I like the idea of finishing them but CSP crashed three times and there's only so much I can take
Notes, as is becoming habitual
Neil, Kevin, and Nicky all have minor changes since I do still like their designs. (Neil's eyes and tail have changed, along with Kev's shoulder/half chest guard, and Nicky's lute is now 'upside down' so he can easily bring it to the front of his body w/o taking it off)
Matt is a half-Dragonborn druid, I'm torn between copper and brass (he WAS not going to have tights but he deserves pants)
Dan is a fire Genasi Fighter
Allison is a high-elf wizard/sorcerer
Renee is a Drow cleric
I like even parties so I tried to do that while keeping with their canonical personalities and histories (or as close as I could). I did want to add less human-looking designs but decided to stick with things that would make them still recognizable as themselves (which is why Matt is only a HALF Dragonborn and everyone else is a humanoid race)

Been holding a thought on my brain for too long abt putting Desmond in Situations: have you watched Dimension 20's The Unsleeping City? At least s1. Bc 1) watch it, it's so good & 2) I specifically in this situation think abt Bad Weather being the normal version of the bar in Broadway that Kingston & Misty go to. Pre-canon Desmond seeing past the Umbral Arcana & getting involved in magic shenanigans..... Yeah.
You know his latent Eagle Vision is peeling out & seeing the magic shit happening in New York City. You KNOWWWWW. Please tell me one of your followers has been thinking this too.
I have good news for you, nonny, because I have just started watching Dimension 20 this year but I am a slow watcher so I’ve only gotten as far as the first 3 episodes of Unsleeping City season 2 (atm, I think my fav D20 moment is with the Bad Kids’ “Spring Break, I believe in you!” XD). I’m one of those few people who’s pathway to D&D and TTRPG is Oxventure→No Rolls Barred/Chaotic Neutral→Mystery Quest so I am absolutely late to the party XD
Anyway, for this one, we need to do a bit of housekeeping.
I’m basing this on the title of the opening theme New York 2006 because I think that’s the year Season 1 was set (feel free to correct me though)
This means that Desmond would be 19 at that point and we can push it that he’s already working in Bad Weather.
Now, I like the idea that Bad Weather is the normal version of the bar that Kingston and Misty goes to but, may I suggest an alternative?
An earlier possible way to add Desmond to all these shenanigans is to make Bad Weather one of the bars Sofia and Kugrash go to for their ‘hairy baby free drinks scam’.
Towards the end, maybe the last bar they go to, Desmond walks up to Sofia and requested that they leave because the big rat pet she had would make other customers uncomfortable.
Sofia and Kugrash are already drunk at this moment but they hear Desmond call Kugrash a rat and are like “you can see him???”.
Kugrash immediately remembers Desmond as one of the homeless kids he helped when Desmond first moved into the city and had clocked him as ‘strange’ because there was something about him that felt... not exactly magical but almost magical-adjacent.
This ends with Sofia and Kugrash inviting Desmond to their new party as a recruit (with Sofia thinking both (1) this boy needs someone in his life to take care of him and now I’m trying not to cry because my cheating (as far as she knows) husband and I never had kids and (2) maybe he and Pete can get along as newbies with me)
And that is how our Intrepid Heroes managed to recruit an Assassin Rogue who may or may not multiclass to Gloom Stalker in a different playstyle to Liam Wilhelmina.
.
Unorganized Notes:
This is a Desmond who doesn’t know about his destiny or his ancestors but his training on the Farm is so ingrained into him that it makes him a Rogue.
Because of his lack of knowledge, we can argue that he could turn into a Thief Rogue instead of Assassin in this one because he had never assassinated anyone before.
In terms of playstyle, he’d actually be more a close combat attacker that uses some kind of switchknife with sneak attack being part of 'bonus action: hide -> main action: sneak attack')
Another suggestion I have is for Desmond to subclass as Phantom, more because of ‘Whisper of the Dead’ where every short or long rest, he can gain one skill or tool proficiency and the flavor text describes it as one of the ghostly presence shares its knowledge to the user. Desmond has no idea what this means because this is pre-canon but this is actually his ancestors managing to create a link to him in some form thanks to the Umbral Arcana mixing with his ‘destiny’.
If you want Desmond to be given the illusion of choice and not be a Rogue, we can make him a Warlock ‘worshiping’ an unknown Fathomless. In this setup, they don’t know who Desmond’s patron is and Desmond himself just shrugs because he can do magic so that’s nice. Part of his deal is that he receives messages from his patron in the form of texts on his phone. They all come from an unknown number he can’t call and the texts are always like ‘The Scholar is pleased with your desire to learn about the history of this place’ or ‘The Prophet is worried of your health and asks that you requests your companions for a rest’ or ‘The Hunter suggests you still find a weapon even if you are using magic’ and this is some weird shit even for Kingston because it seems like Desmond has multiple patrons or maybe even an entire pantheon of unknown gods/beings.
Abstergo is going to be so fucked in this one because, by the time they try to kidnap Desmond, he’d probably be around level 10~12 and maybe even living with Pete in his apartment.
And yes. Desmond absolutely knows Ricky as Mister March as well XD

if sam is truly in a position where he has to introduce a new character, what kind of build would you wish he would try out? or would you like him to still go with a cleric?
Good question! My answer below comes down to "it depends, but I do lean towards a new but very differently flavored cleric."
I think cleric is still probably the best option. It is rough to be a party without a cleric (having played a non-cleric primary healer myself), and Fearne would have to shift pretty dramatically in playstyle if he did not at least play a strong healer. He could go for a more healing-focused druid, but that's a tall order to jump into at L13, or return to a class he knows well and play a bard. @captainofthetidesbreath suggested cleric/wizard multiclass which would also be a great idea; this party does not lack for high charisma with the witches, but could use a high intelligence character, and it's an incredibly powerful multiclass for a reason (though it would mean no higher-level resurrection spells, since the classic split is a cleric dip for a wizard thus granting them scalable healing and armor).
If I were like, Sam's advisor here (so...Liam), I'd say knowledge cleric. It would give them the perspective of a different god (Erathis? Corellon? Ioun?), it's an excuse to play high intelligence and have very good INT-based skills, it would be a very different take on cleric, but it would still have all the useful core abilities. Twilight Cleric is also RIDICULOUS (positive) and would solve a number of problems and, I mean, FCG stats but shift around Charisma/Int/Con scores a bit to be slightly less tank, much more intelligent, and uncharismatic. Would be an interesting way to bring in Sehanine. And, I should note, either knowledge or twilight could be used to make a Marquesian character which might also help fill in some lore gaps.
To talk through some other healing options: I do love Tary but I believe he was played as a Battlesmith and so that's only half healing. Paladin is an option, actually, if he plays one of the more healing-focused ones (65 lay on hands points? no joke), and I think Sam would make a good paladin in many ways (and paladin auras at L13 would be MASSIVE for the party. My one concern is that because paladins need to have good charisma and strength and a decent CON score, filling the intelligence gap gets tougher unless he rolls very good stats. I wouldn't go for divine soul sorcerer because three sorcerers is ridiculous, but Celestial Warlock wouldn't be bad either. I actually am a big fan of rangers now that the Tasha's and Xanathar's options are far better than the core build, and I really do think hybrid classes are a great fit for Sam, but I'm again a little worried about the stat demands and the quantity of healing. If I were Sam's advisor I would also have a serious talk with Ashley to see how she feels about Fearne taking on more healing to guide my decision.

