this is your periodic reminder that for all the artifacts and errors and "tells" one could possibly list, the only reliable way to actually determine if an image is ai generated is to investigate the source. it is becoming increasingly common for "fake classical paintings" to circulate around curative aesthetic blogs, and everyone should be using this as an opportunity to not only exercise their investigative skills but also appreciate art more in general. you're all checking out the artists you reblog, right? 🫣

so what are some signs to look for? let's use this very good example.

what a lovely late-impressionist piece blended with evocative leyendecker-esque themes! why haven't you ever heard of this artist before? surely tumblr would be all over an artist like this. who is justin brown?

your two options from here are to do a search for the name, or a reverse image search. i prefer reverse image searching, particularly when it comes to a common name like "justin brown". so what does that net?

Immediately, without looking at any text, something is wrong: it barely exists. an actual historical piece would turn up numerous results from websites individually discussing the piece, but no such discussions are taking place. Looking at the text, though, does show the source-- and at least in this case, the creator was honest about their medium.

But let's also look at the "exact matches", in case a source doesn't make itself apparent in the initial sidebar results like this.

This section will often tell you post dates of images, and here it can be seen that the very first iteration of the image was posted 15 days ago. It did not exist online prior to that.

Seeing how long an unsourced image has been floating around is a skill applicable to more than just generative images! See a cool image of an artifact or other intriguing item with a vivid caption? Reverse search it! If all the results are paired with that caption and only go back a few months, you might just have viral facebook spam.

Sometimes generative creators are dishonest about their medium and do not tag it like in the example, so that's when establishing "jpeg provenance" becomes important. While it can be a little trickier to determine if someone is using generative images and not admitting to it if they aren't trying to pass it off as a classic, something to consider is the age of their account and the frequency with which they post. Here are some account red flags:

-Did they only start posting art after 2022, or if they did before, did their style/skill level WILDLY change? Not gradual improvement-- I'm talking amateur graphite portraits straight into complex digital renders. Everyone starts somewhere, newness is not a red flag alone; it's newness combined with existing in a vacuum away from any community.

-Do they post fully-finished paintings several times a week? -Do many of these paintings seem iterative of a similar theme or subject matter ("three well-dressed young men face each other under shade and dappled sunlight")?

-Does their style change in inconsistent ways? An artist that can swap between painting like Drew Struzan and Hokusai should be pretty well known, right? Why is no one hyping this guy?!

-Do they have social media besides the source instagram? If so, what are they posting about? Are there any WIPs? Doodles? Interactions with other artists? Gallery dates? 3am self-doubt posts? Or is it all self-promo? Crypto? Seemingly nothing art-related at all for someone pushing out 3 weekly paintings?

Basically, if it's important to you to omit this stuff when you curate, please don't just smash reblog if the source doesn't seem to be the OP themselves. Seeking out sources was important even before this became an issue, now it is more than ever.

Fandom Friday, 04/11: Fanart!

Before we get moving, however, let me first pass on a few quick announcements—first, with Star Wars Celebration happening in Tokyo next week and myself with not much money, good scheduling, or a strong grasp of the Japanese language…I’m afraid that I’ll have to remain here in the states instead, but fear not! Next week, I plan to offer up the next chapter to three of my current Star Wars-related fanfics, so! If you’ve ever read ‘Anomaly’ (with Jod Na Nawood); “The Surprise Guest Series” (with Crosshair), or “Kiss Me, Captain” (with Captain Howzer), hopefully this coming Friday will be the day that I start adding updates for all three.

Second, if you’ve seen any of my Commander Fox memes, next weekend is also the same time period where I plan to release a masterlist of the ones I’ve done so far, so try and stay tuned for that post if it interests you in any way.

And third, I’ll probably have a few hand-drawn WIPs to share next Wednesday if things continue to go well for me…so, hopefully, fingers crossed that I can at least have the outlines inked by the end of this weekend. If so, you'll get to see the Gothified version of my original Trooper character, Commander Miles, as well as the Inquisitor version of Arc Trooper Fives...but if not, I'll just toss them into the mix the week after that and work my way up from there.

