Continuing look outside (6 days left)

I have recruited Papineau, the Goth Xaria and the Punk Montgomery, and I have roaches living with me. The apartment is getting crowded, but I like the found family/community aspect. It is fun to watch characters interact over meals or when you play video games. The baby rat has the funniest antics, including stealing chess pieces (they're actually junk, but still), trying to be intimidating, and playing with the other kids. It feels hopeful even though the world as our protagonist knew it was gone (at least, I assume so; these mutations don't seem temporary).

There are several pockets of community throughout the game. You find a group in the basement with a nurse caring for everyone, the astronomers have their group, and there is a gang of people at Mutt's Fish and Chips. Those who did not have a community outside of their apartment did not seem to do as well, and the survivors who banded together seemed to be keeping up each other's spirits and looking for solutions. It adds to the message that the only way to survive a disaster is to work together and be a team, not to be hyper-individualistic and hostile. Personally, I love that. I'm a big believer in community and taking care of each other.

I like that the game reminds you it is that you are a horror RPG; you can't save everyone. The game reminds you that it is a horror game, and no matter how hard you try, not every person can be saved. Some characters are already dead, others ask you to kill them, or they are so hostile and volatile to the entire community that if you did nothing, it would be worse for everyone.

Papineau asks you to search for and save the other janitors who are somewhere in the building. When you find them, some are already dead because they are all enveloped in mycelium from parasitic mushrooms. You try to save the other janitors and Phillipe, but then it turns out that the spores from the Spore Queen made copies of them all; they were already dead. You go to the effort to try to save four people who never existed, as they were part of the monstrous sore queen infecting the area.

The game is set in Canada (Quebec, to be specific). I love the little nods to Canada that set it apart from other games. You can get loonies and toonies (dollar and two-dollar coins), people have French names, and Papineau has a Metis sash. It makes me very happy. I find it really nice to play games not set in the US for once, especially when I recognize the setting, the culture, and the references feel real and relatable to me.

Some of the characters have mutated into their fears; some are abominations, and others are actually quite cute. It’s amazing how much character variety there is, it goes beyond body horror with characters that are literally giant moths, plant monsters, cars, telescopes and way more. Of course, you see people with too many eyes, teeth, and other more classic body horror, but the variety is fascinating.

I love the game, and the secrets and achievements I can find/unlock are funny and interesting. You also have a lot of choices regarding how to talk to characters, and the results can be horrifying, funny, or sweet. It feels like a game I can play several times, not just because I want to try the other dialogue options but to collect all the treasures and game cartridges and complete quests/tasks in different orders.

Playing Look Outside has been an experience for me, this is my first playthrough after watching BawkbaSoup play on YouTube

I am maybe 5 or 6 days (out of 16 in-game days) done so far

I have recruited a few characters, and I am trying very hard this run to avoid combat and kill people if I can. It is tough to do that. I love how every monster is different. You can tell the game was made with love and passion because the pixel art is beautiful, the characters feel like real people, and the music is banger after banger.

The best part about the game is that it is somehow both cozy and a horror game. It does not pretend not to be a horror game; it is 100% a horror game based around body horror, dread, the unknown, and fear of change. The whole story is very eldritch, with people mutating into horror from the outside. You can't look outside or hear a description of the outside without mutating.

It feels like a huge metaphor for disability and chronic illness. When the disability comes in, when mutated, people change unpredictably, and some people lose control over their minds and bodies. This reminds me, as a chronically ill person, of the “suddenness" of becoming sick and the fear related to that. Some people will bite at you because their bodies move on their own, and some have lost their minds and attacked you brutally out of instinct. It’s so so good.

Mara and Orchidia deserve to have a fucking cigarette after revealing to each other their shared fear of succumbing to evil and ending up destroying the world which makes them consider whether it would be better to just kill themselves but they don't because they feel they have an obligation to do what they can to make things better

Eddie wasn’t quite panicking, but he was close. He could at least convince himself that he had everything under control despite the end of the week looming ever closer. It was your three month anniversary. Three blissful months with the most incredible human he had ever met and even if you insisted that you didn’t need any big celebration, Eddie knew better. You deserved to be celebrated and worshiped, the only problem was, he had no fucking clue what he was doing.

The man was five articles deep on the best anniversary ideas but none of them would be perfect (or cheap enough). “Maybe she’d appreciate half a dozen orgasms and some shitty take out.” Eddie grunted as his forehead hit the desk, abandoning his quest with a whimper.

“That’s what you do every week.” Venom curled itself around Eddie’s broad shoulders, its white eyes skimming over the section on a Parisian getaway before looking down at its pouting host.

“It’s worked this far hasn’t it?”