Tav Loredump Round 2 (Evil Edition): Regan Coleridge
me and @ms-scholars-gown-bnoc have been embarking on our Evil playthrough while we wait for a Act 3 bug to get fixed and they're taking over our brains
LIST (from @tolkien-fantasy )
Round 1 with my good boi Ralxire
This is Regan. Human, Knowledge Domain, Cleric of Mystra. Absolutely gorgeous, but also the most power hungry woman to ever live.
Why did you pick the race you did for your Tav?
Again, I'm trying to play all the races and honestly... I think this was the only way I was ever going to play a Human. It should be the first red flag amoungst my characters - I never play humans. Especially as we'd already established my bud was going to play Drurge, I knew I was going to need to make a really neuanced Tav
Why did you pick the class you did for your Tav?
Listen... I love evil clerics. I love them. I love the idea of piety as not inherently good, but rather neutral at best. Devotion as a force of destruction is my whole shit. I also love the idea of the persuit of knowledge/power as a neutral act.
Mystra is a neutral goddess - not a good one. She is magic. Magic is a tool, something to be understood. Regan does not see magic - or Mystra - as something beautiful. It is a power that can be harnessed and should be harnessed to the extreme.
What is your character’s moral alignment?
Neutral Evil / True Neutral depending on how you look at it
How did you choose your Tav’s name, if you gave them a unique one?
The party Drurge was already called Cordelia and King Lear happens to be my favourite Shakespeare play. Regan had the right vibe for me - plus some of her scenes have been alarmingly close.....
Coleridge is an injoke just for me. I hate Coleridge. I was made to read the Ancient Mariner in a single night and I've never forgiven him for how long it is.
What are your character’s strongest and weakest stats (strength, charisma, etc)?
Highest is WIS at 18 (currently). Lowest is DEX at 8. She's a tank
What is your Tav’s origin story?
When Regan was about 10ish she was given to a clergy of Mystra. Her parents lacked the means (or, in Regan's eyes, the will) to raise her. She would have been a wizard - most precious to Mystra - but she lacked the aplitude. Knowing that ejection from the monestary would spell her doom, Regan comitted herself to reverence instead. Day in and Day out she performed perfect piety. She contented herself to a future of kneeling at Mystra's feet.
Then the mindflayers happened and suddenly kneeling didn't seem so appealing.
What was the most significant moment in your Tav’s origin story?
I think we're in it. But in truth, it's not a single moment that is significant. It's the day-in, day-out subservience of worship. That grated on her.
What deity, if any, does your character worship?
Mystra. As the font of power. In future.... perhaps a more apt god will replace her.
What is your Tav’s biggest priority or goal?
The persuit of power, enough that she may exert it on others.
If your Tav didn’t become an adventurer, what else would they be doing?
I think she'd either still be in that Temple, or she'd become the Main Villian of another DnD campagin
What is your Tav’s most used weapon or spell?
We're still pretty low level, but I think it will be Spirit Guardians.
What is your Tav’s favorite school of magic/weapon type?
Her go-to is Weapon and Shield - ideally spear or mace. She's a radient magic girl
How does your Tav fight in a combat situation?
She is in the thick of it, tanking blows and throwing out healing as she can.
Does your Tav know any other languages besides Common?
Likely several! Celestial at the minimum
If your Tav could/does multiclass, what other class would they choose?
Paladin. Hard to think of an Oath she wouldn't break for her convinience though
Which of the companions does your Tav trust most?
Cordelia/Drurge is cheating, although that's probably true. She sees Gale as imminently manipulateable, so likely him. Everyone else has too much self preservation
Which of the companions does your Tav distrust most?
Shadowheart. Cleric rivalry. Also, she's smarter than she lets on
Who is your Tav’s biggest rival?
Mystra.
Who is your Tav romancing, if anyone?
Sorry Gale......
If you’re romancing anyone, why did your Tav fall for them? And why did that character fall for your Tav?
This is some toxic stuff. This isn't a nice romance. Gale fell for her early - and who wouldn't! She's gorgeous and devoted to knowledge. She adores Gale's long winded explainations. Her relationship to Mystra is almost as complicated as his is. He just... didn't see the red flags until it was already too late.
Does Regan love Gale? I think unfortunately yes. But she doesn't love him to make him better. She loves his aptitude for magic, his boundless ambition that drew him to the Orb. She sees his folly not as a moment of weakness - a moment where his inherent insecurity led him to do something terrible - but merely poor execution. She lacks the moral compass that would make Gale better, in another timeline.
If you’re romancing anyone, who fell first and who fell harder?
Gale and Gale. Sorry, bud
How does your Tav act around their crush?
So confident. In the real world, she'd be the kind of girl to act supremely aloof around her crush and it would seem like she hated them
What is your Tav’s favorite moment they’ve had with their lover?
We haven't got to weave sex yet, but it will be weave sex
What is your Tav attracted to? What are their turn-ons and turn-offs?
Power, bby. Or, more specifically, ambition. The willingness to chase power.
Turn offs are laziness, lack of ambition and extreme morality
Does your Tav have any biases against other classes or races?
Not specifically, only moral stances
What is the most prominent color in your Tav’s color scheme?
White + pink/orange tones. Ideally I want to lean into white + gold for peak High Priestess vibes
What is their sense of humor like?
Sarcasm. A little mean, but not intentionally.
What is your Tav’s guilty pleasure?
Wine and sunbathing. Lounging like a cat. Fine, expensive things - things she's never had
How easily offended are they? How do they act when offended?
Not especially easy to offend, but if you do get on her bad side, you're never recovering
How does your Tav react when someone insults their friend/partner?
It depends what her relationship to them is. She's not quick to violence, but verbal beratement is on the table
How does your Tav dress for different occasions, like very fancy situations?
Regan would have the wardrobe of an empress if she could. Her fashion sense is like... Ethereal Seductress. That dress in Act 3 is going to be a staple
How did your Tav get their scars, if they have any?
Currently, she doesn't have any. That won't last
What is your Tav’s relationship with their family?
Nonexistant and she's going to make it everyone's problem
What is your Tav’s opinion on nobility and authority?
Complicated. She has respect for people who are "self made", but dispises those who are in power by virtue of their birth
How does your Tav react to wearing the Wavemother’s robe? How do they react to their partner wearing it?
She would wear it 24/7 if she could. She would LOVE Gale in it. She's exactly the kind of woman who would have a thing for dressing up their partner
What is your Tav’s favorite type of environment? Like in a tavern, a library, out in the wilderness, underground, etc.
Library, ruins...Surrounded by lost knowledge on all sides
What would your Tav’s Zodiac sign be?
Gemini
What is their favorite season?
Summer
Where in the world does your Tav want to visit the most?
Anywhere and everywhere. She's never really been anywhere
What is the biggest mistake your Tav ever made?
This... is tricky. Unfortunately for the world, she's pretty on the up-and-up rn. She would say something like "not finding another way to apply herself to the arcane"
What animal best represents your Tav?
You and I both know it's a Fox or a spoiled all-white Cat
What flower/tree/plant best represents your Tav?
Angel's Trumpets! Gorgeous. One of the most deadly flowers in the world, actually part of the nightshade family. The symptoms of it's poisioning are....knarly. But it's still widely cultivated because it's just so pretty. Comes in pink.
( This means that two of my BG3 characters have toxic plant connotations btw - my drurge in my solo playthrough is a Spores Druid called Amanita Ocreta )
What does your Tav smell like?
Chanel CoCo Mademoiselle
What song best represents your Tav?
When I was making her, this song came on and it was just perfect
Gale @ her though:
ALSO this is the theme for the run:
What would be your Tav’s favorite music genre?
Pop forever
What role would your Tav play in a highschool AU? (nerd, jock, bully, goth, etc)
Mean Girl. She's basically Regina George already
What is the most important item your Tav has?
Regan doesn't have many! Honestly it's money. She never had money before, she didn't need it. Now it's everything
Where does your Tav feel most at home?
The Center of Attention
What is your Tav’s philosophy on life?
That ultimately the world is merely about power. Regan has the reductive but unfortunately common view that it is the duty of the smart and capable to grab for power, and the weak to suffer. She'd be a hustler irl.....
Does your Tav think more with their heart or their brain?
She doesn't have a heart to think with
What does your Tav want in their future? (domestic bliss, more adventure, a family, etc)
Stability in a position of power. Control.
What is your Tav’s worst fear?
To be forced to serve
Is your Tav easily tricked or deceived?
Yes. Her power grabbing is transparent
If your Tav was granted a single wish, what would it be?
Godhood
How does your Tav feel about keeping secrets, both their own and others?
A necessity. Secrets are to be used and traded like all else
How would your Tav react to a love confession?
Amusement
What are your Tav’s biggest insecurities?
That someone will see her ambition for what it is - fear and insecurity.
What decision would your party have to make in order for Tav to consider splitting off from the group?
The destruction of knowledge. Sitting around waiting to die. All other positions she at least sees as malleable
What is your Tav’s favorite food?
Fruits
How generous is your Tav, especially to those they don’t know?
Regan does not believe in generosity for its own sake. Only for gain.
If an evil character told your Tav that they wanted to change and help them, would they believe it?
Hah... Well, they'd be talking to the wrong girl
What meme describes your Tav the best?
What does your Tav want to be remembered by?
Influential. Strong. Powerful. Awe
What Tarot Card best represents your Tav?
The Magician both upright and reversed
What would be your Tav’s major in college?
Buisness or Economics
Does your Tav consider themselves a hero, villain, victim or something else?
Victim or Hero. She is a Villian though
How good is your Tav at giving advice? How good are they at following it themselves?
Regan only gives advice to maniplulate others into doing what she wants or to earn their trust. She doesn't take advice. She's too self-important
How does your Tav get along with each party member?
Gale -> He loves her. She loves that about him Astarion -> They're running the same grift. They get along accordingly Shadowheart -> Tentative. Regan is who she pretends to be La'zel - > They haven't figured each other out yet Wyll - > N/A Karlach -> N/A Minthara - > Remains to be seen. But something tells me they'll get on
What are your Tav’s other hobbies?
Reading, mostly. I think she learns sections of history for fun.
(Free Spot: Ask any question you’d like!)
Weirdly, I always think about Caeser when I think of her? I think she's also aiming for like taking an obscure religious office and turning it into power.

