Songs the Ninjago Fandom is Sleeping on.

Okay so while I do art there's only so much my chronic pain ridden hands can produce and so animatics/animations aren't really in my wheelhouse BUT I have a bunch of ideas and songs that the Ninjago fandom should use + some ideas that yall can totally use (@ me or send them to me though if you do cause I want to see them)

The Songs in question (it's be song-artist btw):

Always Gold-Radical Face: Is literally a perfect song for Wu and Garmadon, like it's literally about two opposite brothers treading wildly different paths like what more could you want

Brutus- The Buttress: Yall please I am begging that someone does something with this song relating to Morro's hatred/jealousy towards Lloyd because this song is absolutely perfect for it! Lines such as "-and if you want I'll call you king but why do I lie awake each night thinking "instead of you it should be me"" and "Please know my actions are not motivated only by envy, I to have a destiny" there are so many more but I'll let yall do the rest of the work (Also you could kinda do it with Wu and Garmadon but ehhhh)

Human Enough- ONR: This could work for multiple of the characters if you ask me but if you ship anyone with Zane or Pixal the song could totally work those two them specifically cause it talks about the singers partner/love interest being "made perfect" and idk we need more Pixal content soooo. Honestly any of the characters that get de-human-ed (for longer than one episode) would do great with this song, like Cole in his ghost arc, Nya after Seabound or Garmadon at like any point in the story. Line examples: "Cause you are made of perfect stars and I was built from broken parts" and "I'm not human enough to love yo right now/ I'm not human enough to cry or cry for" are my personal favorites.

Laplace's Angel (Hurt People? Hurt People!)-Will Wood: Lloyd, Sora or Wu (Specifically the young version of him from the Spinjitzu Brothers books) song about the weight of the world being on your shoulders and not knowing what to do and like the consequences of actions and fun stuff like that

Easier- Crane Wives: Misako, like seriously so many Crane Wives songs work well for this woman because A) her whole attempt to change destiny or B) Her failure as a mother and you know the whole kinda cheating on her husband thing, but this one specifically cause it's a song about leaving someone behind and feeling bad while also not being able to stay. Lyrics such as "If you woke and I was gone from the house that we made our home would it bend yo, break you, overtake your heart?" and "I won't move but I can't stay here. So what the hell am I supposed to do?" and "If I were someone else, would this be easier?"

Stranglers Fig- This could definitely be a Cole (specifically relating to his father and dance backstory) or Kai song, many of the lyrics involve someone being pushed to do more and more and finally snapping because they've done everything they can and there's nothing left but their desire to be better. Lyrics "You bult your kingdom around me, now I'm trapped within your walls and all I want is to be free" and "Climb me to the canopy, higher, higher 'till there's nothing left of me." and "You're the culprit so don't blame me."

WHAT THE HELL GABE'S AJ AU / Epilogue 💫

So erm. Hey jamblr. Here's that au I promised you. It is lacking a name. This is currently a huge HUGE HUGE wip but what I will say is i have had this headworld and story in my brain for a pretty scary amount of time. Now I am making the mature decision and taking a step from imagining animatics in my head to making an actual story!! As of right now, I have very intense artblock, so I'm bringing it upon myself to write for this AU instead!!

This was inspired by probably a lot of stuff, notably FOTS by Greeky and a whole bunch of AJ headcanons I have mashed together into a slightly salty stew.

A delicate feather was carried by the wind from its birthplace and took time to settle as the wrath of the winds sailed it about the sky endlessly. This delicate feather- she, a delicate feather, had lesser expertise with a realm such as this. Despite never having seen it, she had heard innumerable myths and legends about it and had researched Jamaa throughout the ages. As she landed amidst the chaos and apocalypse, she spread the scrolls of her map with two eager wings. She then, excited as can be, soared up and above the lands to look down on it, comparing it to the papyrus in her grasp. Apart from some tiny geographic inaccuracies, she was mostly right about what she thought Jamaa would resemble. Her sole hyperfocus for as long as she had been living was right here in front of her. Her map and other tools of the trade were no longer necessary.

She went by the name Io'lani, and if she had friends, they would undoubtedly refer to her as Lani, but since she didn't, that was that. Her name meant "royal hawk", although she was neither royal nor a hawk. She had been around a very long time but mostly in captivity; her living quarters resided in some sort of third-dimensional space as she watched the centuries go by. Originally, she was created to be a faux offspring for the two guardian spirits to embrace and love as their own, the way parents would cherish a newborn babe, but their heavenly duties consistently got in the way of that. She wasn't necessarily forgotten, neglected, or abused- but her existence was merely an afterthought for the Sky Mother Mira, and barely a thought at all for the (mostly) unaware Zios.

Promptly, as a being of balance, and the product of the two holy deities that brought life to Jamaa, Io'lani's emergence in a time of destruction and despair was foretold in literature and books written by the most fanatical of scholars and theorists.

Io'lani emerged, of course. I just described her descent to you. The problem was that she wasn't quite sure what she was meant to do.

Her eyes darted as she stared at the gloomy surroundings. Buildings once bursting with life had been knocked down and torn apart for materials by scavenging jammers who were desperate to survive. The greenery and plants were now wilted and desaturated. The rivers, now a goopy inkwell. Once there were animals united by friendship, now wicked phantoms united by their desire to destroy and multiply. The hiss of black smoke filled Io'lani's lungs and she coughed, covering her beak with the edges of her mask.

This is not how Jamaa was supposed to be. Where were the cheers and laughter of water slides, movie theatres, and young mammals venturing out into the wild? Where was the happy haven that she had been assured existed? As she floated and landed at different locations, pointing to her whereabouts on the map, she analyzed her positioning with precise craftsmanship.

Crystal Sands' warm, golden shoreline had vanished and been replaced with a gritty, black, and grey substance that was scorching to the touch. Jamaa Township's characteristic swirling pavement was no longer present; instead, a sizable crevice divided the town's center in half. Phantoms emerged from these recesses, spreading their purple muck and cackling maliciously as they advanced to wilt the fauna.

Jamaa was not intended to be like this. Io'lani quietly descended and fell to her knees in front of a violet flag that had been suspended from the arcade's former roof. It had been shredded at the ends, painted with a sinister expression, and pasted all over the lifeless hamlet. The photograph was of the Phantom Queen, or PQ as she liked to be addressed by her subjects, and a message was scrawled in goopy black ink over her portrait.

And this was everywhere, mind you. The phantom propaganda was affixed to masonry and stone throughout the featureless plains. The Queen's vile grin was still present, along with the same stern call to repent. Io'lani scurried desperately and frantically, zipping to each of the wrecked locals on her map and urgently hoping to find at least someplace not entirely defunct. The statue of Zios was gone completely, presumably taken as a trophy by the Queen herself.

She slid against a jagged rock in Balloosh, the place least subject to destruction and where she had initially started her quest. To her knowledge, there was a power within the marsh- a strong power. She could feel the sheer electric of protection in her bones, the blazing blue light shimmering in her peripherals.

She wept silently, her tears ink-black and resembling the slime of the phantoms. Her tears flowed into her wings, and as she trembled and wept, her voice had a pitiful catching. Any sign of goodwill was absent. What's more, a sheer lack of both guardian spirits, ironically not doing a very good job at guarding or keeping up spirits. There was no point in visiting the place she had wanted to for epochs when it was torn and forgotten. No alphas to save the day, except the elder wolf sitting across from her, giving her a sympathetic glare.

Wait.

As she made touch with the blue-gray canine, she gasped and the emerald glint in her eyes resurfaced. Her thoughts searched for why he was so familiar to her until she caught on. This was Greely, first name unknown, the alpha philosopher with an interest in all things macabre. Except it wasn't quite Greely, for this wolf was bruised and had an ear torn, his golden bejeweled accessories cracked and corroded in ash. He looked older than what Io'lani had seen of him in stories, and less well-kept. He had a husky growl in his voice, reaching out an injured paw towards the skittish heron.

