stargate atlantis is the runaway lead, then sg-1, 90s/00s treks, the x-files, and a grab bag of other things. only two fics so far for m*a*s*h but the forecast looks good!

4. What are your top five fics by kudos?

no sooner met (star trek voyager, j/c, eight years of friends-to-lovers in 5k or less)

career day (stargate sg-1, clone!sam/jack, damn that sure was a choice to go back to high school amirite)

next chapter (the good place, chidi/eleanor, the intimacy of reading)

first date (star trek voyager, j/c, falling in love again)

5. Do you respond to comments?

eventually!!!! i tend to keep nice ones on my home page for a while to cheer me up and then sometimes they get buried. i wake up nights like "damn the good place fandom really went all out with amazing comments on that random fic in like 2018 and i never replied," so maybe i need to go through my inbox and belatedly clear my cosmic debts.

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

twilight (stargate atlantis, sheppard/weir, what if john didn't break the cycle). strong on style but real weak on comfort.

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

weaving loose ends (stargate sg-1, sam/jack) ends with a wedding! in twenty years of writing romance fic, that has maybe only happened once?

8. Do you get hate on fics?

not yet! but the year is young.

a fic of mine did cause a dramatic fandom schism once, in the dancing with the stars fandom no less. a splinter fan group created in exile! a mod claiming to be personal friends with the stars! everybody storming out and then blocking each other! so my fic did cause hate, but somehow i personally escaped unscathed. i didn't even get blocked. (lesson: in some spaces, rpf is encouraged until They Fuck. second lesson: if you start a fire and then stay very quiet, everyone forgets about you.)

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

i do!! i guess!! but i'm struggling with it right now and it's giving me a complex. and "what kind" is like......... vanilla het fic for the most part tbh. gauzy curtain vibes, even. basically, i have to really sit and think about whether to rate something M or E, you know?

10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?

nope!

yes, but not since the x-files days. rip geocities webrings we salute you for your years of service.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

no, but i think i'd like to! passing chapters back and forth sleepover style like "haha write your way out of THIS" would be fun. (or collaborating in a more mundane way, i guess....)

14. What’s your all time favorite ship?

john sheppard/elizabeth weir (stargate atlantis). first fic in the tag and i'm still fuckin there. three years on tv and a lifetime in my goddamn brain.

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

realistically, i'm feeling pretty down on the chances that i'll ever finish ANY wip that's longer than 20k, but the two long ones withering on the vine that i'd like to finish are a sam/jack sg1 episodic soulmate fic and "what if janeway went undercover with the maquis instead of tuvok: the novel."

16. What are your writing strengths?

stealing one of geneeste's answers because "character complexity" is a good one! i don't feel satisfied with any fic unless i feel like i have learned something new about a character, or highlighted it in a new way.

my more specific strength, according to @coraclavia, is missing-scene fics that weave through an entire series canon to make a thesis statement (they are In Love).

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

😭 i can't write anything long 😭 i really wish i were different 😭 i envy those of you with staying power who can return to a story after going to work or writing something else and keep plugging away at it. i used to write sprawling things when i was a teen, but since becoming Adult With Job now many years ago, i've totally lost that skill!!

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

haaaahahahaha. talk about a weakness. i literally couldn't bring myself to write a fic that required dialogue in Ancient from stargate, a language that -- i cannot stress this enough -- is not even real. i'm like "well maybe i'll study latin for three years and then analyze all the episodes where they speak it to reverse engineer the differences so i can write the bastardized space latin correctly" GIRL WHY. JUST FUCK IT UP.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

first completed story that i recall would have been star trek voyager in my early teens, and by the grace of rural internet and some kind of prescient sense of self-preservation, it does not live online. first internet-published fic was several years later, for the x-files. for better or worse, that one can still be found.

20. Favorite fic you’ve written?

i think pieces (stargate atlantis, sheppard/weir, catharsis through sex pollen) might be the new best, and i had a lot of fun writing erasers on pencils (stargate sg-1, clone!sam/jack, catharsis through truancy).

I’d say he should get off tumblr and think about using his considerable wealth to contribute to charities for people who make far less than him or face government suppression while he is afforded the unbelievable privilege of global travel and millions more in pay than most people will ever need. People have written rpf since the dawn of time, we have written stories about mundane things and turned them narrative. I’m not even gonna take an easy pot shot there at various books we consider normal- rpf fanfic is as old as shipping, ask historic spirk zine makers. It’s frankly not done any damage, neither has the past decade of F1 rpf when everyone remembers the fuckin boundaries

soooo yeah!!! we like to jump right into action as well but I think it's safe to say our autistic ass habits of giving exposition for everything lead to the specific outcome of starting in the middle of a scene, WITH an explanation of the scene. like we're already in the middle of something going on but also sometimes it's exposition at the same time somehow?? or like right after these first lines. idk maybe that's just me????

the way it's usually less (character does this) and more (character does this BECAUSE ____ // character is doing this and FEELING ____) feels like it's trying to give context, to me. but again idk maybe just me

TIME FOR SEÁN'S READING:

@septiccoffeefreak - "What I'm noticing here is more along the lines of just, how we almost always seem to open with a person. Usually by their actual name(s) too and not just a pronoun. I understand what you mean, Tommy, but I don't personally get that vibe? You could totally be right, of course, I just don't pick up on that. I defenitely notice, though, just how many of these are sentences where the literal first word is a name. the two exceptions to that are the pronoun "they" (which is still a person- or two people actually), and then water.

I guess the dialogue could also be considered an exception, but I don't think it counts since it also directly references us as characters.

and that's not something you necessarily have to do. You could open describing scenery or objects, or with dialogue that DOESN'T have the names of the characters in it- you could open with wind through a blade of grass or a character cursing under their breath or someone's cellphone crashing to the pavement or something. So it's definitely an "us" thing, it's a quirk of our writing style and not just normal writing. I don't know if like, we ALWAYS do this, but I do know that in these ten fics you pulled we do. I wouldn't be surprised if we did it like literally all the time as well, but I'm not going to pretend to know every first line we've ever penned to paper. or...print?? I don't fucking know, here, I'm just analyzing sentences on the internet for a tagging project.

