Digital illustrators, I need your advice!

My wonderful ko-fi supporters helped me to reach my goal of getting my super fancy earplugs and my next goal is a tablet on which I can design fanart on Illustrator which can be cut by my wood supplier or by me for t-shirts.

I’m looking for recommendations for an affordable tablet & stylus combo that will run Illustrator. Bonus if it comes with it pre-loaded for any reason, obviously.

Money (ie: cost) is the main issue, as I have NONE. It’s for trying to add a new facet to my small business to keep it from going under.

Any recommendations would be hugely appreciated!

On Voting in America

So one of the most profound comments on routine chores that I've ever encountered was, hilariously, the Pickle Rick episode of "Rick & Morty," where (after a lot of shenanigans have already ensued) this therapist absolutely lays Rick out:

"I have no doubt that you would be bored senseless by therapy, the same way I'm bored when I brush my teeth and wipe my ass. Because the thing about repairing, maintaining, and cleaning is: it's not an adventure. There's no way to do it so wrong you might die. It's just work. And the bottom line is some people are okay going to work and some people, well, some people would rather die. Each of us gets to choose."

I think about this at least once a week — usually while I'm doing my laundry or sweeping or some other task that needs doing and won't get me anything more than clean clothing or a dog-hair-free floor. There's no Pulitzer for wiping down your microwave or scrubbing your toilet; no one's awarding you for getting all the dishes out of the sink. At best you have the satisfaction of crossing it off your list.

Voting is very much the same (and I'm talking about the US here, as an American). Sure, you sometimes get a sticker; but nobody's going to cheer for you. There's no adventure here, no potential for anything more than crossing something off of a list. It's a chore, something that needs doing in order to repair, maintain, and yes even clean. So I get why people don't like doing it.

And I've decided I don't give a shit.

Do it anyway. Your country takes astonishingly little from you — taxes, the once-in-a-blue-moon jury duty, and a theoretical draft that hasn't been used in over half a century and likely will never be again — but it asks you (asks! not requires! not demands!) to vote once or twice a year. It's not always easy; especially in conservative states, the impediments to vote can be ridiculous. But it is once a year and unlike in our nation's all-too-recent past, you will not die if you do it.

In fact, the worst outcome from voting these days is that the person or issue that you vote for loses — but you won't know if they lose until after the election. Polls are less accurate now, for a whole host of reasons; you cannot know until after the election who or what will win. This makes your vote more valuable than possibly ever before.

Use that power. Not because it's exciting or even rewarding, but because your vote is what keeps our country's metaphorical teeth from falling out and our metaphorical ass from stinking.

Brush, wipe, vote.

okay but can we PLEASE allow crowley to have emotions? can we let him be angry, upset, bitter, frustrated, and NOT immediately want to forgive aziraphale? can we let him be a complex being with complex emotions and trauma who is allowed to be heartbroken over aziraphale choosing heaven instead of him?

yes, they love each other. yes, they both hurt each other in that final argument. yes, neither of them is completely wrong or right.

for six thousand years, crowley has done *everything* to accommodate aziraphale. he has swallowed his emotions, crossed his own boundaries, tried again and again to get aziraphale to listen to him so he can finally make him understand how the fall changed him and how deeply fucked up the entire heaven/hell system is. it is why i cannot see the apology dance seen as "cute" or "romantic" because it's crowley once again ignoring his emotions to save aziraphale from heaven and himself; he did NOTHING wrong! aziraphale should be the one apologizing, not crowley.

and while yes, aziraphale has been on his own journey and is struggling with his own trauma, he needs to start putting crowley before his personal comfort. he needs to stop expecting crowley to throw his feelings in the wind and come crawling back to him with an apology on his lips.

the final argument was crowley saying he's DONE doing that. he's done meeting aziraphale on his side, either they'll meet in the middle or not at all - and rightfully so. aziraphale hasn't been listening to him this season, he never has.

do you really think if crowley had given him the details of the trial in heaven, gabriel's trial, anything at all that aziraphale would have believed him? no! he wouldn't have! his entire schtick is finding increasingly insane explanations for the shit heaven pulls so it doesn't contradict his personal view of it.

their relationship has never been healthy, unconditional love is NOT healthy or good. it's simply not. crowley is allowed to have hard boundaries and conditions, he's allowed to not forgive him immediately (or at all, although we all know he eventually will). aziraphale is ALSO allowed to be upset. i know that we all want them to be together and happy, but trauma recovery and personal growth aren't that simple. they're both more than the relationship they have with each other.

I think there ought to be a seminar you can attend that's about how to be financially/medically secure, when you were brought up thinking you were gonna have a spouse and kids to help support you when you got old, but it looks like that's probably not going happen...

I'm currently working on an animation project starring the lovely smiley choo-choo man himself, Emmet! I don't want to share more since I'd like it to be a surprise, but I'm looking forward to pushing myself to learn After Effects while doing this.

However, still being an art noob of sorts here, I am feeling some indecision about how to do things, lol. Mainly, I am trying to figure out what kind of placement/composition to go for...I'm horribly indecisive, so an outside opinion from more seasoned artists than me would be wonderful!

I suppose I will have to spill some beans on what I'm planning here: I want to make flowers bloom onto the trees as Emmet's expression changes. I'm stuck on whether I want to put more attention on his face or the trees (i.e., should Emmet be the focus and ergo, bigger...or smaller as we want to focus on the trees?). I also don't know if his placement looks awkward or not (following the rule of thirds or something idk???).

I'm leaning toward making his face the focus, but I would like to hear what others have to say! Thank you!!

Hello! Autistic (art) teacher of Autistic+ADHD kid here!

So I have an AuDHD 6th grader (so like 9-10 years old) and his classmates infantilize him a fucking lot. His current monitor is also really annoying, she stops him from doing vocal stimming and chewing things, which are extremely fucking harmless. Like, I’m grateful that she stops him from taking things from other people, that she reminds him to continue with work and that she keeps him from running away, but I would be even more greatful if she only did those things.

My student is definitely HSN, with limited speech (speaking in short concise statements, normally single word statements), a fixation with use of his iPad (probably bc ADHD, I do that too to a lesser extent), and, as I mentioned, a tendency to take things that don’t belong to him and to run away. He also is literate, he writes quite a bit.

Anyways, how do I get his classmates to stop infantilizing, condescending, dehumanizing and barking condescending orders to him?

Would I even be able to make it so the monitor lets him be autistic in peace?

Should I stop worrying about it?

Like, I’m his art teacher, I see him two days a week for an hour each. What the fuck am I gonna achieve?

I don’t know what to do. And I know that if I research this or ask questions to other teachers I’m gonna get advice on how to “deal with” the autistic kid, because that’s what they always do because deep down they know they hate us and only see us as an issue to fix rather than fully fledged human beings that deserve to be treated with respect and dignity and not talked to like a fucking dog.

I just don’t want him to go through a worse version of what I went though. Like, I could at least talk and my stims were small and I didn’t run away as much and I still got infantilized a lot by my peers and teachers. I can’t imagine what he goes through in the daily.