"I was hoping I'd... end up stumbling into you." He groaned.

"Do you know me?" Io'lani replied, her voice just above a whisper.

Greely bared his teeth, before turning his head and looking to the side. "I have... heard such things about you. You're the one who's meant to make this hell disappear. Are you deliberately wasting time here?"

Io'lani frowned as Greely raised his voice to her, the confusion and anxiety settling in her stomach. Greely's gaze pierced right through her and was even more intimidating than she had anticipated. Ultimately, she spoke up, clearing her throat and gripping her trusty map defensively in one wing.

"I don't know what exactly I'm meant to do."

Greely paused.

"Shit."

What’s Sammy like in your AUs? (Personality, but appearance in particular,, had an idea floating in my brain about an animation meme)

Saw this ask and I swear I have never speedrun a concept so fast- it must be partially from the art high I’m getting from the animatic. /j

Sammy infodumping below:

I’ve had a rough idea for their design for a while so I’ll try to sum this up as best I can. Sammy in my AUs (and headcanons for in game) was originally an explorer with Nurm. The duo would go and chart new territories, with Sammy being oriented on studying the fauna/flora of biomes and Nurm mapping. Eventually, the two run into Jack and Vos while on a treasure hunt and decide to help out. One successful treasure hunt later and all four become a group, going on adventures and mapping and such. After a few years, Nurm decides to go off and map new locations while the trio go off adventuring.

Sea Temple time oh boy: The trio stumble upon a prismarine gauntlet while spelunking and accidentally open the original “heckmouth.” (The gauntlet doesn’t have the curse of binding, but the heckmouth does pose a great threat.) Eager to find answers on how to close the dangerous pit, they visit the closest village: Mushroom Archipelago. Sammy, used to conversing with Nurm, translates for the group and they deduce that their best bet lies in a Sea Temple nearby. (Not going into too much detail here because I’m saving it for my fic.) Unfortunately things go awry upon entering the guardian room of the temple when Sammy is killed by the guardians and Vos locked away in the room’s traps.

—Petra reminds Jack a LOT of Sammy which is why he is so quick to open up to her and offer to take her on adventures.

—The potion in Sammy’s inventory at the time of her death was given to her by Vos (something to help defeat the elder guardians with like strength or speed.)

Personality:

—very similar to Petra (laid back, group mediator, etc)

—experienced archer and biologist (cartographer too after joining Jack and Vos)

—always carried a journal in her bag filled with sketches of biomes, plants, mobs, etc

—would have loved lush caves if she found one

Design Notes: (may be changed in final reference)

—bandages around hands help with climbing trees (usually to get to a vantage point for shooting)

—cape is very short and is often worn around neck or waist (also her diamond is in the center)

—every bit of me is holding back adding more plants to her apparel

—colors may be changed in her final design, but you’re absolutely free to use them nonetheless

—Hehe also as a little easter egg, for those of y’all who pay close attention to my drawings of Vos, you’ll know he carries leaves in his bag. Yes, that has always been a nod to my Sammy design. I may be slightly in denial that he’s dead, but he always plants to remind himself of her.

I was thinking about my last post about alternate angsty Tournament of Elements ideas...

...and then I remembered this animatic.

Before I go on with my original thought I just got to gush about this video. It's a beautiful, gut wrenching animatic that I just keep returning to. 1:05- 1:15 just- AAAAA! Zane's eyesssss The audio having sirens and echo-y voices, Glacier King picked the audio well! I honestly thought that they added sound effects in or distorted audio cause it's so perfect.

What if Skylor had been in Kai's mind (using the mind element perhaps?) when Kai had the staff - when he was towering over Lloyd - and she whispered in his ear Kill Him Villian Skylor - she betrays her father but not to be on the side of good, but to usurp his power - so SHE can be the most powerful I won't go into the details of what this would look like - especially in an animatic - but the brain worm ya'll

So you probably haven't listened to Khyber Shards, but my brain is there and has been there for a while and since you're an anon I'm not gonna try to tailor this to any shared fandoms.

Also, tbh, my ideas are most heavily concentrated toward the front and back ends of the song.

Everybody knows that the dice are loaded - The players & DM all sitting around a gaming table. On the table, you can see the minis for the PC's, as seen in the prologue.

Everybody rolls with their fingers crossed - One of the players or DM picks up a d4 and rolls it. As they do so, it morphs into the pyramid-shaped floating citadel of the Twelve.

Everybody knows the war is over - We see Soryn walking with the Stryke Force, a group of Deneith guards hovering in the background.

Everybody knows the good guys lost - Daine and Thora look at each other, and briefly we see three other figures around them, with scribbles over where their faces are supposed to be. These three are supposed to represent their team, now dead.

The rest of the stanza as well as the next few stanzas would be dedicated to episodes 2-147 or so, and while I have some vague ideas for what scene goes where, I don't know quite where to place them (aside from under a cut)

Everybody got this broken feeling / Like their father or their dog just died - Something to do with Tommel. Maybe it's the map job, or maybe it's earlier.

Everybody talking to their pockets / Everybody wants a box of chocolates / And a long-stem rose - The Storm Lords discussing the fate of the Stryke Force. If this scene occurs on talking to their pockets, then box of chocolates is Thora rescuing the Stryke Force. If the scene is on box of chocolates, then the prior scene would tie more directly to the Twelve, while the scene after is Thora rescuing the Stryke Force. If the scene is long-stem rose, then there may not be a Thora rescue scene.

Everybody knows that you love me baby - either Pog and Solarka or Shade and Ari.

And everybody knows that it's now or never / Everybody knows that it's me or you - Either the Stryke Force heading over to Blackbriar or the Tommel vs Ari duel.

And everybody knows that you live forever / When you've done a line or two - Either both of Esri's deaths, Esri's first death contrasted with Ari's death (since Erandis brought both of them back), or Ari's deal with the Forgotten Prince contrasted by his deal with the Forgotten Queen. No matter what, Erandis has to be here.

And now we're back to me having a very good idea of pacing.

And everybody knows that the plague is coming - The Stryke Force faces the murderbot, Thora grabs its head, and forces gather near the manor.

Everybody knows that it's moving fast - smashcut of Daine, the Stryke Force, and Demise all making their way through the ziggurat

Everybody knows that the naked man and woman - Ari explains that they were all born with their marks (possibly with some more of the smashcut towards the front end of the lyric)

Are just a shining artifact of the past - Cardaen, with his eye sparkling for effect.

Everybody knows the scene is dead - Cardaen and Ari talk, and Cardaen clutches his head.

But there's gonna be a meter on your bed - As tribute to all the times I have misheard the lyric as "on your head", Demise touches Cardaen's head and casts Greater Restoration on him.

That will disclose - Cul'Sir kills Vadallia. This scene will bleed into the end of the previous lyric, as well, for timing purposes.

What everybody knows - Daine flying everyone back to Stormreach. The scene zooms in on a particular area of Stormreach, where...

And everybody knows that you're in trouble - Thora can be seen limping her way through the streets of Stormreach.

And everybody knows what you've been through - The scene glitches to Thora in a similar pose, back in Blackwheel. For stylization purposes, her face is currently on fire instead of the horrific burns being visible.

From the bloody cross on top of Calvary - Thora is captured by Blackwheel, but there is defiance on her face.

To the beach of Malibu - Glitch cut to Thora in the same pose, but in Stormreach, and there is a look of despair on her face instead.

Everybody knows it's coming apart - While held captive, a look of utter terror crosses Thora's face as Soryn walks into the room.

Take one last look at this sacred heart - Thora's communicator, surrounded by all the messages she has sent after she left the manor with the murderbot head. It's left unclear if she herself was the one to send them.

Before it blows - A panel split four ways between the Stryke Force and Daine. All of them are horrified, and as the lyric continues, each of their sections disappears, revealing the next scene beneath.

