What did/do you like about Pharah?

Uh, gameplay-wise, I really love characters in shooters who rely on three-dimensional movement techs. Chaining together hover and jump to stay in the air for as long as possible and keep momentum is so satisfying, and picking enemies off from the sky made me feel like a bird of prey. I was a good Pharah main.

Story-wise, there unfortunately isn't much to canonically go off because Pharah is so underutilized and neglected. Her personality's pretty boilerplate "heroic hero" (she's literally inspired by Captain America).

But it's the crumbs/bits and pieces that I really latched onto. Pharah's a confirmed lesbian; her short story with Baptiste implies she harbors a crush on Mercy (fucking thank you.). She's biracial Egyptian/First Nations. She has major mommy issues, having grown up both admiring and resenting Ana. She's the bridge between Old Overwatch, inspired by the idealized heroes who surrounded her childhood, and New Overwatch. She's one of the only inter-generational characters in the cast; someone whose experiences span the gap, which is why I seriously believe Pharah would make a great main character.

There isn't much to go off of, though; she's a very uncomplicated character (she's a soldier for a private military corporation, lol.). But that just means she's a blank slate character, so I've seen fanfic writers run wild and create some really interesting takes on her. My favorite interpretation of her's a dense, herbo gym-bro type (a lot of her liens are about work outs, exercising, and playing sports) who's easily excitable under her seemingly self-serious, armored visage. We see how she tends to gloat and hype herself up when she's on a streak too, so Pharah definitely has a competitive and boastful side under her more professional and militant performance.

Now Mercy? Mercy is a real complex character.

Drawing random adults from The Blue Eye Samurai because I’m bored and I love giving love to random characters with 5 seconds of screen time. Major spoilers in here!!!!

Characters:

- Chiaki: He explained that his father was a bookbinder so I imagine that he helped him in some way. If it’s true that he lied to get the broken sword, I like to think that something he said there contained a bit of true.

- Abijah: Even he was the main villain, I could feel that he felt a lot of regret towards what he did to his sister for the way he explains it. Idk, I love when they do this instead of having a bland character that is bad just because he is bad. Like, they actually give you a reason why he became such an absurdly bizarre person.

- Heiji and his brother: They where interesting to draw because I like to think they have kinda of a sibling rivalry and Heiji just wanting to be better than his brother.

- Madame Kaji: I like to think that she had a rough childhood and that she tried her best to succeed. The way she cared so much of Kinuyo made me think she really didn’t want any of her environment to be harmed, at least to try.

For now those are my fav and I don’t know, I really liked the way that even the smallest characters have a bit of background.

WC/RW DAY 6: RIVULET

nobody quite knows where she came from, but standing theories among clanmates include being a former kittypet, or a cat from a far-off clan despite the mystery, bubblebounce is quite popular among their clan for their bubbly [ha] demeanor! she even has two mates-- one of the healers, flowerheart, and a certain cat with a thirst for violence....

the flowers in her cheek fur are pink rain lilies! you get a cookie from bubblebounce if you can connect the meaning of those flowers to their lore /silly

So I went to the wiki page for the henghill Bullet & Brain mission of 2.2 looking for some dialogue I had missed and

a) I found something incredibly tasty that slotted into some other thoughts I'd been having, more on that on another day, and

b) I saw this super fun little trivia at the bottom, which!

I knew Penacony characters like Boothill took a lot of inspirations from old movies, but I didn't realize it was even in his and Dan Heng's relationship, that's so cool!!

It fits them very well, it's such a fun reference. "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" was an old buddy Western film (from 1969- nice) about a pair of outlaws. Butch Cassidy was the leader of a gang, and described as clever, affable, and talkative. Meanwhile, his closest companion, the Sundance Kid, was known as a man of few words.

Cassidy's original birth name was much more plain, but similar to Boothill, he took on a new moniker when he became an outlaw. "Cassidy" had been the last name of his beloved mentor, who taught him how to shoot and ride. And Sundance Kid was known as he was because Sundance was the name of his hometown, and it was the only place that had ever managed to catch and jail him, back when he'd been younger (also similar to Dan Heng, but ouch).

These two stick together like glue throughout the length of the film- through Cassidy's leadership of the gang being challenged, through a train robbery gone wrong, through being pursued by mercenaries, and even through fleeing to Bolivia and trying to start over together.

I don't want to say too much more, since the mission title is referencing one specific movie that I've never seen. I kinda wanna watch it now, though, just to see the inspiration that went into Boothill and Dan Heng and how they get along. I just think it's really sweet that these two were literally made to be the best of bros, how lovely is that. 💕

Paraphrased from a comment I made on the THG subreddit, but Mags had every right to become a villain and it's a wonder that she didn't, honestly.

It feels weird even using "Mags" and "villain" in the same sentence, as she's genuinely one of the kindest characters in the series, if not of all time. But it's a bit wild how kind she is, considering the fact that she:

1.) went through the 11th Games 2.) Mentored for decades and watched kids die every year. And she was from a Career District, yes, but it's HEAVILY implied that Mags was not a Career because that system didn't exist yet, so she also had to deal with the whole Career culture of kids volunteering and training and being brainwashed to go into their deaths. 3.) She just...sat back helpless as the Games and the government become worse and worse. Maybe "sat back helpless" isn't the best phrasing as she was a rebel, but, unfortunately, it's not like she was able to systemically do much. 4.) Watched as her mentee, her close friend, her grandson in all but blood got trafficked. 5.) Lived through TWO QUARTER QUELLS and DIED IN ANOTHER QUELL. And she didn't just "die", she volunteered knowing there was no chance of her survival. She didn't give a fuck about being a Victor/survivor again. She only wanted to protect Annie, and then later martyr herself for the cause/for Finnick/for Katniss.

Despite all the shit she’s been through — we never once see Mags do anything even slightly cruel.

I would not have been NEAR as selfless and loving as she was if I went through ANY of those things, let alone ALL of it!
