“He had these eyes!” Luo Binghe heard Shen Yuan say to another disciple he could not quite name, “They were so pretty, shiny like little diamonds!”

Luo Binghe stopped in his tracks. Could Shen Yuan…could Shen Yuan be talking about…no..surely…surely not. He misheard.

He listened in more intently, he needed to make sure Shen Yuan was not talking about a boy!

“You should have seen him!” His disciple practically swooned, releasing a dreamy sigh.

“Um. Sure,” The disciple he was speaking to said, “I think, uh, I think I’ll pass, Shidi.”

Shen Yuan looked at him as if he’d insulted 10 generations of his ancestors. Luo Binghe listened on.

“What!” Shen Yuan started arguing, “Why would you pass up an opportunity like that! He was so beautiful and regal, how could anyone pass up such a creature!”

Luo Binghe’s heart sank, Shen Yuan sounded like he was…in love with this man.

Who could it be? Who could make Shen Yuan spout such— such nonsense! “Beautiful”? “Regal”? Who could be more beautiful and regal than the Emperor of the Demon Realm himself! Clearly, if Shen Yuan called someone else that, he was not as smart as Luo Binghe thought him to be! Hmph! He’d just have to bring him back on the right track—

“I don’t mean to sound rude, Yuan-Shidi,” The other disciple said, exhaustion showing through his voice, “But I have no interest in white diamond octopus-leopards. I had to fight one on a nighthunt once, those things are morbid.”

The words hit Luo Binghe hard enough to stumble to the floor.

White Diamond…Octopus-Leopards. A-Yuan was talking about. A White Diamond Octopus-Leopard. Someone. Kill him now, Luo Binghe could not handle being second to an Octopus-Leopard.

Pre-Exams Days me : realizes that nothing and nobody is stopping me from word-vomiting my love for Lan Sizhui. 

Like, look at him. He’s gentle, thoughtful and resourceful. He’s handsomely pretty.  He’s Baby but reliable. He’s adorable but cool.

In one non-existent mdzs fanfic I would have him go on an investigation with his friends (bcz Friendship is Wholesome). Also I could ship him with anyone but that’s another story. If I were a bit mean he would have to face some life-threatening menace and get out of it injured but victorious, because that’s usually the fate of my fav characters (sorry). He’ll be cared for though, by his friends of course and Wangxian who are basically his parents.

I would have him explore his relationship with Jin Ling (best friend slash cousin). They could support each other as they face their new responsibilities as Sect Leader and Sect Heir. They would sometimes meet up at Lotus Pier, and yeah Yunmeng-bros reconciliation is happening. Jiang Cheng deserves better, much love to him, and I’m sure he’ll get along well with Sizhui.

Jiang Cheng : * proud * ah yes, my nephew who is sensible. I’m sure he’ll take care of my nephew who is not sensible. 

(Cue Lan Sizhui acting self-sacrificing because yeah, he’s Wei Wuxian’s son alright. Jiang Cheng decides that both his nephews need their legs broken.

Jin Ling : Why am I included-)

I could give Sizhui an adventure involving only him and Jingyi, his childhood best friend, because they’re just adorable together and so loyal, literally ride-or-die for each other.

I could have some junior disciples(/villager) have a crush on Head Disciple(/Peerless Cultivator) Lan Sizhui because, again, look at him. 

Me reading MDZS for the first time : Who’s he and why is he so perfect ? (Let me tell you if I were there, a fanclub would definitely exist.)

What about a competition between Sects ? He would end up first when it comes to musical techniques and archery at least. (Sorry I make the rule. Also I believe Wen Ning is a good teacher.)

In another non-existent mdzs fanfic, an original character would want to court him (listen, outsider pov is sexy). Watch him win hearts even as his Wen heritage is discovered. Watch him grow and become even more settled, confident in his own abilities. This other talented new Yao Head Disciple threatening his position as the most eligible bachelor discovered his secret ? One dangerous joint Lan-Yao nighthunt later, that dude would promise him protection if he ever were persecuted for the blood coursing through his veins.

i love that wwx after being resurrected (as soon as he's made sure the ducklings are safe) immediately runs off to nighthunt, sniff out graves, investigate curiosities, etc. no matter what he goes through, he never ever mopes or wallows, he's always onto better things!

and after he reunites with lwj, though he relies on him so much, even though he literally can't sleep without snuggling up with him, he still thinks, 'If he didn’t meet Lan WangJi when he came back, Wei WuXian didn’t know what he’d be like right now. In reality, even if he roamed around alone, it wouldn’t necessarily be that bad. But no matter what, he believed that nothing would be better than this.'

he loves lwj so much, not because he thinks he needs him, not because lwj has helped him or saved him or because he can't live without him. but because he just likes being with him so much!! so much that he wants to be together with him every day for the rest of his life!!! and he thinks nothing could possibly be better than that.

