at first, he'll tell himself something along the lines of "oh, i just care about her life and job! the gossip is necessary to know what goes on in her life!"

sure, it started off like that. but now, even if he denies it, he's actually into hearing what laura's boyfriend sent to kylie. if you asked him if he was genuinely invested though, he'd give you an excuse about how "it's a nice way to decompress after a long day at the fleet, pips" or "what, should i not care about things my girlfriend is invested in?" — but really? he's just nosey now.

you're both laying on the couch, your legs sprawled upon caleb's as he traces abstract shapes on your calves. when you drop a bombshell, he fully grabs your ankles and sits up properly with wide eyes.

"they broke up!?"

you nod furiously, and something in the back of your mind tells you that caleb is way more invested in this than he told you before, but you bite your tongue. the gossip comes first.

"can you believe it? kayla received a message from jules, and he was basically confessing to her — even though he literally proposed to laura the weekend before!!"

caleb slaps a hand over his mouth, mumbling something along the lines of "damn cheaters" before he inquired more about what happened after.

really, there's no gossiper quite like caleb xia. he'll deny it, over and over again, but it's not like the fleet has much going on drama wise. therefore, he'll live vicariously through you — because he cares about you, yes, but also because who doesn't like to hear about drama?

he's only human after all.

you'd planned to have your summer pan out the way it always had. well deserved bed-rotting after months of frying your brain at university, bottomless ice pops and cold drinks, and maybe finally putting a dent into the massive pile of shows you'd promised tara and yvonne you'd watch. (there's only so many times you could handle tara's sad puppy eyes and yvonne's silent head shake of disappointment.) so it wasn't like you didn't have plans.

naturally, as he always does, sylus had other ones in mind for you. come spend time with me at the beach, he'd said. i haven't seen your face in months, he'd said. which technically wasn't true—you visited him when you could and you facetimed at least once a week. it's not like you were avoiding him, though. you did miss him. and what kind of person says no to a paid-for vacation sponsored by your nepo baby, elusive socialite, heir-to-a-fortune-and-then-some, sly mouthed but tender hearted best friend?

you just had one problem, though. you can't stand one of his friends. or 'friend'. you're not even sure why sylus keeps him around or how they even met. just that they went to university together and they share 'similar interests'. whatever that meant. and when you learn he's also coming on the trip for as a way to 'take his mind off recent troubles', you almost threaten to pull out of the trip entirely.

sylus sends him over to your house with bribery in the form of your favorite snacks. somehow, and in some ridiculous way, caleb leaves with a fake girlfriend and a stupid contract flimsy enough to make a ceo laugh in your face.

all you'd wanted was a peaceful vacation by the beach.

(you attribute sylus' sap and growing affinity for playing cupid to his partners. you're only hating outside of the club because you can't get in. that much you can admit. you're happy for him, though.)

and now here you are — in a gorgeous wedding dress while caleb's in a suit that matches. a teasing but heartfelt tone to his voice before he kneels before you and grabs a hold of your hand.
