31 DOD: Day 4 - Favorite Costume/Suit

Ha. Might as well ask me my favorite child 🤣

I love the Robin suit. But I am also a staunch Discowing apologist... Even the Mulletwing could be good, especially if we take away any ties to Mirage (I do really like the glider wing aspect of it). The fingerstripe version is amazing. And you know what, I'll even admit to liking the Renegade costume (or would if it was the more classic black and blue). New 52 Nightwing had a few details going for it, too, especially those little red strips on his hips that Brett Booth added later on. Rebirth Nightwing added the bird head and the little stripes on the calves. Fear State had the chin strap. This man has been blessed with multiple good costume variations. Even the Batman costume had some lovely distinctions (that bat shaped belt buckle was lovely). Even the Spyral version was a good tactical uniform. Ican't pick between them; I'd love to see some of the newer updates mashed onto the old fingerstripes one, just to see if it would be too busy... And to keep from giving the same main answers as everyone else, today, I'll just go with the improvised "new" Discowing from Sam Humphries' and Phil Jimenez's Nightwing 39 😁

If you had free reins over a new batman cartoon adaptation, how would you go about it?

oh god. oh god. anon yuo are about to enter an unskippable cutscene. i love you.

SMILEEESSSS okay so :-) it would be like. multiple seasons. okay? like we're going LONG HAUL on this bitch. it would follow my personal canon of events (mostly post-crisis pre-flashpoint w some modifications and inclusion of a tiny bit of rebirth stuff) and i can't explain how i'd like the art to look but i can picture it.

i'd want it to be very... balanced. like i'd want parts to be dark, but there could still be opportunity for fun. i'd want a lot of focus on motive, on why, on emotions. and maybe not even explicitly you know!! like just. character study stuff.

i want it to show off complicated relationships, where people hurt each other and no one is right or wrong and there's anger where there is love too. and that's not just like the "bat family" in here. i want to explore bruce and harvey/two face. i want to explore bruce and harley and healing from trauma. i want the joker to only be relevant for a few seasons before they start paying attention to other villains.

i think the series begins with bruce in his early days as batman. he's already become batman and has been going at it for a while (we don't need another origin story. there's too fucking many.)

and while i do want to focus a lot on the robins, i don't want it in a WFA-style thing.

i don't know how to explain it but they wouldn't be living all together under one big roof. things happen. people fight. people are outsiders. they try to kill eachother. you know? not everyone is happy together.

other misc. things i wanna include:

barbara stays in her wheelchair 4 ever and is dykey with babs

jason is never fully reintegrated in the family. and if he has to be, it's after a LOT of time and work, and would only come at the end of the series, so there's no awkward jump from villain to Beloved Family Member like there sometimes is in some comics.

running gag of tim drake being lame as fuck. also robin branded skateboard that he falls off of

spoiler rolerskates. enough said. also steph has curly hair

duke has better hair than the fucking. bullshit they give him in 90% of the comics.

damian and talia being visibly brown. NO GREEN EYES!!!!!!!! and they get to interact with their culture in a normal way and people are consulted on this.

bruce is jewish. he has a bat-themed menorah. this is never explicitly mentioned but it is present in the background.

cass' disability is portrayed well. she doesn't speak normally or use sign language but her own way of communicating.

clark is there sometimes!!! they have a thing going on but it never becomes official, not because i don't want them to, but because bruce is shit at communication.

bette cameos. idk how she'd fit in with the timeline i just want her there.

duke and jason being assholes to eachother but like in a way where you're like oh ueah these guys are brothers.

dick and damian being best brothers/father and son ever

DISCOWING CANON!!!! OR ELSE!!!!!!!!! and mulletwing too.

steph takes over as nightwing at least once.

talia written better than 99% of comics have ever written her.

Some people say Jason's fall to Red Hood wouldn't have happened if Dick were part of his childhood support system, and therefore Dick and Jason must've not been close before Jason's death.

Standard disclaimer: It is perfectly fine to love Wayne Family Adventures, just like it's fine to enjoy Tiny Titans and Lil Gotham. It's even fine to prefer WFA to the main comics!

But I kinda disagree with some fans labeling WFA's representation of Jason's trauma as "correct" or "accurate" or "proper" or "realistic" or "faithful".

There is no one single "correct" way to represent trauma/PTSD.

Many don't have panic attacks. Many don't have logical or obvious triggers. Some respond in ways that are messy, difficult, isolating, angry, destructive, ugly, frustrating, exhausting, hurtful, cruel—bad.

The Red Hood from the original comics? The Red Hood in the animated movie and in the Arkham games and in Injustice 2? He responds to his trauma by trying to forcibly take control over his life, his home, and his parent.

