Living with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) can be challenging, especially after experiencing a long and stressful period in life, coupled with the removal of the gallbladder. It took me two years to finally start managing the flare ups that have become my daily struggle in the past two years since i had my surgery. However, there is hope in managing IBS symptoms and finding relief. Adding the omega in my supplement routine made a huge difference in my overall health.My gut is happy.
Zinc is a vital mineral that plays a crucial role in various bodily functions, including digestion and immune system support. Studies have shown that individuals with IBS may have lower zinc levels, which can contribute to worsened symptoms. By supplementing with zinc, you can potentially restore the balance and alleviate IBS-related discomfort. The pharmacist suggested it to me several months ago calling it the supplement of the future. It helps with the healing and inflammation and enhances the benefits the other supplements are providing.
B vitamins, particularly B-complex, are essential for maintaining optimal gut health. These vitamins help convert food into energy, support the nervous system, and aid in the production of healthy red blood cells. When it comes to IBS, B-complex vitamins can help regulate digestion, reduce stress, and improve overall gut function. The one bellow I found to be the best.
B1, also known as thiamine, vitamin B1 is a crucial nutrient that supports the nervous system and helps convert carbohydrates into energy. In the context of IBS, B1 can help alleviate symptoms such as fatigue, brain fog, and digestive issues. By supplementing with B1, individuals may experience improved energy levels and reduced IBS-related discomfort. It is also very effective if you are diagnosed with SIBO.

By ensuring adequate vitamin D levels through supplementation, individuals may experience reduced inflammation and improved IBS symptoms. My doctor measured my vitaamin D levels which were a bit on the low side and supplemented me with 5000u of vitamin D.
Magnesium is a mineral that plays a vital role in muscle relaxation and nerve function. In the context of IBS, magnesium citrate can help alleviate constipation, a common symptom experienced by individuals with IBS. By promoting regular bowel movements, magnesium citrate can provide relief and improve overall gut function. The Magnesium Citrate is gentle on the stomach lining and thats why this is the one that is recommended.

A few ways to maintain gut health from a tummy ache survivor: The gut and the brain are way more heavily connected than we thought. Having chronic deficiencies in your gut bacteria is highly co-morbid with adhd, and I believe it also is with autism. This causes tummy aches, unpleasant bowel movements, and other GI issues.
Probiotics = real, not a health scam. You want a variety of different bacteria. The more the better. My staples are fermented cabbage(sauerkraut and kimchi) and probiotic yogurt. Green tea also has trace amounts of probiotics. If I'm feeling indulgent, I'll splurge for some kombucha. Actual supplements are the best way to go, but they're kinda out of my price range atm. Basically go for fermented things!
You also want to make sure you're feeding your gut bacteria. If you aren't eating enough of a varied diet(fruits+veggies) your best little inner friends will start to die out. This means it's harder to get the nutrients you need. Thankfully, store-bought is fine!
I found a huuuuuge improvement in my chronic pain and energy levels after bacteriamaxxing. I strongly recommend bacteriamaxxing.
Also, you're(royal you) almost definitely not eating enough fruits and veggies. Get em in wherever you can! People joke about their nachos being "healthy" because of the salsa but like. Enough salsa is actually a serving of fruit! It isn't "cheating". Onions, shallots, and garlic are vegetables. Putting them in your eggs adds some vital vitamins.
Another thing is I recommend learning what different things(carbs, proteins, sugars) do for your body and preparing for the day with them. Example: eating a lot of sugar all at once can spike your blood sugar and make you feel low energy later in the day. Taking little sips of sugar(especially a natural sugar like in a fruit juice-- your hunter-gatherer body loves that shit) or sucking on a piece of candy while you work can improve focus. This goes doubly for folks with adhd-- you, biomechanically, have a sugar-starved brain. Give it little sips of sugar to run on. That tip comes from my therapist.
Searching for nutritious food tips online is a nightmare I don't care about losing weight I care about feeding my body what it needs to feel good!! RAHHH!!!!

Difference between GERD and Acid Reflux: People often confuse GERD with acid reflux. Acid reflux is a symptom, i.e., a backwash of stomach acid, while GERD is a chronic condition that results when acid reflux becomes more frequent.
Causes and risk factors
Anatomical Factors:
GERD can stem from anatomical quirks. A weak lower esophageal sphincter (LES) is often the culprit. This muscle acts as a gatekeeper, and when it’s not doing its job, acid slips through.
Lifestyle and dietary influences:  
Think about your habits—smoking, heavy meals, or that nightly glass of wine. They might seem harmless, but these are prime triggers for GERD. I used to grab coffee on an empty stomach every morning, and it wreaked havoc on my digestion.
Medical Conditions Associated with GERD:  
Certain conditions, like obesity or pregnancy, can also make you more prone to GERD. If you have a hiatal hernia, the chances of developing GERD are even higher.
Symptoms and diagnosis:
Common Symptoms of GERD:  Heartburn is the indication, but GERD isn’t just about a burning chest. You might experience regurgitation, a chronic cough, or even a sore throat. Pay attention to these signs, it may be your body’s way of waving a red flag.
Complications and Warning Signs: Ignoring GERD can lead to serious issues like esophagitis or Barrett’s esophagus, conditions that can elevate your risk of esophageal cancer. Don’t brush off persistent symptoms.
Diagnostic Methods and Tests: If you suspect GERD, getting a proper diagnosis is key. Endoscopy and pH monitoring are common procedures your doctor might suggest to confirm the condition.
Medicines that can cure GERD:
Triphala guggul tablet: Triphala guggul tablet is a blend of three fruits (Amla, Haritaki, and Bibhitaki). It helps in balancing the digestive system, reducing acidity, and promoting regular bowel movements. It also aids in the healing of the esophagus lining.

