so i figure there are like five main types of pre-90s gay jokes based on reading stuff about homoeroticism in film/tv and also watching things in general:
1 - it's funny because it's absurd. dude making the joke is very masculine, there's no doubt as to his virility and manliness and heterosexuality, the punchline comes from the juxtaposition of effeminacy with masculinity, the laughter is safe because we know it's not true. you see this a lot in masculine genres like war movies.
2 - self deprecation. it's funny because it's a joke at the teller's own expense, he's not particularly masculine and he's highlighting this through sexuality jokes, to make fun of himself. in some way he's failed to live up to the standard of masculinity, and this is equated with homosexuality. everyone has a good laugh because they know it's just a joke, and often they can relate because most men fail to live up to at least some masculine standards. Jack Benny's an example I've seen cited a lot, though idk first hand.
3 - homoerotic male duos. it's funny because it's an exaggeration of a presumed platonic friendship, or maybe power dynamic. the first and second types may also factor in, but don't necessarily have to. this isn't all homoeroticism between friends, this is just referring to the jokes that lampshade it. couples jokes, one in drag playing a wife, etc. jerry lewis and dean martin are probably a good example, and starsky and hutch fit here.
4 - full on straightforward mockery. insults, brief appearances by people playing effete stereotypes for the sole purpose of making the audience laugh, etc. deprecation of others. the most common, probably
5 - the bugs bunny factor. it's not self deprecating, and it's not a juxtaposition to some 'real' masculinity underneath - it's a point of pride and triumph. this is where seducing your enemy to own him comes in. it's funny because it's subversive. it's not self-mockery, it's a mockery of social norms and authority through embodying their opposite. it's probably rooted in anarchic comedy? maybe burlesque before that, but i think most of these can probably be traced to burlesque, idk i need to read more on that. anyway this is the best kind and it's mainly where hawkeye fits.
i guess there's a bonus 6 too - sly allusions and double entendres only people in the know were expected to get. idk if that quite counts as a main(stream) type of joke, but it's probably worth mentioning.

idk why it gets to me when people say that hawkeye and trapper were ''basically the same person''. i mean yeah i get it they're tweedle dee and tweedle dum and they share the same brain cell, but they weren't ever the same character
there's differences between them, a lot of them subtle but differences all the same. trapper can bring out the soft caring dad energy and adores kids, meanwhile hawkeye is more of a wine aunt who brings all the good presents every time he visits. trapper can be fiercely protective of his friends/lovers/patients, a fierceness that nearly made him kill a man over his patient dying. he's a lot less touchy feely than hawkeye and tends to keep his emotions to himself until they spill over
hawkeye is an open book compared to trapper, how many times have we seen him cry and breakdown? he agonizes over things and wears himself down to the point that they need to sedate him. he's also very protective over the people he loves and cares about but when they leave they take a part with him. he's usually always the one to initiate a prank or to take a stand on something he believes in, trapper usually goes along with it but the ring leader is usually always hawkeye
not to mention the big differences like how trapper has a wife and kids back home waiting for him, he's got more at stake, more reasons to get out of that hell hole. I could list more but this post would end up too long so just add your favorite differences in the tags if you want

Get to know me tag game!
Tagged by @kitkatt0430 thanks for the tag <3<3<3
1. Do you make your bed?
Nope. I dropped making my bed as soon as my mom moved out. Maybe even before that. I sleep on two blankets and under a blanket. It’s just easier. And I toss a lot in my sleep and shits were always on the floor in the morning anyway. So I just stopped wasting my time and energy on making bed
2. Favorite number?
I consider 666 and 13 lucky ones. And have a soft spot for 6 and 9
3. What’s your job?
Post office. Night shifts. Salary sucks but it’s like two steps from my apartment and I spend most of the shift alone there
4. If you could go back to school would you?
Honestly? No. I’m too anxious to go back to learning. I dropped out the first time around. And I don’t really have passion for any subject to put myself through this kind of struggle. If I ever find something worth it maybe, but for now no
5. Can you parallel park?
Nope, I’ve never learned how to drive
6. Do you think aliens are real?
I don’t have a strong opinion. But with the size of the Universe? I thinks that’s quite a possibility
7. Can you drive a manual car?
Nope, I’ve never learned how to drive
8. What’s your guilty pleasure?
Hmm, Catwoman (2004) and other movies/shows I love but they are considered bad. And yeah, I know that catwoman is bad. But Halle Berry is so beautiful! And I have working eyes! (A Beginner's Guide to Endings on the other hand rated like 6 on imdb. I? I unironically think it’s a masterpiece)
9. Tattoos?
Yep! I have four for now: snake biting its tail on my right ankle (it goes around the ankle like a bracelet);  flying crow on my right hand below the elbow; mass effect inspired geth crawling on my left shoulder and lightning and snowflakes (if you’re thinking it was inspired by ship you are right) all over my left hand below the elbow. Lightning goes on my palm and point finger. If I have more ‘spare’ money… I’ll get some more. I have ideas and places.
10. Favorite color?
Purple since I fell in love with hawkeye. And it was black for the most of my life. I still love black.
11. Favorite type of music?
Rock. Or metal? Or hard rock? I never thought too much about the types. So lets say rock. All the rock
12. Do you like puzzles?
Kinda? I like them but they are usually very hard for me to solve. And I hate feeling stupid. I like idea but rarely try to really solve them
13. Any phobia?
Insectophobia. I can’t even go near some bugs. Just nope. I once almost jumped under the car to avoid a bug
14. Favorite childhood sport?
Badminton. We never played by any rules. Just ‘do everything you can to keep the shuttlecock in the air’. And I was good at it. At school we once played with tennis rackets for almost two hours. Good times
15. Do you talk to your self?
All the time xD Sometimes aloud. “You are a strong capable woman you CAN STOP READING AND FINISH THIS” can be heard every shift from me to me. Luckily I’m the only one hearing this xD
16. What movies do you adore?
Wrath of Man and Pacific Rim and all Resident Evil movies (with Milla Jovovich) and 10 Things I Hate About You and Bring It On and MASH and From Dusk Till Dawn are my comfort movies/shows. I love the Critters trilogy. I love the new Star Trek trilogy. Nightmare on Elm Street (old ones). The Gentlemen. Old Guard. Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV (I rewatched it like four times in a row). The Suicide Squad. The Boondock Saints. Ten Inch Hero. Drive Angry… Well. Like. I have weird taste in movies I guess? (I’ve mentioned only movies I saw more than 5 times)
17. Coffee or tea?
Coffee. I can't find balance with tea. It’s either tasteless or makes me sick because it’s too strong. Coffee I can drink non stop. Hot and cold, instant and beans. I love the bitter taste of coffee.