Sorry if this ramble is kind of long, I hope it's at least interesting though??? sort of interesting? kind of interesting, in it's own way, hopefully. at least mildly, like a video you didn't turn on but aren't really reaching for the mouse/remote on to change it. What's wrong with Solomon's Crown? I didn't find it particularly bad, just kind of in the same vein as Song of Achilles, albeit with a happy ending and some fanficky things.

TSOA is Hamilton where Solomon's Crown is Miku Binder Thomas Jefferson, IMO. One is taking an interesting perspective where the other is like, playing barbies--but calling it historical fiction is disingenuous.

Song of Achilles worked because it was written by a classicist who knew how to balance the personal fiction with the thing she studied. It's also not a historical story, or RPF. The whole thesis is also, like, adjacent to the Persian Boy and uses a 'regular person' to humanize a mythologized character. Similarly to how Hamilton takes an immigrant and reclamation lens to that story.

Solomon's Crown was written by someone who could do neither, and rather than trust her audience to make their own conclusions about her RPF she wanted us to know REALLY BAD that she only approved of egalitarian wholesome yaoi and cute sweet young characters who absolutely didn't like war or conquering. It was like author intrusion to the max, I felt like someone was breathing over my shoulder. It was everyone lives AU no homophobia no racism fanfiction. Richard and Philip did not meet until one was 18 and changed the age gap to be less problematic, they removed the crusades entirely and made medieval england a largely progressive kingdom with one single homophobe who was comically evil. No scruples about fuckin' dudes, the only scruples were like "wah wah i don't want to conquer".

I'm not someone who's usually picky about historical accuracy but seriously? Just make OCs at that point. I had the same beef with Iron Widow because it removes so much of what made these real people what they were until they're not even vague shadows of who they were. I feel like too there's like...when it comes to historical tragedy an an element of adhering to the narrative tradition unless you're making it really obvious you're going to be doing otherwise (like & Juliet or something). Like everything is hurtling towards this point and always will be or whatever and if I am reading and expecting one of them to die, the genre tells me that they're going to die miserably, and suddenly without warning I see that they literally get fucking MARRIED. IN MEDIEVAL ENGLAND? I'm gonna be mad. Like TSOA doesn't work if Patroclus lived. It doesn't work like that, and so SC didn't work. I also think there's a certain commitment you should have to at least? Somewhat portraying the real figure as at least an image of themself? Making Richard--the man who is most known for being uber catholic and doing crusades--an openly bisexual seme playboy who hates war and doesn't really care about religion because you're worried about people saying you're problematic is just. WHY

Sorry monster mash guy I don’t condone people being mean, about any fic for that matter really, but I had to reply. I needed to give my takes

I’m not gonna call out any specific fics but sometimes I hate how people portray Terry because I’ve got a hyper specific idea of him that fits exactly into all of his canon behaviour and dialogue. He’s not a fucking catgirl. He’s an abusive self hating asshole with violent tendencies and the same amount of gun control as a toddler with their favourite candy.

I feel like, as a fandom, we used to be weirdly hard on dark topics. This has relaxed in recent years with the work of lugiaanimages and chocolatefrog pioneering their own respective fields of “violent gore” and “psychological horror”, and I love SKJ and Reality Leak a lot so this is really good actually.

the porn thing has become a “to each their own” too, and I’m happy about that personally, there’s a lot I can say about certain characters and how people portray them but it only really applies to 2021-2022 STW fics.

let's talk: canon events! how'd you get into the dream team? what brought you to dtblr?

oh god ok my like. origin story of how i started watching dteam is insanely convoluted so i’m going to put it under the cut and like. to preface i just need u to know i’ve never been normal about anything in my life like i am so completely incapable of having passive interests. that is really crucial to understand

ok. So. basically i’ve always been super into mcyt content, i was a Massive cube smp + cube uhc stan back when that was a thing, i was like. 12-14 at the time but i was on stan twitter, wrote rpf on wattpad, experienced the severe trauma of ccs i wrote about Finding my fic and talking about it very publicly. The whole experience. and then when cube smp started to die my overall mcyt interest heavily faded, i’ve still always been incredibly fixated on minecraft itself i used to be super into uhc and other competitive gamemodes but in terms of actually watching content creators that was like. something that kinda faded in and out i’d go through long phases of watching nothing at all sometimes for entire years then randomly get slapped by nostalgia and fall back into it and rewatch old series’, etc.

but anyway. i had other interests, i had a different main fandom, i was still on stan twitter (kpop twitter to be specific) when dream rly started blowing up and. All i ever heard abt him was negative. because i was. on kpop twitter where like everyone was just excited there was a New Most Hated Fandom on the internet so he was an extremely common punching bag and i just Solely knew of him in a negative light and i’d never actually watched him to form my own opinions because (and this sounds so absurd) i also had this very irrational Jealousy toward the like. “new wave” of mcyt stans in 2019-2020 because suddenly it was a COMMON mainstream fandom and it ABSOLUTELY WASNT back when /i/ was a teenager and at my peak obsession so therefore all i felt was very misplaced dislike because How come this massive fanbase wasn’t around when this was My interest ? anyway.