Everybody knows - One of two scenes. Either Thora is held at wandpoint, even more heavily injured than she was prior to Everybody knows it's coming apart, or she is fully healed, but her eyes are glowing a solid color as she points a sword at them.

How long have you been working on each WIP? How do you plan your WIPs (timeline, outline, seat of your pants, divine intervention, etc...)? Have you ever regretted inserting a character or plot point but ended up loving it, or vice versa?

How do you plan your WIPs?

i'll start with the planning question because my system is kind of a mess.

i've learnt from my mistakes and i now let wips slowcook for a long time. and i mean years of just having the characters and ideas floating in my brain. from time to time i get bursts of inspiration for a scene or a plot point or a character interaction and i make sure to write it down to remember later, then back to vibing. these bursts of inspiration happen for different reasons: i see a quote or art that reminds me of the wip, i myself draw something related to it and somehow make a connection i hadn't previously, or the famously used i listened to a song and now there's an animatic in my head

once i actually sit down to plan and seriously work on a wip i have a general idea of the plot and the important beats i want to hit, even if the path is not too clear yet. for púlsar i had a summary of the plot before i started to write. once i did, i kept on expanding it and changing things as details i introduced in the chapters snowballed into plot points or different sub-beats of the plot. i also started to plan some chapters ahead with bulletpoints and then summaries of the essence of the chapter with dialogue bits i came up with on ahead or descriptions or thoughts (all this on the same google doc) (once the plot diverged too much from what i'd previously outlined i made a break and separated the planning by versions) (also most summaries had notes like "check sketchbook" or "messages you sent to x friend on [date]")

i don't think this method will change much for the rest of my wips, with the exception of UP, which im also planning on notion because the timeline is A Mess (but that's kind of the point so it's fine)

Have you ever regretted inserting a character or plot point but ended up loving it, or vice versa?

inserting is a strong word because it implies i have any kind of power over what happens on the story when the characters just decide to go their own way ignoring everything else. i haven't any regrets about this happening, because, in the end, it's the path the story had to follow, but i do wonder what could have been

How long have you been working on each WIP?

Cor Vitae: came up with it around january 2017 and worked on it for a year and a halfish (i restarted it a couple of times), haven't touched it since but i think about the lore and world from time to time (and draw the ocs) (pfp is one of them)

Ástral's Universe: (what comprises project:némesis and co) came up with it september 2016, and also worked on it for around two years before stopping. like with CV, i still think about it and draw the kids from time to time

Púlsar: even tho i came up with it around 2017, the story as it is now didn't happen until 2018, and i didn't start to work on it really until 2019 when i decided it was going to be the topic for my Treball de Recerca. i wrote the spanish version summer 2020 and autum 2022 i decided to translate it into english at the same time i revise it (which im still working on)

Untitled Project: UP as a whole wasn't officially a thing until spring 2019, but i've had some ocs and a vague idea of a plot for some years (as far back as 2017. i was. busy that year aparently) i've been slowly working on the story and characters since then, mainly summer 2019 and summer 2021 and 2022 (and what i'll focus on once púlsar's done)

Tales from beyond: my newest wip! created autum 2019. i just mostly draw the characters, it's not one of my priority wips to work on

So this stream I got a bit confused with what was going on with the whole spiel with schlatt and dream, and I dont actually think theres a traitor. However if there was one why not niki ya know? I mean, he kept saying how it would be way more unexpected than eret in the independance war, and literally everyone so far has been thought of as a potential traitor to pogtopia,, except well,, why not niki? She also had this letter to her "dear friend" that sounded like a new turn for her character and idk man why not?

Alright I’m a very texting type of person and you’ve got my started on my hyperfixation here we go-

My thoughts on the whole situation and why I think Fundy is the traitor:

I think from Dream’s perspective: Everything makes sense. I’m HIGHLY certain that Schlatt’s deal, which Dream said is “Something Wilbur and Tommy would never give him”, was that L’Manburg will either cease to exist (become part of the Dream SMP, and we know neither Wilbur not Tommy would ever do that), or that Dream would essentially become leader of it.

That’s why, in this flip situation, if he wins, he wins all of it. This also makes sense, as Dream is 100% alright with Wilbur just blowing it up, too: Because essentially he achieves the very same thing: L’Maburg/Manburg is no more.

Dream is absolutely right that he was never on their side or really on anybody’s side. Dream is his own side. It’s his server. He IS the Dream SMP, in that sense, just like Tommy is the spearhead of the rebellion right now.

I’m also fairly certain Dream will pull a lot more people than they think into this, and I think they ALSO know, in a meta-way, that they won’t be fighting only Schlatt and Dream and one traitor. He’s just letting them wallow in their security, although I have to say he LOVES dipping in his dramatic implications about what he’s doing or will do. In this case, he might’ve managed to keep quiet to let them think they’re safe.

So for Dream: Either they win, and L’Manburg is his/no more, or Wilbur sees they start losing, and L’Manburg is also no more. Honestly? He just has to make Wilbur panic hard enough to hit that button... and then he wins. It would be bad if he loses, though, so I do think he’ll pull together for this. He’s very competitive.

(Lot more juicy theory as to who the traitor is under the cut)

I predict that a good portion of BadboyHalo, Georgenotfound, Sapnap, Punz, potentially also people like Thunder or Alyssa?, are going to join Dream’s side. Sam seems close to the rebellion, but he’s also friends with George and Sapnap, but I just can’t see those two seriously fighting against Dream. If the stakes really are high, they’ll flip over to him, although I also can’t see them convincing Sam.

Most likely, George and Sapnap are just going to stay out of it entirely, and let Sam fight on the side of the rebellion. Maybe the current pet war might change that, though, say if Sapnap develops a new hatred against Tommy or even Sam? (I dont know what the pet war’s at atm but didn’t Sapnap and Sam fight over pets?), he would join in on Dream’s side. George? I have no idea. Most likely he just won’t be there. He doesn’t want to go against Sam (Who provides him with like. Everything), but he also doesn’t wanna fight Dream. IF he fights, though, I’m tempted to say he’d be on Dream’s side, but I’m honestly not up to date enough on his streams to say for certain.

As for the traitor: I actually haven’t seen Niki’s letter (to my great regret, I saw the news float around though), since I’m very focused on watching Tommy and Wilbur’s POVs. Honestly, if it’s Niki? That would be MASSIVELY surprising, and the biggest brain move I’ve ever seen. It’s possible, but I honestly don’t think it’s likely.

They’ve kept their characters fairly consistent, and while this IS kindof meta to say, I don’t think (with how things are atm), that Niki would betray L’Manburg, UNLESS she’s doing a double-agent thing and plans on tricking Dream in the end. That I could potentially see happening.

But knowing that she changed the anthem from Wilbur’s posessive “My L’Manburg” to just “L’Manburg”, that she’s been loyal even when they kinda half left her alone with Schlatt to tax her, and even during the pet wars she never strikes blood, but rather takes hostages and wants a sincere apology... I don’t see it right now. Then again, I don’t watch Niki’s streams on the SMP, so I could be wrong, as I’m not quite familiar with the intricacies of her character on the SMP besides the surface level.

On on hand... I also doubt whether there is a traitor at all, and Dream is just hoping to drive them apart and make sure they don’t get things done as efficiently as they could, because they’re busy pointing fingers at eachother, suspecting eachother, potentially even throwing somebody out once the tension between them snaps.

He needs to win this fight. If he does, he gets EVERYTHING. What they think of him after that point doesn’t matter, so the lie doesn’t matter. They can laugh at him afterwards, but he’ll still have won. I don’t know how many actually highly important details Dream would drop into conversation like that.

Consider, he does have a traitor. Why would he tell them he has one there? Why tell them that they’ll never guess? It just sows chaos in their group, and that’s what he wants. If he DID have one, he might just not say anything.

On the other hand: He might just be dramatic like that honestly. We all know they’re meta-fighting for the next spot in a sad-ist animatic, so Dream could very well be taking a more active role to insert himself into the story and cause some drama. Even if he DOES have a traitor on the inside, saying it still sows chaos. It’s a little risky, but if it really is something they won’t guess, then the chance that they’ll suspect the wrong person might be high enough, and make it worth it.

