For Amai mask, he's an idol and he dresses the part, so even when I didn't like him a lot in the start I had to admit he is pretty refreshing to see, he serves and eats and leave no crumbs and we're all for that. 🥺

I think a proper post abt him would be the longest since he changes outfits each time and is flexible in clothing styles oh and he also has different haircuts! Yeah, that's def a character that pleases my Aesthetic loving side a lot. Besides being pretty and sophisticated (where the natural need to accentuate his beauty may come) he's actually very intriguing and mysterious; it's as if we don't know the real him at all, he may dress to impress bcz he just wants to (he does hate ugliness huh) , or cuz' that's a part of his job and it's always nice but it doesn't say much about his personality or himself as a person.

Honestly looking forward to learn more about him, the guy got severe anger issues, his ability seem interesting and I wonder what's his beef with Blast is?? So many questions surrounding him, it makes you wonder what does that pretty façade hide.

let's start with some fun facts:

when I first started writing BOTRD, it was entirely in Rosalie's pov and it was intended to be a straightforward romance (i refer to this as draft zero). i got about 80% of the way in and then realized 1) it's not really romantic at all and girlie needs to get out of this situation and 2) there was another story hidden in Theodore's pov that i wanted to explore

the first completed draft is sitting at 95,267 words and is organized into acts and scenes, not chapters. here are the names of the first scenes from each act (only used for outlining purposes):

act 1: "sunrise" act 2A: "old flame" act 2B: "ten seconds" act 3: "mouse thunder storm"

after finishing the first draft, i jumped straight into writing the prequel, Judas Wept. and im so glad i did! it really influenced how i'm approaching future drafts (and it gave us Elias! i love Elias!)

my favorite character to write dialogue for is Emily. my favorite character to write period is Marcella

some rapid fire lore!

at the beginning of botrd, Theodore has consumed 2 souls: the soul of the person that killed him, and Andrew's. at the end, he's got around 6,000 (most from Mortae voluntarily sacrificing themselves to make him OP)

Marcella only targets men due to her past trauma and a desire to protect young women. she thinks it's funny when they beg. she has no qualms with murder or lawlessness. if she had Theodore's abilities, we wouldn't have a story. she would've dealt with this mess a century ago

Rosalie is very subdued and passive in act 1. she thinks more than she speaks or acts in her first few POV chapters. stuck with one foot in the past kinda thing. once she starts processing her grief, she becomes more of an active participant (which is not necessarily a good thing! but! she's healing!)

Azmaveth has a whole secret backstory (Uriel, too! i dont know if we ever unlock that one on page) but basically: he lost a child, so now he's ultra protective of his wards (Theodore and Marcella) BUT he has to balance that with his loyalty towards Morrigan so she doesn't come by and just slaughter all of them

i affectionately refer to Rosalie's friends as "the humans" and they're a bunch of goobs. Mike is a golden retriever. James is a chihuahua. Henry is a dachshund. Emily isn't a dog, she's a mountain lion

💜Jacks pov were pure emotional damage and I absolutely digged it

🍎I just loved the romance, the angst, the pining, the ending for Evajacks. I was surprised to see people who weren't fan of Jacks pov - the way they were one of the best imo.

🍎We did get crumbs of his past, I actually was satisfied with that especially when you know he did it so castor/chaos wouldn't be alone🥺

🍎Honestly for me it was enough when it comes to backstory, we also learnt how strong Jacks feelings for Eva were. When I tell you the man did everything so that she would be safe even if it means he would never feel anything by burning his heart (literary) 😭

🍎Jacks was absolute menace in this book😂, I absolutely loved every time he made Apollo nervous even when he wasn't there. Him breaking Apollo nose was💯

🦊I absolutely loved Evangeline in this book, she annoyed me a little at the start of tbona as she was stubborn. But here she proved she has changed and learnt for her mistakes, heck she even had an amazing character development. I loved how confident she was even without her memories, she was strong🔥

🦊I loved when she slapped Apollo 10/10 moment (it reminded of Rosaline slapping Romeo in go away Romeo, great webtoon btw)

