chapter 16 - did i mean nothing?

synopsis: you move to new york to start fresh, hoping to find comfort in the city’s atmosphere. that’s when you meet sarah cameron, where she takes you to a concert and you catch sight of the lead band member, rafe cameron. it only takes a moment for you to realize you’re captivated by him. as sarah helps you navigate your new life in the city, you start to get pulled deeper into rafe's world—the music, the fame, the chaos. the more you get to know him, the more you realise that rafe is not just the rock star he seems to be. he’s wrestling with his own demons, and the last thing he needs is someone like you getting close.

the cold night air hit your tear streaked face as sarah, cleo and kie led you out the club.

"hey it's okay, you don't need to stay and watch that bullshit. what a great fucking friend cara is." sarah spoke.

"i didn't like her as soon as i met her" cleo mentioned.

"not right now cleo." kie shushed her. "look, it was all from her side right? rafe wasn't doing anything or initiating anything back so everything is ok i promise." she said, wiping your tears.

"i know you're right" you agreed, "i just can't believe she would do this. i don't understand."

"she's a cunt is what she is." sarah firmly said, earning a small smile from you. "i'm sending her home first thing tomorrow. i'll pay for her flight."

"no sarah stop."

"i'm serious, don't want her anywhere near you or us or him."

"oh fuck." cleo said, panic overtaking her face.

"what?" you mumbled, your heart racing at her distress.

"i am so sorry y/n," cleo whispered.

"cleo." your stomach dropping, "what is it?"

she turned her phone around and your heart dropped at the screen. rafe and cara face to face, lips almost touching. there was no denying the photo.

"oh my god" your voice fell, tears threatening to fall again.

the girls said nothing, but rubbed your back as you sobbed on the side of the pavement. no words could describe the way you were feeling.

"lets get you home y/n, i'll take you to mine." sarah finally spoke.

after a long, silent taxi ride home, you got out the car and straight into sarah's bed, tears not stopping.

you felt drained, your chest aching. the girls had tried everything to distract you, but you couldn't stop staring at the photo, like staring at it long enough would make it disappear.

but it wouldn't. it was real.

you couldn't process that rafe would do this to you. the boy who had loved you, written songs about you, confessed his deepest issues to you, trusted you. how could he have let this happen? did the last 8 months mean nothing to him?

"okay no more of that." sarah said, taking the phone out of your hands. "do you really think he would do that to you? i mean the photo isn't clear, he could've been talking to her?"

"come on sarah. you saw them together too." you mumbled.

"i just don't get it. he is so in love with you." she replied.

"cleary not." you huffed.

"that's not true and you know it." kie said.

"he told me i was different. that he'd never felt this way before." you spoke as the tears falling again. "i don't know what to do."

"look, we don't know the full story ok? there is nothing we can do." cleo chimed in. "i know it doesn't feel like it right now, but you're going to be okay."

"and i swear to god, when you're ready, we'll make sure they regret this." kie stated.

you swallowed hard. regret. did rafe even feel regret? did cara? or were they still at the club, laughing, dancing, kissing, like none of this even mattered?

your stomach twisted. did you even matter?

sarah must’ve sensed the storm in your head because she gently took your hand, squeezing it. “don’t do that. don’t let them make you feel like you weren’t enough. they weren’t enough for you.”

you let out a bitter laugh, eyes still glossy. “then why does it feel like i’m the one who lost everything?”

kie sighed. “because you’re a good person y/n. and they’re not.”

you wanted to believe that. you really did.

instead, all you could do was lie there, staring at the ceiling, trying to breathe through the pain.

because no matter how much your friends reassured you, one thought haunted you.

rafe had promised forever,

and forever had ended with a single photo.

I am also wondering what you are planning for Ren… dog? Is he doing to become Rencat now, or will he be an odd-one out?

This is one of the main reasons I haven't tried to design Ren, Martyn, and a few others, it's that I just see them as other animals- yes, I think it would be fun to have a few odd ones out, but I would like to have a solid cat base for everyone... then I will dabble with hybrids and stuff ;)

Queer irl, character: have you ever seen him interact with literally anybody.

Have you seen the guy? He's one of the gayest straight guys I've ever seen. His character is loyal to people in a really gay way. Even if he ends up betraying them, he does that in a gay way too. Martyn with Mumbo, Scott, Ren . . . especially Ren. You only have to watch them interacting for MAYBE five minutes to understand how soul crushingly gay their characters are for each other.

