You and Suna weren't together. Not anymore, at least.

There wasn't any fault on either side, nothing dramatic to split you apart. Just two people who weren't suited for a romantic relationship, as you came to bitterly realize. Maybe you could have made it work with some hard work and effort, but it was far easier to call it quits than risk spilling salt in the wound and ending up hating each other for the rest of your lives.

So you left it there, ending the symphony on a high note. You didn't stop to wonder what might have been, or dwell on the sound of music still ringing in your ears. It was over, there were no more heartbeats, no melodies. Only silence sung through your empty apartment.

You kept the breakup casual, agreeing to stay friends afterwards. Once those words fell from your lips, that was when it was set in stone. The line was drawn in the sand, strictly parting your relationship into the platonic category. Boundaries were made, silent promises to keep some distance between you.

But things were never that simple. After having you be his for so long, Suna didn't know how to let go of you just like that. Even the idea of being single felt foreign in his mind, the thought of you pushing away any chance of him falling for someone else. You were in a similar situation, still craving the addictive kind of love that only he could give you, yet reluctant to go back to how things were.

In the end, staying 'friends' was just a way to carefully avoid acknowledging the feelings still lingering in you both. He never stopped loving you, and you never stopped staring at your old pictures, both longing for the other like a missing limb. And just like clockwork, a phantom pain would strike and you would seek each other out again. The events played out the same way, over and over, like you were following a script.

It would go like this: every few nights, at least once a week, your name would flash across his screen. Suna would stare at it for a moment, relishing the sound of the distinct ringtone he set, so he always knew when it was you calling. It was the same contact as when you were together, the only change being the absence of the heart emoji beside your name.

It felt like your misery was aligned, your loneliness in sync, because every night that he was missing you the most, you would always end up calling.

Suna would answer the phone, seconds before it rung out, and pretend he wasn't waiting for the call. He'd entertain your small talk and excuses, whatever feeble reason you'd come up with to justify ringing him late at night, as long as he got the chance to hear your voice again.

Sometimes it was just that: a phone call. Sometimes, it was only a message. Sometimes, when the loneliness was hitting you both harder than you could bear, he would find some way to suggest meeting up.

It was always something simple, something harmless. A late-night run to the convenience store for snacks, or a walk around that park you loved, or just driving around until you were tired enough to fall asleep. And you would always find some excuse, or some reason to say no, but in the end you would always cave.

Suna would be out of his house in minutes, sliding the key into his ignition. He would meet you outside of your apartment, wordlessly opening the door for you to enter the passenger seat. And the seat would already be adjusted to how you like, because there's no one else he lets into his car, but you’d fiddle with the lever at the side anyway. Anything to pretend that at least one of you has moved on enough to be seeing someone new.

As he drives, his hand would stray from the gear shift, crossing to your side of the car, but never quite reaching your thigh. And you would pretend not to notice the halted movement, and pretend not to feel disappointed when he brought both hands to the wheel.

Maybe he'd make a remark about how it was just like old times, and maybe you would laugh and brush it off, but the story always ends the same no matter how he played the game. He was on a losing streak, gambling away his pride every time you called, but his self-control always seemed to loosen once the sun went down.

It was a little pathetic, when he focused on it for too long. It was no wonder his friends kept calling him a loser, when he came crawling back to you, his ex, the second you rang. At the very least, you were as pathetic as he was if you were the one dialing his number, but maybe that was just because you knew he'd pick up. You got everything you needed, a shoulder to cry on, a person to keep you company, all without the hassle of officially having a boyfriend again.

On his weaker nights, he would get sick of waiting around, and be the one to send the first message. You would answer quickly, although not as quickly as he did. The response would always be the same, and it would always go the same way.

Sometimes, during your meet-ups, you would be the one to cut them short, quietly asking Suna to drive you home. He would try not to look disappointed, and you would try not to slam the door as you left.

On your weaker nights, you wouldn't bother with trying to make up an excuse when he invites you to crash at his place instead. He would say to you “My house is closer”, or “We can watch a movie”, or “You always sleep better around someone else, don't you?” and you would defeatedly agree.

He would take you home—his home, not yours, though it used to be both—and you would leave your shoes by the door. You'd set up the blankets on the couch, and he’d bring you a glass of water, and you'd turn the channel to some trashy reality TV show that neither of you paid any attention to.