 Animal Naturopathy and Its Importance
When I look around my surroundings, read newspapers, and watch news channels, I feel that even though we as humans are born with mind and intelligence, the ability to protect ourselves and detect danger, we couldn’t make it through illness.Covid-19 as a deadly disease that emerged in the year 2020, taught all of us how a virus can halt life. There were thousands of cases where people didn’t even have any symptoms but were found infected. As a pet parent, I was always concerned for my dog’s health and safety.
 Animals do have brains, I believe but they can’t express their problems with speech. This made me start doing research about how I can keep my dog safe and healthy. After going through multiple articles, 
I came across the term “Animal Naturopathy”. I have read about Naturopathy used to treat human beings with different types but this was new to me with respect to animals. What I understood with this term was about taking care of animals not only when they are ill and infected, but about their overall well-being, overall health, and nutrition.

Certain studies show that animals respond well to natural treatments rather than any drugs or medicines. It’s a great thought with respect to animal care but then a question popped into my mind- “What can I do for my dog without even visiting any naturopathy center?”
This question was very obvious and basic for me because I wanted to know more about this naturopathy type and how I can take care of my dog at home. 
I further read that the choice of food we opt for our pets doesn’t only create an impact on them but also on their genes and their future upcoming generations.
If the quality and preferences of food are not appropriate, then it would result in the rapid aging as well as degeneration of animals. Rather than opting for packaged food, I started exploring organic foods for my dog ( I have even started consuming organic and fresh food after the pandemic then why not for my dog). Some food options which I went through were pastured pigs as well as poultry, wildly caught seafood, sea plants, herbs grown organically in fields, eggs of free-range birds, berries grown organically, etc. These choices are not only beneficial to our pets but are also contributing to and supporting the farmers. Such types of foods which are organic and chemical free will not only help the pets maintain their health but would also contribute to correcting their genetic biology. 
Naturopathy is a wide term and also identified 10 important needs or what can be called doctors, that are important for our health as well as the health of our pets. These needs help us in maintaining a good and optimized body, help in detoxification and repair of body cells and tissues, and also healing on a consistent basis. These needs include water, air, diet, earth and sun grounding, mental poise, exercise, instinct, fasting, sleep, and rest. I further read about the side effects of the packaged foods which we all have been giving to our pets. 
These foods may result in multiple diseases including allergies, itching, irritable bowel issues, chronic diseases, poor digestion, behavioral and emotional tensions, and a lot more. I wish I had known this before !! 
I even read that multiple pet species are exposed to indoor air pollution. It is very important for our pets also to have ventilated areas full of fresh air. Air purifiers work great for human as well as pet health. 
Sun is a great source of Vitamin D and is vital for both animals and humans. A good morning walk sounds great to me for my dog and even myself. I have also planned after reading that playing some good running games with my dog is good for his physical health and would work as an exercise (for me too). I have always kept my dog as my child and will always take care of his nap and rest timing. It has its own importance in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. My personal idea which works great with my pet is giving him warm and untimely hugs. Even they are meant to feel safe, loved, and protected.