If he DOES actually have a traitor, my top sus are honestly Fundy, Tubbo, and maybe Ponk. I’m very sure it’s NOT Wilbur, Tommy, Sam, or Quackity.

Ponk doesn’t seem like the type of person to be reliable enough. He’s just kinda in it for the ride, and he’s too quiet to set a focus on. I don’t think Dream even considered him on the side of the rebellion for certain until today. It is, however, still possible. Tommy seems to trust him, and he’s not in deep enough for them to intently interrogate him on his loyalty, cause they know he’s more laid back when it comes to that. He feels only half in the rp to begin with, just wanting to fuck around with everyone. And then, BOOM, he’s actually been playing a massive role this whole time. It’s a little bit of a safe target, too, albeit a little underwhelming.

Tubbo... listen. We all love Tubbo. Tommy loves Tubbo, and we know Tubbo cares greatly for Tommy. Tubbo also seems(?) to care for L’Manburg. But I just....

It’s Tubbo, man. I have no idea. He seemed SO close to ACTUALLY flipping over to Schlatt before the festival. Everyone keeps pushing him around like this innocent tiny kid when he has the biggest third eye out of everyone and is the only one actually doing any work.

Tubbo has stated before that his official motivation is that he just wants peace for everyone. He just doesn’t want to fight and wants to do fun stuff. So of course he sounds horrified at the prospect of having to hunt down Tommy after Tommy was exiled, but happily went along with the festival. He was excited to do his speech. Schlatt actually placed responsability on them for once. He truly did seem happy about that.

It doesn’t matter as much to Tubbo who’s who. What matters is that the fighting preferrably stops, and they all just have a good time. Dream gave the line “I’m very convincing”, so I think he did actually have to convince the traitor, if there is one, to join his side. It wasn’t automatic.

Technically speaking, if L’Manburg is no more, and they’re all part of the Dream SMP again, doesn’t the fighting stop? If there’s no nation to fight over, then there’s no reason to fight. If L’Manburg is no more, then Schlatt has 0 power, and if Dream takes over, he could’ve promised to un-exile Tommy and Wilbur. And then they’re all part of the Dream SMP! No more fighting! Everyone’s on the same side!

Tubbo seems to care less for nations or sides, and much more for people, and for the people around them to be happy. His switch to enthusiasm at Schlatt’s festival came quickly, because many of the people he cared about still partook in it, and he never did hurt Tommy, because he does care about him.

But Tubbo DID say the line “may the festival begin” after his speech, and they knew what that would start. So why? In a way, I think Tubbo waged his options. Who does he care about more? Tommy, to his knowledge, is on Wilbur’s side. He might’ve decided in a moment of uncertainty that Wilbur and Tommy’s opinions of him are more important to them than the opinions of the other people there. Mostly Tommy, because we know those two would die for eachother. They chose Tommy over everyone else at that festival, potentially even over their own motivations, over their own gut.

Fundy, in fact, has MANY reasons to be the traitor, but isn’t quite obvious in that sense. They thought he was a traitor, actually, but once he showed them his diary, he essentially convinced all of them very certainly that he’s not the traitor, and they believed him. Dream joined the call later, so it’s possible he heard that part or Fundy told him about it (They’ve all been known to listen in on convos sometimes to know whats going in. They have to in order to build a good story line.)

Fundy has all the reasons. Reason number one, to me, is Fundywastaken. It’s canon in the Dream SMP lore, they just surprisingly haven’t done anything with it. During the independance war, that wasn’t a thing yet, and since they ARE a thing in canon now... they’ve never actually fought eachother. In fact, as things are now? We’re EXPECTING to see Dream fight his canon fiancé. Fundy officially joined the fight when Tommy asked him, confirming that they can count on him and that he will fight. We know for certain that Dream will fight.

If Fundy isn’t the traitor and doesn’t become one, then Dream and Fundy are inevitably meeting in battle on the 16th.

Consider his storyline: We’ve all been highly expecting Fundy to either punch Wilbur in the face or at LEAST be dissapointed in him or SOMETHING. He hasn’t, as far as I’m aware. He’s just standing there near him, very very quietly, giving a firm but quiet “yes” when Tommy asked him if they could count on him.

Fundy hasn’t expressed much to Wilbur at all, despite heving been left alone with Schlatt by him, despite how much he deserves to be angry at him for being patronized and not trusted with anything.

And, y’know... He’s officially Dream’s fiancé. The others don’t seem to know yet, and I don’t know how many people do know or not. It’s possible they just don’t know, and of course Dream wouldn’t tell them anything, not even tell anyone, this close before a fight. Dream might not even tell his close allies out of fear that the information could spread or that they could turn on him.

So honestly... Fundy seems the most likely for me to be the traitor, especially because there’s been plenty of foreshadowing for it, there’s a good setup, he has good reasons, and it wouldn’t seem like a cheap plottwist, but rather a gradual change.

Not to mention that meta-wise, Fundy has been actively involved in the rp and been dropping some pretty good lines himself. This isn’t something that Dream would have some non-rping person do.

I’m also kindof sure it’s not Technoblade, because Dream laughed it off and half-indicated that it is (Tommy: “I bet it’s Technoblade” Dream, cracking up: “I didn’t say that, you said that”), because he profits from doing so. He profits from them thinking Technoblade is the traitor. And also I really, really don’t think Techno would team up with Dream in this rp. Then again, Dream recently proclaimed to be on the side of chaos.... so who truly knows? I’ll definitly be surprised if it’s Techno, but I suppose it is a possibility. I just don’t think Techno can be convinced to much of anything, unless of course all it took was saying “Hey it’s Schlatt and Me against like 6 people so if we want an actual fight for once-” “Finally some bloodshed and war. I’m in”. I mean, I doubt it, but I’m leaving the possibility open.

TLDR: Dream wins if he wins the fight OR if Wilbur blows everything up. The traitor is likely either Fundy, Ponk or Tubbo, and I think there will be more people fighting on Dream’s side than just Schlatt and one traitor.

A Sadness Runs Through Him - A Dream SMP Analysis

‘A Sadness Runs Through Him’ is a song performed by The Hoosiers. Like my analysis of ‘Your Sister was right’, ‘Let it burn’ and ‘Call them brothers’, this will be a lyric by lyric basis. Also like the previous analysis, this will implement me going ‘also imagine a scene…’, because I have ~style~

People are puppets held together with string During the revolutionary war, both Dream and Wilbur used people to their advantage, using friendships and the ideas of leadership to create ‘puppets’ out of their allies There's a beautiful sadness that runs through him When Eret betrayed the group, not only did they lose everything but it was clear that no one felt entirely pleased with what happened. As he asked me to pray to the god he doesn't believe in Wilbur asking Tommy, Tubbo, Fundy and the other L’Manburgians to believe in the revolution, to believe in democracy, especially when he tried to rig the election and to blow up Manburg, was to ask them to believe in an ideal that he himself refused to believe