TBH I considered posting this fic here but I truly can’t be bothered to figure out how to put all the links and everything so I’ll just post the whole fic once it’s finished on AO3. In the meantime, I have literally So Much to say about this fic because it’s been rotting my brain for weeks now, and there’s only so much I can fit in the author’s notes, so here we are!

First Interlude:

I added this chapter after I finished the main part of the fic because my beta reader suggested I give Cai Yiben some more screen time, and I thought it was a good idea. He's just so whipped for Jiang Yanli, which is so fucking valid of him.

I didn't want to go too deep into his character and background story, as this fic is about Jiang Yanli, but I do have some little headcanons that I'll share here:

-Cai Yiben is a spoiled only child of two well-off imperial court physicians and was given the opportunity to cultivate a golden core after his parents pulled some connections and got him an apprenticeship under a Wen subsidiary clan cultivator physician. It took Cai Yiben five years to completely overshadow his mentor, who scrambled to find more things to teach him.

-Wen Muhuo fell in love with him after Cai Yiben stitched him up after a nighthunt and properly courted him. Despite not loving him, Cai Yiben accepted as it would further his career. Cai Yiben didn't hate Wen Muhuo, and eventually grew to love him, but it wasn't the same kind of love, which strained their relationship.

-Wen Qing learned everything she knew from Cai Yiben in the first life because he kept meticulous journals of his experiments, thoughts, and ideas. She also figured out Cai Yiben was trans based on those journals, a secret she took to the grave. She thought of him as her dad, given her actual father was largely absent most of her life.

-He knew he was trans by the time he was ten, but didn't say anything. His mentor suspected, but was waiting for him approach first. He never did.

-Wei Ying is the first person Cai Yiben has met that shares his gender fuckery, albeit in a very different (more chaotic) way.

-Wen Qing's first official surgery is a theoretical, heretical, never-been-done-before top surgery on Cai Yiben. It is a resounding success; the notes and thesis of it is carefully filed into the Wen records for future prosperity but is not shared publicly.

I have been toying with the potential of letting Wei Wuxian achieve his mpreg dreams in my fic (in the future, not yet) but I needed names. I ended up finding a bunch I liked and decided “yeah it makes sense those two would have a big family between them lmao. Some of them also are given the Wei surname (partially because of Wei Wuxian’s reluctant founding of the Scattered “Yiling” Wei Sect, partially to dissuade passing over A-Yuan just because he’s adopted. They don’t want him to feel like he’s not really their son!)

So far I have:

Wei Zhao (the son born after unlocking this ability. His name means Bright or Clear, but also: Manifest, which is what WWX was going for) 

Wei Gong (name means meritorious deed or service) 

Wei Heng (Bell, a daughter. LQR was annoyed with her being named Wei as it has been a long time since a daughter was born to the main branch of the Lan Clan) 

Lan Lu (Beautiful Jade, the main branch Lan Girl LQR has dreamed of) 

and Lan Cui (Wei Wuxian wanted to be a smartass and name his only biological Lan son the character that means “Mourning clothes” but Lan Zhan wouldn’t allow it. They compromised and chose “a high mountain” as the meaning, even though the pronunciations are different) 

A-Zhao is probably not born until Sizhui is  6-7 with the other children averaging 3 years between them, resulting in Lan Cui, the youngest, being born during the year that CANON took place

Anyway, Shen Yuan sees kneeling little white lotus Binghe holding his veil with Elder Sky Hammer barreling down on him, and can't help but take the blow. (His beast mount total chomps that trash to pieces afterwards)

He gets poisoned, everyone is upset etc,.

Cut to Qian Cao, they ARE SUFFERING. First of all, how can they work with literal sleeping beauty in their midst???