8 Foods For Better Thyroid Function
When you start your thyroid function journey you will inevitably realize and physically be able to feel how some foods affect your body. I feel so refreshed inside when I have a homemade carrot and beet juice and I can literally feel it cleansing my insides. Maybe it’s just my mind willing the juice to help my health but I know that it’s not just wishful thinking. I know for a fact that what I put in my stomach is directly impacting my health.
Carrots are high in antioxidants, potassium, carotene, fiber, and vitamin K1 they help in weight loss and have been linked with lower cholesterol levels and improved eye health. Beets may help prevent certain cancers, they are a good source of potassium and they help slow the progress of dementia. Of course, one juice isn’t going to do the trick, I try to stay consistent with the way I eat but of course, I’m human and fail to stop my hand from reaching the cookie jar every now and then.
We do have superfoods out there and really good natural sources of vitamins and minerals to help our thyroid issues.
Omega 3 Fatty Acids
The fatty acid found in fatty fish like wild salmon, trout, tuna, or sardines decreases inflammation, helps with immunity, and lowers the risk of heart disease. Fish is also a good source of the nutrient selenium which is concentrated in the thyroid and helps decrease inflammation.
Nuts High in Selenium
Selenium is a powerful antioxidant that fights oxidative stress fights against heart disease and cancers and also helps thyroid function. Nuts like macadamia and hazelnuts have Selenium. Watch the portion sizes though because nuts are high in fat.
Whole Grains
Cereals, bread, pasta, and rice help with bowel regularity. However, fiber can interfere with synthetic thyroid hormones so consuming whole grains would be recommended several hours before or after medications or not consuming them at all. I know let's be realistic right?
Beans
Beans help sustain energy and contain protein, antioxidants, complex carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and are high in fiber if you suffer from constipation which is a common side effect of hypothyroidism.
Oysters for Zinc
Oysters aren’t just aphrodisiacs... they are also high in Zinc and help regulate the immune system and the thyroid. Zinc is essential in producing white blood cells which help protect against pathogens.
Avocados for Energy
Avocados are phytonutrients(chemicals produced by plants. Plants use phytonutrients to stay healthy)-rich with twice the amount of potassium as bananas and monounsaturated fats that help regulate blood sugar and provide the thyroid with energy to function.
Greek Yogurt
Before this post, I used to eat so much greek yogurt because I was hooked. I stopped abruptly because I didn’t think something so yummy could be good for me. Well, guess what folks, I’m starting back up again now! Greek Yogurt has Iodine that is essential for thyroid function and is also a probiotic superfood.
Eggs
Eggs have thyroid supporting nutrients like Selenium, Zinc, Vitamin D, and Iron.

Chickweed

Herb Overview
Chickweed, or Stellaria Media, is commonly thought of as just a weed. While it is thought to have originated in Europe, Chickweed is an extremely common plant that can be found in many countries across the planet. Many people consider Chickweed to be a voracious weed. It is hard to get rid of and will dominate areas suitable for it’s growth. What many people don’t know is that Chickweed is an herb with an impressive resume; it is edible and has both medicinal and magickal uses. Chickweed is a representative of the water element and carries a feminine energy. It is ruled by the moon. 
Propagation and Harvest
While it may grow in a wide variety of habitats within varying soil textures, it does prefer cool weather, partial shade and moist, pH-balanced soil. While the plant can be small, because of it’s voracious nature, it can grow to take up alot of space. The stems can grow up to a foot and a half. Throughout it’s growing season it will grow tiny, white flowers not usually larger than a quarter inch in diameter. The leaves tend to grow in pairs, diametrically opposed. They do not typically grow closely together on the stem and can get to an inch and a quarter in length. When harvesting, cut the stems either at the tops or base depending on how much you are going to use. Remember to remove any leaves that are yellow or brown. You may eat the stems, leaves, flowers and even the seed pods. Chickweed does not do well once cut or refrigerated so it is best to use your harvested Chickweed within a day or two of harvest.
Culinary
Chickweed is somewhat of a super plant! It is nutritious, delicious and versatile. It has a pleasantly mild flavor that is often compared to corn silk. You can use it as you would use bean sprouts, it is a great salad base and can also make a good spinach substitute. Chickweed makes a wonderful pesto as well. Additionally, it can be cooked and added to soups, stews, and pastas. When adding to a hot dish, you can use the stems and flowers as well as the leaves. 
Magickal
Folk tales say that Chickweed grows nearby when one needs it. Chickweed was once revered in European folklore for magical energy that is said to maintain and strengthen relationships, encourage fidelity, and attract love. Chickweed requires balanced soil to grow and as a result, promotes balance in life. It is said that the clusters it grows in signifies it’s relationship and community strengthening abilities. They also can carry copious amounts of seeds, ranging  anywhere from ten to two thousand, promoting it’s title as a representative for abundace and fertility. Chickweed is also seen as a protector, it is a strong and willful plant. 
Medicinal
As previously stated, Chickweed really is somewhat of a super plant. People have used Chickweed in many ways to treat many things throughout history. It has been reported that it can be used to relieve constipation, pain, inflammation, stomach and bowel issues, and even skin disorders like eczema and psoriasis. It has a high fiber content, and is loaded with chlorophyll, vitamins and minerals. Chickweed contains saponins which especially help us absorb nutrients, this in addition to it’s high fiber content make it a gut health superstar. These saponins are also great at breaking down bacteria, mucus and even fat cells. Many people will use Chickweed teas or infusions to lose weight and boost the metabolism. It is also cooling and drying, making it a great candidate for skin salves to soothe eczema, psoriasis, acne and insect bites. Chickweed is a traditional inflammation and pain remedy. Tinctures and infusions have been used to treat menstrual cramps and even arthritis. Chickweed tea can also be used as a subtle diuretic, used to flush kidneys. 
Precautions
Chickweed is generally considered safe to eat and use although there are a few concerns. Those precious saponins I talked about earlier are also toxic. Not to be alarmed though, saponins are found in many edible plants like spinach and are poorly absorbed by the body. Therefore they tend to pass without causing harm to the body. Saponins can also be broken down by cooking them. It is important to note that while typically consumption is nothing to worry about,  consuming extremely large amounts of it can still certainly prove toxic. Symptoms of toxicity would be stomach pain, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. It is not really known if Chickweed can interfere with any medication being taken but people with allergies to the Daisy family might like to avoid Chickweed. Those who are pregnant should avoid consumption just to be safe.