18. First thing you wanted to be growing up
Veterinarian, I think. I always loved animals and thought that being the one to heal them is the best career ever
Tagging (no pressure): @holycafe, @nixie-deangel, @luna-shimizu, @bedalk, @madsteacup, @mommalosthermind, @eaion, @thing2dani and whoever feels like participating :3

tagged by my friend maddie @leonardcohenofficial to answer these 20 Qs for fic writers!! yay thank you :-) i'll tag @fieryphrazes @stupidredsuspenders @ghostpunkrock if you'd like!
How many works do you have on Ao3? 26, they tell me
What's your total Ao3 word count? 400,467. oh my
What fandoms do you write for? mash of course but i also have a couple of star wars things including the time travel fic that i promise will get done eventually
What are your top five fics by kudos? or, the children's crusade, maple syrup, breathe fresh air ever after, hawkeye, why hawkeye, i now pronounce you pierce and hunnicutt
Do you respond to comments? i really try to even if it takes 100 years
What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? hmmm. i really rarely don't write a happy ending but maybe breathe fresh air ever after aka the one where daniel pierce watches "the interview." the truman show AU and the one where it's all a dream also are both kind of bleak
What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? all the long ones with a bj goes to maine element i think are kind of equally happy so maple syrup, hyh, but also you deserve the best, the hawkmarg friendship inspired fic that was the first mash fic idea i ever had
Do you get hate on fics? not to my face tho i sometimes wonder if mutuals in law have me blocked bc of any perceived bad takes in my writing
Do you write smut? If so, what kind? not habitually, but ive written some in my opinion narratively relevant sex scenes lol
Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written? closest i've come is incorporating elements of the catch-22 universe into mash stuff, and i have a broader outline for a real mash-22 crossover that i'd like to actually write one day
Have you ever had a fic stolen? ok funny yeah i was just telling della about this but like. not word for word like copy pasted but i was reading a hawkeye margaret friendship fic a while ago and was really enjoying it and then realized it was beat for beat copying my hawkmarg bestfriends fic 😭 right down to including references to the communist manifesto
Have you ever had a fic translated? i don't believe so but that would be cool!
Have you ever co-written a fic before? not really, i've thrown ideas around with people especially like with noirhawk stuff but it never really coalesced
What’s your all time favorite ship? i don't knowwwww. when i was a teenager the doctor/rose was literally so important to me and honestly i was surprised at how much i cried at doomsday upon rewatch. i possibly care more about the hawkeye/margaret friendship dynamic than i do about beejhawk
What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? ooh my idea for a mash tv show/movie crossover which i have some good dialogue written for and would love to be able to bring to fruition but i just dont think it's gonna happen
What are your writing strengths? i think dialogue for sure, and when it comes to fic in particular (like as opposed to my original writing) i think i'm good at character studies/keeping things very realistic and in character
What are your writing weaknesses? bc when i write as a hobby i write mostly plays, i sometimes catch myself writing prose like that, like just dialogue and what amounts to stage directions. i have to make myself think about when some internal monologue might be good, how to make things actually sound good instead of just being practical
Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? you guys know i love to throw lots of yiddish in there. i wouldn't be able to write real dialogue in another language unless the character had an eighth grade level spanish education or was trying to say "the farmer is my friend" in latin
First fandom you wrote for? star wars 👍
Favorite fic you’ve written? ough hard to choose. i have to shout out mind field bc i somehow haven't mentioned it yet and the experience of writing it was so surreal and was just genuinely me trying to convey how it had felt to be in my brain for a year or so through projecting onto hawkeye. and the fact that everyone liked it was bonus. BUT my actually favorite might be with friends like these, who needs enemies?, my hawkeye/margaret slow burn friendship fic and margaret deep dive. i want to make everyone read it and care about them as much as i do mwah

Until the mentioned Spider-Teen finds a way to save everyone by latching onto an Infinity stone and get's sent to an entirely different universe as Thanos snaps his fingers a second time. Some in different ways than others. Family is lost and found as is love. Who doesn't love a good Jason Todd x Peter Parker fic? I know I eat them up so I hope you do the same with this one. Get Gud. Fullmetal Alchemist Fic Recs
This list will include all ratings and tags, so read at your own discretion! :)
"Huh — it finally came out. 'S been long enough. It's been loose since I had just turned thirteen."
milk teeth (children at war are not children at all) by candiedsage - Rated G
Ed still has baby teeth. It comes as a brutal reminder.
Back Up by ohmytheon - Rated G
Ed doesn't like to admit it when other higher-ranked soldiers harass him, but it's hard to hide things from the Hawk's Eye.
what the water gave me by Spineless - Rated T
One rainy day after a mission, Ed's automail gets infected and gives him strife. Luckily, he is surrounded by many exasperated people who care deeply for him. Sickfic, Hurt/Comfort
Don't Ask Questions by Moonlight_Hearts - Rated G
He left the town for the first time when Mom died. He didn’t know what he was doing, and he didn’t know where to go. He tracked through shaded alleys and talked with the people Mom always told him to avoid.
Or: Ed knows shady people and the people around him are more than concerned
I climb the heights (I tear them down) by Starrie_Wolf - Rated T
The year Ed returned to Amestris, the Drachman Tsar decided to send an ambassador to Briggs for peace talks.
Peace was not what they had in mind.
Natura Umbilicus by liketolaugh - Rated T
People always assume that because Ed isn't religious, he doesn't believe in a higher power. He supposes it's a fair assumption, because that's how it goes with most alchemists; scientific minds don't usually like the wishy-washy nature of miracles and faith and unseen beings. They believe in atoms and molecules and the ever-elusive natural providence.
But Ed does believe in a higher power; he's met it, and its name is equivalent exchange. Nothing wishy-washy about that.
Spoon Theory by liketolaugh - Rated T
“People always talk about how bad the surgery is,” Ed told Hawkeye, “but you never hear people mention how much it sucks to have fifty pounds of metal hanging off your body. Bolts in your bones.”
“What’s happening?” Mustang asked sharply, turning toward them with his clouded eyes still lingering a few feet over their heads. “Hawkeye? What’s Fullmetal doing? Is there something wrong with his automail?”
Ed flicked the lighter again, waited a little more patiently this time, and inhaled. Then he gave Hawkeye a nod, giving in to the inevitable. The only reason Mustang hadn’t figured it out already was probably because Ed didn’t do a lot of... this sort of thing. The comfort thing. Mustang liked people to play into his expectations.
“Edward came out to smoke opium,” Hawkeye said at last. “He says it helps with the pain from his automail.”
Compressive Strength by liketolaugh - Rated T
Though only a distant second to the surgery itself, automail repair is still one of the most painful medical procedures available. Metal yanks on raw nerves. Steel bolts grind against bones. Electric shocks spark around the connection points. And it can last for hours.