🦊🍎I am so glad they got their happily ever after, they way I was worried they wouldn't. Each time I was scared for them, they really deserved it🥺❤️

🤡Apollo, oh god he was such a clown from the start to finish. I actually found his povs interesting tbh, he really lost himself somewhere in the way. I actually had a good laugh when his plans failed, at the same time at times he was kinda psycho and scary. Overall not bad villain essence

🐉Okay but Lala was so cool, she had brief appearance but I loved all the scenes with her. Her and Eva going on a trip to retrieve Jacks heart was fire🔥

🐉Lala and Castor ??? Unexpected but not unwelcome, actually a spin-off of their story would be lit like the tension😳. Also I think Lala's story as the Unwed Bride would be interesting to explore

🐉Which leads me to a question of besties going on trips are need and don't get me wrong partners to lovers or enemies to lovers on a quest are my jam. But we need more bffs going on quests😍

💜Aurora was absolutely evil, now it was shocking to learn she was the reason for Jacks curse, but honestly I didn't mean it. Like she was the ultimate mean girl. I hope we will see more of the Valors.

🍎🤔Now we didn't get the apple lore, although I read somewhere that apples were used to calm Jacks urges, so I guess it makes sense. Perhaps we will learn more in the owlcrate alternative ending

💘The alternative endings were such a gems, a pity there are not part of the main story (btw they can be found in tumblr, the only missing one is from the owlcrate edition)

Overall, it was such a painful beautiful and fun ride. I enjoyed it a lot, I am looking forward to Stephan Garber's next books🥰

THEY MADE ME DISLIKE CARMY. WHAT THE FUCK? WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK. HE is the LOML. (I think I can fix him 🥺). He is a dick this season. He has had his dickhead moments past seasons BUT he has always had redeeming characteristics or he seemed like he cared. I get he is ALL in for getting the Michelin star for his bestie / platonic soulmate but he is so lost in his perfection he’s not listening. He’s not collaborating. He is not nurturing his staff. It’s him against his everyone. That’s why the vibes are fucking off this scene. He is changing the chemistry in the worst possible way. Like 3 staff quit on one night.

How do they go from finishing each other’s sentences / recipe ideas to carmy cutting off Sydney and screaming at Tina????? He was nice to Marcus and then never really spoke to him the rest of the season. I’m glad Cicero called him the fuck out because nobody else was. Yes I know Richie was but because of their conflict and history Carmy was never going to take constructive criticism from RICHIE.

DO NOT talk to me about Carmy and Richie. I thought after Carmy’s voicemail episode one things would have be squashed and they’d be repairing their relationship. THE ONLY FUCKING CRUMB OF RESOLUTION THEY COULD’VE GIVEN US WAS THIS AND THEY DID NOT. I feel like if carmy didn’t quit smoking this season they could’ve talked it out during a smoke break. That’s where they have all their deep chats.

Fuck the computer. Natalie handing him is ass when he suggests to fire Marcus? EAT HIM UP.

Carmy’s idea for a new menu every single fucking day? INSANITY. yeah no wonder they’re burning through money and killing Cicero. Also why don’t Sydney call Cicero “Cicero”? I get she can’t call him “unc” or “uncle” but mister whatever was way too formal. Yikes.

The only good development was Ebra doing the sandwich window and getting help AND AS CICERO SAID THATS THE ONLY PART OF BUSINESS MAKING ANY FUCKING MONEY.

I am glad we got a Tina episode and Ayo directed it? She’s cooking with gas. MMMM. It was good. The immediate connection between mikey and Tina. *chef’s kiss*

I wanted more Manny. More Angel. More Ebra. More sweeps / Gary. We get Marcus turning inward because he’s mourning but he’s barely in this season either. What did we get instead? More fucking faks. I love Neil. I do but HE WAS ENOUGH.