Time and again, boys are raised to be men Tommy refuses to let himself be called a child, or be coddled, and Wilbur and Dream both used that to make him fight in wars he shouldn’t have had to fight. Impatient they start, fearful they end He starts becoming an adult impatiently, and eventually he finds that he has to become the adult in every situation, the ‘mature one’ as Techno and Wilbur talk about chaos and blowing up Manburg. But here was a man mourning tomorrow Wilbur became insane because he was mourning a loss of what could have been, and began to distrust everyone. He drank, but finally drowned in his sorrow God, imagine a scene in an animatic where Wilbur is drinking something (probably alcohol), and then it zooms in on the drink and wilbur is floating in it, tears floating up towards the top of that drink Oh, he could not break surface tension Surface tension is the tendency of liquid surfaces to shrink into the minimum surface area possible. Basically - water breaks when people jump into it because the surface tension isnt strong enough to contain that, but some bugs can walk on water because the surface tension is strong enough to stop them from entering the water. Now, remember that last scene, of Wilbur crying in the alcohol/drink? imagine him trying to get out of the drink but not able to. He looked in the wrong place for redemption Blowing! Up! Manburg! Wont! Redem! You! In! The! Eyes! Of! Your! People! Dickhead! - in all seriousness, Wilbur looked to regain his people, his country, in the wrong place with people who would only enable him. Don't look at me with those eyes Tommy trying to plead with Wilbur, to get him to stop before he messes up big time, only to be ignored is painful and im going to remind you of Dream ‘stepping in’ now. I tried to unheave the ties Turn back the time that drew him Tommy wanting Wilbur back to normal, telling Tubbo not to give up hope for Wilbur but not to trust him? owch But he couldn't be saved Yo Wilbur is kind of the villain now.  A sadness runs through him, through him Wilbur is sad from losing his country, but he’s not coping well is he? Time and again, boys are raised to be men Tubbo joined the war just as much as Tommy did. Tubbo was, and still is, just a teenager. He was raised and used for war! He would have PTSD! Impatient they start, fearful at the end Could you imagine, the fear from Tubbo’s end, as he was shot by Techno? The betrayal, the hurt? But here was a man mourning tomorrow Who drank, but finally drowned in his sorrow Schlatt canonically is a drunkard, who used Tubbo and Quackity and Fundy for his own means. If he’s an angry drunk or a sad drunk is really up to you tho. Oh, he could not break surface tension Fundy betraying Wilbur and disowning him pog? He looked in the wrong place for redemption Fundy joining Schlatt’s side, trying to convince himself that Schlatt is good, but also spying on Schlatt RIGHT AFTER HE SAW WHAT HAPPENED TO TUBBO WHEN TUBBO WAS CAUGHT is a smooth brained move i must say. Don't look at me with those eyes Imagine the betrayal that Nikki would have felt after Fundy burnt her flag, the fight that could have ensued. I tried to unheave the ties Turn back the time that drew him Fundy desperately trying to turn Manburg back into L’Manburg, to make Schlatt the ruler that Fundy wished he could be But he couldn't be saved Schlatt isn’t able to be saved. He’s also the villain A sadness runs through him, through him Bro fundy just wants his home and family back man this hurts Don't look Don't look Don't, don't okay, so these lines are sorta just added in just before the chorus, so lets talk about what could go in the instrumental. Just,,, Wilbur getting the TNT, Tommy and Tubbo meeting (tommy telling tubbo about the tnt), Schlatt looks at Tubbo and thinking he’s sus, Nikki watching the flag burn. SO MANY OPORTUNITES Don't look at me with those eyes Tommy pleading with Wilbur not to set off the bombs, Quackity trying to help. I tried to unheave the ties Tommy locking him and Quackity in with Wilbur, not letting him explode the bombs without killing them all Turn back the time that drew him A flash, and normal Wilbur - wilbur pre revolution, pre power hungry, is back for a second But he couldn't be saved A flash to revolutionary Wilbur No, he couldn't be saved A flash to president Wilbur A sadness runs through him A flash to the election results A sadness runs through him A flash to running with Tommy A sadness runs through him A flash to meeting with Techno A sadness runs through him A flash to getting the TNT A sadness runs through him A flash to Wilbur leaving the room with Quackity Sadness runs through Philza, waiting in the dining room, three empty plates resting around where he sits, as he gazes out the window.

Dash stared at the boy in front of him. He didn’t know Dash was behind him but Dash was gaping at the twerp.

Danny Fenton was over there facing a ghost.

He was fucking staring it down and exchanging banter. 

Dash was floored as he watched, jaw dropped, as Danny casually sauntered right up to the ghost. 

The fuck does Fenton think he’s doing? Danny laughed at something he said and before Dash knew it the ghost was throwing an ectoblast right at the boy. He jumped and rolled to the side so quickly that Dash’s jaw was nearly unhinged now. 

And then something happened that Dash couldn’t explain. No matter how hard he racked his mind over it, he couldn’t come up with a conceivable explanation. 

Two blinding white rings formed around Danny’s waist, floating away from one another as they passed his chest, his hands, his head. Until left standing there was Phantom. The Danny Phantom. 

Dash looked like a fish now, mouth opening and closing as Phantom-Danny- rushed head first towards the ghost, hand charged up with radioactive ectoplasm. 

Fists flew, debris rained down, and soon Danny was sucking the ghost into that little thermos he always seemed to have. Floating there, Danny had a smirk on his face and he began to turn around. When he met Dash’s horrified and shocked gaze, his own eyes filled with fear. Danny’s eyebrows drew down though and he floated over to Dash who scooted away. 

Dash could see Danny’s mouth moving but he couldn’t hear anything. The sound of his heartbeat rushed through his ears and his chest heaved up and down too quickly. 

A hand softly landed on his shoulder and Dash looked up into Danny’s green eyes. His white hair stood on end, sticking up messily. Now that Dash had seen he could clearly see Danny in Phantom now. He was wearing a jumpsuit for fucks sake. 

Dash took in a deep breath and shakily spoke. 

“Change back.”

The whisper was airy and Dash could still feel himself shaking and breathing too fast but he got it out. 

Danny’s brows furrowed again. “Dash, do you want me to take you home? It’d only take-”

“No! Change back!” Dash spit back.

Danny jumped at the tone, but did as he was asked. The rings appeared again and Dash jerked his arm away from them before they could touch him. Before him was a totally normal, dweebish looking Danny Fenton. 

“Are you dead?" Dash asked, voice barely above a whisper. “How is this possible? You can’t be both alive and dead.” Dash’s face went slack and his eyes widened. “Am I dead? Am I imagining all of this in my last seven minutes of brain activity?”

Danny rolled his eyes. “Dash, no-”

“I’m not ready to die!” Dash wailed. “Is this the karma I get? To be left in purgatory until the end of time being tormented by both my hero and the kid I wailed on everyday?”

Suddenly Danny’s hands were both on Dash’s shoulders shaking him. The smaller boy leaned forward until their faces were only a few inches apart.

“Dash! You’re not dead!” Danny huffed out a small breath, hanging his head. “You just saw something you weren’t supposed to.”

Dash’s eyes widened at that again. “Are you gonna kill me?”

Danny groaned. “Dash, no. It’s just… There are people that if they knew this secret they’d want to kill me. The GIW, The Red Huntress. My parents.” His voice trailed off on the last word. 

“Your parents don’t know?” Dash whispered in horror. 

Danny snorted softly. “Are you kidding? Who knows what they’d do if they found out their son was public enemy number one. They could kill me, dissect me, try to expunge the ghost overshadowing me. Tear me apart molecule by molecule.”

Silence reigned between them before Dash spoke again. 

“Does anyone know?”

Danny nodded. “Sam and Tucker have known the whole time. Jazz found out on her own. All the ghosts know. For some reason.” He scrunched his nose at that. He groaned and leaned away from Dash, resting against the car the jock had been hiding behind during the fight.

“How did it happen?” Dash asked quietly. He had calmed down most of the way but he was still having the shakes. He looked at Danny who had his eyes closed, eyebrows drawn down.

“Accident with the ghost portal. I accidentally turned it on and it electrocuted me while I was inside it. It’s why I missed the first two weeks of freshman year.”

“Man..” Dash looked at the rubble on the ground in front of them. “That sucks.”

Danny snorted. “Tell me about it.”

They sat there in silence for awhile before Danny groaned again and started to stand up. 

“I gotta get going. I have chores and homework I need to do.”

Dash stood up shakily, leaning against the car once he was on his feet. 

“Do you want me to fly you home?”

His head shot up at Danny’s question and he saw the other boy rubbing the back of his neck. 

“I just thought because you’re still shaking that maybe- I don’t know how long it’d take you- another ghost could-”

Dash let out a chuckle at the boy’s nervous stammering. “Sure why not.”