His trauma is not nicely packaged. His trauma didn't make him a sweeter, more lovable person. His trauma prompted him to become ruthless and obsessed with taking control.

With comics, they run so long and are written by so many people, I tend to find myself thinking of long running characters as more than one person, or maybe the same person in different timelines.

Take Dick Grayson, I think of his time as Robin with Batman and his time as Robin in the Teen Titans as two different things, in my mind Gotham city Dick Grayson Robin has a flirt "will they, won't they?" relationship with Batgirl, while Teen Titan (and early New Teen Titans) Robin is dating Kid Flash. In reality both things were happening at the same time, but they feel different to me

Likewise New Teen Titans Nightwing (The Discowing through to the early 90s Mulletwing) is clearly in love with Starfire, they're getting married and living happily ever after

but Fingerstripes Nightwing of the 1990s through to today? oh that guy is a different person and he's getting married to Babs of course who else? don't be silly.

and of course Batman Dick is a whole other person who's too busy figuring out Batman and keeping Damian from murdering people to think about romance or a personal life thanks

While I fully understand each of these Dick Graysons are the same person, they feel very different to me, and like each of them could do or say things that would feel totally in character, but would feel totally out of character if a different version did it.

So I guess I'm saying this is how I kinda multi-ship, and don't worry about out of character and kinda keep a few different versions of the story going in my head at once, that seems sane and normal to me?

Batkid Drabbles - "Cassette"

“This one says...Meerkat Map?” Steph squinted at the cassette tape, angling her head back and forth like that would help the smudged writing make sense.

“That cannot possibly be right.”

“You tell me, Mr. Scribbles.” She threw the tape at Tim, maybe a little harder and more head-directed than strictly necessary. He frowned at it for a solid thirty seconds before venturing, “...Woklaus MX?”

“Wow, can’t even read your own handwriting.”

“This is definitely not mine. Is this even a case tape?”

“It was in the box,” Steph said, shrugging.

“Because nobody ever misfiles things around here,” Tim muttered under his breath. Steph graciously ignored him.

“Hey, Dick, can you read this?” she called, gesturing at the tape. He came and leaned over Tim, who obligingly lifted the cassette. Unlike Tim and Steph, Dick barely glanced at it before his face lit with recognition and he pulled it out of Tim’s hand.

“Oh, hey! This is mine!”

“So what the hell does it say?”

“Workout Mix,” Dick said like it was obvious, flipping it around to face Steph.

“I...guess?” Tim conceded, squinting at the theoretical letters. Steph, meanwhile, shot to her feet and lunged to grab the tape.

“Oh, I have to hear this.”

Dick laughed and let it go easily enough.

“Yeah, I used to make tapes to listen to down here during training and things. Bruce hated it, obviously.”

“You rebel,” Steph said sarcastically as she started setting up the tape deck. Dick shrugged, grin going a little sharper.

“You kids have no idea,” he said ominously, ruffling Tim’s hair and getting half-heartedly swatted at.

“As someone who lived through it, you really, really don’t,” Babs cut in via the computer.

“I’m scared to find out what’s on that tape,” Tim said. Considering Steph was busy swapping the audio outputs from headphones to speakers, they were all about to find out. Probably at full volume, knowing her.

“Why?” Dick asked, all wide-eyed innocence. “I’ve got great taste!”

“You had a mullet,” Babs pointed out flatly.

“Yeah.” Dick didn’t seem to take that as the criticism it was definitely intended as. “Is that retro again yet? Should I bring it back?” He ran a hand back through his admittedly shaggier than usual hair.

“No,” Tim said emphatically at the same time that Steph shouted, “Absolutely yes,” and hit play on the tape, blasting obnoxiously upbeat pop music.

I have a massive amount of questions and hopefully you can answer them all. I wont ask all at once but first question. Dick and Tarantula. I know kinda what happens but like... All the titans took her side? Who were the titans and how did they react?

Alright, always happy to help out. Feel free to fire away! To start...I believe you’re thinking about Mirage, not Tarantula. 

Everything with Tarantula occurred in Bludhaven when Dick wasn’t currently working with the Titans. Dick hasn’t ever talked about what happened with Tarantula to anyone, so it’s likely that the Titans have no idea that anything ever happened...the only people who would have an inkling of what went down would probably be Bruce (who after the fact yelled at Dick to stop being suicidal and never looked into the matter further) and Barbara (who broke up with Dick...after seeing Tarantula force herself on him and knee him in the groin...okay). Yeah that’s a whole other issue :/ 

But I’ll explain the situation with Mirage instead. To set the scene: Dick was on the “New Titans” team, which included: Starfire, Beastboy/Changeling, Red Star, Donna Troy, and Pantha. Mirage came from an evil alternate future timeline, and in that timeline she was romantically involved with a version of Dick Grayson, later known as “Deathwing.” Because of this, she is obsessed with Dick and is convinced that they belong together. She’s come back with the rest of the “Team Titans” to the past to kill Donna Troy in order to stop her son from ruling over the world as a dictator. For some reason, she accomplishes this plan...by kidnapping Starfire, replacing her, and tricking Dick into having sex. Yeah, the plot is convoluted as hell. No time to unpack all that! 