“Pathetic.” Eddie’s head spun around so quickly his neck clicked. Venom sighed heavily and slunk back towards the kitchen. “You claim to love this human yet you do not put in any effort into seducing her. You just throw her around and expect her to enjoy it.” It plucked up a chocolate bar with a thin tendril, waving it in the air before it threw the sweet into its wide maw.

“Why are you suddenly an expert on dating? Last I checked, you barely even tolerated having her around if she wasn’t feeding you.” Venom scowled, releasing a soft growl as he licked his teeth clean. 

“You chose her as a mate, do not judge how I deal with it.” Eddie sighed and ran his fingers through his cropped hair. You would be home soon and he was running out of free time until it was your anniversary.

“Well, do you have any bright ideas on what I should do if you’re so smart.” Venom hummed, seeping back into Eddie just as your heels clicked up the hall.

“I may have an idea.”

“I told you that we didn’t have to do anything today.” You giggled as Eddie helped you off his bike, his large hands deliberately lingering on your hips even after you found your footing. He just smirked and pressed a quick kiss to your full cheek as he reached behind you for the bag propped up behind your seat.

“And miss this chance to spoil you? Absolutely not.” You clung to his free arm, squeezing the hard muscle of his biceps as Eddie led you towards the empty field sprawled out in front of you. 

“You aren’t gonna kill me are you? Cause I didn’t tell my roommate where I was going tonight and I need someone to feed my fish for me.” Even though it was just shy of pitch black, you knew Eddie was rolling his eyes. His arm slipped from your hold for just a second and before you could reach around again for it, he grabbed your ass and gave it a generous squeeze.

Your surprised yelp carried across the field, as did Eddie’s accompanying laughter. “Hands off the goods, handsome.” You scolded but took his hand back in yours anyway, your fingers intertwining.

“Sorry princess.” Soon enough, you both slowed, coming to a patch where the grass wasn’t as long and the sound of crickets seemed to dull slightly. With another kiss to your cheek, Eddie pulled a blanket from his bag, laying it out perfectly with a flick of his wrists.

“Shit Brock, you practise that just for me?” 

“I was single for a long time, baby, these wrists have put in some real work.” You scrunched your nose and shoved him off you as Eddie went for another kiss.

“You’re disgusting.” But it came out as more of a giggle than anything else.

“And yet, you love the things these wrists can do.” He purred against your lips. 

Your arms wound around his neck, tugging him closer. “Oh you bet I do.” Just like always, you melted into his kiss, eagerly lapping up his affection as he held your waist to him. Just as his tongue brushed against your bottom lip, Eddie flinched and pulled away.

“Yeah, I hear you, there’s no need to threaten my liver.” 

“What’s Venom saying?” You asked with a voice full of fondness.

“Just reminding me why we brought you here in the first place.” He helped you down onto the blanket before joining you. Eddie guided your head to his chest as you wrapped yourself around him and finally looked up.

Millions of stars stretched across the night sky, each one shimmering brilliantly from their place in the universe. They clumped together like strokes of a paintbrush reaching all the way down to the horizon. “Wow.” You breathed. “I never knew you could see so many stars so close to the city. It’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen.”

Eddie’s fingers gently ran up and down your back as he hummed. “Yeah you are.” 

You tore your gaze away to look at your boyfriend, who was already looking at you. Heat crawled up your cheeks and you turned away. “Fucking sap.” You muttered as his chest rumbled with soft laughter.

He kissed the top of your head and finally joined you in watching the galaxy go by. 

“This is perfect Eds. Where did you come up with this?”

“Had some help from Venom. I was just gonna eat you out till you passed out.” You jammed your finger into his ribs just as Venom did the same thing from inside him. “Hey! I can’t have you both teaming up against me! I’m fragile.”

“Yeah right.” You said as Venom echoed the same sentiment, making Eddie smirk. “Will you thank it for me then, I don’t think I’ve ever had a man be this romantic for me before.”

Venom remained silent but Eddie could tell just how pleased it was. “I will. Happy 3 months princess.”

MY DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS THREAD

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince is the first DQM game I've ever gotten to play after admiring the series since childhood. The bad news is that it leaves out exactly the three DQ monsters I love most. The good news is that everything else about it is great. I've been taking regular screenshots as I play and I am going to start adding things about it to this post, so it is going to get long. First of all here are exactly my next three favorite monsters in the franchise, which they fortunately did include, and were all available to me by almost the first area:

"Mad Mollusk" or in other dq games "taileater" is great because it has a sad flabby slug face at one end and a fanged leech mouth at the other end. When it uses magic, it reveals giant eyeballs in its antennae somehow?! Love how big the "carnivorous" mouth gets in the attack animation. What a stretchy guy!