oooo what can you tell us about ur ttrpg characters??
oh man tons, almost every single one of them I created based on a silly premise I thought would be funny and then eventually evolved into a genuine character that I'm now extremely invested in
There's Captain Widdershins, (which u may be able to tell by the name was a joke character I made for a oneshot that eventually evolved into a full campaign) who's a weathered 500 year old pirate captain with a missing arm and a golden eye who is completely off her rocker and took her warlock patronage to the goddess of the ocean as a marriage proposal. She's insane and very in love with her ocean wife and I adore her.
Caisson is a half mechanical half humanoid inventor who builds medical prosthetics and has a tiny pet dragon named Kip. Their parents were world-class weapons manufacturers and were secretly working on a doomsday device before being mysteriously killed. In an attempt to draw the assassins out into the open, Caisson announced the weapon development and claimed that they were the one who built it. This instead resulted in Caisson getting the attention of the king, who hires them as a weapons manufacturer (something they are not) for a ~mysterious quest~ oooo
Ruby and Punch are a sort of Jekyll and Hyde duo I'm playing for a Legend of Zelda campaign. Ruby is a sweet little skullkid and a level 1 bard. He's got 10 hit points and a violin and he's just out here doing his best. Punch on the other hand is a cursed theatre mask with mad sorcerer magicks who only wants two things: attention, and extreme gratuitous violence. Mechanically, Punch is the better character to have in a fight, but he's also wicked chaotic evil and is extremely self-motivated. Ruby is genuinely helpful to the party and does much better with socializing/charm based shit. Ruby needs Punch in order to not get one hit K.O.'d, Punch needs Ruby because he's got no body of his own. They work kind of like a multiclass but uh, without a lot of the benefits of multiclassing lmao bc I specifically designed them so that they both need to switch off bc the other has whatever they lack. The GM and I have spent many hours homebrewing exactly how these two idiots work just so my dreams of playing a Sweet Boi and The Worst Kind of Theatre Kid can come true.
I did a comic about Sable from the dragon age campaign I was part of for a bit, who was an Orlesian university student that ended up becoming a Grey Warden during a research trip and continued to have an Extremely Bad Time as they fruitlessly tried to find a cure for the blight. They were also the youngest of 12 siblings because I thought the idea of that was hilarious, a real Cheaper By The Dozen scenario wherein they were around the same age or younger as a lot of their nieces and nephews. The GM for that campaign actually came up with a whole family tree and names/professions for Sable's siblings and niblings which was literally the coolest shit there was a plethora of family drama interwoven in there. A sheltered teen was also... probably the smartest character choice for me to play since I've never played Dragon Age and had no knowledge of the lore lmao. Sable's obliviousness was just my obliviousness in most cases.
And Aelios is the most recent. Basically my friend I'm playing with created a character who's the son of a massive crime family, and I entirely built Aelios' concept on that. They're a barbarian who got a job as a mob goon purely so that I can do the "yeah you got it, boss" thing whenever possible. They've also got a backstory with a husband killed by demons, very storied mercenary past, and an unhealthy addiction to the drug that the crime family holds a monopoly over, but it really did start out with me just wanting to play a total meathead since I am too often drawn in by the siren song of spellcasting.
#asks#anonymous#dnd5e#dnd#i like magicks what can i say#but listen the high of having a plus 10 to athletics as Aelios is unparalleled#they're fuckin STACKED

Strixhaven Students: Prismari
In this five-part series, I’ll be creating a brand new Dungeons and Dragons character who would call one of the colleges of Strixhaven home. Each character will be built using content released in either published books or in Unearthed Arcana (UA) documents, such as the recently released Mages of Strixhaven UA.
Today, I’d like to introduce you to Fizzik Mythstone, Inspired Loremaster.
Art by ArtDeepMind - Link
From his earliest memories, Fizzik Mythstone seemed destined to join the family ranks in attending Strixhaven and being a student of Lorehold: there were many famous artificers amongst his relatives, including his uncle Hofri Ghostforge. As part of the family business, Fizzik's father trained young Hofri in the mystical arts of artifact restoration.
However, Hofri dreamed of what life could be beyond his family's plans, for Hofri had a love of the performing arts. As they worked in the family forge, Fizzik’s father would tell him the stories of the ancient weapons they worked on and the heroes who had wielded them. Hofri absorbed these tales, imagining how they could be adapted and performed. Eventually, he acted on his creative impulses and began to turn those stories into plays. And as he dreamt of larger stories, he began to learn different forms of magic to augment his productions.
When the time came to attend Strixhaven, he took his various skills and made a name for himself within his first year. Using the grand library of the Biblioplex, he even developed new methods of artifice that could be used for the stage. He eventually drew the attention of the two Prismari Deans, who offered him a place in their college.
Starting Stats (using the Standard Array)
Strength: 14
Dexterity: 13
Constitution: 8
Intelligence: 15
Wisdom: 10
Charisma: 12
Fizzik’s primary skills are his intelligence and ability to apply research that he has uncovered. He was trained from an early age to be an artificer, so spent a lot of time lifting heavy weights around the shop and then deftly moving between the various shelves. This ability came in handy when he started to work behind the scenes in various stage productions.
Race: Hill Dwarf
Fizzik comes from a long line of dwarves. When it came to looking at which sub-race to choose, I eventually settled on being a Hill Dwarf, as the Mountain Dwarf build felt like a more martial character; as Fizzik will show you, his skills lay in an arena different from the battlefield. The nice part about the dwarf race is that you get a +2 to Constitution, which helps to even out his “dump” stat.
Proficiency: Mason's Tools
Background: Entertainer
Throughout his youth, Fizzik's greatest joy came as he recreated tales of history for audiences. And while he was decent enough at acting the parts, he found greater value in the arts surrounding the theater: script writing, set and costume design, and directing. This was much to his parents' disgruntlement, unfortunately, as they (especially his father) felt that this pursuit was frivolous.
Proficiencies: Acrobatics, Performance, Disguise Kit, and Lute
Level 1: Artificer (Level 1)
Fizzik was trained by his father from a young age in the family business: artifact restoration. In his workshop, they examined ancient weapons, finely glazed pottery, and old books with brittle pages. As they worked, Fizzik learned about the spells and enchantments that wizards from eras past would place on them. And although he found the work a bit tedious, hearing the tales of history from his father as they worked sparked his imagination.
While Fizzik began his journey as an artificer, he eventually multiclasses so that he can pick up the Mage of Prismari subclass, which isn't offered to the artificer in this UA. In order to differentiate the types of magic learned between them, Fizzik specializes in different types of spells depending on his class. As an Artificier, these are Transmutation spells.
Starting Class Proficiencies: Arcana, History, Carpenter's Tools
Spells:
Cantrips: Mending, Prestidigitation
Leveled Spells: Catapult, Feather Fall
Level 2: Wizard (Level 1)
In his spare time, Fizzik would develop plays based on the stories he had heard about ancient heroes and the artifacts they wielded. He held his productions at a community center where the elderly dwarves would congregate after they retired. And while his productions were decent, he had dreams about making them grander.
One day while looking through some ancient histories, he came across a leather-bound tome, The Magiks of Theatre. Sneaking the book away into his private collection, he spent any free moment poring over its pages. He quickly mastered all sorts of new spells and began to implement them into his storytelling productions.
As mentioned before, in order to differentiate the types of magic learned between them, Fizzik specializes in different types of spells depending on his class. As a Wizard, these are Evocation and Illusion spells.
Spells:
Cantrips: Dancing Lights, Firebolt, Ray of Frost
Spellbook Spells: Burning Hands, Color Spray, Disguise Self, Silent Image, Thunderwave
Level 3: Artificer (Level 2)
Eventually, the fateful day came, as it had for many generations of his family: he was accepted to attend Strixhaven University. With one final, "Don't forget that Lorehold is in your blood," from his father, he was out of the house and feeling more free than he had ever been.
He loved most everything about this new experience; he even enjoyed the Basics of Archeology class his father had insisted on him taking, due to an exceptionally engaging Kor professor. But most of all, he loved discovering the countless mysteries held within the Biblioplex.
There, he uncovered some ancient texts from places of which he had never heard, such as the Undercity of Ravnica. He learned about some secret arts, in which various magic inks that could contain certain spells. These spells could then be cast by those on whom the ink was painted or tattooed (depending on the ink's properties), regardless of their own spellcasting abilities (or even lack thereof). He immediately saw how this could augment some ideas he had for some theater productions. After months of experimentation, he was able to replicate them via artificer infusions, a skill he had learned from his father.
Infusions:
Enhanced Arcane Focus
Replicate Magic Item - Masquerade Tattoo
Replicate Magic Item - Moodmark Paint
Replicate Magic Item - Spellwrought Tattoo, 1st Level
Spells:
Leveled Spells: Expeditious Retreat
Level 4: Wizard (Level 2)
Using his ink techniques and his knowledge from The Magiks of Theatre, Fizzik began to produce some plays starring his friends and other fellow first-year students. Word soon spread, eventually coming to the attention of Deans Uvilda and Nassari of Prismari.
After one especially rousing retelling of The Saga of Hafwyt the Curious, the two Deans approached Fizzik after the show. They congratulated the Dwarf for his retelling. Dean Uvilda commented on the brilliant use of his magic ink to create Illusory costumes, while Dean Nassari gushed over the various spells used to create lighting and sound effects. And together, they extended the invitation to join their college.
It was what Fizzik had dreamt of for a long time, as several of his friends he had made also belonged in Prismari. But he was hestitant to do so, kept back by his family's expectation for Lorehold.
One day, his famed Uncle Hofri came to give a guest lecture on artifact restoration for Fizzik's archeology class. Hofri managed to grab Fizzik as class ended, requesting they grab a bite to eat together to catch up. During that time, Hofri noticed something about his nephew. With a gentleness Fizzik didn't expect, Hofri gave him the space to open up about the Prismari offer. After a moment passed, Hofri said the following:
"You know, everyone's path to greatness is their own. If everyone trod the same path as everyone else, we would never have amazing stories to tell. Tell you what; I'll worry about uncovering history, and you be the best storyteller you can be so that everyone else can hear about it and discover it themselves."
That statement of support meant everything to Fizzik, and he accepted the offer from the Prismari Deans later that day.
Subclass: Mage of Prismari
Creative Skills: Two additional skill proficiencies
Athletics and Nature
Kinetic Artistry: You can dash as a bonus action. When you do, you can do one of the following: Boreal Sweep, Scorching Whirl, or Thunderlight Jaunt
Spells:
Spellbook Spells: Illusory Script, Magic Missile
Level 5: Wizard (Level 3)
Fizzik's knowledge of the theater grew leaps and bounds as a student in his new college. He began to adapt more intricate stories of legends past, and his productions moved to the large Prismari stages. Soon, crowds from Strixhaven and across Arcavios were in attendance of his shows. Even his uncle Hofri came periodically, especially if Fizzik had adapted a dwarven myth to the stage. But his parents never seemed to have the time to attend; there was always too much work to be done in the shops at home.
Spells:
Spellbook Spells: Blur, Continual Flame
Concept Art for Prismari Campus
After level five, I see Fizzik continuing to progress as a wizard, which has stronger ties to his time as a Prismari student. If I were to advance Fizzik in levels of Artificer, I would most likely pick Battle Smith as his class, with the Steel Defender being his primary stage hand for his many shows. I also see a time when he eventually reconciles with his family, especially since he has support from his uncle, the legendary Hofri Ghostforge.
Now, I will turn it over to you. If you were to play a character from Prismari College, what type of character would you build?
Next, we’ll be meeting a character from Silverquill.
Getting the word out: @flavoracle @kor-artificer @askkrenko @vorthosjay @wizardsmagic