Then like. sometime still in 2020 ? my irl friend sent me a manhunt and was like u NEED to watch this (because all my irls know i am. Very abnormal about competitive minecraft content) and i was like. Huh is it time for me to finally watch this dream guy. and i watched it and well it was very inevitable i got hooked because manhunt is soooo comedically perfect in terms of how me-catered it is, it is Literally everything i could ever ask for in terms of youtube content so it was absolutely over for me and i binged the entire series over the course of like. a week. and at first i really did think i would just be a passive youtube fan, because again. all i’d ever heard about dream was that he was a Bad Person and therefore i really did Try not to get invested beyond just thinking the videos were good but ofc as soon as i finished watching every manhunt that was out at the time i moved onto other dteam videos and i just fell reallyyyyy really in love with their dynamic and it was like. MAN! i had to accept i was growing attached and i Wanted to know more abt them at this point. i watched every single video on dream’s channel by the time i accepted Okay im in too deep now i want to know more.

this is the part that is going to make me sound incredibly fuckin g crazy so i need u to just hear me out. so i started googling dream and looking at the dsmp wiki (because as a youtube-only viewer i knew Nothing about dsmp other than people on my side of twitter hating it) and i was so surprised to realize hbomb was a member i’m crying because i knew him from CUBE SMP!!!!!!! i was like whta the fuck. now i feel Obligated to care like this is my Past combining with the present… it’s like fate… so then. naturally. i Looked up like. Reasons Dream Is Problematic threads on twitter. because i was like if im going to do this i need to know what exactly i am going into here i want to know why this dude is so hated and i unironically went through every single thread and callout post i could find, looking at Every reason someone gave for hating him then looking up the original clip with full context and watching it for myself so i could make my own judgement of it and also looking into how he responded and that was how i realized Oh like 87% of this is exaggerated and the stuff that’s true is either kind of nothing or he seems to be trying to do better. And that was how i decided. He is just some guy who seems very well-meaning and is making efforts to Grow and Now i can allow myself to . watch his stream vods? i know ho w crazy this sounds im crying but u need to understand i genuinely waited to watch any vods and grow attached to his content in a non-casual way until after i was SURE no secret horrible misdeeds were going to catch me off guard and i’d realize i didn’t actually want to support him i’m fucking crying

and then naturally ijust got incredibly fixated on mcc when i discovered That and that was what led me to watching a ton of other streamers, i was never super into dsmp but i Did get very into watching non-lore dsmp vods and just. tons of vods in general. i got severely fixated on mcsr around this time too which was awesome until it Wasn’t and i made a lurker account on twitter like literally a priv with 0 followers where i only followed ccs because i didn’t want to follow them from my acct with all my kpoptwt mutuals and get Called a freak for supporting dream. i also kept up very closely with any drama/situations involving dream even before being on dttwt in any capacity because again. i just like to have full context for everything so this was like. when i was unfortunately a very active dwt2 user because that was mostly how i stayed in the loop with things and tbf at the time it was actually a pretty good place for nuanced discussion this was before it got terribly unbearable but. Yeah. i started reading heat waves “ironically” while it was ongoing like i was reading it bookclub-style with my dranti friends and pretending i knew nothing abt dream or george outside the context of the fic (I AM TERRIBLE) but i ended up getting curious about what other fics were out there and that was how i started reading dnf earnestly.

i didn’t start writing until wayyyyy later after i came out of the dream stan closet to my friend reyna (still the only one of my kpoptwt-era friends who knows i am. the way that i am) in like. mid 2021? and i got them invested in dteam too and then in december 2021 we made our ao3s + new twitter accts together and both started writing fics

as for dtblr in specific i am relatively new here i guess ! i have been a long time lurker as i’ve always preferred tumblr for fandom discussion compared to twitter but i was always too shy to actually make my own account andddd because i started on twitter and had exclusively used twitter in my previous fandom it just like. Came more naturally to me and it’s so good for fic promo i just. Accepted it. but then after october several of my friends and like at least half of my mutuals at the time all became antis and once i was back to feeling. normal about consuming fandom content in like late october early november i desperately wanted to have a place where i wasn’t being made to feel GUILTY constantly so i finally made an acct over here so i’d have at least one space where i could Talk Freely about fandom things without expecting 10 people to tell me to kms for it. (don’t worry i eventually did finally make a new priv and i’m no longer held hostage by ex-stan mutuals on twitter but it was ROUGH at the time like so many of my friends have told me they assumed i’d just lost most of my interest and was only still in the fandom for the sake of writing because i never talked abt anything anymore for so long IT WAS BAD I JUST FELT SILENCED but im free now i promise) so yeah.

but don’t worry now i am here less out of “i have nowhere else to go” necessity and actually just because i Do enjoy it and i prefer it immensely to maintwt i am so content now with basically solely talking abt fandom things here and on my privtwt and just using main for fic talk life is beautiful !

I was about to start watching season 4 but then I remembered that I forgot to talk about my thoughts on the New York Special so thats what Im doing now ig

First of all, for the first three seasons I consulted this list I found on reddit, which said that this special takes place after season 3, and then I had to find a different list for season 4 and the one I found also listed the production codes of the episodes and the specials and according to the production codes, those are considered a part of season 3 and apparently the Shanghai special takes place before the season 3 finale while the NY one takes place after ? Idk man, I guess im watching the Shanghai special instead of season 4 after this just to be sure

Anyway, I dont have a lot of detailed thoughts on this special, it just sucked. The Adrienette shit was so obnoxious and I hated it so much that it actively spoiled the angsty Ladynoir stuff and Im a sucker for that kind of shit!! I wouldve loved to enjoy that aspect of the special but I couldnt because the entire rest of this special was just Marinette being at her most Bumbling Fool around Adrien, Adrien emotionally cheating on my girl Kagami and everyone else being mindless cheerleaders for these two people they know to get together. and you thought hockey rpf was fuckin weird

I liked the idea of america and france having drastically different Superhero Cultures but the execution was really lacking and I didnt like the designs for the adult heroes, they were just very transparent knockoffs of heroes from more popular superhero franchises and not even good ones. I liked Uncanny Valley and her bird girl friend (Im so sorry, I zoned out a few times while watching and forgot their civilian names, I think UC was Aeon?), Ive seen a decent amount of black and indigenous people critise the way theyre written as well as the fact that Uncanny Valley is a robot and turns white when in superhero mode and like, Im white and its pretty late and Im getting tired so Im not getting into all that, I just wanted to mention it bc I felt that was important. On a more personal level, I did enjoy them and the way they interacted when they werent just being Adrienette cheerleaders and I quite liked their civilian designs, even if their hero forms were really lacking as well

I fucking hate everything theyre doing with the miraculous lore wise, there should only be one miracle box, there shouldnt be some organized order of the guardians etc, although I will say that the implication that america wouldve lost the revolutionary war if it wasnt for magic tickles me, I think its funny

Regarding the race, I'd actually argue that it wasn't as much the hard tires that cost Merc the win, it was RB only needing one pit stop. The softs (and a longer run on the mediums) wouldn't have made a difference, not unless Max would've pitted a second time.