As all of you know if you don’t know by now I have a connective tissue disorder called Ehlers Danlos syndrome. I myself have referred to it as the “junk drawer disorder” due to the long list of comorbidities or conditions you can have a long with the primary condition. The definition of Comorbidity noun or plural noun: comorbidities Is the simultaneous presence of two chronic diseases or conditions in a patient.
When I discuss my medical issues many times it’s actually these “comorbidities” I am talking about. Although the majority of my medical issues can be explained by my genetic disease called Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. The majority of the time when I discuss my medical issues I get the looks of disbelief or some have even asked “do you really have all these problems?” The answer to that is simple, it’s yes!
So I decided I’ll list only the comorbidities that I have confirmed diagnoses (dxd) of. During the next couple of months I will discuss these medical problems in more detail.
These are not in any specific order. The list is a Semi-common Comorbidities (Unofficial) list. It's how the article labels it and I think it’s smart to label it this way. Mainly because there currently isn’t any statistics, how common these comorbidities are among EDS patients. The original list can be found at the website at the bottom of this post.

Several reasons why you’re dealing with skin issues during lockdown
I think I can say with some conviction that every single person I know has seen some kind of skin issue occur during lockdown. And don’t get me started on those of us who have to deal with skin complaints on the regular.
As a regular subscriber to the Time Of The Month Hormonal Breakout Club, I’m used to dealing with temperamental skin. But a couple of weeks before lockdown, things got different. Just a month before lockdown I was loving the effect that my Dermatica subscription prescription was having on my skin. That every other night, with a night or two of Paula’s Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant, and my skin was looking good. It felt so smooth. But then it didn’t. I noticed a rash on my neck, jaw line and cheeks. The only time I’d seen something similar in the past was when I had gone overboard with a Glycolic Acid Toner. Tons of tiny little bumps came up. My skin didn’t feel irritated at all, which made things even more weird. In a Carrie Bradshaw tone, I asked myself: “what has changed in my life recently?”
#1 You’re stressed; your skin’s stressed Whew, life is really throwing everything at us right now. Turn on the TV and it’s all about the latest Covid-19 related ‘numbers’; scroll through Twitter and it’s a war zone of everyone telling everyone else what a piece of shit human they are. Scroll through Instagram and you’re likely to come across a still taken from a video of George Floyd being murdered by a Minneapolis police officer that comes with no trigger warning.
It’s a lot.
And it keeps coming, in waves. For me, it comes in the form of tension, all along my jaw, and it lasts for days, ending up in the form of the most intense, painful headaches. When I finally get out of bed, I feel drunk. I haven’t been drinking, but I wish that I had. Instead it’s like my body has been through so much, it needs another 10 hours of sleep to get all the chemicals back in order.
Every time our eyes see something triggering, our body goes into flight or fight mode, readying us to get away. It’s your body trying to protect you, and, due to current events, it’s going through this function several times a day. Each and every time this happens, the chemicals/hormones within you get stirred up, but as there is no actual reason for you to ‘take flight’, so that energy/adrenalin gets reabsorbed, creating tension and confusion in the body. The result? Equally confused skin. What can you do? Protect your energy when you can. No-one’s telling you to go bury yourself under the duvet until 2021, but the odd day under there, spent with your favourite books and no phone, will do you the world of good.Social media is not going ANYWHERE, so please, for your spirit, delete your account for a day, or just turn your phone off. Failing that, try some breathing techniques to bring yourself back into the here and now, because that’s all there is.
#2 You’re dehydrated I know, you probably thought that by being indoors more often you’d easily slam it when it came to staying hydrated, right? Instead, that pint glass you filled up this morning is probably still sitting there, because you’re taking it for granted that you’ll get it done. I mean, what else is there to do during lockdown… While there’s much push and pull on whether drinking more water is good for your skin, the fact is, you need to hydrate your body, period. As your skin is the body’s largest organ, it only makes sense that it’s gonna need hydrating too, but actually, it’s at the bottom of the list when it comes to how your body distributes the water. Your brain and blood get first dibs on the water you ingest, so if you’re sticking with one litre a day, it’s highly likely that your skin could be looking dull and lacklustre. Speaking from personal experience, I can literally feel when I’m dehydrated; it often starts with a headache, and my skin will feel almost papery dry, and I get minimum 2.5 litres per day. Whether you believe in the whole’ 4 litres a day for glowing skin’ thing or not, I’m pretty sure that if you try and drink even 300ml per hour while you’re awake (that’s a Coke can!) you’ll be sufficiently hydrated. I’m not telling you to go drink crazy amounts - just enough to make you go pee more frequently. What can you do? Whatever your water intake is currently, tell yourself you’re going to increase it by 50%. Then measure out that water into how ever many glasses that is, or into a large jug, and keep it on display. Every time you get up to do anything - like go to the fridge - drink a glass. Speaking of pee…
#3 You’re blocked up, down there… Let’s talk shit. No, but really; the amount of articles I’ve read talking about ‘Lockdown Skin’ and ‘How Quarantine Affects Your Skin,’ and no-one is talking about poo. So let me do it for them. If you are now sitting down for prolonged periods of time, more than ever, your digestion is gonna take a hit. But really it should be taking a… Gosh sorry, let me focus. With our commutes to and from work gone, and no more morning drop-offs and evening pickups for the kids, and definitely no extra trips to the shops, the cinema or any activity that you’d usually do, we are definitely moving less. Add to that the fact that the only place we’re visiting on the regular is likely to be the fridge for another snack, and we’re more than likely adding way more sugar or junk food than usual to our diet. On a good, pre-Corona day, you could probably put away a Five Guys meal no problem; but during lockdown, when you’re ordering simply because you don’t have any desire to do ANYMORE WASHING UP, and your poor digestion starts to slow down. On a ‘regular’ day, digestion is no quick thing - especially if you eat meat, it can take hours - but if we’re just sitting there, there’s nothing to get things up and moving. So we slow down, we start to feel sluggish, then we realise, we haven’t had a bowel movement for five days, and it’s easy to understand why your skin’s looking angry. What can you do? Set a timer for yourself; if you’re now working from home, like the vast majority of us, it’s vital to take regular breaks. Set a timer for an hour or 45 minutes, then reward yourself by getting up, stretching, moving around, walking, drinking some water. Spend at least 5-10 minutes away from your work environment, then get back to it. Throw a couple of workouts or long walks in, and you’ll be in a better position to get things moving down there.
#4 Your skin’s not getting the air it’s used to It’s not just movement that we’re missing out on by no more commuting to work - it’s fresh air too. I think one of the biggest ‘little things’ that many of us have realised we take for granted, is pure, unadulterated, no-time-limits fresh air. Feeling the sun on your face, getting that vitamin D, and just being able to breathe in gulps of air, can have a huge effect on our skin, but also our mood. Also, think about what else happens when we’re out and about; all those tiny human interactions, like saying hi to a barista or chatting to someone in the supermarket, can add up to us just feeling better about our day. The air indoors has also changed; at the start of lockdown many of us were having the central heating on all day here in the UK, because it was so cold. That’s a skin dehydrator all by itself. Now that the weather’s warmed up a lot, we’re now struggling with another form of dehydration! What can you do? Now that lockdown measures have eased, take advantage of your time outside. Maximise that fresh air and go for a run, grab a skipping rope or play a ball game with your new-found ‘friend bubble’. All at the correct social distance, obviously - don’t be a dick.

