I've just discovered your half canary Jimmy AU and I'm in love! I've gotta ask, is the curse still progressing? Also, do you think he'd ever use a cane for his limp? Speaking as someone who does actually have a length difference in my legs and uses a cane, it really helps a lot- and actually works better in the opposite hand, the one he still has! He might be a bit proud to try it tho lol

(Just a heads up, I’m able bodied so to all those more knowledgeable than me, feel free to correct me or spitball some ideas!)

Physically I don't think the curse is going to develop in any significant way. One of main appeals of the curse (to the watchers) is watching Jimmy struggle to exist in a body made of two halves that simply don't work together. He doesn’t get to enjoy the privileges of being fully avain or human. So the curse progressing in a way that would make Jimmy more canary than human would remove from that extra bit of sweet sweet suffering.

I imagine that during the early days of the curse Jimmy used a cane until they found a mobility aid that suited him better. Due to the very active life Jimmy lives and many elements of his life requiring a lot of movement and at least one free hand (things like MCC and the life games) his main mobility aid would be a custom pair of shoes designed to even out his footing (via very thick soles). However whenever he’s not wearing the shoes or by some miracle he gets to enjoy a nice chilled out day he might find himself returning to his cane. 

Being the stubborn man that Jimmy is, at first he may have been reluctant to try out the mobility aids however I highly doubt that would have lasted very long. One sly comment from Scott about Tim inevitably placing 40th in MCC (and Tim knowing he needs to win the life games) was all it took for Jim’s stubbornness to take a sharp turn and instead focus on returning to being functional and independent as fast as possible.

Professional bird teaches the newly cursed how to preen

This takes place when Jimmy is still very new to the whole being cursed situation. 

Jimmy has known Grian for quite a while at this point so it’s common knowledge that Jim has had his fair share of times preening Grian. Because of this, keeping Jimmy’s feathers in check is likely not at the top of any of the emperor's concerns while they’re trying to help Jimmy adjust.

However it turns out that preening someone else is very different to doing it yourself especially with all the extra issues such as the feathers covering half your body and only having one arm to work with.

Jim is hardly the kind of person that’s reluctant to ask for help but considering how everyone has already been doing so much to help him out on top of running their empires (plus Jim’s guilt surrounding the life games). He figures that since he can “somewhat” preen and it’s not causing as many issues as other elements of the curse he’ll put up with it. Besides none of the other emperors are avian (this may change, my knowledge of empires is a bit limited lol) it’s not like they’d be able to help all that much.

Lo and behold when the resident avian comes to visit he’s not too pleased with the state of Jim’s feathers and insists on preening them (partially because he cares about jimmy, partially because damn just looking at those god awful wings is making him feel itchy).

This leads to a nice selection of moments where Grian has to teach Jim how to bird. Although it's mostly done alongside a long string of playful insults (God forbid they have a sweet wholesome moment together).