AnS Characters as D&D Classes
Honestly this is kind of difficult because all the AnS characters are so beautifully complex and it's hard to fit them into one class, but I tried my best
Shirayuki - Cleric/Ranger
I think Shirayuki might be the most difficult to classify. When I think of her, the first word that comes to mind is healer. She's very focused on using her skills, knowledge and research to help people. In the AnS universe, she's not a fighter. Not physically, anyway, although the longer the manga goes on the more skilled she becomes with using words to cut and discover. But Shirayuki is primarily a healer, and the Cleric class is the closest I could get to that. In the D&D world, she might be more of a fighter and maybe(?) have a god she devotes herself to? (There aren't really any deities or religious systems in the AnS world that I know of).
This is the closest I could get, and maybe Shirayuki could multiclass into a Ranger or something, since she also has a strong connection to nature and could probably use that knowledge to survive out in the wild.
(Plus I just love the idea of Shirayuki with a bow. Very Yona-like.)
Zen - Paladin/Fighter
I feel like 3/5 of the Zen Squad will be either Paladins or Fighters, tbh. Zen, Kiki and Mitsuhide could all multiclass into one or the other. The lack of any deity or religion makes it difficult to classify the knight-figures as full Paladins, which is the closest I could think of to Zen's princely natures.
Fighters can easily be knights too, but they tend to focus more on the art of combat and physical prowess. Paladins have a stronger sense of justice, right and wrong, and a desire to uphold goodness, which I feel characterizes Zen very well. He's a prince, and his primary responsibility will always be to his kingdom. Zen has a strong sense of duty but also fairness and rightness, which is why I classed him primarily as a Paladin and not a Fighter.
I mean, "knight in shining armor" heLLO?
Obi - Rogue/Monk
HOOOOOOOO BOY. If you know me at all you know my obsession with the Obiyuki ship (I WILL GO DOWN TO HELL OR UP TO HEAVEN WITH THEM) and Obi as a character particularly.
Obi is obviously a Rogue. For so many reasons. I even rolled up an actual D&D character for a campaign based off of him. That's how much I love him. Obi in the D&D-verse would be amazing.
"A scoundrel who uses stealth and trickery to overcome obstacles and enemies" (DNDBeyond) if that doesn't SCREAM Obi, idk what does. Especially pre-Shirayuki Obi. Before he met the Zen Squad, Obi was the classic rogue. Master of a wide variety of skills, putting those skills to use in mostly illegal or at least illicit activities, prioritizing cunning over brute strength...yeah. I don't really need to go on.
After Obi joins the Squad and becomes an official knight, he's not really a stereotypical rogue anymore in that he has a family, a home, something to protect beyond his own self-interest. He becomes much nobler, more loyal, a true knight. He just happens to be a different sort of knight than most others, putting his skills and cunning to use in a different capacity.
I would also definitely multiclass Obi into Monk because of the martial arts. Obi has extraordinary control over his physical self and can use his body to devastating effect in several ways, which is very Monk-like (sword-flipping handstand AHEM). I debated making Monk primary, but I realized pretty quickly that Rogue fits Obi first way more. The biggest reason against putting Monk first is that Obi doesn't have much of a spiritual connection to his skills, nor did he come from a monastery/academy nor have traditional training. Definitely a Rogue first.
Mitsuhide and Kiki - Fighter/Paladin
Mitsuhide and Kiki's fighting styles are very similar, especially because of their occupation as Zen's aides and guards. "Well-rounded" specialists" is a good way to describe them. They are dedicated knights and skilled warriors for sure.
The only reason I wouldn't make them Paladin-Fighters like Zen is because they have different goals and duties. Their primary goals as Zen's knights is to protect him. They don't have the same responsibility of running a kingdom and navigating politics the way Zen does. Okay, maybe Kiki does somewhat as the heiress of Seiran, but still not in the same capacity as Zen. They have strong senses of justice, etc, but it's just not the same feeling as Zen. I think of Mitsuhide and Kiki as warriors first and diplomats/nobles second, which is why I'd make them Fighter-Paladins.
I'm not gonna go through the whole cast of characters of course, I mainly wanted to describe the Zen Squad. But I'll add a few more here:
Ryuu - Wizard
Ryuu is a NERD™. Yes he's a healer like Shirayuki, but he's always been more prone to scholarly pursuits, staying up until ungodly hours to research something highly specific. He also has a fantastic memory, and of course he's a pharmaceutical prodigy by age 12. The kid's a genius, and he would be very much at home in any library, researching plants, medicines, diseases and cures.
Ryuu is very much a Ravenclaw, and Wizard is the most Ravenclaw, nerdy class there is. Learning magic from books, scholarly knowledge of the arcane, that's what Ryuu would be doing.
I could multiclass him into either Cleric for the healing powers like Shirayuki, or Ranger for the nature connection and knowledge. I mostly see him as just a wizard though, probably specializing in compounds and minerals to create complex magical effects.
Izana - Paladin/Wizard
Our King Izana is hard to classify, man. He's such a complex character but we don't know all that much about how he thinks or works. He might be even harder for me to classify than Shirayuki.
I don't really see Izana fitting any of the D&D classes strongly. He's very much a skilled warrior for sure, like Zen, but he doesn't really fit the Paladin bill in the same way his younger brother does. He's much more mysterious. He's also very very smart, skilled in politics and diplomacy. He's good at manipulating people too and using any means necessary to protect what's close to him. Very much a Slytherin. There's not really any D&D class that deals with the political side of things a whole lot. Charisma and Intelligence yeah, but most of the classes are focused more on fighting style or something else like music/art (Bard).
If I had to choose, I'd probably go Paladin anyway, just because of Izana's relation to Zen and the Paladin's focus on Strength and Charisma. I'd make him an Int-heavy Paladin though, and multiclass him into Wizard because of the strong emphasis on Intelligence and Wisdom.
Izana's tricky man
Raji - Bard
This one's mostly just for fun
Solely because of his violin skills
Also Bards have a reputation for being horny af, and although I feel bad, I think of how he wanted to make Shirayuki his concubine at first just because of her beautiful hair
I know Raji has changed and I think he's a great character who obviously learned from his mistakes
But it's just funny
I love Raji and him being a stereotypical horny Bard who loves his friends is absolutely hilarious