Ed can deal with all of that. But he really wishes he didn't have to argue with his best friend at the same time.
Early is On Time. On Time is Late. Late is Unacceptable by boredom - Rated G
Every state alchemist must get rectified each year. They can present their research. Give a demonstration. Or participate in mock combat. Whatever they choose, they have to show up on time and ready to wow, or else they get stripped of their title.
Mustang thought Ed knew about this. He thought Ed would take this seriously and show up on time for once in his life. But, as he sits in a room with an asshole major general to his left and a ticking clock in front of him, he starts to wonder just how seriously Ed takes this whole military thing.
Has Ed disappeared just to piss him off? Or is there something else at play?
Be Kind, Rewind by icewhisper - Rated T
Maes Hughes died on a Tuesday night. When Roy woke up the next day, it was Tuesday morning. It kept being Tuesday morning.
A Professor Not So Short by Areum113 - Rated T
After the Promised Day, many names from the military made it to the news. Some notable ones like the Flame Alchemist Roy Mustang stayed there as he rose through the ranks and moved to Central, the famous Fullmetal Alchemist disappeared.
It was unexpected, to say the least, when Agnese looked at the list of her professors and saw the name Edward Elric.
Son of the Desert by ShanaStoryteller - Rated T
Every time Edward sees the circle on the back Mustang's hand, he wants to scream, wants to reach across the desk and shake him, wants to wrap his hands around the older man's throat and ask if it was worth it, if this desk and his rank is worth the screaming, crying, writhing, burning bodies of his people -
"Something to say, Fullmetal?" Mustang drawls.
Edward snaps the file shut, "Nope."
Know the Difference by ShanaStoryteller - Rated T
“You’ve heard the rumors,” Mustang says, looking at Ed over the top of his latest report, “about the angels.”
Ed scoffs and rolls his eyes, “Angels don’t exist, don’t be ridiculous.”
“Of course, of course,” he murmurs, gaze sliding back down, “There have been multiple eye witness accounts, however.”
Ed slouches into the chair and doesn’t bother to keep the contempt to from his voice when he says, “Don’t depend on anything with wings to save you. Things that were made to leave always end up doing so, in the end.”
“Yes, well,” he says, “sometimes they come back.”
Self-Conscious by JRaylin441 - Rated T
Maes is having a terrible day. And then Ed shows up.
There were reports there, from the language specialists they had called in, all saying the same thing. It was impossible. It couldn’t be done. They had tried their best, but it was like nothing they had ever seen before.
Achey Days by McSquishee - Rated T
Aside from Mustang and Hawkeye, team Mustang is unaware of Edward's automail limbs. When a particularly dreary day leaves his ports aching, he tries to hide his pain from the team in fear of pity or judgement. How will they react when his secret finally gets out? familial team mustang with hints of EdWin if you squint

Clint Barton and Midoriya Izuku deserve good things, and here’s why.
Look, I may have an agenda in saying this but in Marvel x MHA crossovers I fully believe Clint Barton and/or Kate Bishop should get to interact with Midoriya at any opportunity, because there is so much narrative potential! (But especially Clint because he’s my favorite. Did I mention I might have an agenda?) Have them interact please, I am begging you! Even if it’s just for one scene and has no real influence on the plot, or if it’s just Midoriya finding out about Hawkeye's existence and getting excited! Midoriya deserves to have quirkless role models, okay!? (The same goes for Iron Man and other characters who rely on their skills and intellect, but I am the Ultimate Hawkeye Fangirl, alright?)
If you took these characters and stayed true to their canon personalities (or as true as you can with Marvel comic continuities), had these two characters meet, and wrote out a scene with them in it, both characters could benefit from each other and would have a good relationship if their canon characters ever got to interact. Conversely, if you tweaked their characters a bit or just one of those characters or went with a different canon version of one of those characters they would make excellent foils to each other. They have a lot in common, and there’s so much untapped potential between these two. So much untapped potential there are like five fics on Ao3 tagged as the two of them having an interaction significant enough to be worth tagging. FIVE.
Disclaimer, I believe you can and should write whatever you want for the most part, opinions be damned, but some of the phrasing I use in this post may seem like I’m trying to dictate how others should write MHA x Marvel crossovers. Please understand I am not trying to sound like an asshole, I am just very autistic about both these pieces of media and I express my opinions in very specific language.
I’m going to focus on Clint for the purposes of this rant because… look at my icon for Christ’s sake. Plus, I may or may not have an agenda. Well, okay, the actual reason is that I think Clint and Midoriya interactions have more potential than Kate and Midoriya, but it’s like comparing the value of platinum to gold. Both are extremely valuable, but one is more valuable than the other. Now, please, allow me to explain. (Significant word vomit incoming, 4700+ words, there are footnotes at the end plus a TL;DR.)
Look, Clint is literally just a guy who works his ass off. Sure, he’s a super-talented marksman but that talent would be meaningless if he didn’t constantly work for it! Midoriya and Hawkeye are both surrounded by people with extraordinary/supernatural abilities for significant parts of their stories even if Midoriya does get superpowers. Both of them get to where they are in their stories through sheer determination and hard work, even if it was for wildly different purposes. This applies even more so in fics where Midoriya stays quirkless! They are the powerless heroes in worlds filled with heroes who have powers! Characters like Black Widow, Iron Man, Ant-Man, and Falcon are way closer to having powers than Hawkeye. Widow was enhanced by the Red Room program, Iron Man and Ant-Man are defined by their gear, and Falcon... it changes from media to media. Sometimes he has a psychic connection to an actual falcon named Redwing, other times his gear is a lot more advanced, and sometimes both. Iron Man has infected himself with nanites to gain a form of technopathy in multiple stories! (1) Hell, Spider-Man was originally Marvel’s “Everyman” character but Clint sniped that title right out from under him. Few things highlight how defining Normalcy is for Clint better than the opening panels from Hawkeye 2012 Issue #1 (also I will take any and every excuse to promo Matt Faction and David Aja’s Hawkeye it’s just so good.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
No matter what, Hawkeye has always been the normal guy on a roster of people with superpowers, super-intellect, fancy weaponry, and magic, and I love it! Ironically, that’s what makes him and Kate stand out, their normalcy.
Side note, have you ever fired a bow? I have. (Did I mention I have autism and am obsessed with Clint?) It’s fucking hard. Forget aiming and hitting your target, have you considered repeatedly pulling back and holding the bow steady for an entire battle? Ouch ouch owie owie ow, my fucking muscles. The human body was not designed to handle that kind of constant repetitive motion, Clint and Kate have arm muscles for days, not to mention the dedication it takes to have aim that good. Aiming with a bow is hard. Sometimes Clint is depicted as being such an excellent marksman he uses the bow and arrow specifically to flex how good his aim is. There are other reasons  (Versatility of trick arrows, non-lethality, having been an archer since he was very, very young) but this is objectively the funniest one. He’s also used coins and pebbles when he needs to make a shot that an arrow is unsuited for or when he doesn’t have his bow, i.e. in his civvies.