If you were feeling particularly down, and he was feeling particularly bold, he'd slide his arm around your shoulders to pull you close. It kills him, not knowing if the way you lean into him means anything, or if you're just craving the contact. He doesn't ask, not daring to disturb the unstable peace that you've built between yourselves, lest the whole unspoken arrangement come crashing down.

In the morning, when you wake up with his arms around your waist and one of your hands gripping a fistful of his shirt, you will peel yourself away quietly, and tiptoe away to find your shoes. He will find you right as you're about to leave, sluggishly running a hand through his hair as he mumbles something about staying for breakfast.

Then, after a brief back-and-forth, you will agree that the night was a mistake, that you're better as something closer to friends, and Suna will restrain himself from kissing you goodbye. You both will retreat to your own beds in your own homes, and imagine there is someone laying beside you to warm up the cold sheets.

Suna will shrug his shoulders when the possibility of a blind date is suggested to him by a friend, as though he has any interest in a partner who isn’t you. And you will nod along to your friends when they tell you to delete his number, even though you know in your gut that you never will have the courage to.

You'll ignore his messages for a while, and he'll pretend that means you've started to move on. You will both go about your lives as you always do, day after day, each acting as though you're doing fine on your own, and lying to your friends when they ask if you've cut contact yet.

But neither of you will be surprised when a week later, early in the morning when you should be sleeping, your name lights up on Suna's screen.

I’ve been thinking about them so here’s a Scott Tracy [TAG edition] headcanon dump:

1. This is a bit of a retcon of an older headcanon, but Scott is 26 at the start of S1, just at the edge of turning 27, and 29 on the brink of turning 30 at the end of S3. I originally put him as 27, but I will die on the hill that Alan is 17 in S1 based on the uk driving age and I think I’ve seen somewhere that an old magazine or something said the age gap between Alan and Scott was 9 years?

2. Probably not going to be very popular but I headcanon that in the world of TAG, Scott was never in the military or GDF. No bereznik, no nothing. Instead his possible “militaristic” behaviour comes from Jeff’s training and Scott’s tendencies to copy his father.

3. Scott may have the colouring and significant facial features of his father, but actually has a good amount of his mother’s traits, such as his lanky build and personality. He loves his dad dearly and aspires to be like him, but also appreciates the little things his mother gave him that didn’t leave him a simple clone of his dad. He also inherited a few traits from his mother’s side in general.

4. Scott’s behaviour is often him attempting to act like Jeff for the sake of the others. It started as him trying to figure out how to lead, but there was also an underlying factor of him wanting things at home to stay as similar as they could. This is “Commander Scott”, whilst his real personality shines when he banters with his family, expresses his own interests and feels more comfortable.

5. Linking to headcanon 2 is what I like to call “The silver prince of Tracy Island”. Scott is a valuable asset, and people know this. Even before iR, organisations and militaries were scrambling to try and get hold of the firstborn of the legendary Colonel Jeff Tracy. They think that the kid who wants to be just like daddy will be easy to manipulate. But Scott always turned them down out of a desire to stay with his family and his incredibly pacifist nature. One of these organisations was the GDF, at the time run by a not so nice man. Not long before the Zero-X, they attempted to basically kidnap Scott and force him to serve, but were stopped by an irate Jeff who came in and saved him. This incident lead to the man in charge being investigated and replaced by Colonel Casey not long after Zero-X. (This is partly influenced by an old thread that I can’t find for the LIFE OF ME-)

His brothers know what happened, they know that there are people who want Scott Tracy for their own gain, and they are determined to protect him as he’s protected them. Sometimes, one might find a brother or two sitting vigil over their brother’s rare instances of sleep. His royal guard.

6. Scott’s pacifist nature comes from the fact that his earliest memories include the fresh Conflict of 2040. He became aware of the destruction through Jeff’s own experiences and hearing many, many news broadcasts and conversations. Scott may have been young, but he understood the gravity of what adults talked about following the conflict, when it was fresh in everyone’s minds. Whilst he doesn’t remember this, it was monumental in forming who he is today. He’s not a TOTAL pacifist (as seen when he attempts to punch evil Indiana Jones-), but he is determined to never take a life. He knows his father’s regrets, and promised to never repeat them.