"Lunatick" is just called "meda" (eye) in Japanese, I'm glad they decided it was like a parasite thing in the localization.

Finally there's DROHL, a classic DQ enemy that looks like...well I'm not gonna say what it really looks like but I think it's a cool little freak unrelated to that and I think it talks exactly like Droopy dog. Oddly it's known as a "Drohl DRONE," and I believe there are other "castes" in other DQ games, but only the "drones" are in this one sadly. I've yet to find this in the wild; I got it through the breeding system!

....Which is by far the most addicting thing about this game. The actual gameplay is good solid turn based RPG stuff, if a bit basic, but every monster can be bred with another monster to unlock a slew of other species. This is one of the first games in which they actually call it a "fusion" system now, I guess dropping the word "breed" from the English localization, but all other in-game dialog still calls these the 'parents' and 'offspring' and even makes jokes that they're getting married, so yeah, it's still breeding. What happens when you breed a slime with someone's dead grandpa??

.....There are multiple monsters you can get from that, but one of them, and the one that makes the most sense, is Slimeshroom! This is a new DQ slime that's some fungus! What's also fun is that every monster has up to three skills, and each skill actually unlocks a ton of spells, attacks, boosts and effects as you spend skill points on them. Then when you breed two monsters, you can give the baby any three skills from the parents. Any at all! I used this to make my Slimeshroom both a healer and a fire mage in the early game. This catches you up with the same progress I talked about when I first got the game almost two months ago so here's some things that have happened since:

I bred a flying cat and a vampire chinchilla to get a.....sexy bat??

I helped a fat rat - that's the name of his species - rescue his son

I bred a people ghost with a lamp ghost to get a bag of dirt!

I fought this bastard giraffe man who called an elderly wizard a "naughty boy" and put him in candy jail.

"Duffer" from the Giraffe quest is also best friends with Eileen the eye demon, and when you rescue him, they become your loyal subjects! BAD NEWS: this entire game is actually a prequel to Dragon Quest 4, and the player character of this game is the villain of Dragon Quest 4. Duffer and Eileen are also in Dragon Quest 4. They die :( .......Maybe this game gives you a chance to fix that future??? I don't know.

There's this part in NPAB (which I have read 5 times despite a) it being 1.15mil words long and b) having never read the actual tgcf book) where Hualian are talking vaguely around the idea of kids and Hua Cheng says something like "have you ever felt a love so consuming that you're afraid it doesn't leave room to love anyone else?"

and I'm just thinking of Xie Lian going scrap collecting for fun and coming back with a whole human infant and sure enough for a good long while it's "parasite (derogatory)" eating up his gege's time and attention but then one day baobei does that thing babies do where they stand in your lap and grab your nose and say something devastatingly cute like idk "fafa" and from that point on that's Hua Cheng's Baby (TM) that's his "parasite (affectionate)" that's his "roly-poly (insect (affectionate))"

baobei didn't grow on him like mold like everyone said they would, baobei latched onto him like a tick with absolutely no warning or lead-up and now he has two (2) people he would die for which honestly makes him panic for a bit but it's okay bc gege would be sad if he could have died to save baobei and didn't bc that's the kind of thing good parents do and oh no baobei is mortal so he ropes Fengqing into a quest to figure out how to guarantee godhood so baobei never dies and gege will never be sad (yes just gege fuck off fengqing hua cheng doesn't get sad he gets Mad (TM) like he will be if they don't figure out how to make baobei immortal like. yesterday)

⚘ Thiollier is a bit reserved when it comes to intimacy. He would prefer you to initiate any type of affection since he’s worried that he’d scare you off.

⚘ when he does get comfortable with showing you his love, he is very aggressive with it. He clings to you like a kitten clinging to his owners legs with his claws.

⚘ I think you should bite him. I’m peer pressuring you into doing it. This is very self indulgent, but he would be very annoyed if you bit him, but not in a serious way. Bite him on the cheek.. he’s so cute I can’t.

⚘ sorry for that last one, but another is that I want to bring up a statement I made in my last post about him. He loves to be against you. Just skin to skin contact. He can’t even express how much he just wants his skin to fuse with yours.

⚘ he longs for you when you leave on your quests. He just stays in the same place and waits for you to come back. You usually get back after a day or two, and he’s immediately all over you.

⚘ again, skin to skin contact is super important to him. He’s made it clear to you that he does not want to be sexual with you, but he does love laying naked with you. The more skin touching, the better.

⚘ touch his back. Have yall watched Doukyusei? Imagine that scene in the park. That’s you (me) and Thiollier. His back is sensitive, so he only lets you touch it if he truly trusts you.

