#i keep a list of prompts in my docs in case i need inspiration

Talk Shop Tuesday - you've mentioned that one good way of getting a multichap done is to write it all in one document, but is there any other ways you manage to motivate yourself? Also how on Earth do you keep your WIP list so low - what do you do if you're attacked by wild plot bunnies??
For my larger AUs, I have a snippets doc for each! My mind tends to jump around between arcs...especially to the s3 arc of the Morgan AU. So when I get inspired to write the later parts of an AU, I usually do so and stick it in the snippets doc. That way my current inspiration is fulfilled, and I have it saved for later when I might need it (and if not, there's always the outtakes doc)
A more general form of motivation is the prompt fills. Writing shorter ficlets is a fairly low-pressure way for me to write and keep my writing juices flowing. And, as a bonus, I get to write for multiples ships (romantic and platonic) that I find compelling but likely wouldn't write about otherwise (and I get to write more about the ones that I have written about but still love so much—like Barry & Morgan, one of my brotps 🥰)
Also also, an outline helps too ofc. When it comes to long fics, having an outline is great because if I get stuck, I can go back to it and go "okay, this is what I need to happen. How can I get myself there?" And there's always the trick of deleting the past sentence (or few sentences) to unstick myself.
Watching the source material is kind of an obvious one 😅 but yeah, that too.
Also taking breaks, knowing when to step away from writing, reading other things (that may or may not inspire me but provide a good distraction for my brain in any case)...all of that is important too! Avoiding burnout is key.
As for the latter part of your question...hey, I get attacked by plenty of plot bunnies, thank you very much 😂 this fic is a prime example of that (a prompt fill from yesterday that spiraled into an ambitious idea and ended up as a 1k-word fic, my longest fill to date), and so are any oneshots I've written on a whim (like the the Saviris fic, and the Savitar-centric s9 finale fix-it fic, to name another couple). I have so many ideas swimming around in my head...the reason I don't have a lot of WIPs is because of how I define them: ideas that have been plotted in a doc and written in fic form, even just a little. Mostly because I don't like making promises I can't keep...a number of the plot bunnies in my head will never be written, and yet I do think about them (also sometimes plot bunnies come and go like a revolving door, ideas are a dime a dozen).
Some of them end up as oneshots because although I can't outline them as a long fic, I want to write something for them. It's also why I prefer a series of oneshots over a multichap: former is less pressure, if that makes sense— go into it knowing there's a possibility that any oneshot could be the last one ever posted, while for multichaps...there's a bit more of an expectation of completion. Or maybe I'm overthinking it 😅 and that approach definitely makes it easier to skip around in time…which is useful if you wanna start in one place and fill in the earlier stuff later (as I did with the Morgan AU!)

5, 17, and 43 for the fic ask game!
[For the Fanfiction Writing Ask Game]
Three questions??? You spoil me! <3 I think I'll need a Read More for this one my friend xD
Hahaha! Ha! Ha.
Many. So, so many.
I have a bad habit of starting projects and not finishing them, so I have a plethora scattered throughout my Google Docs files that are anywhere from multiple pages of unposted fic, all the way down to single-sentence unused prompts. Sometimes I left them behind because I lost motivation, sometimes my hyperfixation shifted and I (sadly) couldn't focus on that fandom anymore.
But let's see...uh....I glanced through my older stuff first just to see. But for now I think I'm just gonna count what I'm either actively working on, or what I wish to continue when my motivation returns...because if you counted all the abandoned WIP's I've gathered over the years, I think the number would be close to 30, and I don't want to list them all up here. (Maybe I'll drop it at the bottom of this post if you're curious***)
For one, I have two IronDad fics I plan on finishing: one that's a shorter Mafia AU that's 2/3 complete, and a much longer (and heftier) multi-chapter fic that has been awaiting a new chapter for over a year I think. A Little Late On The Blood Work my beloved...I'll come back when I get inspiration again 🥺💞 I also have an old Jacksepticeye Egos fic called #SamLives that I've been wanting to continue for ages but haven't, along with a Night at the Museum fic (Jedtavius) that I at least need to finish the current arc for because the comment section is sad.
And MOST recently I've got a bunch for Hermitcraft/Empires/Traffic Life that I'm in the process of actively writing...which I believe add up to a total of six?? I think? THREE are partially posted/being updated (Through a Crack in the Void, Domino Effect, There's Not a Word Yet), and the OTHER three (two Team Rancher, one that's literally Every Ship Under The Sun With Some Found Family On Top) aren't gonna be on my plate until I finish some of the other ones.
17. Do you have a writing routine?
Not really! Usually once I get an idea, I just - jump in. If I get stuck and want to skip something just to keep the writing ball rolling, I'll throw one of these in the middle of the page: ASDJNAKFBEKAJBA ...and just leave it for later. It's bold, red, and easy to spot when I'm scrolling through a long document, which is nice! It helps make sure no blank spots get missed in editing! (I also red-dye words, sentences, or paragraphs I'm feeling shaky on, so I can spot them easily and come back later when I get a better idea to fix it.) And if I decide to completely change a section I'm writing, I'll often copy the original version, paste it at the bottom of the doc in case I decide to change it back, and turn it a pastel color so I don't confuse old versions for the current text.
I also sometimes make calendars on Excel/Sheets if I really wanna keep track of time, and I often have a separate (and somewhat disorganized) doc for Notes on my longer fics. There's also a document where I write down potential lyrics options for There's Not a Word Yet chapter titles, but that's the only time I've done that for a fic.
43. Is there a trope or idea that you’d really like to write but haven’t yet?
I feel like someone asked me this a while back, so I've definitely thought about this! But honestly? A mystery or a time-travel fix-it...which I am well aware are two VASTLY different tropes lmao.
I've always been envious and in awe of well-written mystery/detective stories, because so many little details go into them to make them work. I'd love to build one of my own someday, but I have yet to find the right motivation to do so.
As far as time-travel fix-its go...they're just...they're so fun to read, because I love to see how one little change can affect an entire timeline (see also: Domino Effect) but they're also a LOT of work to write because it involved basically retelling a story that's already been written but in your own words and with a twist. Somehow writing something fully original comes easier to me than trying to build my writing around something else that already exists. But god I'd love to have the motivation to write one of 'em anyway! It'd be fun to decide how everything changes all because of one little difference in choice :3
5. How many WIPs do you have?  What fandoms/pairings are they for?
Hahaha! Ha! Ha.
Many. So, so many.
I have a bad habit of starting projects and not finishing them, so I have a plethora scattered throughout my Google Docs files that are anywhere from multiple pages of unposted fic, all the way down to single-sentence unused prompts. Sometimes I left them behind because I lost motivation, though most times my hyperfixation shifted and I (sadly) couldn't focus on that fandom anymore.
But let's see...uh....I glanced through my older stuff first just to check for this hah. But for now I think I'm just gonna count what I'm either actively working on, or what I wish to continue when my motivation returns...because if you counted all the abandoned WIP's I've gathered over the years, I think the number would be close to 30, and I don't want to list them all up here. (But I'll drop it at the bottom of this post if you're curious***)
For one, I have two Marvel/IronDad fics I plan on finishing: one that's a shorter Mafia AU that's 2/3 complete, and a much longer (and heftier) multi-chapter fic that has been awaiting a new chapter for over a year I think.

(One of them is a cute 5+1 one-shot about Tango calling Jimmy "buddy" and Jimmy learning that "buddy" has a lot of different meanings depending on how Tango says it and who he's saying it to. The second one is an extension of a one-shot I already posted called Coming, Coming Home, where S8 HASA!Tango crash-lands in the mesa outside Tumble Town, and like - yeah. Yeah. I'd love to continue that one. And the LAST one is a Double-Life-based Witches/Familiars AU that started as Renchanting Duo and has since extended to every member of the Life series and even some Hermits.)
***ALL THE OLDER FICS I HAVE YET TO COMPLETE: I've got one for Doctor Who, a handful for JSE Egos - #SamLives - one for Night at the Museum, one for Encanto. Six for Marvel/IronDad (including a Mafia fic, a SPN AU, a Peter-gets-shot and Tony-goes-dad-mode hurt/comfort, and A Little Late On the Blood Work which as I said I'm just longing to get inspiration to return to). A witch/familiar Supernatural AU fic and an SPN time travel fix-it that I barely started. There's a TangoTek one-shot I've abandoned featuring his rage moments from both LL and DL. I also have an old fic from high school for a game called Ib that I'd love to revamp someday...and my Original FanFic that started it all, which was for Harry Potter, and I was like 12, and it will never EVER see the light of day. My god. It's...it's rough.

If you don't mind, can i ask for a cute fluffy Meikai x reader?
(a/n: u know what...... yes, you can. because i need something cute every once in a while to pacify my soul.)
: - : - : - : - : - : - :
—home;
Tumblr media Tumblr media
prompt: ❝ you don't get enough sleep. ❞ in which meikai falls for a human living in a waterside home with a fascination of the stars. | au
It’s quiet, he can faintly hear the sound of waves from his beloved sea rippling against the docks from outside  — it’s comforting and he feels at ease. The place has become almost a second home for him. After returning from the kitchen area, he passes the second mug over to the astronomer. He knows you aren’t much of a caffeine drinker, and he isn’t trying to rouse you anyway, despite the hour.
The sunrise from outside the window paints an orange, lightly pink glow on your features. Meikai sits on the royal-colored chair adjacent to the writing table. The galileoscope leans against the edge of it, light glinting off of the glass. He’d left his cape and hat on the coat hanger near the entrance door.
A sip of the sweet-tasting, foaming drink leaves pleasant warmth lingering inside your body, and his as well.
"This hot chocolate is so good... I'd marry you if I could just wake up to you making it with your amazing wizarding prowess for me... erry’ dayyy..."
You drawl out the last word as you yawn almost on cue, confirming his worries he’d been thinking of before when he saw you hunched over the desk, using your arms as makeshift pillow to lay your head on.
And Meikai takes note, "You've kept up this habit of yours, all this time."
"Hmmm? Which one?"
"You don't get enough sleep."
"Hows'so?"
"You're always drowsy, and you have this half-lidded gaze as if you're barely able to stay awake," he smiles, "I'd make it for you again if you had a good night's rest, or rather, good early dawn’s rest right now."
"Well... I can't sleep because I'm always waiting for you to come back," you return the smile sheepishly, “And, you know... the stars are normally brightest after midnight...”
Evidently. Your leather journal (quite old, from the yellowing pages and the cracked binding) was left open, names of all the constellations, asteroids, far-away planets written down and drawn in graphs. All of the ones you discovered by yourself and the ones he introduced when he took you stargazing in the Star Isle located to east in the Great Sea. On the open page, illustration of the constellation Orion with scribbled notes from top to bottom (’old as time?’ ‘named after divine entity. were they a real person or being?’)
“I got three solid hours of shuteye... not consecutively, but still, it’s fine.”
"There would be nothing on my conscience if i was able to somehow reverse that effect on you. For the sake of your well-being."
“I’m alright, but thank you anyway...”
The sorcerer says softly, “I insist.”
It doesn’t take much for you to relent; perhaps you know how aware he is of your own mortality, as a result, his attention to your condition manifests in ways only he knows how to show.
“Ah, well... if, you so insist, then I guess...”
You remove yourself from the chair to sit on the mattress, then gracelessly fall with your head down onto the pillows with a ‘flop’ and a groan. Meikai puts his hot drink aside on the woven table mat.
“Maybe one day you’ll get to meet the one who made all these stars.” the sorcerer mentions, glancing at the journal again. You have a curious, beautiful soul.
“So many of them are faraway planets...” you yawn again, “I wonder who lives on them?”
“I wonder so too... there’s a vast universe out there we haven’t yet met.”
He inches closer so he can raise the duvet up to your shoulders, the soft fabric engulfing your frame.
Worriedly, you ask, “Are you leaving?”
“Not yet. I only just arrived.” he replies.
You poke your hand out beneath the comforter, reaching out with fingers. He takes notice, and holds onto your hand in return — your fingertips are always cold, compared to the rest of the body heat you normally excluded.
“Can we go to the Isle again when I wake up? It’s my favorite place.”
“I know, and of course.”
“And... since you played the piano for me last time, I’ll play violin for you.”
You keep the grand piano in your house as bequest from your late relatives. It looked lonely in the parlor collecting dust (”in human culture, having a piano in your home shows off aristocracy and sophistication. You don’t even need to know how to play. And, I prefer the violin anyway.”), and so he offered to play for you.
He sits by the bedside and waits - which does not take long, no matter how you tried to hide how fatigued you actually were - until your grip on his hand becomes progressively feeble, as you eventually fall into slumber and (hopefully) good dreams overtake your mind, quiet breaths become slower and shallow.
He retracts his hand slowly, rummages around in the pockets of his blazer and grabs the item nestled there.
(‘I'd marry you if i could just wake up to you making it with your amazing wizarding prowess for me...’)
It’s a good thing he won the inner debate on bringing it with him earlier, then.
He wonders what kind of wedding would you prefer. If he granted you ability to breathe underwater to have a big ceremony with everyone in the sea kingdom invited. So its denizens could meet the mysterious creature on land who managed to capture his affections. Would you wear something closely sea-themed, azure or teal fabric with clam ornaments, or would you prefer to stick with your customs of wearing pure, elegant white.
The thoughts linger, he carefully slips the lapis lazuli embedded onto band of silver on your ring finger, as it glistens under rays of early sunlight.
You had all the time in the world to figure it out.
He just didn’t know how long things would stay peaceful in the sea until then.