Happy Monday everyone!
I was really hesitant to write this post, but then I gained a new perspective thanks to one of my mentors. The fear of judgment from others that has held me back stems from the fact that I’m focusing on myself. And that is not why I started this blog.
I started this blog to focus on others. To help people who are struggling with chronic health conditions. To lift others up and inspire them to want to be healthier, higher versions of themselves. To share my experience because I know what has helped optimize my health and brought me to this place in my journey.
As you saw in one of my previous posts, I recently visited family members that I haven’t seen in months. They helped me to become more aware of the transformation that I’ve made in just a few, short months.
My family made comments like “You’re tiny,” and asked how much weight I’ve lost. But, the thing is, I haven’t lost any weight. According to my doctor, I’ve actually gained a few pounds. The only difference that I’ve made since the last time I had seen them was taking new supplements to heal my gut. And the feedback that I was getting was speaking volumes of the healing that was happening within ~ it was changing my outward appearance.
These comments prompted me to look back at some progress pictures that I had taken along my fitness journey. The picture below was taken in the winter of 2016 when I was officially diagnosed with Crohn’s, IBD, and IBS.

As you can see, I was struggling with a ton of inflammation. I remember experiencing brain fog that made it difficult not only for me to focus in my therapy sessions, but to be effective with my consumers. I was tired all of the time, my hair was falling out, my joints were achy for how young I was, and I was overwhelmed with stress and anxiety.
This is where I began my gut healing journey. My GI doctor prescribed steroids and immunosuppressants to manage the inflammation in my gut, I started to eat healthier, and began working out regularly.
Even with all of those interventions, I still struggled to “feel normal.” I continued to experience chronic fatigue, joint pain, hair loss, diarrhea, constipation, and anxiety.
Each time I saw my GI, I’d tell her the same things. She continued to monitor my labs and didn’t have a conclusive answer as to why I continued to feel this way. She suggested adding vitamin D, but I still wasn’t feeling more energetic. In the picture below, you can see that I started to lose some weight and the inflammation was more controlled, but I still didn’t feel like myself. I remember feeling frustrated that I wasn’t farther along in my fitness journey since I was being so consistent. I began feeling as though I had to accept my reality that this is how I was going to feel forever.

