I work on procreate and mostly just use these two basic ah default brushes. I am sure photoshop equivalents exist for both of them out there somewhere!

And since I work a lot with these two I thought I would give ya some extra insight into how exactly I put them to use :)

The 6B Pencil brush has got to be my all time favourite brush and I use it for literally everything!

From rough sketches..

to lineart..

to colouring and details.

This brush is quite pressure sensitive, so you can achieve many different variations of size in one stroke by changing the amount of pressure you apply by hand. Through it all, it maintains it's relatively rectangular shape and brings with it soft grain like texture.

Come to think of it, I think I drew this whole next piece with only the 6B Pencil, start to finish. I think it really goes to show that in the end, it's not really about what brushes or software you use, but about how you make them work for you and how much fun you have while creating. I find that the drawings I have the most fun with end up being my favourites in the long run.

And to me, the 6B is just a damn fun brush to use!

It is perfect for adding silly little shapes and lines all over the place :)

And the other brush I find myself coming back to is Salamanca from the Painting category.

I use it for filling in bigger areas of colour and just colour blocking in general. I like it's subtle canvas texture and the fact that it is not entirely opaque by default, which allows for interesting variations of hues.

But that is not all! I like to size it down to use it to add details and colour to my portraits. I find that it's softness works really well on faces and it's transparency makes it easier to bring in variations of colour.

And would you look at that! More shapes and lines! It's really all I know how to do haha

At the end of the day, I try to just enjoy the process of drawing as much as I can :)

I find that young digital artists often put a lot of emphasis onto finding the correct drawing software and brushes. And while that is important, I find that it is equally as important to throw caution to the wind sometimes and to just try out new things and to not care so much.

I mean hell, people create masterpieces in MS Paint!

My drawing process usually boils down to simply trying to ensure art stays something fun for me, and these two brushes have helped me achieve that over the years.

Hello!! I have literally no one to share these with so youre getting them :D

I drew 141 with the colours that remind me of them, the only one im like, 100% happy with is gaz. But then again i spent a lot more time on gaz than the others.

Reasons for colours:

Gaz: idk he give purple vibes (purple is my favourite colour, my favourite is also gaz so) its like a regal and just beautiful colour (i actually googles how his hat looked)

Soap: green. Its a bright and vibrant colour, i feel like he's also bright and vibrant. And the yellow pencil i have doesn't show up well so theres that to

Ghost: red. I feel like red is very 2 sided yknow? Like some say it represents anger and some say it represents love and i feel like the contrast of not only that but also the contrast of ghost to simon?? I dont know if you get what i mean

Price: (never drawing him again, his beard and hat are the worst thing i have drawn recently) orange feels warm but also explosive. A bit like price is in crcb, but also just in the games in general. Like fire yknow? Very beautiful and elegant but also a very dangerous thing (i also had to add his rank cause it annoyed me that he was gonna be thenonly one with 2 names so no. Not happening)

I fully agree Gaz gives purple vibes. I may be biased because purple is my favorite color, but I do agree. Johnny does give green vibes too. It can be a very earthy, grounding color but it can also be super vibrant and showy and I think that fits him really well.

I fully agree with red Simon. It's such a bright color but at the same time it represents so many things. Anger, love, blood. Even wine can be red. It's so versatile and I think that fits Simon perfectly. Price gives orange vibes. That's all I have to say about that lol.

A Love Letter to The Early 2010s

Celebrating its comeback into the fashion trend cycle.

This is the first post under my publication The Encomiast.

Over the past few months, I’ve been seeing an increasing amount of nostalgia posts for the early 2010s pop up on my social media feeds. Specifically, the type of early 2010s ‘aesthetic’ characterised by neon colours, carefree divas and prime-time radio pop. That's the era I remember most clearly, back in elementary school (I was born in 2006). I had always looked at this era and its visuals fondly, even before social media got a hold of it. I’d like to take a look at this time again, mainly through its fashion, accessories, and the general visual that we’ve just begun to adore again.