Uhhh He's gynesexual irl (I think?), and also c!Martyn has probably kissed SEVERAL men. See for instance, MumboJumbo. They were literally Husbands in Last Life. In LIMITED LIFE him and Scott were VERY fruity with eachother and in 3RD LIFE him and Ren were gayer than Gay sex itself (Doomed Yaoi at it's finest.) Like, you don't just chop off your King bsf's head to test your trust, love and unyeailding devotion to him and NOT admit that it's kind of gay. In the Pirates SMP he said his character was Pansexual and also was apart of the Kestrel faction filled with dumb, burly men who kissed eachother, and in the Rats SMP, specifically Rats: In Paris, there was this one scene where him and Scott were kind of 𝓯𝓻𝓮𝓪𝓴𝔂 in the Captain's chair. Also in that SMP him and Ren have only one bed… suspiciously gay, is it not? This lad has SEVERAL gay quotes. like "Why aren't we smoochin'?" directed to Ren in Wild Life, and… yes I can't think of anymore gay quotes from him right now BUT STILL he has MANY MORE GAY QUOTES!!! random question based on the imp and skizz band au because im curious- is the mysterious fourth person ren from when he took over for tango that one ep, technically making him part of the heart foundation?

this might be a wild guess because i dont think ren plays the drums but hey, im jsut asking this based off the fact he could technically be counted as a heart foundation guy

It's not Ren, but I did think of another role for him since you mentioned it! He's gonna be the band's social media manager :D He does most of the posts on things like Insta and whatever else the band uses (haven't thought too deeply about it) and also occasionally just hangs out or jams with them when they're practicing. Outside of that, he's in college for acting, theater, something along those lines, because it's Ren. Obviously.

ALSO! This fic is now also treebark >:) that's right, Martyn and Ren are dating, and Martyn sometimes helps out with recording their performances or records when he has time, but it's more of a side gig than anything, and he only does it when Tango can't. But yeah,, they're boyfriends <3

Anyways, Ren was a good guess, and I'm so glad he's in the au now because I love him, but the secret fourth person was Cleo! Which people guessed pretty much instantly lol. I'm gonna make the promised art of them eventually, as well as give all their juicy backstory (and it actually has a LOT to do with why Imp and Skizz met.. ;) But in the meantime, I kinda hyperfocused on the new artstyle for a couple days and way overextended myself drawing rip, so it'll be a couple days until the Cleo art. That, and I hurt my finger in a cheese grater so it's gonna be a bit slower anyways sads, and on top of those two excuses, I made a whole lineart and then hated it and couldn't figure out what was wrong. so i scrapped it 👍

Bowser’s Castle, the Courtyard

Bowser Jr. sits on a bench in the castle’s courtyard, arms crossed, glaring at the ground. Bowser strides toward him, his heavy footsteps making the ground tremble slightly. Kamek follows close behind, his expression calm but curious. Cherry is nowhere to be seen yet.

Bowser: (gruffly) "Alright, Jr., what’s the deal? Skipping training, stomping around the castle—what’s going on with you?"

Bowser Jr.: (huffing, avoiding eye contact) "Nothing."

Bowser: (raising an eyebrow) "Doesn’t look like nothing. Spill it."

Bowser Jr.: (exploding) "Why do you care? You’re always too busy with Cleo or the kingdom anyway!"

Bowser blinks, his brows furrowing in confusion. Kamek steps forward, adjusting his glasses.

Kamek: (calmly) "Master Jr., your father does care about you. He’s here, isn’t he?"

Bowser Jr.: (ignoring Kamek, pointing accusingly at Bowser) "You only care about Cleo now! Before she came, I was the one you cared about the most. Now I’m just… nothing."

Bowser’s face darkens, not in anger but in frustration, as he struggles to find the right words. Before he can speak, Cherry appears from the castle, having overheard part of the argument. She walks over quickly but hesitates when she sees Bowser and Jr.

Cherry: "What’s going on here?"

Bowser: (sighing, gesturing to Jr.) "The kid thinks he’s been replaced."

Bowser Jr.: (spinning toward Cherry, shouting) "I have been! Ever since Cleo came, it’s all about her! And you’re just as bad as him! You’re always with her, Cherry! You don’t even care about me anymore!"

Cherry: (stunned) "Jr., that’s not true."

Bowser Jr.: (cutting her off, shouting louder) "You’re not even my real mom, so why do you pretend like you are?!"

The words hang in the air, echoing in the quiet courtyard. Cherry’s face falls, and even Bowser looks taken aback. Kamek clears his throat awkwardly, stepping back to give them space. Bowser places a firm hand on Jr.’s shoulder, his voice low and stern.

Bowser: "That’s enough, Jr. You don’t talk to Cherry like that."

Bowser Jr.: (tearing up, voice trembling) "But it’s true… She’s not my real mom."

Cherry: (kneeling down to his level, her voice soft but steady) "You’re right, Jr. I’m not your mom. I’ve never tried to take her place. But I’ve been here for you ever since you were little. I’ve cared for you, looked out for you, because I love you like family."

Bowser Jr.: (sniffling) "But it feels like no one cares about me anymore. Before Cleo, I was the one everyone noticed. Now it’s like I don’t matter."