⚘ He doesn’t want to get hurt (especially since he knows you meet a lot of people), so he will sometimes just distance himself from you and ignore you. At these times, emotional intimacy is important.

⚘ stay with him during this time, but don’t coddle him. Try checking up on him every once in awhile until he’s ready to talk. Just listen to him and comfort him. Using kind words makes him feel better, but not too much.

⚘ when he’s upset, he is very high maintenance. You need to comfort him, but not “coddle” or “pity” him. You need to give him space, but don’t ignore him or he’ll freak out. You could do the same thing that works for awhile, but then one day it just won’t work.

⚘ he has a lot of meltdowns during this time and says very hurtful things, so just be calm and comfort him. Try to communicate as best as you can, and make sure it’s clear that you love him and that you want to help him.

⚘ he’s a lot, but you love him. Just comfort him and allow him to stay fused to your body like a parasite. A good parasite.

So while I was trying to get the Ivory Wraith to impregnate my PC with their second child, on a whim I decided to have her apologise to him (she wasn't currently using her mouth for anything else, so why not?). And IW had the most interesting reaction:

My PC has already experienced the Schism event (and didn't personally steal IW's necklace, if that matters), which is probably what lead to her saying that instead of the usual "sorry for being bad". I'm not sure where my PC could have seen IW's face before; maybe the Schism event, maybe the Christmas mirror event, maybe some other lore-related reason (reincarnation of the initiate???). But it's yet one more thing that's fuelling my love/obsession for our local cryptid. Ivory Wraith as an LI when???

The PC is just so integrated with the town's history that maybe it isn't just from being reincarnated from the Initiate (if the reincarnation thing is real or not) but some other factors!

like this one scene when you're walking the dogs from the pound that needs a high willpower check! That also doesn't include the scene when you first step in the youth ward!

There's just so many scenes that the PC has some familiarity that even they didn't knew about and some part where there memories are faulty and can't seem to properly remember some things.

The PC themselves are a mystery, what their role is and of course the divine tf having some kinship with Auriga and Virgo.

And lastly - this may be a hot take but I much prefer having IW like this. Not as a LI but just some recurring thing. Because I like having to anticipate every month for the blood moon, having only one chance to either seek out or get possessed by IW with the exception of the compound quest and IW randomly visiting you whenever you check up on your kids (parasitic and human).

It's special. And that's what draws people in, only having a fleeting meeting that ends once the sun raises (if you can forget about the traumatic experience afterwards) and really emphasizes the fact that Ivory Wraith is not a person.

Want I really want is the content to give them back their necklace!!!! Idc if I have to strangle quinn to get the necklace - im gonna die trying.

The Wheel of Stagnation

I’ve had one year and some change to process season two of The Wheel of Time and while I enjoyed my second viewing more than the first I’m still frustrated by its inconsistent character development.

Season one, for better or worse, revolved around Moiraine’s quest to find the dragon reborn - which sees her playing governess to five unruly twenty-somethings hellbent on reenacting middle school drama while trying to save the world. Conversely, season two largely focuses on Rand the Bland and Nynaeve Al’do-anything-I-damn-well-please Meara. The shift in focus, from Moiraine to Rand and Nynaeve causes the story to drag even while the writers sprint through an eight-episode arc. They didn’t have time to squander character development, but squander they did.

The most glaring issue is that Rand and Nynaeve persist in being stubborn to the point of stagnation. When we meet up with Rand in Cairhien it becomes obvious he spends most of his time shacked up with Lanfear and slumming about bars. He’s not shown to have a particular goal in mind nor does he express an urgency to become the dragon. I get it. I would rather spend time with the sinfully dressed Lanfear than the hobo-gone-loco Loghain too. That said, he acts like he has all the time in the world to become the prophesied hero he is meant to be. I know that his stagnation becomes a central plot point, but I could easily argue that this is bad writing because we still don’t know who he is after 16 episodes.

While Rand sightsees in Cairhein, Nynaeve is shown to be stubbornly tolerating the Aes Sedai at the tower. She stagnates by rejecting magical training (something most children dream of being able to do) to drink sewer water. That’ll teach your instructors a lesson! Don’t cleanse your water of impurities, give yourself a parasite or hepatitis! She then stubbornly stagnates in the gates to live with an alternate reality Lan and his baby child only to nearly be trapped there forever. Then she stubbornly stagnates to leave the tower with Egwene and is duped by Liandrin and delivered to the enemy Sul’dam. So, if we’re keeping score, thus far she’s made zero good decisions. And then because she refused training at the tower, she accidentally alerts the Sul’dam to her location when she attempts to channel which leads to the death of a warder and the capture of a sister. FFS.