The Clothes

I’ve prepared this collage to show what I vividly remember from this era. These aren’t my images (I collected them from Pinterest, and you can find the board here with many more images) but these hot-coloured floral print catchy-slogan chevron-galaxy-print clothes were exactly what I wore, or aspired to wear.

Admittedly, I never had many opportunities to wear these types of clothes outdoors since my school had a uniform. What (from this collage, atleast) I recall wearing the most was the Hollister/Abercombie jacket. As shown, I’m pretty sure it was this hot pink colour with a white fur on the inside. Some students would wear white or navy blue, to match our uniform. The cool kids who wore a Hollister jacket rather than the school jacket. It was those same cool kids who would continue to do so even after my school implemented a useless ban on it. However, no one really stepped into the heavy musky scented dark space of an Abrecombie store to buy these. No, they always just popped up in the closet, ready to be worn for cold school mornings.

Usually when most people think of the ‘preppy’ era of the early 2010s, they think of galaxy-printed anything. Shirts, leggings, bags, even pencil cases. I don’t recall seeing much of that, to be honest. Maybe on accessories, but not really clothing. Most clothing I recall were either solid colours (always either hot pink, bright teal, or pastel coral) or with floral print. The flowers shown were always daisies, or other ‘dainty’ and ‘feminine’ flowers.

One of the outfits I distinctly remember wearing around this time had a small daisy printed on a white shirt with these oddly shaped flowy sleeves that only went above my elbows (does that make it a short-sleeve or a long-sleeve?). I paired it with these skin-tight bright yellow jeans; my favorite color at the time. Very awkward looking with my jet-black hair, but it made me feel like I was just as ‘fashionable’ as the picture-perfect girls I saw online.

Another outfit I remember donning was to the airport, perhaps around 2016 but still quite in-line with the trends of the earlier years of the past decade. It was a loose black cotton sports jersey with white accents paired with skinny jeans with vertical black and white lines. Very matchy-matchy. When I look back at these outfits, I admittedly heavily cringe. But at these moments, I truly had some sort of pride in my ‘eye’ for fashion.

These outfits, albeit odd, must have come to me from all the Youtubers I watched. One of them, who I deeply aspired to imitate, was Seven Super Girls. They were a group of tween girls making YouTube videos about their lives, fashion trends, room tours, etc. It was these girls that showed younger me how to be ‘fashionable’ around this era. I remember one of the girl’s rooms had striped walls with hot pink accents. To say I was jealous was an understatement.

Another Youtuber I recall influencing my fashion choices was iiSuperWomanii, also known as Lily Singh (what's up with all the Superman references?). She had the ‘cooler’ side of early 2010s fashion, with t-shirts decorated with cool slogans and snapback hats. I had one too, but instead of ‘Dope’ or ‘Swag’ or ‘Yolo’ written on it, it was ‘Kuwait’, my country.

 These YouTubers were one of my first openings into the world of fashion and styling. I, and most likely anyone who was online around this time, tried to copy and imitate them. Perhaps whatever ‘coolness’ they sold through the lens would trickle down onto us.

The Accessories

I think the reason why accessories from this point in time were so ‘iconic’ was that it all really revolved around mascots, symbols, logos, icons, and texts. It's quite different from today’s popular ‘sleek minimalist’ accessories that are simply plain gold or silver jewellery. There was always a certain reference or bold design that was involved in bracelets and necklaces of the early 2010s. It made it so your personality and interests were on full display, because ‘geeky’ interests popping up on merchandise started becoming a trend, thanks to websites like Tumblr.

Things I distinctly remember from my early childhood were chunky character watches. If you rummage through the back of my closet, you’ll find a plastic IKEA drawer filled with broken watches adorned with the faces of Hannah Montana, Spongebob, Dora, and even Marionette from Miraculous Ladybug. Truly, the absolute pinnacle of fashion for a six-year-old girl.