So I have to disagree that Merc's strategy call was the wrong one, at that point in time.

In fact, it would've lead to a P1-P2 podium if both RBs had pitted twice. A P2-P3 podium if only Checo had pitted, like Shov later expected when it became clear that Max wouldn't. But neither one of the Red Bulls did go for a second stop, so that's what fucked us over.

Putting George or Lewis or both on softer tires wouldn't have made a difference with the pace of the Red Bulls. Not to mention that the hard tire pace looked strong in the beginning, which is why it made sense to put Lewis on them in order to chase Max. And then his first rounds were strong, which is why George's call didn't make sense to the strategy team at the time and just seemed like a risk. They do have the data that the drivers can't access during a race. It's just that the medium lasted longer than expected - and thanks to that we lost not only the win but also the double podium.

The strategy would have worked out perfectly if the Red Bulls had gone for a two stop, but they surprisingly didn't have to. Which is why Lewis' call before the race to start on the softs would've made the most sense - but you're always smarter after the damage has been done. I think we were doomed as soon as we started on the mediums, not as soon as we switched to the hards.

Okay I don’t have time to address all of this, because it’s a fuckin Monday night and you’re the first person back into my inbox without so much as a “hey mark how are you?” apparently, but I take issue with “The strategy would have worked out perfectly if the Red bulls had gone for a two stop”

Yeah, it would have.

But they didn’t.

I’d like to point out I also didn’t have an issue with Merc going to hard. It was a risky strat but had promising stability if it worked. My problem with Mercedes strategy is not that they are incapable of making a good plan.

They are paid a lot more than I, an rpf posting tumblr blog run by a queer 23 year old, am to get this stuff right. They will not make the right choices every time, and they cannot anticipate what Red bull will do every time. My problem is that whenever we make the wrong call, Mercedes seems to twiddle it’s thumbs and hope it works out. And they seem so worried about splitting their driver strategy in the hopes they won’t be accused of preferential treatment, that they then end up fucking both drivers.

This is one of countless races since the summer break where we hear Lewis insist he wanted to start on something different and was overruled (Singapore, wanting to start on used, here on softs or have George start on softs), or we hear George insist on a different tire choice based on feel and he’s ignored (Singapore, Japan, here). They don’t listen to their drivers and then when they fuck up they shrug and go “well, we couldn’t have known”. George and Lewis’ original complaints were easy to overrule with data, but at the same time as the pit wall has the data the drivers don’t, the pit wall are not the drivers and data isn’t absolute. If your driver says “I hate this tire” for 20 laps, they’re telling you “I can’t move or fight with this, I can’t do anything”.

I’m not asking for split second panic calls. We aren’t ferrari. But maybe after 30 laps of your drivers telling you they can’t move on these tyres and George having a clear pit window, you pit one. You do what Merc keep insisting they want to do, and make risky moves. Because mercs complacency in Mexico meant Redbull felt perfectly Safe from George, who was struggling with pace and back markers already, and were able to nurse mediums to the end.

If they had tried to split strat, say “okay George, your hards aren’t working, do you want to try to put on softs and TRY to catch Perez”, they may have panicked the Bulls into pitting perez and then George could have tried to fight him. It would have been less boring, and frankly if Perez couldn’t get past Lewis on mediums, he was going to struggle fighting George on level tires. Yes It could have risked Lewis, but he wasn’t going to catch max anyway without a mistake. Rather than settle for a 2/4 and hope for a SC, we could have pitted both cars and tried to push them both past perez again together for a 2/3.

Yes it would have been more risky, yes it might not have worked out, and I understand why Merc see a safe, high point total as frustrating but acceptable. But I also hate this weekly game of “well we thought it would work ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ “

I do not think it was the worst strat in the world, either, it was frustrating but sensible. In fact, while I have critisim in hindsight, I see it’s value as a plan when accounting for mistakes, safety cars and yes, Red Bull fucking pitting. I also advocate for split stratting here, but see the value in keeping both drivers level to prevent a ZV style torrent of abuse and accusations that one driver is being favoured.

Perhaps I maybe didn’t include effective nuance in my 23:00 headache induced shitposts as I commiserated a lost double podium and a miserable looking Lewis. I’ll be sure to fix that next time, and not, as I did today, make funny memes you now don’t deserve about it.

advice on how to write. oh boy. oh man. well i can try. i will do my best. i will also try to be brief but we all know how that song goes

update from having finished answering this: alright. okay. this is not only long, but decidedly english teacher-y. i’m sorry that i am the way that i am. this is what you get for asking a leo for writing advice. am i joking? maybe. maybe not. anyway. this post got away from me in a big way so here’s a read more. warning: LONG post under the cut.

1. study your characters. for RPF like the band stuff i write, that literally means watching interviews, watching them perform, seeing how they interact with each other, picking up on their mannerisms (behavior) - what they do with their hands, if they repeat themselves or stutter when they talk, the quality of their voice when they're talking about different things, and so on. also keep track of things they mention a lot in interviews especially about each other - for example jack has mentioned before that alex has an annoying habit of twirling his hair when he zones out. that kind of thing. IMPORTANT NOTE!: you don’t have to use all of this information. just like studying for anything, you collect all the information you can and then you parse through it and use whatever you think will contribute or be relevant to your story.

2. remember that characters are people. or at least they’re representing people, which is an important distinction (see #3). still, considering that your characters are people can be a helpful way to get out of your head. see, characters are supposed to be archetypical, and fulfill a role, and say certain things in certain ways and never really deviate from that. but people are highly unpredictable and behave in random ways for random reasons and have thought processes that are unfathomable. people will just do fuckin’ whatever. if you’re worried that your characters aren’t behaving in a believable way, keep in mind that you’re trying to make your characters represent people, and people’s behavior is justifiable any number of ways. people just do shit.