Moiraine is the best character on this show even though she was on the same journey as Rand and Nynaeve in season two - one of stubbornness and stagnation. The difference is that it killed her to stand still. And so it broke my heart when she lost access to the source, and did the best she could to control affairs from afar, all whilst dealing with the most petulant young adults I’ve ever encountered in fiction. I can only imagine the seismic sigh I’d have heaved in my blue dress while angrily leading this lot through the countryside listening to them talk about how they’re trying so hard while doing absolutely nothing that I have asked them to do. This woman possesses the patience of a saint.

And then, to be accused by the woman she loved of lying after twenty years of affection, adoration, and honesty across vast distances. Blasphemy. Am I frustrated that Moiraine didn’t write Siuan and explain why she wasn’t training Rand? Yes. But even Lan, a man tortured by Moiraine’s dismissal of him this season, knows her heart is good and always in the right place. He performed his duty to her and put her first in all ways. Moiraine didn’t make it easy, but relationships never are. Siuan though? How do you not give Moraine the benefit of the doubt when she cannot lie and is standing before you swearing that you know more than anyone else? When she swears she would never lie to you while tears form in her eyes? To ignore all of their past and violate Moraine’s free will by forcing her to obey an oath is unforgivable. You cannot love a slave.

Let's stop pretending this show is about Rand.

Day 8: Slow Blink

Prompt: Smile Fandom: The Witcher (TV) Pairing: Geralt & Jaskier Summary: Jaskier discovers something interesting about his companion. Word count: 1,404 read on ao3 instead

Jaskier had been traveling with Geralt for four years when he finally learned something absolutely fundamental about his friend. The witcher might disagree, but to Jaskier this was the most important discovery he'd made since he'd found the man himself.

It was a hot day and they were stuck in mud up to their ankles, trudging through some hovel right at the edge of a wide river.

"Why are we here, Geralt?" Jaskier had whined, lifting his hat to wipe the sweat from his brow. His companion had only grunted and walked on. "Geralt. Geralt! You know, I'm sure Roach would have a thing or two to say about you dragging her through this mire. We could catch a disease! What if we all get a parasite! And for what!"

He looked over at the horse in question to see what she thought of the situation, but Geralt moved in front of him to feed her a treat from the saddlebag.

"Roach is fine," he said. She did look fine-- crunching down on the hard, rooty end of a carrot and somehow making it through the mud like it was water instead of awful sludge that was trying to take Jaskier's shoes off his feet every time he took a step. He stopped walking, overheated and annoyed.

"That's it!" he cried. "I'm finding an inn--" he looked around at the sad little huts and gardens. "--or a tree stump, or somewhere I can go and wait for you to come back. This is ridiculous."

Geralt looked at him and said, "Okay," and gave him a look that clearly meant, Why should I care? It would be hurtful if Jaskier hadn't spent so much time with him. Geralt never wanted him to come with him on Witcher business. By now the bard was good at convincing himself it was solely because Geralt cared so much for his health and well-being.

Rolling his eyes, Jaskier made to turn around and stride away, forgetting for a moment that his shoes were firmly stuck in mud. He felt his bag drop first as he flailed his arms to steady his balance, and then he was tipping backwards as if in slow motion, gazing up at the unfairly blue sky as he finally landed on the ground. His lovely linen shirt squelched into the ground as his legs bent at the knee, his shoes still planted.

Roach stepped away, alarmed. Geralt patted her side reassuringly while his gaze was on Jaskier, who blearily noted how fetching his yellow eyes looked against the summer sky. As he watched, the witcher closed his eyes and opened them again, too long to be a blink but too short to be anything else.

Furrowing his brow, Jaskier stuck out an arm to Geralt, who sighed but heaved him out of the mud. His clothes and shoes left the ground with an awful sucking noise.

Subtly, he watched the witcher's face as he dragged himself back into order, wiping mud from his elbows and the backside of his satchel. After a few seconds, Geralt blinked, short and unremarkable. Jaskier was tempted to call it a fluke-- after all, blinking slightly longer than usual could mean anything, or nothing at all. On top of that, the bard was frustrated with Geralt, covered in mud, and wanted nothing more than to strip all his clothes off and plunge into a cold bath.

He simply said, "Right, well. I'll see you when you're finished, I assume." He tried to be subtle as he took Roach's sack of treats from the saddlebag, but it didn't work. The horse nosed at him and the witcher tilted his head and frowned even deeper.

"So you both come back," he quipped, trying to sound like he was joking even though he wasn't. "I'll just be taking this with me on my quest to find suitable lodgings. Don't be out too late, dear." He stuffed the sack into his own bag and carefully marched away.