Those rings appeared yet again and something clenched in Dash’s stomach. It wasn’t nearly as terrifying this time around. 

Danny picked Dash up off the ground and leapt into the air, going about the speed as a car would normally be driving down one of these roads.

They finally made it to Dash’s house and Danny flew in through the wall to his room. Danny’s tail turned back into legs and he touched down on the floor before placing Dash back on his own feet. 

“You gonna be okay?” Danny asked as he started turning back to the wall they just flew through. 

“Yeah. Are you gonna be okay?”

Shrugging, Danny cracked a smile. 

“As okay as a dead kid can be.”

He waved and floated through the wall, leaving Dash alone. 

QQQQQQQQQQQQQQ

“Danny!” Dash screamed. He ran between crumbled buildings and bent cars. “Danny!”

The ghost boy wasn’t anywhere in sight, not that that really mattered but it scared Dash. They’d all been at school when the guys in white smashed through walls and dropped through the ceiling.

English class with Lancer. 

Dash held his chin in his hand, looking boredly down at his notebook where he was doodling circles instead of taking notes. He looked up at Danny who was sitting in front of him to the left, barely keeping his head up off his desk. 

Mr. Lancer was droning on about some sort of poetry when the outside walls burst into the classroom, the ceiling falling apart above them. 

“Of Mice and Men!” Lancer exclaimed while students shouted and covered their heads as debris fell around them. 

As the dust cleared Dash could make out boulders of men, their white suits still immaculate of dust or dirt, all pointing their weapons at Danny. 

“Danny Fenton,” one started, “Under the Ecto-Containment Bill, section D paragraph one, you are hereby arrested for harboring a ghostly fugitive.”

“What?!” Danny exclaimed. “Why would I be harboring a ghost fugitive?” “The reasons are unknown. What we have gathered is that Phantom is taking up residence within you and either you are completely fooled, or you allow his presence.”

The blood drained from Danny’s face and Dash’s eyes widened. 

“Phantom? How would I be harboring Phantom? We’ve never even been seen in the same place before! How could I have met him?” Danny asked nervously. He eyed an agent as he took a tool from his pocket, pointing it at Danny who flinched. 

“Level 9 specter. We’ve been tracking Phantom’s ecto-signature for weeks. But if you’ve never been seen together before then…”

One by one the agents raised their weapons and pointed them at Danny. They came to life, the whirring filling the otherwise quiet classroom. The first shot was fired and students could be heard screaming as Danny ducked and rolled across the floor. 

Another blast was shot towards him and nearly clipped his arm.

“Go!” Dash shouted. He ran towards Danny, blocking the agents aim. 

“Dash!” Danny hissed. “What are you doing?”

“Buying you time. Now get out of here.”

Dash turned his head back towards the agent who fired the first shot at Danny. Running forward, he tackled the man to the ground, managing to knock the gun out of his hands. The other agents let out exclamations as they tried to pull him off the bastard. 

“The Fenton kid is gone!” 

At this, Dash was thrown to the side, forgotten, as the agents ran from the school, piling into vans or equipping their flight inventions. Once the area was clear, Dash sprinted from the building, ignoring the cries of Lancer and his classmates. 

“Danny!” Dash yelled again. His eyes were starting to well up and his breathing was getting faster. If he didn’t find Danny soon he’d be too panicked to continue looking for him. 

Suddenly, Dash felt a hand around his wrist pull him into one of the buildings the GIW had crashed through. Dash turned around and couldn’t help the sob that left his throat. 

He threw his arms around Danny, pulling him close against his chest. 

“I thought they got you!” He whispered. 

Danny shook his head. “They’ve got my ecto-signature, I won’t be able to hide from them for long here. I need to leave.”

“Leave where? Where could you possibly go?”

“Australia? The ghost zone? Hell, I might even actually need Vlad’s help this time.”

“But-”

Dash was interrupted as another hole was smashed into the building they were hiding in. 

There stood at least fifteen GIW, all armed, all aiming at Dash and Danny as they stood there. Guns began whirring and the two of them started backing towards the wall. 

“You’re surrounded, Phantom. There’s no escaping this time.” The agent barked. 

“What do you even need him for?!” Dash yelled. “He’s done nothing but good for this town!”

“He needs to be disposed of.”

The way the agent said it was so cold it sent ice down Dash’s spine. 

“What?”

“Whatever this child is shouldn’t exist. His power increases faster than any other specter and it would be unwise to leave it in the hands of a mere teenager. He must be exterminated.”

Dash gaped. “This is a kid you’re talking about! A living, breathing kid! That’s murder!”

“There are no laws protecting ectoplasmic organisms. They are supposed to be dealt with and disposed of.”

Dash’s vision swam with red. He stormed towards the agent, preparing to strike the snake’s face with his fist. 

Something shot into his stomach. It threw him into the ground and as his vision tilted he touched the aching, burning spot on his abdomen, lifting his hand to see it slick with blood. 

After that everything felt like it was happening outside a fish bowl that he was lying in. The sounds around him were muted. He vaguely registered Danny yelling. The glowing shield now surrounding Dash. Danny screaming. It all felt like it lasted a lifetime and a second all at the same time. 

Someone was shaking Dash’s shoulder, trying to get his attention. He turned his heavy gaze towards the figure-Danny-above him. He could make out the GIW agents scattered on the ground in front of them, the tears on Danny’s face. 

“Dash?” He could finally hear his name being spoken. Danny’s voice was filled with raw panic and Dash knew. He knew it wasn’t good. 

“Danny…” Dash whispered. He began to cough, a copper taste filling his mouth and over Danny’s shoulder he saw a hazy light blurring the broken building. 

“I’m not gonna… Not gonna make it.” Dash said shakily. 

A sob pushed its way out of Danny’s throat and tears streamed down his face faster. “No Dash, you gotta hold on. I’ll get you to a hospital and they can-”

“Danny-” Dash’s breath hitched as he placed his hand on top of Danny’s. “I can already- already see it. I’m not gonna make it to a hospital.”

Danny leaned down and pressed his forehead against Dash’s, his tears dripping onto the other boy’s face. 

“Go to- go to Australia. Or the ghost zone, Danny. Please. Get somewhere safe.”

Danny lifted his gaze to look into Dash’s unfocused blue eyes. His breathing picked up and Danny took his free hand and ran it through Dash’s hair until the erratic breaths stopped. 

Dash was standing above Danny and his body, watched as Danny leaned over onto his chest and sobbed. 

Dash took one last look at Danny and turned to walk towards the hazy light, leaving Danny alone.

Concept Development and Time Based Design - First Uni Project!

Understanding the brief

My understanding of the brief is that I need to create an animated storyboard based of an event in my life that I found exciting or memorable. 

I need to do various different research into what type of animatic I am going to create and have the end result looking like, immediately I have gravitated to a more picture based design, where I would take pictures and then draw over the top of them, and it is this research that will determine how that drawing will look like and if it can be done. 

Before that I am going to create a digital mind map of potential ideas that I can create with the tools and environment around me. (The website I am using is called bubbl.us https://bubbl.us/)

Completed Mind Map

This is what I have created for my mind map, there are not a whole bunch of ideas because I was pretty set on one idea from the get go. However I have still generated quite a few ideas based on memories that I can remember vividly. 

When creating this I did actually steer towards the High School section, which wasn’t the greatest experience, but the themes of loneliness and having to hide my true self I thought could make for a great animatic. Despite this I am sticking with my original idea of Meeting Connor. 

I am keeping this idea because it is something that happened at uni and I can easily take photos of the exact locations and people involved, also because it was very recent I remember everything about the day making it easy for me to create initial designs before final ones digitally.

In addition the emotions that I felt that day are hopefully going to be much more exaggerated, meaning facial expressions will be much more intense making it much easier for them to be understood without the audience being told directly what the character on screen is feeling.

(These ideas are just going to be simple bullet points that I can refer to in the future. These will be the exaggerated emotions and how I can potentially portray them in an animation.)