Speaking of first grade, the owl trend back then even managed to hit the walls of my first-grade classroom. My teacher, Ms. Nicole, said that she loved owls. So naturally, there were owl puns on every whiteboard in the class, owl line art was present in the parent’s newsletter every week, and she wore a long owl necklace everyday to school.

I can name a billion more animals or vague symbols of 2010s culture that were made into jewellery. The Union Jack was a popular one, quite in-line with the rise of One Direction. Hello Kitty (and cats in general) as well, but they’ve been around way before (and after) the 2010s. Danbo was another one I remember clearly. It was a small cardboard robot that became a popular figurine for photography. I always thought it was a mascot for Amazon, but it’s actually from a Japanese manga series.

Emojis became popular clothing and accessory items as well. I think I remember having emoji pins on my middle-school backpack, for some reason. The old designs have a skeuomorphic shading to them that made them quite the product of their time. No wonder images of the old Emojis spark so many memories for me, the era was so visually vivid even the way the digital faces were shaded remains in my mind!

There is much more to the culture of the early 2010s, both in general and in my memories. But I’ve decided to just highlight one aspect of it. I’d like to encourage you to reflect on your own memories of a popular era or aesthetic, and not just rely on our lens of it from today. There’s something quite special in the unique recollection of faint visuals cues from different eyes. That uniqueness is what makes each person’s nostalgia their own, belonging to them and them alone.

Because of my sporadic drawing, I just picked 12 pieces of mine, spread out across this year, that i felt had an impact or shows an one on my overall artistic style, from the first time I've experimented with something, and when i solidified it.

Not only is this is representation of me getting into WOTR, its one of the first times i did smoother and softer shading, something i haven't really done since. Additional, i can easily see the line between the metals i rendered here and Cecio & Celia's more stylized metallic elements. I miss Alaun, he was ahead of his time as a good kc of mine. its a fairly big full piece, and one I'm still proud and fond of today!

Estinian! god i miss ffxiv... Here is the root of my bright idea to use pencil brushes for colored shading, to get a textured gradient, and i used it in the metallic golds. its also my biggest art post on this blog! it is a big & detailed piece, and seemed daunting at the time, but i just put in the time, and was rewarded for trying to make sense of the armor [i used my own dragoon as a model for how thing actually interacted & what was what] Im still stupidly proud of it. it was my second piece of FFXIV fanart, and the beginning of many more!

Given this is about drawings that have impacted me, i think this one is an easy contender for the one that's done so the most. Drawing Mura reminded me how much i loved fashion & clothing, and drawing it! I've always has a tremendous amount of fun with her drawings, and it all started here!! Mura also was the first time i repeatedly used a colour pallet for a character, with her pinks and purples now ingrained into my mind!

Out of all my drawings, Estinian and Mura are tied for how much ive drawn them, which Estinian has an advantage due to my large bank of FFXIV screenshots & my redraws thereof. This was great fun, not only for understanding the armor better, but having fun experimenting in colour pallets! something i can see has carried on into my non-literaly coloured Celia & Cecio drawings!

My first head only drawing in a long time, and somewhere where i experimented with coloring, as well as the introduction of Muras netted and braided hairstyle! in fact, you can see the visible brush strokes as what would eventually be the stylized shading used in my more recent portraits! The shattered stained glass. looks cool as hell. and was my first time majorly experimenting with layer options, something that would become very common for me.

the limited colour pallet, the non literal colours, the sketch peeking through, the shading on both clothing and skin, the hair? this is like the payoff to all theses previous drawings. i used a different pencil brush, and goodbye 6b and hellooo procto pencil!!!!