And then the unconscious Shen Yuan's numerous "visitors" that they have to beat away like fleas. Because Shen-shidi is not able to take visitors ! Go away !!

(They still end up finding people and gifts in Shen Yuan's room. It looks like a shrine.)

Liu Mingyan is the only one allowed in lmao.

Moving on, Shen Yuan is trying to live his life, but he'll just be doing errands around the peaks and it takes him HOURS. He gets stopped so many times just for people to say something like

🥺👉👈 "Shen-shidi exhibited such virtue and grace in saving Liu-Shixiong! Shen-shidi's moral character is truly peerless....and the way you defeated that demon! w-would Shen-shidi show this one that one move you did sometime..?.."

Not to mention all the times someone will just run up and shove a gift into his arms and s p r i n t away, Shen Yuan doesn't know where to put all it! If he ate all the sweets, cultivator or not, they'd have to roll him down the mountain...

Maybe sometimes him and Liu Mingyan go nighthunting and the villages SWEAR they were visited by divine nymphs or something

The first few times they did Cang Qiong actually got missives about heavenly beings walking among the commons and sent some disciples to investigate.. they wised up eventually and just stopped answering such letters if they knew the two had been in the area recently.

i am so fucking DOWN for the Devastating Beauty shen yuan headcanon

imagine he gets transmigrated as an Original Character (no System maybe or just a System thats less restrictive bc hes an OC) and he just cant understand why everyone and their mother are scrambling to get their hands on him (hes a once in a lifetime celestial-level beauty). then he gets picked up by Cang Qiong's Beast Peak Lord because of the rumors that he isnt human but is instead some kind of mystical creature ?

he spends most of his time worrying that the protagonist would murk him for being a man in his universe so he tries his best to be as much of a background character as possible. his peak lord insists on him wearing a veil a la liu mingyan and shen yuan is like THATS GENIUS.

.... and the unforeseen consequences of informally adopting every child you come across.

Wei Wuxian, facing the twice-mothly assembled mob of cultivators at his doorstop: "Can I help you?" -distant explosion and screaming- Enter Mo Xuanyu with much shorter hair than he had this morning: "Daaaaad, I mean Senior Wei look at what Xue Yang did to my hair!!!!" Xue Yang -still clutching the smoldering remains of whatever talisman they were fooling with-: "You promised you wouldn't tell!"

Meanwhile Lan Wangji is in the background, meditating as if nothing's happening. A-Yuan is quietly sitting next to him, chewing on his forehead ribbon. A Lan elder complains that only parents, spouses and children are allowed to touch the ribbon, and Lan Wangji calmly says A-Yuan is his son.

Now imagine, after that bombshell has died down a little, someone from the Jin side making a comment about how much Mo Xuanyu looks like the Jin main family and Mo Xuanyu stops trying to put Xue Yang in a headlock long enough to yell back that he wouldn't know seeing as his father literally abandoned him and his mother to die.

Xue Yang, feral cat that he is, starts describing in vivid detail what he will do to said father should he ever come forward…

The gossip spreads, because of course it does, and funnily enough Jin Guangshanis found dead at the bottom of Koi Tower's steps a few days later. Xue Yang is the most obvious suspect but it's rather suspicious how well Jin Guangyao and Madam Jin are getting along these days…

The fact that Xue Yang canonicaly shows affection by stabbing those who are mean to his loved ones is an untapped source of endless comedy in my opinion.

Imagine Xue Yang trying to justify himself to a disapproving Lan Wangji and he's all "I don't know, I just stab anyone who's pissed off me or someone I like, or if they try to take someone I like away from me."

Cue Lan Wangji remembering his bitey child days, when several of his teachers ended up with teeth marks on their arms, and that very memorable occasion when he tried to bite Nie Mingjue after deciding he was spending too much time with Lan Xichen.

Or better yet, teenage!Xue Yang at his most obstinate mood, glaring up at Lan Wangji and only saying: "He was rude to Senior Wei!" about his latest stab victim. Lan Wangji cannot find it in himself to disapprove of this thought process. Which unfortunately means that Wei Wuxian has (to his eternal despair, and he would like to point out that he absolutely did NOT sign up for this) to be the one enforcing discipline.

