one of the things about being an educator is that you hear what parents want their kids to be able to do a lot. they want their kid to be an astronaut or a ballerina or a politician. they want them to get off that damn phone. be better about socializing. stop spending so much time indoors. learn to control their own temper. to just "fucking listen", which means to be obedient.

one of the things i learned in my pedagogy classes is that it's almost always easier to roleplay how you want someone to act. it's almost always easier to explain why a rule exists, rather than simply setting the rule and demanding adherence.

i want my kids to be kind. i want them to ask me what book they should read next, and i want to read that book with them so we can discuss it. i want my kid to be able to tell me hey that hurt my feelings without worrying i'll punish them. i want my kid to be proud of small things and come running up to me to tell me about them. i want them to say "nah, i get why this rule exists, but i get to hate it" and know that i don't need them to be grateful-for-the-roof-overhead while washing the dishes. i want them to teach me things. i want them to say - this isn't safe. i'm calling my mom and getting out of this. i want them to hear me apologize when i do fuck up; and i want them to want to come home.

the other day a parent was telling me she didn't understand why her kid "just got so angry." this woman had flown off the handle at me.

my dad - traditional catholic that he is - resents my sentiment of "gentle parenting". he says they'll grow up spoiled, horrible, pretentious. granola, he spits.

i am going to be kind to them. i am going to set the example, i think. and whatever they choose become in the meantime - i'm going to love them for it.

It's a rough world out there for people who were teenagers during the exact slice of gaming history where indie video games had become feasible to develop and distribute globally, but the definition of "indie" didn't yet encompass corporate studios and million-dollar budgets. They'll tell you their favourite game when they were a kid was, like, a point-and-click visual novel whose protagonist dreams they're a vast formless sea monster that learns about the concept of colours after finding a discarded helium balloon, or a hypertext fiction/precision platformer hybrid exploring gender as a mechanism of social control, and you think they're either being pretentious or deliberately fucking with you, but no, that's just what the indie gaming scene was like for a couple of years there. The sea monster thing got a front-page feature on the same site that made Bloons Tower Defense a household name – it was literally played by millions of people.

caleb, who acts like a puppy that got caught doing something bad whenever you're mad at him.

he gives you the side glance that dogs do and can't look you in the eyes when you're angry & lecturing him. if you give him the silent treatment, he grabs your hand and puts it over his cheek and goes, "baby.. i'm sorry, please talk to me?" with his stupidly cute purple puppy eyes. 

you would have to forgive him because not forgiving him would make you feel like you abandoned a puppy in the rain, and honestly? you might as well have. he'll show up to your apartment, soaked (mind you, it wasn't even raining today. what the hell did he do), and he will hold your hands and tell you that he'll be good and beg you to talk to him again. 

don't be too surprised if he brings out another caleb forgiveness coupon he had stashed from your childhood..

the c in caleb stands for cmaster manipulator! you can practically see dog ears laying flat on his head when you find out he's been monitoring your location secretly for the past 4 months. yet somehow, you still allow him to monitor it for the foreseeable future..?

I stumbled across @arythusa’s The Glass Scientists webcomic early this year and fell in love, so I animated a little scene for fun 🧪

I built a Front and 3/4 Front Jekyll and Hyde rig (fun fact, they’re one rig!) and animated them in Toon Boom Harmony, HalluciLanyon spawning and getting harpooned is a tweaked version of that rig, and him getting bodied was drawn in Procreate.  The layout was also made in Harmony. The audio is from the movie Drop Dead Fred.

I used the comic itself as the ‘model sheet’ to build the rig off of- used various panels for their heights and body parts in place of character, hand, mouth, etc sheets, so many pieces are pulled right from the pages. I also got to experiment with compositing, which was fun!

The art and story of this comic hooked me and I’m so excited to see where it goes! ❣️