heyyy, hope you’re having a good night!! if you have the energy and feel okay answering, what’s up w taz graduation? i haven’t checked it out yet but i was thinking ab it. just asking bc you’re the first person i saw talk ab the show having serious issues, but also feel free to not answer this!! hope you have a good week!
i took a nice hot bath, had a strawberry kiwi capri-sun, and did a nice face mask and i’m feeling pretty good - so, y’know what anon? let’s talk about it.
for anyone who likes taz grad who sees this post: it’ll be tagged with “taz grad hate” (although i feel hate is definitely a very strong word - it’s for the simplicity of tagging it) - so please block the tag if you don’t want to see this post (especially because i put a readmore on a post before and it didn’t show up on mobile and instead gave the full post). mobile tumblr has a tag blocking system, so please feel free to use it! i don’t mind haha
anyway, so this is... probably going to be a lost post, and i wanna go ahead and preface it: this absolutely isn’t any hate on the mcelroys themselves. i love the brothers and their dad a lot, and while i doubt any of them would ever see this (or have it sent to them, or shown to them, because im pretty sure they try to distance themselves from this sort of thing), i just want to make it clear that criticizing a product is different than bashing a person. which brings me to the point of if i do end up sounding as if im bashing someone - please call me out on it! it’s not my intention to target anyone.
with that said, let’s talk about this campaign.
so my problems are as thus: the railroading, the shipping (a fandom problem, but it’s present in the podcast), the NPCs, and some misc problems others have addressed better than i have.
which. i know. that’s basically the entire podcast. (i promise i’ll bring up some positive points to balance it all out). keep in mind i’ve only personally listened to... what, six episodes? and it was enough for me to drop it. some people dropped it first ep, some dropped it ep four, and others are still forcing themselves to listen.
the railroading
there was a time i could handle travis and his railroading [making sure the story goes exactly the way he has planned], because it was the very beginning of the podcast and that’s what you can kind of expect from a plot-heavy podcast. hell, i wouldn’t mind it if the interactions and goofs weren’t a huge part of why i listen to TAZ in particular (which, by the way, is why amnesty still stuck out to me - even if there was a direction griffin wanted to push them towards, the interactions between the players (or players and npcs) made up for any railroading). it’s kind of hard to not railroad a little when it’s story-heavy and you’re trying to built up a world that you’ve put a lot of thought into. however, a huge part of d&d is the spontaneity.
it’s kind of why i think balance was so popular. while there was railroading towards the end, there was the presence of improv that made it all good. most mcelroy content is enjoyed because of the goofs. the magic brian moment is memorable. the jenkin’s fight still stands out because it was funny (albeit a result of some bad rolls). the boys teasing angus sticks out because the four would play well off of each other. even without that - griffin had talked about how he had to roll with things (the fact he had planned for a fight atop the train, but ditched the idea for what his family members came up with instead). even in amnesty, a couple moments that stick out to me still are ned with the jetpack taking out a pizza hut sign, and the scene with the water where jake was trapped inside. they aren’t as fun, but they still stand out as “things i didnt expect to really end the way they did.”
with grad, it’s just. one after another. the thundermen want to subpoena a xorn? cool, let’s run with that until actually the xorn gets fed rocks and goes home and who cares about the subpoena now. fitzroy wants to keep his cloak? lets talk about it for a while and you also get no rolls to even try to keep it. fitzroy goes to meet higglemas in his office? oh, why are you here fitzroy? im going to keep asking you until you answer fitzroy? you arent getting out of this scene until you answer me, fitzroy, so just tell me why you’re here already, alright, fitzroy?
and even later in a episode i read a transcript of: hey argo, remember how you have this whole secret motivation? fuck you, im gonna talk about it here in your dream and reveal it to listeners and remove any tension you had building up, and you dont get a choice to talk about it because this all-knowing villain knows all about it :)
and even NOW in the latest episode, there’s a comment that “we should cap argo’s skills here” instead of just... making the checks higher. rogues are good at certain things and usually arent the best in battles. better hope argo never makes it to level 11, because who knows how people are gonna handle the fact that he gets a skill that’ll make it so certain skills can’t have a roll below 10 (reliable talent).
(griffin, thankfully, calls travis out for that, but still - travis, why would you even imply that, considering you should be aware of how rogues work considering magnus multiclassed into rogue and you played one on tiny heist?)
and in the newest episode, their Big Bad chaos (which, god, i personally hate that name) straight-out says “dont do this” to the thundermen. travis tries to say, on twitter, “a character saying “dont do this” is different than me saying it” but i need to point out that it’s one thing if you’ve said “no” in character but worked with the PCs doing otherwise, but the railroading says differently.
the shipping
ill try to make this quick, because it’s nothing to do with the fandom (ship however you want, man) - but i really feel the need to draw attention to this.
fitzroy, as confirmed by griffin in a ttazz episode, is asexual. not aroace, but ace nonetheless. and i find it... troublesome that the idea of rainer and fitzroy having a relationship is still pushed nonetheless, despite the fact that fitzroy (to my knowledge) was never once shown to reciprocate any feelings. not to be that person, but i really hope that grad doesnt have any sort of romantic relationships in it (at least - not between NPCs and PCs unless they’re actually like... warranted?).
i dont know, man. one of my closest friends is ace, and i know she wants a relationship, but i think it would reassure her a lot to see an ace character who isn’t pushed into one in case she ever changes her mind. someone once mentioned that they hope fi/tz/ra/in doesnt happen because theres relationships that have that “oh, you can just date” and it goes upwards there to “oh, you can have sex just to please them <3″ (which, to be honest, is kind of a gross mindset - if someone isnt interested, they arent interested).
also, uh, the TTAZZ where griffin states this, there’s kind of the mention tht the whole sexuality question was posed in relation to the episode “creative thinking” (the dream one i mentioned earlier) - which. uh. i don’t know if anyone caught this, but... rainer straight-up wrote fitzroy a letter in the dream like “are you going to accept my proposal? a girl doesn’t like to be left waiting” which. leaves me with some gross feelings because uh.
if... if the whole thing about fitzroys sexual orientation was addressed here, then why would you push your ship anyway? feels kinda iffy, man.
to which i want to say: fitzroy can date. he’s allowed to date. griffins allowed to do whatever he wants with his character. but when a lot of the flirting is met with nothing, i’m not gonna see the chemistry there. just because travis ships it doesn’t mean it’s canon.
the npcs
ah yes. lets talk about the npcs.
there’s... a lot. a lot a lot. i think travis trimmed down how many were present in a scene, but uh. there’s still a lot. and... uh... i kinda wish there wasn’t?
look, i know im going back to balance/amnesty, but just. hang in there for a moment. chill with me. vibe.
balance didnt have too many NPCs present at all times in each mini-arc. gerblins had some big names like barry, klarg, gundren, killian, yeemick, and magic brian. rockport limited had angus, jess, graham the juicy wizard jenkins, and all of the tom bodetts mentioned.
amnestys first arc had mama, barclay, jake, dani, pigeon, kirby, minerva, and that was about it for like. big names? and not all of them were present in each scene.
in the first episode of grad alone: gary, hernandez, jimson, rolandus, zana, rhodes, buckminster eden, rainer, leon, tomas, hieronymous, higglemas, stuart, jackle, bartholomeus, mulligan, groundsy, germaine/victoria/rattles (the skeleton crew). and those are the ones i wrote down (minus groundsy, who i just. ignores. idk him).
like holy shit, my english prof got onto me for having too many characters in my first chapter and i didnt even have half the amount listed there!
it’s just a huge cast. does this take place in a school? yes! theres bound to be a lot of students present - but you don’t have to name every single one of them, at least not in the first episode!
the miscellaneous
i don’t know if travis ever actually addressed it, but wheelchair users have actually like... said that rainer’s introduction bothered them, because she was like “please ask me abt my wheelchair :)” when travis saying she was in an ornate chair would have sufficed.
uh. the colonization vibes people have discussed within the centaur arc. mentioned here, the replies here, and this post (and its replies) here as well.
the overall lack of d&d when the campaign was kind of advertised as a return to d&d if i remember correctly
also no one seems to be taking literally any criticism at all which like. ignoring the petty shit, sure, but people have stopped donating to taz and their listener-ship must have dropped some during this entire time - you’d think that maybe someone could say “we need to find out why people dont like the thing and fix the thing” consider this is. yknow. their livelihood.
anyway uhhh
tl;dr: travis railroads way too much (even now), the shipping in-game has become pushy and gross (especially bc its shoving a relationship onto an asexual character), theres too many npcs that dont stand out well enough, and no ones taking any criticism about the major issues with grad.
#taz grad hate#taz graduation hate#Anonymous#ok im gonna go to sleep now goodnight#maybe ill wake up to hate tbh that'll be wild