In fact, Hawkeye (2012) focuses almost exclusively on what Clint gets up to when he’s not superheroing. In the first issue, Clint gets out of the hospital and heads to his apartment. Clint can afford the rent jacks because of his Avengers and Shield pay, his neighbors cannot. We are explicitly shown the landlord mafioso Ivan evicting a single mother of two after tripling her rent. (2) We are shown Clint witnessing this. He knows that neighbor and she trusts him enough to have him double-check the lease to make sure that what the landlord is doing is legal. (It is.) Clint cares about his neighbors, enough that he regularly attends the semi-potluck grill night they have on the roof of the building. In fact, he doesn’t regularly eat except when he’s with the Avengers or on potluck night. So what does he do?
He puts on a cheap suit and tie, heads over to an underground casino, and he gives a slice of pizza to a dog on the street. This dog belongs to the guards of the underground casino. He convinces them to let him in and he hunts down the landlord. He drops a duffle bag and gives the mafia a shit-ton of money in a duffle bag to pay rent for all of his neighbors tax-free. The mafia refuse the deal because they are jacking up the rent so they can evict people for not paying rent on time. This is because they want to sell the building. Clint then beats up the mafia until they accept the money. (3)  Well, okay, not exactly. The mafia attack him first, but Clint uses a playing card as a projectile to disorient one of the guards with a gun, and room devolves into chaos.
Clint gets thrown out the front window of the laundromat and runs for his life. As the outer guards fire on Clint, the dog he gave pizza attacks them for it. They then throw the dog into traffic and he turns around to beat the shit out of them because, and I quote “What kinda man throws a dog into traffic? *punches sunglasses off of tracksuit Mafioso* Seriously I ask you.” Clint takes a Nickle out of his pocket and throws it with enough force to shatter the door windows of the car that’s about to hit the dog in a desperate attempt to get the driver to swerve. The dog still gets hit.
Oh yeah, allow me to introduce you to Hawkeye 2012 Issue #1 page 4.
Tumblr media
Unrelated note, Faction and Aja do a masterful job of storytelling in issue 1. The story is told out of order, but the proper context is given at the perfect moments so you can easily piece the story together, most of the flashbacks and flash-forwards are one-page long, when they aren’t things from one time period seamlessly blend with another, and the entire color pallet changes to signify what point in the timeline the panels are occurring... and that’s only issue 1! I am refraining from doing a keyboard smash here, as that is the only thing that can properly convey how much I love Hawkeye 2012.
Anyways, he takes the dog to the vet, and the tracksuit mafia show back up while he’s in the waiting room. He once again rocks their shit, and they take it outside. (4) We cut to Ivan sitting in a cab while Clint is outside. It’s raining. Ivan has a handkerchief to his bloody nose and- actually, I don’t think a cliff-notes does this justice. I’ll transcribe the dialogue below here because my attempts to do a scan of the page came out poorly and I’m unsure if there’s a high-quality scan online, just know you’re missing some of the pacing of the scene.
Ivan: “Bro, what kind of Avenger does this? I broke no laws, bro. Allowed to raise rents. Is touch luck for you and your friends but I know my rights.”
Clint: “Hold that thought, ya Tracksuit Dracula. You asked about the Avengers. Y’wanna know the best part about being an Avenger? having Captain America around you all the time He just-- the guy brings out the best in people. You... want to be good when he’s around. You really do.”
Ivan, Look around you real quick. Because, right now? Captain America ain’t here. I’m going to pay you everything everyone in that building owes you and another 12.5 for the building outright. And that’s it. Negotiations’re over. You wanted to sell it? I want to buy it. I take care of my people and you get rich. The end.”
Ivan: “I had buyer.”
Clint: “I don’t care.”
He turns to the cab driver, hands him a wad of cash, and tells him to take Ivan to JFK. Fast. The vet tech calls Clint back inside. The dog has a broken pelvis, broken leg, two broken ribs, and lost an eye, but will recover fairly well with proper care and rest. Clint pets the dog while he’s laying on the table after surgery. Clint keeps the dog after this. The name on the collar says “Arrow,” but Clint decides to come up with something better.
Tumblr media
This whole story is really just Clint trying to do the right thing as best he can. At first, he’s just going for the first solution to the problem that he thinks of, but he adapts once Ivan turns him down. He saves Lucky because A. he likes dogs. and B. the dog saved him. Hell, the whole reason Lucky tried to save him was that he gave Lucky a piece of pizza because, again, he likes dogs and Lucky just happened to be standing there, looking cute. He cares about his neighbors. In later issues of Hawkeye 2012 Clint repeatedly is shown helping out his neighbors or just providing entertainment at the potluck.
Clint also had a really, really rough childhood. His dad was an alcoholic, his parents died in a car crash because of that, before they died his dad beat both him and his older brother Barney, he and his brother ran away to join the circus, Clint was beaten and left for dead by one of his parental figures after he caught him stealing money from the ticket box, his relationship with his brother really fell apart after that- and that's the cliff-notes version! It varies somewhat based on continuity but the most consistent part is runaway orphan joining the circus. Personally, when writing Marvel stuff, I adapt it to “Foster care was shitty and my brother and I wanted to stay together, so we ran away, and the circus happened to take us in,” to modernize it a bit.
So in short, Clint is kind, determined, and has had a lot of hardship in his life, particularly his childhood. Hmm, kind, determined, a lot of hardship during childhood? Now, who does this remind me of? Oh yeah, fucking Midoriya!
A huge part of what I think makes MHA so interesting is that its main character is fairly untraditional as far as Shonen protagonists go. Hell, he’s kinda untraditional as far as superhero protagonists go in general. Midoriya is defined by his kindness, he is emotional, he wants to save people above almost everything else. The most iconic battles Midoriya has been involved in thus far are motivated heavily by his drive to save. Think Muscular, Overhaul, and Gentle. (Kouta, Eri, and Eri’s chance to smile again.) (I’ve only seen up to Season Four, although I’ve seen manga spoilers. Don’t ask.) Funnily enough, this all reminds me somewhat of Hawkeye’s traditional origin story. I shall now give you the cliff-notes version that spans multiple years of comics. (At least I think it does, I’d have to double-check and I only have so much time, y’know.)