Sparktober Bingo 2021!
Back for a new generation: Sparktober Bingo!
Instead of coming up with an Atlantis-specific list of prompts, I compiled a bunch of 2021 -tober prompt lists into one google doc here. (Links to original prompt lists are on the google doc.) Add in a list of Atlantis episodes and...
Tumblr media
How to play:
Choose a “flavor” from the prompt sets below the cut, then paste it into this fandom bingo card generator.
Adjust your browser size til it looks right and take a screenshot, or use the html script if you’re familiar with using html on tumblr. Tag @sparktober if you want us to reblog it so everyone knows you’re playing!
  Sparktober Bingo Rules:
Complete a row/column, corners, or a blackout of your card by November 1, or not! Update as you go.
All fan-works are allowed: art, edits, fic, meta... bonus points to anyone who picks the “sprinkles” flavor and goes full mid-aughts by filling their bingo cards with 100x100 pixel icons.
You are allowed to pull multiple cards until you get one that inspires you, and you can also go through the prompt list of your choice in advance to pull out squicks or things you absolutely won’t write. I recommend not googling unfamiliar words from your work computer.
Use the prompts liberally! Episode titles can be treated as the episode or as generic prompts (e.g. “Epiphany” can be for an episode-related fic or a prompt for an epiphany of your choice).
  Flavor descriptions:
VANILLA: Gen prompt lists from Fictober, Inktober, Trektober Gen, and Trektober Trek.
CHOCOLATE: Zesty prompt lists from Trektober NSFW, Kinktober, and Whumptober. The multiple-prompts-per-day from Kinktober and Whumptober have been broken into individual prompts.
CANDY CORN: Fall / holiday themed prompts from TUA-tober.
SPRINKLES: Atlantis episode list (in order, in case you only want to copy certain seasons), along with characters and a few Atlantis-specific prompts.
TWIST: All of the above! (You can also manually mix and match different flavors, of course.)
Text blocks to copy into the bingo card generator are below the cut. Enjoy!!

The Heartbeat of Inspiration
Summary: Musicians find magic within the simplest sounds, especially when it’s laced with love
Word Count: just shy of 1.5k
Warnings: silly and sweet with some fluff and a slight dip into cheeky fucker
Author Notes: I had been lamenting earlier Saturday that I wanted to write, opened a few things I have going (which I HATE having multiple things started let alone started and just hanging) none sparked joy at the moment, prompts I’m sitting on were doing the same. Was about to close down for the night when Bre @fallinallincurls decided to blog THIS and then all of a sudden, a word doc was opened and I vomited 250 words in like 10 minutes. I had about 1k done in an hour, then it took a turn. All in all, 2 hours to bang out this whole thing start to finish. CRAZY. Miss muse, she has a mind of her own.
This falls earlier in the verse than I’ve been writing lately, like somewhere between Sharing a Look and Because I Need You. Totally can be a stand-alone but as always, verse knowledge helps. Full masterlist can be found here.
Tumblr media
“Can I play you something?” he asks earnestly, guitar slung on his back as he reaches for your hand.
“Of course, always. But why not here?” you question as he pulls you through the maze of people, cases and wires, down a random hallway you don’t remember seeing before. He peeks around the corner and ducks you both into a dimly lit room.
“Because,” he smiles, swinging his guitar around before hopping up on the counter in the small space he’s found.
“Because is so not an answer my dear. What are you up to Shawn?” you knit your eyebrows as you pop down cross legged on the floor across from him.
“When you were on that call before, after sound check? I didn’t want to sit or anything. Too much rolling through me,” he explains strumming lightly. “I felt something bubbling. I needed to play and write and just be you know? Bus wouldn’t do it or my room cause everyone would be popping in and out. I went to wander, it got quieter. Found this. Not sure why we’re not using it considering everyone’s on top of each other in this place.”
“I thought you went to nap, I know the bus and all the extra stuff hasn’t been the best for you for sleep,” you start before he jumps back in.
“Nope. Was in here. Remember that progression that’s been eating at me? The one I made you record on your phone the other morning?” he plays it, and eases into it further, looping back to the original. “Music’s done. Or I think it is.”
He goes head down, focusing solely on the guitar and the sounds coming from it. You love all facets of this man of yours, but seeing him in his element, creating, in love with the music. The way you get to see him, the way he allows you to see him this way; it’s nothing short of special. Towards the end he’s bopping his head along as he strums, smile creeping across his lips.
“And so yeah, it’s that,” he shrugs, bashful and flushing all of a sudden.
“Can you play it for me again?” you request. “Please?”
He turns a few shades pinker, deeper. “Really?”
You nod, looking him straight in the eye, lips quirking up on one side.
He slides back into music mode, this time a little surer of the chords and the strings underneath his fingers. He looks up at you more this go, cheeky little grin as he progresses. Head bops a little more towards the end of this go, the newness still there but something with it settling underneath his skin and into his bones.
“I think I’ve got the start of lyrics too,” he mumbles, fingers drumming against the front of the light washed wood. “If all goes well, wanna get this down, mixed. Done. Drop it when we get back from all this. A surprise, a thank you, an end note to this bit of running if you will.”
“What brought this all on all of a sudden? What’s the inspiration?” you question, head tilting to the side just enjoying the scene folding out in front of you. He’s always pretty in your eyes, but when he gets deep into his music, he’s ethereal with a whole other glow.
“You,” he says so matter of factly, not looking up from his fingers fidgeting across the frets now. “The other night, when you finally got in, and you slid into my arms. Something just popped, clicked. It was this feeling of calm and serenity, that nothing else mattered but that single moment with you. I heard the progression in your heartbeat, as fucking cheesy as it sounds, but I did. It hit, stuck in my head even when we slept. Felt it again, stronger and more sure really, when I woke up with you sleeping on me. Why I made you record me playing it first thing that morning. I couldn’t let it go, I needed to keep it.”
“I had to go and fall in love with a poetic as shit songwriter,” you sniff, shifting to your feet to get to him.
He hopped down off the counter, slinging his guitar behind him to get you into his arms.
“I warned you that this whole muse thing for a musician was real,” he laughs brightly, holding you tightly to him. “You’re a pretty damn good one at that. Thank you, baby.”
You nuzzle your face against the soft cotton of his t-shirt, wrapping your arms about his waist being careful of the guitar behind him and just hold him so for a few minutes.
“Love you pretty girl,” he whispers, nudging your face up to look at his. “So damn much.”
He leans down, dusting the softest kisses across your face, hitting your eyelids, cheeks, the tip of your nose before carefully pressing into your lips. You’re lost in the moment, in him, in the bubble. Then your phone starts buzzing wildly in your pocket, Shawn’s following suit.
“Shawn,” you utter against his lips, pulling away ever slightly.
“They can wait,” he mutters against your jaw, sliding his hands into the back pockets of your jeans to bring you closer into him. “Wanna love on you a bit before I have to go into show mode. I’ve missed you, missed being this close. You feel good under my hands, the taste of you on my lips.”
He hits this spot on your neck that makes you let go something between a moan and a sigh. “The part of me that loves you so much wants to say to hell with them all, but the rational part of me that knows if they’re hitting both of our phones…”
Shawn doubles down, nose skirting against your skin with his tongue following. “Couple more minutes, please?”
“Baby, sweetheart,” you fight out as he nips at your ear while slipping his thigh between your legs. “You’re not fighting fair. You’ve got folks to see, fans to make swoon, songs to sing.”
“I’m seeing you; I’m making you swoon, I can sing to you,” he utters into your ear, hips canting against yours. “You’re my favorite audience.”
“What’s gotten into you…” you begin just as a familiar face busts into the room.
“There you are. Kids, really?” Cez barks through a deep laugh. “Enough of that. You two are damn lucky it’s me that found you and not say Andrew or even Louis, who by the way is here tonight.”
“I tried,” you say, trying to peel back from him, but he won’t let his grip on you go, his head leaning down into your shoulder at this point.
“Yep, ‘smy fault, but do you blame me man?” he grins wickedly as he picks up his head and pulls you into a much more PG hold. “My girl that I love is here, you know how much I’ve missed the hell out of her and I mean look at her. You’re lucky I’ve behaved at all lately.”
“Shawn,” you push at him, face bright red.
Cez rolls his eyes and chuckles. “You are lucky I care about you the way I do, kid. God help me why I do, I wonder sometimes. You have 15 minutes to get yourself back to your room, cleaned up and changed before meet and greet starts. If you cannot behave, I will take your love with me, so you have to behave. Get it?”
“Come on,” you push him towards the door and in Cez’s direction while still tangled in his grasp. “Time to go be a Rockstar, Shawn.”
He loosens his grip on you, kissing your forehead before letting you go. Shawn nudges at him as he walks towards the door. Cez throws his arm around his neck in a loose head lock. The two walk through the door and down the hallway that way for a beat.
“Thank god for you. Someone here that he’ll really listen to,” Cez replies, letting him free of his hold.
“I listen to you,” he sticks his tongue out at him in retaliation as they hit the main hallway backstage.
“See what I deal with? Go, I’m back for you at 4!” Cez calls out walking past the both of you
“Wanna dress me?” he asks, wiggling his eyebrows with a wink as you get through to his room.
“I’ll help choose, no touching now, but I call dibs on getting you out of it later ok?” you pick through the rolling rack on the far wall.
He comes behind you to hug you again, his chin hooking over your shoulder. “Promise?”
You twist to kiss him as best you can. “Post Rockstar show Shawn is one of my favorites so yes, of course. Me, you and that couch after the show.”
“It’s a date.”

100 days of writing // day 1
thanks to @the-wip-project for putting this idea together and @kinetic-elaboration for always sharing her writing thoughts on tumblr. I see them and I love them and I’m going to try this thing out for myself! It’s always seemed like a very therapeutic thing to do, almost like a diary or journal, and that’s probably how a lot of these posts are going to read. No promises on consistent or quality content, but here we go! (please let me know if you’d like to be tagged in these posts, feel free to interact and reblog, and tag me in your posts as well, mutuals!)
So...I don’t actually write every day, but I do think about writing literally very single day of my life. I am sitting on a pile of WIPs and ideas that seem to be never-ending and I need to find a way to organize my work and motivate myself to do the actual writing bit...
When I started my journey back into fanfic writing, a couple of years ago, I had three initial fic ideas. Three vibes. Three stories I wanted to write...someday! But I’ve always felt with my writing that there were certain things I wasn’t ready for...there were certain ideas I wasn’t a good enough of a writer to write yet. I needed to practice.
So I came up with lots of ideas. Honestly, brainstorming and thinking about writing as always been way more easy for me, but like same, amiright? I would then write the “easier—less complex—good enough for me” fics. @troped-fanfic-challenge helped with that A LOT. And other fandom events. They helped me get over my fear of the way my writing had to be “good enough” and allowed it to just be. Practice isn’t meant to be perfect. These stories just need to exist outside of my brain.
Then I got really burnt out on TROPED writing and was just generally unhappy with most of the things I created last year. This year it has been better but I’ve still had some trouble being consistent. I’ve fallen behind on TROPED Rounds which frustrates me to no end. I also think being a mod is a hindrance sometimes because @dylanobrienisbatman and I come up with these prompts weeks and even months ahead of time, giving me just way too much time to let a idea marinate, so when the writing period comes around I’ve just fizzled out on it.
Today I’ve taken a look at my list of WIPs and ideas to figure out which one was calling to me the loudest. Here are a few I’ve been looking at: (keeping it vague in case these things never see the light of day!)
Conclave - this is the last TROPED event I was supposed to participate in. I had my Location/Character/Theme/Tropes all picked out, but I did not get past the intro during the writing period. typical. Motivation to continue it is low today.
1.0 R4 - this is the first one on my list I started and still need to finish from a early round of TROPED. Thankfully, it actually exists outside of my brain and Google doc, but after my initial writing time, I have not been able to finish this at all. I have one chapter and an epilogue left to write, but where has my inspiration gone too?! I would have to reread and get in a serious mental space to take this on again.
3.0 R3 - this idea is the most intriguing to me rn. I have an intro written and a pretty hefty outline for it. It’s the TROPED Fantasy Heist AU. There’s a lot of fun elements to it and it’ll be pretty wild by the time I get to the ending. I think there’s enough space between conception and now that I could potentially pick it up again.
JATP R4 - because brainstorming is the most fun, I’m tempted to play around with this round and figure out an idea for the prompt! I would want it to fit it into my Royalty Verse, but that’s adding another idea to my pile. woe is me.