If the previous drawing was the payoff, this is one of the stages of refinement, taking the new stylized skin shading and applying it to a portrait where the face is the focus, and damn!! Cecio<3

A compositional outlier, this piece earned its place for me revising what has to be one of the most drawn compositions of mine - the eye. In many ways its the closing loop of a full circle, the brushstrokes exactly how i would shade with my pencil on paper, the lines and movements coming naturally to me, in an entirely different medium. the main difference is colour, while my pencil drawings were firmly grayscale and i resisted all attempts to get me to use colour, this is practically a sunset, using my knowledge of not just colour but layer filters to create bright and overly saturated variations. full circle, just add colour.

And the final piece! a portrait of Cecio, showing off all i have developed, from the metallics, to the stylized shading, colour pallets, the use of filters for alternate versions, the hair, the face, the new brush!!! its not my last drawing of 2023, but its a fitting end.

if you will permit me to get sappy, 2023 has been hell of a year, but damn if it hasn't been pointing upwards. in 2023 i came to understand i was disabled, and my whole life changed course. My art became not just a hobby or skill of mine, but will be my main source of income once i graduate. my existing friendships have strengthened, and so have my online ones, ive met so many new and awesome people. seeing everyone's tags, comments and reactions to my art has been amazing, and thank you all for that. i have seen so many amazing artists and writers who inspired me to better myself, and also to focus on what makes me unique.

2023 has been a hell of a year, but thanks in no small part to some of the most amazing people i've had the privilege of knowing, it been a damn good one.

its been tough, coming to realize your physically disabled and having to rewrite your life plan was hard. its been overall up, but there have been some spikes down. im aware, that every year i say i cant get happier, and then i do, i break though another barrier, reach another high.

im not saying that this year, because i know next year will be better, and the year after that, as i have the opportunity to steer my own life, it will improve in ways i cant even think of now.

I love the way you draw fire though! and your colouring is beautiful, I was wondering if there are any tips you could give for colouring?

OMG THANK YOU SO SO MUCH!!! ;A; i'm still figuring out how drawing fire works tho and the feedback i got was super helpfull and got me a step closer to it i think!! during my last 2 drawings i've always had some super helpful feedback about the fire so i feel really blessed about that~ as for the colouring tips, well these are some of the tricks and methods i use;

1- instead of using a darker colour for the shading i just use a more saturated colour, kinda like this;

the added saturation makes the colour appear darker when in reality it's not! think about it like colouring traditionally with colour pencils. when you use a colour pencil the places where you added a lot of pressure look much darker than the places where you added only very little pressure - despite it being one and the same colour! done with the same pencil! the reason it appears darker is because it simply just has more pigment. that's what we're doing here too, we're making the color appear darker by adding more pigment.

BUT

if we just simply stick with the exact same hue then the colouring would look bright and vivid - but still be horribly boring. so i play around with the hue too!!

the circle determines the hue you're selecting and the colors you see there are all at 0% darkness but 100% saturation despite them, technically, being equally light/dark according to the software they still look differently dark rotate the hue in the direction of blue/purple for the shadows and in the direction for yellow to select the colours for the highlights

blue, purple and red are the best colours to shade white with, for black however it'd stick to blue or else it stops looking like black and starts looking like a very dark colour instead

2- give each colour it's own layer.

that way, if you notice halfway through that the colours you've chosen don't look so good together you can still make adjustements and edit every single colour without losing any of the progress you've done with the shading (note: do all of the shading on the same!!! layer as the base colour tho!!!)

many artists solve this issue by using predetermined colour palettes, that way they're guaranteed that the colours look good toghether but colour palettes save absolutely no time at all (adjusting the colours of a layer takes only a few seconds) and are extremely limiting when colouring so i just don't see any benefit to them

3- USE THE RIGHT BRUSH!!!! your choice of brushes can honestly make or break the colouring. the impact they have should not be underestimated, it's huge. which brush is best for you depends on your artstyle but personally i think brushes that simulate either watercolours or copic markers are the best ones.