7. Scott is stronger than he looks. Yes he’s light as a feather and could almost be called a twink, but he’s actually mostly lean muscle. iR promotes training for strength rather than show, so Scott isn’t very buff looking. He does however, lack a lot of body fat and can sometimes struggle to warm back up. His uniform is thickly woven and padded inside as a result, and on windy days at the island, Virgil will attempt to swaddle his big brother in blanket-thick towels post-swim.

8. Despite only stating “looking up at the night sky” (ouch) and “swimming” as his hobbies in that interview, Scott does have a few things he enjoys! Flying is obvious, but he also enjoys playing football (the REAL one, where you KICK the ball), hiking, model making and using burner accounts to wind up the bigots of 2060.

9. Scott has some variation of separation anxiety, even if he’ll never admit it. If a brother comes home after a close call or particularly long/dangerous mission, he’ll essentially wrap himself around them and refuse to let go. Because he’s mad at himself that he couldn’t protect them more, scared of what could have happened, and needs to assure himself that he hasn’t lost his baby brothers the way he lost his dad.

10. When there’s a particularly annoying or just frustrating board member at Tracy Industries, Scott will perform a series of secret pranks to get under their skin without any real consequences. The investors fear the coffee machine after it got filled with non-toxic washing up liquid found its way inside. He sits with Gordon to brainstorm new ideas.

11. If picked up from under the armpits or grabbed by the back of his shirt collar, Scott will go limp and one can perform the cat “temperament test” on him. Beware that this only occurs when there is a level of trust, otherwise expect resistance.

Heart often just. Remembers he doesn't . Have his eyes. They are gone, not even there !!!! And will reach up to try and feel them ??? Often leads into panic attack related scratching and itching, which just further irritates his already sensitive and healing scars- Often Mind or Soul will hear the frantic flapping and grab some kitchen mittens and shove them on his hands/claws, just to protect him from his own tendencies- Usually ends with one of them either talking him down or just . Physically holding him down until he comes back around. I think about this often like a normal person ?

Heart I think CAN fly if he so desired, but . He's so shit at taking care of his own wings………. Fun fact; Birds have this stuff called pin feathers and sheaths on those baby feathers that protect them as they come out, but !!! Those sheaths hurt a loottt of bumped!!!! Also dampen the ability to fly since. It's just a thick blob of sheath stuff with a feather in the center that's not like. Out of the casing yet :]

EITHER WAY. The few days when it's like. Shower day. Heart doesn't quite like those days because of these pin feathers, so Soul and Mind typically have to 1; restrain him; and 2; clean off the idiots feathers for him so he's no longer in PAIN from getting clean, but he sure swears like. The whole time they have to do this. Big grouch.

In his normal voice that is! I like to think he's the most. Anxious over-practicing one just to be SEEN as perfect; he wants to be the best and never be anything less. Just. Singing too much can literally harm your voice and permanently strain your vocal cords, making your voice sound VERY hoarse or even hurts to speak!!!!!!! Methinks Mind did this 1 too many times and ended up Losing his ability to speak / Sing normally, so he had to get the ol' voice bank throat filter which stabilizes his throat enough to speak and to sing, he just no longer sounds like whole [WHICH; REALLY PISSES HIM OFF HE WAS SO PROUD OF BEING THE MOST SIMILAR VOICE WISE]

Mind often takes his time staying up later writing down notes and things; Sort of like journal logs? Small things that bothered the other two, what to avoid, what to do more; Just to . Try. and get them closer to their goal of being together as one

It usually also contains like; small things they laughed at, small things he notices the two of them do when they're anxious, sad, frustrated- small body ques to remember to notice and ask about. He's not Very Good at verbally supporting people but he sure does his best to do things in small ways to make things more comfortable, like making probably very tiny snacks from time to time when Heart's in a funk, grabbing blankets whenever he finds Soul sleeping somewhere uncomfortable, Sorting stuff for the two of them, Doing laundry… Just basic housework but things the other two Definitely would Not do…

He feels the most comfortable and like he can breathe when he's out and about around other wild animals, he loves to be able to care after smaller things- Things that can't cause as many fights, and secretly thinks if he can master doing this surely he can master wrangling the other two together into this whole "Let's become Whole" Ideal! Which is why he has owned Multiple animals!!!!! Darrell is just the one that has stuck around the most, and the one he's become the most emotionally attached to- I'm sure if you watched him long enough he kisses Darrell to bed every night and tucks him in :-] WHICH I like to think he'd also be very strict with Darrell? Like an overly protective Father of his only child. It's funny to me

I've never been good at like. Thinking about what soul enjoys doing but when I do think I write like 10million things

I like to think he goes stargazing often, likes just. Being outside. More than inside the house. Which is why he comes home so late so often and isn't around for whenever the other two get into small banters, HE'S OUT WATCHING THE SKY!!!