Deathstroke (1991) #14

The team discovers that there is an imposter when Kory manages to break free of her imprisonment and escape. Dick realizes that he was manipulated into having sex with a stranger. Instead of Kory and Dick being able to talk about it alone, Pantha spills the beans in front of the whole team (sans Donna) and fuels the fire with several horrible, crude comments. 

The New Titans (1988) #90

“Details! From ten to one--how did she score compared to this one?”

Though Mirage had them all fooled, Pantha says that, seeing as Dick slept with her, he definitely should have been able to realize that she was phony. No one on the team comes to Dick’s defense or tries to shift the blame from Dick’s shoulders. Kory’s a bit pissed as well. She’s had a pretty bad couple of days. She wants an explanation from Dick, but Pantha can’t freaking shut up for five seconds so that he can give her one. 

Also, note the comments about how Dick’s hair has changed? And about “Starfire’s” new costume? I’m going to quickly side track to explain just how terrible Mirage is. 

The New Titans #88

So, while she was disguised as Kory, Mirage pushed Dick into changing his costume and cutting his hair into a mullet. Dick didn’t want to, especially because his discowing costume had huge sentimental value seeing as he’d modeled the look after his dead parent’s circus outfits, but “Kory” kept pestering him. He trusted his girlfriend, so Dick eventually agreed to follow what he thought was her lead. 

I can’t get over how horrible that is...that Dick’s rapist tried to own Dick’s body to the extent that manipulating him into having sex wasn’t enough, that she abused his trust to change his appearance to suit her needs too, specifically altering him in ways he wasn’t comfortable with. It’s disgusting, I don’t know why it’s so often glossed over, and it really gives a whole new reason to hate “Mulletwing.” And Nightwing’s not the only one whose bodily autonomy is completely thrown out the window.

The New Titans #93

When Mirage was disguised as Kory, she went around and did a bunch of porno, nude photoshoots. I don’t think I have to explain how awful it is that Kory’s appearance was used like this without her consent, especially in such a public way (people were literally stopping her in the streets to talk about it and she was invited onto a news show). Kory is rightfully pissed. Mirage also changes Starfire’s costume as well, to have big cut-outs on the sides. 

Mirage is absolutely horrible. Cannot say that enough.  

Back on the plot: Dick and Kory still have a lot to talk out, but they are on a mission to save Donna, so both of them put their feelings aside for now to help their friend. Later, while Starfire is busy chasing Donna in space, Nightwing runs into Mirage, and she reveals that she was the imposter. 

Team Titans #2

DICK YOU SLUT! So tell me, who was better? Huh? Huh? Huh? 

Mirage laughs about raping Nightwing with zero remorse. Pantha calls Dick a slut and once again asks who is better. Also like last time, the rest of the team (sans Donna) is standing right there...and doesn’t care or help him out at all. 

Dick is forced to put his feelings aside once again to deal with the threat to Earth. This means working with Mirage to the point where she is just...part of the team for some reason? My reaction is pretty in line with Kory’s here: 

Despite Kory’s protest, Dick focuses on the mission, and says that they need the manpower and the knowledge of the future that the Team Titans (including Mirage) have in order to defeat Donna and her son (long story, just ignore the plot honestly). But really, they need Mirage...so that she can cause unnecessary, contrived drama between Dick and Kory. 

I’m just going to say it: Kory and Dick are both pretty wildly out of character. Putting aside how stupid and cliché this plot is in the first place, Dick lets Mirage get away with way too much crap, when he’s always been very up front about dealing with bullshit in the past. One of the absolute worst things about having Mirage stick around (and at one point literally go on vacation with the Titans) is how she just keeps acting like her and Dick are together. It’s gross and Dick needed and usually would have put his freaking foot down about it. They also have Kory flipping from acknowledging that Mirage tricked Dick and is at fault for what happened:

To having her think that Dick genuinely...loved Mirage and would rather be with her? And blaming Dick for being tricked? Even though Dick and Kory are both victims here?