The thought also occurs that between Wei Wuxian, Lan Wangji, Wen Ning, Wen Qing and the murder gremlins, if anyone looks at A-Yuan wrong will never be found dead or alive or in one piece…. A-Yuan grows up blissfully unaware that he has an entire army of parents/aunts/uncles/siblings behind him. He just thinks nothing bad ever happens. And let's not even forget the ghost aunties. Or that (tragically underused) ghost lady that Wei Wuxian summons once and literally never again (unfair!)? She's always tailing behind A-Yuan and he's so used to the presence of ghosts that he doesn't even notice her looming over his shoulder. Juniors from other sects are less….comforted by her presence. She's his self-appointed chaperone

It doesn't take long for her (and the other ghost aunties) to decide they actually have four baby nephews to look after - and no amount of bitching from Jin Ling is going to get rid of them. It's either Ghost-jie or Mo Xuanyu to supervise them. And where Mo Xuanyu is, Xue Yang is not far behind so…

No nighthunting would get done with these two around. They are too fond of shenanigans.

I love the idea that modern education system implemented in Wen Sect ,and how every commoner are literate and know to count. What would other sects think of it? I like to think that other sects may tired to send their heirs to Qishen to get educated especially in higher education or hire tutors to teach them.

It's already been hinted at, but the Qishen Wen is very insular. They don't exactly interact or even like dealing with people outside of the Qishen Wen territory.

The other cultivation sects are insular in that they only focus on cultivation matters and end up neglected non-cultivation issues... like they don't really think about how the farmers feel about all the cultivators trampling through his poor fields while hunting some ghoul. Yeah, the common people usually don't like cultivators too much.

In Qishen Wen, that's different. Instead of this cultivator vs. mortal divide, it's Qishen Wen vs. not Qishen Wen.

So the Wen Sect looks at any and all ways to improve its territory. If that means free education to the common people, okay.

The Qishen Wen think about how they can use cultivation techniques to improve every day life and sells them to ordinary folks. We see one such example where the shopkeeper (or was it cashier?) presses on a talisman to alert public security services (aka police) that he needs someone (aka this Jin cultivator in front of him) arrested.

Other sects don't even realize the benefits they can derive if they provide such services to ordinary folks. They just solely focus on cultivation matters - like hunting spiritual animals, dealing with ghosts and demons, and ignore anything else. Talisman are just for cultivators and for nighthunting purposes.

Anyways, back to the original topic. The sects have no clue with what's going on with the Qishen Wen Sect. They don't know the full picture about the Wen's top notch education system or that it's open AND free to ordinary folks. They have no clue what's going on with Wen Ruohan's "harem". Heck, Jinwoo has been in MDZS for a long while now and why is it that the cultivators don't even know about him?

It's all because the Qishen Wen is not open to foreigners. They don't welcome foreigner and the only time foreigners are "welcomed" is when they have to host a discussion conference. (Who ends up hosting the Discussion Conferences is rotated between the major sects.) The Wen Sect also doesn't send its disciples outside of its territory often, so that also limited the spread of information.

Well, I should note that people are welcome to move to Qishen and join the Wen Sect. But that's because they are permanently committing themselves to Qishen. (Lao Nie just happens to be a unique exception to the rule because he's Lao Nie.)

Lan Qiren can hope to study in Qishen all he wants; he's not welcomed unless he becomes affiliated with the Wen Sect through some sort of permanent bond... like marriage.

oh wow! I didn't think you'd reply but I love talking about this so this is nice

right, what I meant about the 'moving on' was that in line with what the person who first rb your post said, jc gets that moment of self-awareness post-reckoning. Not moving on really, but the potential of coming to terms with what has happened, what you've done, and so on. What I was really thinking of as 'getting to move on' was this post I saw yesterday about how our happy ending in mdzs is really a bittersweet one with wangxian (hopefully) living relatively peacefully at the cloud recesses and the elders knowing lwj is fully ready to walk out at the drop of a hat. Because there was some progress made, even though the cultivation world doesn't have that full reckoning, there's a generation that gets to grow up and.. only take two flares with them on nighthunts? is the example I think? in the novel? (which was a mistake obviously, but the way wwx comments on how they can afford to do that in their lifetime is what I mean And they might get to have that for the rest of their life if they're lucky.