He watches the star patterns a lot and enjoys charting all the different changes and new stars he finds every night during the different seasons, especially enjoys showing them off to Mind who enjoys cataloging new info and keeping it stored safe and sound..

I also like to think he talks to himself quite a lot, pep talks himself about stuff-

He's always trying to sound like he's got everything all figured out but Quite clearly has No idea whatsoever what would help. He usually panics and goes to his default of "Violence would totally Solve this problem!"

Random Jayvik headcanons

I firmly think Viktor moves around at night because he struggles finding a comfortable position for his leg and back, until he finds the weirdest position that makes him look like he had a fight with someone, and often those positions lead to snoring.

Jayce is very tame around sleeping and usually doesn't move much, and doesn't snore easily. But if he does snore. Oh boy. Everyone get out of the building there's an earthquake we're all gonna die.

Viktor has a tendency to talk while sleeping. When Jayce is sleeping with him at times he wakes up because he feels Viktor's breath tickle his skin and he'll hear "I told him to fix it... And then they all died... The pineapples were good, thanks..." And never talk again during the rest of the night.

Jayce has the WORST case of bed hair ever to exist in the history of the whole world

Jayce says he uses kaomojis ironically but he uses them often enough to not be able to say he doesn't like them. Here's an example:

Viktor: hey I need you to come to the lab quickly, I have to show you something

Jayce: ok

Jayce: I'm going

Viktor and Jayce often give massages to each other. Actually like really often, since Jayce comes from the forge very sore and Viktor struggles with his back and leg pain. It's like a normal thing people would see if they came in the lab at any time. They just talk normally during it, too.

Viktor draws designs for canes he wants to have. He has 2 or 3 to choose from so he can match his vibe. But when his illness got worse and he needed the bigger cane he stopped drawing and just used that one. He didn't really care at that point.

I think this is canon but Jayce bites his fingernails. When he was little he was the type to bite too far and get to the part that was glued to the skin, but when he grew up (after his mother told him too many times) he just bit them as far as the white part goes, keeping them a healthy short. That's why in the cave his nails didn't seem to grow longer.

Also, if Jayce is not biting his nails he's biting something else. Viktor gifted him a baby teething toy once and broke it the next day.

Viktor puts music on his record player to get ready for work. Usually jazz, classical, or something with no lyrics. Example of song I think he likes:

Viktor likes music with no lyrics most of the time. During the day he'll hum the song he was listening to in the morning.

Jayce can't read sitting like a normal person. He has to do circus contortionism. If he doesn't he'll just not read at all.

Viktor naturally has really soft and low maintenance hair, and Jayce needs to put a thousand products in it to keep it barely fine (curly, thick, greasy hair that grows extremely fast and it's prone to frizz). A lot of his activities revolve around his hair wash day so he can do public and important activities when it's just washed. He used to shave before because the beard made him look a lot older, but also because he has a history of ingrown hairs that made his life impossible, so he kept it clean shaven.

Viktor LOVES very intensely Zaun's fast food. And often brings some to the lab:

Jayce: Hey, what's that? *pointing to a greasy open box Viktor's carrying*

Viktor: *entering the lab* Cheese slugs!!! Do you want some?

Jayce: ... Excuse me, what?

Viktor: Cheese slugs *walks towards Jayce and hands him the box. Inside there are around 10 slugs covered with cheese sauce, it smells like pure grease, various types of cheese and humidity* They're really good.

Jayce: Viktor, uh... That's... No, thank you.

Viktor: Come on! They're delicious *he grabs one and eats it, getting cheese all over his lips. Then, he licks them like he ate the absolute best meal of his life*. If gold was food, this would be it.

Jayce: No, no, thank you but-

Viktor: *grabs one and puts it in front of Jayce* Eat it.

