (until ya know, the animal abuse).
Hell, up until Vander dies (the first time) there seems to be a large understanding of if thereā€™s an orphan or a kid in need of guidance, take them in! (And certainly donā€™t inform them of your plans to turn a giant pink salamander into drugs and be confused when a nine year old doesnā€™t understand). If a kid wants to be your apprentice, let them! For the most part, until things all went wrong in the end of act 1 of season 1, the worst parts of Zaun seem pretty typical for any city in poverty.
Match that with what we see with how Caitlyn and Jayce grow up. Caitlyn is given adult support, yes, and itā€™s clearly a good adult mentor, but itā€™s not entirely by her choice. Itā€™s been chosen for her. Sheā€™s safe, but thereā€™s a lack of freedom of choice. Meanwhile, when Jayce gets older, and that same accident in Act 1 happens, the family that supported him and his mom turns their backs. His own mom doesnā€™t support him either, because sheā€™s afraid of what heā€™s talking about, but also because heā€™s damming them to being outcasts.
Conversely, Vander is more than willing to take the fall for what Claggor, Milo, Vi and Powder did. Heā€™s willing to go to prison for a long time, in order for them to have a better future. Despite Viā€™s best efforts, heā€™s not going to listen to her (she is just a kid) and heā€™s not letting his family go down and get hurt.
Meanwhile, a man who grew up in this mentality, where thereā€™s a wide sense of family support from people who arenā€™t your biological family, is the one to go to Jayce, a stranger, and tells him he believes in him. Itā€™s why itā€™s such a shock to Jayce; his own family and family friends denied him. They didnā€™t support him.
I think thatā€™s what makes all the difference. Piltover and Zaun have wildly different understandings of family and forgiveness. For Piltover, it shuns and damns the lives of those who upset the balance. For Zaun, it provides safety and never ending understanding.
Just. Iā€™m thinking.

Perfection
Mammon was far from perfect. He struggled with keeping his grades up. He found it near impossible to save the money he earned. He couldnā€™t control the impulses to pocket things that werenā€™t his. It was all part of who he was.
He was painfully aware of it too. His brothers would never let him forget about each and everyone one of the flaws. They remind him at minimum once a day about how scummy he was, or how much of a burden he was on the household. His mind became an echo chamber, reflecting back everything heā€™d been told at any given point during the day. It grew more and more difficult by the day to parade around with a grin plastered on his face.
But with you, it was like all of that went out the window. You made him feel special. Loved. Wanted. He knew his brothers cared, probably, but it was different with you. He never had to worry about you saying something demeaning to him, or talking about him behind his back. With you, he could be himself. He felt like he could admit his mistakes to you without the fear of being verbally assaulted. He knew youā€™d help him without any backstabbing or insults. All because you loved him.
The phrase you liked to use was ā€œWeā€™re only human after all.ā€ While heā€™d been essentially everything but a human, he saw the meaning behind it. To be human is to err. He wasnā€™t, but being immortal meant you were bound to make mistakes once or hundreds of times. He didnā€™t need to be flawless. It was alright to stumble sometimes. Being himself was enough. You would be there to help pick him back up anyways, no matter what.
You loved him for who he was. Not for what he once was, or what he could be. You saw the real Mammon, and thatā€™s more than he could ask for. But you went beyond that. You treated the real him like gold, and was by his side when he needed it most. To you, he was perfect, and thatā€™s all he could ever hope to be.
So when you barged into his room, demanding cuddles, or when dragged you him out shopping with you, he never once complained. He wore his imperfections and his heart on the same sleeve; the very same one you always tugged on when you wanted his affection. There was a reason he called you his treasure, after all.