3. remember that characters are not people. sike! no but seriously, this is just as important to remember. unfortunately, no matter how hard you try, characters are never going to be people. that’s a good thing for stories, though. characters can pick up on nuance in senses that people can’t - they can distinguish between different facial expressions, different smells, different sounds - BUT ONLY INSOFAR AS IT MOVES THE STORY ALONG. in other ways, characters are ridiculously oblivious. you can use this to your advantage. in fact, a lot of the time, you have to. if your character notices right away that someone is flirting with him, then you can’t write a 30k slow burn, for example. characters don’t do that thing humans do where they go “what?” but then halfway through the re-explanation they register what’s been said. pretty much everything characters say has meaning. (by this i don’t mean semantic meaning, i mean significance - characters don’t really just say “what?” because they didn’t hear what someone said, they say “what?” because they can’t believe it or they don’t understand it or they refuse to understand it. characters never seem to run into the didn’t-hear-them problem. must be nice.)

characters can do whatever you want or need them to do, because you’re in charge of them. (sometimes this doesn’t feel true - mine do all kinds of shit and i just have go “well alright then” - but it is true.) they are gears in a story. you decide when and how they turn.

4. dialogue is your friend. i am super super biased here, because i looove writing dialogue. if you talk to sam about this i’m sure she would say that description and narration are the ways to go. but you came to me, so i get to say that dialogue is god. i don’t want to say that dialogue is the only method of communication (i know nonverbal communication is real), but dialogue is the fastest and most effective method of communication, and by extension, the most effective way to advance relationships between characters. now. obviously there are exceptions. if characters are kissing, they’re probably not doing a lot of talking. if they’re trying to be undercover or discreet, they’re more likely to rely on gestures and facial expressions than speaking. if you’re writing a very peaceful scene, you might not want to undercut it by adding a lot of chit-chat. but i maintain that dialogue is the best way to move a story along, for a few reasons. 

first, at least for me, too much description is just tiring. depending on how skillful the writer is (sam), i can read a fair amount before i hit my limit, but unlike in mean girls, the limit DOES exist. you don’t want to over-describe the world (see #5). second, i find that dialogue is a really really good indicator of a person’s character. this is especially true and relevant in fanfiction, which is a lot more character-driven than original fiction in many ways. also, in a sec i’m gonna talk about showing [not/and] telling, which is every english teacher’s bitch, but dialogue is a really good way of showing who a person is and also a good way to establish facts about the universe. you could just narrate and be like “Jack hated waking up early,” and that works and in many cases it’s perfectly legit. but you could also do something like this:

“What the fuck,” Jack mumbled, still half asleep. “You better have a really fucking good reason to be waking me up this early. Like someone better have fucking died.”

and sometimes that’s just a more fun way to say it. (for the record you can also show AND tell here! there’s no reason why you can’t have this line of dialogue and then a line in the narration confirming how very much jack is not a morning person!)

the last reason why i am particularly fond of dialogue is because i am also particularly fond of communication, which is a preference thing. let’s face it, guys: characters aren’t gonna communicate if they’re not literally actually talking to each other. dialogue means talking to each other. talking to each other means solving problems, fixing (or creating) conflicts, understanding each other better. i love communication, ergo, i love dialogue. And You Should Too. 

5. describe the world, but don’t over-describe. i opened this fic earlier and it was like “jack was excited to wake up to go to his first class at the university of baltimore” and i just. i was like is this really relevant. do i really need to know this. and i never found out because i closed the fic but in my defense it was on wattpad and i had only opened it out of curiosity. look. there are three ways to use details in fic. (a) introduce them right away (b) introduce them when they become relevant or (c) don’t introduce them at all. let me give you some examples. 

(a) say your character A (i’m using jack because i’m used to him) wakes up. he’s in his room in his house off-campus. character B (rian) walks into the room. this might be a good time to explain that rian is his housemate. to that point: “show not tell” is a good rule, but sometimes “show and tell” is just as good. e.g.: 

Rian walks in, holding Jack’s Green Day shirt and looking irritated. That’s really nothing new; Rian looks irritated at Jack roughly once a day. Being housemates for a year will do that to a friendship.

boom, now you’ve let everyone know they live together without throwing it in their face, and you’ve also told everyone that these two guys are friends and have been friends for at least a year but probably longer. you showed it by having rian walking in holding jack’s shirt - usual housemate behavior - but you also told it in a subtle way that established the relationship and some kind of history between these two. well done.

(b) sometimes you want a certain detail to make an impact. this is the kind of thing you hold onto and don’t specify, and in certain cases you leave the reader wondering, “well what about x?” and then when you finally explain x they go ohhhhhhhhhh. yknow. the italicized oh. consider the following:

(A)

“Alex is in my bio class,” Rian says, referring to Jack’s ex-boyfriend of last year.

Jack frowns. “So? Why should I care?”

“He’s my lab partner,” Rian says. “I have to spend a lot of time with him.”

“I don’t care what you and Alex do,” Jack says. “But you should know he sucks at bio.”

Rian gives Jack a look. “First of all, that’s not true, he’s incredibly smart. And second, I’m telling you as a courtesy, because I thought you might not want your ex-boyfriend hanging around our house after he broke your fucking heart.”

(B)

“Alex is in my bio class,” Rian says.

Jack frowns. “So? Why should I care?”

“He’s my lab partner,” Rian says. “I have to spend a lot of time with him.”

“I don’t care what you and Alex do,” Jack says. “But you should know he sucks at bio.”

Rian gives Jack a look. “First of all, that’s not true, he’s incredibly smart. And second, I’m telling you as a courtesy, because I thought you might not want your ex-boyfriend hanging around our house after he broke your fucking heart.”

the only difference between these two excerpts (which i just wrote lol they’re not from anything real) is that the second one doesn’t explain who alex is right away. that makes it way more interesting when rian reveals who alex is a few lines later. magic.