I was tagged by @la-muerta & @facialteeth & @thedivinemissema for the WIP/Title Game
rules: post the names of all the files in your WIP folder, regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous. send me an ask with the title that most intrigues you and interests you and i’ll post a little snippet of it or tell you something about it!
AND THEN  by @shadoedseptmbr @msviolacea & @ravenclawnerd for the “stories you want to write... but for some reason haven’t yet”
so this will be a mish-mash of both? The WIPs will mostly have blurbs in this case (to fit the second meme) but you are still welcome to ask follow-up questions, if you’d like ;) Assuming you make it through the list, it is uh. Not Short.
Anyone who would like to play with their WIPs, please consider yourself tagged in either or both of these. :D
Misc Fic Folder:
“untitled document” - where I’m working on fictober fills so I have word-counts for my GYWO tracker. I am not working on these because Brains Are Dumb and also Going Back To Work Is Exhausting
I made a file called “YULETIDE!” which has nothing in it but I’m determined to finish this year so that is definitely technically a thing in the Unending WIP List of Doom worth mentioning. (Tho obviously that’s all I could say even if I had started, because anonymous.)
“coda-fics, rewatch!” -yes, that exclamation mark is important! it’s to keep me motivated! (it didn’t work). Much like untitled, this is for putting stuff so I can do word count tracking even if I don’t know what I’m doing. Currently I think it just says “MARYSE” because I was working on my SH 1x6 coda-fic and then got distracted and haven’t typed anything up yet. (Yay notebooks? Boo notebooks? Not even sure at this point.)
WNIP (works not in progress) Folder:
“TOG” - I had one vivid mental image of how Nicky & Joe met (blood-stained evil smiles?) but then no idea for a follow-up story and also the fandom is insane and I’m not sure I want to deal with all of *gestures vaguely* all that
“Shan Xia Notes” -for a TTRPG that never quite got off the ground; she was a semi-tragic selkie who was still in love with the evil queen/lady who stole her skin and I got to play her for like one session and she was surprisingly chaotic neutral, which wasn’t at all what I’d been expecting. But the game never really got off the ground, so I never had enough info to really delve into writing backstory fic
“post-Kruschev” -Kruschev’s List was the last episode of Scarecrow & Mrs King, and I was debating writing an epilogue in place of the s5 we never got, to try and tie up some loose ends, but the fandom’s three old-ladies in trench coats and I never quite worked up the gumption to get it anywhere
“Code Realize warm as silk sequel” -there is literally nothing in this file except “SEX! Only a little angst” because I wanted to write some “we can’t actually touch each other” smut but never actually did. 🤷‍♀️
BioWare (also all Not-In-Progress Anymore)
“seb/adelaide”, “Theia” & “DAI Erana” -these WIP folders were cannibalized for ficlets for the last few times I did fictober, and while originally I had ideas for longer epilogues for all three of them, at this point I don’t think any of the remaining bits could support a story any longer.
”whispers in the dark” -Maia Ryder never really got much fic at all; the cancellation of any further Andromeda stuff was really disheartening, and at this point I’d have to play the game again, and I don’t think I’m gonna manage that any time soon
”TSP” -a Mass Effect 3 Shepard AU collab project that kind of went off the rails, and our mutual brains/lives never quite seem to line up so we can try and rebuild it ”Ngaio & Tane” -my one truly ruthless Shepard (Alliance background, who romanced Traynor) whose father Tane Shepard was, I think, in PsyOps, and I wanted to figure out their complicated relationship but never really did know where I was going with it
”JE Zu & Yaling” -so I’ve rambled about my Tragic Sagacious Zu Romance Thoughts regarding Jade Empire more than once (#Icy Yaling should have most of it) but apparently I want to yell about it more than I want to actually write it? Whoops.
”CI sequel: 5 times fic?” -Cruel Intentions is a kinkmeme fill that I started and then it sat for like five years before I actually finished it, and I liked the ending, but it does leave a giant fucking question mark in terms of how those people got from there to where they are after the game, and I kind of wanted to write a proper h/c fic rather than just... leaving them wallowing in all that trauma?
But I didn’t. I don’t even remember for sure how I wanted to frame the 5/1 of it all, besides it being something sad about allowing people to see you or touch you in some way. (Prayers maybe, since I think there was definitely some Sebastian & Fenris & faith stuff going on in there.)
“candles” -Merribela prompt fill that I never was happy with? Not sure what I might do with it at this point, so it’s just sitting there all sad and lonely and neglected-like.
Shadowhunters
pt1: WIP LIST ONLY
“Persuasion” -so I keep trying to write Persuasion AUs in many fandoms because it’s my favorite Austen, but I think I like it too much, I have no real solid concept of how I’d transform it, and if I don’t have anything else to say about different characters within that framework, I have no push to actually write anything? Also this SH version of it suffered from MASSIVE scope creep when I started outlining and it got too big for me to handle so I like, killed it twice? Whoops. This one is really probably never gonna happen.
“oosdt sequel” -I wanted to write more about the Forest That Eats People and Magnus & Alec as Guardians Between Worlds, and also some background Magnus’ Found Family & Lightwood Family Feels (maybe some clizzy?) and I left a Madzie plot-thread dangling from the first one on purpose even but I think this one had too many ideas and not enough focus so it’s sort of sprawling all over a doc with a lot of “???” in it
“procedural-ish” -this was originally going to be a sex-farce. and then it turned more serious. and then maybe kind of copaganda which was uncomfortable in terms of the Everything That Is The News in 2020, and then maybe it was more a Mafia AU and at that point I had self-inflicted tone whiplash and I wished the voices in my head were a little more forthcoming about their plans so I stopped before I brained myself on my computer monitor in frustration.
“I had rather a rose than live forever” -I started a reverse!verse Malec (Shadowhunter!Magnus, High Warlock!Alec) for bingo last year, and I couldn’t quite get it together in time, so I made a moodboard inspired by the bits I’d started instead. I may see if one of my prompts from Bingo this year help me finish it?
“fall fright fest (practical magic  au)” -exactly what it says on the tin! almost exactly a year old & neglected! IDEK ANYMORE (I talked about this one with the WIP meme last time tho: here)
“priest!kink theology?” -I thought it was gonna be smut? I like priest!kink. I have made other people like it and yell at me even! But then I kept diverging into demon!Magnus thinking about Priest!Alec’s faith and as usual, IDEK ANYMORE *laughs*
(If they’re remotely canon-adjacent or divergent, a bunch of these are in here because I need to rewatch the show to get the pacing/timing/tone right and I haven’t, and I don’t know why, because I enjoy the show, but BRAINS! Are Dumb! So I guess that’s it?)
“I do” -I have tried to write this damnable Malec arranged marriage fic like six different times. I have signed up for fic exchanges and bangs with it, I have rewritten massive sections, trying to change tone or structure or POV or whatever, and it basically comes down to they like each other too fast and I keep not gutting it enough to get back to a useful pace, but by the time I realized that I was on take six and kind of sick of it. I may get back to it eventually
“wing!fic” -canon divergent in early s1, trying to deal with the consequences of Simon’s kidnapping as the Truly Serious Event that it should have been. It uh. Got heavier than I expected with those consequences (considering it was originally just supposed to be Alec’s wings flirting with Magnus) and also see above re: rewatching for pacing.
“2x20 aftermath/date night/pandemonium porn“ -yes that is the actual wip title. It used to be “spite fic” because I was originally inspired by fighting against a lot of fic!Alec characterization that was clearly based more on the books and ATG syndrome than the Alec in the show, which is the Alec I know and like and want to read about. BUT, pacing and etc. again, I think. Also I have somehow entirely lost my knack for writing porn, which makes it difficult to finish something originally intended to be smut!fic. Or even teasing almost!smut.
“rubbish heap” -so this is about three different fics that I realized complemented each other really well so they’re now all in the same file as I try to turn them into the sequel of “with an if in its soul”. It includes amnesia, parabatai lore shenanigans, a s3 rewrite, and some truly awful Owl adjustments that make me wince in horrified authorly delight and pain. BUT, as with the other ones in this file, the scope is large and I normally write short-fic and I kind of just threw up my hands in exasperation. I may have to break it back up into the three different fics instead, if I ever actually want to write it. Them? But also I need to take better notes on s3 to make sure I have what I need in here.
SH Pt 2: Started posting or not yet in hiatus because it’s actually almost ready to be a thing in the real world! maybe!?
“kisses (firsts)” -I actually started publishing this one, a “series of firsts” that was supposed to be kind of relationship milestones and kind of an excuse for smut, and then there wasn’t that much smut and I lost momentum and also dear lords & ladies the timeline is stupid, wtf. I may not ever add to this one, tbqh. It doesn’t stop in a terrible place, and they’re all ficlets so they stand alone all right.
“clizzy epilogue” -this is blank atm, it’s more a reminder for me to keep poking away at my “girls who can’t breathe air, only fire” collection BECAUSE I WOULD LIKE TO ACTUALLY GET TO THE CLIZZY AT SOME POINT
"mer!alec" -pts 2-4 of a series, but apparently having an actual plan gets in the way of me *writing* the thing, and I haven't managed to throw the half an outline far enough away from my brain to be able to write again. Or something like that.
"ibhww" -if broken hearts were whole is a soulmate fic I started a million years ago, and purposefully set aside to finish some other WIPs because I thought they'd be quick, and now it's just buried under two and a half years of regret and shame so it's hard to get back to it
"iafy" -i am for you is a delightful & frothy semi-epistolary fluff piece that also just lost momentum because Life & 2020 & etc. It's far and away the most popular thing I've ever posted on AO3, which also makes me feel weird sometimes, and I feel like the fact that there's no grand conclusion planned, just a bit more fluff and settling in, might end up being disappointing? Basically, it's the first time I think I've psyched myself out about reader expectations, and until I get over that I'm going to have trouble finishing the last couple chapters. (There really are probably only two more chapters though. IT’S SO CLOSE, I wish I could just... write it. And yet?)
“fake-hating” -I do not like fake dating as a trope that much, I just do not get it, but I love outside POVs and arranged marriages and there’s this delighful tumblr post about how they wished there was more fic about people who were together but had to pretend they werent’, and uh. This may be that? Eventually? I’m not exhausted by my failure to finish it yet, so it’s still in the regular folder rather than the hiatus folder, even though nothing’s been posted for it.
AND I THINK THAT’S IT?
Not as terrible as it could be, but still. MANY WORDS THAT MAY NEVER SEE THE LIGHT OF DAY. Posting the equivalent of one’s old ratty sketchbook is always a weird feeling. :D