Dungeon Blogging #2: Reputation of the Bard
For this one I asked my friends for a topic to cover and one of them had the wildly broad suggestion of the bard. Luckily there was a particular thing about this class that I’d been thinking about recently.
This post is going to be a little bit different from the last one. It won’t have build suggestions or character concepts, instead these are just my thoughts on the reputation of the bard and how that has changed.
While bards have always had a reputation, the idea of what a bard is has changed pretty dramatically in the past decade or two. When players think of bards in 2019 many of them conjure a mental image of a swashbuckling, silver-tongued agent of chaos who will seduce any NPC that the DM throws their way (for some reason this goes double for dragons). The strange thing is that not so long ago bards were the butt of the joke instead of the one telling it.
Consider this early page from the webcomic The Order of the Stick.
OotS is a pretty old webcomic and in its earlier arcs it carries a snapshot of how Dungeons and Dragons players viewed the game at the time. For a reference point, the first page of OotS is a gag about switching over from 3rd Edition to 3.5. In the comic Elan, the bard, is the comic relief character but unlike modern bards many of the early jokes focus on Elan being useless to the party at best and an active burden at worst. As the comic progresses, Elan’s comedy transitions into being largely focused on his genre savviness. He uses his bardic knowledge to manipulate narrative tropes to his advantage. There is a lot of fourth wall breaking in this comic, such as the bard ordering a dying NPC tell him their name. When they do they find themselves elevated named character status, providing themselves with some degree of plot armor and saving their life.
The bard on the right of the header is from a 2008 movie called “The Gamers: Dorkness Rising”, in it there is a scene in which the bard keeps dying and each time he dies his player produces one of his fifty backup characters, all of which are bards. These characters serve as canon fodder and enough of them pile up that the players take cover behind the massive pile of dead bards.
You can see a montage here.
Admittedly these both came out at a point in my life where I had yet to start playing Dungeons and Dragons (before I had many friends or the money to buy books, dice, etc.) but even then I would see jokes and memes everywhere online laughing at the bard’s expense.
While there were likely several factors that caused of this reputation, I suspect the power level of the class was a big one. As the designated “jack of all trades, master of none” the bard was weighed down by the baggage of being a 5th member class.
Although bards had a pretty expansive skill list, they didn’t get as many skill points as rogues, the fact that Intelligence was the bard’s 3rd or 4th most important stat meant that they often didn’t have much of a bonus (for those who haven’t played pre-skill proficiency, prior to 4th Edition you would have a number of skill points that you gained each level based on your class and Intelligence modifier). On top of that those skill points were stretched extra thin since their core mechanic demanded they allocate a very large amount of those points to the Perform skill. The result was a fairly lackluster option as the party’s skill monkey. As the primary caster they were also lacking. Bards didn’t have the full spellcasting progression of Clerics and Wizards, capping off with level 6 spells and very few spell slots at low levels.
So what changed?
While I wouldn’t go as far as to say 5th Edition was the only source of the bardic renaissance there are a few major differences that I think definitely helped the class. One of them was the promotion to being a full caster. The 5e bard can fully replace the cleric or druid as the primary support caster/healer. They can also replace the wizard as a utility/damage caster, while still maintaining a pretty good sense of identity as a class. This was huge since it meant that bards were now a good choice for a party of less than 5. Beyond that, many of the bard subclasses (College of Valor, College of Swords, College of Whispers) let them slip into the fighter and rogue slots as well. 5th Edition bards are kinda nuts, a jack of all trades, master of whatever they want to specialize in.
Compare the earlier depictions with JoCat’s video on the 5e bard.
Beyond the deliberate buffs that bards got in 5e, they also benefited from shifts in the way the ability scores were balanced. Dexterity and Charisma are the first and second best stats in the game but that’s not how it always was. Charisma in particular was often seen as the dumpstat. With the Finesse Weapon becoming a weapon property rather than a feat, building a Dex based melee character now takes minimal effort. That means your Dex factors into your melee attacks, melee damage, ranged attacks, ranged damage, AC, Initiative, and 3 skills including the always important Stealth. That’s on top of having one of the best, if not the best, saving throws in the game. Meanwhile Charisma is associated with 4 different skills that collectively make up about 80% of social encounters. Charisma is also the most common spellcasting ability with three full casters and one half caster running off of it. This makes it easier to multiclass to or from bard without splitting your focus in ability scores, further complimenting their “jack of all trades” branding.
Possibly the most profound change that redeemed the bard wasn’t even mechanical. As time has gone on what players value in Dungeons and Dragons has floated more towards role playing and social interactions. D&D evolved out of war games and in decades past that really showed. Dungeon crawls were once the focus of gameplay. In 4th Edition, D&D’s wargaming roots were in full swing with the battlemap being emphasized (your speed was measured in squares rather than feet) and the class features heavily focussing on combat. To say that 4e was controversial is to put it lightly and among its many criticisms was the belief that D&D had become too “video gamey” in an attempt to appeal to the MMO demographic. Reeling from player backlash, 5e made an attempt to be a more story driven game, something that was clearly a desire among players. The default rules of 5e even go so far as to assume theater of the mind-style campaigns. With the massive success of 5th Edition came the rise of a new genre of entertainment: actual play podcasts and D&D livestreams, the former of which was only possible due to the shift towards theater of the mind. If you’re reading this now I’m willing to bet that you’ve at least heard of The Adventure Zone or Critical Role. Shows like those did much to both bring Dungeons and Dragons to broader audiences and to demystify the game, which at the point most knew of while at the same time knowing almost nothing about. People realized for the first time that role playing games were a unique medium of narrative fiction! One that does storytelling in a wildly different way from books, film, or anything else. People cosplayed, drew fan art, and wrote fanfiction about this new breed of celebrity D&D characters. It was in this new environment that the bard thrived even without all of the mechanical buffs. People love this game for the stories that it can tell and those same people have grown to love the smooth talking storyteller that is the bard.
The response to my first Dungeon Blogging post was much more than I expected! Thank you.
If you have a question or idea for a future Dungeon Blogging post be sure to send me an ask! ^^

a land so wild and savage Character Detail Post
AKA: all the things I wanted to write in the notes of the fic but even I know when they’re too long. Eventually.
(This is just a little post containing the planned classes and reasoning for each of them. It’s not important but I figured 1. maybe someone would be interested and 2. it would be helpful to have this saved somewhere if I ever decide to do more in the verse (especially something where this stuff actually really matters).)
General Character Summary
formatted as (name, character level, class levels):
Hashirama- 17 (12 Forest Druid, 5 Life Cleric)
Tobirama- 16 (16 Transmutation Wizard)
Mito- 16 (either 16 Paladin or 12 Paladin, 4 Warlock)
Touka- 16 (12 Rogue, 4 Barbarian UPDATE: 10 Rogue, 6 fighter; I honestly have no idea why I wanted her to have barb levels when i wrote this. If I had a reason it obviously wasn’t very good because I’ve forgotten it.)
Madara- 16 (16 Warlock, Fiend Patron (maybe?), Pact of the Blade)
Izuna- 16 (16 Lore Bard)
*Race note: in the fic I don’t really mention it but the Senju are all definitely humans, Mito is (probably) a water genasi and both Uchiha are tieflings.
**I don’t specify some class details (like Mito’s Oath for example) because I really don’t know that much about d&d outside of learning through exposure to CritRole, so I’m not sure what the best selections would be in some cases.
Character Decision/Design Notes
-Hashirama- The easiest thing to decide was that Hashirama was going to be a Druid because, I mean, it’s Hashirama. I attached Life Cleric later on, just because it felt kind of right to do (and also I love healing and wizards Concern me. Plus, I think Hashirama, already down two brothers and raised in a society where that’s much, much less expected than it is for ninja, would also be Concerned.)
-Tobirama- Tobirama as a wizard was the second easiest. I sort of thought about him being a wisdom class at first (for the perception, which could be sort of an analog for sensing in this verse) but Druid didn’t feel right and neither did Cleric, really (though from what I know he would’ve been a Grave or Death one). But wizard felt right since Tobirama, as we know, is a Nerd as any good wizard should be.
(I still wanted him to have high wis though, because unperceptive Tobirama is just wrong, so I maxed int and wis and gave him 6 charisma as a trade off (the inverse justification for this is that Tobirama isn’t precisely bad with people, he’s just logical and tells people things they definitely don’t want to hear because he doesn’t really see why he shouldn’t, so his charisma checks very, very rarely work out.)
-Madara- Madara was the third easiest, tied with Touka. Based on the temper he’s portrayed with I briefly considered barbarian but it didn’t really feel right so instead, because of the whole deal with Kaguya, he’s a Warlock. I don’t have any dnd books (or any knowledge from outside CR) but I kind of wrote him as Pact of the Fiend with the mentioned use of Hurl Through Hell toward the end of the fic (ie. what Madara did to the goliath strangling Tobirama).
Does it feel wrong to have Madara be a charisma based class?
Yes.
Do I picture him somehow still managing to fail a truly astonishing amount of charisma checks in conversations anyway?
Yes.
-Touka- Touka was set to be a Monk for basically the entire process as, as far as I know, her characterization is completely fanon whereas Izuna at least has some canon base traits and we all just fill in holes. So she was set to be a fast af hard-hitter till I saw that Monk class effectiveness apparently feels bad in later levels? And, really, there was no way in hell I was going to design a party without a rogue in it. I considered ranger at some point but melee felt right for her and from what I’ve dug up fighter/rogue works Really Well (and her being a rogue lets her really take advantage of sneak attacks when Mito or one of the others are also engaging with an enemy) (+ they really needed a way to disarm traps and pick locks and without using Knock and announcing themselves and their intentions to the world.)
-Izuna- Izuna was tricky, mostly just because there’s just enough of him in canon to be problematic but not enough to be that helpful. Also I have a bias to the way I write Izuna, based a bit on other peoples’ Izuna and a bit on me just loving the idea of him being a charismatic, vaguely childish troll. I considered Paladin and Fighter for him (Fighter just because it’s kind of the least. telling class in my mind? I suppose. Paladin because Izuna is shown to be very dedicated, against the Senju until his last breath which...isn’t really applicable here, but could serve as a character basis anyway.) He was going to be a bard/rogue for a while but that’s apparently not a good multiclass and I liked rogue better on Touka anyway. (Plus not multiclassing gives Izuna the greatest access to his bard spells.) I like Izuna as the type who seems very light-hearted or even careless but has some very well hidden depths and catches on to much more than people think he does, so bard felt appropriate.
-Mito- Mito was the hardest, because there’s 1. so very little of her in canon and 2. not that much of her written in fanon either, so I didn’t really have a pre-established idea of her personality or what she would do like I did for Izuna or Touka.
Still, I figured—noble princess of a storied nation, bearing a great burden for her people? (Added to the fact that we always talk about the great vitality and constitution of the Uzumaki?) Sounds like a Paladin. (Also that means that the two best melee fighters in the party would be the ladies which is the best possible choice.)
She is the only one with an or in her class notes because I wanted her to still be the Kyuubi container in this verse, though in a different way. The or denotes my lack of decision on whether or not she can draw power away from the godlike being imprisoned in her stomach.