Clint is inspired by Iron Man to use his skills to fight crime instead of just being a circus entertainer. Unfortunately for Clint, on his first outing after he stops a thief and picks up the money they stole to return it, he gets mistaken for the original thief. Then Iron Man shows up and beats him up. Clint is forced to go on the run, falls in with Black Widow, becomes a recurring Iron Man villain with Widow, falls in love with Widow, gets kind of depressed when Widow disappears (actually recalled to Moscow and reprogrammed), saves Jarvis (the Avenger’s butler, originally just Stark’s Alfred) from a muggers, gets Jarvis’s help to demonstrate to the Avengers that he’s trying to change, and has been an Avengers mainstay ever since. Clint later played a significant part in breaking through Black Widow’s programming and helping her defect to Shield, saving her.
It’s a very unconventional origin story. Redemption arcs have been done, but not many involve wanting to do the right thing from the beginning of a character’s story. My personal favorite adaptation of this backstory is from the cartoon Avengers Assemble, where Clint was a member of the Circus of Crime, but never felt good about it. He triggered the alarm on their biggest heist ever, getting them arrested by Shield, but Fury saw something in him and gave him a chance to make amends, becoming Hawkeye. I understand I am very biased on this though, so I will not argue for it being the best. That aside, it’s unconventional mainly because of how integral to the Avengers Hawkeye later became to the point where the Avengers have very few adaptions without him. So many story arcs involving Clint are based in his desire to do the right thing. All of Hawkeye 2012. His backstory. Widow’s defection. His near divorce over his wife killing someone. (It was justified and accidental.)
There’s another parallel between Midoriya and Clint one could draw, although it depends somewhat on your interpretation of quirklessness in the MHA world. If you think about it, both Clint and Midoriya are disabled. Clint is Deaf. Depending on the continuity, he had progressive hearing loss as a child, had surgery to fix his hearing when he was older (11?), then his ears are injured in a fight, making him lose about 80% of his hearing. Most depictions of Clint’s deafness that I’ve seen stem from Fraction’s Hawkeye Issue #19 but Clint being deaf and wearing hearing aids dates back to 1983 and there’s some comic history after that as to why it didn’t become a frequent part of Hawkeye’s depictions until Fraction but we’re not getting into that right now. (5)
Ignoring Red Shoe theory, (I don’t subscribe to it but it’s still an interesting premise) the interpretation of being quirkless as a disability is a completely valid reading of the text! The pity Midoriya gets after his diagnosis, people treating him as lesser and weaker, his mother apologizing to him, these are all things people in the disabled community have dealt with! I’m not even pulling from fanon, that’s all canon stuff there. Clint has frequently used ASL and lipreading in comics since 2015! He’s worn hearing aids in various depictions on and off since 1983, when he first became a deaf character! He is disabled and a total badass! If you’re doing a story where Midoriya becomes a quirkless hero, well there’s a hero in the public eye whose main thing is trick arrows, i.e. support gear! In addition, the disability interpretation of Quirklessness would be an excellent parallel to utilize in a story that mentions or features disability advocacy.. And this is ignoring the possibility of them both being quirkless in a blended reality crossover. They could bond over having to grow up with quirklessness in a world that discriminates against the quirkless! Midoriya could have grown up idolizing the world-famous archer!
On the other hand, if your Midoriya has OfA, Clint becomes a foil to Midoriya and a great one at that. Clint is a badass member of the Avengers who doesn’t have powers but rather kicks ass with trick arrows and a weapon from the Paleolithic era, plus some martial arts training. He’s what Midoriya could have been. Hell, Hawkeye showing up in the MHA dimension asking for help and hanging out with the next generation to give them some pointers while he’s there could lead to Midoriya doing some serious soul-searching. This isn’t a very far-fetched idea, he mentored Kate Bishop and has led several branches of the Avengers over the years, primarily the West Coast Avengers.
Another way Clint serves as a foil to Midoriya is his impulsiveness and brashness. Clint is generally trying to do the right thing, but he doesn’t always think it through. Again, the mafia thing. His origin story. The serious clashes he had with Cap when he first joined the Avengers. The times he’s been seriously tempted to kill his abusive father figure Swordsmaster. His tendency to flirt with every woman he meets. (6) The shotgun wedding with Mockingbird in the eighties comics (the issue he marries her in is also the issue he is deafened in.) I could go on. To contrast he’s also insanely loyal, once you've earned his respect. (Cap, but Widow as well. And Mockingbird. Kate Bishop.)
On the subject of Ronin, that gives you a pretty good excuse to put Clint n Japan, he could be taking care of unfinished business for the previous holder of the Ronin moniker. (7) This works best in a blended universe of course, but could be tied into a dimension travel fic as well.
But back to the foil thing, Clint does tend to act on his anger as well. This is an excellent contrast to Midoriya. When Midoriya is emotional and expressive, it’s generally his sadness and stress, or his excitement. When Clint is expressive, it’s anger or self-loathing. Parallels, people! Parallels!
Another parallel/way they foil each other is how unhinged they can be. Look, Midoriya grabbed onto All Might’s leg, he rushed the Slime Villain to save Bakugo, he counteracted Eri’s rewind by breaking his bones faster than she could erase him. But Clint is his own brand of crazy. I mean, you have to be pretty nuts to fight superhumans with a bow and arrow, but sometimes Clint takes it to another level. One of the craziest things he’s done, though, is use a combination of a Life Model Decoy, a small-scale time machine, and careful planning to masquerade as his alternate persona Ronin while leaving most of his coworkers and friends under the impression that he was not, in fact doing that. He has on several occasions and in across several media fired a shrunk-down Ant-Man on an arrow (Pym and Lang, although this originated with Lang), in one incarnation had a distraction arrow that when triggered unfurled a “Bang!” flag, frequently utilizes boomerang arrows, and well, you read my summary of Hawkeye Issue 1.
Listen, if you don’t want to write Hawkeye into your story that’s completely valid but the opportunity is right there! It just- it’s just a pet peeve when someone does a hybrid universe and just writes Clint as having a “Perfect Aim” quirk. It’s not a deal-breaker for reading a fic if the rest of the story is interesting enough but it always hurts my heart because that’s just such a disservice to his character. I would take him having literally any other quirk over that. Because his whole deal is that he’s just a guy who’s really, really, good with a bow. That’s what makes him such a badass to me. He’s got a good head for tactics, some martial arts training, and perfect aim that he has cultivated his entire life. If you give him perfect aim as an actual power you have proven to me that you fundamentally do not understand the character you are working with. (Related note, I have mixed feelings about the version of him that appears in the Ultimate universe. Not a point I wish to delve into at this time, but worth mentioning nevertheless.) And you don’t have to understand him write a good story, I just… it’s just a waste of potential. And comics are so vast and the MCU version is so bland I don’t blame anyone for not knowing his character that well! It’s understandable! I’ve long since expected it since I became a Hawkeye fan!