FAQ
For The Hyrule Exchange on AO3
What is a Gift Exchange? It’s when a group of creative fans get together to do a Secret-Santa style gift exchange.  Each participant who signs up is offering to write a story, draw a piece of fan art, or create a comic based off a list of prompts they have been given.  In return they will receive a story, piece of art or comic based off a list of prompts they provided.
What sort of things are allowed? Any fan work for The Legend of Zelda & its related fandoms as long as it matches the tags your recipient requested!  This means that if your recipient requested Link & Zelda, fanfic, and Skyward Sword Canon Universe, you have to write them a fanfic involving Link and Zelda as friends or partners within the Skyward Sword Canon Universe, without involving anything on their DNW (Do Not Want) list.  However, any other details they write in the Details box are a guideline, not a requirement.
What about crossovers/fan work of a fan work? You are given five prompts to fill out, if you want a crossover or fan work of a fan work, that’s fine as long as the crossover or fan work includes the Legend of Zelda & its related properties.  Linkedin Universe?  Fine.  Legend of Zelda/Zorro?  Go for it.  Smash Bros?  As long as you request a Zelda character.
I would recommend that not all five of your prompts be for crossovers or fan work of a fan work, as that will make it harder to find you a match.
What am I expected to do? By signing up you are agreeing to write a 1k or more fan fiction, create a 500x500 or larger piece of fan art with clean lines, or to create a three panel or larger comic for the Legend of Zelda based off a list of prompts you will receive.
Fan Art and Comic can be debated on a case by case basis if so desired.
How do tags work? On AO3, tags involving an & are for nonromantic/nonsexual relationships, and tags involving an / are for romantic/sexual relationships.  Mipha&Sidon is for Mipha and Sidon as siblings or friends; Mipha/Sidon is incest.
There are no restrictions on what ships you are allowed to request or offer, so long as your prompt involves at least one Legend of Zelda character.  Please do not be a jerk about people liking things you don’t like.
Please also say if you are a minor so that people know not to give you anything NSFW.
When do assignments go out, and when are they due? Prompts will be sent out on the 21st of April and due on the 12th of June.
What do I do if there’s stuff I particularly want or don’t want to make? When putting in your offers, please included any special requests.  Such as: What medium you are offering; Fic, Art, Comic, all of the above. Are you comfortable offering NSFW? What games, canons are you offering? Preferred genres or story type. Character or Paring preference. Gen, M/F, F/F, M/M, Poly, other, or all of the above? Anything you don’t want to offer?
What do I do if there’s stuff I don’t want to receive?
Put it in your DNW (Do Not Want) at the bottom of your prompt. Whatever you put there I can enforce and make sure is not in your gift. If you have a link to a letter and have extra DNWs over there I can not enforce them.
Also if you are only interested in getting one type of medium, say you only want to receive fanfic, put that in your request/prompt.
Remember give detail without being restrictive. Here are some bad examples; Link, Time Travel. - Nice, but you're going to give your gifter heart palpitations because there’s not enough detail to give them inspiration or to show what you like.
Twilight Princess comic Link time travels into Twilight Princess game canon, just in time to save Ordon Village from the bokoblin raid by using dark shadow powers he picked up from Midna while wearing a blue and green butterfly crown he got from Agitha. After cutting off the boss bokoblin’s head by using the secret technique helm splitter, the whole village celebrates by roasting up pumpkins and the bokoblin’s boar. Link gets drunk on goat butterbeer and teaches everyone a dance he learned in Castle Town, also he tells the younger Link not to lead Ilia on as he’s going to meet someone way hotter later and should probably try hooking her up with the Zora prince instead. - Fun, but you’ve added in a lot of details your gifter may or may not want to write. Also, you seem to have a clear picture of this, are you sure don’t want to write it yourself?
What is a letter? You may notice the option to link to a letter.  You can use Google docs, Tumblr, Dreamwidth, Pillowfort, or any other hosting site to write a more in-depth request to go along with your prompts.  This is a good place to add, for example, little things you enjoy about characters, setting details you’re keen to see, fic genres or tropes you enjoy, any kinks you might have.  It gives your gifter more to work with and a better feel for what you like, but they are not required to add anything from your letter.  (It can also, for this exchange, help your mod with the matching process.)
I’m really busy.  How do I drop out? On AO3, in the top right corner, there’s a drop down menu, if you click “Hi, Name!” on that menu is “My Assignments.” Please find you assignment for this exchange and hit the Default button as soon as you realize you can’t complete your assignment before the deadline so a pinch hitter can be found.
What if I can’t finish in time? Your assignment gives you a choice between five prompts, of which you can choose to fill as many as you like so long as you fill as least one in a way that matches the prompt.
That said, life is crazy for everyone right now and things happen.  If you know you won’t be able to complete your assignment, contact me as quickly as possible so a pinch hitter can be found.  There will be not be a punishment for this, I just make sure everyone gets a present on time.
And of course, you can always submit a late work if/when you do finish, so don’t feel discouraged.
Am I certain to get a gift? So long as you complete your assignment, yes!  All pinch hits will be posted to the tumblr as they come up, and assignments will be due over a week before all gifts are revealed, so that I can ensure that everyone gets a gift.  Gifts will not be revealed if anyone is still missing theirs.
You may still get a gift if you drop out.  Please remember to thank the person who made it for you!
Pinch Hits? What’s that? A pinch hit is when someone’s requests are posted for anyone to claim as a second assignment, to fill for whoever dropped out.  Please follow the Hyrule Exchange tumblr in order to keep track of them, and either send an ask/message to the tumbler account or email [email protected] to claim it if you’re willing and able to pick it up.
How do I post my work? Go to AO3's New Work. If you're writing a fic, it's the same process as usual, except that you need to click the button saying that this is an Assignment. If you're drawing art or making edits, please follow this tutorial instead. It's mostly the same, though.
Can I post multiple works? Of course! As long as you finish one prompt you can do as many as you like.
Have any more questions? Feel free to ask!

Angst/Fluff Writing Prompt Fun Wrap Up!
Now that I have finally finished all the submitted prompts I thought it would be fun to do a cute little wrap up in case you might have missed any of the stories along the way, along with some background/thoughts/feels about each one! Duration May 13th - July 15th (that was longer than I expected but cool!) 1.  Rain and Confessions (Kyoya X Haruhi WC: 1,662)  Prompt: “And yet, you’re still not enough.”  Summary: After her graduation from law school, Haruhi and Kyoya pack up her apartment in preparation of Haruhi moving back to Japan. Kyoya has been waiting years for this moment and he is going to let Haruhi know exactly how he feels about Haruhi and isn't going to let a little rain ruin his plans for them. AO3, Tumblr, FF.Net Thoughts: This prompt is a canon insecurity for Kyoya and so it was easy for me to write- considering I posted the prompt list on the 13th and uploaded it on the 14th. But also it was so hard to write because they are my OTP!! It pained me to make them suffer like this. To make Kyoya vulnerable is tough. To bring down his walls in front of someone is a struggle. Upon reading back through it I dare say there is a peep of inspiration from Pride and Prejudice (can you spot the hidden Mr. Darcy-like quote?). Favorite Line:  “You say that you will do all these things out of your love for me but it is because of my love for you that I cannot accept your offer because you become less of who you are and more of the person you think I need.”  2. Public Masks for Private Matters (Takashi x Haruhi WC: 1,269) Prompt:  “Being alone would be better than being married to you.”
Summary: Haruhi has finally reached her breaking point. After winning her career-defining case her world comes crashing down. Blame has been assigned and trust has been broken between Haruhi and Takashi.
AO3, Tumblr, FF.Net Thoughts: The TakaHaru ship is by far one of the hardest ships to use with angsty writing because of the nature of Takashi. The hurt he could inflict on Haruhi isn’t something so obvious like physical/mental/emotional abuse. I think in my mind that it is his lack of response is the most believable response to causing conflict between them- his inability/insecurity to say the right thing at the right time. At least that is what it would come off to others. Takashi is an introvert/observer. If he was experiencing emotional distress he would probably cave in and bottle things up, holding the burden alone.  (Spoliers!!) The real secret behind this fic is that Takashi only ever told her the truth. Haruhi busted a major company for the terrible working conditions of their low income employees. A week after the close of the trial she was jumped by a group of people and was sent to the hospital. They had know she was pregnant for a short while and wanted to keep it a secret because of the high profile nature of the case- not even telling friends or family. They lost the baby and it broke them. To this day they still have not mentioned the loss of their child. So naturally they suffer alone, putting on masks for the public. I honestly thought about writing something more with this background information but it just seemed a little difficult to set up the scene. Favorite Line:  “The love I held for you is what blinded me.“ 3. Cameras and Questions (Kyoya x Haruhi WC: 1,181) Prompt:  An almost kiss Summary:  Yet again Kyoya convinces Haruhi to be his date to another gala event. Haruhi asks a question that gets answered in the most unusual way. Is there more going on between a young no-name lawyer and one of Japan's Top 5 Eligible Bachelors than the public is aware? AO3, Tumblr, FF.Net
Thoughts: This was so fun to write! I love writing snarky Haruhi. I also love writing the back and forth between them. I mean they are my OTP I love the chase. XD I feel like they both can be very up front with each other but that they enjoy the subtleties of their conversations. I love the challenge between them, and how they push and test each other. I think in the beginning I didn’t quite know how to put them in a situation where there was an almost kiss, mostly because I still couldn’t get myself to fully commit to a fluffy piece of writing. But I think with what I did I could classify it as fluff defined by my standards (nobody died and everyone is happy). Favorite Line:  “I don’t know any Ootori man to half-ass anything.” 4. Disgust and Devotion (Hikaru x Haruhi WC:1,083) Prompt:  “Please don’t cry.” & “It’s three in the morning. What could you possibly want?” Summary:  They said that it wouldn't work between them. Are their worlds so far apart that it is impossible? Hikaru is caught up in another scandal and Haruhi has reached her limit. Does she love him enough to stay or is she just too weak to leave? AO3, Tumblr, FF.Net Thoughts: I think at this point in the prompts I still couldn’t get myself to write fluff and this ask was a fluff/angst mix with the two prompts provided. I do enjoy writing the HikaHaru ship even if there is not much out there. Originally when I was working on brainstorming ideas the end game was for them to have angry makeup sex. But I just couldn’t twist what I had in a way that would flow naturally with the base plot. I think I like writing Hikaru slightly drunk. It curves his temper and makes him more mellow. But he is still our impulsive little boy and he still has a ways to grow up. This wasn’t the first time that something like this has come up. Though both times he was not at fault (though in the original idea he totally did cheat one drunk night but couldn’t really remember). If anything the fluff is implied at the end.... Favorite Line:  “The media can make it look like anything they want to with a well-timed photo.” 5. Love Over Reason (Takashi x Haruhi WC: 2,102) Prompt: “Are you blushing?” Summary: Loving someone is complicated. Sometimes we feel as though the ones we love deserve more than we can give. Does spending six months apart change Takashi and Haruhi's feelings for the better or for worse? AO3, Tumblr, FF.Net Thoughts: There was about 5 days between this fic and Disgust and Devotion and I still couldn’t really bring myself to write straight fluff... But this turned into quite a piece. I think I was hitting a stride of coffee shop AUs and I just couldn’t help myself. Ever love someone so much you push them away because you think it will be better than dragging them through your mess? Well same. I think the fluff in this fic is subtle. They care so deeply for one another that they don’t want to hurt each other more. And just to be kind I added more fluff at the end. I’m not sure I really like how I used the prompt for this one but what’s posted is posted. Favorite Line:  “All I have ever wanted from you is you.” - This line still gets me all sorts of choked up when I read it.
6. Brutality Mixed With Intimacy (Takashi x Haruhi WC: 1,455)
Prompt:  'Please don't cry' or 'You know I have feelings for you, right?'
Summary:  After months of following dead ends, the Ouran Association finally has a solid lead to obtaining useful information on the ring leader of a major underground human trafficking organization in Japan. All other hits had gone to plan for Takashi but this one hit too close to home. With Haruhi as their next target, he couldn't handle the risk of possibly losing her.
AO3, Tumblr, FF.Net
Thoughts: Cue the beginning evidence of my current obsession with Mafia AU’s... The mafia au is just the perfect setting for my dark angsty heart! I just couldn’t resist. Especially when fluff was so far down the list of things I still wanted to write. I won’t name names but a certain TakaHaru shipper threatened me that they were going to write a fix it fic so that Haruhi actually ended up with Takashi instead of Tamaki. And of course she would end up with Tamaki, he of all of them would have the least blood on his hands.
Favorite Line:  “You were never going to make it to the drop off location.”
7. Fashion and Feelings (Hikaru x Haruhi WC: 2,691)
Prompt: “You know I have feelings for you right?”
Summary: After years of silently watching and pining for Haruhi from afar, Hikaru finally gets the courage to reveal his true feelings for her. With his new spring line debuting in a few short days Hikaru is going to lay his fashion reputation and love all on the line in hopes of having his feelings reciprocated.
AO3, Tumblr, FF.Net
Thoughts: Finally, FINALLY, finally I was able to pull out just the most fluffy fluff I could write! Like it took everything I had to put no angst in this one at all. This prompt sat for weeks and weeks without progress. I didn’t have a clue with what I was going to do with it. Like, it laughed at me with it’s blank doc. I wanted this final prompt to be just fluff so I left it to sit until I finally had a spark of fluff. This can be read alone or as part of the back story for Disgust and Devotion.
Favorite Line:  “Most people would be creeped out by someone other than a significant other who bought them lingerie.” Final Thoughts:
Shortest- Cameras and Questions Longest- Fashion and Feelings Combined Total Word Count: 11,443 Title Themes- I really wanted to give this round of prompts a slightly longer title theme. My favorite is probably Brutality Mixed With Intimacy but a close runner up is Public Masks for Private Matters.
Favorite- Fashion and Feelings Least Favorite- Love Over Reason Thanks to everyone who submitted requests! It is always a pleasure writing for you!

