I am curious, what is Dolls of new albion? I am intrigued

the dolls of new albion is a steampunk-inspired opera. it is amazing i listened to it this afternoon and it has rewired my brain

it is split into four acts, the first following annabel mcalistair, who- because of an extremely unhealthy obsession- brings a guy called jasper back from the dead, putting him in the body of a doll.

although she eventually realises that this was not a good thing (dead people do not like being put in doll bodies and they really do not like being brought back from the afterlife), the rest of the acts follow her ancestors as the city of new albion is changed dramatically several times as a result of the dolls, starting with annabel's son discovering and recreating her work, then continuing on as each ancestor is extremely Not Normal about jasper in their own unique ways.

its got really interesting themes of objectification, repeating cycles, and the difference between how we view something and how it truly is.

the characters are all little bastards and i love them each one of them

there are a few recordings of perfomances online (including one with tim meredith. as in gunpowder tim the mechanisms. playing annabel's son edgar), or bc its an opera (no dialogue only songs) u could just listen to the album. its less than an hour and a half, so a fairly short watch/listen time

its the first of a tetraology of operas about new albion. i have not listened to the others yet but i know they will only make me less normal

My hottest take (and I genuinely do believe this) is that most trans women pass perfectly well. They just don't pass as supermodels. Every "nonpassing" trans woman I've ever met looks like your average midwestern cis woman.

frankly, the people whose kneejerk reaction to bisan asking for a global strike form the 21st-28th is to say that it takes years to organize a general strike are really unhelpful! no one is saying otherwise, but palestine will be a smoking crater if we all wait for years to do anything - bisan is asking us to do something now. Like are we only supposed to do something if we can do it perfectly??? At some point it’s a valid critique about the work that goes into social movement, and at another point I feel like some people are just trying to absolve themselves from not putting any effort into observing a week of economic inaction.

like idk! I get it, okay! People have bills to pay that don’t magically go away for a strike, we don’t have nearly enough social infrastructure in place to support people to fully stop going to work for a week. But fuck, dude! Stop immediately responding in such a defeatist way! Cut out unnecessary purchases! Try to shop local! Put more effort into promoting Palestinian voices online! Attend a protest, call a local rep, do something!

The only bad thing about Gem and Joel's team up is, well, they actually have the means and the skill and the luck to do it.

But, you know, if a team makes it to the end, there can only be one.

And we've seen that except... they aren't the type to give the win to the other, they worked too hard, too proud of their skills, and it would feel like a disservice to the other to try and hand it off.

They aren't the type to sling bloody punches at each other in a cactus ring, begging for apologies and singing their sorrows.

They aren't the type to promise an honored deal with crossed fingers only to turn and twist and laugh maniacally as they betray due to the desperation of time ticking inevitably away

They aren't the type to twist bitterly and finally end up together, one reaching only finally so they aren't alone for the other to throw it away in what they think is what is wanted

They aren't the type to dance around and ignore hearing that the other doesn't want the win, ignoring it because they don't want to be alone only for the other to die silently without realizing and left wondering

Either of them could win. Statistically Joel has beaten Gem more than she has him, but that doesn't mean she can't win, Joel gets flustered easy. Joel tends to get more reckless and take the long shot that pays off, but Gem tends to flounder if caught off guard.

I think, if they are at the end there will be no promises or honor duels or gifted or taken wins, I think they'll just lunge. Not like a desperate wolf bites, but as an acknowledgement to who they are as people, bloodthirsty and fun and wanting to win. Maybe they will, at best, mention fight club and maybe negotiate the same rules, leather or no armor with wooden swords, but this is not an honor battle of forced apart partners nor is it a grief stricken apology to make the game end.

And I think one of them will die laughing as they go. Maybe disappointed but proud because they almost got the other and they did it together
