the conversation around bipolar disorder in the context/comparison of adhd could rly be improved. i was diagnosed with adhd before bp, so i’m obviously going to have a specific experience influencing my opinion compared to a bipolar person w/o adhd, but ppl make bp sound downright terrifying in a way that has only been detrimental to me learning more abt it (and by extension, myself)

one of the first things i heard abt adhd + bp in the same conversation was in an educational video. they made the comparison that being diagnosed with adhd is like being told you have strep throat, while being diagnosed with bipolar is like being told you have throat cancer. this person did not have adhd btw

it’s just rly messy and unhelpful to call bipolar a “more extreme” version of adhd bc not only is comparing the severity such a subjective thing (i know ppl with both who say adhd has been harder for them to cope with than bp, for example), but they also have completely different sources and presentations. manic episodes are not heightened mood swings, i get both and i have to tackle them differently

and dgmw, i’m not trying to downplay bipolar symptoms either. there are more cautions that most bp ppl will need to be aware of than someone would for adhd. it’s just that in my experience, they’re so different that it’s hard to compare. i can confine bp to specific episodes. i’ll have to deal with the aftermath ofc, but i can at least be aware when the worst of it is over. adhd is constantly present in every aspect of my life, i have to account for it on the daily. but i’ve seen professionals say that, if you have both, you have to prioritize bipolar. and that is just terrible advice

there’s sm more nuance to this, like how adhd meds can trigger manic episodes, or how adhd is smth you’re born with while bp is (typically) smth that is developed later in life, or how some ppl feel like one is what makes the other worse for them, etc. but i don’t want to speak on too much of these experiences, i’m mostly just kinda bummed it was such a rough beginning when it didn’t have to be

after the vehicle hunt has been a big flop (the few vehicles I was interested in drove terribly on the test drives :( and car salesmen waaaay highballing cars worths which is. A crazy thing to do when I can literally look up the average worth of a car in 2 seconds??) after going to so so many websites and irl dealers. i found a van I really really love the look of and it’s only like an hour away!!