Jayce: *with disgust, he takes a bite from the slug while Viktor holds it. Viktor awaits, but Jayce almost immediately turns a shade of green and grabs the nearest trash can and throws up like he just ate poison* What the fuck... What the fuck is this, V...

Viktor: *outraged by his response* A delicacy. *grabs the box and goes to sit in the nearest chair to keep eating* Not my problem that you can't appreciate a good meal when presented to you, Talis.

Jayce writes quick poems in his notes. Just small stuff that barely rhymes and/or has structure, but it's cute.

Viktor reads Jayce's notes when he's not looking. He's very nosy in general. He subtly asks Jayce about council matters or stuff that happens at meetings and parties (Jayce knows what he actually wants to hear, Viktor is everything but subtle)

Viktor does go to certain parties and meetings, the only thing he does not do is go places that he knows are going to be filled to the brim with people or any sort of presentation with lots of people looking. He does talk to people, but only when talked to. People notice him because Jayce goes to him every time he finishes a conversation and rests his head on Viktor's shoulder. Because of this, Viktor always carries two beverages in case Jayce needs something quickly.

I think, in canon, something happened between them. I don't think they ever actually fucked, but they have definitely kissed with tongue (multiple times) and almost had sex once they were really drunk. They got interrupted because Sky was looking and screaming for them because a fire started in the lab (they were working on something and left some cables loose and connected to a current) and there was no fire extinguisher because they used the last one and didn't think something would happen again, so they didn't buy one right away. Now they have two that, for legal reasons, need to be checked every six months. They never talked about that night again because both thought the other one didn't remember.

Also, this convo:

Jayce: *coming from the forge* Hey V, we ran out of copper and I can't make the bronze to finish [pieces for a project]. I called the suppliers and they said they're not sending any until next month. What do I do? I can't change to steel since we ran out of iron already for [insert another type of piece for a project].

Viktor: I know a guy *grabs his cane and goes to the door*. If anyone asks, I went home because I felt really dizzy and needed to lay down. Something about my back brace. Got it?

Jayce: Yeah, but where are you going?

Viktor: If I told you I would have to kill you.

Jayce: 😦

Viktor: I'm joking! ... But don't say anything *walks out*

*three hours later*

Viktor: *with a cart full of boxes, entering the lab slowly as he tries to get the cart into the lab without breaking the door frame while walking with the cane, he looks exhausted* Put these in the forge. But not immediately. We have to hide these and you grab from here when you need anything.

Jayce: What the fuck is this?

Viktor: Ah... Just a... A bunch of scraps.

Jayce: *he walks up to him and helps him with the cart. He opens a box, it's filled with parts and cables in really good condition* There are not scraps, Viktor.

Viktor: If someone asks, they are.

Jayce: But V, these are-

Viktor: You talk too much, did you know that?

The other big motivation after this experience will be Silco wanting to get Vander out of the mine. Silco has no choice, he has debts, but Vander doesn't need to be risking his life

Haha, glad to hear. I was kind of worried it was gonna continue with "they get out of their lives intact and Vander is going to react by going all "I'm gonna cut through all the bullshit and just gonna say it: I love you" and Silco might react with a panicked "Kthxbye, we have to break up now" and then they manage to stay broken up for at the most a week.

Silco thinking of Vander's safety and wanting him out of the mine is sooooooooooooooooo sweet. Especially in he context of Silco's paranoia that things are not going to last between them.

Encouraging Vander to be out there, outside the mines, there's just way more opportunity to meet other people, get distracted, get drunk and fall into bed with somebody.

So that's a whole lot of risk/trust.

Especially since I figure Vander and what Vander is willing to do for Silco must be a huge boon to Silco's operation. Just way more things he can get done. So to risk that "asset" (or even be willing to give it up) is a big deal even outside of the whole emotional aspect.

I really wonder how much Silco is aware that Vander really is in with the smuggling operation just out of love for Silco. So if he were to fall out with Silco as Silco feels he likely wouldn't want to continue working with Silco even if the money was good.

I know the setting from the cartoon alone -- how do you usually make a deal with a god? I'm thinking they'll find the old tunnels, the huge statue of Janna and fresh air (like the stories Jinx heard as a kid), but it would also work if it happened after some desperate praying.

I don't think there are necessarily ways to invoke a god/demon/spirit and get their attention? I think if they are interested you they just show up.