Hey! I was wondering if you do more traditional work or digital work? Your art is gorgeous and I was wondering what your work process is in some of your pieces

The latest thing I posted was colored digitally but I do that very rarely because I no longer have a tablet, so this was entirely done with a mouse, and that's not very comfortable. The doodle itself was made with a ballpoint pen on some random paper, then scanned.

(I hate leaving drawings at the pencil stage, so I either finish and/or color them or just doodle them directly with a ballpoint pen oops)

The VAST majority of my work is traditional, and made on very small formats (usually half an A4). I mostly work with watercolor and watercolor inks, but also watercolor pencils and poscas for some details and the lighting.

Here's a step by step WIP of some Camera Obscura (Doctor Who) fanart I made earlier this year. I'm aware my process is kinda weird (like starting with the shadows)...

Once the physical version is finished, I scan it, and I do some post-prod with (a very old cracked version of) photoshop to erase mistakes and stuff.

Hi y'all, I just wanted to talk a little about the behind the scenes of what I've been up to, to give y'all a little transparency and to open myself up for any tips or input! 🙏 Thank you for your continued support and for taking the time to look at my art 🫶

First and foremost I wanted to give some transparency about my art capacity.

As og followers may remember, I started this blog when I was doing art full time. Eventually my living expenses grew and I had to go back to work. I find myself in a cycle of "I'll make more art soon, once I get a job!" And "I'll make more art soon, once I am done with this job!" I lost my most recent job suddenly, having had an extension waved over my head until the last day(October 7th). Now I'm excited to have more time for art, but I am also feeling a rush to get a new job ASAP as I've been living paycheck to paycheck. I dream of doing this work full time, I'm just scared it's not quite there yet and I worry that I come off as scammy or dishonest when I anticipate more stability around the corner.

Second, I've been struggling with the Patreon. It's taken me a while to come to terms with this, but from what I've seen Patreon is not intuitive at all from the creator end. It doesn't do a good job of organizing addresses, emails, showing who or who isn't subscribed to me, or organizing and displaying the work I put on there. I've been really shocked by this experience, since lots of big names use Patreon. It's been a great way to streamline support, but it's been unhelpful in every other regard. I would like to continue using it, but I will most likely post more wips or process videos there in the future.

Which brings me to my third point, zines. I love making zines so much, it feels personal and fulfilling and fun! However the Patreon issues make it harder to keep information in order about where to send zines, or even where to message folks about them. In addition to this, the post office has been a big barrier to me, oftentimes only being open at the same time as my dayjob. Making zines can take days, then sending them out is a whole other monster.

This work is so important to me. Drawing peoples fantasies, representing body types, creating work around sexuality and the human experience feels like what I'm meant to do. I've made comics since I was a kid. This is the dream to me. The friends I've been able to make through this work are so important to me, and the conversations have been invaluable. Not to mention fun! I wanna doodle, I wanna draw hot stuff, I wanna thirst over these dudes! I want to play!

But I also just want to be transparent about the barriers I'm working around to share that experience. I'm completely self taught, both in art AND in running shops, building websites, running 8 accounts, etc. I take a lot of time to learn the logistics of these things, and try to make them make sense for my relationship with y'all (I do not want to paywall my art!! I don't want to!!!). This year my desktop broke down (the main one I use for all paintings and digital art). I've paused my Etsy shops and my Patreon to try to catch up with things. Trying to learn to paint in a completely different program. Then lost my job with no savings.

At the end of the day I don't want anything to come between me sharing my art with you. I wish I could doodle a thing, take a picture, and post it here. No third party site, no shop, no subscription. Just sharing my art with you. I promise I'm trying to figure out how to stay as close to that as possible, and I want to thank y'all for sticking with me as I untangle all of that.

So, what can you expect in the near future?

I'm working on a couple of painting commissions right now, which you should be able to see in the next couple of days! I want to catch up on kinktober and get those posted as well. There's a comic commission in progress which I'm very eager to work on, and which I think y'all will be excited for! To ease the weight of the Patreon I think I may do less zines/polls there and more wips and process videos! If possible, I want to do more full colored work too.

I’m ranting a little about my own comic planning and writing about the Castlevania games :)!!!

Cutting this here because it will likely be long!