Starfire has an incredibly high EQ. She and Dick have always been very communicative. To see her completely unwilling to hear him out (and blame him for being raped) is shocking. She acts like an immature teenager, changing her mind all the time and then storming off to go party with random guys in clubs for the next couple days. She has zero of her previously demonstrated emotional maturity and trust. Meanwhile, just as Dick loses his girlfriend, he also loses his apartment, and, to top it all off, Roy swings by to tell Dick that the government is going to shut down the Titans because of all the property damage that happened in their last fight. Nightwing literally can never catch a break. 

The New Titans (1988) #99

Eventually, the two do make up...and Dick immediately proposes to Kory out of nowhere. She accepts, despite being pissed moments before. They have a wedding the next issue, but it is interrupted by villains from the alternate timeline, including an evil Raven and Deathwing. Afterwards, Dick and Kory’s relationship is never quite the same. 

Seeing Dick and Starfire’s relationship sour, when it was built up over so many years of comics (and with neither of them truly being at fault for the split), is freaking depressing. And Mirage never does get punished really...I’m pretty sure she’s even part of the honor guard that escorts Superman’s body to his tomb when he dies, which is dumb as hell. But that’s how it all went down. 

Just to clarify, since you specifically asked how the team reacted, I kept saying “(sans Donna)” because while most of this was going on Donna was a) giving birth or b) going crazy with power. Later, Donna is shown to know about what happened with Mirage, but she doesn’t really give it much thought. She does comment that Dick is acting strangely and she’s concerned about him, but she also doesn’t seem to connect the obvious dots that Dick is acting off...because he’s still shaken about being raped and tricked. Roy also appears later on to lead the Titans. Mirage is a member of that group, and Roy isn’t really shown to have any strong feelings about it. 

Honestly, I wouldn’t say that the Titans “took Mirage’s side” as you describe. Pretty sure none of them liked Mirage. But, they didn’t stand up for Dick, certainly. There was a lot of victim blaming. Dick’s rape wasn’t given the narrative weight that it deserved, probably due to the time period the comic was made. His teammates mostly didn’t care enough to take sides, used him being raped as a joke, or blamed him for being tricked. 

The whole story arc is convoluted, the characterizations are terrible, and overall it just sucks that this was written.

Curious to ask, what are your Top favorite suits Dick wore in crime fighting, from his the classic Pixie Boots to the modern day blue with black and everything in between?

Depending on the day, #1 is either Fingerstripes or Discowing, probably not surprise to anyone who's talked to me or followed me for any length of time (I'm wearing a Discowing shirt right now 🤣). # 2 is whichever wasn't #1, lol. # 3 is probably Rebirth Nightwing. Pixie boots and scaly green panties would be #4 (yes, I know it's a leotard, lol) and I hate that I'm ranking it that low. I was a teenager before Discowing debuted, anyway, and I watched way too many cartoons with Dick in red green and yellow, so just for nostalgia factor and sheer iconic was, that's high up there. Let's go with just prior to Flashpoint DickBats #5. I love the little details how he made the Batsuit his own, from the belt buckle to being able to shoot the horns on the cowl. #6 Dick as a Talon. I have a love hate relationship with TalonDick. I don't always like the execution of it in writing, but dang, I love the look of it. There's a fan art of it that came out a long time ago that just... I almost drool at how beautiful it is. (I also have a quick sketch with Dick as a Talon in my book of convention commissions) #7 Grayson. unpopular opinion, but I did like just being able to see him unmasked then. I cosplayed it once, lmao. Sat right in front of Tom King, staring at him during a panel with a faceless swirly mask 🤣 Animated Series Nightwing #8. Classic black and blue, but ranked lower because no Fingerstripes. It does look good, but dude, those stripes can't be pulled off by just anyone. It's like with dance costumes (or marching band). The stripes draw attention, so any flaw of movement is magnified. It takes confidence in your ability and absolute skill (and he has both and then some). Add both of those together with his showmanship, and it's probably distracting as hell in a fight, too. Unpopular opinion, but I loved the colors of the Mulletwing outfit, I just hate how it came about (and a lot of the ways it's drawn). I think maybe it's just me being partial to blue and gold. It could be redone to look nice, with the right artist (and an entire different story to how he picks it, and without the hair). So it gets #9 and beats out New 52 red and black (#10) just for the color scheme 🤣. That leaves #11 as Renegade and #12 as the New 52 and Rebirth versions of Robin where he has pants. I just don't like those.

I didn't add in the animated movies or Earth-2 or Earth Two Batman or Robin or animated Young Justice (I do love YJ Robin and Nightwing) or the animated movies or Titans tv. I'd potentially be here all day then, lol. Also, I'm definitely queer enough to admit I didn't hate the Batman & Robin movie suit 😂 If there are any more versions or AUs you're curious about me ranking, ask away 😋 or send choices and have me pick a winner. I enjoy the hell out of the hurt comfort in the story, but I can't with that art style. I just can't.