I have read fics where the author is doing perfectly, I am completely engaged by and loving whatever universe they have set up, they have written these characters in such a way that it feels like a totally believable version of how their stories could have gone, and then BAM! Marksmanship quirk for Clint and I just... have to take a break and come back later. I understand this is not a normal reaction, but I am incapable of being normal about him, so here we fucking are. It’s just such a waste of potential.
Listen, you have every right to do what you want with your fic, but I promise you your story will be more interesting if you just let Clint’s character exist in the way he was meant to, as a guy who’s super dedicated to his training and very skilled. I would be happy if there was just a moment, particularly in fics where dimension travel is involved, if whoever Midoriya’s mentor-figure-of-the-day is was thinking about how to deal with Midoriya’s frankly abysmal self-esteem, and essentially went “Hm, my favorite sunshine green bean really needs some encouragement and positive quirkless role model. What if I told him about the quirkless badasses from my reality who, to my knowledge, haven’t been enhanced by magic/genetic modification/cybernetics and still go toe-to-toe with people who have those things! Frequently! I bet he’d think they’re really cool and would maybe be able to hold his head a little higher knowing there are people like him out there who are heroes. He’d really start to believe that he can be a hero too and that he’s just as capable as his peers!”
Or, or, or! in blended reality fics, if Clint had a quirk that was just something kinda dumb like, I dunno, Binocular Eyes, and Clint just uses the bow instead, (Or he’s openly quirkless, IDGAF, just not Perfect Aim please for the love of god) and mentor-figure-of-the-day has a similar train of thought but instead of just telling Midoriya about them they cash in a favor or two that Clint owes them to have Clint meet with Midoriya. And Clint, being the somewhat kind-hearted person that he is, would absolutely be a good sport about it! He would encourage Midoriya! He’s been a mentor and leader before and encouraged other members of the Avengers to guide the Young Avengers rather than try to shut them down!
Alternatively, and this is only something you could pull off in a fic where Clint is a central focus and not part of the backdrop, Clint is faking having a “Perfect Aim” quirk. Or several of his colleagues are aware of it in order to help him conceal it, and mentor-figure-of-the-day spills it in while swearing Midoriya to absolute secrecy. Clint himself telling Midoriya would be really cute though, and perfect for a Mentor fic! Or Clint stumbling onto Bakugo (8) and co harrassing Midoriya and telling them off/threatening them! He would do that, he’s impulsive enough! Clint makes bad jokes, Midoriya is kind and sunshine incarnate, they would get along!
There’s so much, I could go on and on and just- Oh goddammit, I was saving Clint and Midoriya interactions for my long fic that eventually devolves into has dimension travel as a part of the plot but I guess I’m adding a fic where Clint properly mentors Midoriya to my fucking to-do list. I only have myself to blame. Happy Valentine’s Day to me.
This is a cross-media thing too! It happened in Iron Man: Armored Adventures. Y’know, the one where he, Rhodey, and Pepper are all teens at the same high school and Tony is basically this world’s Spider-Man! Actually this is on brand for Armored Adventures, having watched that show. Very chaotic storylines, condenses like decades of comic books storylines into two seasons while staying unquestionably rated TV-Y7. It was actually pretty good, was the first animated series to feature Pepper Potts as Rescue, and also contains one of the best modern adaptions of Hawkeye’s original introduction. I’m not kidding. Oh, and the Avengers are formed at the end of the series, in a sense. I think they just wanted to leave themselves with some potential future storylines in case they got renewed past a second season while still having a satisfying ending. They did not get renewed.
Her name is Simone, in issue #12 of Fraction’s Hawkeye Clint watches cartoons with her kids while she uses Lucky as a pillow. He falls asleep watching the cartoons with them and Simone pulls a blanket over him as she takes her kids back to their apartment. Oh yeah and the whole thing takes place during Kwanzaa because the issue is a winter holiday special that uses the cartoon to tell a story that’s an allegory for Clint’s role in the superhero community. Very wholesome moment, I love Simone.
This marks the point part-way through writing the first draft of that paragraph, I went upstairs to grab my Hawkeye volumes to reread issue 1 and brought all four of them back to my desk to keep them on hand for easy reference. I also wished to make the point I was writing at that time more articulate. I also brought down my Hawkeye vs Deadpool volume and Marvel-verse Hawkeye volume. I had no intention of referencing either of them I just like having all my Hawkeye comics in one place.
This is quite possibly one of the hottest Clint Barton moments ever. I’ll probably upload a scan of it sometime in the future but it ends with him pinning Ivan to the wall by the throat. The next page where he threatens Ivan into selling him the building is also pretty hot, but you’ve already seen the dialogue for that. Ah great, now I’m tempted to a make post ranking the hottest Clint Barton moments across all his different incarnations, for fucks sake.
I can talk comic history of Hawkeye and how Hawkeye has evolved as a character all fucking day. I vibrate with joy when I get to info-dump about this shit and vibrate with stress when I have to dial it back. When I am both talking about it and dialing back, I cease to vibrate as all of my focus goes into scientifically measuring out the maximum amount of info dumping I can get away with. Please ask me questions about Hawkeye, I beg you. I know so much about his many incarnations across different media and I am waiting for any excuse to talk about them or do more research.
His character evolves out of this but classic comics Hawkeye is all about the ladies, and he frequently has minor storylines involving his romantic endeavors. I can’t say I blame him, I’ve seen the women he rolls with. Unfortunately for him they never seem to go well.
The previous holder of the name was Kingpin’s daughter. It’s a long story.
I wanted to talk about using Clint as a foil to Bakugo and/or Todoroki with his impulsiveness/anger issues but having better control over it and being quirkless but I just did not have the energy or the time. Could also be a foil to Eraser or All Might as a mentor figure but I would have to think on that some more and my cats are getting between me and the keyboard. :/
TL;DR: Clint and Midoriya are both characters defined by their determination, their kindness, their lack of power in a world full of powers, and I just think that’s neat.

10 Characters and 10 Fandoms
rules: name 10 of your favorite characters from 10 different fandoms, then tag 10 people to do the same.
Thank you very much for tagging me @courfaeriedust!
Vinland Saga: Thorkell the Tall. look there are so many S tier characters in this manga, but this guy stands head and shoulders above the rest, literally. Leif Erikson is a close second.
The Silmarillion: Caranthir. Maglor was my original favorite Fëanorian, but I relate to this cranky elf a lot more. Honorable mention goes to best boy Finrod.
Naruto: Orochimaru. Yeah, this creep. I relate to his thirst for knowledge, less so his unethical science. Eyeliner game on point, AND still alive into Boruto? Iconic.