Music that accompanies can get progressively intense as the animate goes along, until the opening of the door and they see each other, returns to slow, and more calmer expressions and feelings. 

Once I have done smaller thumbnail sketches of this animate I will describe the actions in more detail.

Art Style and Other Works from students and professionals

This is another students work that was shown to me in the initial lecture, and immediately it caught my attention because it was clear that images were taken and drawn over which is the idea that I want to pull off as well. I actually really like this style of how they have drawn it as well, it is sketchy and very drawing like, I like the rough edges because to me it adds character and depending on what is being shown on screen it can provoke certain emotions in audiences and that is what any sort of media aims to do: PROVE EMOTION.

Now I am going to continue research to find more professional art work like this and how I can take aspects from all to make mine original rather then a dupe.

Professional examples / Inspirational work

These two examples stuck out too me for very different reasons. 

The first one is a scene from the series Prison Break which what seems like a car escape. The artist who created this is called Marcus Endean (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1057232/) , he has done multiple storyboards for other programmes like Fear the Walking Dead and also films like War for the Planet of the Apes and he is now currently working on Deadpool 2 as a storyboard artist.

I like the style that he has done because it looks very rough around the edges but it is still able to tell the story, and the lines actually contribute to it, showing the speed of the action that will take place. The theme of sketchiness is what I think I will employ when creating my storyboards digitally. This is because I am not the most confident or best drawer so being able to draw things a bit out of place and still have it look professional will be enjoyable to do. 

Moving onto the second one, this is just a storyboard created by an artist called ChangHong Ren (https://ch-ren.deviantart.com/) , his style repeats through most of his work. His style is both very solid and also sketchy depending on what he is doing, or sometimes it is a mix of the two like you see above. However the thing that struck out to me was the splash of colour in each of his storyboards, the splashes are placed in all different places and they are all different sizes and compliment different aspects of the drawings, most of the colours that you see draw your attention to that part of the screen which I found really unique.

This would benefit me because I know drawing my animate itself would be time consuming and colouring would be even more, therefore this is giving me the idea to just draw and then add different splashes of colour, unlike Ren I think I would play around with using different colours each storyboard to portray emotions further making it more understandable how the characters are feeling in that moment. 

These are of course ideas but I will be playing around with them in the design process.

Technique example

I attempted to create a slide based on the style of this storyboard. I chose to make the spot of colour more prominent than in the example, just to fill the screen a bit more and show the intensity of the transition from white to red. 

I do like this technique however to create an entire animatic with this technique for me it wouldn’t have come out looking professional as my artistic skills are not up to par, if they were a little bit better I may have gotten away with it but I wanted to show a shot use this technique to show that I have acknowledged  research.

Books illustrative examples (style)

THE HOBBIT

The first two book illustrations are from The Hobbit, the book has over 10 illustrative drawings throughout, depicting certain locations that are described in the book.

I chose these specifically for different reasons, the first one I chose because I loved the use of lines to create the environment, there are blocks of black colour but the lines are predominant and that style of drawing in particular really interests me just because of how simplistic yet effective it looks.

The second one I chose because of its pattern like style, the use of circular shapes is really what drew me in, i’m not particularly a fan of the huge blocks of black but the circle shapes looks like an interesting concept to play around with.

TOLKIEN A DICTIONARY

The last two images are from a book called Tolkien A Dictionary which inside describes and sometimes illustrates key characters, creatures and locations we know to be a part of the Middle-Earth Universe. 

I chose these images for the same reason, purely because I loved the sketchy look to the illustrations, similar to the previous images which was populated by shapes however these lines are more sketched and rough around the edges which I actually kind of prefer in way, I like that you can have something looking sketchy but also professional, artistic and detailed at the same time.

I have previously mentioned this style of sketchiness before, these illustrative drawings are reinforcing the idea of potentially having this as my drawing theme for my storyboards. 

Similarly the idea of having no real colouring in my storyboards is also becoming to be a more solid idea, I previously researched a storyboard artist who used just one piece of colour to draw the audiences attention to a specific part of the storyboard and I recently was taught in a lecture on Photoshop how to do this technique, so it has made me feel better in that aspects as I now know how to do it if I decide to do that style of colour on my storyboards.

Storyboard Animation Examples / Inspirational Work

SHUT UP! Animated Storyboard

This an example of an animated storyboard that I found on Youtube. It seems to be about a boy who has an argument with his Mum and then storms out the house to find a world that he didn’t expect, populated by monsters and other creature like characters. I chose this one as an example out of others because I liked the way the storyboards changed with the theme on screen so for example when the floating monster was chasing the boy, it zoomed into the monster and the entire storyboard shot shaked, this happens multiple times. Also when the main character starts to run or the action gets more intense, the lines that are used are more rugged and messy, I feel it really helps portray the emotions and feelings that the boy feels. 

I can use this type of method where other elements aside from what you are seeing on screen helps portrays emotions, for example moving the entire storyboard, or doing harsher and more lines to portray emotions better.

The World's End: Animated Storyboards

This id another animated storyboard example, from the film The World’s End. The real life outcome is displayed alongside the previously created storyboards and they seem to match perfectly. What I like about this animate is the very basic look it has, the characters are made out of the basics of shapes and shaded very subtly to create dimension. Despite them being this simplistic they were clearly understandable as they were able to create the film using these.

The theme of very simple lines, dots and shapes have been very common with most of the research I have done in regards to the style of storyboards I would create, primarily because I am not the strongest drawer so seeing storyboards and pictures that are populated by lines and other simple shapes makes me feel better knowing that I can create something understandable yet creative using those elements.

Reverse Storyboard // The Hobbit the Battle of the Five Armies (The White Council VS Nazgûl and Sauron)

The Hobbit is one of my all time favourite franchises, this scene in particular features great visuals and shots when the White Council fight and banish the Nazgul and Sauron. As you can see I have pinpointed the area of the scene I will focus on, this minute of footage really shows a lot of the shots and angles we know and use for example close up, medium shot, long shot and over the shoulder shot etc.

I will be creating 6 storyboards, but making sure that each shot features a different type of shot. I’ll be using a screenshot and then drawing over the top of it in Photoshop, hopefully accurately recreating the shot digitally using all the colours present as well. The technique I will use will be similar to the one I use for my actual animated storyboards so this will give me some good practice before that.

Thought and design process - Reverse Storyboard

Using tools in Photoshop

Initially I planned on using the colours from the original images to create my storyboards, however I got half way through doing it and it didn’t look what I had hoped the colours didn’t correlate well with each other in a sketchy form. Unfortunately I didn’t save that error to document in this research to show progression but the error influenced me to use some of the tools in photoshop. 

For example the screenshot at the top shows grey shapes that I created with the Magnetic Lasso Tool, the contrast between the fire and castle walls allowed the tool to easily trace around the walls in the frame to create the solid objects you see in the screenshot. 

I used these tools as well for the characters: Saruman, Elrond and Galadriel. As they also had contrasting background colours that the magnetic tool could easily pick up. 

This tool dramatically decreased my time creating the storyboard, and allowed for a more structured look. 

The only negative is that I could only fill the object with one colour, whereas if I sketched all of it I could use multiple grey tones to create dimension and texture, the only solution to this issue was to do some shading over the top which is a bit tricky as I was sketching over a block of colour.  

Layers 

I really made use of layers in the creation of storyboards, it allowed me to not worry about overlapping colours with other objects, I could freely sketch and have the lines be crisp and not overlap. All I had to do was make sure I was selecting the right layer when sketching.

So far...

This is the first reverse storyboard so far, I still need to add shading to the grey blocks of colour from the walls and tidy up a few lines but I like the way it is turning out, I like the combination of structured objects as well as sketchy ones. 

Previously I said I was going to use colours, but using black, white and grey tones made for a better look.