Once I moved and started seeing a new GI, she referred me to a nutritionist (see previous posts for more info!) and a psychologist who specializes in chronic bowel disease. These interventions definitely helped me feel more in control of my food triggers and anxiety, but we still couldn’t find a way to manage the hair loss, chronic fatigue, brain fog, and joint pain.
Fast forward a year or so and I stumbled upon a podcast about health and wellness called Primal Potential. The host was well-educated and passionate and I began to learn more about the gut-brain connection.
The more I learned about how your gut health can impact your moods, energy levels, and overall health, the more I tried to optimize my gut microbiome.
I began drinking kombucha, taking probiotics, and focusing on nutrition. But, I STILL struggled to feel well. I felt frustrated that I couldn’t find a specific supplement that targets the gut-brain connection.
I know that this research is super new, but feeling like garbage for several years was wearing on me. I continued to listen to the podcast and one day the host began sharing about the additional steps that she was taking to optimize her microbiome.
I decided to reach out to her personally. And that’s how I found the supplement line that has truly changed my life.
Within the first month of taking them consistently, I noticed that I had more mental clarity. I felt sharper and more energetic. Making it through an 8 hour day at work didn’t feel like a chore anymore.
After a few months, my hair began to not only stop falling out, but it grew faster and thicker. Before the supplements, my sweet cosmetologist would gently ask, “Are you going through a shedding phase right now?” At my most recent appointment (6 months into taking them regularly) she asked for a recommendation of what I was taking to make my hair grow back so quickly.
I finally feel like I have optimized my health to a level that I thought was not possible after being diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder. I’m working out at least 5 days a week and waking up earlier than normal to do so. My knees don’t ache, even though I’m doing way more squatting than I was in the past (I used to avoid squatting because it hurt my knees). I have so much more mental clarity that I’m reading and learning more than I have since grad school. My moods are more regulated and even though I still struggle with anxiety, mostly because of my high-stress job, I have more stress resilience than ever. That recent post that I wrote about anxiety was the first time that I’ve struggled with it so much in months.
Below is a picture that I took last week. I know I’m totally putting myself on blast for owning this sports bra for 4 years, but it’s one of my favorites and I can’t bear to part with it! You can see how dramatic the change is from the first picture. This is not to discount the other interventions that have positively impacted my journey, but I can genuinely say that my symptoms have never been as controlled as they are today.

I’m so grateful that we have come so far with gut-brain research and how well I feel today. This has inspired me to share my experience with others, in hopes that they too can find the “missing link” to their chronic health issues.

How to make your own herbal tea
The seasons are changing. Leaves are falling, the temperature is cooling. I love this time of year. There is much to be accomplished as the seasons change, and now is the time to be picking those leaves that flourished during summer, to ensure you have a cosy cup to warm up to in the coming months. I'll bet many of you haven't even considered making your own herbal tea. I know I spent most years of my life believing tea came out of a packet, when at the end of the day it's simply dried leaves. So simple a method and such a lovely process, yet so easily overlooked.
But firstly, I want to introduce you to my very favourite herbal tea, chocolate mint. For those of you are not familiar with choc mint - I'll firstly tell you it's NOT mint tea infused with chocolate, sorry. It's actually simply a variety of mint, with a hint of chocolate that is very well worth your $3 investment (at your local nursery). I actually received my first choc mint sapling in the post from a special friend in Jindabyne about a year ago - how is that for a gorgeously thoughtful gift? Anyway, it is now running rampant through a number of different pots in my backyard - believe me it takes NO ounce of skill to grow this plant.
So what are the benefits of mint tea?
Digestion Mint tea has a positive effect on the symptoms of indigestion. It has a calming effect on stomach muscles, and creates better bile flow which is important for fat digestion. When you consume mint, it moves food more quickly through your stomach. And in this way mint has been found to relieve the painful gas that is associated with digestive issues and Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
Relaxation You have a greater chance of falling asleep if you are actually relaxed when your head hits the pillow, and drinking mint tea before bed is a great way to prepare yourself for a restorative night of good, sound sleep. Ok, so now you know why this herb is good for you, head out into your gardens and pick those tea leaves. We need to have you drying them in preparation for the change of seasons and the cooler months ahead.
How to prepare your tea leaves
Simply cut the stems to the soil (never fear, you cannot destroy this plant, it will continue to grow) and, if you'd like to a have a cuppa there and then, you can steep a handful of fresh leaves in boiling water for 5 minutes and consume. Or, you may choose to dry them so you have leaves at your beck and call.  To do this, I'd suggest throwing them in a pillow slip or mesh bag and hanging them on the line on a sunny day. Mine dried simply sitting on my bench in a bowl over some hot days. Once the leaves are dry and sufficiently crunchy, pick the leaves from the branches (they fall off more easily when dry).  Simply store the leaves in an airtight container and add a heaped teaspoon per cup to your next pot of boiling water for a therapeutic and soothing beverage.