Two days later, Geralt came back to the little riverside town, smelling truly awful and with the head of some hideous swamp-thing strapped to his saddle. Jaskier had been fortunate enough to find an old, unused stable and made himself a nice little bed out of smelly hay. He hadn't felt inspired to play (he wasn't sure anyone there would be able to pay him for the privilege) so he worked on composing new songs instead as he waited for the witcher to return.

When he did, Jaskier didn't notice at first, too busy staring into the distance and counting off lines of metered verse. He was sitting on a boulder on the riverbank with one foot on the ground and the other propped up on his seat. He had nothing with him but his lute and his leather-bound notebook.

He jumped when he felt something shove his shoulder. Roach was behind him, Geralt looming above on her back. He sprang to his feet.

"Geralt! The Lady Roach!" he said, then stopped. "What is that smell?"

Before Geralt could answer (or, more likely, not answer), Roach pushed him again with her nose. Then she pushed him again and he stumbled to keep his balance.

Geralt made a noise that might have been a sigh. "Where are her carrots, bard?"

Jaskier was trying to pet the horse into submission but she wasn't interested in being mollified and began to nose her way into his jacket.

"Is that what this is about? I have her little bag in the stable just there--," his voice cut off with a warble as Roach took a step forward, shoving Jaskier along with her, and he lost his battle to stay upright. For the second time in three days, Jaskier watched the earth turn to sky in front of his eyes as he fell backward, this time directly into the river.

When he came up spluttering, he saw Roach pawing the ground and the witcher standing next to her and staring at him. When their eyes met, Jaskier glaring in disbelief, Geralt closed his eyes again in that same long blink as before. Then he turned his head to look at Roach and did it again at her.

Jaskier stood up and dripped, looking around at the river. The water was cool and relatively clear. "There isn't an inn here, Geralt," he said. "This is probably the best place to bathe for several miles." He did want to grumble a bit at the hair plastered to his face and the soaked feathers in his hat, but the water felt like heaven in the summer humidity.

"Also, I can smell you from here."

Geralt huffed and looked away, but he tied Roach to a log and undressed. As he waded into the water and felt the grime and sweat wash away from him, he did it again. One moment his face was hard as the steel of his sword and the next his whole expression seemed to soften and his eyes fell closed, then opened again.

Jaskier felt epiphany close over him. Oh. He was reminded of the cats his sister had kept growing up. Their nurse had told them to watch and listen whenever they could because not every creature used words like they could. Pay attention to everything else, she'd said, and you'll get the message anyway.

Jaskier was paying attention. He was paying the most attention. He thought he might have just made the discovery of his lifetime. Namely, that the witcher Geralt, White Wolf and the Butcher of Blaviken, smiled. Not only that, but he did it often.

After that, Jaskier was on the lookout for Geralt's peculiar little smile. Unfortunately, he saw it most often directed toward Roach or whenever Jaskier managed to embarrass himself somehow. It wasn't until they'd been traveling together nearly ten years that he started to see it more regularly even when he hadn't just fallen over a tree stump or ripped his trousers.

When they met that spring, Jaskier spotted him at the stables before Geralt had turned around.

"Geralt!" he shouted, joy making his limbs feel light. He had stopped resisting the urge to hug Geralt somewhere around their seventh year, so he didn't hesitate before throwing his arms around the witcher, who simply looked down at Jaskier and blinked, long and slow.

He couldn't wipe the beam from his face for days.

1- In your own words, tell us what you like most about your MC / OC.

She’s an idealist, preoccupied by social justice. While at the Tower, she constantly fought the authoritarian leaders, which resulted in her and her sister needing to flee so she wouldn't ‘get disappeared’. Now that she’s leading her own colony, she is still trying to find the right balance, ensuring everyone’s voice is heard and feels welcomed.

2- Do you feel your MC / OC is like you at all? How are you alike or different?

I think we both lean towards social justice and fairness in our decision-making. And I definitely gave her some of my musical tastes! (Though I have more grunge and alternative in my repertoire.)

But other than that, Eva is much cooler than I could ever hope to be!! 🙂 She’s a fighter, brave, willing to put her life on the line for others.

3- What is most important to your MC / OC? What is their motivation in life?

Eva is not the bravest, but she is fiercely loyal to her friends. Being forced to leave her fatally injured sister Brynn, her only family, behind after narrowly escaping The Tower was the hardest thing she’d ever done. It left her deeply scarred. She refuses to lose anyone else she's close to and will put her own life on the line if she can save her friends or members of her colony.

Her friendship and frequent quests with Eli and Angel help her gradually feel more confident in her fighting skills. As a leader of the newly established Olympus Colony, she speaks up against injustices and tries to be conciliatory. What are their biggest pet peeves/dislikes?

She despises cruel, self-centered people. Unfortunately there are too many in her post-apocalyptic world, who will do anything, kill anyone just to survive a day longer.