Now that is some terrible constitution. Bad physical stats all around. At least it’s easy to imagine what this character looks like: frail and sickly all the way! At least we have a couple of stats good enough to multi-class with, but who knows if that will come in handy. Let’s hope the race and class really shake things up.
Kenku
Rogue
It’s not a bad combination. Kenku almost assumes Rogue. It’s not great, but I can make something of it.
Dex 11

Always hard to make due with such terrible constitution, but everything else is okay. For a rogue, we would absolutely prefer higher dexterity for attack and defense, at least we can easily get enough to multiclass. Wisdom is our highest score, which we could use to become a Cleric. We don’t have the Strength to use heavy armor, though, at least not without losing a lot of speed, and with our health we want to be able to run away effectively. On the subject of running away effectively, we would have the right stats for Monk, but Monks tend to be in the fray, which we don’t want to be.
And then, there are Druids. I think I’ve pulled the Moon Druid card before, but it would not be a bad idea for a character with such terrible physical stats. Sneak Attack is finicky in 5e, so Wild Shape natural attacks won’t trigger it, and officially you don’t keep your weapon proficiency when you’re Wild Shaped so you can’t very well use that. Then again, you also don’t gain sneak attack from unarmed strikes if you’re a Monk. This is one of the rare cases where Pathfinder’s rules were so much more flexible. You could get a sneak attack for anything in Pathfinder.
I could go Knowledge Cleric and become the ultimate skill monkey with expertise for days and proficiency in anything I want. There are alternatives to focusing on combat. And I could get the Sanctuary spell to keep myself safe. Or I could be a Spore Druid and make up for my lack of HP with temporary Spore-based HP! But, as cool as that is, it’s not going to be enough to make up for how terrible our constitution is, so we’re still going to be squishy as anything. Yes, it probably does make more sense to live a humble life serving God than it does to charge out to war in our old age. On to the backstory:
Polyanne was born a thief. Most Kenku are. Most Kenku eventually grow out of it. They have enough, they know enough, they’ve been around enough, and they retire. They only live to be about 60 or so if they’re lucky, after all. But Polyanne was never satisfied. She wanted to go straight to the big question: how to end the curse that keeps the Kenku grounded? She wasted her life and vitality on this question, however she believes that she is getting close. Unfortunately for her, “getting close” means wandering far from the flock where she was safe. Now, Polyanne has to make friends with some outsiders in order to finally get what she most desires before she up and croaks.

After all, there’s not too much to it. The centerpiece of the build, you could say, is Sanctuary. Polly cannot take hits, so we need to keep her in Sanctuary, which means we need to give her many support abilities such as the Mastermind’s Help as a bonus action. Healing, buffing, and of course skill challenges are what this character is good for more so than trying to be a damage dealer. Some Rogues are running, hiding, and ambushing, while others are just about the running and hiding. Poly would rather fight from a distance if at all, and she is not every good at it. As a helper and a healer, though, Poly is great, and as a puzzle solver even better.
Happy Rolling!

I keep thinking about Desmond, our fave isekai protag, getting dropped into baldur’s gate 3. Only, per one of my favorite isekai tropes, as a no-name NPC. As one of the Sharess’s Caress escorts? As one of Astarion’s spawn?? Basically him just being Tired Of This Shit and trying to avoid the plot but of course that’s not going to work lol. I haven’t even decided if he would be a romantic interest for the MC or a companion or anyone, or what his class would be. But ugh his isekai potential too strong.
His isekai potential is too strong.
If we want Desmond tired of everything and just want to avoid the plot, I personally would put him somewhere safe-ish? Desmond is the type of person who wouldn’t turn a blind eye to atrocities if it smacked him on the forehead so the best way to ensure that he stays away from whatever plot is happening is by making him an NPC in a more or less stable area where he would feel like other more knowledgeable and experienced with all these ‘dungeons and dragons’ (they have magic, holy shit) got this. That would point us to someone in Baldur’s Gate before Act 3. This way, Desmond would have his peace and quiet until the party starts doing their thing and Desmond stop being able to turn a blind eye on everything and he’s ‘forced’ to assist this party of… well… interesting people
As for his class, well, you can go for the class I’m going for with my playthrough of BG3 as Desmond. I made him multiclass Rogue (Thief) and Ranger (Gloomstalker), with a little bit of Bard (College of Swords), specifically:
Rogue Lv 4 – Thief (because Thief’s skills are more all rounders than Assassin’s)
Ranger Lv 5 – Gloomstalker (more stealth options, Dread Ambusher is our Assassin skill lite and lv5 has extra attack XD)
Bard Lv 3 – College of Sword, more on the side of Desmond being good in being seen as ‘non threatening’ but his spell list is more on the side of support than actual damage.
If you want to keep him in one class only, making him a Thief (Assassin) would make the most sense with the hidden blade being more or less his one shot kill weapon, although in terms of gameplay that’s kinda like making him a “best in first round only” kind of deal. The multiclass above is the ‘compromise’ I made to have Desmond be more or less in line with his setup in Assassin’s Creed.
Of course, if you want to have fun and make Desmond suffer (affectionately), you can make him a Warlock with a pact with an unknown Great Old One. This would add a layer of mystery to who had ‘helped’ Desmond be pushed into Faerun and we can hint that the Great Old One is:
Isn’t actually a Great Old One but one of the gods but Desmond’s otherworldly-ness and his lack of ‘worshipping’ stopped him from being a Paladin or a Cleric and pushed him into Warlock territory
Is one of the Isus from his world that had escaped into Faerun (or somewhere close by) but, since that Isu is a deity from their world, the Isu is counted as one of the Great Old Ones (which sounds a lot like “Those Who Came Before”)
Desmond’s patron isn’t one entity but a legion, using some kind of system to support or affectionately bully him at times if and only if the legion reaches a majority vote. Desmond technically has multiple access to ‘Wish’ but it’s more of him asking help from the legion and hoping many of them would give him what he wants. … and, yes, I am basing the legion on the whole “Desmond’s patron is us” idea I have XD
Even if Desmond isn’t a magic class, I think he’d have a few scrolls with him, mostly support spells like Invisibility, Fly and even Enhance Leap (also Speak with Dead and Speak with Animal) with a few attack spells that he uses as distraction most of the time
Sidebar: I’m not sure if you mean Astarion’s spawn as in we’re setting this after BG3 with Astarion having ascended and making Desmond his spawn or if you meant Desmond is a fellow Cazador spawn, either way, we’ll have to find a way for Desmond to escape his sire’s thrall if that’s the case. The easiest would be Desmond getting a tadpole in his brain like Astarion but that does mean that… well… if his sire was Astarion, this will lead to Desmond wanting to kill Astarion because he sees being put in his thrall as something horrible as it makes him lose control over himself even if Astarion was to be… ‘kind’ to him. If it was Cazador though, then that means Desmond will want to kill Cazador (and maybe Astarion and the party helped him during the whole… Cazador ‘sidequest’) and that would be his reason for being unable to keep himself from the plot.
#desmond as an npc in faerun#another idea i had is#being one of the tiefling children in the grove#he’d totally try to keep the tieflings safe though#so there’s no way he’d stay out of the plot#other than the whole#“i’m joining the tieflings in their journey to keep them safe”#but that means he’d be part of the plot from act 1 onwards#also… i kinda like the idea#that he might not have selune’s blessing#but the cursed lands of act 2 can’t touch him for some reason#ask and answer#assassin's creed#desmond miles#teecup writes/has a plot#fic idea: assassin's creed#fic idea: baldur's gate 3#fic idea: crossover#baldur's gate 3#bg3

What is your opinion on FRIDA’s build? Or do you think there’s too many unknown factors to form an opinion?
It's a great build that works specifically because they're showing up at level 9 and, to my knowledge, leaving after a brief arc. Brennan Lee Mulligan did a very similar build on NADDPod for a guest character (Gunslinger 7/Assassin Rogue 3) which was as a result of the extra level and lack of a cleric dip min-maxed as hell, but it's the kind of build that works way better if you don't have to slog through the lower multiclass levels.
The cleric dip is absolutely not optimal, but gunslinger is, let's be real, broken enough to make up for it, it's a nice nod to the importance Deanna plays in their life, and the bit of extra healing plays into the protector idea. I think a lot of the time when I get questions, and certainly if I'm talking to my players or making choices for myself, I try to steer people away from signaling everything via a multiclass or major mechanics features and instead leaning into smaller things like spell choice, background, or just...open RP and personality; but if you're a guest player? You can ignore all of that. You don't need to worry about whether you can build on the foundation! Go wild!

Class Feature Friday: Alchemy Subdomain (Apocryphal Subdomain of Artifice or Magic)
So soon after Divine Anthology was released, we’ve got our very first apocryphal subdomain! These subdomains, as their name suggests, are part of divine lore that is not normally considered canon to the deities that grant it.
This could be for several reasons. The subdomain in question might derive from the teachings of a deity or faith and how it applies to a region or a group of people, who have their own needs, which might not align perfectly with the ordinary party line. In other cases, it might be an outright heretical interpretation of scripture, practiced by secretive sects rejected by the main church.
Typically, player characters have to spend a trait to gain an apocryphal subdomain, but just as NPCs can take them without the associated trait, I feel that with adequate backstory, PCs might be able to skip the trait as well.
Today also introduces us to the idea of subdomains associated with more than one core domain. Normally this happens mostly with subdomains associated with outsider species and the various alignment domains associated with them. Regardless, such subdomains always include full instructions on what abilities they replace in both domains.
Anyway, today we’re looking at the alchemy subdomain. Straddling the fence of applied science and magical force of will, it only makes sense that this is a subdomain of both artifice and magic. Though typically not full alchemists themselves unless they multiclass, divine casters who utilize the domain no doubt have many ranks in craft alchemy, and are quite skilled at creating more mundane alchemical creations.
I see this subdomain being popular in sects where alchemy is a popular option, of course, as well as faiths that use scientific or magical research as a way to feel closer to their deity. Certain gods of magic, particularly in settings where magic is thought of as in direct opposition to science, might view the union of the two as blasphemous, and vice versa.
A humble bottle of water can be quite potent indeed in the hands of one of these clerics or inquisitors, for they can imbue them with divine energy, essentially imbuing them with a spell in their daily arsenal so that it can be drunk as a potion or extract. However, such concoctions are temporary, fading over time. However, they do have the advantage of functioning as extracts for the purposes of certain domain spells this subdomain grants.
These new spells include storing various liquids, both helpful and harmful, in ones body to inject with a touch, amplifying the power of potions and elixers, and delaying the consumption of another extract for when it is most needed.
Interested in adding some potion-based strategy to your divine caster? This is certainly a way to go about it, doling out potion versions of your spells to allies to consume at their leisure, as well as gain some of the utility of those divine spells, clerics being able to inject poisons or even harmful spells with a touch, buff their potions and elixers, and of course set up contingency effects. I highly recommend this for the party healer, particularly if they are also acting as the potion bank of the party. Unfortunately, inquisitors lose out on the spells, so they are regulated to doling out potions to allies.
Keep in mind that even if they are not true alchemists, these mystics still likely practice mundane alchemy, so there’s no reason not to also stock up on various concoctions, and why they might also pack an alchemy kit of their own, and be very knowledgeable of alchemical lore, more so than the average layperson, anyway.
Alchemy is everywhere in the city of Bar Shannad, but they remain as expensive as ever. However, the church of The Great Maker do provide a useful service, creating ready-made, but temporary potions, at a discounted price, for the arena competitor who wants a little holy edge to their blade, or the courtier who desires a little more charm. However, they always warn that these potions are only useful on the day they are made.
Many consider the philosopher’s stone to be the pinnacle of alchemical mastery. For some, this is a religious journey, with its own priests and churches. Those who lack the talent for alchemy, but have the passion to pursue it often become clerics devoted to it, while others become inquisitors, zealously hunting for any sort of information on the stone.
Feeling lost without their water naga goddess, now deceased, the nagaji of the isolated community of Jikaiss have turned to alchemy and religion for a solution. Without the means to resurrect her, some have tried to find a way to turn one of their own into a true naga to replace her, with the blessing of the gods, alchemy, or both.