(c) take this college au that we’ve established here. where does it take place, you ask? easy answer: it doesn’t matter. you don’t need to say what school they’re at. this will make your job easier, because then no one can fact check you, and it also means you don’t have to decide what school they’re at. but even if you do decide, it’s not usually necessary to say. believe me, you can go thousands of words without ever needing to specify what school they’re at. you know why? because it doesn’t matter. and no one cares. and as soon as you specify in canon that they’re at a particular school, you are bound to be accurate to everything that school does, and that makes your job way more difficult than it needs to be. as hazel once said, work smarter, not harder. 

6. adverbs are also your friend. (yknow, words that describe verbs, typically ending in -ly, like “loudly” or “angrily” or “smoothly”.) ESPECIALLY when it comes to dialogue tags. (dialogue tags are the things you add to dialogue to say who’s talking and how they’re talking - like “he said” or “he whispered” or “he earnestly explained” or whatever). a lot of the writing advice you’ll see nowadays will usually guide you away from overusing dialogue tags other than the classic “says/said” and i STRONGLY concur with that advice. things like yelled, cried, mumbled, snapped - these are very good in moderation, when you’re really trying to emphasize the way a person is speaking. the more you use them, the less impact they have. in most cases, a simple “he said [adverb]” will do. instead of “he snapped” consider “he said curtly/sharply/coldly.” instead of “he mumbled” consider “he said quietly/clumsily/softly.” I WANT TO MAKE IT CLEAR THAT THESE ARE NOT DIRECT SYNONYMS. every word has a nuanced and slightly different meaning and that is the BEAUTY of the english language!!!! all i’m saying is that in many cases, a verb can be replaced with an adverb to achieve roughly the same effect, without making the reader feel like they’re scanning a thesaurus.

and speaking of a thesaurus: it’s not cheating to use outside resources like thesaurus.com to help you come up with words. i fuckin love thesaurus.com. i use that shit all the time for everything. i use it when i’m writing emails. i used it just now to write that last paragraph. thesaurus.com is your BEST friend.

7. grammar. (and spelling but that’s really a given.) unfortunately if i tried to teach you all of the essential rules of grammar this post would exceed tumblr’s previously-nonexistent word count limit. so i’m not gonna teach you any of them. this is just a general point to suggest that if/when you’re writing, have someone you trust, with a good grasp of grammar, look over it. of course it doesn’t have to be perfect or AP style or anything like that. readers will overlook a certain amount of grammar mistakes and every reader has a different threshold. but in general, as a grammar geek and former journalism editor-in-chief, i have a duty to my grammurai code to preach the importance of grammar in writing. good grammar does not necessarily mean good writing and vice versa, bad grammar does not necessarily mean bad writing, but bad grammar makes good writing a lot harder to read, and in some cases will even obscure your actual meaning. so please, have someone read it. for the record this is me offering up my services. i am very good at fixing grammar. i have lots of weaknesses in writing but grammar is one of my strengths. please prioritize grammar. thank you for coming to my ted talk.

okay so now that i’ve said all of this shit and pretended to be an expert and embodied everyone’s tenth grade english teacher, let me add one very important disclaimer:

none of this is always relevant.* writing is an art, not a science. you are never going to be following all of the rules, all of the time. you shouldn’t. it’s good to know the basics of constructing a plot, establishing a character, showing and/not telling, moving the story along. but a lot of this advice is really subjective and heavily influenced by my writing experience and habits and tendencies and preferences, and those are simply not generalizable to the world. i am a sample size of one and science dictates that that means my results cannot be statistically significant. i am just some guy. earlier i said you don’t want to over-describe the world. but maybe you do! maybe you’re really into worldbuilding and you want people to know what they’re getting into. maybe you’re like sam, and you just don’t feel as confident in your dialogue skills but you love painting word pictures. i said that adverbs are your friend, but maybe you just prefer to use verbs. maybe you don’t want ANY dialogue tags and you want the reader to interpret the dialogue based on context and content. i said that characters aren’t people and they won’t behave like people, but maybe you’re trying to write hyper-realistic characters. maybe you’re just going for believability over narrative. WHATEVER. the point is, rules are made to be broken. no one is going to have The Answer for How To Write Good because there isn’t just one answer. every single writing rule has exceptions and you can be that exception as many times as you want.

*except grammar. grammar is fucking always relevant.

i hope any of this advice was helpful to you, even though i english teacher-ed the fuck out of it. and for what it’s worth, i approached this as if you were a relatively novice writer, but i know absolutely jack shit about your writing prowess and experience and habits. so maybe you already know all of this and none of what i’ve said is helpful at all. if you have a more specific problem, i would be happy to try and help. if you’re hoping for more specific feedback, i’d have to read something of yours first - but again, happy to try and help. i don’t know if you can tell but i loooove writing and english and grammar and all of this shit and it would be my honor. i have now spoken so long that james madison himself is begging me to shut up so i’ll stop here but thank you for coming by and giving me the opportunity to expatiate a shit ton. and GOOD LUCK i forgot the most important advice of writing which is HAVE FUN LOVE WHAT YOU WRITE AND WRITE WHAT YOU LOVE OKAY BYE

sometimes! I don’t write a lot of smut because I actively dislike writing it, but the smut I do write is super super soft and sappy and full of emotions lol

I respond to almost all of my comments! comments i won’t respond to: negative comments, unsolicited criticism, comments that aren’t relevant to the fic itself, comments simply asking for more 

I love love love responding to comments! I love every single comment that I get and I want to show how much I appreciate getting them, and personally I think responding to comments is the only way to do that! everyone has different comment philosophies, but for me, if someone is taking the time to comment on my fic like I so badly want them to, I think it’s important to respond to show my appreciation! 

10) Have you ever received hate on a fic?

aha YEAH I DO. this past weekend I actually got a number of shitty comments and had to file two ao3 abuse reports for harrasment (: I love it

I am no stranger to hate comments. I write copious amounts of age difference fic. I write copious amounts of incest. I am not going to apologize nor am I going to feel bad for enjoying either.

ughhh I sure as heck hope not!

Yes! I have a number of them :) I always always do my best to make sure it’s linked to the original fic, AND that I add a tag noting that there’s a translation!