okay so i was going to send in an ask for the director’s cut thing, but there were too many fics i wanted to ask about 😭 i’ll send them in but PLEASE keep in mind you don’t have to do them all i feel bad dmfjsjf
move so pretty (you’re all i see), sleeping on our problems, works like a charm, just a flicker in the dark, and sweet like honey
ahhh omg thank you for sending these in! i’m so sorry for how long it took to get out - i may have forgotten about it shjkskss also i don’t mind talking about all of them but i’m definitely going to keep each one short. you can find them under the cut:
move so pretty (you’re all i see) ~
this fic was started initially when i was doing word prompts using curiouscat! people would send me words and i’d write a quick little drabble/snippet... they’re typically around 300-ish words but i got the word “owns,” and maybe got a bit carried away? i think that prompt ended up being 1k words - too long to post using cc so i had to take screenshots and post as separate tweet.
the idea that came to me was something i love to read in fics: one of them walking in on the other masturbating. i didn’t intend for it to become anything more than that snippet but i what can i say? i got intrigued. my brain helpfully provided a backstory: best friends, harry maybe having feelings for louis but not wanting to ruin their friendship...
fast-forward three days and i posted an 11k fic shjssks
this was my first attempt at writing a pwp so that was an interesting experience!!! i’m too obsessed with giving backstories and arcs to ever write just pure smut but this is the closest i’ve gotten??? 5.5k/11k being smut, that is. and for once coming up with the title wasn’t too hard because there’s one song i always think of when it comes to best friends to lovers and that’s lucky!!
i don’t really know what else to say for this one! i remember sarah and i both wrote and posted pwps in a short span of each other so that was fun... she’s actually the one who motivated me to finish and post this fic instead of just letting the idea go. and her dog ended up in the story: chica <3 my absolute favorite <3333
sleeping on our problems ~
welp. this fic was a struggle for a long time. idk if i’ve talked about it on this blog but this fic was initially an exes to lovers fic!!! where they spent harry’s rut together right before breaking up and then louis finds out he’s pregnant and angst ensues.
changing it to a one-night stand (even though it wasn’t only one night shjksks) ended up being a really good decision in the way that this new version of the story required a lot less angst and reflection of their past relationship, choices, actions!! that first fic was going to be a lot heavier i think shjsks but i really love how it turned out!!
barring the main tropes, the progression of the story and the outline itself changed so. much. in the process of writing... i found an earlier saved version of my outline and the story is almost completely unrecognizable haha. and actually the most recent saved version of the outline is also not 100% accurate to the final story because for the last 10k of the story, i was flying completely free shjsksk.
also, even after i finished the fic, i went back and added two scenes the next day so it’s safe to say i changed so much of this story -- it was never supposed to be that long either hsjsksk the goal was 48-50k and i thought i was being optimistic!
somewhat in the same vein but also really different: this fic was one of the first fics i ever wrote out of order! before this, i had switched around maybe a couple times when writing a fic but mostly stuck to chronological order. but in this one i kept getting stuck with certain scenes and decided that i’d never reach my goal of finishing unless i switched to parts of the story i had the inspiration to write in the moment instead of getting stuck on one single part i had no motivation for. it really helped the process and i’ve been switching around ever since.
another thing that really helped me actually finish this fic was the motivation and encouragement of people on twitter and i’m still so appreciative of it now :’) there’s no way i could have finished this fic without the kind words and well wishes of my mutuals!!
(also - i included an easter egg in this fic from another one of my fics... i suppose that’s sort of the type of insight that fits for these things? the ballet louis and harry saw in new york was swan lake <3)
works like a charm ~
ooo i wrote this fic for my friend’s birthday!! she loves hp aus and slytherin hl so it was just a given that i write that for her. i was on a deadline - pretty sure i made the doc on september 4th, aka nine days before i posted - and i hadn’t had my full outline done when i started which is is... let’s just say very uncommon.
this is another example of me going off outline and changing the story as i went because initially the estimation was about 12k and the basic plot was that after they’d fuck for the first time, they’d immediately talk about the past and resolve those misunderstandings. but when i got to that point, i realized it felt too rushed for how the story was progressing so i extended it a bit and added some more *tension* and *miscommunication* until they finally got their shit together!
also i feel like some would find louis’ blatant lies when interrogated about his feelings for harry to be unrealistic but as someone who has definitely done the exact same thing (lmao - without the happy ending), i find it a definite possibility. and i mean, we all say stuff we don’t mean under pressure - whether it’s to louis’ (and my) extent or not.
another thing i remember about this fic was having to work out with sarah - who was also posting a fic for this friend’s birthday - posting times and dates. we eventually agreed that she’d post first and i’d post the day after (neither were the actual day of the birthday because we were both running late!) this is a conversation we proceeded to have many other times since we both have made habits of birthday fics and we pretty much have the same friends.
all of this was also happening in sync with us writing a fic together for our other friend’s birthday which was on the 8th... yes it was exactly as chaotic and stressful as you’re thinking but also fun! and i love all three fics involved!! haha.
just a flicker in the dark ~
okay this fic is definitely my favorite thing i’ve ever written and i’ve said that before many, many times but it’s true! but it too changed so much from the initial idea to the final end product.
in fact, the original idea was a 20k somewhat-crack fic where harry was a ghost and louis was the paranormal investigator trying to get him to stop haunting this house. it was just supposed to be a quick and fun halloween fic to work on while finishing up my first blff and finally making head way on my abandoned second blff... obviously, that changed drastically.
it initially started with me getting the idea of louis and harry being partners and enemies. and then i was thinking... why not throw exes on top of it while we’re there??? that was completely self-indulgent since exes to lovers is my favorite trope of all time. but the idea was still that they were paranormal investigators trying to work a case on a haunted house and though the estimated wc had raised to 35k, i was still hoping that it’d be quick and easy because i had two other projects that needed a lot of my attention.
then came the first day of october. i woke up after having the craziest dream about louis and harry and the ghost that was not really a ghost. i ended up writing about 7k that thursday and the story really just took shape from there. the first sequence i wrote was actually the scene where louis goes into the backyard and ends up in the pocket dimension where the spirit imprints on him - i think it was a 3.5k scene and it just flew out of me sjksjsk. after that i took a small break to start my outline but it was more of a messy list of ideas and details and things i wanted to include than my usual organized format. the next scene i wrote that day was the scene where louis is in the bedroom and the demon is there but harry is not but then he is (i’m so good at describing things, right?) that’s actually one of my favorite scenes i’ve ever written and the funny thing is that i barely even knew all the details of the demon plot by this point but my hands just kept typing and my brain had the tendrils of the story forming and that amazing feeling that this is something good.
i could ramble on forever about the process of writing this fic but i’ll just say that it’s the most fun i’ve ever had writing anything ever. word-building and supernatural elements are my favorite and getting to delve into those things here was so much fun! the entire process took twenty-five days (spanning from october 1st to october 28th - with a small three day break to focus on finishing miss wedding au!!) and though i did have some small struggles and moments of writer’s block, for the most part the story just came to me. and it’s so amazing to me because i didn’t even have all the details and facets of the plot until louis did too but it ended up working out??? if anything, it showed his process of figuring things out really well because it was the process of me figuring things out!
also this was the first time i heavily featured a fic pet in a fic and i fell as much in love with venus as everyone else did :’) she has my heart, truly <3 i love this world and these characters so so much and i hope to return to it sometime in the future!
sweet like honey ~
whooo, okay, this fic... yikes. this fic was a capital s Struggle.
so basically this fic was written for the blff and though it came out first, it was the second prompt i signed up for, prompt 63: Friends to lovers AU where Harry and Louis are best friends and flatmates in Uni and they both need money, Harry for his gym membership and Louis for cute stuff like sanrio plushies, so they decide to film homemade porn videos together. Louis is shy and sweet and maybe inexperienced and Harry kinda doms him.
i remember the exact moment i saw the blff post on tumblr about it being allowed to sign up for another prompt from that point on - i was sitting at the counter at my friend’s ranch’s kitchen eating crepes and browsing on my phone. i saw the post and immediately signed up for this prompt because it had been my second choice and though i love love loved my first prompt so much, i was disappointed at not being able to write this one... but i did!
the idea and basic outline was actually completed way back in july/august but for some reason i just couldn’t make any actual progress on it for so long??? i’m pretty sure the document was stuck at 5k for over three months shsjksks to be fair, i did keep pushing it to the side in favor of other newer fics but i was just experiencing the biggest barrier when it came to this story and characters.
in fact, i actually reached out to the mods in late october about a potential extension - they informed me that all writers could use a two week extension if needed and i figured that would be fine. however, i didn’t end up using it! within the first few days of november, i managed to pull the wc up to 8k by the skin of my teeth (was still majorly struggling) - i was still sure i’d need an extension but then something really awful but in this case, helpful, happened...
election week.
basically, i’m a big stress-writer. writing is what i do when i’m upset or anxious or stressed because it truly is my happy place. i wouldn’t say writing during that week made me feel much better about everything going on but it provided a distraction. so much though that i went from 8k to 24k in the span of a few days... and i have absolutely no recollection of writing any of it.
not only did i not need any extension, i also somehow ended up finishing early by a few days. and i really liked what i had!! or what i remembered of it anyway shjskks.
one thing i remember really focusing on in terms of these characters and dynamic was having it actually just be them starting as friends and developing feelings later. i feel like a common trope in friends to lovers fics is having one or both of them with pre-existing feelings that they feel is unrequited. obviously there’s nothing wrong with that (i’ve written it myself lol) and it’s a common trope for a reason - because it’s good - but i wanted to try something a little different. them actually filming these videos is what acted as the catalyst to them beginning to view their relationship with new eyes and open the door to the eventual feelings that developed.
i also had so much fun writing harry’s pov in this one haha. i feel like this version of him was really bold and shameless and super easy for me to develop.
this is also the closest i’ve ever gotten to meeting my estimation word count... ever. my estimate was 32k and it ended up at 33k!!! and yes i’m more proud of that than i should be lol
-
anyways, i pretty much just rambled but if anyone sees this and gets some good insight out of it, then yay! feel free to send more director’s cut inquiries!! i love doing them (even if it takes me weeks - sorry again!)

This is it. I have reached 4500 amazing followers. I can’t do what I do without you guys! I celebrate, I wanted to try something different this time around. I don’t normally do challenges, but I really wanted to do this one!
For this challenge, I wanted for it to be special, so here’s the tea: I have a lot of stories for this blog. A lot of different stories with a lot of different tiles ranging from all over the spectrum. For this challenge, you ask for a character or actor (any character or actor you want tbh) and I will provide you with a surprise title from one of my stories. That title can be used as your title, an inspiration for the fic, a line used in the fic, a prompt inspiration or whatever, but the title has to be used in some way or another.
You won’t know what you’re getting so I will allow ONE change and ONE change only to each person who signs up.
Be creative, have fun, and don’t afraid to step out of your comfort zone.
So, without further ado, the rules are below!
Rules:
- the fandoms I accept for this challenge are Supernatural, Marvel, The Vampire Diaries, Criminal Minds, and Grey’s Anatomy. Any character or actor from those fandoms will be allowed.
- send me an ASK (no anon) of which character or actor you want from the specified fandom (i.e. Sam from Supernatural or Steve from Marvel, etc). RPF is allowed for this challenge. any replies and PMs will be ignored.
- I will provide you with a title of one of my stories, and if you hate it, then you can ask for a replacement title. one redo per person.
- you are allowed to sign up as much as you want, but I will need all the fics you ask for.
- the fic can be of any length you want it to be, but if it’s over 500 words, please use a “keep reading” or I won’t reblog it.
- the due date for this challenge is August 1st, 2019 so you can start posting whenever you get your title.
- when you’ve posted your fic, please add it to this doc so it can be added to the masterlist. I will ONLY be putting the fics listed in there on the masterlist so if you want to be included, then add it.

- I will try and reblog all fics I get along with some form of feedback attached to it. If I haven’t in 24 hours, send me an ask so I can get to it!
- any genre is accepted i.e. smut, crack, fluff, angst, etc. All I ask is that you warn accordingly.
- have fun and be creative!