So I think about it more as people joking about how they wish Janna or some demon showing up rather than it being a reliable strategic tool you can work with.

(I think other than Janna people mostly use Tahm Kench even though he's from another region, just figuring that in Piltover and Zaun might also know about him because they also do a lot of ship trading. I remember a Silco and Vander fic from back in the day that used a Tahm Kench deal )

Silco is just so sure that nobody would come for them because it's all a cruel and unfeeling company. I can just picture the little wheels turning "Oh, right Vander is has friends. Maybe …. having friends is a good thing?". Though maybe going rogue or making noise to find Vander and Silco would actually get Felicia and Benzo in trouble with the mine owners/overseers?

Maybe that would be too much effect on the plot? Like I said, if you can make use of it feel free, if it doesn't fit, no matter :)

It just popped into my head that that is one of the things I could picture getting Vander to "think big". Saving his cute little boyfriend from debt bondage just seems like a really romantic/heroic thing for a young guy to get excited about and it would fit with Vander's bigger focus on the people he cares about.

"What if we just destroyed the papers that say you owe them? Then you could be free, right?"

"They are protected by the company people"

"What if we ambushed them, killed everybody, took the strongbox and destroyed it?"

"… even if you did that, there are still copies up in Piltover."

For the sake of progress, they don't make the new tunnel any bigger than it needs to be. It's tall enough for Vander to kneel and punch cracks into the next lot of bedrock, but no higher. Vander breaks the rock and moves the pieces behind him; Silco moves the rocks to the larger cavern, clearing the tunnel.

Despite the three charges in Silco's pocket, neither of them are willing to use it. They don't want to risk causing another cave in.

The work is slow and tiring, and Vander's knees feel like they'll be covered in bruises by tomorrow. Silco rolls the bigger rocks out of the way. The smaller ones he lifts up and carries out, bent over in half to fit in their little tunnel.

There's no way for Vander to know if they're digging straight or starting to curve, but he can feel the sweat soaking through his shirt and the ache in his arms as they keep moving forward.

They take a break, both of them lying on the cavern floor just to stretch their backs and rest their legs.

Vander eyes the broken gas mask, the gap down the front where the metal edges bend and twist away from each other. "I almost wish Benzo was here. He'd be able to fix that."

One side of Silco's lip curls up, like he's too tired to sneer properly. They both know Vander isn't great with anything delicate and Silco might have nerves of steel but that's about the limit of his machinery knowledge. There's no way either of them can fix it. "We could try it anyway. It can't hurt our chances."

Vander rolls his head to the side, watching Silco. The strong line of his nose, the soaring curve of his cheekbones, the small chin and narrow jaw. He always thinks it's Silco's eyes that make him pretty, or the thin, delicate line of his lips, but it's everything. It's the knowing arch of his brows and the strands of dark hair falling across his cheek. Everything about him is sharp and fine, and stronger than he looks.

It's not somethingbhe wa looking for, not really, but he can't imagine his life without Silco in it. Maybe Silco should know that, since there's a strong chance they might not make it through the night.

"We're not dead yet," Silco says dismissively, before Vander can even work out the words to say.

Vander feels his own tired grin. "That could have been a nice moment. I could have said something sentimental. Something romantic."

"Your idea of romance starts and ends with: you're pretty, want to fuck?" Silco says tiredly and Vander laughs. He's not wrong.

"Are you complaining?"

They keep working, hour after hour, and their small tunnel grows longer. The lantern light is growing dimmer but Vander can't afford to worry about what they'll do when it fails. How they'll make any progress when it's just them and the dark.

He looks up at Silco's shuffling footsteps and notices his kerchief is tied across his face again. "Why are you wearing that?"

"Put yours on," Silco says instead of explaining. He hands over the broken gas mask. "I tried it. Doesn't work at all with that hole."

But the only way he'd be able to test it is if… "The Grey?"

"It's started seeping through the collapse." Silco sounds calm and collected, but his hands are clenched in tight fists. "We have some time yet. Keep going."

The spike of adrenaline helps Vander to hit harder, to force the bedrock around them to give way. He stops worrying about breaking the rocks smaller and just tries to break through to something. Something that isn't sheer rock and their inevitable deaths.