I have made a few attempts! the only successful attempt is there's nothing i wouldn't do to make you feel my love which is a collaboration with @flightinflame, not quite a co-write!

god okay this is such a good question! imma ramble about a few so bear with me here! (i may have 700 posted works but I also have a few hundreds wips & ideas floating around in my gdrive, too)

gone & past - this is a starrish wip i’d started in 2017. I ended up deleting it from ao3 to rewrite it and never got there, but I have about 20k of content! I built my home, inside of you - thorki human au with college jock thor and high school dancer loki. i’ve got a start and nothing else Sheriff Stilinski Gets Some Sweet Sweet Lovin’ - massive wip where... well, the sheriff fucks his way through the entire pack. I want to write it but. trans allison au - this is an au where allison is trans and that changes the entire season 1 canon. it features stallison, petopher, and a looooooong ass outline that will never exist beyond my wips You Fill My Heart (With Such a Gentle Love) - this is a stetopher a/b/o au with pregnant omega stiles and alpha pair petopher falling in love. it started as a labour of love to someone I no longer have in my life. I have about 30k, a full outline, but idk. makes me sad to think about it they slipped briskly into an intimacy from which they never recovered - this is my big x-men first class rewrite that I honestly don’t think i’ll ever finish. I have a few thousand words, a full outline, but no love lost for cherik so. doubtful Physiotherapy (I'll Be Your Baby) - this was a fic I was SO excited about, and then it kinda flopped and stayed a wip because I didn’t have a plan or the motivation to finish it. it’s a winterspider human au with amputee bucky and science twink peter that I adore the premise of but who knows breathing you in chapter 2 - I have a massive second chapter planned for this fic but the first did so good so fast I am way too intimidated to write more in case everyone hates it lmao

16) What are your writing strengths?

ughhhhh I hate answering this because I have, like, seriously bad imposter syndrome around my writing BUT I do think i’m able to weave poignant backstory into narration & i write strong, distinctive narrative voices!

literally I can’t write settings at all. I don’t know how people vividly describe settings but I absolutely cannot do that and it’s one of the reasons I haven’t delved into original fiction. I need to write the town my characters live in?? fuck that imma just use a location we’ve seen on screen & let readers fill in the blanks lmao

I am also shit at long fic. I don’t have the mind for long and interesting plots, and I don’t have the focus to write long fic (which is why every long fic i’ve ever posted has taken me literal years to complete smh).

18) What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

I like it! both as a reader and as a writer. as a writer, I generally only use a few words, or small sentences that can be understood by context, and I generally don’t

miss missing you, novocaine, and chicago is so two years ago

SO miss missing you is a song i generally dont think about? for me personally it just feels very straight forward in terms of production and vocals, especially compared to most other songs on the album. that said, this song is lyrically A Lot. (side note, this is a song people cite as a p/etekey song which irritates me not bc i dont like rpf (i dont, but i cant stop anyone so as long as they arent harassing the people involved and are realistic, its eh) but because its like. maybe it was at least in part about the woman he married and had a kid with and then divorced despite being very adamant he didnt want to and still loved her. like what do you think "baby you were my picket fence/i miss missing you now and then" means.)

that said, i think its got a lot of very stand out lyrics and moments in the production, and i think about the Weird Beat that runs under it a lot? like its very electronic and thats not personally my thing, but it just has this Vibe thats like "this is a story that begins and ends the same way no matter what i want" which is just interesting. like "dont panic, no not yet. i know im the one you want to forget. cue all the love to leave my heart. its time for me to fall apart." like its very much like theres a performance. i know we are parting ways, and i want to want to do that, and im trying to act that out. theres also this undercurrent of "you literally were bad for me. like "making eyes at this husk around my heart" which is like, theyre empty but thats what the muse wants. its a song i need to put more thought into, but i do like what it has to say.

novocaine. ironically it makes me feel everything. like. hhhhhhhhh the opening line being "this is a black, black ski mask songs" feels very much like a way to be like "no white people allowed go home" and theres like. a lot packed into the lyrics but my own reading of it is mostly bc i do close readings of this one. like literally im one step away from analysing this song line by line here fhshhf but i shouldnt!!! i have one more song to fet to after this...

a line i wanna give special attention to as anyone who has heard me talk about novocaine is expecting is the bridge, because it hurts so fuckin much. "some day the valleys gonna swallow me whole" in which the valley represents california, or white culture. "i feel like a photo thats been overexposed" because overexposure lightens everything in a picture, and makes it look white. literally this line breaks me apart and breaks the pieces even more.

chicago is so 2 years ago. ive said this a few times, i dont listen to tttyg very much. its a solid first album! but its very vague and discordant with its themes. that said, i think its a solid song on growing up and out of where you came from, and specifically moving on from people who no longer work for you. theres also a lot of spite in these words? like it very much feels like chicago represents going back to people who are bad for you. like "loaded guns and loaded friends are like loaded guns to our hears" and "every little pat on the shoulder for attention fails to mention i still hate you" it reminds me so much of the trouble i had actually genuinely getting out of an abusive situation due to island proximity. theres also this vague sense of like "you owe me an apology for having the audacity to be." and its just. fascinating. i think the lyricism on tttyg has really stand out moments, and this is one such example

1 ) How many works do you have on AO3?

currently 17, will probably add no 18 tonight. there’s also a bunch only published on ff.net (from when i wasn’t on AO3 yet) and yet another motherload of self-indulgent shit rotting on my hard drive.

2 ) What’s your total AO3 word count?

80781 words, about 60k of that from this year alone. i took a major break from writing 2010ish and really just got back into it during quarantine last year.

boy, this is a hard one. I’m not all that good with writing angst but i guess if I had to pick something i’d say don’t give up now (there’s already so much at stake), mostly because of the character’s frame of mind in general and the impending threat of invading a foreign country to overthrow a dictator the next day while being mentally wrecked.

i’m not against it but i’ve never actually done it.

not that I recall. but i guess it wouldn’t be the worst thing, i struggle way more with getting no feedback at all.

jeez, i don’t know. i’ve never really stuck with just one fandom, i’m a notorious multi-fandom multi-shipper. i’m the kind of person who watches eps of 4 different shows in one day and yells at the tv about all of them.

we make a long way from easy lovin‘ look good, baby. i was honestly so invested in this project but then they completely torpedoed this pairing in canon in the worst possible way and i kinda lost the drive to keep writing. i have posted it to my graveyard collection of unfinished stuff for now but i don’t think i will finish it, sadly.