Author Spotlight: AlexxAplin
Every week we interview a writer from The Magicians fandom. If you would like to be interviewed or you want to nominate a writer, get in touch via our ask box.
First things first, tell us a little about yourself.
I am a gay, 25 year old who loves most things entertainment related, from gaming, to TV and Film. I'm an Entertainment Journalist by trade, and I write (and roleplay) in my spare time as well, mostly because my creative energy can't be contained by just articles alone.
How long have you been writing for?
That is quite a hard question. Technically I've been writing various things since I was 13, but I didn't really get into Roleplaying or Fandom writing until I was about 16, so...almost 10 years?
What inspired you to start writing for The Magicians?
That is a tough question, but I think I can answer it fairly concisely by saying that Prior to 4x13, I had written mostly with a few people that weren't REALLY fans, but were humoring me lol. After the finale, I was very upset and aimless, until I met a group of like-minded people on Discord, who not only encouraged me and supported my ideas, but also decided to write with me too (a few of them anyhow :) )
Who is/are your favourite character(s) to write? What it is about them that makes them your favourite?
I absolutely LOVE writing Q. I identify him pretty well, and I enjoy playing him a little more...sensual than he is allowed to be in the show or in the books. I think my second favorite (not counting a character i've created and haven't ACTUALLY shared yet) would have to be Eliot, because he is just so much fun in general.
Do you have a preference for a particular season/point in time to write about?
It really depends on my mood honestly. I love doing Fix-its, Canon-Divergent AUs, and anything involving reworking things, or adding new ideas to make things even crazier. My favorite season is Season 3 though, so I need to write more in that timeline context.
Are you working on anything right now? Care to give us an idea about it?
Oh boy, do you have all week? Lol. Uh, right now i'm in the process of editing a fic I wrote with a friend of mine, and I have another collaborative fic (that I worked on with the same Author) that i've got to find time to post.
I also have a fic for the MHHE (Magicians Hallmark Holiday Extravaganza) I'm working on with a friend, and a DOZEN and one other projects that are in progress.
How long is your “to do list”?
Too long to name to be honest, and it keeps growing! I swear my brain is housing these ideas in some flubbery substance.
What is your favourite fic that you’ve written for The Magicians? Why?
I only have two fics up right now, but my favorite fic is one I hope to actually put up on Ao3 either today or tomorrow, called Eau De Spicy Nerd. It is a cheeky little play on a few things, and I can't wait for people to see it.
Many writers have a fic that they are passionate about that doesn’t get the reception from the fandom that they hoped for. Do you have a fic you would like more people to read and appreciate?
I'll be honest, most of my favorite fics are from other people. However, I think of my fics, my "Is that Alright?" Fic (which is currently two standalone chapters but will be expanded soon for a full cohesive story) is an emotional feelings train that I hope more people see and resonate with. Fair warning I have been told it will make you cry.
What is your writing process like? Do you have any traditions or superstitions that you like to stick to when you’re writing?
My writing process is very instinctual. I'm terrible at writing by myself in most cases, because I thrive on interaction, bouncing ideas back and forth, and then just letting things go where they go. As stupid as it may sound, sometimes I feel like the characters are more in control of what lands on the page than I am. I just...feel it. Sometimes I lay awake with scenes playing in my head, that i have to write down or I just can't sleep at all.
I usually write a fic (with a friend usually, minus Is That Alright? and its first two chapters) and then afterward I compile it all in a doc (usually pasted from Discord) and work my way through, adding things that come to mind. I pass it off to any other authors collaborating, then once it is polished it goes on to a Beta.
Do you write while the seasons are airing or do you prefer to wait for hiatus? How does the ongoing development of the canon influence and inspire your writing process?
I am quite literally ALWAYS writing. It keeps me sane, especially when work is hectic. Unless work is taking too much of my focus, i'm always working on things. Canon ACTUALLY has helped me finish things before, or has given me ideas to start new things. Sometimes even the smallest plot thread will spark a full idea for me, for example I had the idea for a full AU verse I haven't started yet, just from a conversation about Fillorian marriage and Polyamory.
What has been the most challenging fic for you to write?
Well, I can't REALLY talk too heavily about it because it is my MHHE fic, but the hardest part for me has been sticking to the prompt and not deviating. Sometimes I have ideas for things that stray too far, and i'm having to learn to NOT do that, since it is for a challenge and not my own enjoyment.
Are there any themes or tropes that you like particularly like to explore in your writing?
I love writing smutty things. I think our society should be more sex positive, and so I often try to make my fics the "NC17" version if possible. Some plots aren't conducive for that, which is fine, but anything with smut, or fluff, is A++ in my book. I also love soulmate AU's, Soul bonding, and lots and lots of cheesy things.
Are there any writers that inspire your work? Fanfiction or otherwise?
Oh goodness, I'm not sure I should call out individual folks here, but I am totally inspired by SO MANY Fanfic writers. I also love Neil Gaiman and Lev Grossman as artists and people. To be honest though I am most inspired by fanfic writers these days, because the world is a scary place and fanfic gives me a break. I've learned so many great techniques from fanfic writers too.
What are you currently reading? Fanfiction or otherwise?
I gobble up as much Magicians fic as I can, usually the fluffy or smutty stuff unless i'm in the mood for tears lol. I also keep up with a few different authors, but these days I don't have as much time to read novels as i'd like.
What is the most valuable piece of writing advice you’ve ever been given?
The best advice I've ever been given is actually two pieces of advice. 1. Never force yourself to finish something your heart isn't in. If you do, you won't be satisfied with the end result. 2. Do not set out to tell the story you planned. Set out to tell a GOOD story you and your readers will love. If you love it, other people will too.
Are there any words or phrases you worry about over using in your work?
Oh there are plenty, most are descriptors for facial expressions. I sometimes find it hard to balance too much detail with not enough detail.
What was the first fanfic that you wrote? Do you still have access to it?
I actually don't remember what my first Fanfic was. I don't think I've posted most of my beginning work. I think the first one was a Queer as Folk fanfic that got lost on an old, dead hard-drive lol.
Rapidfire Round!
Self-edit or Beta?
Both, a good author knows their flaws and also seeks critique.
Comments or Kudos/Reblogs or Likes?
Give it all to me, or whatever makes you feel most comfortable. I'm not fussy, I just want people to enjoy what I write.
Smut, Fluff or Angst?
Smut or Fluff. Angst is reserved for if i'm in the right headspace, i've had...bad experiences.
Quick & Dirty or Slow Burn?
Depends on my mood, some days I don't have the attention span for a slow burn fic, especially if it is incomplete.
Favourite Season?
Season Three
Favourite Episode?
The Musical Episode with Under Pressure. So much of that was AMAZINGLY done.
Favourite Book?
Haven’t read them.
Three favourite words?
Love, Fuck (it fits so many purposes) and Symphony