What Is Leaky Gut Syndrome?
A leaky gut is basically what it sounds like: your intestines develop tiny holes that allow for stuff that should stay contained in the gut (like food and toxins) to slowly leak through the gut wall and into the body.
It’s important to realize that up to 80 percent of the immune system is located within the gut wall, and the immune system’s first and foremost job is to produce inflammation in response to anything foreign that passes through the gut wall (like undigested food particles, toxins, bacteria, etc.). It’s not difficult to imagine that if the gut is “leaky” and toxins are continually flooding into the body, the immune system will constantly produce inflammation. Eventually this inflammation becomes chronic (long-term), and it’s chronic inflammation that underlies most “diseases of modern society,” including obesity, autoimmunity, heart disease, diabetes, cancer, depression, anxiety and MANY more diseases and disorders plaguing modern humans. 9 Symptoms of Leaky Gut
Surprisingly, most people suffering from leaky gut syndrome have no digestive symptoms at all. The manifestations of leaky gut can appear virtually anywhere in the body. (5)
Digestive Issues

What Causes Leaky Gut?
Many things can trigger a leaky gut, but the most well studied are:
Diet
In particular, the antinutrients found in grains and legumes and foods that one is allergic or sensitive to. (24)
Several drugs, including alcohol, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), aspirin, antibiotics, methotrexate, estrogen compounds (birth control), and others. (25, 26, 27)
Dysbiosis and Infections
An imbalance in the gut microflora, yeast overgrowth, parasitic or viral infections can also contribute to increased intestinal permeability. (28)
Poor digestion, such as low stomach acid or digestive enzyme production, pancreatic or hepatobiliary deficiencies, and carbohydrate malabsorption. (29, 30)
Poor Oral Hygiene
The mouth represents the beginning of the GI tract, and research suggests that dysbiosis in the mouth can contribute to increased intestinal permeability. (31)
Stress in any form (mental or physical) can trigger leaky gut syndrome. (32)
How to Heal a Leaky Gut in 4 Steps
There’s a concept that we practice in Functional Medicine called the 4R approach to healing the gut. It involves:
Step 1: Remove irritating foods and other toxins from our diets and lives Step 2: Replace toxic foods with digestive support and healing foods Step 3: Repair the intestines by providing the nutrients needed to heal the gut wall and the underlying immune system Step 4: Reinoculate to restore a healthy balance of the gut’s microflora
Eating a Paleo diet is a great place to start. One of the benefits of the Paleo diet is that it follows the 4R protocol by removing the main food triggers that contribute to leaky gut. Here’s a quick breakdown of how you can use the 4Rs and the Paleo diet to reverse leaky gut syndrome:
Remove
The Paleo diet removes the main dietary triggers of leaky gut and chronic disease, including grains, legumes, processed and refined foods, and dairy, in sensitive individuals. As mentioned, any form of stress can trigger leaky gut and chronic disease. In particular, the focus should be on relaxing before, during and after meals to optimize digestion.
Replace
Replacing non-Paleo foods with nourishing gut-healing whole foods will alone work wonders. If you’ve been eating a gut-damaging diet for years, you may find that your digestive system needs some additional temporary support in the form of hydrochloric acid, digestive enzymes or bile salts. Many people unknowingly suffer from low stomach acid production (which has many of the same symptoms as high stomach acid production) and benefit from using apple cider vinegar (or something similar) before meals.
Repair
Certain nutrients and herbs can be helpful by providing the gut lining with the fuel it needs to repair itself. The amino acid glutamine is the main fuel source for gut wall cells and supplementation has been shown to aid in restoring its integrity. (33)
The following nutrients have been shown to help enhance gut wall repair: vitamins A, C, E, D, B1 through B12, all of the amino acids, and the minerals zinc, selenium, chromium, molybdenum, manganese, and magnesium. (34, 35, 36, 37)
Adequate mucus production is essential for gut wall protection, and mucilaginous botanicals have a long history of use for improving overall GI health by reducing inflammation, including aloe vera, slippery elm, deglycyrrhizinated licorice, and marshmallow root. (38) N-acetyl-D-Glucosamine helps to strengthen connective tissues, is a major constituent of the mucosal barrier layer of the gut wall, and has been shown to decrease intestinal permeability. (39) Other dietary components shown to decrease leaky gut include the EPA and DHA found in fish oils, medium chain triglycerides (MCTs), curcumin (turmeric), ginger, quercetin, bone broth, and fermented foods. (40, 41, 42)
Reinoculate
The use of fermented foods and/or probiotics to reinoculate the gut with healthy bacteria and restore a healthy ratio of gut bacteria can be extremely helpful. Four ways to improve the health of your microflora include: 1) Eating a wide variety of foods and fibers, 2) Not using antibacterial cleaners (and do play in the dirt!), 3) Eating live/raw/unpasteurized fermented foods, and 4) probiotics and prebiotics. It’s important to use caution with probiotics because it’s way too easy to overconsume any one type of bacteria if you take the same probiotic pills over and over. I recommend getting probiotics from a rotating variety of fermented whole food sources.
The Bottom Line
If you think you might have a leaky gut, first off, don’t panic (remember, stress is one of the triggers of leaky gut syndrome)! Luckily, there’s a lot that you can do to heal your gut, which repairs itself quite quickly. In fact, the body uses over 20 percent of the energy derived from food to completely replace the gut wall every one to four days! (43) Most people feel like a new person after four to six weeks of living a Paleo lifestyle once the immune system has a chance to reset itself. Of course, depending on how long your gut has been leaky, and taking into consideration the specific conditions you’re dealing with, it may take several months before you’re feeling 100 percent again. Complimentary Practices for Yogasanas
There is much to be said for the practices outside of yogasanas that support & enrich the practice we have on the mat.
During my time at Atmavikasa my teachers have gradually introduced us to ‘complimentary practices’ which can all combined deepen our practice, allow for detox (Physical, Mentally & Emotionally), give reverence to the traditional Hatha yoga system & philosophies, and last but not least further our spiritual work.
They can give you the energy to reflect upon yourself. Build the good intentions from the inside - easier with high energy( Water, Fruits/Veg, Barefoot Walking, Chanting, Pranayama, Meditation, Philosophy & Sungazing).