if you use a software where it's possible to use custom brushes made by fellow artists then PLEASE do that. most art software comes with awful default brushes, and even for those that come with decent default brushes (such as photoshop) most free custom brushes made by fellow artists are still so much better than the default brushes that they're worlds apart Clip Studio Paint (the software i use) has an assets "store" where you can download brushes made by fellow users. for other art software i'd recommend checking out deviantart for user made custom brushes if it's a software that existed before the downfall of deviantart. it's a huge goldmine filled with insanely amazing brushes for many different types of software. personally i use a brush called froggy pencil for the colouring 4- add overlay layers to your art after finishing with the colouring. they can make a drawing really come to live and it's insane just HOW much they add to a drawing. usually i always either use a gradient, a solid colour or a soft airbrushed colour on the overlays and let them do their magic.

to show just how much of a difference overlay layers make; here's a comparision between my most recent drawing - and a version of the same drawing where i removed all overlay layers. see the difference?

I played football as a kid, as all the kids, if you didn't at least once you were a weirdo (spain). Also as a teen I played basketball, badminton and volleyball... that was my favourite but I would prefer to done individual sports tho.

Their eyese, makeup, beard, and hair etc. Also.. pecs and legs🫣

7. scary movies or happy endings?

Scary movies, I always loved them since the first time I watched one with 8 years (poltergeist), after that it came many favourites"the grudge (all american and japanese), the Dawn of the death, the blair wicth project, the cabin in the woods", all "evil dead" saga stuff..." and many others, and of course... I love also the "scary movie" saga.

8. any special talents?

Drawing and painting, specially traditional artwork, I love paint with watercolors, but I always prefer to do pencil [black and white] or ink and markers for colors. I also do a lot of photoshop and 3D with blender... also studied

Spain, andalusia, cordoba, been all my life here, yet I've always felt like I'm more of a world citizen, I don't like patriotism and nationalism, it's all religions but workshiping states.

Miguel is such a loveable grumpy cat, and its so refreshing to see him be the smaller one in a ship.

Admittedly I mainly watch the movies and only a few comics, but Venom has a ranking system??? Eddie is the only one to get full stars???? Thats. Thats true love right there. Also whats this about Eddie being in charge of a whole venom-society?? Did not know about that (also hard to imagine) but feel free to talk about it. Imagine Miguel and Eddie bonding over being the de facto leader (leading the spiders must be a lot harder than leading the symbiote hivemind)

My Venom design is mostly inspired by the '94 Spiderman the animated series Venom, Ivan Fiorelli, Rian Gonzales, Gurihiru and overall orcas in general.

If I were to describe my design rules for Venom he'd have a big bulky body with stylized proportions, an orca styled face with a bigger lower jaw to fit more then 1 row of teeth, and his color is a solid black with bright colorful pencil textured highlights.

I have this headcanon Miguel might have discomfort in his current height, according to the wiki he's 5'10 but in ATSV he's 6'9 so I wonder if he ever misses being his old height. Like there's not that many ppl that exists that can fully envelop him a hug and make him feel comforted. Plus I can imagine how often he needs to remember to duck under a doorway or else he'll bonk his forehead, or when he's at a hotel and the showerhead is like at his chin level.

Oh that makes me happy to hear, my first intro to Venom was the infamous '07 Spiderman 3 movie, so I'm glad to hear new fans get this fun intro to this character via the 2018 Venom movie. While I've been a lowkey fan of Venom I didn't do a full deep dive into his comics until 2021 with the comic Venom Verse as the first one. I've read a ton but I haven't read any of the early issues since those comics are v outdated by now and some of the info might have been retconned/rewritten. I'd recommend finding a reading list if you'd like to read more self contained stories or a full saga line of connected stories. Feel free to pick/choose what comics you consider as canon or not, cause not all comics are great and sometimes one doesn't like a specific writer for a run 🤷‍♀️