as for the canon jiang cheng achieving redemption thing, that's why I said that canon doesn't do his sunny disposition (sarcasm lol) any favours in that regard. I don't like reducing his character to him 'not having a choice' about his actions, because that takes away from his character. The fact that he let himself be pushed into mob mentality near the end of the first time period instead of standing firm and using the strength of the sect to assert himself against killing innocent people is one of the most interesting points of his arc to me. It's like he's fighting for justice and against the other factions to rebuild the jiang sect but then he also doesn't care about the fate of the wen remnants and wwx's wellbeing after all? (I viscerally remember a scene in the novel where he was rude to a-yuan!! a literal toddler!! lol canon jc is very interesting to me like How are you being rude to a literal toddler that just left a war camp. like Dude) I don't think he could achieve true redemption in that regard, but like you said, he'd have to show real remorse for that to be remotely possible and canon doesn't give indications of that. Even the drama (for all its Complex Expression Moments TM) doesn't do that. Maybe? redemption would be possible? But not in the real arc-worthy, prince zuko way. if there's anything jc could do to redeem himself post-canon the list would probably start and end with being a better person. It's weird for me to think he actually feels no remorse over his actions with the wen remnants though, because, hey, killing innocent people, so I guess that's why I'm more inclined to that interpretation of mixed feelings? the reason why I think jc might have a smidge of a chance at redemption is less because I would brush aside his canon actions and moreso because I want to see his character change and grow post-canon and that's just a personal wish for me lol. I want to see jin ling growing up and jiang cheng having become a better uncle and a better person, like, what does canon teach him? that sorta thing. I'll thank you not to put words in my mouth, but also I totally see your point with ignoring what the characters are really like in canon. I've noticed the dragging of other characters too; I love a good wwx critical any day but the total absolvement of jc's mistakes compared to it is weird. like wdym wwx could have just waltzed in with the wen remnants and jc would have accepted and it's wwx's fault he didn't? that's definitely a canon divergence thing. which is fine! maybe they're following an interpretation where the jiang sect isn't actually doing fine by the end of the war and jc loves his brother a whole lot more, enough to have a change in morals for! maybe that's what they want to see happen in the story, and I'm not going to insult ppl for not sticking to canon attributes in fic of course. I just don't think that's plausible in canon. In any case, jc is the sect leader. It's been a hot minute since I read the full novel, so I can't remember your reference to the jiang sect being restored by the end of the war as opposed to having to rebuild more of their reputation after the fact, but regardless he's the one with the position and agency to reach out there. not just help yanli get to yiling so wwx can see her in her wedding robes and then leave entirely. I can't remember exactly how the pretend fight planning went down or if it was even a pretend fight, but still; it's not like he 'didn't have a choice' or wtv and that bothrs me too *juggles tomatoes like a vendor at a crowd play*

In my opinion, redemption for Jiang Cheng's character is impossible. It’s odd how most discussions about his potential redemption always solely centre around his relationship with Wei Wuxian.

While it’s true that Jiang Cheng wronged Wei Wuxian, his biggest crime isn’t his treatment of Wei Wuxian—it’s the massacre of the Wen Remnants. His redemption shouldn’t just be centred around his relationship with Wei Wuxian, it should focus on the Wen Remnants, who were brutally slaughtered under the siege he led.

Making peace with Wei Wuxian doesn’t erase the much larger moral crime of leading a massacre against innocent people. True redemption should be about confronting the full extent of one’s wrongdoings, and in Jiang Cheng’s case, that means dealing with the massacre, not just his wrongdoings against Wei Wuxian.

Jiang Cheng never reflects on the massacre, expresses any regret for the innocent lives lost, or takes responsibility. For Jiang Cheng to even have a chance at redemption, he’d need to show real remorse for what he did to the Wen Remnants—and honestly, I just don’t see that ever happening.

2)Gusu Lans

I mean okay Lan Xichen....do you...do you know how many people would be trying to MARRY HER??? Everybody. Everybody would try and marry her.

Ability wise, both her and Lan Wangji would still be strong and nothing much would change there. I think the Lans would expect Lan Xichen's spouse to marry in. And that's that.