While she generally loves Troy’s easy-going attitude, she absolutely loses her temper when he shirks on his chores - which he unfortunately does regularly.

4- If your MC / OC could change one thing - anything - what would it be?

She would find a cure for the parasite that converts people into zombies. She’s in no way a scientist, but she wholeheartedly supports her best friend Shannon Fox in her ongoing investigations.

5- What is your MC / OC’s favorite quote or song?

Wild Horses, The Rolling Stones.

It’s a bittersweet reaction, really, having lost both of her fathers in a horrible way (one became a zombie and killed his husband), and more recently her sister. She holds on dearly to the lyrics that “wild horses couldn’t keep me away”. It’s how she feels about Troy, and her friends Eli, Shannon, Angel, little May…

Her favorite quote is more inspirational: “Hope is the thing with feathers that perches in the soul.” – Emily Dickinson

6- Is there anything else you’d like to share about your MC / OC?

I adored the Choices book Wake the Dead. Such an interesting, dark concept, where your choices matter, with tons of potential for world-building… I wanted to create a character that had lived through terrible things, resulting in deep-seated trauma, but at the same time could see the light in the world and continue to strive to better her life and that of those around her. This is how Eva was born!

7- Other facts about Eva

Eva was born close to Reno, Nevada before the zombie apocalypse.

She previously worked in pest control from the age of 18, then became a scout at 25 at her former colony, The Tower.

Eva is dating Troy Hassan, her childhood best friend from her Tower days. This was a slow burn, friendship to love. Troy’s an absolute charmer, knows her better than anyone and is her emotional support. He’s much more carefree, which brings out her lighter side – necessary with all the stress and pressures of running a colony during an apocalypse!

She dearly misses her sister Brynn, who died shortly after escaping the tower. Eva admired her fierceness and how she bravely ventured out as a scout every day to support the colony. Eva hopes to become as tough as her sister.

What are your favourite dragon quest monsters across the entire series?

The first Dragon Quest Monsters game I've ever gotten to play wound up being the first one to leave out exactly the top three I looked forward to getting:

GIANTSLUG/MAULUSC: I'm pickier about slug and snail creatures than you maybe expect but I love the vapid drippy zombie face of the DQ slug. It perfectly captures the appeal of a slug as a monster, a mindless gooey thing that will just eat you without a care. And its classic color scheme is that of a Banana Slug!!

BELZEBUB: I am also picky about fly creatures; usually I want them to have the proboscis present in some way, and the correct number of wings (two). There's something I still love about the toothy mouth of Belzebub however, maybe the way it curls up between the eyes? It just does a good job capturing the feel of a fly's personality I guess.

DARKEYE/EYELASHER: eye creatures can also very easily feel a bit boring to me because I've just seen so, so many of them, but DQ's basic killer eyeball appeals to me a lot with its irregular fungus-like collection of tentacles. The little root branches on "top" are especially cool to me, and sometimes they're the bottom, because they represent where the eyeball attaches to either floors or ceilings! In a few games, they're even encountered as parasites inside bigger monsters!

I used to admire the guidebook to the first two DQ Monsters games as a kid but never had the games themselves, and never got around to any other DQ titles. I just spent my whole life waiting for just the right one where I'd finally get to assemble my three favorites, then finally this new one comes out and has to be the first time these three took a vacation :( But, Dark Prince was at least nice enough to include exactly my next three favorites in the franchise. I went over them already in my DQM Dark Prince post but some people will see this post first so I will have to reintroduce them:

DROHL: droopy flappy membranous mollusk guys, honestly horrible looking in a great way. In 3d games it turns out their helmetlike head spirals in the back like a snail shell! Apparently they're meant to be troll-like beings.

LUNATICK: just a blue fleshy sac thing with gooey antennae, a bunch of tentacles (most of them segmented like worms!) and a little eyeball, perfect, no criticisms, also reminds me of what Berserk considers an "Incubus:"

(Don't worry, Berserk Incubus aren't sex monsters but monsters that give you nightmares and feed on the fear)

TAILEATER/MAD MOLLUSK: I love how pathetic their front face looks, and the whole shape is so pleasantly reminiscent of an abyssal sea cucumber of some kind.

SKULLROO/GUAARDVARK: I didn't even realize this was one of my top favorites until getting it in Dark Prince. It's an unpleasant wrinkly fat aardvark kangaroo thing that just always carries a human skull around. Its profile says they collect them and the one they carry is their favorite! A lot of slightly lower favorites were also left out however, none of these are in Dark Prince but are very high up there to me:

PYURO: what is this thing? I don't know! Different games have categorized it as an insect or a plant. It's a furball with five eyes encircling a butterfly proboscis, two little legs and a big huge ring of flower petals behind it. Very xenobiology.