The ranking system is a compatibility rank it's seen in Venom: The End (A warning there is body horror/ imagery of Eddie withering away which made me uncomfy so I'm letting you know) I didn't much care for the plot of that comic but I do enjoy this ranking system as it shows Venom's preference when it comes to hosts. He sees most hosts as pretty good but Eddie is the perfect host according to him u wu 💕

As for Eddie being the head of the symbiote hivemind it's seen in the aftermath of the MASSIVE King in Black saga. After defeating the old head/creator of symbiotes Knull ,Eddie takes his role as the head. It's moreso a hivemind where he can control of any symbiote with consent and can communicate across all of them no matter where they are. However this does strain his physical body and he ages quickly and he dies via explosion. Venom is currently with his son Dylan atm while Eddie is in some sort of space/time limbo. I did fall off a bit on my reading towards the newer comics so here's where my knowledge on this run ends. I'd find pics but I'm feeling lazy rn

Miguel def has a tough job as he has to manage all these different versions of Spiderman and maintain the multiverse on top of making sure none glitch out of existence if those bands get messed up. He can't just up and leave he feels personally responsible due to his past actions. Eddie at this point is like in charge of running the universe but he's stuck in that position he can't quit or else the cosmos ends and he'll be replaced by another King in Black. They explain no matter what Eddie will always end up here someway or another.

Miguel is bound by his sense of duty, his responsibility to ensure the another universe will not end in the same way like his daughter's did. Eddie is bound by The Eventuality, he will always end up as the next King in Black even though he knows he can not handle it. To me it sounds like a lonely and stressful existence to be such a position of power yet they don't have the power to just go home and live a peaceful life with their loved ones like everyone else.

I'm having the worst day I've had in months, so many things I hoped would work out failed today, literal years of effort and progress down the drain like it's nothing. I'm struggling to come to terms with it, that it's all really gone.

It's so simple, a single drawing, but fuck it's making me smile. I can clearly see the pencil colourings, each line that was placed down and imagining someone taking the time to draw this and also fully colour it is beyond any kindness I could ask for.

The eyes, I really like them. The shape based on Sol's heavy cat-like eyeshadow. You've simplified it into a single shape it's really endearing. I love the flower, the small petals in the middle that turn into the larger blossoming ones at the side.

Their clothes, hair, necklace, and scales. It's all so perfect, lazy or not, I adore it. I especially love that stray line of red next to their leg, I can imagine you testing the colours, maybe or accidentally drawing it. It's more beautiful because of how earnest it is. I love their hands and how much they look like a precious huggable doll, I can imagine them sitting on overlarge plastic kiddie chairs at princess tea parties. Maybe their doll set comes with a small dragon like how some dolls come with a puppy in their plastic handbag.

Thanks for making me smile on a day like this. I was planning to reply to the asks and post some of my drafts before going to sleep so this day can finally end. This simple gesture comforted me in ways I can't describe.

Have a winter-themed chapter of a longer Swatchton fic previously posted on AO3. The premise is based on Penbwl's Spamsician AU and set in the future in Castle Town. Swatch and Spamton are both elderly; the younger Swatchlings have taken over the Color Cafe. Swatch is free to create art to their heart's content. Spamton in this AU glitches in song lyrics rather than in ads and l33tspeak; he still plays piano and sings, but he's getting a bit arthritic.

One of the drawbacks of being married to a visual artist was that they sometimes dragged their partner into situations that weren't always comfortable, just so they could "soak up inspiration".

Fortunately for Spamton, that drawback was negated by the fact that the visual artist he was married to was Swatch, who also happened to be a textile artist.

And one of the many benefits to having Swatch as a partner was that there seemed to be a never-ending supply of knitted goods in the apartment they shared. This never-ending supply stood Spamton in good stead on this cold winter night as he and Swatch sat together in the porch swing set up on the balcony outside Swatch’s studio.  They were both swaddled in sweaters, scarves, hats, and afghans, with two tasques and a phearrette snuggled up on their laps. Meta4 and SimiLee each had their own sweaters in dark blue and white stripes; Slinky had a solid sweater in periwinkle stretching over the pneumatic tube that was her middle, leaving her back legs and her wire-coil tail swinging free and dangling off the edge of the swing cushion.