The most simple yet effective practices are given first:
Drinking Water
4 Litres of water minimum per day is needed for our bodies to function properly.
2 Litres per day (1 litre at a time, 2 separate times)
First one in morning after Asana, Pranayama & Kriya Practice
Second litre drank after mediation/class late afternoon 5:30pm
Temperature preferably room temperature/warm water allows your body to maintain homeostasis, optimally flushing out toxins and replenishing the cells.
We drink at once continuously to:
Rehydrate: After seven or eight hours of sleep, your body becomes dehydrated. Drinking water upon waking helps increase the flow of oxygen, and aids in the production of muscle and blood cells.
Jumpstart your metabolism: Drinking water in the morning can boost your body’s metabolism by about 24%, which can aid in maintaining a healthy weight.
Flush out your toxins: When you drink water in the morning before eating, you help to purify your colon, allowing nutrients to be absorbed more easily. Your kidneys also function better when you’re getting enough fluids.
Energise your brain: When you’re dehydrated, your brain is operating on low fuel. This can cause you to feel tired, drained, may lead to headaches, and you may even experience mood fluctuations.
Prevents & cures diseases: While you sleep your body repairs itself, replenishes energy and balances hormones. The result is toxins and other waste materials being released and waiting to be flushed out.
Be mindful that drinking water is one thing, however absorption & retaining is another.
Depending on nutrition & lifestyle factors, will govern the % of the water you drink that is being absorbed.
Salt intake, sugar, stress, coffee which will excite your nerves will have a connection to absorption. Along with your sleep regularity/patterns and of course the amount of toxins that you have in your body.
When you are constipated, this will not allow you to absorb the water.

To check levels of dehydration, firstly you can watch the dryness of the mouth, if your lips are dry then you need more water. Also your urine if not clear/odourless it means you need more water to not only hydrate your body and cells but also to help your organs detoxify the waste you are holding onto.
Fruits and Vegetables
So here we come to the key aspect of healing, removing the impurities of the mind & deep connection to your true nature, which of course will allow much space for a pure practice.

Our systems are not used to the prana that comes in from Yogasanas (Mediation, Pranayama, and all other complimentary practices). Personal Experiences
I have been drinking 4 litres of water per day now for 8 weeks, physically my skin is really clear, I have less appetite than I had previously ( I was dehydrated before). My body feels much lighter & fresher. It’s hard to describe exactly the feeling other than I feel good, fresh and that I can actually feel my body is being cleaned out from past toxins.
I have experienced a deep detox which initially started in the first 2 weeks as physical digestive detox. Some unexplainable things have been happening for example, never ending diahorrea despite fasting with the old rotten meat coming out of my intestines ( that’s what the smell was like anyway - putrid !) it’s key to note that I haven’t eaten meat for over 12 years now. All sorts of junk that has been stored in my intestines for years.

I know in the long run its worth it, to purify & clear out all the impurities of the body & mind once & for all.
To be able stop & remove any future disease from manifesting surely seems like a small temporary pain/discomfort price to pay. I’ll be completely transparent in saying that it really is not easy. Thank you to my Acharya for all her support, energy & guidance.