THEM and NOT Natalie’s actually fucking family going to the hospital to see the baby?! I’m not even a kids person irl or in fiction but this was egregious. They even set up the phone thing and I wanted a chaotic shut down of the bear mid service when they find out, with carmy fucking chain smoking as he runs to the car climbing over Richie to get in to see his fucking niece. Even all the bear staff blurry and out of focus (the shot of the faks and Donna was right in front of the window so I expected an allusion to everyone coming in) running into the hospital in a frenzy with balloons and shit. But the faks comes into the waiting room and sit with Donna and the episode just fucking ends? And then we don’t see Natalie for the rest of the season? Loved the Nat and Pete moment in the hospital room. They’re so cute and positive.

Carmy doesn’t see the baby after that either. Like SYDNEY brings food and NOT Carmy. Carmy’s love language is food so he could’ve made the fucking food and gone with Sydney and been on his bullshit in the car like “I can’t go in there after I missed the birth! I’m an ass.” and Sydney could’ve dragged his ass out saying “yeah you are and need to start being a better fucking person. To her and to me. Dickhead.” And again NOT RICHIE. Richie would’ve been so cute with the baby.

The faks and the cameos were distracting. UGH. The writing was not it this season. My heart broke when that other guy offered Sydney a better partnership. The first time she had to be reminded to sign the docusign. The doom set in for me.

Carmy had like a handful of scenes this season outside of the bear. And it seems so much more apparent this season. Like his work is his life. HIS ENTIRE BEING. From the start he’s been like this but s3 he is always in the kitchen. Season 1 he was in the front, he was smoking in the back, he was at his fucking apartment. He was at Sugar’s. He was running around the city. Like one scene of him at a meeting and him at his apartment and the finale. I get he’s regressed this whole season but it’s so sad after his growth in the first part of season 2. The more I think about it, this is a bad take but he is so 2D and insular this season.

The finale. UGH. Carmy confronting his dickhead boss and getting nothing and him shedding a tear? UGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. Speaking to Andrea outside. I wish it had just cut to him and Sydney talking and her telling him she’s leaving and that being how the season ends. And carmy is left devastated and raw and alone and then he gets the notification about the mixed review with the bear in the background roaring.

Lowkey lowkey LOWKEY I didn’t mind Claire as a concept. Because Claire made Carmy happy... And all I want is for Carmy to be happy and at peace. Can I defend her characterisation? No. Is she even a real character? Not really. But I get why he says she is his peace. She is the only part of his life that isn’t chaos. (Does the panic attack scene disprove this? Yes and this also muddies the water because it implies sydcarmy and now they’re like no sydcarmy EVER.) Yes ok Sydney is too but Sydney is connected to the bear. To restaurants. To his most recent trauma. And Claire is connected his past trauma. His childhood. So the panic attack scene was just ??? Anyway I want something or someone else to give Carmy meaning to his life. To push him to heal and get better. But tbh he should lean on his fucking family (blood relatives and the main bear staff) and not put it just on a love interest. Carmy is literally repeating history. 5 years ago he got successful to make Mikey proud. Didn’t end well. Now he’s trying to make Sydney proud by giving her a star instead of what she really wants. A successful restaurant with a team that respects / values each other, listens to one another and believes in place they are working in.

The season ending with Sydney’s panic attack and potentially Carmy finding her outside and comforting her (aka panic attack scene 2.0). IT COULDVE BEEN EVERYTHING BUT NO WE JUST GOT THE BULLSHIT “TO BE CONTINUED”.

At the end of the day I just want my sweaty blue eyed boi to be happy and healthy and cooking in a non destructive way. We didn’t get that at all. I don’t even know if I’ll rewatch this season. Maybe just episode one. Episode one was a breath of fresh air and fucking bait and switch because the rest of the season is ass.

short answer: the 4.1 archon quest did leave a bad taste in my mouth, yes, but i got over it and realized wow. i love wrioney so much and i would rather have this than any other cookie cutter "perfect/wholesome" dynamic

long answer/explanation under cut!

first off, pre-4.1 wrioney's setup was just too good for me to pass up and hit all my fav points. cat (chat noir) + dog (cerberus) dynamic??? criminal x prison warden???? wriothesley's tareme eyes to lyney's upturned ones? cute! not to mention i liked how their color palette matched more than the other popular ships. they seemed like they were made for eachother. we also had 0 crumbs for wrio's personality at that point so i assumed he'd be the serious to lyn's playful flirt.

