Because someone is on the ball, Turner Classic is playing (among other WWII films) The Great Dictator today.

If you haven't seen it, please do. It was produced by Charlie Chaplin in the late 1930s, when it became clear that the war was going to happen, and came out in 1940 after it had started. Essentially, Chaplin realized that his famous mustache was about to be usurped forever by a fascist, and that fascist was going to kill a lot more people in the future than he had already.

It's a parody, made before the worst horrors of the Nazi regime were known to the general public, so there is discomfort here (if you've seen Disney's Der Fuhrer's Face, you'll get the idea), but the movie ends with Chaplin essentially saying "fuck it, no one else seems to be speaking out about this and I'm going to use my platform to do that."

For context, this character is a Jew who has been mistaken for the dictator (for obvious mustache-related reasons), and has been sent onstage at a rally to give a speech. Instead of trying to impersonate Hitler, he says what he really thinks. And keep in mind, Chaplin was coming out of semi-retirement for this. It was the first time most people had ever heard him speak, and this is what he said:

Tag teaming important or tense conversations/debates as a system is something that can be so special.... Hell yeah we are working together to accomplish our goals.

Like even when we aren't able to make our points clearly despite our efforts it's still nice to try and help cover for each other's weaknesses and to help each other.

I was trying to talk about politics with my family and was getting frustrated because I couldn't word my things right or explain myself good, so Seán explained it FOR me because he's better at wording things. (I can't translate my thoughts or beliefs into words very well even if I know the logic internally?? Like actually saying them in a sentence in a way that gets it across to the other person is HARD and I get frustrated.) that is teamwork bayBEE.....

It's sad to see several of the urban dictionary definitions of sysmed. Why can't the myth of "Endogenic systems fake DID/OSDD" just die already? Literally no endogenic systems I have seen (and I'm very active in plural communities) has ever made that claim. In fact, endogenic systems usually do a lot to tell the world that they don't have a dissociative disorder. Where did sysmeds even get the idea from? It's just incomprehensible to me.

They got the idea from other sysmeds. 😜

Okay, to give a more serious answer, society has a long history of seeing any neurodivergence as a mental illness to be treated. Especially any involving hallucinations. This mentality is what made it necessary to form the Hearing Voices Network in the 80s in order to counter that.

The DSM-IV didn't include the "distress or impairment" criterion that was added in the DSM-V that implicitly suggests you can have the other symptoms of the disorder in a non-pathological way.

By the time the DSM-V did come out in 2013, it was pretty ingrained in the minds of the sysmeds that the only way to have those symptoms was for you to have a disorder.

Even after the World Health Organization's ICD-11 was released and very explicitly included the "boundaries with normality" which stated you can have multiple "distinct personality states" without a disorder, with normality being understood in a psychiatric context to refer to a lack of a pathological disorder, the myth that all multiplicity is pathological still persists.

It persists because it's rooted in this longstanding sanism that has been passed down from generation of sysmed to generation of sysmed.

It doesn't matter if it's true or not. It doesn't matter that there's no longer any basis to believe all multiplicity is pathological. This false belief has become TRADITION for sysmeds.