Fanfic Progress Update: Light at the End of the Tunnel and Going Forward (Part 2 of 2)
Part 1: Here
Sorry this took awhile get out, my lying ass said “a few days” last time, but a month is about the same amount of time... right? I’ve been busy trying to finish up a fic I wrote for a very helpful friend as a Christmas gift, which obviously isn’t late as crap now. Besides that, some unavoidable stuff came up (including having my phone containing writing notes totally crap out on me, internet issues, oh and almost becoming homeless because my landlord jacked up rent a bunch without notice, forcing me to try to sell my plasma and to scramble for money. That was fun. But that’s a whole other story).
I hope you’ll understand that real life troubles have to take priority. I know, it’s always excuses with me, sorry. I wish I could control my life and not have all this shit constantly come up too.
Okay, now that my customary pathetic excuses are out of the way let’s get down to business! First up? Fic progress updates! But PREPARE FOR AN ONSLAUGHT OF WORDS! (as if that’s anything new).
The Bonds That Never Break: The last piece of the “Birthday” chapters (which were originally supposed to be one but got split because all these issues) has had some progress (maybe 1/4 of the way) and won’t be a difficult undertaking finishing it up since I know what I want to do, but... Honestly I've hit a major roadblock with the fic beyond this point. My ideas for original stuff are coming up empty and simply rewriting the entire plot isn’t my plan (even now I think the ratio is too far skewed for canon content without enough additions of my own).
The problem as I said in my Author’s Notes of the most recent chapter is the format keeps me tied to the canon, which limits my options. I love the idea, but I can’t deny doing a faithful canon rewrite is a pain sometimes. And in the coming chapters my new ideas are pretty much nil beyond a few scattered chunks from the Konoha Crush arc to about halfway through Shippuden.
Side Note: I planned on skipping canon rewriting most of Shippuden. The fights with Akatsuki and such don’t really play into Naruto and Sasuke’s relationship and I’m not interested in doing that much extra legwork beyond the main focus of this fic. I only care about the dorks and their story and elements of the anime that deal with it. So beyond that, we’ll jump a bunch of that and go directly to the end, a new ending where they get together eventually, where everything will be new.
So me being stuck being the case, I MAY skip forward a ways to something more solidly planned and thought out, and come back later to fill in the gap. Maybe to the point after the ending where everything is my own creation so we can see the dorks repairing their relationship and just making out like they SHOULD have done from the start. We’ll see what happens. I’d be very interested in hearing reader’s opinions, maybe I’ll set up a poll to see what you you think.
I REALLY think I need to put this on hold for a while and watch the anime start to finish, to help inspire me and bring back my passion. I love these guys but over the last year and a half my interest has faded. I need to get back into the ship and reignite those feelings I first had when I started the show so I can channel that into better chapters.
The Horny Canine Boys of the Hidden Leaf Village: Having trouble with this one too. To put it in semi-simple terms, I know what I want in chapter A and chapter C, but connecting them together with chapter B is causing me issues. Haven’t started the next chapter yet (technically the conclusion to the most recent one, since I broke that up because I wasn’t finished and had gone so long without updates) but I do know what it will involve and have plenty of notes so it shouldn’t take TOO long. That being said, from there I’m not sure what to do. I might skip forward and do chapters later on in the story first since I have a clearer idea of what I want them to be. This fic is mostly porn without plot so it’s not like skipping around would matter that much, but it’s still pretty frustrating. Probably going to make a poll for this one too, to get reader’s opinions regarding to skip or not.
Dogs Keep it in the Family: Some progress on finishing up the update I cut short, mainly need to assemble all the parts and ideas together into a cohesive whole. So not too much work. The problem with this one is mainly issues of quality I have with it, content not meeting my expectations. I have plenty of notes and a few more chapters plotted out, it’s mainly just finding the occasions where I can get some good writing done. That aside there’s also a lot of questions beyond the first couple chapters of what I want to include that I’m not sure about. I need to think more about this one.
The Unorthodox Journey of a Pokemon Breeder Boy: The next chapter of the Charizard segment is roughly half way done. But I pushed this out way too soon mainly because I was so sick of it being constantly on my “To-do list” in an in-progress state during months and months of interruptions. Going forward though I’m not really sure what I want to do with it; I simultaneously have this grand vision, but an abnormal lack of concrete ideas for new chapters. I’ve had some little sparks of inspiration and prompts, but beyond that I’m just not feeling it flow into a greater idea.
Here’s my planned schedule for this round of updates. Thing’s could change, but I’ll make a notice if they do.
1. Untitled Inuyasha fic; Koga/Ginta/Hakkaku threesome. This is a gift for a friend I’ve been trying to finish for weeks now
2. The Bonds that Never Break. Last segment of the Birthday chapter
3. The Horny Canine Boys of the Hidden Leaf Village. Next half of the Dogs Will Play chapter. This one has the least recent update (and is by far my most read fic) so I might push it ahead.
4. Dogs Keep it in the Family. Last chunk of the Mother’s Stern Hand chapter
5. The Unorthodox Journey of a Pokemon Breeder Boy. Second half of the Charizard segment
Next are details of my plans going forward. It’s lengthy (it’s ME after all) but important so I’d recommend checking it out. Long story short: After updating each of my current fics, I’m temporarily switching over from the large projects above to one-shots for a time.
But I’ll still be writing and I’m not dropping any of those big fics! I just need a break from the intensive work they require.
On to other matters. If you’ve read my other insanely long updates (if you have you’re a trooper) you’ll know I haven’t been having a great time for a long while. If not, check Part 1 or older Progress Updates for more info. Long story short, I’m completely worn out from endless months and months of bullshit. Even though its FINALLY quieted down now, I still need a break.
You might say, “But you’ve been on hiatus for months!” That was because I could never get a night without fist fights or drunk parties or literal death threats being screamed all hours. That hiatus was because I couldn’t focus, because I was in a stressful situation and had no real alternative.
Now I’m saying I need some mental health time, a break from scrambling between fics that went without updates or had half finished chapters as compensation for that utter nonsense, trying to catch up and failing to get back to normal because of it. I went straight from that atmosphere into rapidly trying to get everything back up to speed, never taking a breather and celebrating my freedom. I need to take a few steps back and gather myself, actually breathe easy without fears of drunk assholes trying to break in to people’s apartments, before I jump back into things.
Because of all that crap, I had to make do with putting out lazy and poorly constructed work. It made me feel like a shitty writer and that I was letting readers down. I can’t express how awesome people who stuck by patiently waiting for updates, understanding I wasn’t in a great place, really are. But not doing my best made me feel like I wasn’t meeting expectations of people who had been so nice. Yes it’s just fanfiction, maybe I’m getting dramatic, but still.
I’m so sick of putting out half-assed or incomplete chapters and fics. Rushing from one to another, scrambling to make updates that aren’t complete or as polished as I would like, leaving this trail of disappointment behind me. I look at what I’ve produced lately and I’m just so deeply unhappy with the quality. Most of that was the horrible situation I was in, but now it’s my haste, like I’m trying to do 5 things at once to catch up now that things are okay and none end up great. I appreciate dearly readers supporting me and being understanding all this time. But when you KNOW you can do better and aren’t meeting your own expectations it’s very frustrating. I take my writing, even if it IS only fanfiction, seriously. I feel a commitment to making the best chapters for people who enjoy what I do.
These big projects are so exhausting, so much work tweaking them just right. All the effort and time I spend has just worn me out. It’s gotten to the point that I’m starting to resent working on them, it feels like an obligation. I rush through stuff trying to make everyone happy and in the end my work suffers. It’s tough to make good stuff when it feels like a chore. And that’s never a good mentality to have when writing. I’m not doing my best work when it’s not fun.
Add to that the fact that my notes are an ABSOLUTE CLUSTER FUCKING MESS. Bits and pieces of stories saved in Google Docs, on my phone, and written in spirals, scattered everywhere. There are things for both Canine Boys and Bonds that I didn’t write down when I was breezing through work that I have now forgotten in my haste to churn out dwindling chapters and struggle with all the bullshit that had overwhelmed my life. That’s a big problem.
For example. In Canine Boys I know what I want to do with chapters 5 and 7, but my notes on 6 are paltry and I have since forgotten what I wanted to do. Problematic, even if it is just porn.
And there are pieces to the planned ending of Bonds that are hazy and difficult to remember because of the time that has passed, mental stress, and lack of organization. I need to get things in order first thing.
No joke, when I look at all my future plans and mess of notes, sometimes I get micro-panic attacks. Because there’s just SO MUCH to do, SO MUCH I need to plan and write, and oh god what did I forget this time, ugh I can’t figure out how to move on and do the next chapter, I can’t remember what good thing I planned for this and I’m disappointing my readers!!! ect. It’s truly overhauling sometimes. And it’s not pleasant or an effective way of writing. I need to get this mess sorted out, lay back and have some brainstorming to fix all those plot and continuity issues.
As if that wasn’t enough, my phone had loads of good things saved on it, ideas for both Bonds and Canine Boys that were GREAT and necessary to moving the stories forward. Well a few days ago it totally crapped out and I can’t access it. Losing the notes saved on my phone has left me pretty bummed. It’s like a knife in the heart. Because I had SO. MANY. GOOD. IDEAS. ON. THERE. And the thought of them just gone makes me just want to give up because I worry I won’t ever come up with something to match and replace all that was lost.
So yeah, I need to take a step away from these big works. All that being said, I’m not on hiatus anymore. More like semi-hiatus. I’m taking a break from “serious” writing, from these huge projects (all 4 current fics would count) and switching over to some smaller one shots in the meantime. I need time to recoup and rest and actually celebrate my newfound peace and quiet without deadlines. I want to work for a while with worrying about timely updates or letting readers down with quality issues. I’m going to take a breather, regain my confidence, organize my disaster notes, and come back strong, RATHER than keep limping along as I have been.
SO, once I make one more update to each of those 4 fics, I’ll be putting them off to the side for a while and focusing on simpler one shots. Hopefully people will check those out too, it’s still me and my style, just smaller (and a friend joked that I don’t do small projects. A one shot for me is like 10-20k words).
After these updates, which in all honesty won’t be my greatest work, not that I’ve been excelling for a while, I am DONE doing shoddy unfinished work. No more.
Once these chapters are out I’ll be shifting to one shots for a temporary cool down so I can gather my thoughts and organize my ideas. This should mean when I come back to these the quality is better, my inspiration is restarted, and I can get back on track writing fluidly instead of struggling.
I have no idea how long this period of smaller works could last. I would estimate anywhere between 3-9 months, since I want a more long term period of separation. Too much focus and worrying has made dealing with them tedious, I just don’t want to have to worry about them for a bit.
As you can see from teh Future Ideas section of my Masterlist I have LOOOTS of ideas. A good number of WIPs were recently inspired by my friend Ren and his beautiful, dirty mind. No I am not working on all those works in the Future Ideas at the same time, this is just a list of ideas that have popped into my head over time. Some may eventually be dropped if I can’t work them properly, but I do have a good chunk of progress already done on a number of those, while others have a few paragraphs written, and some are pretty much a premise and a few sentences.
Do not expect all those to be finished soon. This is a VERY VERY long term look at my plans. Like, over the few years or more probably, knowing how slow I write and how annoyingly perfectionist I am. I will likely shift priorities around between all these as new ideas inspire me or old fics require attention, but from now on I plan on trying to focus the bulk of my attention on 2 or 3 projects at once. Sort of like an assembly plant; one fic in pre-production, one in the process of being built, and one getting the final touches. That way I can churn things out more efficiently. I think that's a much better way to balance all my fics than rushing to and fro manically.
DO NOT WORRY! Just because I have all these future plans doesn’t mean I’m abandoning any of my current fics; Bonds that Never Break, Canine Boys, Dogs Keep it in the Family, and Journey of a Pokemon Breeder Boy will still get attention and I have plenty of thoughts, notes, and plans for those going forward. This list of fic ideas is just a glimpse into my thought process and future plans, in addition to somewhere I can keep readers updated with my priorities (I’ll make updates here as well).
I know what you’re probably thinking. “Oh great, more fics you won’t update on time.” Or “Perfect, the one I like is being pushed aside by this new stuff.” Remember this semi-hiatus is only temporary. Most of the ideas I have in mind are one shots. And they aren’t as intensive as my current works, they’re a much needed break so I can refocus and collect ideas for the major projects. I’m not abandoning ANYTHING, NONE of my fics are getting dropped. I’m just taking a more long term view of things so I can stay in shape.
I’m deeply sorry if some people don’t want to deal with that and jump ship, I completely understand your frustration. I fully expect to lose some readers, much as that pains me. But most importantly I need to do what’s right for me.
There’s a saying, “The candle that that burns twice as bright burns half as long.” I’m at that point. I don’t want to burn bright with a few good chapters and end up burning myself out before really finishing anything.

Measuring Me: Goal Setting
For as long as I can remember I’ve been a goal oriented person. However it wasn’t until last year when I was working with my life coach that I got into the habit of writing and reflecting on them. We had weekly and daily goal exercises, I’ve maintained the weekly goal setting and reflection practice. The great thing about writing and record your goals is that you can go back to read them! So here’s a look at my very first weekly goal writing session on July 1, 2018, prompts in bold and my reflection a year later in italics.
Make a list of 10-15 goals you would like to achieve THIS WEEK. Make them positive, present tense, and specific. Remember these are goals for the week, not months from now. So think of these as the smallest action steps that will drive you FORWARD the quickest. This is about setting yourself up for a win. 1. Log my overtime work hours to prepare to present to my boss at the end of peak season - DID, having comp time in the fall helped me make myself, my goals, Measuring Life a priority 2. Add google analytics to my website - DID 3. Categorize tumblr blog posts - DID 4. Work out at least 4 times - Likely Did, still track workouts 5. Share my blog/instagram with 2 more people I know in real life - DID, still continue to share 6. Check in with my graphic designer friend regarding my new logo/visual brand - DID, launched the logo on NYE 7. Pick up new chromebook - DID, having a computer that isn’t my “work” computer has also helped give me separation 8. Buy and set paper planner and set up a google calendar for my personal life/side hustle - DID, this was a game changer more on that below 9. Buy a bulletin board, note books, office supplies for home office - DID, however only used the home office for a few months since we started using the guest room for AirBNB in October 10. Post 1 video of me on Measuring Life accounts - Did it in August, I post video on occasion, but despite my broadcast journalism degree I prefer writing when it comes to being vulnerable 11. Listen to at least 2 of Dan's podcast episodes - DID, still keeping current on his podcasts and other social media channels for continued inspiration and motivation 12. Rewatch the portion of last week's bonus call where I had my talk time with Dan - DID, watching myself dig and be vulnerable on a video call was odd, but also beautiful. I’ve re-watched a few recording video calls where I’ve gotten emotional and I learned to give myself some grace and understand that change happens when you stop doing the things you’ve always done - in my case being extremely guarded and private 13. Journal at least 3 times this week - Likely Did, I try and write in my paper journal weekly, but such is life sometimes it more often or less often, but there hasn’t been too much of a lapse between writing since I got back to my journaling practice
Which is the one goal that will help all of the others happen? Buy and set paper planner and set up a google calendar for my personal life/side hustle.
For too long I relied on my work outlook calendar to keep all my things, but I really need to separate work from home. As a long time paper journal person, I’ve come to find my paper planner as another type of journal, especially after I made the switch to a passion planner in January 2019. I still can’t get into google calendar, but I use google docs to track all my side hustles (pet sitting, AirBNB, fitness instructor) including dates and income generation to keep everything in order, but also to keep a catalog/record.
What has to happen for these goals to be done? I need to make the time to get to the stores to pick up/purchase items. I need to make the time to set up a calendar as well as have focused time in my office to do so.
Making time was the key, which really means making me a priority. I tend to make everything else a priority, work, other people, social media, television, etc. I still have to actively choose my goals and dreams when it comes to my time. My people pleasing/fixer tendencies will always be there, but for me the awareness is key.
Why are these goals so important to you? I want a public medium to share my story of trauma, failures, successes and connect with others with similar stories. I felt so much shame and isolation over the years for just being me and I'm learning how to break through that and I think the sooner people can push through the shame and isolation the better for them and for all.
This is still true, I came into this my coaching program at a crossroads and a place of self-loathing. I’ve learned to love myself including all my flaws and defects of character (a line from my 12 step program). I still want to share what I’ve overcome, but now I’m more focused on the present and the future. Living in the present isn’t always something I’m very good at, but I’m trying to live less and less in the past.
What would you gain by achieving these goals? I would be vulnerable, but living authentically and building connections with people - both the people I know, think I know, or have yet to know.
This has been one of the highlights of the past year, developing deeper relationships with people and meeting new people who I have connected with on a deep level. I’ve also started to let go of the relationships that are no longer serving me.
What risks will you have to take by achieving these goals? Being vulnerable and open to judgment. Reducing my day job hours/stress levels.
I did these things and no one died! If people are judging me that’s fine, but it hasn’t been something I’ve seen or heard and honestly at this point if I did read or hear something negative I know I’d be okay because I have enough people lifting me up. When it comes to work, the work never ends. It’s about priorities and focus. I know I’ve set more attainable work goals as opposed to pushing myself harder than what is expected which has been a previous pattern. I take my lunch hour, I leave at 5 unless there is a meeting or program that requires me to stay. I’ve taken my sick and vacation days on top of comp time.
What will get in the way of these goals? Procrastination or trying to do too much too soon and therefore getting overwhelmed. Not managing my time or wasting time.
THIS, this still gets in my way. I am way more aware, but I still love the rush that comes with procrastination or being too ambitious.
Why haven't you achieved these goals already? What stopped you before? Time - I tend to run full speed ahead doing 10,000 things at once and burning the candle at both ends or I'm laaaaaaaaaaazy and have the motivation to do anything.
This is tied to the last one, I am still very much an all or nothing kind of person. My planner helps me see this a bit more, so I actually try to schedule in “nothing” time. Ultimately I aim for more balance and alignment in a week, but more likely than not in any given month I have 3 crazy busy weeks and then a really chill low key week. I’ve learned not to feel guilty for “lazy bones” weekends as I’ve called them.
What will you do differently now? Since last September I began managing my time better: actually taking my 1 hour lunch break to workout/walk/meet someone for lunch, setting a Fitbit alarm at 4:40pm each work day so I could wind down for the day and actually leave the office at 5pm. I packed my gym clothes the night before and changed before leaving work so I could go right from the office to the gym. I really found my stride in doing this from January 2018-mid June 2018. Currently in my intense peak work season, but want to quickly get back on track as soon as mid-July gets here.
Yes, all of these things I’ve kept up with these good habits and thankfully after my peak summer season last year I was able to get back on track. I’m looking forward to getting back on track after this summer’s peak season.
Is there anything I can do now to make achieving these goals easier?  The biggest thing in my control is sleeping. I can't function off 5 hours of actual sleep and since I currently need to be up at 5:30am most days I need to make sure I'm in bed by 10pm. I also need to continue to journal/blog to stay accountable.
Sleep hygiene has been such a priority for me this year. Starting in September I began charging my phone away from my bed. I first started charging it in another room - where I could still hear the alarm, but as I got better about not “needing” the phone next to the bed I now charge it across the bedroom, but still not next to the bed. I also keep it face down so I don’t see the screen light up from the bed. I strive for 8 hours of sleep each night, however, in January I stopped wearing my Fitbit to track my sleep because I found the data to no longer be helpful. I often would wake up feeling refreshed, but if the fitbit data didn’t back it up then I’d mentally feel less refreshed. As mentioned personal accountability also is really important for my goal setting and self-care. Writing my weekly goals and reflecting on them each week, managing my time with a paper planner, weigh-ins/measurements, budgeting and finances, etc all of this has made a huge difference and my momentum is only growing.
I am thankful to be where I am today and excited to see where I’ll be a year from now!