The sky above Castle Town was awash with the starscape that changed so slowly it seemed to never change at all, other than some lights varying their sparke. The warm lamp-glow spilling from the studio through the sliding glass doors was apparently enough for Swatch to see by, because the pencil in their hand was virtually flying over the pad of paper balanced on the knee that was not claimed by a trilling SimiLee.

Spamton loved watching Swatch work on their art; it was so different from what he did while he was composing at the piano or performing on stage. Spamton’s music burst out of him, pulled out of his bones and blood; Swatch’s paintings seemed to take form from the quiet introspective center of their mind. That wasn’t to say that Spamton’s music didn’t have moments of sweetness and delicacy, or that Swatch’s canvases didn’t have great splashes of fierceness and flamboyance.  But the sheer focus that Swatch put into their creation looked to Spamton as though his husband had to go inward rather than outward to express themself.

Tonight Swatch was sketching the sky above them, and then adding great swirls of stars and clouds. Spamton looked forward to seeing the colours Swatch would use when they transformed the sketch into paint. Silver? Gold? Blue? Purple?  Probably all of those colours and more.

Without consciously intending to do so, he started to sing a Lightner song under his breath, “Now the starlight which has found me/Lost for a million years/Tries to linger as it fills my eyes/'Tll it disappears/Could it be that somebody else is/Looking into my mind/Some other place/Somewhere/Some other time.’

Swatch turned their head slightly toward Spamton when some of the words caught their attention, but they still continued to draw as they asked their husband, “Do you ever think that there might be other worlds out there, not just the Lightners’ world? Worlds where there could be a different you and a different me?”

“Different how?” 

“Hmmmm. If each one of those stars has a world around it, how different would you and I be? Is there a world where you’re a tasque and I’m a maus? Is there a world where we’re two pirate captains on one ship? Is there a world where I’m a prince like Ralsei and you’re the rose I keep under glass? Is there a world where you’re the butler and I’m the salesman? Is there..” Swatch trailed off, lost in thought, and their pencil slowed.

Spamton didn’t have to think long before answering. “[[We may be planetary, but it's time we had some suns.]] If there are lots of other yous and lots of other mes, I’d hope they’re all [[so happy together]] as we are.” He gently took the pencil out of Swatch’s hand and leaned over to kiss his husband on the side of their beak.

The painting, when it was completed a few weeks later, showed shapes in the star patterns, shapes that resembled a multitude of Swatches and an equal multitude of Spamtons, each reaching out to one another across the vastness of the night sky.

It's 3. something am but my brain is full of ideas and holidays are closing in by the second maybe on how to gift a journal or some kind of useful stationery for like folks who enjoy this form of art.... cuz let's be honest here this is art and its so damn personal I've never ever seen journals that look alike.

Hello! To do a very specific gift ideas post I would need more time to look for things and more references I think, and I wouldn't have enough time now (I am annotating this on my bujo for next year), but I can write down a few tips on here in case someone needs last minute help!

Gift ideas/tips for people who love journaling:

my top idea is to go in local stores, try to avoid super big chains of stores, this way you might find something unique that the person you are shopping for wouldn't have otherwise found. There's plenty of places with very cool journals, both handmade or just of smaller brands that you don't see everywhere.

if you know well the person you are getting a gift for you can go two ways: either get them something you know they use A LOT, or go the opposite and get them something totally out of their comfort zone. This could be a great challenge for them to try new things, sometimes we need a little push to try new stuff, and that's a gift itself in my opinion.

a personal favourite of mine are highlighters so I could never not recommend getting a nice pack of new highlighters to someone, I am particularly fond of pastel colours because they are amazing both for journaling and for school notes and book annotations.