15 ) What are your writing strengths?

creating emotions, hitting you in the feels, or so I’ve been told. i like to think that (given that English is not my first language) just reaching the kind of level i’m at now can be considered a strength.

16 ) What are your writing weaknesses?

run-on sentences, endless run-on sentences. they serve a purpose SOMETIMES but mostly it’s just me and my rambly writing style. and repetition. i have actually started searching my writing docs for specific phrases while editing to catch most of them and rephrase. not being able to include just a bit of angst without it turning into an existential crisis for the character and me. and the worst thing I keep doing that i’m not able to stop is writing shit out of order. i start with the beginning, then some idea for the middle pops up, then I write the end and then I have to somehow weave it all together, it’s so inconvenient and annoying.

17 ) What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

i speak a few languages (or you know, at least can understand/write/read them) so as long as i’m sure that it’s correct and it fits the story, I’m all for it!! language kink ftw.

18 ) What was the first fandom you wrote for?

it was either music or hockey rpf, i’m not even sure anymore at this point, that was like 20 years ago. nothing that ever got published anywhere lol

19 ) What’s your favorite fic you’ve written?

my name engraved on your heart, hands down. that is my beloved, my baby, the project nearest and dearest to my heart. i can actually read this and enjoy it without nitpicking my own writing at every turn and i’m just so happy with the overall vibe of it. it’s like a niche in a niche of a fandom thing though, so i get that it doesn’t resonate as strongly with others as it does with me but it is my favorite of favorites.

honorable mention to the house don’t fall (when the bones are good), though, because it’s what got me back into writing and it was my biggest (published) project and that fix-it needed to be written.

Shipping Real People

Fffff okay. This is not going to be a popular statement. The Pre-TL;DR is: Please be careful when shipping real people. It’s kind of a dangerous game. 

Most people who read my blog know that I’m mostly okay with gen Real-Person Fic (AKA RPF) just because I’ve really never met anyone who wouldn’t want themselves depicted like, riding a kickass galactic unicorn or something. But there’s a couple situations where if the people you’re writing about are actual real people, you need to think twice about writing those things, especially when they get into NSFW territory.

First situation is pretty obvious. Don’t write hate fic. If the entire purpose of your writing is to depict a person meeting their violent end, then don’t. Don’t do it. Not ever. 

Second is shipping. 

It’s at this point where a lot of people check out and start sending anons that are like “DON’T TELL ME WHAT I CAN FUCKIN WRITE, AERYN” but I seriously urge you to keep reading. I’m not going to tell you to stop, but you need to hear this. 

The world is wrapped up in sexuality. It’s almost disturbing to see as an ace person, but sex is everywhere. There’s nothing more important to humanity at this point in time than what is acceptable for “girls,” what is acceptable for “boys,” and who those boys and girls can be with. Most of it is extremely heteronormative, but not all.

To many people, nothing is more intimate or private than their sex life. This is a cultural construct, but it’s extremely pervasive through almost all developed areas. And you really can’t just say “fuck cultural constructs!” and expect everyone in the world to be like “hey yeah! You’re right!” I mean hell, we can’t even get people to agree that actual deadly viruses are bad. You’re not going to get the world to believe that sex and sexuality are no big deal overnight. 

The biggest problem is when fixations on fictional shipping bleed out into real life, and the discomfort it causes the people involved. Fans telling their faves they’re hot together, or that they should kiss, or that they should do other things together is not something you should ever, EVER be doing. Sending fanfic or NSFW fanart is also terrible. And due to the nature of the internet, it’s almost impossible for this stuff to NOT get back to the people involved.

You remember that video where someone was like “this is one grain of rice, this is 10, this is 100,” etc etc, all the way to 10 billion? And how much more unfathomably large 10 billion was to just one billion? I’m bringing this up because our minds cannot comprehend numbers that large without seeing a visual aid. It’s impossible to see that millions of people read and write fanfic and comprehend just how enormous that number is. 

Point is, it’s impossible to get everyone to agree to keep shipping in writing only and not share it with those they’re writing about. There’s innumerable factors that lead to making actors and musicians uncomfortable or ending friendships. Someone, somewhere, is going to fuck it up. Some fan will press their extremely x-rated fic into the arms of their fave when they see them at a meet’n’greet. Some let-me-speak-to-your-manager mom will find NSFW fic online, save it all, and forward it to the person depicted just to say LOOK WHAT PEOPLE ARE DOING WITH YOUR NAME!!!

And you know? Some people are totally okay with this. I happen to know of one who finds it amusing. But a lot of people aren’t, and if you’re going to write really raunchy fiction, you’re also going to have to accept the fact that you run the risk of seriously hurting someone. 

Because a lot of celebrities are extremely hung up on their image and how people perceive them, and for good reason. You can’t say or do certain things once you gain fame. You lose fans. You lose jobs. Sometimes that’s for a good reason. Other times, it’s because vast swaths of people are ignorant sheep and will actually avoid a celebrity because of how they are perceived in media. 

There’s still an incredible number of terrible people in the world who will use anything to attack and hurt. And while we’re waiting and making efforts to change the current cultural bullshit to be more open and accepting, you--again--cannot force the world to change by writing shipping RPF. You can’t write it and say “this should be acceptable and no one should be bothered by this,” because while that’s true, this is also true: your writing has the potential to harm.

The real TL;DR: All I can say is to be careful. Think about what you’re writing. Make sure you don’t get so deep into this fictional AU you’ve created that you feel you have a right to impose it on your faves. The real people you’re writing about have the right to be upset about what you’re writing if it’s sent to them and/or found.