Silco doesn't complain about the larger rocks; he just rolls them along the uneven floor, pushing them out. Each time he comes back breathing heavier, until he comes back and sinks to the ground, pulling his makeshift mask off to gulp for air. His eyes are red and watering.

"Swap," Vander says. "I'll take the next lot."

"What could I do," Silco says and his voice is rough as gravel, "with those gauntlets?"

"Then rest," Vander says, grabbing the largest bits of rocks and hunching over to carry them out. He finds their cavern half full of the Grey. It's creeping through the pile of broken rock, grey-green fog spreading across the floor. It stings his eyes, makes his throat feel hot and scratchy, like the start of a bad cold.

Vander clamps a hand over his mouth and heads back to Silco.

Silco is still sitting on the ground. His eyes have stopped watering but they're still bloodshot. "We have to keep going."

"Can we seal the tunnel behind us? Buy some time from the Grey?"

Silco shakes his head and then pauses, thinking. "We could set a charge. Cause a collapse to slow it down."

"Could the whole thing cave in if we do that?"

Silco shrugs. His voice still sounds rough. "Maybe. We don't have any good options here, Vander. It's a risk, whether we do it or not."

He hates that Silco's right. If they do nothing, they have to hope to dig somewhere before the Grey fills this whole tunnel. "So, best case scenario, it doesn't collapse above our heads and it seals the entrance?"

"Best case? There's enough silt above us to seal it tightly, and we dig somewhere before we breathe all of the air in one small, sealed tunnel."

"So, suffocation, suffocation or being crushed to death? What do you think?"

"Set the charges," Silco says grimly. "If we're crushed, it's quick. If we run out of air, we'll fall asleep and never wake. It's better than dying with your lungs burning as you claw at your own throat."

OOO i love these, they feel very in line with my own headcanons for him! Ethan (HGSS) Character Headcanons

Continuing with the New Bark Town trio headcanons!

Starring Ethan next:

So unlike Lyra, Ethan doesn't really do anything in the main storyline (same as the games, really, if you choose Lyra as the player character).

I thought maybe it would be cool if he had some kind of connection to the legendary beasts? since I associate Silver with Ho-Oh and and Lyra with Lugia. So basically, he experiences the Suicune/Eusine subplot instead of Lyra

A huge part of his character arc involves figuring out what he wants to do with his life. Living in a tiny town such as New Bark, he was always convinced that he had to go out and do Big Things™ with his life---and he kind of does while he's out with Eusine and later competing in the Pokelathon. But while doing so, he ends up overlooking what really matters: the people (and pokemon) close to him. And eventually he learns that not only is it fine to have an "average" life, it's actually kinda preferable in some ways.

I think the way it would go is that while he's out on his journey, he happens to encounter one of (or all of) the legendary beasts but it's scared off by the arrival of Eusine. Ethan asks what in the world just happened and Eusine starts explaining the ✨lore✨. He ends up accompanying Eusine on his quest in the hopes of another legendary encounter (though he doesn't really care about Eusine's reasons. he's used to just nodding along to Lyra's infodumping and Eusine isn't really any different. so). Slowly though, he starts to warm up to Eusine, genuinely getting invested in his efforts to bring back the legendary beasts and learning a bit about maturity/empathy on the way. It ends at Cerulean Cape like in the games, except Ethan doesn't catch Suicune and the event is left on a hopeful note that the beasts can in fact regain their trust in humanity.

His maternal grandmother was very hard on his mom during her child, so he ended up getting raised with much more relaxed rules. Unfortunately, rarely getting in genuine trouble, he kind of got used to getting away with more than he really should've. He ended up a little too confident and even a little self-centered at times as a result, though he's never intentionally mean-spirited.

(unfortunately the exact timeline/story beats are still very much undecided. so. can't elaborate on the specifics for now :/ )

He was the first person to really bring Lyra out of her shell when they were kids. Back then, she had the impulsive ideas but he was the one to actually go through with them. Some of their antics included climbing the windmills in New Bark Town, sneaking into the pen of a very wild pokemon Elm was studying, and sailing down the river on Route 27 all the way to the ocean on a poorly made raft, none of which were very successful. Kris tried to do damage control when she could, but as a research assistant there was no way to keep an eye on them at all times.