Kari’s Supernatural Halloween Challenge
Autumn is just around the corner and autumn means Halloween is near too. This challenge is all about the All Hallow’s Eve and the creepy, scary, awesome stuff that comes with it.
The prompts are all quotes from classic or silly horror movies - I listed the movie too in case you wanna draw inspiration from the plot too. You don’t have to at all. You just have to use the dialogue prompt somewhere in the fic. How is up to you. On to the more detailed rules - read carefully!
Due Date: November 9th
Word min: 500 words
Word Max: 5k words
Style: It can be a drabble, one shot or beginning of a series. Do not put in in the middle of an ongoing series since I plan on reading them and don’t want to read 10 parts of something to understand the entry.

Not necessarily but Bonus points if it is.

NaNoWriMo - Can We Be Honest For a Second?
You are only doing NaNo for one of three reasons:
You need to get into a daily writing habit and writing 1666 words a day for a month is a good way of developing that habit.
You need to get a big chunk of writing done in a hurry and 50,000 words in a month ain't a full novel for most genres, but it ain't too shabby either.
Your friends are threatening to steal your fuzzy socks and your chocolate stash if you don't join.
See, the 50,000 words you get when you win NaNoWriMo aren't the prize, they're the byproduct. Winning NaNoWriMo means spending the month of November turning yourself into a better writer. And I want to help you be a winner.
There are pages and pages of writing advice on the internet. You could read books on writing, and nuance, and metaphor. If you're lucky you'll spend your entire life reading great books and learning from other authors, but no amount of learning is going to help you get off the starting block and to writing a book unless you know where to start. So that's what this post is about: how to prep for NaNoWriMo.
Mid-October you need to set aside a day for NaNoWriMo planning. You're going to be doing your research, basic plotting, and some very simple outlining. If you're a Plotter who needs to have all the details written down, fine, add more. If you're a Pantster (like me!) you'll find this method isn't overwhelming and leaves lots of room for improvisation. Once you've got your date set grab something to make notes on and give yourself five hours to work... and yes it's perfectly fine to do this in fifteen-minute increments over the month of October. You're busy, and that's normal. :)
Step 1: Write the elevator pitch for your novel.
Don't get hung up on finding an original plot or the perfect pitch right now. Just pick an idea that tickles your imagination and run with it. The fact that you are writing it will make it unique. Every person is different, and so is every story!
In two sentences or less write what you're going to write your book about. It doesn't need to be perfect, you just need to verbalize it somehow.
If you don't know what to write about look for inspiration in art work, online story prompts, the NaNoWriMo Adopt A Plot forum, or on Tumblr where the Out Of Context D&D people give anyone with a pulse an urge to write fantasy.
Can't decide on just one plot? No problem! Plan them all out. Start writing whichever catches your fancy in November and write the others next year.
Step 2: Use the Dime Novel Formula
This is 100% stolen from the author of the Doc Savage novels Kenneth Robeson (Lester Dent) and he deserves full credit. Partial credit goes to British author Tim Dedopulos who wrote a NaNoWriMo post in 2010 entitled How To Write A Novel In Three Days. We're using a modified version of his method....
Lester Dent said every good novel needed four things:
A new way to kill someone
A new thing for the villain to want
A new place
A menace that threatens your hero at every turn.
Write down your four things.
Step 3: You Need Four Plot Twists
No one likes a book where they can guess the ending on page one. It's boring. Plot twists set in the right place along the course of the book will give your reader a wild ride that keeps them reading long past bedtime. Plan on at least four plot twists.
Plot twist #1 comes in the first quarter of the book. "You're a wizard, Harry." "I found a wardrobe that leads to a kingdom of snow and my brother ate the evil queen's Turkish Delight!" etc. You get the idea.
Plot Twist #2 comes about 40% of the way through the book, this one's the gut punch. The hero loses something, they're betrayed, something horrible happens and at all cost, you must leave the readers thinking there is no way your hero can ever find a happy ending after this. If you're George R. R. R. Martin this is where you kill [spoiler redacted], you soulless fiend.
Plot Twist #3 comes at the climax of the story, when the fate of the universe hangs by a thread, and then suddenly PLOT TWIST! something amazing happens. Harry comes back from the dead. Loki really didn't kill Thor. Mulan shoots Shan Yu with a firework and the Emperor bows to her.
Plot Twist #4... and I know you're scratching your head here... this one comes in the last pages of the book. The villain confesses they did it all for the love of the hero, the hero pulls the sword from the stone and finds out it's plastic, the long-lost princess realizes she rescued the wrong kingdom! This is the very final twist that keeps the book alive after the last page is turned. It may seem diabolic, especially if you're not writing a series, but it lets the reader believe the characters will live on and have more adventures even after the book ends, and that's important.
Step 4: You Need Three Villains
Early in my writing career, I wrote several novels that were great except the pacing and tension seemed almost nonexistent. It wasn't until I wrote a book with a well fleshed out villain that I realized my early novels suffered from a lack of antagonist. Save yourself some tears and define your villains up front.
Who is your Primary Antagonist? This is the villain that shows up one page one and gives our hero grief but who may not be a villain all along. If you're writing an Enemies-To-Lovers romance this antagonist will wind up being a hero in the end.
Who is your Second Antagonist? The Middle Villain is the one who comes in the center of the book (hence the name) and who the hero didn't see as a problem beforehand. Either this antagonist was a friend before and betrayed the hero, or they become a villain because of the hero's actions in achieving the first quest of the book. This antagonist carries a lot of weight and deals the hero the most setbacks. They're the one that drives the hero to the moment of despair and strips them of everything (which is why a betrayer makes such a good second villain). While dealing with the second antagonist the hero stumbles into a realization of who the bigger villain is. If you're writing a series with One Big Villain driving the series (think Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews or Star Wars where the Emperor is the Big Bad) you'll have the hero defeat a series of Middle Villains in each book and only face The One Big Bad in the final book. If you're writing a series driven by Hero's Choice this second villain will bounce between being a villain and being a temporary ally (think the Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs or Star Trek where Romulans and Klingons are sometimes enemies and sometimes friends). The other series option is the No Hero series like Game of Thrones where everyone is an antagonist and a protagonist in their own mind.
Who is the Third Antagonist? The Big Bad, the villain whose presence is felt but unknown throughout the book. In a series, you may not see this person until the end of the series. The best part about this kind of antagonist is it invites readers to reread so they can catch the earlier clues. You really can save this villain for the very end, or at least the last 1/3 of the book. They usually appear around the hero's Moment Of Despair, when the hero has lost all hope, friends, support, and belief in themself. This is the villain that defines the hero. Because the hero looks up from the mud and blood and despair and says, "I cannot let you do this. I cannot let you win even if I lose everything." The decision to fight this villain when all hope is lost, at great personal sacrifice, is what makes an ordinary person a hero. And because the hero is coming from such a low point, beaten and fragile, their victory is all the more sweet in the end.
Whew! Got all that? Okay. Good. Take a breather because the next section is there we're going to tackle the nitty gritty. You ready?
Step 5: Building The World
Do you know what derails the most NaNoWriMo novelists? The research. They pause to look up a name, or find a place to set a scene, and then they're lost down the rabbit hole of research and you find them wandering bookstores in mid-January wondering why people are hanging Valentine's Day decorations. It's sad, really. And you, smarty that you are, are going to dodge that bullet by naming everything right now!
Make a list of 25 female names and 25 male names for your book. You can do it by culture or race if you need to, but get it done before November 1st. And, remember, if you hate the name November 15th you can change it in edits. That's why we have the Search-Replace function.
Make a list of all the modes of transport in your book. If you have spaceships or sailing vessels make a list of names for them too. Ten minimum. More is better. Pick a theme if you're having trouble, like naming all the ships in your fleet after minerals: Jasper, Feldspar, Malachite...
Make a list of all the places you might set a scene. Name the cafes, name the fields, name the forests, name the nebulas, name the schools, name the rooms. You may not use them all but they'll be there if you need them.
Make a list of all your props: weapons, clothes, whatever will be on stage goes right here. If it helps, pretend you're planning a play. Picture what you might need. And feel free to add more when you start writing. These lists are guidelines only, you can use them or lose them to your heart's content.
Step 6: The Setting Thesaurus
This is going to take a bit of time, so plan ahead. What you need to do here is follow the excellent example set by Becca and Angela and make a thesaurus for all the scenes.
Honestly, this is more for the Plotters who need to know everything. Pantsters, write five or six key words to describe each place, one for each major sense. If you have more or have something you really want to see in that place, scribble it down.
Bookmark the Emotion Thesaurus and Setting Thesaurus in case of emergencies in November.
Step 7: Time For The Math
NaNoWriMo is meant to be thirty days of steady writing, but let's be realistic, unless you're life is perfect you won't be writing all thirty days. Look at your calendar right now and decide how many days you can write. For me is about 24 days in November. I take weekends off to spend time with my kids and I'll be too busy cooking on Thanksgiving to write.
Grab a calculator. Divide 50,000 by the number of days you have to write. This number is your target word count if you want to have 50,000 words at the end of the month.
50,000 isn't a full novel for adult genres and most YA. If you really want a novel in a month you need to do that math with 75,000 words. I'm sorry.
Curse yourself. Cry. Google WRITE OR DIE. Thank the creators of WRITE OR DIE for all they have done for you. Bookmark WRITE OR DIE. Tell your family and friends you love them, and then go buy some note cards.
Step 8: The Dread Outline
This trick I actually picked up from a fellow Critique Circle writer my first year participating in NANOWRIMO. She said she spent Halloween night handing out candy and writing scenes on a note card. One card per writing day with all the scenes she needed to write.
Let's pretend you have 25 writing days in November and you want 50,000 words. That's 2000 words on each of your writing days, or one scene per day.
Pick out 25 cards and write one or two sentences describing a scene you want to write on each card.
Put a small sticker or check mark on Plot Twist days and mark the days on your calendar. You'll probably be writing a plot twist on the 7th, 14th, 21st, and 28th of November.
Rearrange, discard, or rewrite anything that doesn't seem to make sense.
REMEMBER! This is only the rough draft. It's meant to be rough. You are aiming to write something ugly. Everything will be smoothed and polished in edits. These cards can be changed at any time, they're really here to be your countdown clock to victory. No panicking allowed.
Step 9: Write Like A Pro
Can I share a teeny tiny little secret with you? There's not an author alive who knows what they're doing. That blank page is just as blank for you as it is for your favorite author. Every person is unique. Every person will write differently and in different ways. There is no wrong way to be an author.
Sit down.
Write.
All the planning you did, that's there for reference. All those lists and names and plot twists were written down so your subconscious could have time to play with the ideas and present you with the scenes when it's time to write. On November 1st all you have to do is show up and write.
If you get stuck, check your notes.
If you go running down a new avenue just make sure to connect with your plot twist.
Never abandon your villains, they're what makes your hero a hero.
Write.
Keep writing.
Don't give up.
Have fun.