The only thing I think I can improve on is the look of the characters, I did make the characters more light colours but they are still just blocks of colour, I feel I need to go back and add more detail to get that humanoid look, without making them look silly.

In addition in this design process the idea of using blocky objects created by the magnetic tool mixed with the sketchiness you see makes for a really good look I feel. I think this will be the look of my actual storyboard, using the lasso tool for the background elements and sketch out the people and more intricate details that cant be traced.

Finished Reverse Storyboard

Long shot / Over the Shoulder shot

Unfortunately, as you can by all three drawings I am not a gifted artist. However you can see that this first drawing did take up a huge chunk of my time and looks considerably better then the other two which, to be honest I did rush. 

The point of this exercise was to pick a scene that featured various different camera shots, for this first one I felt it was a mixture between a predominantly long shot and also over the shoulder as the backs of the White Council are facing us, but the long shot is predominant because all characters are in full view. 

Medium shot

Quality of this drawing has dramatically decreased from the previous one, but the shot is clear I feel. This is clearly a medium shot as only half the characters body is shown, I do not feel the camera is too close for it to be a close up or too far to be a long shot.

Close up

Again, this drawing is significantly more lacking detail then the previous two but the shot of a close up is very clear, only her face is seen in the shot, allowing for full facial expression recognition.

I chose these three shots, because the scene itself features lots of similar shots, lots of close, medium and long shots, these ones I have drawn were the first ones shown in the scene I chose in the given time period displayed next to the video.

**ART STYLE UPDATE** **NEW VISUAL IDEA** **LITERAL EPIPHANY**

I literally just had an EPIPHANY in the shower and thought of a whole new way I can create my “Meeting Connor” animated storyboard. I have stated previously that my art skills are lacking so to save myself a lot of drawing to do I have decided that I want the main character per se to be my heart. My heart will portray the feelings and emotions I felt during this time. There will be real life visuals as well, where me and Connor communicate via text, but instead of my face being drawn reacting to it, it will be my heart. This will allow me to be more creative with the backgrounds where the heart is in frame, I am excited as well to give a heart facial features and bodily movements and really over exaggerate them. 

I believe this will be really good if created properly, similarly it has made me more motivated to create my animated storyboards because initially I was very demotivated because my drawing ability suffers.

Next I plan on quickly typing up a plot for “Meeting Connor”. Screenshots will be shown below.

Meeting Connor initial ideas 

This is the result of my amazing epiphany!!!

I have quickly jotted down a plot for my animated storyboard, I was typing so quick because I didn’t want to forget anything which is why it doesn’t look very pretty.

Hopefully I am able to stick to this dimmed down plot, next I am going to do some thumbnail sketches in which I can really decide what the visuals will look like, but this noted plot will be the basis for my sketches and final animate.

Also I hope I am able to create this idea in Photoshop the way I want, I feel I will,be able to because the visuals are quite simplistic in design, I will just have to create a lot of storyboards with lots of different actions to portray emotion.

The only thing I need to make sure of is that the brief specifically mentions narrative, I have to make the animate look interesting and keep it interesting throughout, despite not having to really go over one minute, that is still a long time that I need to keep audiences interested. Despite this, my sudden realisation i feel makes my idea 100 times more interesting and will keep audiences focused and watching because it won’t be what everyone else is doing. Just like the brief said I “have re sequenced and reinterpreted to modify the story and their intended message”.

Thumbnail Sketches

These are my completed thumbnail sketches, I followed the notes you see above perfectly and I was able to create a decent amount of storyboards, I didn’t storyboard every movement as that would take far to long to create and take up time that could be better spent actually creating them in Photoshop.

I really like how I have incorporated both fictional and non-fictional storyboards. 

In addition I am excited to really exaggerate the emotions of the hearts and change the colour of it as the bond between the characters gets stronger. Similarly as the heart is a recurring element I will be able to copy the hearts shape rather than drawing it out every single time, this will again save time in the long run. 

Extended research - In a Heartbeat Animation

After completing my storyboards and speaking to other people about my idea, one person stated that there is an animated short called In a Heartbeat which is about a closeted boy who’s heart chases after the boy he likes, and in the end both their hearts come together to form one. 

This is fairly similar to my story, but I had no idea this existed until being told.

I double checked with my lecturers and they all agreed it was fine to carry on with the idea because I wasn’t aware of this before hand but they suggested I document it just to let people know.

My story will obviously be far less detailed but the focus on the heart is the key similarity here.

Development of animated storyboard

I have picked screenshots that link to the art style I chose. As you can see I have incorporated both sketchy and solid created objects in my animated storyboard. It looks similar to my reverse storyboard aside from the fact that the characters in my actual animate are in more detail rather then blocks of colour. In addition, like I said before it is in full colour whereas originally I planned to do it with just one faded colour in the areas of importance. 

However this changed when I changed the entire concept of my animate, I would have used that style if the focus was on my actual character and not my heart, I needed to put colours in to show the transition of the hearts emotions, going from grey to pure red which showed its feelings. 

These screenshots show the progression of my tidiness in After Effects. In the first screenshot as you can see it is very unnecessarily filled with pre-composed folders, this is because I created elements of my animated storyboard in after effects, editing the shapes each layer, and as you could probably tell that took a very long time that could have been used elsewhere and before I understood this I couldn’t start again as I was too far ahead in the project.

However the second and third screenshots show more structure in my work. After realising that I was using a lot of time I did realise that I could just create them all in photoshop and place them into after effects and then animate them there using the tools provided. It also looks much more pleasing too look at rather then seeing huge lines across the screen because of the pre-composed folders. Also I created two separate folders, one for Photoshop files and the other for After Effect creations, this just allowed to place things in one big folder rather then having them all out and having it look messy.

The final things to do now is create the flat storyboard, so now I am going to create screenshots of all the shots and put it into a document ready for Friday which is the submission deadline.

Evaluation

Overall I feel that I have performed well in this project. I was able to quickly decide on a topic for my animate and once that was out of the way it allowed me to really focus and nail all the research in terms of style and influences. 

I also already had a style in mind, that being the sketchy style, I chose this purely because I am not the strongest artist, so doing a sketchy style allows me to be rough around the edges but still have it look effective. 

The Photoshop lectures also really helped, I learned a lot of ways in which I could create my storyboards. In addition I used my graphics tablet throughout this whole project and it made everything so much easier because it is basically like drawing straight into the computer.

In addition to using the internet for research I also used books that I own with illustrations, just to show a wide variety of research rather than just the internet.

This project really allowed me to develop and change a story to my desire, to make it more appealing but also believable which I feel I have done as I have used both real life and fake elements, keeping them both linked throughout the entire animate.

To improve I feel that I would make the movement animations more flowing, meaning I would need to create more and more shots, I feel that I didn’t really put much detail into the more complex movements however they are still visible and understandable I feel. 

Similarly, in the future I really need to work on time management, this has been an issue throughout college as well as this uni project, I need to balance my time in both the research and creative aspect. I could possibly create a timetable of what to do on certain days, so I can balance both the creative aspects perfectly and potentially still have time left over at the end of the project to go back and sort through everything.

also mood!! i got into the show about 2 years ago and i wanted to do so much fanart for it but my brain said no (for the most part that is, i drew a few things) but finally i got some inspo recently and ahhh i love these funky ladies!!!

I wish i like knew how to animate or at least storyboard/make an animatic bcuz i had an idea floating around my brain for the longest time to use the song open up your eyes from the my little pony movie as a moon cass and rapunzel song bcuz it fits so perfectly 😭😭 but alas… i am weak

i always liked tangled the movie but i was never much of a eugene fan so when i watched the show, while i did warm up to him, i def preferred cass!! + sun and moon couples are the best :’)

I was into warrior cats Instagram when we met! We either became mutuals through that or maybe Harry Potter? I was either ask_Bluestar or ocelatte at that point (went by a different name tho).

And SAME I never particularly was into the movie or anything but the series… my god…. Cassunzel has been consuming literally every waking thought of mine for the past two and a half years 😭