After Lyra chose Totodile and Silver stole Chikorita, he was left with Cyndaquil. He already had a starter pokemon (Marill) but since Cyndaquil was left by itself, Elm decided to offer it to Ethan and he was like "yeah why not." His third pokemon is a Pichu, specifically the spiky-eared Pichu (how'd get it without already having a shiny Pichu? Great question, moving on---).

He's actually the weaker battler compared to Lyra and Kris, but what he lacks in skill he makes up for in sheer willpower. by which I mean he likes to act big and cocky and tough when he really isn't. Dude loves his pokemon but just has no idea how to battle, he just does whatever feels right in the moment.

He still loves competition though, so when the chance came to compete in the Pokeathlon he was absolutely pumped. He and his pokemon are later considered one of the best teams, and he kinda becomes a celebrity---not necessarily mobbed on the streets, but definitely a well-known name to anyone who keeps up with the sport.

While he's competing, he lives with his grandparents in Goldenrod and helps out around their daycare. They don't initially approve of his participation, but he gets money for winning and he promotes the daycare every chance he gets so they can't really complain.

Partially due to the advertising, business at the daycare blows up and Ethan eventually "retires" to focus on it. He doesn't bother announcing it or anything, he just kinda stops showing up to the Dome. When interviewed about it, he responds "oh yeah, I'm actually done competing lol. anyways if you need any top-tier daycare services---"

He ends up taking over the daycare for his grandparents once they're older and it's too much for them to handle. He occasionally helps Elm with his research since he deals with pokemon eggs and evolutions so often.

Between the Pokelathon and helping out at the daycare, Ethan gains a decent amount of muscle. It gets to the point where he can just throw his friends over his shoulder without warning and parade them around, and it's his favorite thing ever. Kris will just hang there chilling, Lyra will burst into laughter until she's set down, and Silver will either quietly sulk or cuss Ethan out depending on the mood he's in.

He's cousins with Red on his dad's side! They both know the basics of Kantonian Sign Language because sometimes, it's easier to sign than miming or pulling out their pokegears to communicate when Red goes mute (though it's not their main form of communication). He really looked up to Red as a kid, so when his older cousin goes missing, he takes it as best as he can even though it's still really hard on him.

He cuts his own hair because it "looks cool." Eventually he figures out how to do it well, but for a while his hair just looks like he put it under a weed eater and called it good.

He's the kind of guy to wear shorts no matter the weather. It's fine when he's living in New Bark Town, but unfortunately for him Goldenrod tends to be a bit more chilly. Not that he'd ever actually admit to being cold, of course---he's too cool for that (pun intended >:] )

Despite getting flak from his friends for occasionally lacking common sense, he actually grows to be very emotionally intelligent. He's easily able to pick up on what other people are feeling and works around that during conversations, which is part of the reason he gets along with almost everyone (helps that's he's super charismatic---not in an attractive way necessarily, just a big lovable dork kind of way)

Despite being naturally friendly, he also returns exactly the attitude he's given. He and Silver's friendship has a very rocky beginning, with the two of them tolerating each other for Lyra's sake until they manage to find common ground (and Silver becomes a little less of an ass)

He hands out nicknames left and right---Crystal, Lyra, and Silver are Kris, Ly, and Silvs respectively. The more he dislikes someone, the more outlandish (and/or insulting) their nickname tends to be.

I have conflicted feelings about this....

💸🎭 Your mother moved you both out to NJ after a nasty divorce with your father. It was something you saw coming a long time ago. You met Ford in your science class and immediately took a liking to him.

🎭 He liked you, because you shared an interest in science fiction and the supernatural. He never really felt understood by anyone besides his brother, so he felt relieved that he could talk to you and feel heard.

🎭 You were really interested in his 6 fingers. You had never met anyone with that many fingers and it intrigued you. You thought it was kind of badass.

💸 You met Stan outside of school when running an errand for your mother. You did not have a good interaction. In fact, he was quite rude to you. It wasn't your fault, you had just caught him at a really bad time. He had just gotten into it with his father and was trying to find a space safe he could let his anger out and you happened to be the target.

💸 When Stan saw you at school, a few weeks later, he decided to apologize to you. You didn't even realize him and Ford where twins- You wouldn't find that out until later. You weren't very open about his apology, but decided to accept because people have bad days.

💸 He wants to make it up to you, but isn't sure how. He finds out you're new to New Jersey, so he offers to show you around. You take up the offer, because you would like to know where to hang and stuff