shipping in this game to me has always been a bit on the shallower side, and thats fine! some of these characters never get to "grow" with dynamic character arcs really and remain "static" to have their profiles make sense when you pull for them. they can never be directly antagonistic to the player and have to be "redeemed" in some way. 76++ characters and not all of them get time in the spotlight, either. thats fine too.

that all changed when fontaine came out. and even more when 4.1 did.

wriothesley's personality was a joy. i love morally dubious and fun characters like him, the kinds that dont really fit into a "box" or trope!! genshin's good at making characters like that, just as they are good at the tropey ones. i also didnt mind that he canonically isnt above torturing, too. heck, i mean i love kamisato ayato who is basically what the game sets up as the male version of arlecchino + diluc burning an abyss mage and kazuha's tongue branding comment were one of my favorite moments. i thought wrio being cruel was very much in line for a prison warden. it made sense. what didn't make sense was the way the game needed to show this.

i loved lyney the moment i saw him in the travail trailer. his thing with his family another one of the best things to come out of genshin. fucked up orphans and found family who are villains? actually so good. but because they are what the game wants us to see as "unequivocable villains", they also get... disrespected in the story a lot?

the way i saw it, the game wanted us to see wrio as the "cool/badass hero!!!! wow your grace you're actually so kind for not killing them!!! see guys he just looks cruel and antagonistic but he's actually so morally good!!!also here's like 3 cutscenes of wrio looking cool ^_^" while lyney's treated like an "overemotional kid" really rubbed me off the wrong way. everything else was fine. i just got tired of the game insisting that the fatui are so bad no matter what and the rest are ""good"" when their whole thing in fontaine was doing away with the black and white morality. the devs seek to promote greyness but they cant even write that right?

what wrio did to them truly probably wasnt even the worst lyney and his siblings have been through, i know this for a fact. honestly wrio could have killed freminet and it'd have been like. reasonable for him. but he's a big softie who has a thing for lyney i think which is why he thought a lot about them not coming to physical harm.

but after once again accepting that midhoyo just wastes a lot of potential and reconciling the dynamic of past wrioney i had in mind (also uh. writing a fic of them for closure when i've never done anything of the sort before)... i realized theyre the best thing ever actually

enemies to lovers isnt always my cup of tea, but for context i shipped shuake before this so i feel like that primed me for this genshin ship in a way LMAO.. i actually must thank wrio for showing this new side of lyney, the viciously overprotective of his family side that i thought would never be shown, only alluded to. its mesmerizing.

and the thought that lyney, mr. masks and fake-smiles-that-dont-reach-his-eyes wouldnt bother to keep up pretenses with wriothesley anymore since he coaxed that darker side of him effortlessly? really nice.

even traveler who lyney notoriously charms and flirts with gets the mask immediately after the confrontation at the duke's office, the second lyney recharges with his siblings by his side. the beautiful thing about lyney's character is that he is always fake.

but with the duke? i wouldn't be so sure. maybe his real side, claws and bared teeth, comes to light with him and him only.

and that... goes back to the "character going through dynamic arcs" thing i mentioned in the beginning that genshin lacked. now i may be reaching for crumbs here, but i'm pretty sure this ship is the closest thing we'd get for lyney ever going through a character arc. wrio too. when i say they were "made for eachother" i think i realized that it's because they both have parallel backstories. i wont spoil too much for wrio's stories and voicelines, but it's safe to say wrio also has trouble with trusting others easily. something him and lyney can relate on lol. not to mention the orphan thing... ok i wont say more.

i love that their personalities clash so catastrophically. i love that i can never predict what genshin will do next with them. this all makes shipping them so fun. i have literally never had as much fun with shipping for this game since.... ever! really. as the game evolves, the character writing and by extension their interactions with eachother do too. and i'd say it's an improvement. i'm hopeful for the future :]