So—

I have a bit of progress on the CoD Trevor and Julia comic! I haven’t gotten to Julia yet, but I’m drawing the conversation Trevor has with Isaac while being stabbed just to set up everything, warm up, and figure out how I want to be drawing panels and poses and such. I’m sharing the WIP for now mostly cause I drew a couple head angles I’m usually pretty terrible at and they came out nice :3. Idk, I need to finish more of it until I figure out whether or not I’m digitizing and coloring it. Either way I’ve dedicated a handful of pages to it.

Anyway— in this comic my main goal is to show how Julia managed to save Trevor because 1. It’s not shown in game and 2. God damn she must be a good healer to have saved him at all ∑(ﾟДﾟ). Where Trevor gets stabbed is not a great spot to get stabbed in (I’ll probably make a separate post ranting about that lol), so I’m just very curious as to how I’m going to depict her saving him from the castle and then actually doing the doctoring/magic part. It’s genuinely such a shame that this doesn’t get a cutscene of its own because I really want to see these two interact with each other and in general just more of Julia.

So anyway that one I can’t talk about too much more or else I’ll be spoiling all of it X,,,,D.

In other writing and comic idea news though— I think I’ve figured out the route I’m going with when writing Selena :3. It kinda came to me while I was playing Chronicles recently and also through a conversation with my sister about it! So I have some good ideas of how characters will be written now, I just have to think about outlining all of the sections better and writing out scripts for it and then I’ll be good to go ahead on the whole CV1-CV2 comic X3!

Well, as long as uh art block and stress and general life will allow it 💀.

Other things I have ideas for are a lot of random character interactions, very headcanon-y stuff, and the two with mainly OCs, though these will probably be either random shorts for now or will be on the back burner for other projects. The 1950s movie set story in particular though has a lot more ideas for as of right now, including new side characters and such… tbh I almost want to make this an RPG Maker fangame project, but I don’t have the skills for that quite yet.

And uh that’s kinda just the whole update! It’s a bit shorter than I expected so here’s some doodles :3

How long does it take you to create your pieces in all? Do you (like me) have a bunch of sketches and wips lying around that you get motivated to complete as the inspiration comes? Or is it more methodical and intentional?

Uhh for this one for example it has taken me maybe 4 hours not all at once though. I drew on paper then finalized in digital another day.

It really depends. The vess iii took me more time, just a full afternoon for rendering because there was alot 😭

I do have alot of wips and doodles sitting in my sketchbooks, i do wait for the right time to continue them or just post them when i have nothing else. On some good days i do start and finish it, i plan my stuff like i do with inktober if my vision is more complex, i just need the right mood unfortunately 😔

God I've been doing this meme for so long... I think next year I'm gonna change my format/layout. NEW TEMPLATE FOR MYSELF.

2024 was a... rough year in general. I had a lot of self conscious moments about my art, a lot of self loathing about my art, a lot of shyness about my art in general. Actually debating just.... not posting anymore honestly. I'm tired of chasing 'attention'

Rough.

On top of that I just had MONTHS I barely drew more than a handful of sketches. With most of those being "PLEASE, RUDY, JUST DRAW SOMETHIN'" screeching in my head from Chalk Zone.

I did a lot of traditional inking this year, found my pen I like doing it with and just getting myself to loosen up a lot more. I have like five things I was working on before uh surgery, that I don't wanna scan so DECEMBER IS JUST THE DHVARRIS COUPLE. I like how dad came out anyway so whatever.

I have a lot of... not so pleasant thoughts about this year unfortunately. January to April I was really enjoying traditional stuff, I was enjoying a lot of what I was doing for AU jokes and I still have a hell of a lot of Lokius stuff I wanna finish.

April to June I was playing video games and trying to fight depression over art and also chipping away at big stuff I wanna do - but my PC is FIGHTING these days for that. I really adore the piece I did for July, I did a value study for once and really like how the colors came out in the end. Like perfect atmosphere for Nightmare Syndicate finally. August is a BIG WIP I wanna finish god damnit ;;

September I finished a long standing commission and got myself to really finally remember what I love about digital art and coloring, and started to fix some part of my brain there lol

From then on out I'm on a Baldur's Gate kick, and a lot of my shit has been studys on like Astarion's hair or face, my own bb girl Ophira's horms and markings, or just doodles I don't feel are 'amazing' :T

October is making me so annoyed that's like ONE OF TWO DRAWINGS I DID THAT MONTH OUTSIDE DOODLES AND POST ITS I SENT MY GIRLFRIEND... but whatever. Yells.