TONGUELLA: it's kinda like a dumpy, hairless sloth with an aardvark tail with a mushed-in dog face and a giant gross tongue. I guess I just like foul moist beasts. I wish this was a real mammal we had in the world, I bet it'd smell terrible. Feels like a perfect counterpart to Guaardvark.

SLURPERON: it's one tiny pitcher plant with a giant tongue and then it has cool reptilian eyes at the bottom end. So simple and so rad! A fun way to stylize a pitcher plant monster without ripping off Victreebel.

SICKLER: is a little tiny mantis in a robe, like the Tonberry from Final Fantasy but a mantis

RAGIN' CONTAGION: a newer one, a gooey vaporous cyclops ghost that represents disease. In its first appearance as a boss in the series the English localizers decided it should talk like Yosemite Sam. Sure why not!

So I like the new game and it gave me some new favorites like Skellyfish and new appreciation for some others, but oddly it only has my very middle all-time faves

Holy heck. I read your piece and I just had to comment. Your Yandere Alhaitham piece is so good! Your word choices are exquisite, and your descriptions are amazingly detailed. I fell hook, line, and sinker into the story. And the twist at the end was so well executed. I saw it coming and it was so satifying to read, even if I did feel bad for poor reader.

As I read that ending, I did wonder if in some alternate universe (I didn't start Sumeru's archon quest yet), the knowledge capsule reader took was all about Alhaitham, and Alhaitham used that to keep the reader at his side. Instead of reader finding out about him watching them, I imagine it would go the other way, where reader believes Alhaitham would do nothing wrong to them, and Alhaitham uses that to manipulate the reader into falling deeper into him. Lol.

All in all, this is an excellent piece. I look forward to more of your writings.

These are just a few thoughts of mine!

I can imagine Alhaitham being meticulous in crafting this faux knowledge capsule. It has to be perfect. Alhaitham knows exactly every memory he will put into this canned knowledge. He needs it to be mundane enough, filled with tedious meetings and detailed manuscripts to depict his life as the Scribe to make you relaxed, almost bored. Yet sprinkled in has to be just enough childhood memories, eccentric tales, and his day-to-day pastimes. It will leave you intrigued, desiring more. Everything is so calculated, so pristine. Another crucial factor is that he will make sure that the knowledge capsule is completely filled to the brimmed so your mind will be utterly exhausted, leaving you easy to manipulate. Hours and hours of memories of him crammed into your mind in mere seconds will leave you so tired that you will have to lean on his shoulder, thus strengthening your bond. 

There are two main scenarios that Alhaitham predicts. 

The first one is that since Alhaitham centers everything to be just about him and everything to be overall rather ordinary, you feel more safe with him. Every aspect you love about him is just magnified to the max, and because you will still think your stalker is out there, your love for him keeps growing—that desperate need for a safe haven is found with him. You are much more clingy and affectionate. In your eyes, Alhaitham is no predator but a protector. Now, you will quickly approve of ideas you thought were too haste before, such as moving in together. Living together means getting to know so much more about you. Alhaitham can't wait to capitalize off of this. His actual knowledge capsule about you will be constantly updated. Perhaps he will even have to have an entire collection of canned knowledge dedicated to you. 

The second one is that you will fear for your relationship and push everything under the rug, becoming paranoid that Alhaitham will find out about you going through his knowledge capsule, especially when you know he works under the Sages and is privy to confidential information. You become so worried and corrupted, like the scholars who lose their sanity while trying to attune themselves to Irminsul. You feel so guilty that you rummaged through his private belongings and were too curious for your own good, especially when it turned out to be so "innocent." The paranoia truly is parasitic. It feasts on everything, like disgusting mold and mildew. Alhaitham makes sure you are the penitent sinner in this scenario. When you leave Port Ormos and return to Sumeru City, you must constantly be on your best behavior for him wanting to ensure he doesn't leave you because you are scared for a life without him. From your perspective, all Alhaitham has done is treated you well, and you crossed him. This only worsens when Alhaitham rises in the ranks after the final Sumeru Archon Quest, as you feel he is so much better than you in every way conceivable. Alhaitham wastes no time tugging these insecure strings. Moreover, Alhaitham will feign being busy when you want to confess what you did, or if you finally do, he will bluntly shrug it off and say, "Why are you so worried about something like that? You have better things to worry about." It will leave you oddly comforted yet humiliated that you became so restless over how you thought he might react. In the end, all he did was shrug it off. How low did you think of him? This abysmal hole Alhaitham put you in just keeps on growing and growing. 

In conclusion, Alhaitham always wins somehow.