Percy Jackson and the Olympians: Annabeth Chase. Wise girl my beloved.
Bloodborne: I am so normal about Micolash. what, what's that? IT'S VALTR WITH THE WHIRLIGIG SAW. (These are my 2 bloodblorbos)
Dishonored: The Outsider. Fascinating guy, seems to like whales and rats.
Redwall series: Martin. This poor little mouse has been through A LOT. Still a sweetie.
Demon Slayer: Nesuko. Tanjiro is a close second, but Nesuko is just such a pure soul.
Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi. Dignified, sassy, and has had every part of his spirit broken to bits multiple times.
Fullmetal Alchemist (Brotherhood): Riza Hawkeye and Roy Mustang. They are a set. DO NOT SEPARATE.
No pressure tags: @rm-namjoon, @bastetsbard, @britt1243, @belovedblabber, @wheredidalltheseelvescomefrom, and you, yes you! I didn't @ you because we aren't mutuals and I didn't want to overstep.

Designer Michele Clapton was interviewed on the occasion of the London and New York auctions of Game of Thrones costumes and artifacts.
Clapton, a winner of multiple Emmy Awards for Outstanding Costumes for a Series, has long been hailed, and rightly so, as a visionary for her work on Game of Thrones. She has awards and acclaim to last a lifetime just for this series, not to mention her work on The Crown and an impressive roster of films. She spent a decade on Game of Thrones, turning a Tower of Babel’s worth of influences – ancient Greece and Rome, Japan, Iran, Native American, and on and on – into a singular, striking body of work.
Interviewer Robert Wilonsky brought up the effect of the clothes on the actors.
Robert Wilonsky: We haven’t even discussed where the actors come into this equation – the people who have to carry these clothes, who use them as inspiration as much as the words. Alan Alda once told me he didn’t become Hawkeye on M*A*S*H until he stepped in those combat boots and slipped on those dog tags – all of which belonged to actual soldiers. “It’s a mysterious thing,” he said, “but it makes you feel more at home in the character.” Michele Clapton: It’s important to listen to their interpretations of the characters. Sometimes they come with a little nugget of insight, and you develop together. Aidan Gillen, who played Littlefinger, brought such a sense of precision to the tiniest details, which is great because his costume is plain, but there was something about this neck clasp that became a key to this character, who was so ambitious. Later we came up with having this beautifully printed image in this plain coat, not that you really saw it – you might get a flash – but a lot of his costume was so internalized. It becomes a part of that character: He knows something you don’t. Pedro Pascal brought such a life to his character and worked closely on his things so that they should move. But over time, all of these actors knew their characters and started to inhabit them, and they either trusted me to move forward or came with lots of thoughts about where they should go. And then there was Diana Rigg, who said, “Darling, I should be wearing a wimple because I don’t want to spend hours in hair.” That’s why she’s the only one in a wimple. And it was gigantic. Robert Wilonsky: I’d always heard that Kit Harington didn’t love the weight of his wardrobe. But the truth is, if the costumes are too light, the characters don’t move the way they should onscreen. Michele Clapton: If a costume is weightless, that changes the gait, the movement, and I don’t believe it anymore. Kit’s coat did get heavier because of the weight of his responsibilities. I wanted to move him from this thin cape of the young boy to the weight of what happens when he goes north, into the cold. There were also actors who said they wanted to wear metal armor because it felt more real to them. Others did not feel the same. [Laughs]
There's much more via the link at the top of the post.

Thoughts on The More I See You
- I kinda dig Hawk’s initial awkward conversation with BJ in which the closest he gets to deflecting is delaying admitting something for about two seconds before it comes out. It’s awkward, it’s uncomfortable, Hawkeye’s clearly thrown very off, but he doesn’t actually dodge or hide anything lol, even readily corrects BJ that Carlye left him rather than the other way around.
- Then he says he needs to see her and leaves, and while he goes to get intel from Radar first, he and BJ are still seemingly the first people who show up to say hi lol so he didn’t delay long in ripping the bandaid off. Like even at his most understandably awkward and reticent he holds very little back.
- Hawk deriding advertising in comparison to surgery as a career in a little rant, solidifying Carlye’s point that he was never going to prioritize her over it in how defensive he is about it.
- BJ’s “married person” conversation with Hawkeye is weird honestly and yeah my take, intended or not, is that BJ is definitely lying, to Hawkeye when he claims he doesn’t disapprove and doesn’t care, and to himself when he says he’s never been tempted. My evidence is: Mike Farrell’s delivery throughout; BJ’s overinvestment in other peoples’ marriages as seen in Of Moose and Men, the tag in which BJ lies for no reason with no other possible thematic relevance; the fact that BJ is the one to bring up Hawkeye’s affair with Carlye out of complete thin air only to then claim he doesn’t have an opinion on it; Hawkeye stating that BJ disapproves; the wordiness of BJ’s denials; “A lot of people are unfaithful.” “I read that in the cheater’s almanac,” ie BJ indirectly correcting Hawkeye’s downplayed phrasing with the more direct and indefensible ‘cheater,’ implying disapproval; aaaaaand the fact that he cheats next season lol.
- I’ve seen a lot of people who think Carlye intends to tell her husband she cheated on him and divorce him, which is odd because when breaking it off she says: “I’ve always been honest with Doug,” to which Hawkeye urges her to stay honest and tell him, to which she replies, as a reason not to: “he’ll want a divorce.” In line with every other cheating plot in the show, the continuation of the marriage is prioritized, and like BJ and Potter’s son in law’s plots, the moral is to keep your affair to yourself so you don’t ruin your marriage.
- Carlye brushing off the way she left without a word the first time, as something Hawkeye let happen and should’ve seen coming: wow harsh.
- Ultimately it boils down not to a flaw of Hawkeye’s but to irreconcilable differences, which I dig. “That’s fair! That’s how it should be!” Hawkeye can live without her, which isn’t enough for Carlye. This is reinforced in Stars and Stripes too, where he mentions this relationship in terms of incompatibility - I couldn’t change in med school for a woman I loved. But he’s still waiting for that custom fit. So anyway I’m sticking with my take that he’s willing to commit but it has to be with the right person - and the right person won’t demand that he prioritize them over his career.
- incidentally I also think this clashes with GFA lol, in making Hawkeye’s career shift more of a tragedy than it’s framed as. It should not be seen as ‘oh good, now that he’s traumatized by war and dropping his intense career path he can commit to someone’ it should be ‘wow the war destroyed the one thing he couldn’t even sacrifice for love? fucked up.’ any post-canon story where he can fully prioritize a person over his career is now sad to me.
- idk this episode is ultimately fine. not a fave, but much better than the het backstory could’ve been lol.