Idk. When I get recovered I'm gonna be hopefully blazing through commissions, and personal stuff of Ophira and the gang because I just.... wanna do clean sketches of events I've written for unu so

one of my OFA AUs... I just want to write them bouncing off each other's personalities... the Band AU's weirdly got my attention, I think because I incorporated vigilantism into it, but I also started thinking about Jumanji AU this afternoon...

I got weirdly fixated on FFXV during the last two weeks of my spring semester, and I have something like 16k of a procrastinatory Solheimian Immortal!Prompto x Ardyn fic in my docs. So that's... that's happening.

I'm also thinking of opening prompts up for the summer! They'd be really short stuff though, and more doodles than full digital pieces... So look out for that pinned post, haha.

Whole lotta text below about my drawings and myself. Reading is free if you want :)

Whew, the last few months have been truly something, specially for my artistic skills. Pixel art was my first approach to color in drawing, my first public posts were also pixel art; it has an aesthetic I quite like, very charming and easy to understand (not as easy to produce!). I'm going on a hiatus to practice digital art now that I got my hands on a drawing tablet, I don't know how long it will take for me to be confident enough about my drawings with it to post them, but I don't think it's gonna be very long before I post again. Digital has been my dream even before I knew how to draw, so I'll be dedicating to it from now on (or until the tablet dies or something lol), that said, it's unlikely I will post pixel art again, unlikely, not impossible.

Making this post means more than what I like to acknowledge, posting online was esentially one of my first steps towards "coming out of my emotional bunker" as I like to call it. I still remember how my hands trembled when I first showed one of my doodles drawn on my sketchbook to my sister, I always hoped to be nonchalant about these things but no, that was probably the first time I found out I was an enormous coward, and it was bittersweet at first, it took me a while to accept it. Shame has always been a part of me, so has been fear and doubt; I'm very secretive about anything that has to do with me, with who I am, with what I think and what I feel, and art was a way to put all that crap onto a canvas and, hopefully, understand it better. I still can't, but that's part of the fun. Showing my drawings was, in a way, breaking some of the chains that kept my interior """"safe"""". I'm still weak in many aspects, I'm quick to undermine my progress and beat my own ass for no reason at all, and I don't think that's gonna change any time soon, but showing my art is the perfect painkiller for that.

Even if my posts are just some gurls and occasional criptic nonsense, it's part of me, a very big one actually. My OCs are stupidly important to me, they hold stories that mean a lot more than they seem (I hope), I shaped them, and they shaped me back, that's why I so proudly parade them around... Buuut I'm not a writer so yeah, pain :D. Every media I consumed, every movie I watched, every song I listened to; I can only hope I can properly portray the effects they had on me on my future illustrations.

Just a silly little update. Thought it'd be nice to showcase some more of my work I've been doing!

Most of these paintings here have prints on Redbubble. The big one in green I have not added yet, though.

This large painting below is a WIP! It's a landscape from Ghost of Tsushima. Been wanting to do this one for a while now, and it's been slow but fun. So many little details, too. It's still got a lot of work to do on it, but it's not a commission piece so I can work on it whenever I want.

My other dorky craft habit is crochet. Made some pumpkies. It's so much fun to do, and relatively relaxing.

And then some crap doodles. It's very scribbly because my pen has a stegosaurus on the end of it, so the heft is weird, but it kind of makes for an interesting effect.

Drawing is more of something I do to pass the time (at least traditional drawing, not digital stuff). I definitely think I'm more skilled in writing and painting.

First drawing is Dovol, my evil villain character in my book series. The scrawling over the face is supposed to be a veil. Second is Scarlet, the main character. I just really like drawing her hair, hahaha. Last is just an eyeball--I think I draw eyes more than I draw other things, but never on a face.