Being a Monk in D&D Online
It’s my tumblr and I’ll wank about DDO if I want :-P
For those who don’t know me that well, (which to be honest is all but a very, very small number of you), I play D&D Online. I have since DDO introduced the Monk class. I enjoy it a lot, and have found a small group of people, whom I have never met that I run around with. (On the Khyber, if you actually care.)
My play style is a bit odd, for many reasons, (a few call me an evolutionary dead end because I rarely reincarnate), one of which is that I only play one class: The Monk.
Not what you’d expect
The monk is an odd class, in that it’s as much of a “mile wide and an inch deep” class as the bard or the artificer. I can do a lot of damage, but on a per hit basis, a lot of class builds do more. I just hit really, really fast. Many people, most in fact, do what’s called “splashing”. They’ll take a small number of monk levels, to gain some basic abilities like evasion (which means that if someone takes a swing and they hit, but you make your reflex save, you take no damage. That’s kind of handy until it fails. Then you take it in the shorts. Hard.)
But it’s not a class that’s really good at one thing like tanking or dps (damage per second) or healing or crowd control. It is however a great support class, and I like that part. I like being a part of a team, and using my knowledge of the class and its features to be a bit of a healer or a dps, (nothing like Togwik. I can kill some stuff, but that dude just scythes through things), or occasionally, pretending to be a tank.
Which means that you can’t just sort of play a monk. You really have to be all in to do well. Multiclassing rarely works out well. It’s useful if you’re just going for completionist (wherein you max out your level in every class to get a +2 bonus to all ability and skill scores), but if you really want to play a monk, you have to go all in. All 20 heroic levels as a monk, and then your 10 epic levels done in a way that makes your monkness work for you. As I said, I’m a generalist. Specifically, a melee generalist with some effort put into healing and electrical damage. There’s other ways to play a monk. One I’ve been seeing more of is what is called a “shuricannon” or a monk that specializes in doing insane amounts of damage with shuriken.
For those of you amused by “shuricannon”, some of the other more amusing portmaneaus:
cleric/monk — “clonk”
ranger/monk — “monkcher”
fighter/monk — “fonk”
Let’s take a look at my basic stats on my current incarnation, a 30th level monk running in the Grandmaster of Flowers (GMoF — warning, DDO LOVES ACRONYMS) epic destiny (ED). But first, a pic of the character, (Bynkii. Which was actually where that name comes from. It’s what I’ve always named my D&D characters. This should be surprising to precisely no one.)
Let’s take a look at my basic stats on my current incarnation, a 28th level monk running in the Grandmaster of Flowers (GMoF — warning, DDO LOVES ACRONYMS) epic destiny (ED). But first, a pic of the character, (Bynkii. Which was actually where that name comes from. It’s what I’ve always named my D&D characters. This should be surprising to precisely no one.)
Aasimar Scourge Monk with the requisite pink mohawk and glowing eyes
I just like the idea of glowing eyes on a monk. So now for the stats:
clearly a wisdom build
So now, as a monk, Wisdom (WIS) is his most important stat. It fuels all his good tricks and is why the save against his stunning fist attack (aka DC) is a 101. Which when you’re operating on a 100-pt scale means that doesn’t miss often. It’s handy, it’s rather hard to fight back when you’re stunned. Hit points aren’t bad for a monk, I’ve had higher, but this build I added some Constitution Bonuses, along some careful gear selection which adds 85 to the hit point total. Given I how I play a monk, that’s a pretty high hit point count. I’ve also got a really good Armor Class for a monk. Not where it would be with high-end heavy armor and Paladin/FIghter/etc. bonuses, but given his armor is cloth, pretty good. If I change my stance to earth stance, then it goes to 230. But that also kills my wisdom, so I rarely do that.
The other important stat I have going is Constitution (CON). First, because it affects how many hit points I have (out of 1347 perm HP, 840 are my Con bonus), and secondly because it affects my Concentration, and that directly affects my Ki levels (yellow bar):
the blue bar is my magic points/mana, which I clearly don’t care about.
Ki is important to a monk because that’s what powers all the good monk attacks. Stunning Fist is 15, Tomb of Jade/Dismissing Strike/Kukan-Do are 25 each, Lily Petal is 10, and the creme de la creme of Monk attacks, Everything is Nothing, (EIN) is 50. EIN I alternately call the room cleaner or the Blue Light Special (when it goes off, the entire screen goes blue:
attention K-Mart shoppers: buh-bye
On an EIN one of two things happens to everything in range: they die, instantly, or they’re frozen for 6 seconds and then they take 500–1500 points of damage. It’s kind of handy when fighting large amounts of mobs. One of the folks I adventure with just sighs and tells me I’m cheating when I pop it off. I can live with that.
The thing is, a monk is a good team class. I can solo, although at higher levels, it gets tedious. Where I really do best is in a good party, where I can work the edges while the hardcore tanks and DPS folks wade in the middle. I also do well in the middle in specific ways. I can easily paralyze or temporarily take out a lot of enemies in small groups for a few seconds. That makes a difference. And I like that part. I really do like that DDO encourages team play, not PVP. In fact, there’s almost no PVP, and that fundamentally changes the game itself. From something my son wrote on that a while ago:
What I like about DDO is that a lack of serious PVP removes the requirement that all classes be individually competent. Take the Bard for instance. The Bard is kind of crap at everything. Fighting, sneaking, casting, healing, the Bard phones in on all of it. The only reason this class exists is for support. A Bard can make other characters two or three times stronger with an array of support skills, spells, and abilities no other class can come close to matching. A DDO Bard would never appear in WOW, since it would be a liability in team PVP, worthless in solo PVP, and simply unnecessary in a PVE raid.
Meanwhile in DDO, a bard is a glass cannon that can’t attack or take a hit and every raid group jumps at the chance to have one on the team. A Bard can’t do dick on its own and everyone is A-Okay with that since the point is to take the individual skills of each player and work as a group to overcome obstacles.
And that leads me to my final point (I have more really, but I’m getting tired of typing). A lack of PVP means that the point of the game isn’t to be competitive with each other, the point is to work with one another. When nobody can play on their own and the only way to win is to play nice with one another, that creates incentive to NOT BE A DICK. DDO has a remarkably low population of assholes the likes of which have forever tainted the reputations of WOW and Everquest since those people are remarkably shit at working nice with others (funny that). If you’re forming a group and some prepubescent hellspawn from the barren wastelands of Xbox Live gets into your party, the thought isn’t “He’s a good player, so it doesn’t matter if he’s an asshole”, the thought is “He’s an asshole, so it doesn’t matter if he’s a good player”. It makes grouping with random people less of a cringeworthy event when there’s no reason to put up with a social reject just to get your rare loot.
For a long time, I wouldn’t do pickup groups (PUGS) in DDO, because I’d seen what random people were like in WOW and other places, and I had neither time nor interest in that. But eventually, I gave it a try, and found that for the most part, actually, in almost every case, the people I randomly group with are all…well, okay. It’s not even unusual to have women playing as women, using voice chat, and I can say that in the years I’ve been playing DDO, I’ve never once heard “Tits or GTFO” or similar.
I’m not saying that kind of idiocy never happens, I’m just saying I’ve never encountered it, at least not on Khyber. DDO is inherently cooperative. Get a rep as a cockmonkey and you find yourself very alone, and unable to do a lot of the cooler runs. It also helps that Turbine doesn’t play. They have a rep for being rather banhappy, and I’m fine with that. It means that a lot of the problems with other players that you see in other MMOs don’t exist in nearly the same quantity on DDO.
So that’s a bit on my character. No, there was no point, I just felt like doing this. Oh, and my guild? Bored of the Rings. Because of course.