I actually wanted to put this in the tag at first but then like- yknow what i'll just write it here
LOVE AND THUNDER RUINED A LOT OF MCU'S WORLDBUILDING.
Tumblr media
Like i swear i wanted to leave the movie alone out of everything but when i see people mentioned these stuff???? I can't i'm sorry i just CAN'T.
-The whole stuff with INFINITY CONES ice cream store???? Just why the fuck would there be a store that's based on an apocalypse for all species and humanity???? 5 years filled with grief and loss and everyone still needed to survive and seriously an ice cream store??? wandavision, shang chi, fatws, hawkeye, mom, gotg 3, list goes on and on they're dealing with the lost of what thanos had taken and then this existed JUST WHAT???
Plus with what happened in secret invasion just made it so much worse, in the middle of gravik's plan and many skrull's suffering, SERIOUSLY??????
-(i don't really mind this too much but i think it's worth mentioning) not having a heart to heart talk about jane with peter and thor, like peter would DEF understand what it felt like cause he, too, had ever lost a loved one due to cancer. I get that the guardians left early but ngl thor could've messaged peter about it or sum???? Like man :((((((
-GOD BUTCHER PLOT AND GORR HIMSELF. Look, i LOVE moon knight, i ADORE it very much, and the show explained the egyptian gods pretty well imo. I care for taweret, for khonshu, hell even ammit, i'm interested in these characters and what could happen next on their stories. Then a few months later love and thunder came in and it had A GOD BUTCHER AS THE VILLAIN. This sends me in a genuine chill dude like what will happen to the enneads??!?!? What will happen to moon bois?!?!?! It's like A WAR IS COMING, THE STAKE IS REAL HERE, PLUS IT'S CHRISTIAN BALE MAN!!! But then only to get disappointed with whatever the fuck they did with gorr :(
Does the enneads even matter anymore? Do they even know about this??? Like goddd you have decent worldbuilding establishments with previous thor movies, black panther and moon knight and then have a villain that could eradicate all of what those previous projects had established AND THEN HAVING THE WORST TAKE POSSIBLE ON THE VILLAIN????
And yet biggest let down is the fact that moon knight and love & thuder released in the same year. So it's like marvel set moon knight to expand the universe and love & thunder can embrace it so much more....which is a really cool fucking idea right????!?!? But oh well-
-and then this stuff with asgardians and skrulls?!?!??? Ngl if i didn't try to look out for some secret invasion stuff on tumblr i wouldn't even realized asgardians had their own town just fine!!!
But anyway like it really made the tone from secret invasion just.....kinda gone????!!! Like hell why the fuck no asgardians have a scene where they talked about this?!?!??? Why's there no establishment for what's going on with the skrulls??? It could make sense that the asgardians didn't even knew skrulls existed like DUH THAT'S WHAT THE FIRST EP OF SI WAS ALL ABOUT. But the thing is, having not a single character talked about a glimpse of the skrull is really sad to me, a bit of val knowing about this at least?? Like both asgardians and skrulls having ended up on earth is because they had no home, no safe place to stay anymore....
Why explore these places and cool stuff then just....abandon it after you establish it????
I bet the Skrulls really hate the fact that the Asgardians have their own town and government while they are hanging out at abandoned nuclear plants. Asgardians are just as dangerous, jut not "scary".
Gravik's villain origin story is probably watching Valkyrie's Old Spice ad.

… you mentioned a mafia au in your tags… 👀👀 perhaps maybe you would to share it 👀👀 pretty please 👀👀
oh anon, i would love to <3
scar is a marksman/sharpshooter, he has near perfect accuracy from like really far away. his code name is hawkeye (because of course it is)
grian knows everything one can know, for everything that is brought up, he knows the five w’s and then some. his code name (because again, of course) is the watcher.
mumbo (code name: vampire) is the clean up crew. disposes of bodies, cleans up blood, glass, weapons. he can be given the bloodiest crime scene, and he’ll leave cleaner the new.
bdubs is a sleeper agent (code name: the sleeper, nickname: sleeping beauty), he can go undercover for years at a time. nobody knows how he does it, nobody wants to.
bdubs bring a case to grian and scar, who then have to go undercover to infiltrate dogwarts. they go undercover as a couple and are forced to be in a fake relationship. scar and grian have had horrible crushes on each other for literal years. everybody else can see it but they are just pining away (they both know, they just don’t want it to interfere with work).
martyn figures out that there’s something off about grian after a few meetings. grian feels guilty, because he’s the reason it failed. so, he goes off alone to take down dogwarts to make it up to everyone. scar, mumbo, and bdubs freak out, because unlike grian, they don’t have all the information in the world…. but perhaps they know someone who might.
pearl, aka the prophet, and grian grew up together, they’re as thick as thieves, as close as siblings. so scar, mumbo and bdubs take a trip and ask her about where grian might be.
they find him, and he gets mad because he caused all of it, he’s going to fix all of it. he doesn’t want his friends to be in possible danger because of his mistakes. they all camp out in his motel room but he and scar are up in the middle of the night. they sit outside, looking up at the stars and they talk and maybe kiss occasionally, but scar convinces grian to let them help, that it wasn’t his fault. they make a plan to take them down, from the outside this time, and it works almost flawlessly.
almost because grian is hurt, and because of that scar leaves his station to make sure he’s alright, which means the fate of the operation is in the hands of bdubs and mumbo, who aren’t ever really on the scene as it’s happening. grian tells scar that he loves him, thinking that he’s going to die. scar calls mumbo over to apply pressure to grians wounds while he takes care of the rest.
grian wakes up in one the beds they have in their med-bay, scar is holding his hand, sitting in the chair next to him. grian smiles and squeezes his hand. scar wakes up and they kiss and get together officially, because they basically were already and there’s no point in needlessly breaking their hearts <3

Forgive me @valeks-star as after many years I’ve still yet to figure out how to copy-paste tags, but I wanted to mention I did consider the possibility you’re describing after I posted this and agree that the Angst would be devastating.
That being said, double the hilarity once Hawkeye’s back home and goes to his first medical conference stateside for doctors up and down the East Coast, and Trapper just. Just bumps into his supposedly-dead-except-not-really-friend, who has no idea why Trapper should have so strongly believed him to be dead all this time at all.
I’ve seen both “Trapper gets the incorrect news that Hawkeye is dead circa ‘The Late Captain Pierce’” and “Trapper watched ‘The Interview’ back home” fics as two separate ideas but I raise you that it would be extremely funny if Trapper thought Hawkeye died a few weeks after he went home only to see him right there on his home television. Can you imagine the shock, the elation, the rage? He probably calls collect to Korea just to rant to Radar at two in the morning. “That bastard had me mourning him for a whole month! I don’t care if he’s just got off a double, wake him up so I can give him a piece of my mind!”