3)Yunmeng Jiangs

Jiang Yanli as a man and inheriting???? I'd pay good money to see this. I think m!jyl would need to be a stronger cultivator, or if he's still not strong due to health reasons... I think he would actually be WAY MORE saavy and wily, because if you can't rely on strength you gotta rely on brains. JYL knows he has to inherit, so he actually needs to develop other skills. Maybe poison? Maybe developing mechanics to help him defend lotus pier. The canon JYL is so protective of her family, as a man, he'd be even more protective of his sisters. WWX and JC as gremlin girls ... they would be the literal scourge of the land. Yu Ziyuan CONSTANTLY complaining like Mrs. Bennet like "你们俩以后怎么嫁的出去？？？” aka who's gonna wanna marry you if you keep acting like hooligans. JC as the non-inheriting child would give WAY less fucks.

4) Lanling Jins

In the latest edition of cql/mdzs rare pairs that completely blindsided me, let's talk about Jiang Cheng and Lan Jingyi.

This ship has the Vibe of that volcano experiment you had in elementary: Explosive? You bet. Educational? Probably. Wildly Entertaining? Hell yeah.

First off, endless Dramatic Potential. Age difference, power dynamics, secret relatioships, outsider povs reactions when they Find Out - take your pick.

Jin Ling. Half of the Drama Material alone is in the very spicy take "my best friend, and my uncle who practically raised me are together." Whichever end of the spectrum JL is on the support/acceptance scale, it's bound to be interesting.

These two are probably the most similar in temperament in the surface level but there's also enough differences to make the ship plausible. One of the things I appreciated in the rewatch is that LJY is often used for exposition dump and so he comes off as super knowledgeable about the world (eg. info on Dancing Goddess) Also, he's perceptive and smart. He's the first person to point out that WWX is not as crazy as he pretends to be as MXY. So he and JC could def have intellectual conversations (hello casefic/nighthunts)

Also when I rewatched ep 1-2 I noticed some Very Interesting things. In the few scenes they are both together with a crowd LJY doesn't speak up during tense scenes, allowing LSZ to be LWJ's Diplomatic Translator. But then there's this One Exchange when JC whips out Zidian at MY (who's already WWX) and he's like "wtf why didn't that work thats impossible" and GUESS WHO HAS THE AUDACITY TO SPEAK OUT WHEN EVERYONES INTERNALLY LIKE "wtf is going on oooh shit"

Thats right our boi LJY. Not only that but he literally says "sect leader pls stop" then proceeds to lecture JC on the features of his own spiritual weapon. LJY does Gusu Library have a cultivation wiki section because is this even public information?? How do you know these v specific things hmmmm maybe you have an inside source like the owner of the spiritual weapon?

And JC doesn't even scold him but instead Actually Slips Composure by asking him, LJY, on how he can be so sure that WWX isn't dead. LJY has to bluntly but unkindly reply that "people said you killed him." Cue JC's open heartbreak in his eyes. At this point it's a wide shot and it's a blink it or miss moment but LSZ lit squeezes LJY's hand to stop from talking at JC (and maybe roasting him)

Btw i didn't wake up one day shipping these two? Like I love JC with WQ and have enjoyed fics pairing him with WN, NHS, and LXC. LJY has been paired with LSZ and even JL and these fics I also loved

But then I read 1-2 fics that had this rare pair and thought "huh they're onto something" then I read more until I found myself scrolling through the ao3 tags and OH nO

Seriously half of the fics is either "I think your hot so let's bang together and maybe catch feelings along the way (mostly LJY)" and "outsider pov finds out about unconventional relationship. Reactions range from shocked surprise to downright decisive. More at page 11"

There's also the stories WWX and Jiaojiao have about how they came to be married- I don't think either of them is likely to be entirely accurate, but it does sound like they knew each other before they got married and both of their families thought it was a good match. There's so much room for different kinds of disaster between those lines!

Madam Yu was Jiang Cheng’s mother, Yu ZiYuan. Of course, she was Jiang FengMian’s wife, and used to cultivate with him as well. Naturally, she should be called Madam Jiang. But, for some reason, everyone had always called her Madam Yu. Some people guessed that it was because she didn’t want to take on her husband’s surname due to her assertive personality. On this matter, neither the husband nor the wife in question had ever argued either.

I'm 95% sure mxtx's response to my whatdoesitmean.jlaw would be "lmao don't worry about it" but really, what does it mean? Why do random gossips think this is a girlboss moment?? What is the tone of "had [n]ever argued either"? Does JFM not care? Does he feel like he shouldn't care or like fighting or even asking is pointless?