Bowser: (firmly) "That’s not true, and you know it. You’re still my son. You’ll always matter to me."

Cherry: (nodding) "And to me too. Cleo isn’t replacing you, Jr. She’s your little sister, and she looks up to you. Do you know how often she asks about you when you’re not around?"

Bowser Jr.: (wiping his eyes) "She does?"

Cherry: (smiling gently) "She does. She thinks you’re the coolest big brother ever."

Kamek finally steps forward, his voice calm and wise.

Kamek: "Master Jr., when Cleo was born, it didn’t make you less important. It just means there’s more family to share the love with. And as the big brother, you have an important role to play in her life."

Bowser: (nodding) "And don’t think for a second that we’ve stopped caring about you. You’re still the prince of this kingdom, Jr., the heir to the throne! And nothing’s going to change that."

Bowser Jr.: (looking down) "I- I..didn’t mean to say you’re not my mom, Cherry. I was just… mad...I'm sorry.."

Cherry: (smiling, pulling him into a gentle hug) "I know, Jr. And I forgive you. But I hope you know I’ll always care about you, no matter what."

Bowser: (gruffly, crossing his arms) "And next time, come talk to us instead of sulking out here, alright? We’re a family. We work through things together."

Bowser Jr.: (nodding) "Okay… "

Cherry ruffles his hair affectionately, and Bowser places a heavy but reassuring hand on Jr.’s shoulder. The three of them stand together, the tension easing as Kamek smiles faintly in the background.

Kamek: "Well, now that that’s settled, perhaps it’s time for Master Jr. to return to his training?"

Bowser Jr.: (managing a small smile) "Yeah, I guess."

Bowser: (smirking) "Good. And maybe I’ll join you. Let’s see if you’ve still got what it takes to beat your old man."

Jr. chuckles lightly as the family heads back inside, the atmosphere lighter now.

The argument gets heated and Blacksheep seas something she does mean. Cleo is furious from the argument and Blacksheep saing Cleo is not her heal mom makes the woman snap. She instantly regrettes if and apologies. Father this Blacksheep sleeping in Cleo and Bellum's bedroom and Cleo keeps her close and dotes on her as way to say sorry.

Blacksheep doesn't mind because she is really upset with herself for saying something like that to her mom. For the next while she uses mom or mama as many times as possible, even if she doesn't need to.

Cleo gets many drawings from her and a poorly baked cake because Blacksheep decided to ask Bellum for help. The only reason the faculty kitchen didn't burn down is because Shadowsan and Brunt found them just in time to stop them from putting a plastic bowl with cake mix in the hot oven.

because i’ve seen so many of them i’d like to share what i think the objectively correct order for “god games” is (out of the life series winners)

ATHENA: …not a winner, but i’m going to say gem. while i really wanted to include cleo somewhere in here, i didn’t think it worked out as well as the one i have now.

ODYSSEUS: Joel! cause, you know. guy who really really loves his wife, has mildly psycho tendencies after facing death, and sassy. and jade duo!

APOLLO: Grian. “you all know i’m a fan of catchy songs” would probably have to be something to do with traps or something (considering joel’s talent of somehow continuously fucking them up), but the way a lot of people have agreed that apollo really did not give a fuck and was just there to bug athena/gem…it felt right.

HEPHAESTUS: Scott. you may be seeing a pattern. “trust is not given it’s forged” isn’t the most scott-coded line ever but he’s got some crazy trust issues so you know. he’s also really not a fan of betrayal, either. sacrificing his teammates isn’t something he’d ever do, since he’d rather sacrifice himself. he’s also one of the ones that can be most reasoned with.

APHRODITE: who else as the goddess of love than the alone and only pearlescentmoon. in the song, aphrodite is upset about odysseus leaving his mother rather than the bloodshed. being more upset at the abandonment rather than the unfathomable amounts of blood is very pearl-coded to me.

she’s also the one least able to be reasoned with in the song. athena/gem recognizes why she’s so angry, and in the end, athena turns to just pleading. considering pearl and gem being such close friends, i imagine this would happen there, too.

ARES: Martyn. the little bloodthirsty psycho. when someone he really cares about is being threatened (cough ren cough), he’s not one to stand idly by. he’s upfront and unsubtle. also, ‘mars’, his fandom-assigned celestial object, is the roman name for ares.

TELEMACHUS: i actually have no clue i’m ngl. someone both joel and gem are friends with and is seen as weak? jimmy might work

HERA: the dramatics have to go to scar. aside from the theatrical vibe and colorful feathers being very scar, he doesn’t really care about whatever joel did. so he’s just listening to gem name all these reasons and he’s like “uh huh” until she says: “never once has he cheated on his wife.”

ZEUS: again, while i wanted to include ALL the winners, cleo just didn’t fit. so, this goes to a watcher. who better to organize unnecessary games that are doomed to fail?