maybe a nice pencil case could be a nice gift too, there's so many options out there you will surely find something for everyone's taste

a less common thing could also be a journal sleeve, there's book sleeves online that are super cool and protect your book covers from being damaged in your bag/backpack. You could pick one up with the purpuse of protecting the journal of the person you are shopping for.

this is more on the bookish side of things, but it was really appreciated by my best friend last year. I created for her a book annotating starter pack, to go alongside the custom reading journal I made her. I got her a nice pencil, an highlighter, some colorful post it notes and tabs and a tiny additional notebook to write all her favourite quotes on. I got everything in the same colour so it looked really thought out, but it was a quite cheap but effective gift.

going back to journaling, one thing I m considering for this same friend this year is a journaling prompt jar. You could also do this in another format, but it can be nice to just write down very random journaling prompts on pieces of paper for when your friend is out of ideas. You could do a themed thing, like self care prompts with a self care journal maybe.

talking about a self care journal, this is something you could do for a friend with very little effort. You get a pretty journal whatever you prefer, and then you can create different sections for your friend. Write in for them self care ideas, write inspiring quotes in it, create a spread in which they can write down compliments people give them so that they are "forced" to practiced a bit of self worth. When I created one in the past for someone who was really struggling at the time I had also wrote down a very random list of small things to appreaciate in life even in bad days, like the feeling of getting home when it's cold outside, all these little things you tend to forget about when your mental health is not at its best. There's plenty ideas for a self care journal (in the future I could do a specific post, although I don't keep one myself).

one last tip is to just go around stores without a clear idea and see what artistic tools make you think of this person. You see a nice set of pencils in coulours that remind you of them? Get that. Whatever you see that makes you think of this person is probably a good idea, in my opinion some of the best gifts are the most randm. And again always keep in mind that whatevr you get for this person you can probably custum in very easy ways to make it perfect for them. I personally really like to make things as much as I can instead of buying them because I think the time I put into crafting these things for people shows how much I care for them, it does not have to be perfect, in fact it has to be made with love and than believe me it will be perfect.

These are all the ideas that came to my mind right away, I hope it might be helpful for someone. I might do a more researched and structured post next year. If you need help with more specific things send me an ask and I'll do my best to help!

I saw an ask where someone asked you about the markers you use for your drawings (which btw are always so amazing and cute, I love them 💖), what kind of markers are they?? I think there's alcohol based ones and (I may be wrong) water ones?? I've been wanting to use some of those for a while because they apparently blend nicely??

I bought a little set of water(?) based markers yesterday, with mostly brown colors that I could use for darker skin tones. I'm used to colored pencils (is that how you call them in english??) so I don't really know how to use them without making a mess. Do you have any tips?? If so, please tell me, I'd love to learn more about my little art tools!! 😊💖

Hi! So first thank you!💝 now, I believe the markers from that ask are water based! water based markers are very nice but in my case I can only layer on top of them around 3-4 ish times before the paper starts getting kinda bad and if I layer over them a lot more it might break or get a weird texture, alcohol based markers are better at that and blend a bit more easily in my opinion, but both can do a good job regardless, you just have to be a lil bit more careful with water based ones

the more you layer on top of them the darker the colour will be also, colour pencils usually stay in the same-ish colour so that's a big difference I think, markers are also very good for layering random colours lol, I believe some colour pencils(not all of them) straight up don't allow me to layer a lot of colours on top of the base one so that's another difference

Also if you want a good blend try to blend the colours as soon as possible! I think it kinda makes it easier and better personally

Just in case you have alcohol based ones, remember to leave a little space between the lineart and the place you are colouring since they kinda expand(? after colouring, otherwise it will go over the lineart and will colour outside of it

Anyways I could recommend you to look up some YouTube videos for this too, there are many helpful ones and i think video tutorials will explain a lot more in a better way than me 😅 good luck and enjoy your little art tools!💕
